Reigning AIG Women’s Open champion Ashleigh Buhai will headline the 30th Investec South African Women’s Open when the Sunshine Ladies Tour celebrates its 10th anniversary with an action-packed season in 2023.

Buhai, who became the country’s second women’s major champion with her Muirfield triumph in August, finished her international season in style with a gritty one-stroke victory in the Women’s Australian Open at Victoria Golf Club.

It is entirely fitting that the pride of South African women’s golf will return to the fairways she forged her career upon as the Sunshine Ladies Tour celebrates a decade as Africa’s principal platform for professional women golfers and development conduit for amateurs coming through the ranks.

Buhai, the only amateur winner of the Sunshine Ladies Tour’s flagship event, will be targeting a fourth victory in March.

The new season will tee off from 1-3 February at Sun City, South Africa’s unrivalled number one holiday resort. The homegrown talent will go head-to-head with the first international campaigners to hit South African shores in the SuperSport Ladies Challenge presented by Sun International, and the R1.3-million season-opener will be contested at the world-renowned Gary Player Country Club.

Next, the circuit heads to South Africa’s premier lifestyle resort, Fancourt, nestled in the heart of South Africa’s Garden Route for the Dimension Data Ladies Pro-Am.

The 10 th edition from February 10 will be another milestone worthy of celebration, and to mark the occasion, the purse has been bumped from R600 000 in 2021 to a staggering R2.5-million. In addition, the leading 10 teams on the final day will fight it out for the lion’s share of the R100,000 prize pot in the Betterball Pro-Am Competition.

In previous editions of the popular Sunshine Ladies Tour stop, which is played concurrent with the Sunshine and Challenge Tour’s co-sanctioned Dimension Data Pro-Am, the first two rounds were played at the nearby George Golf Club and the final round at Fancourt. This year all three rounds will be contested at the Outeniqua and Montagu courses.

Atlantic Beach Links in the Cape will host its first Sunshine Ladies Tour event with the R400 000 Cape Town Ladies Open from 15-17 February. The City of Cape Town, who has hosted the Investec South African Women’s Open since 2018, has supported the event since 2015.

The former home of the Investec South African Open, Glendower Golf Club in Edenvale, will welcome back the fifth edition of the Jabra Ladies Classic from 22-24 March. The winner of the Jabra Ladies Classic receives an invitation to compete in the Jabra Ladies Open on the Ladies European Tour.

The Joburg Ladies Open, returns to Modderfontein Golf Club from 1-4 March.

The first Ladies European Tour stop in South Africa boasts a significant bump in prize money – from €250,000 to €300,000 – making this event a hugely attractive drawcard for local golfers with aspirations to play in the Europe and the international contenders targeting an early advantage on the season-long Race to Costa del Sol.

The Investec South African Women’s Open will draw the curtain on the 2023 season from 8-11 March.

This 72-hole showdown will be played at the picturesque Steenberg Golf Club for a second successive year, and the field will be competing for an increased purse of €320,000 (over R5.9-million), thanks to the investment by Investec and the City of Cape Town.

Introducing the 2022 Sunshine Ladies Tour with new sponsors, increased prize funds and co-sanctioned events

There’s a bumper season ahead for the leading lights of South African women’s golf , and international participants from around the globe as the 2022 Sunshine Ladies Tour tees off. The tour boasts a massive prize money hike, two Ladies European Tour (LET) co-sanctioned events and new sponsors.

The ninth season will feature seven Investec Order of Merit counting events, starting with the SunBet Cape Town Ladies Open from February 2-4 and culminating with the Investec South African Women’s Open from March 30 – April 2.

Sunshine Ladies Tour General Manager Pauli van Meersbergen, said:

“We are proud to unveil a schedule packed with great incentives and nearly R13-million to play for. We are incredibly grateful to our loyal sponsors and partners who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment in these trying times, especially the sponsors of our two LET co-sanctioned events who accommodated the schedule changes due to the travel restrictions imposed on South Africa. Moving the tournaments to later dates enables us to draw the strongest fields possible.

