Fat Biking in Breckenridge
What is fat biking.
Biking in Breckenridge doesn’t have to stop in the winter! Fat-tire biking is one of the newest winter pastimes taking over Breckenridge. If you’ve spent any time in Breckenridge over the past few winters, you may have noticed this new breed of snow enthusiasts joining you on the town trails , bike lanes and Nordic center . Bundled up like skiers and riding like mountain bikers, these trail users have found a great new way to play in the snow and get around Breckenridge during the winter. Fat bikes typically have no front or rear suspension and are equipped with 4.8” width tires.

Breckenridge Gold Run Nordic Center
With 30K of impeccably groomed classic and skate cross-country ski trails, 15K of snowshoe trails, fat biking, sleigh rides, ski lessons for all abilities, newly remodeled clubhouse, and well-stocked retail shop, the Gold Run Nordic Center promises a great time for all. The Gold Run Nordic Center recently doubled it’s fat bike rental fleet due to the surge in fat biking popularity.  Guests can conveniently rent fat bikes at the nordic center before heading out on the trails. A Gold Run Nordic Center pass is required to access the trails.
Groomed Trails
Fat Bikers can take advantage of the free, groomed Blue River Recreation path between Breckenridge and Frisco, and additional groomed trails in the iconic Golden Horseshoe. Recently, an additional three miles of groomed trail were added to allow guests to explore wide-open spaces and historic mining sites by snowshoe, ski, fat bike, or simply hiking on their own two feet.
Ungroomed Trails
Breckenridge has a great network of trails to choose from, many of which you can get to straight from downtown. Most fat bikers find that groomed, packed trails are needed for fat biking, so check the current conditions before heading out to be sure the trails are dry and usable. Be sure to brush up on Breckenridge’s winter trail use guidelines before you head out into the backcountry.

Where to get Fat Bike Rentals
If you’re looking to cycle through town or hit the trails on your own , it’s easy to rent a fat bike in Breckenridge. Most bike shops and some ski rental companies will offer fat bike rentals along with gear and helmet rentals.
There are a variety of fat bike options on the market, with models that include front suspension, better components, a range of tire sizes, seat droppers, and more. Be sure to talk with the bike shop staff about your ability level and what style riding you are looking to do (trail rides, winter commuting, not sure?), and they will help you choose the right fat bike! Remember to always wear a helmet and bring gloves, water and sunscreen when fat biking Breckenridge.
What to wear
Breckenridge’s trail system is extensive even throughout the winter months. Dressing for fat biking is very similar to dressing for skiing. Wear layers that you can take off if you heat up during the climbs or add on if it gets cooler. Be sure to bring your reusable water bottle and sun protection including sunscreen and sunglasses or goggles. If you don’t have winter gear or forgot something at home, there are a number of brands that make specific winter cycling apparel , which you can find at local shops around town.
Fat Biking gear checklist:
- Helmet: A mountain bike helmet works
- Hat: Lightweight beanie to wear under your helmet
- Face Buff or Balaclava: To cover your neck, chin, ears, and cheeks on a cold day
- Gloves: Adjust warmth to weather
- Shoes: Heavy duty winter cycling shoes or hiking boots
- Winter Jacket: A soft-shell or breathable coat is best
- Pants: A lightweight, breathable ski pant is best
- Thermal Layers: Be sure to wear layers – or bring them . Polyester and quick-dry materials are best
- Day Pack: To carry layers, water, snacks and sunscreen
Now get out there and start Fat Biking!

Traveler Reviews
We loved the adventure trail. It was really fun to ride along the river. The guides are super nice. Our guide, Annie, rocked! Great way to learn the history of Breck also! We would definitely recommend this tour.
The whole experience was so much fun! Totally recommend this for a group of ladies! I went with a bachelorette party, and we had a blast! Ryan and Annie were the guides for our group (there were 11 of us, so we split up until we got to the brewery), and they were awesome! Chris was very helpful at the shop, and everyone did an excellent job of making sure we were all confident and comfortable with the bikes. The distillery and brewery were both excellent as well. They made our bride-to-be feel special, and our whole group made some great memories!
Chris was a wonderful guide. We learned so much about Breck and enjoyed the ride. It was the perfect combination of challenge, easy riding, beautiful scenery, fresh air and good drinks to reward you at the end.
Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and made sure we knew how to ride safely. The ride itself was beautiful, but we also really enjoyed the local businesses visited. Loved this tour!
We had such a great trip with Annie! She did an awesome job teaching us about the fun history of Breckenridge while getting a beautiful ride down the Blue River. The distillery and the brewery were also fantastic (check out the coconut porter!)
The Fat Bike Tour is a blast. Even though it was cold and snowy it was a great time! Chris did an excellent job of showing us some cool stuff and explaining the history of Breckinridge. The tour ended with some bourbon tasting at Breckinridge distillery and beers at Broken compass. Can’t recommend this tour enough!
Excellent. Staff at the front desk helpful. Chris was interactive and made sure we were comfortable with the bike. Bikes fun to ride. Good history of the town. Scenic . Overall , would recommend. Having the shuttle ride back was very helpful.
There were just two of us the tour which was fabulous because it was like having a private tour. Chris, our tour guide is very knowledgeable on the history of the town and points out places to visit in Breck which is great if you take this tour at the beginning of your visit here. The route you travel on is beautiful and pretty easy. There are plenty of stops on the way at points of interest. You are well taken care of and I highly recommend this tour. The stop at the distillery and brewery were a bonus. I had the double IPA-Snowbound. It was delicious. Enjoy your ride! It’s a great experience!
Great tour in the snow. Historical info on the way. Loved the brewery at the end of the tour. Definitely recommend.
AMAZING! Chris made this so much fun. The guys at Breckinridge Distillery and Broken Compass Brewery were so friendly. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a good time with drinks and a little bit of exercise!

We rode from Breck to Frisco, shopped a bit, then rode back to Breck. It was a beautiful sunny day and there were a lot of places to stop and take photos. We would have appreciated a little more interaction when we picked up our bikes -- suggested routes and things to do as well as more details on how the bike operates. Saddlebags would have also been a great addition. Read more Written 11 October 2023

Our two bikes were brand new fat tire, big battery eBikes. They had some carry bags on them so we could put our backpack on one of the bikes. We had a great time riding to Frisco, and found many restaurant choices there for lunch. You’re on your own the whole time, but they explained the route, and it’s very easy to follow the bike path all the way (paved and with a center line to divide two way bicycle and or walkers and runners). Read more Written October 11, 2023
