Seven Out-of-This-World Experiences at Wondrous Space at The Franklin Institute

Venture into the great unknown with rovers, rockets and glimpses of life in the future ....

Copied to Clipboard

Ground Control to Major Tom: The Franklin Institute takes you to the edges of the universe — and your imagination — in an immersive new space exhibit.

The massive, all-ages permanent exhibit Wondrous Space  invites you to peer into the future and explore outer space through interactive displays, immersive simulations, innovative new technologies and cosmic artifacts.

Wondrous Space spans 7,500 square feet and comprises two distinct experiences across two floors, exploring topics ranging from space careers to the search for habitable worlds.

Here’s what to expect at Wondrous Space , which opens on Saturday, November 4, 2023 .

Exhibition Highlights

Lower Level

The lower level of Wondrous Space immerses you in the vast wonder of space with interactive, multi-person simulations that let you witness celestial phenomena, manipulate natural forces and get closer to understanding how the universe works.

Tap, Roll and Leap Your Way Through the Cosmos

Whirring panels, neon lights, glowing orbs and full-body installations greet you on the immersive lower level.

The exhibit invites you to tap to the rhythm of energy waves, launch asteroids with the flick of the wrist, explore constellations by rolling a massive sphere and see just how high you can jump (on Earth and beyond).

Touch anything and you’ll be in for something special.

The Gravity of the Situation

Get a crash course in the laws of gravity with installations that highlight one of nature’s wildest forces.

As you move through one section, light projections map your movements and demonstrate your gravitational field.

Another section lets you toss real marbles into a (luckily not real) black hole, treating you to brilliant color trails, mesmerizing Béziers and explosive collisions.

A World of Accessibility

It’s not all leaps and explosions — Wondrous Space offers several comfy benches and tranquil spaces to accommodate folks needing a bit less stimulation.

One particularly space-ious section of the lower level is a sensory-friendly haven. (Low volume. Soft lighting. All vibes.) Plus, all in-exhibit print and digital components are offered in both English and Spanish versions, and all media includes closed captioning.

Upper Level

The upper level takes a broader look at the galaxy by focusing on space-related tools and artifacts, letting you design and test your own gadgets and answering some of the universe’s most interesting questions.

It IS Rocket Science

The upper level ramps up the tactile experiences, eschewing sci-fi screens and digital displays for more knobs, dials and switches.

Here, you can build a rocket, from aerodynamics to propulsion to cargo; create a custom lunar rover and launch it into space; and take a rover on a space mission, avoiding dust storms and navigating harsh terrain.

You can also design the perfect space suit (from choosing the ideal visor color to insulating it against the cold) and then test it out in a virtual space simulation. If your suit holds up, that is. (Ours failed catastrophically. Fun!)

Rover Design at Wondrous Space at The Franklin Institute

Reaching for the Stars

Get an up-close look at more than 80 real-life space artifacts, including a 10-foot-long rocket engine, two lunar rovers, lunar lander cores, telescope filters and more.

The floor also highlights the rising stars of the aerospace industry, alongside careers in space exploration and the diversity of professions available.

The Truth Is Out There

Are there other planets that can support life? Yes! Can potatoes and celery grow in space? Maybe! The upper level gives you a glimpse of life in space, with installations that let you scan planets for signs of life and discover who (or what) can survive out there. One simulation even lets you power and maintain a virtual cosmic habitat, complete with a space garden.

Bonus: Peer into the Unknown at the Holt & Miller Observatory

Ever wish you could look at the surface of the sun (safely)? The Holt & Miller Observatory reopens Saturday, November 4, 2023 from noon to 3 p.m. — and it’s looking better than ever.

The rooftop observatory features a massive 10-foot-long telescope perfect for gazing out at solar events, along with a brand-new mural of the Philadelphia skyline. The observatory will be open on Saturdays and Sundays only, as well as during select events.

Tickets and More

Wondrous Space is included with general admission to The Franklin Institute.

The Franklin Institute is also complementing the launch of this (inter)stellar exhibit with a series of space-related public programming, including The Curious Cosmos with Derrick Pitts podcast and the unveiling of the touring art piece Mars by Luke Jerram (November 2-19, 2023).

