A Travel Guide for How to Visit Toronto on a Budget

TripSavvy / Brakethrough Media

Visiting Toronto is like visiting several dozen nations without unpacking your bags. This thoroughly cosmopolitan city offers the sights and flavors of countries on every continent. This travel guide will show you how to visit Canada's largest urban area without spending too much money.

When to Visit

Winters are harsh, but Torontonians are too busy to shiver. Most tourists visit in the summer months when prices peak. Consider a trip in the fall, when foliage is spectacular. Prices have fallen by that time, and crowds thin out at the major attractions. If you plan a Spring trip, keep in mind that mild weather sometimes does not arrive until late May. You'll be searching for airfares to and from Canada's busiest airport.

Where to Eat

Toronto is one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities. Here you can find restaurants featuring food from almost any point on the compass. Many travelers rave about the authenticity of the offerings from eastern Europe and Asia. It's one of the few cities where, with very little effort, you can dine on a new and striking ethnic specialty every night of your stay.

Where to Stay

As you search for a room , consider that most of the world's major hotel chains have multiple locations here, with most concentrated near the airport in Malton or in the downtown area. Some budget travelers prefer to snag Priceline deals on the larger hotels along Younge Street, because they can then walk to a lot of major attractions, the subway, and dining.

Getting Around

The Toronto Transit Commission operates a network of buses, streetcars and subway trains. It's a clean, efficient network that would be the envy of most major cities. Check out the passes they offer if you'll be in the city more than a few days. Be aware that routes are extended during the summer months to popular destinations such as Exhibition Place, Ontario Place, and Toronto Zoo. If you decide to explore the vast Toronto suburbs, you'll need to rent a car.

Toronto Attractions and Nightlife

Toronto's club scene is active and changes quickly. It's best to check local listings after arrival. The theatre district frequently hosts Broadway-quality productions, but you'll also find "off-Broadway" class shows of high quality. Sports fans can take a guided tour of Rogers Centre. The tour is reasonably priced, but don't expect the same at Rogers Centre hotels and restaurants, especially if an event is scheduled. Also expensive: a trip to the top of CN Tower, once the world's tallest free-standing structure.

Culture Sampling

Chinatown has become the generic place name of a wide area along Spadina Ave and along Dundas St. West. Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese immigrants sell native specialties in restaurants and markets. Toronto has two "Little Italy" sections: One along College Street and one to the northwest in Woodbridge. If you choose College, you can stroll into "Little Portugal," too. See how easy it is to sample the world's finest cuisine during a Toronto visit?

More Toronto Tips

  • For a major splurge, consider taking High Tea. The Fairmont Royal York Hotel will serve you the traditional British mid-afternoon treat, complete with pastries and shortbreads. It will cost you about as much as a moderately-priced dinner somewhere, but the upscale experience is something you'll remember longer than an average meal. The Royal York has been serving high tea for generations, so trust them to give you an authentic experience.
  • Look at ToTix for half-priced theater tickets. Much like their counterparts in New York and London, ToTix offers deeply discounted tickets for day-of-show performances. Toronto's version is at the southeast corner of Young-Dundas Square. Sales are done in-person only. Tip: Be careful about waiting hours in line to save money on anything. The time you spend is valuable, too.
  • Check out Saint Lawrence Market. Here is an Old Toronto locale (east of downtown near Wellington and Front Streets, subway to Union Station or King Street) that will inspire those interested in European architecture and charm. The St. Lawrence Market website says Food and Wine Magazine named St. Lawrence one of the world's Top 25 Markets. Taking in the sights is free; enjoying the trendy bistros nearby is not!
  • One more market: Kensington. This place will take you back in time. Sample old-world pastry at one storefront, buy vintage tailored clothing a few doors away. Narrow streets and friendly faces abound. Even if you don't buy a thing, visiting Kensington market is an authentic Toronto experience you won't soon forget.
  • Rail options for Canada begin here. Few places in the country offer rail travel opportunities that rival what you'll find in Toronto. Union Station is located adjacent to the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. It was once the crossroads of Canada, and it still offers some intriguing trips. How about a jaunt to Moose Jaw? You'll probably be more interested in inter-city options: Via Rail Canada can whisk you to downtown Montreal  in less than five hours for about $100 CDN one-way. Expect to pay more during prime travel times.

