One of the most popular sights on Kauai is the stunning Napali Coast. Located on the north west side of Kauai, the 17 miles of coastline is absolutely spectacular. But it’s inaccessible by car, so if you’re hoping to see it (which you definitely should) you’ll need to go by boat, helicopter/plane, or by foot.

There are a lot of different tours to choose from. We’ve listed our top five picks below to help you find the best option for your trip. Read on to learn more about the best Napali Coast boat tours and book your trip.

Check out the tours that leave from Hanalei Bay . – Napali Coast snorkel and sailing tour with a water slide! – Visit the forbidden island of Ni’ihau , snorkel in a crater, and see the Napali Coast. – Our favorite 4.5-hour su nset dinner cruise of the Napali Coast . – Small group, power raft tour of the Napali with snorkeling. – Hawaiian-owned catamaran tour, choose from 4 types of catamarans .

Napali Coast Boat Tour FAQs

The ride to the Napali Coast can be rough. We have yet to go on a tour where someone doesn’t get seasick. So if you are prone to seasickness (or even if you’re not!) you might want to consider taking seasickness medication to help.

What are the different boat options for the Napali Coast boat tours?

Choosing the right type of boat for your adventure is important. The two main options are rafts (including Zodiac rafts) and catamarans (both power and sailing).

Rafts are easily maneuverable and fast, but you’re in for a less leisurely ride. Think of it as an adventure! An adventure where you’ll likely get wet and there’s a chance there won’t be shade. This is something Jordan and I would do but we wouldn’t bring our five-year-old son or our parents on a trip like this.

A catamaran is a more comfortable ride but you do miss some of the pep you get with a raft. It’s not quite as easy to zip in and out of sea caves (conditions permitting). But you’ll have shade and you likely won’t get wet if you don’t want to.

Where do Napali Coast Boat Tours depart from?

There are three main locations that you’ll find as departure points for Napali Coast Boat Tours:

Port Allen: Located just 15-20 minutes from Poipu on the south shore of Kauai, this is the most popular departure point for Napali Coast tours.  Click for directions to Port Allen .

Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor: 30 minutes from Poipu, this is the closest departure point to the Napali Coast from the south side.  Click for directions to Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor .

Hanalei Bay: On the north shore there are a handful of tour operators that leave from Hanalei Bay. This is the closest point of departure to the Napali Coast but the seas do get rough. Tours depart here March/April through October as the winter brings in large swells.

Where should you stay on Kauai? That’s a tough decision.

What’s the best time to visit the Napali coast?

You can visit the Napali Coast any time of year, but if you’re aiming for the calmest seas, your best bet is in the summer. During the winter months (October through March) waves can get large and the surf can get rough. The trip to and from the Napali Coast is rarely super smooth, but it’s usually better in the summer than in the winter.

That said, we’ve done the trip in mid-November and had an absolute blast.

Not sure when to plan your trip? We have you covered with our best time to visit Kauai article .

What’s included on a Napali Coast Boat tour?

There are two ways to see the Napali Coast: on a snorkeling tour or a sightseeing tour. We include options for both below.

On snorkeling tours, you can expect a meal (or two!), drinks (water, juice, soda, and occasionally alcoholic beverages), as well as snorkeling gear and a knowledgeable guide.

On dinner cruises, drinks and food are included as well as a knowledgeable guide.

Is a trip to the Napali Coast worth it?

If you’re coming to Kauai, I think a trip to see the stunning Napali coast is worth it. The stunning mountains and coastline are not accessible by car, so seeing it by boat, helicopter, plane, or hiking is the only way to experience it. The beauty is extraordinary and by taking a boat you also get to enjoy the wildlife that you meet along the way (often dolphins).

It’s one of our favorite things to do on Kauai ! If you have young kids who can’t go on a Napali Coast boat tour, check out our 24 Things to Do on Kauai with Kids .

A Napali Coast boat tour can be a rough ride for those with children or prone to seasickness. We recommend taking motion sickness medicine the night before your boat tour.

If seasickness or the chance of rough seas (winter months) doesn’t sound good to you, consider these other ways to see the Napali Coast of Kauai or go snorkeling on Kauai.

The 5 Best Napali Coast Boat Tours

There are a lot of excellent tours on the island, but we’ve narrowed it down to share with you what we think are the best Napali Coast boat tours around.

Napali Coast Tours from Hanalei Town (North Shore)

If you’re staying on the north shore in the summer, you are close to the Napali coast! So close in fact, that it’s only a 15-minute ride from Hanalei to the start of the Napali coast. But we warned — a trip from Hanalei is an adventure.

The tours run from March through October only (the north shore experiences huge surf in the winter). The catamaran holds 18 passengers and is available for both a morning and afternoon snorkeling tour (4 hours) as well as a 2-hour sightseeing tour (no snorkeling included).

There is no bathroom aboard the boat, so plan accordingly!

The rest of the best Napali Coast boat tours depart from Port Allen and Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor.

Custom-Built Boats for the Napali Coast

Explore the Napali Coast on Kauai-built boats — both a sailing catamaran and a power catamaran that take a max of 41 and 49 passengers, respectively. The owner Kevin is a boat builder. He designs and builds all the boats for Holo Holo Charters.

We’ve gone out with Holo Holo several times and we’ve always enjoyed our trip! We have a video at the end of the article of one of our experiences.

Holo Holo Charters offers four different tour options that all leave from Port Allen:

  • Ni’ihau and Napali Super Tour: 7 hours
  • Na Pali Snorkel Sail: 7 hours
  • Na Pali Sunset Dinner Sail: 4.5 hours
  • Na Pali Sunset Dinner Tour: 3.5 hours

We’ve done both the Ni’ihau and Napali Super Tour and the Napali Snorkel Sail and both were excellent.

Boats are shaded in the cabin area and tours are available to children ages 5 and over.

Snorkeling tours include snorkel gear, breakfast, and lunch, as well as beverages. Sunset cruises include dinner and drinks.

Napali Coast Sailing Tour

Blue Ocean Adventure Tours (Napali Explorer) offers twice-daily power catamaran tours. On each catamaran, you’ll have a max of 40 passengers. The tours leave from the Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor, so it’s the closest spot on the west side of the island to the Napali Coast.

The morning and afternoon tours offer 45 minutes of snorkeling and snorkeling gear is included. On the 4.5-hour tour, you’ll also have a Hawaiian-style BBQ lunch with water, juice, and soda.

And for the kids (and really adults too), there is an inflatable water slide on the boat.

Napali Coast Adventure on a Power Raft (small group tour)

Head out to the Napali coast on a zodiac with Kauai Z Tours. This tour includes snorkeling, but like most of the tours offered, the emphasis is on the scenery and less on the time in the water.

