Mumbai Local Train Routes

Mumbai’s local train system isn’t just a mode of transport. For many, it’s an experience, an emotion, and a way of life.

Each line runs for over 100 kilometers (62 miles), and over 7.5 million people commute daily via this network!

From Churchgate to Virar – This line will take you through the city’s business hubs and some classic hangout spots.

Central Line

Best Local Train Destinations for Tourists

Each station offers a unique experience:

– Churchgate: Not far from Marine Drive, you will be enchanted by the historical architecture.

– Dadar: Dive into the bustling markets near the station. Central and Western share this stop, and suburban railway stations are nearby.

– Andheri: Enjoy Versova Beach’s serene view. It serves the Western and Harbour lines

Pro Tip: With so much foot traffic nearby, look for street food near the stations. In Dadar, I encountered a local vendor selling the most delectable ‘vada pav.’ That spontaneous food trip remains one of my fondest Mumbai memories!

Local Train Hours of Operation

The first train chugs out at around 4:00 AM, and the last train winds up the day by midnight.

Peak hours? Morning 7-11 and evening 5-9. Best avoided unless you’re up for a *real* challenge.

Pro Tip: Want to see what it’s like on Mumbai local trains during rush hour, but not ready to experience it? Go check out a main station but just watch from a bench with some chai. It’s better than a football game.

Which Local Train Is Best: Slow or Fast?

Ever heard the terms “slow” and “fast” trains and wondered what the fuss is about?

Slow Trains

They stop at every station, making them great for short distances. But, during peak hours, it’s a bit of a hustle. Opt for a slow train during off-peak hours if you’re not in a rush. You’ll get to enjoy the city’s rhythm without the rush!

Fast Trains

These skip several stations and are ideal for longer distances.

Pro Tip: Beware of taking the fast trains on your first trip. Since they don’t stop at every stop, you must ensure the train stops at your station. I made this mistake on one of my first trips!

How To Buy Tickets and Passes

mumbai local train ticket

Navigate through the ticketing process easily:

1. Approach the Ticket Counter for a manual ticket.

2. Download the UTS Mobile App for digital tickets.

3. If staying longer, get a Tourist Pass for unlimited journeys.

Pro Tip: Avoid morning rush hours when buying tickets at the counter. The queues can be daunting!

Train Seating

Suburban_train_interior_in_Mumbai_2009-09-12

Two options are available: First Class and Second Class. While the first class offers a bit more space, the second class gives you an authentic experience. Designated coaches for women and senior citizens are available.

I didn’t see much difference between the seats and there are many more second class options.

Pro Tip: If you’re traveling long, try securing a window seat. The changing landscapes are a treat to the eyes!

How to Use Automatic Ticket Vending Machines on Mumbai’s Local Trains

Ah, the world of technology! If you’re keen on skipping those sometimes endless ticket queues (and trust me, during peak times, you might want to), Mumbai’s local trains have a nifty solution: Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs).

Here’s a quick and easy guide for you to get that ticket and hop onto your next adventure.

1. Locating the Machine:

You’ll find ATVMs at every major railway station in Mumbai. They’re usually near the entrance or the manual ticket counters.

2. Choose Your Language:

The machines often provide options for multiple languages. Simply touch the screen to select your preferred language – typically, English and Hindi are the most commonly used options.

3. Select the Type of Ticket:

You can choose between a single journey ticket, a return ticket, or a platform ticket. Touch the option that suits your requirement.

4. Choosing Your Destination:

A list of stations will appear on the screen. Scroll through and select your desired destination. If you’re unsure of the station name, check a Mumbai local train map or ask a friendly local nearby.

5. Payment:

Insert the exact change into the machine. Some ATVMs might also accept larger notes or even provide change, but it’s best to have the exact amount to avoid any hiccups.

6. Collect Your Ticket:

The machine will print out your ticket once your payment is accepted. Ensure you take it along with any change provided.

7. Smart Cards:

For those planning to travel frequently or even if you’re in Mumbai for a week or so, consider getting a Smart Card. It allows you to preload a certain amount and use the ATVMs without fumbling for change each time. Plus, it’s super convenient!

Pro Tip: Keep the ticket safe to show to any ticket checkers and because you might need it to exit some of the bigger stations.

It might seem daunting at first, especially if there’s a queue behind you, but take a deep breath. With a couple of tries, you’ll be using ATVMs like a pro! And always remember, when in doubt, ask. Mumbaikars are always ready to help, and who knows, you might just make a new friend.

How to Find The Right Train

Dahanu_Road_railway_station_-_Mumbai_EMU_local_train

Mumbai’s train system is vast but not complicated if you know the basics:

– Indicators & Boards: These are your best friends. Always updated with the train’s destination and timing.

– Announcements: They might be fast and in multiple languages, but they’re essential.

Pro Tip: Most locals are friendly. If in doubt, ask someone nearby. Mumbai’s unity in diversity shines on its local trains.

Common Mistakes Tourists Make on Mumbai’s Local Trains

CND-Mumbai Selfie local train

As someone who’s been there and done that (more times than I’d like to admit), here are some of the most common slip-ups I’ve made or noticed tourists often make.

Let’s help you sidestep these for a smoother ride.

1. Getting on the Wrong Carriage:

There are separate carriages for women, and some are specifically reserved during peak hours. Always check the signage and, when in doubt, ask a local. They’re generally more than happy to point you in the right direction.

If you get it wrong, you can easily switch carriages so don’t worry you won’t face jail time!

2. Waiting for Empty Trains:

Ah, the optimism! Mumbai’s local trains, especially during rush hours, are… well, let’s just say ‘bustling’ is an understatement. If you wait for an empty train, you might be waiting forever.

Pro Tip: During peak hours, aim for the first or the last compartments, which tend to be slightly less crowded.

3. Hesitating:

When the train arrives, and there’s a sea of people, it’s natural to hesitate. But that split-second delay can mean missing your train.

Pro Tip: Know which door you’ll be exiting from before your stop arrives. Stand ready and move with the flow.

4. Not Keeping Personal Belongings Safe:

Just like any crowded place in the world, there’s always a slight risk of pickpocketing.

Pro Tip: Use a money belt or a front-facing backpack. Always be aware of your belongings, especially in dense crowds.

5. Mispronouncing Station Names:

I once asked a local for directions to ‘Versova’ (mispronounced), and got sent on a wild goose chase. You can show a photo of the name on your phone to be sure.

Pro Tip: Listen to the announcements or ask multiple people if unsure. Sometimes the pronunciation can make all the difference!

6. Avoiding Eye Contact:

In many cultures, avoiding eye contact is polite. But a friendly nod or a brief smile can make your journey more pleasant. Mumbaikars are friendly, and a small gesture can lead to a heartwarming conversation.

Pro Tip: Don’t be shy to strike up a chat. You might just end up with a local tip or two.

While these might seem daunting, remember that every traveler, including yours, has had their share of blunders. Embrace them, laugh them off, and keep moving. Mumbai awaits, and its local trains are the best way to truly feel the city’s pulse.

Tips for Safely Riding The Train

Mumbai_Suburban_Railway_2009-09-27

Safety is paramount:

– Stay Alert: Beware of pickpockets, especially during rush hours.

– Boarding/Alighting: Wait for the train to halt completely.

– Train Etiquette: Respect it. Mumbai takes its train etiquette seriously.