5 favorite places

Eugene Levy’s Toronto

The Canadian comedian, known for “American Pie,” “Schitt’s Creek” and now, “The Reluctant Traveler,” isn’t at all reluctant to share what he loves about his hometown.

As you might guess from the title of Eugene Levy’s latest series — “The Reluctant Traveler” — he’s a guy who’s happy to stay put.

The show, now in its second season on Apple TV+ , follows Mr. Levy, a 77-year-old comedy legend known for his roles in “Waiting for Guffman,” “American Pie,” “Schitt’s Creek” and more, as he defies his anxieties about airports, heights, temperatures, textures and vast swaths of the animal kingdom. With great consternation, he leaves his comfort zone — Canada, as he often reminds viewers — to shadow an expert moose caller in Sweden, herd 600 sheep through a German resort town and politely avoid an octopus aboard a Greek trawler.

Eugene Levy leans against a wall with his right hand holding the knot of a navy blue tie. He is wearing a dark blue shirt and a rust-colored blazer. He has dark-framed round glasses and dark hair combed back with some gray mixed in. He has one of his distinctive thick eyebrows raised and is smiling with closed lips.

Raised in Hamilton, Ontario, about 40 miles southwest of Toronto, Mr. Levy got his big break in 1972 alongside Martin Short, Gilda Radner, Victor Garber, Andrea Martin and Paul Shaffer in a celebrated production of “Godspell” at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theater . He has since called the city — and one historic, leafy neighborhood — home.

“Rosedale is a residential area that is right in the heart of Toronto,” he told me over coffee at Tavern on the Green, in New York, where he’d joined the cast of the fourth season of “ Only Murders in the Building .” With new skyscrapers going up “a mile a minute” in Toronto, he said, the scene from our table in Central Park looked a little like his view from Rosedale. He and his wife, Deborah Divine, are neighborhood loyalists — Avant Goût , a local bistro, has been their go-to for decades — but spots in other areas rank high, too.

Here are five of Mr. Levy’s favorite places in Toronto.

1. Terroni Bar Centrale

“Deb and I would usually do our daily constitutional in the morning and end up at Bar Centrale for a latte and some of their fine pastries,” he said, adding that the croissants are especially good at this spot in Summerhill, a neighborhood that borders Rosedale. Occupying the ground floor of the multistory Terroni Price restaurant in a 19th-century brick building, Bar Centrale forgoes the Wi-Fi you might expect with your coffee in favor of a wall’s worth of international magazines and — according to Mr. Levy — a staff full of good conversationalists.

2. Harry Rosen

The flagship of this family-run men’s wear emporium on Bloor Street is one-stop shopping for Mr. Levy. “I hate traveling around to different places to get different things,” he said, very much on brand. This place “has every designer, if that’s what you’re into, and everything from socks to tuxedos.” There’s also a sumptuous grooming department, a tailoring service and an array of coffee table books on topics like racecars, rockers and tattoo art.

3. CN Tower

Touristy? Sure, Mr. Levy acknowledged. Still, this approximately 1,815-foot communications and observation tower offers unrivaled views of the city and Lake Ontario, even if — like him — you avoid the acrophobia-inducing glass-floored sections. “We used to take the kids there when they were young,” he said. “I couldn’t even put my toe on the edge of the glass, but my kids would just destroy me — they would lie down on it.” A less stressful view: Rogers Centre , the stadium next door, where you can see the Toronto Blue Jays play baseball. “I’ve been a Jays fan for, I guess since they started in ’77,” Mr. Levy told me. He clarified his brand of fandom during a Season 2 episode of “The Reluctant Traveler”: “I don’t go and paint my face,” he told the Spanish footballer Héctor Bellerín , but “in a championship game, I’ll stand up and give them, you know, a thumbs-up.”