Kauai Z Tours operates their tours on a 25’ rigid hull zodiac boat, which is coast guard approved for a maximum of 14 passengers. Zodiacs or rafts are known for their speed and maneuverability, so this is more of an adventurous ride. There is no shade or covering on the boat, so hats, sun-protective clothing, and reef-safe sunscreen are a must.

During this five-hour tour, you’ll get to cruise up the west side of the island to the Napali coast in a zodiac raft that seats 14. Included in your tour is a dry bag, snorkeling gear, juice and water, as well as a deli-style lunch.

The tour departs from Kekaha (the Kikiaola small boat harbor), which is approximately a 32-minute drive from Poipu. This is approximately 17 minutes up the road from Port Allen (closer to the Napali Coast), where some other tours leave from.

Learn more about the Napali Coast Zodiac rafting tour.

Kauai Z Tours doesn’t just specialize in Napali coast tours — you can book south shore snorkeling tours as well as whale-watching tours .

Hawaiian-Owned Napali Coast Boat Tours

Makana Charters is a native Hawaiian-owned business with ancient roots on the island. They have 15 years of experience running tours on the Napali coast.

Makana Charters offers the same Napali coast tour but on four different catamarans.

Learn more about Makana’s tour and pick the catamaran that’s right for you.

All tours depart from the Kikiaola small boat harbor, approximately 32 minutes from Poipu, a close departure point for the Napali Coast. That means more time is spent seeing the coast and snorkeling, and less time is spent getting there.

Included in the tour is the use of snorkeling gear, juice and water, as well as a deli-style lunch and snacks.

They can accommodate children 3 and up and pregnant women (weather-dependent and with a doctor’s note). They offer morning and afternoon tours as well as private tours.

ALOHA FROM THE NA PALI CATAMARAN CREW

Along the Northwest corner of Kauai lies 16 miles of rugged, inaccessible coastline, known as the Na Pali Coast, meaning “The Cliffs” or “Many Cliffs.”

The Na Pali is home to some of the world’s most famous tropical locations with over 6,175 acres of undeveloped paradise. Although there are a variety of ways to explore the Na Pali Coast, a boat tour departing from Hanalei Bay has been the preferred choice amongst our island’s visitors for decades. Join Hanalei’s #1 boat tour for the adventure of a lifetime to the most spectacular and dramatic coastline on earth!

Aboard our two identical 35′ motorized catamarans, you’ll find the perfect middle-ground between adventure and comfort! Our vessels are small enough to enter sea caves, while large enough to provide enough room to walk around freely even at full capacity. For your comfort, we have provided a spacious restroom, sunbrella shade, forward-facing seating, and a sturdy swim ladder.

Don’t miss this chance to join us, and come experience the “highlight of your trip” with Na Pali Catamaran!

EXPERIENCE THE MOST SPECTACULAR AND DRAMATIC COASTLINE ON EARTH!

Kauai has countless natural places of beauty to experience. Allow us to show you the most beautiful parts of some of the most spectacular and dramatic coastline on earth while maintaining comfort, safety, and adventure simultaneously.

Our 35′ aluminum power catamaran, Kamahele Kai II, is small enough to enter Na Pali’s famous sea caves, yet large enough to be comfortable. Unlike other tour boats that enter the sea caves, our vessel features a bathroom, shade, adequate seating, and room to walk around freely. Even at full capacity, it is not overcrowded.

5-Star Na Pali Coast Adventures

The scenery was breathtaking and the crew was knowledgeable and fun. I recommend Na Pali Catamaran to everyone who loves land, sea and adventure. And the food ain’t bad either.

a drawing of a face

The boat was super clean. The crew was fantastic and they made the tour fantastic! I would highly recommend you take the Na'Pali coast tour with these guys!!!

Na Pali Catamaran tours are a fantastic way to see the Na Pali coast. The boat tour offers views that are not available on the helicopter tours. We especially enjoyed the sea caves and getting to enter one of them. Our tour guides were knowledgeable and made the tour very entertaining. I highly recommend this tour.

The best tour of the Na Pali I’ve ever had. Going into the caves was amazing. My seven year old son was so happy and had a great experience! Thank you all so much!!

We have toured the Na Pali coast several ways (top of Waimea Canyon, a sunset cruise from the west side, powered hang gliders when they were operating) and this experience outdid them all. Captain Lance and Crewman Miguel gave an astounding tour, complete with wildlife sitings, great history and information, and wonderful snorkeling with the turtles. We could tell Capt. Lance loves the sea and is very knowledgeable about ocean conditions. He was able to take us into three sea caves safely. We had a delightful afternoon. We highly recommend this activity for anyone visiting Kauai. Totally worth the time and money.

Top-rated kauai boat tours ★★★★★.

"First: Since the have a small nice boat it is good space. We were a couple and it was 3 others in the boat. Many other companies have a crowded boats (50 plus people). After a short drive we got to see a bunch of dolphins. Great experience!! Drive up the coast with nice stories and scenery was perfect. Only to stop and swim with some turtles. A perfect day!"

"This was absolutely the highlight of our time in Hawaii! If you are on the fence about doing a boat tour, then stop looking now and book with Na Pali Experience. Captain Jon was fantastic, knowledgeable and a wonderful guide throughout the tour. We did the afternoon tour and lucked into amazing weather that allowed us to visit all the sea caves. Snorkeling with sea turtles, incredible views, and coming back with the sunset light hitting the mountains... nothing comes close! We would highly recommend this tour to anyone!"

"My Na Pali Pirates experience was amazing! Fun, fast raft rides on exciting water? Check! Epic views of the Na Pali coast? Check! Sea caves? Check! Snorkeling with sea turtles? Check! But most importantly, Jake and Jacob were incredible incredible guides! Fun and knowledgeable with the perfect amount of dad jokes and great tunes! This is seriously a MUST DO, and I will continue to do this raft tour any time I am back in Kauai! Stop looking at other boat tours of the Na Pali coast and book this one! It's fun and exciting and you will be supporting a LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS! Thank you to "The Jakes" for an epic time!