Pro Tip: Always carry a small water bottle, especially during summer. Mumbai’s humidity combined with the train’s hustle can be draining!

My Mumbai Local Train Experiences

CND-Mumbai street food friends selfie

I stayed near Marine Drive to take the train from Churchgate north to Bandra. There’s a great beach there with street food named Juhu Beach, which you can reach from the Santacruz station.

On off-hours, there is plenty of space. I was able to shoot a video and get great shots of the city as it woke up.

I took a peak-hour train, and there was some pushing and shoving. I ensured I was far enough inside the train to be clear of the doors as we sped through the stations.

But I did make one local mad. He was trying to push by me and asked me to move so he could get by. Well, I couldn’t go anywhere and give him any space, so he had some harsh words for me. But he made it past fine though, so no harm was done.

Everyone else was friendly and helpful. I made friends in the ticket line and asked about how to board, and tips from a local girl.

Overall, it’s an experience you’ll want to have in Mumbai. And it beats sitting in traffic, which can be pretty jammed.

Mumbai’s Local Trains: A Glimpse into Their Fascinating Past

mumbai local train and tracks with power lines

When I rode theMumbai local, amidst the cacophony and crowds, I enjoyed thinking about what it must have been like ridign these trains over a hunrded years ago.

These trains are more than just a mode of transport – they’re a living testament to Mumbai’s ever-evolving saga.

Here are some intriguing highlights from the tapestry of Mumbai’s local trains:

1. The Birth of a Legacy – 1853:

Can you believe that Mumbai’s train system is over a century old? The first train in India ran between Bori Bunder (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and Thane on April 16, 1853. It marked the start of Mumbai’s love affair with local trains and India’s tryst with railways.

2. The Transition to Electric:

Initially, steam locomotives pulled these trains, belching out clouds of smoke. But come 1925, Mumbai saw its first electric train, a massive leap forward in efficiency and speed. The line? Between Bombay VT (Victoria Terminus) and Kurla.

Fun Fact: The decision to electrify the railways was taken in 1915, and it took a whole decade for the dream to become a reality!

3. The Introduction of the Iconic DC/AC System:

In the early days, Mumbai’s trains ran on a Direct Current (DC) system. However, this system wasn’t energy-efficient. After years of planning and groundwork, by 2012, the entire Mumbai local train network transitioned to the Alternating Current (AC) system, marking a significant technological advancement.

4. Ladies’ Special – Empowering Women since 1982:

On May 5, 1982, Mumbai introduced a monumental train service – the “Ladies’ Special.” Dedicated exclusively to women, this initiative ensured safer and more comfortable travel for the city’s female populace.

5. More than Just Trains – Lifelines:

During Mumbai’s devastating floods in 2005, when most of the city came to a standstill, the local trains played a pivotal role. They resumed operations faster than most other services, becoming a beacon of hope and resilience for the city. It was a stark reminder of their crucial role in Mumbai’s daily life.

6. Architectural Wonders:

Many of Mumbai’s train stations, like the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), are architectural marvels and have historical significance. CSMT, formerly known as Victoria Terminus, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its Victorian Gothic Revival architecture.

7. Platform Tales:

Dadar station, one of Mumbai’s busiest, sees footfalls equivalent to the entire population of a small country every day! It’s a bustling hub connecting the Western and Central railway lines. The first time I visited, the sheer number of people left me awestruck. It truly epitomizes the phrase ‘Mumbai never stops’.

Every hum, rattle, and rhythm of the local trains tells a story – tales of progress, a city’s growth, dreams, and challenges. As you travel on these trains, remember you’re not just commuting. You’re becoming a part of Mumbai’s rich, enthralling history. Enjoy the journey!

Is the Mumbai Local Train safe for tourists?

Absolutely, just maintain general vigilance. Watch your belongings, be polite, and move with the flow. Stay clear of the doors and don’t try hanging out the door for a great photo. People die every year riding the local train

How do Mumbai locals feel about tourists?

Mostly warm and welcoming, but avoid photographing without permission. Be ready to move with the flow of traffic. Be sure to let those coming and going have space, even this means doing some pressing yourself. Personal space is not too common during rush hour on the local trains.

Final Thoughts

Navigating the Mumbai local trains might seem daunting initially, but with the right insights and a bit of local knowledge, you’ll master the art in no time.

Remember, learning how to travel Mumbai’s local trains is not just about getting from point A to point B. It’s about immersing yourself in the city’s vibrant rhythm, connecting with its soul, and witnessing the spirit of Mumbaikars firsthand.

So, the next time you’re on the platform, ticket in hand, waiting for your train, take a deep breath, embrace the adventure, and know that you’re about to experience one of the most authentic aspects of life in this incredible city. Safe travels and happy riding!

A Complete Guide to Taking Mumbai's Local Trains

mumbai local train travel

Mumbai’s local train system is undeniably the city’s lifeline and among the most unique experiences you can have in the city. However, being so notoriously crowded, the Mumbai local has remained one part of the city that only the most daring of outsiders venture into. However, with our guide to the city’s trains you will be able to navigate this integral part of the city better.

Routes and train lines.

Traveling over 300 kilometers, the train network is divided primarily into 4 major lines; the Western, Central, Harbor, and Trans Harbor Lines. The Western stretches from Churchgate in South Mumbai to Dahanu Road on its northern outskirts, spanning along the western half of the city. With stops at all the city’s most popular neighborhoods, including Bandra, this is likely going to be your most frequented train line if you are in the city for a short visit.

The Central line expands from the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) Railway Station through the city’s eastern half to branch into separate sub-lines that stop at the towns of Kasara and Khopoli. The harbor departs from CST and covers major stops in Navi Mumbai—with Panvel being the final stop. Trans Harbor trains run between Thane in Northern Mumbai to Navi Mumbai.

Anatomy of the Mumbai Local

Each of Mumbai’s many local trains offers you the option of traveling in a first or second class compartment. A first class ride will drain your wallet, but it comes with the luxury of more space (except during rush hours), comfortable seating, and better ventilation. However, no mode of transport in the city can compete with the incredibly low prices of a second class local train ride. If you are a woman, you can also choose to ride in one of the four or so “ladies’ compartments”—with two of those being first class.

Every station is equipped with manned ticket counters as well as ticket vending machines. You can purchase a Smart Card to avoid the tardier ticket counters and just deal with the machine. Even better, you can buy yourself a one, two or five-day unlimited tourist pass from any of the city’s train ticket counters. While trains begin to run at 4 a.m. and keep doing so until 1 a.m., with a few even running until 2 a.m., only the automated ticket counters are open during this entire time span.

The easiest way to figure out the city’s train systems is via the handy M-indicator phone app. Available on iOS and Android , this very popular app gives train timings and routes, as well as a fare calculator. It even has a chat function for each of the city’s train lines where commuters can give each other a heads up regarding train delays or other happenings.

Mumbai Local Trains 101- A Complete Beginner’s Guide

Table of Contents

1. e-tickets, 2. m-indicator, 3. ladies, general and handicapped compartments, 4. first class and ac locals, 5. fast and slow trains, 6. peak hours, 7. ask questions, 8. virar locals (western line only), stand on the correct side, 10. confusing platforms and station names.

Welcome to Mumbai. The most common mode of transport used by the people in the city are the local trains, the lifeline of Mumbai. The cost of living in Mumbai is high, which is why people do not mind spending even 4 hours commuting to their workplace or college. Travelling by local trains can seem a bit daunting, but with these tips you’ll master the art soon. Eventually you’ll get so used to it, you’ll call yourself a pro. Are you ready to begin your journey? Here’s a guide with everything you need to know!