4. The Royal Conservatory of Music

“The musicianship coming out of the Royal Conservatory is just awesome,” said Mr. Levy, quick to note that his wife “would go there when she was a kid taking piano lessons.” (Students at the 138-year-old institution have included the pianist Glenn Gould and the singer Sarah McLachlan .) Mr. Levy loves concerts at the attached Koerner Hall — “the acoustics are impeccable” — where you can see top students or international stars .

5. Windsor Arms Hotel

The 1972 “Godspell” role became Mr. Levy’s first steady acting paycheck: “That was huge,” he said. And with his windfall (“140 bucks every single week”) he started enjoying meals and late-night cocktails, or cake and coffee, at the Windsor Arms , a 10-minute drive from the theater. The hotel was popular, he said, because it was “quiet and more residential” than others. (The suites feel like genteel prewar apartments, with musical instruments and plenty of plush seating.) One of Mr. Levy’s favorite old haunts there — the Courtyard Cafe — is now the Courtyard, an event space worth a quick wander to see where, among other things, Elton John and David Furnish held an engagement party. Mr. Levy, now a connoisseur of 5:30 p.m. dinners, is no longer the late-night cake-and-coffee guy he once was — but he still gives the place, you know, a thumbs-up.

10 Toronto Restaurants That Are Worth The Hype

10 Toronto Restaurants That Are Worth The Hype

In Toronto word travels quick, especially when it’s about the up and coming restaurants in the city. The city is full of foodies that are quick to rave about their newest discoveries, but are all of these places really worth the hype? This is a list of 13 restaurants that live up to all the hype. These awesome spots deserve all the Instagrams, line ups, and tweets because they are just that delicious.  Be sure to try out some of the amazing dishes these restaurants have to offer!

1. The Grand Electric // 1330 Queen St W.

Many people are quick to say that these are some of the best tacos in the city, which they definitely are! These tacos are jam packed with super fresh ingredients that put them above many other tacos joints in the city.

2. Hanmoto // 2 Lakeview Ave.

This restaurant has a small but mouthwatering menu.  Hanmoto is known for their delicious Dyno Wings, so be sure to try them when you get the chance!

Photo cred -@ ivy_t521

3. Khao San Road // 785 Queen St W.

Luckily this place does not take reservations, because if they did they would be booked up for years. This is easily some of the best Thai in the city, and as an added bonus the portions are very generous.

4. Seven Lives // 69 Kensington Ave.

Cheap tacos, and great quality.   As simple as that, and 100% worth every bit of hype!

5. Bar Raval // 505 College St

Bar Raval lives up to the hype with atmosphere and architecture alone.  Not only is this restaurant beautiful, but it is also incredibly delicious with very attentive staff.

6. Miku // 10 Bay St #105

The presentation is incredible at Miku which definitely makes it some of the most Instagram-worthy food in the city! The food is just as delicious as it looks, and staff are always quick to make great recommendations.

7. North of Brooklyn // 650.5 Queen St W. & others

This pizza is super tasty and reasonably priced! It's an added bonus that you can either buy by the slice or buy an entire pizza, it's not often that you can get this fresh of ingredients for so cheap!

Photo cred -@ eatpics

8. Rock Lobster // 538 Queen St W.

Rock Lobster is home to some of the best seafood in the city.  Their caesars put them on the map in Toronto, but how could they not when they are garnished with a giant lobster tail?

9. Old School // 800 Dundas St W.

Although the typical 30 minute wait may seem excessive for a breakfast place, Old School is completely worth it.  Their pancakes stacks are very popular, along with the chicken and waffles!

10. Buca // 604 King St W.

Buca is nothing short of incredible.   If you like Italian food and are looking for a new favourite restaurant, this is the place for you.  All the dishes are full of flavour and creativity, making this spot completely worth the hype!