Wondrous Space is the first of six planned thematic exhibits at The Franklin Institute — and the museum’s first new exhibit in nearly a decade.

Future exhibits will explore topics like the human body, earth systems and robotics, and will replace older exhibits (while preserving museum staples like the Giant Heart and Baldwin locomotive).

Schools across Pa. are wary of offering online instruction during coronavirus closures

Some schools are running into a major legal hurdle in their attempts to offer online instruction during the current closures.

This week, Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre plans to roll out a series of videos of its actors, who are now not allowed to perform “Romeo and Juliet” on stage, reading fairy tales inspired by Shakespeare’s plays for younger audiences at home.

In Norristown, Theatre Horizon normally offers programming for people on the autism spectrum, including playwriting workshops. That is in addition to its main stage production, which of course have been canceled to avoid spreading the virus. This week it used the Zoom video conferencing platform to revive the autism playwriting workshop .

The theater has also hired actors and theater professionals, who are now out of work due to the outbreak, to self-produce a string of videos uploaded daily to its YouTube channel , including age-appropriate dancing videos.

The Franklin Institute is in the process of planning streaming video content for younger scientists. Right now it is streaming a daily, 3 p.m. video about COVID-19 updates, hosted by staff scientist Dr. Jayatri Das . This Friday Das’ nine-year-old daughter will join her to field questions from parents and their kids about the virus.

Free Virtual Field Trips Bring Your Lessons to Life

Brenda Iasevoli

Teaching remotely? You can still take your students on a virtual field trip! There's an array of free, fun, and educational opportunities to choose from. Even if you're teaching in person, a digital excursion might be your only option, with so many museums, aquariums, and other traditional field trip destinations across the country off limits during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thankfully, digital does not mean disappointing. In fact, the virtual field trips we highlight here will transport you and your students to exciting and far-flung places. Students can get up close with leopard sharks, moon jellies, and other sea creatures in their natural habitats. They can take a virtual trip to Mars, hike a Finnish forest, or discover what it looks like inside their very own brains. The ideas are endless, and we think you'll agree, pretty awesome, too. Ready to take learning outside the classroom? These field trips are just a click away.

Free Virtual Field Trip Ideas for Elementary, Middle, and High School Students

Dive under the sea.

The webcams at Monterey Bay Aquarium in California are sure to delight. Students can watch the hustle and bustle of colorful tropical fish flitting back and forth in their coral reef community. They can follow leopard sharks as they swim through gently swaying kelp canopies, or become mesmerized by the hypnotic drifting of glowing moon jellies. With 10 live cams to choose from, there's always some fun (and learning, of course!) to be had as students spy on animals in their natural habitat.

Visit a Finnish Forest

The sounds of the forest will captivate students as they wander its pathways and learn about species that call this habitat home. Along the way, students will meet forestry professionals who will tell them about the role of forests in climate change mitigation and the different stages of forest management, from planting to harvesting. Students will also get to know the ins and outs of sustainable forestry. This virtual field trip is brought to classrooms by UPM, a Finnish forest industry company.

Take a Tour of Aviation History

The National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., contains the largest collection of aircraft and spacecraft in the world. And now students can experience this collection of American aviation history up close without ever leaving the living room. They can check out the bright red airplane that Amelia Earhart flew , setting two aviation records, and the Apollo 11 Command Module , which served as the living quarters for the three-person crew during the first manned moon landing mission, in July 1969. Other interactive exhibits include Geography from Space quizzes for older kids and the Pilot Pals game for younger ones.

Wander the Red Planet

Your students can hop on a virtual ride-along with the Curiosity Mars rover, thanks to a partnership with Google, Access Mars, and NASA. Students get a 360-degree view of the Martian terrain as recorded by the rover's cameras, revealing the planet's dunes, valleys, and unique rock formations. Users can click various access points for descriptions of each geographical feature. NASA scientists created the 3D model using the more than 200,000 photos that Curiosity sent back to Earth since landing on the Red Planet in 2012. NASA scientist Katie Stack narrates the experience. You and your students can wander the planet with a computer, phone, or VR device.