"The 35’ Deluxe Catamaran “Cadillac of the Caves” was AMAZING! Do not miss this when you’re in Kauai. Brian and Capt. Nate were fun, kind, knowledgeable, patient…all the things. They personally made sure every single person was comfortable and having fun the whole time. They shared tons of knowledge about Kauai and the Napali coast, played music, made us laugh, and were obviously capable and at ease on the ocean. The deluxe catamaran was big enough to be comfortable, but small enough to fit in caves and be an exciting ride. My husband and 7 year old sat in bench seats in the middle of the boat, while my 10 year old and I rode up front for a more exciting ride. We stopped to snorkel and they provided good equipment. They also put out snacks and drinks while we were in the water. They made sure everyone had enough time in the water and didn’t feel rushed back. Our family all took Dramamine the night before and again about an hour before we got on the boat, and we all felt fine the whole time. Do take similar precautions if you’re at all worried about sea sickness. I cannot recommend this company and experience highly enough. It was one of my favorite days ever! It was the experience of a lifetime to take in the gorgeous scenery in such a fun and exciting way. The experience and memories are worth the price. Book it!

"A beautiful small boat tour for 6 cruising the Na Pali coast. The boat is small enough to go into the caves. JD was a great captain! He was very friendly, knowledgeable and experienced which was very reassuring when it came to the big waves since it was a very windy day."

NA PALI COAST TOUR

Season march through november available times morning tour: 7:00 am - 11:30 am afternoon tour: 12:00 pm - 4:30 pm duration 4 hours physical requirements.

The age range for this tour is 4 to 80. Passengers must be able to wade through knee deep water and climb a 5 rung dive ladder to board the vessel. We advise pregnant women, anyone with serious back problems, knee problems, recent surgery or other health concerns to consult one of our agents before booking a tour.

One of a select few tour-boat companies departing from Kauai's North Shore, Na Pali Sea Breeze Tours offers north shore snorkel adventures second to none. Leaving from the Anini Beach Park boat ramp, we arrive at the Na Pali coast much quicker than tour operators leaving from the South side.

Come aboard the Sea Breeze with Captain Bob and the crew to explore the incredible rugged beauty of Kauai's Na Pali Coast. Our tour includes early Polynesian legends and interesting facts about this remote coastline of Kauai and the ancient people that lived in these verdant valleys. Passengers are dazzled by the beauty of the thousand foot cliffs (Na Pali) while the Sea Breeze skirts the shore the entire trip.

Weather permitting, we will go into several sea caves, and moor at an offshore barrier reef near a turtle cleaning station. You will snorkel along the live coral reef, right off the boat before being served a tasty lunch of fresh deli sandwiches, seasonal fruit, chips, sodas and water. ( Bring your own snorkel equipment for safety) We then head back to civilization at our home port, Anini Beach.

The tour lasts 4 hours, plenty of time to take photographs, view sea life, dancing dolphins that swim alongside the wake of the boat and sea turtles and many varieties of colorful fish while snorkeling. We have lots of friendly folks that return year after year to take another look at this rugged coastline on our boat, to again feel the splendor of the Na Pali Coast.

We continue to try to improve the tour and manage the cost of our tour by keeping the tour family owned and operated, although we have 3 captains who have joined our ohana to help us all along; Captains Chris, Ryan and Pepe. They are joined by a trained crewman to insure our passengers’ safety. Come along with us to experience the magnificent Na Pali Coast while on Kauai.

What to Bring

For all of our boat tours we recommend that you pack lightly and dress comfortably . We suggest bringing a light jacket or sweatshirt, camera, water shoes and towel . It's a good idea to take Dramamine or Bonine 30 minutes before the tour if you are not 100% sure you won't get seasick. We do provide snorkel gear but it's always best to bring your own. Don't forget sun protection - reef safe waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and a hat - to prevent getting a sunburn. Most of all, bring your sense of adventure and be prepared for the awe inspiring beauty of Kauai's rugged coastline!

The Best Kauai Boat Tours

sailing along razor edged cliffs, rising more than 3000 feet high, on the remote and rugged napali coast of kauai, hawaii.

From humpback whales and spinner dolphins to peaceful sea turtles, Hawaii's beautiful seas teem with wildlife. Observing these creatures alongside Kauai' s dramatic cliffs is best done from the water aboard a catamaran, a kayak or even an inflatable raft. U.S. News selected the following Kauai boat tours as the best available after analyzing both traveler and expert opinion.

Best Napali Coast Boat Tours

The tour also includes a hot dinner, as well as mai tais, beer and wine. Tourgoers describe the crew as exceptional and say the views are fabulous. Reviews for the food are more mixed, with many describing the dishes as average. Several travelers also warn of choppy waters and advise taking motion sickness medication ahead of your cruise.

In addition to snorkeling equipment, tourgoers also have access to boogie boards, pool noodles and a slide on the boat. The trip also includes breakfast and a deli-style lunch with beer, wine and mai tais, as well as nonalcoholic beverages. Travelers report seeing lots of wildlife and praise the friendly crew.

Kauai Sea Tours – Na Pali Raft Tour

Thanks to the boat's design, it can access sea caves, go beneath waterfalls and hug the coast, allowing passengers an up-close look at nature. Participants have the opportunity to snorkel and enjoy a packed lunch and nonalcoholic drinks while on the excursion. Tour-takers praise the crew and say they enjoy the views and the plentiful wildlife, ranging from dolphins to monk seals to turtles. Others caution the ride can get choppy.

Trips depart at 7 a.m. year-round, and additional tours at 1:30 p.m. are offered from June through August. Kids must be 7 or older to participate. The company also offers whale watching tours and sunset cruises on traditional boats.

Na Pali Coast Tours – Na Pali Sight See Adventure

Price: From $250 Duration: 2 hours

Calling all thrill-seekers! This catamaran tour departing from Hanalei Bay promises lots of adventure, jaw-dropping views and plenty of speed. As you travel along the coast, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, sea turtles, humpback whales (in winter), waterfalls and rainbows. Travelers rave about the stunning views and appreciate the captain and crew's knowledge of the island's history and wildlife. Reviewers also appreciate the ability to access multiple sea caves thanks to the boat's easy maneuverability. Though the boat affords up-close views of the coast, it doesn't protect against sea spray and is not equipped with a restroom, so keep that in mind when booking.

Tours typically depart Monday through Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (though offerings may vary by season). A maximum of 18 passengers are permitted on board. Due to the more adventurous nature of this tour, it's not recommended for children younger than 4 years old, pregnant people or those with back or neck issues. If you're hoping to explore in the water, consider the company's four-hour snorkeling tour.

17 Miles of Breath-Taking Beauty

Kauai’s stunning napali coast.

The Na Pali Coast is one of the most recognizable and beautiful coastlines in the world.  “The cliffs” up to 4,000 feet high, provide a rugged grandeur of deep, narrow valleys ending abruptly at the sea.  Spanning 17 miles along Kauai’s North Shore, the Na Pali Coast is a sacred place defined by extraordinary beauty.