“The Sunshine Ladies Tour is strong and continues to grow, thanks to the continued commitment of our stakeholders, including Investec, the municipalities of Joburg and Cape Town, Jabra, SuperSport, Dimension Data, Sun International, and our new sponsors SunBet and RE/MAX of Southern Africa. Our partners have stepped up their investment in women’s professional golf immensely to ensure that our players can continue to level up and chase their Sunshine Ladies Tour dreams in 2022.”

New sponsors

SunBet has added its significant weight and prestige to the Sunshine Ladies Tour and doubled the prize money for the season-opener to R 400 000.

Charlotte Archer, SunBet Marketing Manager, said:

“We are delighted to be supporting the Sunshine Ladies Tour and to partner with the City of Cape Town in hosting the SunBet Cape Town Ladies Open at Royal Cape Golf Club.

“It is exciting to be part of a sport that continues to gain traction worldwide. SunBet has a rich history with many sporting codes in South Africa, and we are extremely proud to become involved in growing and promoting the women’s professional golf game in Africa.”

Increased prize funds

The Dimension Data Ladies Pro-Am in George returns for a ninth successive year a R600 000 purse and an additional prize pool of R 100 000 for the Pro-Am competition.

SuperSport has also partnered with the Sunshine Ladies Tour since its inception in 2014, and Africa’s premier sports platform has stepped up their commitment in 2022 with a huge prize fund increase for the SuperSport Ladies Challenge presented by Sun International, at Sun City.

SuperSport Chief Executive, Marc Jury, said:

“The Sunshine Ladies Tour showcases the incredible talent of women in sport and ensures that these golfers are recognised for their dedication and given opportunities to excel. It has been very exciting to witness the growth of the local women’s professional circuit over the last eight years and we are thrilled to be part of the journey to grow Africa’s premier women’s professional golf circuit.

From an initial purse of R200 000 in 2019, international audio equipment giant Jabra has upped the ante year-on-year and this year will be no different.

The Jabra Ladies Classic at Glendower Golf Club from February 23-25 will not only offer the winner a spot in the field for Jabra Ladies Open on the 2022 LET, but Jabra has boosted the prize money from R 600 000 to a cool R1-million.

Nicolas Bliaux, Vice President / Managing Director for Jabra Eastern Europe, Russia & CIS, Middle East, Turkey and Africa, said:

“The Sunshine Ladies Tour has become a very attractive proposition at the start of the season as we have witnessed the international participation more than triple in the last three years. We are thrilled to share in the promotion and growth of golf among women in Africa and to offer an incentive to the champion to take her career to the next level.”

Co-sanctioned events with the LET

The increasing strength of the Sunshine Ladies Tour is further illustrated with the announcement that the popular Joburg Ladies Open will be joining the LET.

Bongi Mokaba, City of Johannesburg Director: Event Management, said:

“The Joburg Ladies Open has been hugely successful since its introduction on the Sunshine Ladies Tour in 2016 and we are confident that the event will enjoy even more success as a co-sanctioned event in 2022.

“Not only does the Joburg Ladies Open serve an important role in helping to stimulate the South African economy amidst the Covid-19 recovery, but many of our regular Sunshine Ladies Tour campaigners were negatively impacted by the travel restrictions levied this year. The 2022 purse will be €250 000 (approximately R4.5-million) and the winner will gain playing privileges in Europe. We are delighted to play a part in launching the career of the next champion while inspiring the next generation of future stars of the game.”

The Investec South African Women’s Open will continue to be co-sanctioned.

The 72-hole showpiece will be played at the picturesque Steenberg Golf Club, and the field will be competing for an increased purse of €290 000 (approximately R5.2-million), thanks to the support of the City of Cape Town and a new Sunshine Ladies Tour partnership with RE/MAX of Southern Africa.

Alexandra Armas, Chief Executive Officer of the Ladies European Tour, said:

“We are delighted to feature two events in South Africa on our 2022 schedule. We have a longstanding relationship with the Sunshine Ladies Tour and the addition of a new co-sanctioned event will strengthen our collaboration.