Federal officials say they’ve made what they describe as a major seizure of baby eels after finding 109 kilograms of elvers at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport earlier this week.

The seizure was carried out on Wednesday by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canada Border Services Agency, who say the fish were slated to be shipped overseas.

Officials estimate the elvers seized are valued between $400,000 and $500,000.

The federal government closed the lucrative elver fishery on March 11 after violence and intimidation plagued last year’s fishing season in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Elvers are typically flown to Asia where they’re raised to maturity and sold for food, as mature eels are used in unagi dishes at sushi restaurants.

The baby eels are worth about $5,000 per kilogram — more than lobsters, scallops or salmon — making them the most valuable fish by weight in Canada.

Federal data shows 149 people have been arrested for elver-related crimes, and nearly 208 kilograms of elvers have been seized so far this year.

Arc’teryx Is Opening Its First Repair-Focused ‘Alpha’ Store in Toronto

A massive expansion of its sustainability-minded rebird service center..

arcteryx brand alpha store space opening toronto canda details rebird service center repair resale upcycling fixes technician

Arc’teryx wants your gear to last you a long time – a concept driving the opening of its first Alpha store in Toronto. Named after its flagship Alpha jacket , the new outpost will mark what the brand refers to as its “vertical-led strategy,” essentially its aim for customers to get maximum usage out of their buys.

At the store, Arc’teryx will house its largest repair and resale ReBIRD Service Center, where two full-time technicians can repair items on-site, replacing zippers, cords, sliders, locks and buckles, along with both internal and external patches. They’ll also conduct product assessments, such as testing its GORE-TEX for potential leakage.

Breaking down the standout musical moments on Law & Order Toronto

Music supervisor john rowley explains how he selected music by canadian artists for the hit crime series.

Social Sharing

In the opening moments of Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent 's series premiere, after the franchise's iconic "dun-dun" intro, the show's first victim falls off his yacht into Lake Ontario. While scenes like this are a staple of Law & Order shows, the song playing — "Twennies" by Toronto synth-pop act Dragonette — helps drive home this offshoot's brand new setting.

  • Q with Tom Power The story behind the 'dun-dun' sound on Law & Order
  • The art of the needle drop: how TV shows and films find the perfect song

Law & Order , a series that first started airing in 1990, has occasionally extended beyond its New York City headquarters, landing in the U.K. in 2009 and San Diego in the 2002 reality spin-off, Crime & Punishment . But Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent , which premiered on Feb. 22 on Citytv and aired its finale on Thursday night, marks the franchise's first Canadian entry.

In order to give the show a distinctly Canadian identity, the series prominently features Toronto landmarks including Union Station, City Hall and, of course, copious shots of the CN Tower. Crimes draw inspiration from the Rob Ford crack scandal and the recent criticisms against Loblaw chairman Galen Weston Jr. over food price inflation.

But an equally important local component is the show's soundtrack.

  • Group Chat Law & Order Toronto is here. Does it live up to the hype?
  • With Law & Order spinoff, Toronto finally gets its big break — as itself

Moments like party scenes, car rides and hockey games provided opportunities for the show's music supervisor, John Rowley, to incorporate songs to build out its sonic world.

"I think it should be music that Canadians, first and foremost, will recognize," Rowley explained, of his approach to the series. "We want to hopefully have this show travel outside of Canada, and what a great opportunity to have music from Canadian artists be heard.... It's an opportunity to introduce their music to perhaps a wider audience, which is always what music supervisors live for."

While not every song featured on the show's first season was Canadian — "You try to respond to the moment that you're presented with," Rowley says — Canadian music fans will likely be entertained by snippets of tracks by Charlotte Cardin, Georgia Harmer and the Tragically Hip playing in the background of certain scenes. Below, Rowley breaks down some of the season's musical moments.