The rugged terrain appears much as it did centuries ago when Hawaiian settlements flourished in these deep, narrow valleys, existing only on the food they could grow and the fish they could catch. Extensive stone-walled terraces can still be found on the valley bottoms where Hawaiians once lived and cultivated taro.

Kauai Boat Tours

Fact: it’s impossible to drive all the way around Kauai. If you imagine Kauai like a clock, there are roads from 12oclock at the top (Hanalei) to about 9oclock on the left (Kekaha).  The remaining northwest quadrant, from about 9oclock to noon, is home of the sacred Napali Coast– protected as wilderness, and inaccessible by car. Which means that if you want to truly explore all of Kauai, you’ll want to get on board a Kauai boat tour with Holo Holo Charters.

Our Napali Coast boat tours depart from Port Allen, on the island’s southwest shore. If we’re sticking to our clock analogy—Port Allen sits at about 7oclock. Our guests experience all of Kauai’s west side before traveling into the heart of the shockingly beautiful Napali Coast. This coastline is home to spectacular 4000’ cliffs, vast emerald valleys such as Kalalau Valley and Honokoa Valley, numerous cascading waterfalls, pristine beaches such as Hanakapiai Beach and Miloli’i Beach, the Open Ceiling Sea Cave, the Honopu Rock Arch, wildlife, rainbows, and ocean wildlife including Hawaiian spinner dolphins, green sea turtles, and seasonally, humpback whales.

Napali Coast Boat Tours

Visiting Kauai without seeing the Napali Coast would be like going to Athens and ignoring the Acropolis. After traveling all this way, you owe it to yourself to splurge on a Napali Coast boat tour. In the mornings, we offer action-packed sailing and snorkeling tours that are perfect for families and couples that want to jump in the ocean and experience sailing by the power of the wind. In the afternoons, we offer dinner, drinks, and sunset excursions to turn your evening into a beautiful adventure.

Niihau boat tours

For the most adventurous Kauai and Hawaii travelers, Holo Holo Charters offers our signature Napali-Niihau Super Tour. On the Super Tour, we combine the entire Napali Coast boat tour experience with an offshore adventure, across the Kaulakahi Channel, to Lehua Crater Wildlife Sanctuary and the “Forbidden Island” of Niihau. In 1997, Holo Holo Charters was the first outfit to take guests offshore to Niihau; this tour put our company on the map. Miles Less Traveled

What Is The Best Napali Coast Boat Tour? North Shore Vs South Shore in Kauai, Hawaii

Spinner dolphins in Pacific ocean off of Kauai

The garden island of Hawaii is insanely gorgeous. Deep canyons, giant ridges left by dormant volcanoes, and, as the oldest of the islands in the Hawaii chain, the best-developed beaches. Surprisingly, it also has great food and, perhaps unsurprisingly, really fun and friendly folks who call it home.

The rugged Napali Coast in Kauai’s Northwestern corner is not easy to get to. While it can be viewed from the seat of a helicopter, the only way to actually stand on the coastline is by boat or on foot. Given our preference for boating–as showcased when we thought we were ballers and booked multiple boating trips in the Virgin Islands –there was no way I was missing out on an epic Napali Coast boat tour.

Reasons to Go:

First things first, why go on a Napali Coast Boat Tour? If the pictures–which obviously don’t do this glorious place a smidge of justice–don’t already have you psyched up, here are a few more reasons to park yourself on a boat here ASAP.

  • This small stretch of coast is unlike anywhere else in the world that I’ve been. Formed over millions of years, originally from lava flow and then sculpted by water and wind, the sharp edges of the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park are absolutely mind-blowing. The sheer, steep cliffs coming directly from the water reminded me a bit of a warmer, greener version of New Zealand’s Milford Sound .
  • Much of the ocean that lines the coast is over a sandy bottom, meaning visibility is great even 100’s of feet from shore. I peered over the raft edge at a distance where I wouldn’t dare try to swim to shore and could see the bottom as if I was standing ankle deep.
  • Recent flooding all but shut down the hiking along the Napali Coast. Some ridges are still accessible via Ko’Kee State Park, but at the moment, the trails that run the coastline are closed. They were supposed to re-open on May 1, 2019, but when I was visiting (May 1-12) there was no sign of re-opening. Fingers crossed this changes soon, but in the meantime, boat tours are the only option to visit. Get the latest info and updates on their website.
  • History! Any excuse to nerd out, am I right? Aside from the amazing geography of this place, there is also so much history. Stone terraces still mark where Hawaiians grew taro root, traditional hula and ceremonial grounds have been preserved, and people on the ground are working to restore the native plant life that has been overcome by invasives.
  • The wildlife viewing is spectacular. On two trips, I saw spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, countless sea turtles, a Hawaiin Monk seal (really rare and sadly critically endangered), a ray, and quite a few fish and sea bird species.

Two Napali Coast Boat Tours: North Shore vs. South Shore

I did two Napali Coast Boat Tours during my time in Kauai. One when I was there solo and then again when my friends came. No, it didn’t get old and yes, I would do one every day given the option. Both times I had gorgeous weather and am told the water was calm for an outing–though let me be clear that Hawaii boat captain calm might not mean the same as your calm. The two were decisions were based solely on location because I stayed 3 nights on the South shore and 4 on the North.

For both companies, I opted for the raft tour over the catamaran. While sipping cocktails at sunset would probably be an amazing experience here, we’re always going to pick the more active option. The raft tours are more engaging, you are much closer to the water and potential wildlife, and, when the weather is rougher, I’m told they are much more exciting.

Pros & Cons

Any of these could be switched to pros or cons depending on how you like to travel. For example, I personally did not care about whether the seating or boat was comfortable, but you might. I did also factor in where I was staying in Kauai when I booked both of these.

**Note I paid for both of these tours, these are completely unbiased opinions

Woman sitting on boat for tour of Napali coast

South Shore

Tour Operator: Kauai Sea Tours Tour Type: Na Pali Beach Landing Raft Adventure Location: Port Allen, South Shore, Kauai, Hawaii Cost: $175/Adult is what I paid, though their website shows $155 Time: 6.5 hrs Included: Transportation to dock (2 min. airconditioned van ride), picnic lunch and bottled water/drinks, tour on land, beach landing, sea caves tour, two guides, snorkel equipment

North Shore

Tour Operator: Holo Holo Charters Tour Type: Na Pali Snorkel Adventure Location: Hanalei, North Shore, Kauai, Hawaii Cost: $229/Adult Time: 4 hrs Included: Transportation to dock (2 min. airconditioned van ride), picnic lunch and bottled water/drinks, sea caves tour, two guides, snorkel equipment, stop at reef for snorkel

All in all, I enjoyed both companies enough to book again. The only slight edge would be to Kauai Sea Tours for their ability to park on the beach and showcase the really interesting archaeologic sites there. Also, I saw more wildlife with them, though I’m fully aware that’s probably just luck of the draw.