“Our sincere thanks to the Cities of Johannesburg and Cape Town, Investec and RE/MAX of Southern Africa for their incredible commitment. This will undoubtedly impact positively on participation and interest in the women’s game in Africa.”

Order of Merit

In addition to Ladies European Tour exemptions and the chance to tee it up in the Jabra Ladies Open, the Sunshine Ladies Tour campaigners will also vie for glory in the points-based ranking system. The top three professionals on the final Investec Order of Merit will gain automatic entry into the 2023 Investec South African Women’s Open, and the winner receives a bonus prize worth R 200,000. Should the winner of the 2022 Investec South African Women’s Open be a South African, she will be rewarded with the Investec Homegrown Award, worth R 100,000.

Women’s PGA of South Africa chairperson, Margie Whitehouse, said:

“The Sunshine Ladies Tour has gone from strength to strength in the past nine years. Once again, thanks to the tremendous support from its loyal partners, sponsors and stakeholders in difficult times, our rising talent will have the opportunity to compete for fantastic incentives and huge purses, and we look forward to watching the future stars showcase their talent on the 2022 Sunshine Ladies Tour.”

SA stars keen to make a point in new Ladies Challenge

ladies sunshine tour south africa

South Africa’s Sunshine Ladies Tour professionals are eager to grab the silverware after the overseas contingent’s conquest of the opening two tournaments this season when the new Fidelity ADT Ladies Challenge gets under way at Blue Valley Golf Estate from Wednesday.

The R250 000 Ladies Challenge makes its debut on the Sunshine Ladies Tour this week and adds significantly to an impressive eight-tournament schedule.

A local champion for the Fidelity Services Group, Southern Africa’s largest integrated security solutions provider and the industry leader in protection innovation, will certainly go down nicely.

The 2024 Sunshine Ladies Tour has teed off on a strong note with Scotland’s Kylie Henry opening the season with victory in the Dimension Data Ladies Pro-Am at Fancourt and India’s Tvesa Malik then winning the SuperSport Ladies Challenge presented by Sun International at the Lost City.

But South Africa’s Lejan Lewthwaite believes this week’s Ladies Challenge offers the perfect opportunity for the local golfers to break that international hold.

“I believe it’s only a matter of time before we have a South African winner this season. There are a lot of really good local golfers and this is only the third event, so we are still getting into the season,” Lewthwaite said.

“I’m definitely confident in the talent we have and any one of us can win this week. But there are a lot of European golfers over in South Africa at the moment. A lot of the top players on the Order of Merit will be playing, so it is still a very strong field. We will have to keep our games on point.”

LEWTHWAITE FULL OF CONFIDENCE

Both Henry, who leads the Order of Merit, and Malik will be teeing it up on the Gary Player design, while Romy Meekers, Lauren Taylor, Ana Dawson and Helen Kreuzer are all in the top-10 of the standings and have entered this week.

Lewthwaite finished 20th at both Fancourt and Lost City and her review of her performance so far makes her feel confident that a strong performance is around the corner.

“I’m hitting the ball quite well but things have just not gone my way yet. That can be the difference between finishing 20th or top-10 and even contending. You need things to fall your way. But the game is there and I just need to build some momentum and I’ll be on my way. I enjoy Blue Valley, it’s a very nice course and should be in good condition. It’s pretty open off the tees and I just want to play to my own strengths, which is a sharp short game. I read the greens well so I’ll be pretty confident around Blue Valley,” Lewthwaite said.

Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour and speaking on behalf of the Sunshine Ladies Tour, said: “Fidelity ADT is a widely respected and highly successful company and it’s a privilege for us to welcome them to the women’s professional golf fold. Their support is creating even more opportunities for our leading women’s golfers and helping to build the next generation of Sunshine Ladies Tour stars.”

23 December 2021 – A bumper season awaits the leading lights of South African women’s golf, and international participants from around the globe when the Sunshine Ladies Tour tees off 2022 boasting a massive prize money hike, two Ladies European Tour co-sanctioned events and new sponsors.

PHOTO – Steenberg Golf Club will host the Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour co-sanctioned Investec SA Women’s Open for the first time from 30 March to 2 April 2022; credit Mark Sampson.