Explore Your Amazing Brain

The Franklin Institute provides interactive activities from its award-winning exhibit Your Brain, which take students on an exploration of what's happening as their brains make sense of the world around them. They will discover why we see "faces" in clouds, rock formations, and other objects; how music can make us feel fear; what their brains will look like in the future; and much more!

Doodle With Mo!

Your students are invited into the studio of children's book illustrator Mo Willems. All they have to do is grab paper and a pencil (or markers, crayons, chalk, or any art tool of choice) to try their hand at doodling . In the first episode of Lunch Doodles, Willems shows students how to draw his most famous character, the pigeon. Each video lesson comes with a student activity sheet. Here's the first episode's activity sheet , with step-by-step directions for drawing the pigeon. Check out all 15 archived video episodes.

See the View at the Zoo

Penguins, polar bears, and platypuses, oh my! San Diego Zoo’s 12 live cams allow students to get a peek into the day-to-day routines of the zoo’s inhabitants as they eat, swim, and play. The animals aren't active all day, so check back often to find the times when they're out and about. After observing the animals, students can click around to learn more about their distinctive features, habitat, diet, family life, and more.

Planner Tools: Virtual Tour of the Franklin Institute

Planner Tools: Virtual Tour of the Franklin Institute

When doing a site visit, it can be difficult to envision how the space will look once it is set up for a specific event. This is especially true for unique venues where the event space may be one of a kind.

IMS recently provided an iPad loaded with a virtual tour of the facility to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to improve the experience of both planners and the venue. The tour includes 360 degree views of different event spaces, similar to what you would see on Google street view, and include the option to open photo galleries or videos of the space. There are also several sets of pictures loaded onto the iPad from events IMS has executed at the Franklin Institute. These illustrate different options for setting the Institute’s unique space, and have assisted planners in creative approaches to laying out events in this distinctive venue. IMS’s stellar creative and design team has worked closely with several clients of the Franklin Institute in bringing their visions to life and providing a memorable experience for their attendees.

Take Ben Franklin Memorial Hall as an example - the room centers around a statue of Ben Franklin, and when planners visit it may be during the day amongst a crowd of families enjoying the Institute’s exhibits. With the virtual tour, planners can refer to photos of the room set for an evening event with furniture, staging and audio visual while simultaneously walking the space. Planners can even see a video from an event where IMS projection mapped onto the Ben Franklin statue and interacted with event attendees.

As meetings and event professionals, we know there’s no substitute for being there in-person. That said, if planners aren’t able to visit the Franklin Institute they can also view the virtual tour online . IMS is always experimenting with new applications of technology. If you have a need for virtual tours, video production or projection mapping, or if you’re looking for a creative solution to any challenge, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Testimonials

[GSK Science in the Summer™] does lend itself to piquing [kids’] interest in a way that we wouldn't be able to do during the school year or in other projects we've done. And I think a lot of that has to do with…exposure to materials, exposure to discussion about the sciences, and the activities that they're doing, where they come from and all of that… They're engaging at a level that they otherwise wouldn't have had.  – 2023 Educator

The GSK Science in the Summer™ program allowed us to increase our summer engagement, I mean, a million times over. The curriculum that was provided was very accessible both for the students, but also for the educators that were facilitating the activities with the kids. And so, it really helped empower our counselors, our instructors, and our partners who were facilitating the program at their sites.  – 2023 Partner

I will be incorporating more STEM-based programs after being part of [GSK Science in the Summer™]. It has not only piqued my interest in science, but [it has] given me a new awareness of how much STEM is used in our daily lives. I feel much more confident and comfortable relating and using STEM in our other programming that is mostly arts-based because I see more clearly now how they interact.  – 2023 Educator

I wish all of the organizations that I worked with operate the way that [GSK] Science in the Summer™ does. The amount of communication and the accessibility to support from The Franklin [Institute] was and is just immense and immensely helpful. The outline, the structure of the program, the high level of communication. I never felt alone or abandoned or left to the wind. I never had to figure anything out on my own. There was always a resource or a person that was available when I had questions.  – 2023 Partner