On the contrast, I liked that Holo Holo was right next to the Napali coast and the whole tour was done there. No time was spent getting to and from. I would probably base it on the location: if I’m staying on the South Shore, I’d go with Kauai Sea Tours, if on the North, Holo Holo.

What to Bring on Your Napali Coast Boat Tour

Note: The links below may contain affiliate links meaning purchasing an item through them will give us a small commission at no cost to you. Thanks for supporting Miles Less Traveled!

Pack light. Both tour companies give a dry bag for your essentials. Wear a bathing suit, bring warm layers, a hat, a camera, and lots of sunscreen. I applied SPF 50 both days and still burned. Here’s what was in my bag:

  • Camera – Sony a6000
  • Mini Tripod – This is the one we use currently , though it’s admittedly not very good. Would love suggestions if you know of one!
  • Sunscreen – Always use reef safe, especially when you will be snorkeling and in close contact with one. I like this one: Think Sport SPF 50
  • Chapstick with SPF – Similar to this one .
  • Waterproof fanny pack – For items you want to keep out.
  • Long Sleeve Tee – Something like this: Waterproof and UPF 50 .
  • Baseball Hat – I tend to like these Patagonia type hats style-wise , but there are definitely cheaper ones that work just as well.

Other Tips to Make the Most of Your Day

  • There is no cell service or assistance once you get on the coast.
  • In the case of bad weather or rough water, they will turn around. No refunds are given once the boat is on the water.
  • You are over an hour from medical help once on the NaPali coast. While there are first aid kits available, be sure to bring any of your own specific medications (inhalers, insulin, ect.).

"Fabulous Cruise"

Great service! Saw whales, sea turtles, bottle nose dolphins and spinner dolphins. The crew Drew, Emily and Jess were fantastic! They were very knowledgeable and we learned a lot of information about the island and the sea life. Highly recommend this cruise line!

"Beautiful Ride"

From the moment we took off our shoes it was a great ride. The guys were great and personable. Plenty to eat and drink and the group size was just great. Not too crowded. Beautiful sunset and beautiful water topped off the adventure.

"Highlight of Our Trip"

The Holo Holo snorkel/sail was a great excursion! The sailing was especially a fun experience. The crew was knowledgeable and helpful. Wasn’t a lot to see snorkeling, but it was still fun. Great activity for families. We saw monk seals, dolphins, turtles, and humpback whales from the boat.

4 Day Kauai Itinerary: All on the North Shore (including the Kalalau Trail)

The north shore of Kauai is probably the dreamiest place in the Hawaiian Islands. Lush and tropical, this is the stuff your Jurassic Park dreams are made of.

It’s less developed than the more tourist-centric south shore of Kauai and has more of a local feel giving many the impression of visiting the “real Hawaii.”

napali boat tours from north shore

If the “real Hawaii” is what you’re looking for, you’ll LOVE this 4 day itinerary focused on Kauai’s north shore.

4 Day Kauai Itinerary

The details…

This itinerary is for four full days not including travel days (so perfect for a five night trip) and assumes you’re staying on the north shore somewhere in Princeville or Hanalei (more about that in a bit).

The only bad thing you can say about the north shore of Kauai is how much it rains. It rains. A lot. That’s why it’s so tropical and beautiful. But it can make it unpredictable. If you’re doing a trip to Kauai and planning on spending most of your time on the north shore, I would probably avoid the winter months. If you go from April to October you’ll have the best chance for sunny days even if there are afternoon showers.

Where to Stay in Hanalei & Princeville

Before we get into the specifics of how to spend your days, let’s make sure you have the perfect place to stay.

1 Hotel Hanalei Bay : They say go big or go home, and, well…this is about as big as you can go in Hawaii.

Previously the St Regis (and the Princeville Resort before that), this property overlooking Hanalei Bay on Kauai’s north shore just underwent EXTENSIVE renovations before opening earlier this year as the new 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay.

I haven’t gotten to visit yet, but I’m so excited to see it in person because it looks absolutely insane. And honestly, the property has needed some help for a while.

Here’s what I can tell you…I think the property has the #1 setting of any resort in Hawaii. It’s terraced on a hill overlooking Hanalei Bay and those majestic green mountains Kauai is famous for. Honestly, it kind of makes all those other fancy beach resorts with just a plain ole ocean view a little…ho hum ; )

napali boat tours from north shore

Anyways, now that the property is up to par with the setting, I think this makes this one of the top places to stay anywhere in Hawaii. But it’s definitely a splurge.

Book your stay at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay here .

If the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is just way over budget, check out the Hanalei Colony Resort or the Hanalei Bay Resort . They’re both really lovely and a little more lowkey.

Besides these options, there aren’t a ton of hotels and resorts on the north shore. That’s part of the charm! But there are a lot of vacation rentals and condos (in Princeville) in the area. I always book with Vrbo . They’ve got the largest selection of rentals you’ll find anywhere and you can easily filter to find exactly what you’re looking for. Need a specific number of bedrooms and bathrooms? Narrowed it down to a certain location? Want flexible cancellation terms? Need to stay under a fixed budget? Click here to search for Kauai vacation rentals for your trip.

Okay, let’s get to the itinerary!

Day 1: Snorkeling & North Shore Beach Day

Start your trip off with breakfast at Wake Up Cafe, Hanalei’s best local breakfast joint. Don’t miss the macadamia nut cinnamon rolls.

Next up, spend the morning at one of the best beaches on Kauai. Also called Haena Beach Park, Tunnels is famous for its offshore surf break but it also has an amazing reef and a gorgeous white sandy beach.

napali boat tours from north shore

Tunnels is definitely the best snorkeling spot on Kauai, but it’s kind of a rugged adventure. You’ll need to bring your own snorkel gear with you (bring from home, buy, or rent from a surf shop) and there’s no lifeguards so you’ll want to be extra cautious.

Parking is also an…adventure. The beach access is pretty hidden, but it’s about a mile before you come to the parking lot for Ha’ena BeachPark (not the paid, reservations required lot, but the smaller one with the picnic tables).

There are two direct road/pathway entrances with minimal parking. There’s no parking lot and there are plenty of “no parking” signs on the street. That’s how you know you’re near. If you’re having trouble finding it, you can park at Ha’ena Beach Park and then walk down the beach about a mile to the right.

napali boat tours from north shore

Head back to Hanalei to grab lunch at Hanalei Gourmet. It’s a great local lunch and dinner spot with fresh and tasty grub in a laid back atmosphere. Sometimes they have live music. Either dine in or get it as a picnic to take to the next spot.