The ninth season will feature seven Investec Order of Merit counting events, starting with the SunBet Cape Town Ladies Open from 2-4 February and culminating with the Investec South African Women’s Open from 30 March-2 April.

“We are proud to unveil a schedule packed with great incentives and nearly R13-million to play for,” said Sunshine Ladies Tour General Manager Pauli van Meersbergen.

“We are incredibly grateful to our loyal sponsors and partners who have demonstrated extra-ordinary commitment in these trying times, especially the sponsors of our two Ladies European Tour co-sanctioned events who accommodated the schedule changes due to the travel restrictions imposed on South Africa. Moving the tournaments to latter dates enables us to draw the strongest fields possible.

SunBet has added its significant weight and prestige to the Sunshine Ladies Tour and doubled the prize money for the season-opener to R 400 000.

“We are delighted to be supporting the Sunshine Ladies Tour and to partner with the City of Cape Town in hosting the SunBet Cape Town Ladies Open at Royal Cape Golf Club,” said Charlotte Archer, SunBet Marketing Manager.

“It is exciting to be part of a sport that continues to gain traction worldwide. SunBet has a rich history with many sporting codes in South Africa, and we are extremely proud to become involved in growing and promoting the women’s professional golf game in Africa.”

“The Sunshine Ladies Tour showcases the incredible talent of women in sport and ensures that these golfers are recognised for their dedication and given opportunities to excel. It has been very exciting to witness the growth of the local women’s professional circuit over the last eight years and we are thrilled to be part of the journey to grow Africa’s premier women’s professional golf circuit,” said SuperSport Chief Executive, Marc Jury.

From an initial purse of R200 000 in 2019, international audio equipment giant Jabra has upped the ante year-on-year and next year will be no different.

The Jabra Ladies Classic at Glendower Golf Club from 23-25 February will not only offer the winner a spot in the field for Jabra Ladies Open on the 2022 Ladies European Tour, but Jabra has boosted the prize money from R 600 000 to a cool R1-million.

“The Sunshine Ladies Tour has become a very attractive proposition at the start of the season as we have witnessed the international participation more than triple in the last three years. We are thrilled to share in the promotion and growth of golf among women in Africa and to offer an incentive to the champion to take her career to the next level,” said Nicolas Bliaux, Vice President / Managing Director for Jabra Eastern Europe, Russia & CIS, Middle East, Turkey and Africa.

Increasing strength of the Sunshine Ladies Tour is further splendidly illustrated with the announcement that the popular Joburg Ladies Open will be joining the Ladies European Tour stable.

“The Joburg Ladies Open has been hugely successful since its introduction on the Sunshine Ladies Tour in 2016 and we are confident that the event will enjoy even more success as a co-sanctioned event in 2022,” said Bongi Mokaba, City of Johannesburg Director: Event Management.

“Not only does the Joburg Ladies Open serve an important role in helping to stimulate the South African economy amidst the COVID-19 recovery, but many of our regular Sunshine Ladies Tour campaigners were negatively impacted by the travel restrictions levied this year. The 2022 purse will be €250 000 (approximately R4.5-mllion) and the winner will gain playing privileges in Europe. We are delighted to play a part in launching the career of the next champion while inspiring the next generation of future stars of the game.”

The Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour will once again co-sanction the Investec South African Women’s Open.

Alexandra Armas, Chief Executive Officer of the Ladies European Tour, said: “We are delighted to feature two events in South Africa on our 2022 schedule.

In addition to Ladies European Tour exemptions and the chance to tee it up in the Jabra Ladies Open, the Sunshine Ladies Tour campaigners will also vie for glory in the points-based ranking system. The top three professionals on the final Investec Order of Merit will gain automatic entry into the 2023 Investec South African Women’s Open, and the winner receives a bonus prize worth R 200 000. Should the winner of the 2022 Investec South African Women’s Open be a South African, she will be rewarded with the Investec Homegrown Award, worth R 100 000.

Women’s PGA of South Africa chairperson, Margie Whitehouse, said: “The Sunshine Ladies Tour has gone from strength to strength in the past nine years.