The routes are divided into 3 lines: Western, Central and Harbour and these tips are applicable to all of them.

mumbai local ticket machine

Reach a ticket counter anytime and you’ll be caught up in a long queue. If you’re running late it could be worse. The best way to avoid all of it is to book tickets online through the UTS app . Either book paperless tickets or tickets you can print at the ATVM machines at the stations. You can also get yourself a smart card using which you can book your tickets through the ATVM machine and skip the queue . This is perfect for those not travelling frequently. If you are a daily traveller , get yourself a monthly, quarterly or yearly pass that will save you both money and time.

Also note that you cannot be at a station without a ticket , even if you’re not boarding a train, you will require a platform ticket.

m indicator

M-indicator is a mobile application that is a blessing for everyone travelling by local trains. You can check train schedules , ticket fares and also track where the train is. It also tells you which platform the train will halt on and provides travel routes to your destination. There is also a train chat option, where users discuss train schedules, notify about problems and any other queries. The app notifies users when there will be a Mega block (track maintenance). This app is really helpful for anyone travelling in Mumbai. Apart from locals, you can get information about BEST buses, ferries, metro, outstation trains and much more.

mumbai local compartments

A train is divided into various compartments for the ease of its travellers. There are 4 ladies compartments (including the first class). This is for the comfort and safety of female passengers travelling, especially during peak hours. While some are 24hr ladies only, the others allow men after 11pm till 5am .

There is also a handicapped compartment for people with disabilities and is indicated with a sign and a beep sound on the platform. People diagnosed with cancer and women in advanced stages of pregnancy are also allowed to travel in this compartment. Anyone else found travelling can be fined.

The general compartments include 3 general first class and the rest are second class compartments. Anyone can travel in it. It is not a men’s compartment . But it is better for women to avoid using it when it is extremely crowded.

first class and ac mumbai local

Your regular 12 coach train will be divided into First Class and Second Class. There are 3 General First Class and One Ladies First Class. If you’re travelling during peak hours, you won’t see much difference in the amount of crowd there, sometimes it can be more due to fewer compartments. But if you travel during non peak hours or on a holiday you’ll get empty first class compartments, while the second class will be crowded(not peak hour crowd)

First class passengers do not have to wait in the queue for booking a ticket or pass and can directly go to the counter. If anyone asks just tell them you are booking a first class ticket. The first class has cushioned seats and the compartment has stripes painted on the outside along with “ I ” written.

The prices of first class tickets can be more than 10 times that of a second class ticket. The price differs as per the distance. A first class pass is cheaper than buying a ticket everyday and is around 3 times the price of a second class pass. If you’re a student, you can get a concession on the first class pass by filling a form in your respective college. The benefits totally depend on the time you travel at.

There are also AC locals available at certain timings. The cost of the tickets are higher than that of first class and the trains are always empty.

fast and slow trains mumbai

There are both fast and slow trains. Fast trains are those that halt only at certain stations. Slow trains on the other hand halt at every station. The indicator will display F and S respectively. There are also semi fast trains, that are fast up to a particular station and slow after that. Before boarding a fast train make sure it halts at the station you want to get off at. The indicator displays “destination- scheduled time- F / S- expected in minutes ” in that particular order. For example “Bo 8:42 F 03” (destination Borivali, 8:42 Fast train, expected in 3 minutes)

mumbai train peak hours

While travelling try avoiding the peak hours. This is between 8 am to 10 am (towards Churchgate and CST) and between 5 pm to 7 pm (towards Virar and Thane) . This is usually when everyone leaves for and from work and getting caught up in this rush hour is horrible. It is not an exaggeration. And if you’re new to the city, be sure to skip around 3-4 trains at this time till you finally push your way through. The trains are overcrowded and people hang right outside. You want to avoid this as much as you can.

If you have to travel at this time, DO NOT get into the compartments near the ladies first class. Always opt for the middle compartments, or the ones at the beginning in the direction the train is heading. These compartments usually tend to be a little less crowded.

ask questions

Think of this as a golden rule. Always ask. Ask people where they’re getting off and make sure the one ahead has the same destination as you or be ready to reach a few stations ahead while people behind you yell at you.

If you want a seat , ask people where they will be getting off and claim the seat. Tell them you will sit there next. You cannot expect to get a seat without claiming one. It may seem weird at the start, but you’ll get used to it.

Ask people around you if you’re confused. The people selling at the stalls are aware about everything and will help you. It’s better to ask more than one person to be sure.

virar locals

Virar locals are a nightmare during rush hours for anyone travelling on the Western line, if you’re not getting off beyond Borivali. Trying to get off at Andheri or Borivali is quite a task, speaking from personal experience. You will be asked why you couldn’t take a Borivali local and will be allowed to get off with great difficulty. So it would be great if you avoid boarding Virar locals during rush hours if you plan to get off before Borivali.

9. Unspoken Rules

unspoken rules of mumbai locals

Bag in the front always . This makes sure that all your belongings are safe . Locals and platforms are crowded, and having an eye on your bag is necessary. This is also important to ensure that your bag doesn’t get in the way of yourself or others while getting on or off. Keeping your bag behind may be a hindrance for anyone trying to get in after you and also it may get stuck while you’re trying to get off.

While travelling during rush hour, make sure you stand on the side from where people will be getting off. They usually leave space for people getting in and you do not want to be blocked by that crowd. Don’t forget to confirm if the person ahead is getting off at the same station as you!

station names in mumbai

Stations that have multiple lines running can sometimes be confusing. For example Dadar western line and central line have different platforms with the same numbers. So make sure you’re at the right place to board the right train.

Other confusing things can be stations with similar names on different lines. For example the station Matunga Road is on the western line while Matunga is on the central line. Similarly Lower Parel is on the western line and Parel on the central line, and no they’re not the same, in fact to reach Parel from the western line you have to get off at Prabhadevi and use the bridge to get to the Central line. Yep! It’s confusing.  Also, keep in mind names of stations that have changed, some people may still refer to them using the old names.

Hope this gives you some insight on what it’s like travelling by local trains. You’ll learn as you travel and you’ll learn everyday. Try ignoring small faults and avoid getting into unnecessary fights(especially with ladies) Don’t hesitate to ask people even the silliest detail if you’re confused!

Travel safe!

Which stations does the AC local halt at?

The air-conditioned train halts at Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Bhayander, Vasai and Virar. From November 1, the AC local is likely to also halt at seven more railway stations: Marine Lines, Charni Road, Grant Road, Dahisar, Mira Road, Naigaon, Nallasopara. Perhaps to make up for the additional journey time, the top speed of the train will be bumped up from 70km/hr to 90km/hr.

Mumbai AC local train fare

As you'd expect, passengers have to shell out premium fare for the AC experience. Ticket price for a single journey on the AC train is 1.3 times that of the same journey in First Class.

The ticket price for a single journey starts at Rs60 from Churchgate to Mumbai Central, with a steady increase (Rs85 till Bandra, Rs125 till Andheri, Rs165 till Borivali and Rs205 till Virar).