Find Hideaways Beach

One of the north shore’s best beaches is pretty hidden (hence the name) and requires quite an adventure to find.

napali boat tours from north shore

It’s in Princeville (make the turn into the resort area and then go about two miles through Princeville and then turn right into a tiny little parking lot just before you reach the guard shack.

napali boat tours from north shore

Just outside the parking lot, you’ll see a small pathway between the two fences. You’ll need good shoes to do this little trail (not flip flops!). There’s a pretty sketchy staircase you have to navigate before you get to the series of rope handles that will lead you to the hidden beach.

napali boat tours from north shore

Don’t miss this one!

Cap off your first day with dinner and drinks at Tahiti Nui, a Kauai institution. Order the mai tai. You’re welcome. The pizza is also pretty good too.

***Want to save major $$$ on your trip to Hawaii? I get asked ALL the time how I’m able to travel so often to Hawaii and stay at really nice resorts. Well, my favorite travel hack is cashing in points to score free airfare and free nights at some of Hawaii’s most high end resorts. Read my full guide on the exact system I use to max out credit card rewards here . Seriously, it’s going to save you soooo much money.

Day 2: Napali Coast Boat Tour

Seeing the Napali Coast is the #1 thing to do on Kauai and since you’re staying on the north shore, you’re in a prime position to see it in my favorite way.

Kauai’s Napali Coast is so isolated and rugged that it can only be seen by helicopter, by boat, or via a challenging hike (that’s coming on another day).

napali boat tours from north shore

Well my favorite way to see it is by boat…it’s way better bang for your buck than a helicopter tour.

Book a raft tour leaving out of Hanalei. The smaller ocean rafts are able to zip in and out of sea caves, plus departing from Hanalei gets you to the Napali Coast WAY quicker than leaving from the south.

FYI…boats only leave out of Hanalei in the summer (April to October) when there’s no surf. Also, it’s most just smaller ocean rafts (Zodiacs) instead of the big catamarans that leave from the south side year round (weather permitting).

napali boat tours from north shore

So, assuming you’re doing this trip during the summer season, there are several reasons I like the smaller boats that leave from the north shore over the catamarans that leave from Port Allen, but it mostly boils down to:

1) The tours that leave from Hanalei are on the Napali Coast almost IMMEDIATELY after the boat pulls out of the bay (the ones in Port Allen have to sail for almost 1.5 hours before they reach it and then another 1.5 hours to go back) so you’ve got stellar scenery you’re entire trip instead of only in the middle.

2) The smaller ocean rafts are able to zip in and out of sea caves and get up a lot closer to the island.

napali boat tours from north shore

3) There’s just a lot less people on your tour.

I will warn you though…the boat tours that leave from Hanalei are more expensive than the ones from Port Allen (there are fewer companies with permits and they have a shorter season) and it’s a much more adventurous and immersive experience than the catamaran cruises.

Also, a lot of these tours are advertised as “snorkel cruises” or “snorkel adventures,” but don’t go in expecting too much. These are definitely boat tours of the Napali Coast to revel in the scenery of one of the most magnificent parts of Hawaii with a (sub par) snorkeling spot thrown in.

napali boat tours from north shore

It’s not terrible, but I’ve done a few different tours that stop at different spots and it has never been anything to write home about. You’re going to see the scenery and enjoy being out on the water.

If you’re prone to motion sickness, definitely take your meds before you get out onto the water! Generally speaking, those who are prone to seasickness might feel it more on a smaller boat than a larger boat.

Some tour companies provide dry bags for you to use (ask ahead of time). I recommend getting a waterproof case for your phone or camera though so you can keep it out, and bring along a towel or dry clothes for the ride back. It gets pretty windy and it’s nice having a long sleeve shirt to put on.

napali boat tours from north shore

You should be back in Hanalei around noon which leaves the whole afternoon to hang out at the beach or your resort.

Try Wishing Well Shave Ice or Aloha Juice Bar for a cold treat.

Day 3: Hike the Kalalau Trail

You’ve got to do at least one hike on Kauai (it’s arguably the best Hawaiian island for hiking) and this is the one to do.

**But before that start your morning off at Hanalei Bread Company. This yummy coffee shop has the best homemade breads, bagels, and pastries. They also have some breakfast options and sandwiches.

The full Kalalau Trail stretches 11 miles along the Napali Coast from Ke’e Beach to Kalalau Beach. To go all the way to Kalalau, you’ll need a permit to camp overnight in the valley since it’s impossible to do the full hike on a day trip (22 miles round trip). If you’re up for doing the full hike and camp, plan it way far in advance as permits are hard to come by.

napali boat tours from north shore

If you didn’t come quite so prepared for a 22-mile hike and the thought of it makes you want to reach for the nearest bag of donuts, don’t worry-you can still catch those ah-mazing views!

The first two miles of the Kalalau Trail are open to day hikers. Don’t be scared off by harrowing tales of overnight hikers who had to cross 18” ledges with a sheer drop off into the ocean below…the first two miles of Kalalau, while strenuous, are very doable.

Most day hikers will hike to Hanakapiai Beach (2 miles in) but don’t forget you’ve got to turn around and go back the way you came so it’s really 4 miles.

If that’s not doable, you’ll come to the first lookout down the Napali Coast about half a mile into the hike making for a challenging, but very doable one mile hike.

napali boat tours from north shore

Unless you have a physical limitation (knee problems, etc.), I strongly strongly strongly recommend powering through and doing the four mile round trip hike to Hanakapiai Beach and back.

I’ve hiked this stretch a few times now and I won’t lie…time always fades the pain for me haha. After a few days I’m usually left remembering the epic views and adventure of it all and minimizing how hard it actually was.

Well this last time I hiked it, I vowed I would remember exactly what it felt like when I was on  the hike. I’m not going to lie…it’s TOUGH. But a doable tough.

There is a lot of elevation gain coming both ways and the trail is mostly rocky and uneven.

But you will pass ALL KINDS of people doing this hike. Locals who sprint through it barefoot, pro hikers with all the gear, parents trying to keep up with their kids, and older folks who are determined and willing to go slow to take part. I’ve personally hiked it with multiple “active seniors” who powered through just fine (although maybe they didn’t feel like it at the time ; )

napali boat tours from north shore

Right before you reach Hanakapiai Beach, there’s a pretty big stream you’ll have to cross. It always makes me nervous hopping across slippery rocks, so I like to wear shoes where I can just wade through the water.