'Confetti,' Charlotte Cardin (Episode 3, 'The Real Eve')

"I've loved Charlotte's music from the first time I heard [2016's 'Like it Doesn't Hurt']. Her voice is incredible, the production, the writing — everything. Since the first time I heard her, and placed 'Like it Doesn't Hurt' on Season 1 of Mary Kills People , she's gone from being relatively unknown outside of Quebec to now being somebody who fills Massey Hall, and it's wonderful to see that. She's a star. I was delighted that she let us use her amazing music. I love 'Confetti.'"

'Superstitious,' Friyie (Episode 5, 'Bleeding Hearts')

"In that episode, the characters are Ghanaian immigrants to Canada so I was interested in featuring Toronto artists with Ghanaian roots. I was searching a little bit and interestingly the Toronto Star had just done an article featuring some Afro-Canadian artists and Friyie's name was there. I started listening and loved what I was hearing, so that's how that came to be."

'Homes,' Georgia Harmer (Episode 6, 'Minnow and the Shark')

"That seemed like a great opportunity to find a placement for an emerging Canadian artist. I pitched three songs for that, and Georgia's song won, and I'm glad it did because she's a great artist and she's going to go on to big things."

'Athena's Song,' Sydney Ozerov-Meyer (Episode 7, 'The Sound of Silence')

In this episode, guest star Sydney Ozerov-Meyer plays a musician who gets a big break on a popular radio program. During a scene in-studio, she performs an original song, a track that the real-life actor wrote several years ago "on the anniversary of my friend's passing as a sort of catharsis," as she explained in an Instagram post. "I never really thought anyone would hear it.... The show gave me the chance to revisit the piece and finally complete it."

"[The show's producers] asked me if I could clear some songs that [Ozerov-Meyer] could cover, but they also asked me to have a listen to the song that Sydney had written and recorded as a potential thing that she could perform for that scene. So I listened to it and gave my thoughts, which were that the song was great and that this would really work.

"So we looked into some other songs, but as we were going through that process, it became clear when it came time to shoot that that was going to be the song because it was just perfect."

'Fifty-Mission Cap,' the Tragically Hip (Episode 8, 'Boys Will Be Boys')

"I spent a year [at music publishing company Peermusic Canada] as their sync manager representing [the Tragically Hip's] catalogue for film and television licensing. So I had an opportunity to pitch Tragically Hip songs and got to know their then-management a little bit. So when the opportunity came along for this — a hockey episode; right off the bat, there's guys hitting others into the boards — I thought, 'What classic hockey songs do we have in Canada?' I pitched a few, but I was secretly hoping that people would love 'Fifty-Mission Cap' as much as I did, and luckily they did, and the band was, wonderfully, interested and up for it.... That was a real treat to see that one."

Famous Cheltenham Badlands near Toronto about to reopen with one big change this year

Latest Videos

The surreal and very photo-worthy Cheltenham Badlands is about to open up for the season, giving locals and visitors a chance to feel like they're on Mars while still in Ontario.

The awe-inspiring site, located just an hour from Toronto in Caledon, is now managed by the Ontario Heritage Trust, which recently reclaimed operations from Credit Valley Conservation.

The organization  has informed the public that they will be able to go see the geographic phenomenon up close and in person again starting in mid-May, though a specific opening date has yet to be announced.

The trust is also this year introducing a new and improved booking system to better serve sighseers, who can take in the 36-hectare attraction from designated accessible boardwalks.

Unfortunately, no one has been permitted to explore the property freely on foot since 2015 due to ongoing efforts to protect the feature. But, trails were recently upgraded , and now offer a link between the Bruce Trail and Badlands Trail around the area, as well as a large viewing platform.

Daytrippers should be aware that they will need to book slots to stop by and park near the sandy red mounds in advance online, and will need to pay a $10 to $35 entrance fee per vehicle, depending on the day and length of stay (options are 90 minutes or three hours).

The Badlands will remain open from dawn until dusk through November 20, 2024.

Is the Toronto Blue Jays' window to contend officially closing?

Sitting last in the al east with regression throughout the lineup, the blue jays will soon have to face the reality of being sellers at this year's trade deadline.