Unlike regular local trains, the AC service will have a special weekly and fortnightly season ticket. A special weekly pass will cost anything between Rs285 till Mahalaxmi, to Rs945 till Andheri going all the way up to Rs1,070 till Virar. The fortnightly season ticket starts at Rs430 going up to Rs1,555 till Virar. Remember: the trains will not operate on weekends.

The monthly pass on the AC local train will cost between Rs570 to Rs820 (till Bandra) to Rs1,240 (till Andheri) to Rs1,640 (till Borivali), capping at Rs2,040 till Virar.

How to buy tickets for the AC local

There are four ways to buy tickets for Mumbai's AC local train:

You can purchase one at the ticket counter

You can book one through the Railways' official UTS mobile ticketing app just before you hop on to the train.

If you're carrying a single-journey First Class ticket, you can buy an upgrade on the train by paying the fare difference.

If you hold a First Class pass, or season ticket as it is called, you cannot buy an upgrade on the train. You will have to go right back to the ticket counter and buy an upgrade by paying the fare difference.

More AC locals coming soon?

Yes. There's currently just one AC local train that runs between Churchgate and Virar. From January 2019, a second AC local will be pressed into service on the same route. The new AC local will have a capacity for around 1,300 passengers, 100 more than the current one. Once that kicks in, the AC local frequency is likely to double.

In addition, from May 2019, Western Railway also plans to introduce "semi-AC locals". Around 78 trains will be fitted with six air-conditioned coaches each.

Central Railway is also set to get its first fully air-conditioned AC local by end of 2019. CR is yet to decide where to deploy it: on the Main, Harbour or Trans-harbour route.

Mumbai Local Train Map

mumbai local train travel

The  Mumbai  local train rail network runs from one end of the city to the other, from north to south. It's divided into three lines -- Western, Central, and Harbour lines.

If you're planning on riding the Mumbai local train, print this handy Mumbai local train map out and take it with you (click here to enlarge it). It will make it easy for you to get around!

What to Know

  • The three lines of the Mumbai local rail network fall into two zones of Indian Railways. Western Railway is responsible for services on the Western Line, while Central Railway operates the services on the Central Line and the Harbour lines.
  • The numbers next to the stations on the map represent approximate distances, in kilometers, from the originating station.
  • The Western Line starts at Churchgate, in Mumbai's business district, and follows the city's west coast about 124 kilometers north to Dahanu Road (towards Ahmedabad).
  • The Central and Harbour lines both commence at Chhatrapathi Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus) just north of the Fort area in Mumbai.
  • The Central Line runs out towards the northeast of city, through Thane, and branches off when it reaches Kalyan. From there, it divides into two corridors, to Kasara (towards Nashik) and Khopoli (towards Pune).
  • The Harbour line branches off at Wadala Road, and from there runs to Andheri and Panvel (through Navi Mumbai).
  • The Western and Central lines converge at Dadar station, while the Harbour and Central lines interchange at Kurla. The Harbour Line also joins the Western Line at Mahim Junction.
  • Although the train lines fall into different zones, it's possible to change trains and travel on different lines without having to buy separate tickets for each one. Tickets are sold at the originating station on a point to point (destination to destination) basis. (There is also a new Mumbai Metro train line from Andheri to Ghatkopar. However, this requires a separate ticket).
  • The Western and Central lines have both Fast and Slow train services, while there are only Slow trains on the Harbour Line. Slow trains stop at all stations. The Fast trains will stop at major stations (indicated in red on the map), and some semi-fast ones will stop at additional stations.
  • Most trains start running from around 4 a.m., and the last departures from Churchgate and CST are at around 1 a.m. There are a few trains that depart later though. Western Railway trains tend to be more frequent and punctual.

Accessibility

Western railway.

  • The following coaches on Western Railway are reserved for people with disabilities, people with cancer, and people in an "advanced stage of pregnancy": 12 car trains - 4th and 7th coaches from Churchgate end; 15 car trains - 4th, 7th, and 10th coaches from Churchgate end
  • Between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm the 3rd and 12th coaches from Churchgate end are reserved for people age 60 and older
  • Stations have tactile paths on platforms and audio visual indicators in front of coaches reserved for people with disabilities

Mumbai Local Train: The Ultimate Guide

Hi, we are back today with another interesting article about Mumbai. The feature of this blog is Mumbai Local and its important aspects. Mumbai Local train is often considered the backbone of the city. The local trains of Mumbai have served as a cultural symbol, especially in the entertainment industry. A simple scene of a running train is enough for anyone to identify Mumbai city. These local trains are seen even in black and white Bollywood movies .

In this article the topics we shall be covering are:

About Mumbai Local Trains

Mumbai local map, how to read the mumbai local train indicator, mumbai railway station list, mumbai local station codes, mumbai local rush hours, how to travel on mumbai local, important junctions, mumbai local ticket & pass fare, cultural importance, local train timetable.

The first train in India ran from – Mumbai (then Bombay) to Thane on 16 April 1853. This route is one of the most populous routes in today’s Mumbai Local train route. The train started from Bori Bunder Railway Station to Thane. This run is often considered the first Mumbai Local Train.

Now fast-forwarding to 1867; 14 years after the first train. In 1867, today’s Western Railways began its operations. The first train was from Churchgate in Mumbai to Virar in Thane.

The Harbour Line of Mumbai Local Trains was started in February 1925, when a train started its journey from then Victoria Terminus (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) to Coorla Harbour (now Kurla).

That is more than enough history on Mumbai Local, now coming to the more important aspect, what are the things to know about Mumbai Local Railways?

There are primary lines of Mumbai Local and 2 secondary lines, making Mumbai Local one of the most complex, yet efficient suburban train networks in India.

Primary Railway Routes:

Western line.

Western Line is the busiest line in the Mumbai Local Network. It is managed and operated by Western Railways. Please note that the Western Line and Western Railways are two different entities. Western Railways operates all the trains that lie on the western region of the Indian Railway network. Whereas, the Western Line is a route on Mumbai Local’s train network.

The trains start from Churchgate station in Mumbai. The destination varies on schedule. However, Dahanu Road is considered the last stop in this line.

Two types of trains run on this route fast and slow. The slow trains halt at all the stations whereas fast trains halt at selective stations. For further information on the stops of fast trains refer to the map below. 12-Coach and 15-Coach trains operate on the Western Line.

Western Line is the only Mumbai Suburban Division Railway division that operates AC local. This local train operates occasionally throughout the day. See the timetable for timings.

Central Line

The central line of Mumbai Local suburban division has two lines. Both the lines start from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and diverge after Kalyan. One route ends at Khopoli; whereas, the other route ends at Kasara. The stations till Kalyan are the same. The two lines diverge and lead towards inner Maharashtra. The line ending at Khopoli then goes towards Pune and the other one ending at Kasara is towards Igatpuri.

Central Line of Mumbai’s Suburban Railways is operated by Central Railway. Both terms are completely different. Central Railway is a governing body that looks after operations. Whereas, Central Line is a route on Mumbai Local.

The Central Line is less busy than the Western Line but covers longer distances. Fast and Slow trains run on this line, with slow trains halting at all the stations and fast trains halting at specific stations. Central Line operates 12-Coach and 15-Coach trains. The frequency of the 15-Coach train is very less. The major function is during the rush hours of Mumbai Local Train.

Harbour Line

Harbour Line of Mumbai Local primarily operated on the harbour line of the city. However, with the expansion of the city and difficult commute, this line was extended. Currently, the Harbour Line starts from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) – Platform 1 & 2 only . There are two different routes on the Harbour Line. The first line ends at Panvel in Navi Mumbai and the other line ends at Andheri in Western Line. Seems a bit complex, indeed, it is. Refer to the map below for a better understanding.