Plan some time to sit and take a rest at the beach, but admire the water from a distance. This is NOT a swimming beach and almost 100 people have lost their lives here. The waves are rough, the currents are strong, and a rogue wave can come out of nowhere so stay away from the water!! Even when it looks calm.

From the beach it’s about a mile up the valley to Hanakapiai Falls (this is an offshoot of the Kalalau Trail, not a continuation). I’ve read that the trail can be tricky to stick to and is pretty strenuous. I haven’t done that bit yet, and honestly I don’t know if I ever will. But if you want to extend the hike to 6 miles to see the waterfall, more power to you!

The first ½ mile or so of the return was probably the toughest for me. It’s a pretty quick ascent back up from the beach and I was huffing and puffing! It’s hotter in the day and psychologically, it’s just less exciting when you know you’re just retracing your steps.

napali boat tours from north shore

Read this post for ALL the details on hiking the Kalalau Trail including how to get reservations (which you now NEED).

For dinner, you’ve earned something really special. Head to the Dolphin for fresh fish and some of the island’s best sushi. Their teriyaki ahi is one of my favorite dinners on the island!

Side Note: If you’re looking for a rental car for your trip, I LOVE Discount Hawaii Car Rentals . They’re seriously the only company I ever use. They’ll give you the very best prices, you don’t have to reserve with a credit card or pay until you show up, you can cancel and re-book anytime if you find a better rate, and they usually have a special that adds additional drivers for no fee. It’s a no brainer. Click here to check rates for your trip!

Day 4: Beach Day & Sunset Golf Course Tour

Start your last full day on the island off with coffee and breakfast at Kilauea Bakery.

You’ve got two options for morning (or you can do both!):

Anini Beach

If you want to take it easy, spend the morning at Anini Beach. This is probably the best overall beach on the north shore, especially for families. It’s very accessible (plenty of parking and good facilities) and the large reef leaves the wide beach pretty protected for swimming, even when there’s large waves on the north shore.

napali boat tours from north shore

Queen’s Bath

If you’re up for a little hike, you might want to check out Queen’s Bath.

If you’ve done much research about top things to do in Kauai, you’ve likely heard of Queen’s Bath. It’s a sinkhole in the lava along the coast in the Princeville area that creates a natural swimming pool during calm ocean days.

Unfortunately, during high surf times (which can be unpredictable), it can be extremely dangerous. Numerous deaths have occurred here, however it doesn’t stop people from attempting it.

I can’t recommend swimming in the pool under any conditions, BUT if you’d like to see it, the hike down to the pools is very pretty. In the Princeville resort area, there’s a small parking lot on Punahele Road. If there’s no parking available, you can pay to park at the golf course up the road. It’s a short (but often muddy and slippery) hike down where you’ll even pass a waterfall.

I’d stay well away from the pools as even in calm weather, rogue waves can come out of nowhere. When I’m entering any area near the ocean, I like to hang back and watch the conditions for 15-20 minutes before deciding what a safe distance is.

During high surf advisories, the trailhead will often be gated. Of course, many people will climb around the gates, but know that if you choose to do so you’re officially breaking the law and may be subject to fines .

Princeville Makai Golf Club Sunset Cart Tour

This tour just popped up on my radar a few weeks ago and now it’s top of my list next time I’m on Kauai. I love a good tour, and this one sounds so unique!

Start off at the Makai Grill for drinks before hopping on a golf cart to cruise around the Princeville Makai course, regularly named one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. The tour is limited to 12 carts per night so you’ll get plenty of time with your guide as you learn about local culture, flora and fauna, and see some of the course’s most beautiful holes.

The grand finale is a stop at the course’s legendary 7th hole, which offers one of the best sunset views on the island.

If you love a unique sunset experience, this is for you. If you love a good guided tour, double whammy. And if you’re also into golf, it’s a no brainer! Can’t wait to do this on my next trip.

Book your tour here .

Make reservations for dinner at Bar Acuda in Hanalei. This tapas restaurant is a favorite spot on the north shore and serves up both traditional small plates and unique combinations inspired by the island.

Maui vs Kauai

Here’s one more really important thing you need to know before your Hawaii trip…

Reservations You Need to Make BEFORE Your Hawaii Trip

You’ve got your airfare, hotel, rental car and your big activities booked, so you should be good to go, right? Wrong!

Travel is BOOMING in Hawaii so a lot of state and national parks used the closure and reopening to institute reservation systems at some of the island’s most popular spots to make things a little more sustainable.

That means that there are now over half a dozen sites (beaches, trailheads, etc.) that require advance reservations. And some sell out well before you arrive on the island so you really need to have some sort of a plan.

I recently saw somebody in a Hawaii travel group post in a panic that they didn’t know they had to make reservations for things in advance…they thought they could just show up and “go with the flow.” I was tempted to say, well, “as long as the flow doesn’t take you somewhere that requires reservations, you can!” ; )

But I don’t want YOU to be that person, so I’ve pulled together a list of all the places you need to reserve entry in advance (plus all the details on booking windows, price, links, etc.) and a handful of popular tourist hotspots that book out really far in advance too.

Haleakala National Park (Maui)

To visit Haleakala National Park for sunrise at the summit, you must make reservations in advance here .

Reservations are required to enter the park gates between 3AM and 7AM (sunrise hours).

Online reservations are $1 per reservation/vehicle PLUS you’ll pay the park entrance fee of $30/vehicle when you arrive (National Park annual passes are also accepted at the gate).

The reservation booking window opens 60 days in advance at 7AM HST. There are also a limited number of tickets released two days before.

You can make one reservation every three days with the same account. So if you want to make reservations for back to back days (in case of weather/conditions), you’ll need to do so with separate accounts (email addresses).

If you can’t get reservations for sunrise, you can enter the park anytime after 7AM without reservations. The summit is spectacular during the day and you don’t need reservations for sunset.

I strongly recommend creating an account before and making sure you’re logged in at 7AM HST because it’s not uncommon for reservations to sell out quickly.

Waianapanapa State Park (Maui)

To visit Maui’s famous black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park on the Road to Hana, you must make reservations in advance here .

Reservations are required to visit the beach and are distributed in windows from 7AM-10AM, 10AM-12:30PM, 12:30PM-3PM, and 3PM-6PM. And they are pretty strict about exiting by the end of your window time (you can arrive anytime within your window).

It’s $5/person to enter plus $10/vehicle to park and those fees are paid when you book your time slot.

Reservations open up 30 days in advance.

Iao Valley State Park (Maui)

To visit the lush, green mountains and hike at Iao Valley State Park, you must make reservations in advance here .

Reservations are offered for 90 minute time slots beginning at 7AM and ending at 6PM. They ask that you arrive within the first 30 minutes of your time slot.