Not long ago, the Toronto Blue Jays appeared to be in line to become baseball’s next great team. They had talent, a good mix of veterans and young players, strong starting pitching and a bullpen capable of closing the door. And with a young duo ready to take the world by storm in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette , everyone believed it was their turn.

But as baseball often shows in its own cruel way, no one is entitled to anything. And what might be here today is never guaranteed tomorrow.

After reaching the postseason the past two seasons and being promptly swept by the Mariners and Twins, respectively, the Blue Jays have regressed so far in 2024. Toronto is 19-23, last in the AL East and seemingly unable to find any level of consistency.

In trying to figure out what has gone wrong in Toronto, there has been obvious regression throughout the roster. In the rotation, Alek Manoah ’s 180 from Cy Young finalist to afterthought is a bizarre situation that hasn’t been resolved. Despite stellar starts from José Berríos and Yusei Kikuchi this year, the continued struggles of Manoah and a slow start from Kevin Gausman (4.95 ERA) have been difficult to overcome. What’s more, Toronto’s bullpen has not been reliable, as evidenced by a 5.03 ERA that is third worst in MLB.

But the major head-scratcher comes from Toronto’s offense, which was once the team’s biggest strength. This season, the Blue Jays’ lineup has been anemic, ranking 29th in MLB in runs scored. The biggest part of the offensive backslide has come from the struggles of Guerrero and Bichette, a duo that was once the envy of many teams in baseball.

Since his first full season in 2021, Bichette has consistently been one of the best hitters in baseball. From '21-23, he slashed .298/.339/.476, and his 555 hits were third most in MLB. But this season has been another story. Bichette has looked lost at the plate, posting a .227/.287/.320 slashline with just two homers and a 77 WRC+. His struggles have led manager John Schneider to put his former leadoff hitter as low as sixth in the lineup in response to his lack of production.

An even bigger issue from a production standpoint might be Guerrero’s dip over the past two seasons. Vlad Jr. arrived in the big leagues in 2019 with as much hype and expectation as any prospect in the past decade. And his third season in 2021 delivered what looked like the next young superstar starting to blossom. That year, Guerrero slashed .311/.401/.601, crushing an AL-leading 48 homers. If not for the existence of Shohei Ohtani , Guerrero would’ve run away with the AL MVP Award.

Since that monster season, Vladdy hasn’t been able to deliver an encore or continue his development into one of MLB’s best players. His numbers have been fine, with a combined .804 OPS the past two seasons and a similar start to '24. But after that glimpse of what his ceiling could be in '21 — not to mention a Blue Jays roster built with him as the expected centerpiece — fine isn’t going to get it done. Toronto’s success relies on Vlad Jr. being great, not just OK. Without him, the whole offensive equation starts to fall apart.

If the Blue Jays played in the AL Central, NL Central or even this year’s AL West, maybe sleep-walking through the first seven weeks of the season wouldn’t be as concerning. But they play in an AL East that features two World Series contenders in the Orioles and Yankees , a Rays squad that is always in the mix for the postseason, and a Red Sox team that is much better than expected. That leaves Toronto as the team with the worst record in the division and the only one playing less-than-inspired baseball.

In the middle of the 2022 season, Blue Jays president of baseball operations Mark Shapiro and the team decided to fire former manager Charlie Montoyo and turn to Schneider, a move that helped spark a run to the postseason. It’s not too early to wonder what Toronto will do if it can’t play better baseball going into June and whether another change at the helm will be made. It’s also not too early to ask where the Blue Jays stand regarding the trade deadline and how far into seller mode they might go.

Going from being the runners-up in the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes to facing a teardown at the trade deadline before the end of May probably isn’t the way the Blue Jays thought this season would go. But something is off north of the border, with far bigger problems than a hot streak or two could solve.

Sooner rather than later, Toronto’s front office is going to have to decide if its window is officially closed. The baseball gods might’ve already decided for them.