Harbour Line is operated and maintained by Central Railways. Only slow trains are functional on this line, meaning all the trains halt at every station. Harbour Line operates only 12-Coach trains. There are multiple intersections on the Harbour Line. Read below to know all of them.

There are two other Local lines operating in Mumbai:

Trans-harbour.

The trans-Harbour line runs from Thane in the Central Line to Vashi on the Harbour Line. This is a relatively important line for people living and working in the areas on the Thane-Belapur Highway. There are many multinational companies located on this route, thus providing public transportation is essential. Alongside, Mumbai biggest IT Park, MBP (Millennium Business Park) in Mahape is nearest to Ghansoli Railway station on this line.

12-Coach trains run on this line and the operations are taken care of by the Central Railways. All the trains on the Trans-Harbour line are slow trains i.e., a halt at every station. For the overlook of this route, see the map below.

Nerul-Uran is the latest addition to the Mumbai Local Train network. The operations started in November 2018, it is maintained and operated by Central Railways. The route starts from Nerul (between Vashi and Panvel) to Uran, beyond Panvel. The extension is on the Konkan rail route. The trains operating on this route are 12-car. The route is 27 km long, consisting of 10 stations. All the trains on this route are slow trains.

Since the Mumbai Local train network is a complex one, it is essential to understand the routes of different lines. If you are new in Mumbai and have difficulty travelling on the local trains, please carry a Mumbai Local train map.

You can print this map, take a screenshot, or simply bookmark this page for quick access.

It is very important to know to read the indicator. All the stations on the Mumbai Local network feature a display in red, white, or yellow LED. This display lets the passenger waiting on the platform (station) know which train is coming next.

The details featured in any Mumbai local train indicator is as follows:

  • Destination – The last stop/station
  • Time – The scheduled time of the train
  • Speed – Whether it is a fast or slow train
  • Number of Coaches – Whether it is a 12-Coach or 15-Coach train
  • ETA – Estimated Time of Arrival

Western Line Stations

Mumbai Local Western Line Stations

Central Line Stations

Harbour line stations.

Mumbai Local Central Line Stations

The station codes are important because, the indicators only mention the station code, as above. So, it is important to know two things about the station codes:

  • All stations do not have a code, only the destination stations have. In simple words, station codes are only for the last station of specific trains. It might not be at the extreme ends on either of the lines, but up till the train is scheduled.
  • Station Codes are different for different lines, a simple example is that Churchgate on Western Line is “C” , whereas Kurla on Central and Harbour Line is also “C” . So, it is important to know on which line you are travelling.

A line-wise (Western, Central and Harbour) list of Station Codes is mentioned below. Do memorize it. If you are having any difficulty, you can also print it.

Western Line Indicator Station Code

Now that you can figure out the source and destination of your travel. Let us look at the aspect of when to travel on Mumbai Local.

Mumbai Local has a huge rush on weekdays. The specific hours of morning and evening observe the maximum crowd. These couple of hours are Mumbai Local Train’s Rush Hour.

Rush hours as per the day of the week on different lines:

  • Morning: 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM sees the highest public commuting via Mumbai Local.
  • Evening: 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM is the busiest time of the day for Western Line.
  • Weekends (Saturday and Sunday): Travelling throughout the day is comfortable, as the majority of the offices have weekly off on the weekends.

Whether weekend or weekday, avoid travelling in the ever-packed Virar Local. The rush is insane, on average, 1-2 accidents occur alone on this train.

  • Morning: 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM sees the major crowd on the train.
  • Evening: 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM are the most populated hours of the day.
  • Weekends (Saturday and Sunday): On the Central Line, even weekends are quite populated, however, comparatively, it is less crowded. You can travel comfortably. Nevertheless, do not expect a seat as soon as you board the train.

Since Harbour Line has major functionality issues and the frequency is comparatively lower than Central and Western Line, it is always crowded. Though, the crowd travels majorly from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM in the morning and 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the evening.

Trans-Harbour & Nerul-Uran

These are less travelled routes but, peak hours rush from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM in the morning and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the evening are common.

Another important thing is how to travel on Mumbai local. There are four basic rules for travelling on a Mumbai Local train.

  • Boarding – Always allow the people to alight first. Boarding the Mumbai Local can be difficult, especially during rush hours. So, a simple tip is to have either of your feet free and move towards the doors. Lean your body forward and go with the flow. Don’t try and board a train when it’s in motion. Remember, if one leaves, then the next one comes along.
  • Alignment – If you are not boarding the train from the source, there are rarely any chances that you shall be finding a seat. So, it is better to stay put and keep the doors and gangway clear. If there is no room on the inside, maintain the queue on either side of the gangway.
  • There are two indicators in every compartment that displays the next station and destination in English, Hindi, and Marathi. Alongside, the same is announced in all three languages. Make sure you keep your eyes and ears open so that you don’t miss your stop.
  • Alighting – Do not stand at the door when the train starts approaching a station. If you are not a regular traveller, do not even think about alighting from the running train. Not only it is risky, but also it is a criminal offence. Let the crowd in front of you alight and step down carefully once the train is at a halt.

Other things to keep in mind:

  • Do not travel without a ticket. For a fare of Rs. 5, you shall be paying a fine of Rs. 260, when caught travelling without a valid ticket.
  • Check the mark on the outside of the coach you are boarding. If it is marked with red and yellow stripes, then it is First Class.
  • Similarly, check for Ladies only compartment and Handicapped Reserved Compartment as well. It is a jailable offence to travel in these coaches if you do not belong there.
  • Do not stand at the doors. It is dangerous and an offence.

There are several important junctions that allow a passenger to switch their line of travel on Mumbai Local. These junctions are extensively used by Mumbaikars on a daily basis. The list of junctions and the lines on which they are interested are mentioned below:

Important Junctions of Mumbai Local Suburban Railway Network

Mumbai Local train ticket and pass fare defer on distance. The minimum ticket fare is Rs. 5, whereas the maximum fare is Rs. 55 for Dahanu Road from Kasara and vice versa. The minimum fare of a first-class ticket is Rs. 50. Mumbai Local train first-class pass starts from Rs. 165. The ticket fare depends on the distance covered during a journey. Shorter the distance, lower the price, and proportionally for longer distances.

There are a couple of pointers to keep in mind for the ticketing system of Mumbai Local trains:

  • The fare depends on the distance.
  • There are three different types of tickets: Second-Class, First-Class and Luggage.
  • There is no ticket for Differently Abled and Cancer Patients, all they need is their ID card registered with the respective organization defining their different abilities. Ordinary people are not allowed to travel in this, and the fine is different than travelling without a valid ticket.
  • The fine for travelling without a valid ticket or pass is standard Rs. 260. This fine is alike for Second-Class as well as First-Class.
  • Students get a concession from their school & college on a seasonal ticket/pass.
  • Mumbai Local train first-class pass fare is lesser than the total amount of second-class tickets spends.
  • A ticket/pass can be booked online through the UTS app.
  • You can swipe your debit card to purchase/renew a seasonal ticket at any station.
  • A ticket can be issued only from the source of the journey. In other words, you can book a ticket only from the station where the journey starts.
  • Smart Card / ATVM is a great choice to avoid queues to buy a local train ticket.
  • There is a separate queue for 1 st class ticket and pass.

The local train is very important for Mumbaikars.  Every day, more than 7.5 million Mumbaikars travel by Mumbai Local. Thus, Mumbai Local has a lot of cultural significance to Mumbai.

As mentioned in the introduction of this guide, Mumbai Local is the identity of Mumbai city. Mumbai Local is often seen in the movies as the style of telling people that the film or that scene is about Mumbai. Another major identity of this city is closely associated with Mumbai Local Railway, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

Middle-Class/Working-Class

These suburban local train transportations are the primary method of commute for the working class. The intense rush in the morning and evening defines that Mumbai Local is used by several thousand for the commute to work.

Highly Reliable

Mumbai Local trains are highly reliable. Even though, the majority of the times trains are running late from their scheduled time; the frequency of the next one showing is still the same. Unless there is major rainfall, resulting in floods, Mumbai Local is always reliable. With Mumbai Local you beat the traffic and reach any place on time. The only thing you need to do is plan your travel.

The Backbone of Mumbai Police

Mumbai Local is often regarded as the backbone of not only Mumbaikars but also Mumbai Police. It is so popular that Mumbai Mirror editors use this point as a clue in their Crossword.

There are many films either based or revolving around the Mumbai Local. Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local, end sequence of Slumdog Millionaire and Baton Baton Mein are to name a few. These films do not have anything extraordinary, but the fact that Mumbai Local, just makes it relatable. And, once you connect with someone’s heart, there must be something terribly wrong to change their mind.

The local train timetable differs from station to station. The best is to install the m-Indicator mobile app from Google Play Store and App Store. However, the frequency of slow trains on the Western Line is once every 3-minutes. And, on the Central Line, one train is scheduled every 4-minutes.

So yes, that is it. The complete Mumbai Local Guide. Do let us know about your experience with Mumbai Local and its importance for you.

This is the guide on Mumbai Local trains. It is everything you must know, and more. Even then if we have left out any other important aspect, do let us know in the comments below.

mumbai local train

History of Mumbai Local Train

It is believed that the Mumbai Suburban Railway is the oldest railway network in Asia, and it is a component of the oldest railway network in India.

The British East India Company was the one who first established it.

In 1853, the Bori Bunder station in Mumbai, which is today known as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, became the starting point for the first railway to travel between Mumbai and Thane.

After this, in 1867, trains were finally able to run between Churchgate and Virar.

Western Railway and Central Railway

The Mumbai Suburban Railway system, or Mumbai’s Local train, is operated by Indian Railways. The entire rail network of mumbai is divided into two zonal divisions that are Western Railways and Central Railways .

Western Railway operates the Western line, and Central Railway operates the Central line such as Harbour line, Trans Harbour line, Nerul-Uran line.

Each one is more than 62 miles or 100 kilometres long.

Western Line:

The Western Line is operated by the Western Railway(WR), which runs between Churchgate and Dahanu, a 124 km-long stretch. The Churchgate station in South Mumbai is the starting point for the Western Line, which travels all the way to the city’s outer north.

The Western Line consists of 37 stations from Churchgate to Dahanu Road.

Western Railway Line

Initially, the line used to run between Churchgate to Virar (60 KM); however, On 16th April 2013, it was extended up to Dahanu Road.

Western Line Trains are categorised as Fast or Slow trains, which can be either 12 or 15 coach/car. The Fast train will halt only at selected stations such as Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Bhayander, Vasai Road, and Virar. Whereas slow trains will halt at all stations. Western Line also operates AC Train that runs as per the scheduled timing

Central Line :

The Central Line is operated by the Central Railway(CR), which runs between three major corridors. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in South Mumbai, formerly known as Victoria Terminus, is the starting point for the Central Line, which travels to the Kalyan. From Kalyan, the line bifurcate and run up to Kasara and Khopoli.

Central Railway Line - Mumbai

Harbor Line:

The Harbour line is part of the Central Railway, and it operates three major corridors, which are CSMT-Goregaon, CSMT-Panvel, and Panvel-Goregaon.

The Harbour line runs parallel to Central Railway Line for a few stations from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus; however, the Harbour-line bifurcates at Wadala Road Station into two separate corridor routes.

The first route connects Mumbai Western Line at Bandra, which goes up to Goregaon. The second route connects Navi Mumbai, which goes up to Panvel.

Trans-Harbor Line (Thane-Vashi Line):

The Harbour line is another part of Central Railways that connects Navi-Mumbai and Thane.

This line operates two routes, one line run between Thane and Vashi, and another line run between Thane and Panvel. It joins Harbour Line and runs parallelly at Nerul till Panvel, and another line that connects to Vashi joins the Harbour line at Sanpada.

Currently, this line stops at all stations.

Nerul-Uran line:

Nerul-Uran Line is another part of Central Railways that Links Navi Mumbai with Uran.

This line operates two major routes, one between Nerul and Uran and another between Belapur and Uran.

Please note that this line is not fully operational and is currently under construction. Hence, the line is operational only till Kharkopar.

  • Stations served by express trains are shown in red on this map of Mumbai’s local rail system.
  • The trains typically have 12 carriages but may have up to 15.
  • Only the Western and Central lines have the capacity to run fast trains, and these lines are the only ones with trains with up to 15 cars/coach.

My First Mumbai Local Train Experience – Bandra To Andheri

Bushwick Collective Walking Tour

Prior to my recent trip to Mumbai, I had heard and seen a lot of stories where people were offboarded at a station they didn’t intend to by the crowd. Hence, I was scared to get on a metro fearing that I’d miss my station because of the crowd. Fortunately, my first Mumbai local train from Bandra to Andheri wasn’t quite like that. Glad that my first Mumbai local train experience was a good one!

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you know that I’ve been in Mumbai for the last few weeks. I had spent a maximum of 8 hours in Mumbai before this trip. During that trip, things were quite fast and I barely spent time anywhere. So this time around when I was there to board the Cordelia Cruise for the Mumbai High Seas cruise , I decided to stay back in Mumbai.

I realised that I had so many people to meet, places to visit and obviously food to eat, I needed to slow travel in Mumbai and spend some time. So I decided to stay back for a couple of weeks to explore the city.

Moving around Mumbai is easy – only if you know where you are, where you want to go and the mode . From autos to Kaali Peeli, metro to local, there are numerous ways to get around in Mumbai. Mumbai local train is the cheapest and the best.

Bandra To Andheri Mumbai Local Train

Mumbai as a city is rectangular in shape if I can say so. It’s an elongated piece of land surrounded by the Arabian Sea on two sides and mountains and land on the other. The city has got one of the best local train networks compared to any other city in India. Every day millions of people use the Mumbai local to commute. Irrespective of the weather and situation, the Mumbai local train has been there for the people. No wonder it’s the lifeline of Mumbai.

Before you board a local train in Mumbai, you must know the source and destination, the type of local and whether it will go to the destination where you want to go or not. If you are travelling to Mumbai for the first time, then you should read my How To Travel in Mumbai Local Train – For Non-Mumbaikers . Having spent a couple of weeks in Mumbai and using the local train, I’ve written this guide based on my experience. I’m sure you’ll find it helpful.

Mumbai Local Train Guide For Non Mumbaikers

Going from Bandra to Andheri on a local train is quite easy. Trains run at a frequency of a few minutes. So if you are on a leisure trip or just exploring the city you can take on based on your preference. The distance from Bandra to Andheri is about 13 km, the ticket price is Rs 5 and the travel time is about 15 minutes on a slow local train .

One can purchase the tickets from the counter, use the Automated Ticket Vending machines or book Mumbai local train tickets online too. I chose to book it via the vending machine at Bandra terminus. I paid Rs 10 for the return ticket and was all set to experience my first Mumbai local train from Bandra to Andheri.

My First Mumbai Local Train Experience

It was around 6 PM when I reached the station. I was overwhelmed looking at the crowd itself on the foot over bridge. Franky, I did feel a bit scared just looking at the crowd. The display board were quite confusing (not anymore) and I had to ask a couple of people before reaching the platform. Finally, I was at the platform, standing between a huge crowd waiting to board the train.

My First Mumbai Local Train Experience

I knew that getting on the train wasn’t tough, getting out surely was. Within a few minutes, the train arrived and I was on the train in a jiffy. Like the Delhi Metro , the sides of the platforms are fixed. So people stand at the doors based on the station they want to get down at.

Since I wasn’t aware of it, I stood in the middle. I was surrounded by seasoned pros of the Mumbai local train. Some are busy discussing the markets while others listen to music. Everyone was chilled except me. I’m so glad that the local train has an announcement and display board.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Atulmaharaj (@atulmaharaj)

While there’s no map like on the metro train , the display board and the announcements do help. I was constantly looking at the board waiting for it to flash Andheri. In a few mins time, it read Andheri and I quickly made my way through the crowd to get to the gate as soon as possible.

As the station approached, the seasoned pros arrived at the gate. They knew exactly when to get down and how to find their way. The speed of the train slowed down a little and the seasoned folks were already on the platform. I was still waiting for the train to come to a complete stop. A few folks hung to the door giving way to the passengers. I just followed the crowd, and thanks to a gentle push, I was safely down on the platform. Phew! Quite a ride for a first time experience.

Wish every city had a local like Mumbai Local

I got down at the station and headed straight to the nearby shop and bought a glass of Kokum juice. By the time I finished it, another local train went past. I was so relaxed that I had successfully boarded and deboarded the local train. I realised that timing is the key when travelling in Mumbai local train. If you’re on a leisure trip, make sure you time your travel to avoid the crowd.

Ever since my first Mumbai local train ride, I took almost 8-10 rides on the Mumbai local during my stay and I can say that I quite understand how the Mumbai local works. Though I’m still a non-Mumbaikar, I have a fairly good knowledge of Mumbai local train now. So if you’re travelling to Mumbai for the first time and have any queries related to Mumbai locals, feel free to reach out to me.

Many aspects of one of the biggest train networks as Mumbai local trains is one of the largest and many things related must be known. Things like a ticketing system, timetable, fares, regular & air-conditioned trains, security-system, helplines, and more.”

Mumbai Local Trains

  • About Mumbai Local Train Travel Year 2023

Ticketing System

Train routes, timings and fares, railway helplines, about mumbai local trains travel year 2023.

The first few things a person new to this commuting options usually wants to know about are :

  • How a Mumbai local train Looks ? : Below picture displays the latest looks of the local train standing on a railway platform. More pictures of old looks of the same and the current interior and things like railway premise, platform, indicators, etc can be seen at this picture gallery .

Also keep a note (in fact, the correct word is ‘care’) while boarding a destination train like Virar (Fast). If you plan to get down at Borivali (A suburban station between the city and destination Virar) never ever hold on to a Virar fast, People may literally be angry at you. The reason, Virar & Vasai locations in the far north have a huge crowd, and if someone boards this train when already have many direct options to Borivali then it is obvious.

  • Are people helpful ? : And the answer to the question is 100% or almost YES. Ask a question to a guy commuting and 3 standing around will help with suggestions, That’s how it is many times if not always. That is how Mumbai commuters are, Pushy and annoying at times in-crowd but helpful always.

Mumbai Railway Network Map

A few minutes spent on the railway map will help to understand the same. No worries if this is your first time traveling via local trains in Mumbai and that looks a bit complicated because people will always help. Feel free to lightly tap on someone’s shoulder if you experience this (A bit odd, Yet many a time people usually do it to get attention before asking something). Of Course, a gentle ‘Excuse me’ is what is followed by most citizens.

RPF (Railway Police Force) takes extra care during the late-night for women travelers. Proper care is taken care of at railway stations which are far away in the suburbs and are less crowded. So never get worried when around railway premises, But yes always be alert and do not be overconfident at isolated locations unknown or new. Safety care should be taken while traveling on footboard in a crowded train.

Metro Line 7 and 2A have already pulled out a crowd in lakhs (About 10 Lakh at the start of 2023) and Local trains are losing up on the tag of ‘LIFELINE’ .

  • Where can i find more about local trains ? : Refer the train fares and time table section and go through local train article for more insight.
  • Women Safety and Other Facilities ? : Special ladies-only trains are running between Churchgate and Virar and also in the Central route. Separate lady’s ticket counters are available at many stations. Police personnel and Guards are available inside the ladies’ compartment between the Evening and Morning hours which makes ladies feel safe and keep away from unwanted troubles late at night and in the early hours.

More Questions ? : Feel free to use the comment box below and ask anything.

Below are the ticketing modes with details for all types of journey tickets, i.e. One way (Also called ‘Single journey’) and Return journey, First or Second class coach travel, AC or Non AC local trains, Platform tickets, etc.

Those who do not travel regularly on these suburban local trains or are not tech-savvy usually stand in long queues. On heavily crowded railway stations, railway staff members also help to get tickets via ATVM smart card machines (Details below).

Local Train Ticket

Group tickets can be purchased and recharge can be done at station counters. The recharge amount can be anything between Rs.20 to a maximum of Rs.9500 which will be valid for the next 1 year (12 months from purchase). Discounts up to 3% to 5% are given on recharges. An Amount of Rs.50 is taken as deposits which are refundable when card cancellation is requested (Cancellation charges of Rs.30 Applied).

Like ATVM (Which is Smart Card only Operated), Another Cash/Coin-operated only machines are also available which helps tech-savvy commuters to skip the long queues and use the same cash to get all the required journey tickets. This machine is called ‘ ATVM ‘.

ATVM Smart Card Machines

A very important note related to UTS mobile ticketing is that One cannot book the tickets when around/inside the Railway premises. It has to be booked within a 2 km radius area of stations or at a proximity of about 100 meters (Approximate) distance from railway stations. This limitation has been applied considering ticketing frauds (Travelling without a ticket) where a person tries to travel without a valid ticket and upon finding a ticket-checking officer, tries to book immediately to avoid getting caught.

1 Day unlimited travel ticket fares Rs.270 (Adults First Class) & Rs.75 (Adults Second Class). Kids/Child (Rs.170 & Rs.55).

2 Days unlimited travel ticket fares Rs.445 (Adults First Class) & Rs.115 (Adults Second Class). Kids/Child (Rs.250 & Rs.75).

In the above section, I already detailed 3 major routes, Suburban, Major Railway stations, and the best time to travel in local trains. Below is something more one must also know related to local train routes and timings.

Western Railway Route is also called the ‘Main Line’ which connects the Suburban and extreme north stations of Mumbai city (Which are called Vasai Virar locations) and Beyond that is Dahanu and Palghar train stations (Maharashtra state) and is the endpoint for local trains. More ahead and beyond starts Gujarat state.

Inside the heart and core of the city, the very first and one of the oldest railway stations is ‘ Churchgate ‘. The island city almost started around this location. Western Railway local train network lengths a total of 123 Km (76.5 miles), Starting at Churchgate station and ending at Dahanu Road train station.

Suburban railway stations like Andheri, Bandra, and Mahim on the western route also have train options that connect harbor / central railway routes. One of the major stations on the central route is named ‘CSMT’ (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) not very far from Churchgate station, Just the main junction and railway station on extreme end of the central railway route with city core locations which is commonly called ‘South Mumbai’ or SOBO (South Bombay).

Peak Hour Timings : While traveling from North of Mumbai (Vasai, Virar, Borivali, etc) towards South (Churchgate) Morning timings of 8:00 Am to 11:30 Am are considered peak travel times. Similarly, if you are planning your travel towards Virar (North of Mumbai, Beyond Suburban stations) consider timings between 5:00 Pm and 10:30 Pm as peak office hours.

First Train Timings : From Churchgate, the first local train starts at 4:30 Am. Similarly from Virar, the first train is at 3:25 Am, and From Borivali at 3:50 Am. The last train from Virar to Churchgate is at 00:05 Am.

Mumbai local trains are called the lifeline of the city. Daily millions of travelers commute on these trains. Mumbai suburban or local trains are divided into three broad categories:

1. Western Line:  This covers local stations from Churchgate to Dhanu road.

2. Central Line: This covers local stations from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji  Terminus (previously called as VT) to Kalyan, Karjat, Khopoli, Kasara.

3. Harbor line:  This covers Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji  Terminus (VT) to Panvel.

To travel on these local trains, you will have to buy a ticket. You can buy a one-way or return ticket.

  • The return ticket (day pass) is valid till the next day.
  • You need to start the journey within 1hr of purchasing a ticket.
  • Legally you can use this pass for one TO & FRO journey.

If you are a frequent traveler, its better to get a seasonal pass i.e either a Monthly or 3months pass. These passes are very cheap as compared to the tickets.

You can buy tickets or pass for AC, 1st class or 2nd class. Ticket/pass cost varies as per the class.

You can safely guess that there is more comfort and less crowd in tickets with higher cost but it may not always be true.

Mumbai local train starts at morning 330 am and runs till midnight. The least crowded hours are early morning before 630am, afternoons from 12pm to 4pm, and nights after 10pm.

Any time apart these are classified into  rush hour  and  rush hour.

During rush hour, you will find it very difficult to board the train, and during crush hour, its impossible unless you are boarding it from the starting station.

Note: You can download the m-indicator app for train timings. It\’s a very easy-to-use app and gives you instant information about the trains from the origin station you selected.

Railway authorities are planning to provide free wi-fi on local trains in line with the wi-fi provided at many local stations. I have personally used this wi-fi at Dadar station and the speed was good enough for browsing.

Wi-fi will include pre-loaded movies, songs, and web series.

You can also book your platform ticket using UTS App, The process is very similar, just click on the Platform Ticket menu and follow the instructions.

You can book an un-reserved ticket on UTS, the process is the same as booking local tickets. You just have to select Mail or Express from the Train Type dropdown.

Death Toll Reaches 14 In Mumbai's Ghatkopar Hoarding Collapse, With 74 Survivors Rescued

A severe storm wreaked havoc in Mumbai and its suburbs, disrupting all forms of traffic and railway movement. The situation turned chaotic at Thane Railway Station when local train services were delayed, leading to a near-stampede scenario as depicted in a viral video. Hundreds of women were observed struggling to board a crowded train compartment, raising concerns about railway management on social media platforms. Additionally, the storm caused a tragic incident as a massive billboard collapsed at a petrol pump, claiming the lives of 14 individuals.

Central Railway officials stated that local train services were suspended for over two hours due to a bent overhead pole between Thane and Mulund stations caused by strong winds. While slow and delayed services resumed by evening, precautionary measures led to further disruptions, with suburban services halted temporarily at various locations. Consequently, overcrowding at stations became rampant, with some commuters resorting to walking on tracks after their trains halted unexpectedly.

Furthermore, the storm’s impact extended beyond railways, with uprooted trees and heavy rainfall causing massive traffic congestion across the city. The adverse weather conditions underscored the vulnerability of Mumbai’s infrastructure to natural disasters, prompting concerns about preparedness and mitigation strategies. As authorities work to restore normalcy, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust infrastructure and disaster management protocols in urban centers like Mumbai.

A fierce storm crippled all forms of traffic and railway movement in Mumbai and its suburbs yesterday. A massive billboard collapsed and killed 14 people at a petrol pump during the storm.

The local train services were suspended around 4:15 pm for over two hours after an overhead pole got bent due to strong winds between Thane and Mulund stations, said a Central Railway official.

Slow and delayed train services resumed on the main corridor around 6:45 pm.

In a precautionary move, the suburban services were suspended for 10-15 minutes at various locations on both the main and harbour lines, leading to further disruption of services during peak evening rush hours.

They delays and disruptions led to overcrowding at several stations. In some instances, passengers were even forced to walk on the tracks after their trains came to a standstill. Some commuters claimed the trains took longer than usual to reach their destinations.

The suburban services were running at least 15-20 minutes late after the storm, Western Railway chief spokesperson Sumit Thakur told PTI. There was a signal failure near Charni Road Station as well.

On the Metro Line 7, which connects Aarey Colony with Andheri East Station in Mumbai, services were suspended after a banner landed on the overhead wire during the storm, said a spokesperson.

The storm and unseasonal rain uprooted trees and led to heavy traffic jams across the city.

Actor Rashmika Mandanna is getting trolled for her comments on Atal Setu. While speaking to ANI, the Animal actor said, "The journey of two hours can be done in 20 minutes. As in, you wouldn't even believe it! Who would have thought that something like this would have been possible!"

“Aaj Navi Mumbai se Mumbai tak, Goa se Mumbai tak Aur Bangalore se Mumbai tak (From Navi Mumbai to Mumbai, Goa to Mumbai and Bangalore to Mumbai), when all the journeys have been made so easily and with such amazing infrastructure! It makes me proud," she said.

“India is not stopping anywhere. Now, look at the country's growth. It's freaking brilliant in the last 10 years how the country has grown. The infrastructure, the plan in our country, the road planning, everything, it is just brilliant - I think now it's our time! I just got to know that it's all done in seven years, and it's 20 km. It's amazing! Look at it. I am speechless, honestly," she added.

Netizens react to Rashmika Mandanna’s comments

Rashmika’s comments, however, did not go well with a number of social media users. Some pointed out that it would not be wise to assume India is “moving fast" by looking at one bridge.

Some others advised her to see how the situation is in local trains to understand how common Indians are leading their daily life.

“Travel in Virar local sometime... Amazing infrastructure," wrote one user in apparent sarcasm.

“While 14+ people died under an illegal hoarding… Yes! India is moving very fast…." came another sarcastic comment.

“I don’t think Rashmita lives in Navi Mumbai, else she would know that the bridge is completely useless for those living in Navi Mumbai," wrote another user while another called the actor “Wannabe Kangana".

“Take a local train in mumbai during rush hours, you’ll see how india comes to a halt there. India is only growing for the ones with money but india’s poor are a much bigger number and that number is only growing," commented another user.