Entry is $5/person plus $10/vehicle to park.

Diamond Head (Oahu)

To hike to the top of Waikiki’s famous Diamond Head, you must make reservations in advance here .

Reservations are offered in two hour increments beginning at 6AM (6AM-8AM, 8AM-10AM, etc.) and ending at 6PM. If you’re parking onsite, they ask that you arrive within the first 30 minutes of your reservation window.

Tip: I recommend booking one of the first two time slots because there isn’t much shade on this hike and it gets pretty hot.

Hanauma Bay (Oahu)

To snorkel at Oahu’s pristine Hanauma Bay, you must make reservations in advance here .

Entry times are staggered in 10 minute increments from 7AM to 1:20PM with roughly 1000 slots being assigned in advance every day.

Reservations can be made two days in advance and they open at 7AM HST. They’re usually gone in minutes (if not seconds).

If you’re unable to get an advanced reservation, you can try for a day of, walk in ticket. They open at 6:45AM and they only have a limited number available. Everyone in your group needs to be present when you purchase your tickets in person.

There are no reservations for parking and it’s first come, first serve. $3/vehicle.

It’s $25/person to snorkel at Hanauma Bay (12 and under, active military, and locals with HI ID are free).

The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is open Wednesday through Sunday (CLOSED MONDAY AND TUESDAY) from 6:45AM-4PM. Last entry is at 1:30PM, the beach is cleared at 3:15PM and you have to leave the facility by 4PM.

Jellyfish patterns can also affect whether or not the bay is open so double check the day before/day of.

USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor (Oahu)

If you want to take the boat tour at Pearl Harbor out to the USS Arizona, it’s recommended to make advance reservations here .

Online reservations are guaranteed a specific boarding time to go out to the USS Arizona. If you’re unable to get an advance reservation, you can wait standby when you arrive. The line could be short (15 minutes or so) or long (hours) and it just depends on the day (if they’re having problems with the loading dock sometimes they don’t take many from the standby line) and the time of day.

Reservations are supposed to open up 60 days in advance, but keep an eye on your exact dates, because lately they’ve actually been opening up about 57ish days in advance???

They also release a small batch of tickets the day before.

The boat ride out to the USS Arizona is free, but it’s $1 to make the reservations online.

They recently started charging $7/vehicle for parking at Pearl Harbor.

Haena State Park / Kalalau Trail (Kauai)

If you want to hike Kauai’s famous Kalalau Trail, you must make advance reservations here .

You’ve got three options here:

1) Parking & Entry: This is the most flexible option and also the most limited. THESE RESERVATIONS SELL OUT IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. There are three time slots available: 6:30AM-12:30PM, 12:30PM-5:30PM and 4:30PM to sunset. You can purchase multiple time slots if you want to stay longer. It’s $10/timeslot (parking) plus $5/person and you have to reserve every person when you initially book. Everybody has to arrive in the same car and your ID needs to match the reservation.

2) Shuttle & Entry: If you can’t get parking at the trailhead, there’s also a shuttle option. Shuttle reservations are $35/person (16+), $25/person (ages 4-15), 3 and under can ride free. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes 6:20AM to 6:40PM.

3) Entry Only: If you’re a Hawaiian resident (with HI ID) or someone WITH a Hawaiian resident, you can purchase entry only for $5/person with no advance reservations. Also, if you’re walking or biking to the trailhead you can do this option. But there is NOWHERE to park in the area to walk in. So this really only works for those with bikes or who are staying close enough to walk. They will tow your car if you park outside the designated areas.

The reservation window opens 30 days in advance at 12AM HST. The parking & entry option usually sells out in a minute, but the shuttle availability will last longer.

There are a TON of FAQs here including the possibility of snagging a canceled reservation.

Other Things to Book in Advance

Hawaii is a busy place these days! Besides the state and national parks above, here’s a handful of miscellaneous things you should make reservations for in advance (if they’re on your radar):

Mama’s Fish House (Maui) : The iconic spot is the most popular restaurant in Hawaii and dinner reservations usually start filling up about 6 months in advance (they open up bookings 18 months in advance). Make reservations through their website and if the dates you want are already booked, you can join a waitlist.  Most people have pretty good success getting in on the waitlist (even if it’s for lunch).

Old Lahaina Luau (Maui) : Honestly, any luau you’re planning to attend you should book early, but most people are usually shocked how far out the Old Lahaina Luau books out. Book it as soon as you know your dates (I think they open at the six month window). They also have a waitlist.

Kualoa Ranch UTV Tour (Oahu) : Everybody loves Jurassic Park so getting to ride UTVs where they filmed the movies is very popular. The ranch offers a lot of different tours but the UTV tours usually book out a couple of months in advance.

Spa Reservations : If you’re staying at a resort with a spa (or planning on visiting one), don’t wait until you arrive to make your reservations. I’d make them at least a month in advance.

Tee Times : Same for golf, reserve your tee times well in advance.

Dining Reservations : Any “fancy” or resort restaurant is likely to be booked up these days so if you like having a nice dinner every night, make your plans in advance.

napali boat tours from north shore

Kauai offers the oldest and most protected reef ecosystems of all the major Hawaiian Islands. Hundreds of species of fish can be found in these delicate "rain forests of the sea," one-third of which are found nowhere else in the world. Weather permitting, our Captains will take you down Na Pali Coast which offers some of the best snorkeling on the island and is accessible only by boat. Schools of vibrantly colored tropical fish mingle with the ancient Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle) that graze on the limu (algae) growing on the coral reefs of these waters.

All Capt Andy's Kauai Snorkel Tours Include

  • Expert snorkel instructions for all levels including beginners.
  • Trained crew of professionals certified in CPR.
  • High quality, well maintained, snorkel gear.
  • Lunch and drinks

Beginning Snorkelers

Are you a 1st time snorkeler? Capt. Andy's is famous for our friendly and safe instructions. Snorkeling is not complicated. We'll have you exploring Kauai's tropical reefs in no time.

For those less confident swimmers, we provide snorkel vests which assist with floatation.

Snorkel Gear

Capt Andy's carries only the finest and most comfortable snorkel gear for your underwater adventures.

  • Soft silicone masks (corrective lenses too!)
  • "Dry" easy purge snorkels.
  • Comfortable fins in all sizes.
  • Snorkel vests - for buoyancy.
  • Non-fog spray

Kauai Snorkel Tips

Always use property fitting snorkel gear.

Proper fitting gear is one of the most important factors for an enjoyable snorkeling experience. One leaky mask or sore feet from tight fins can be frustrating. Our knowledgeable crew is here to help. We will fit you with proper size gear to ensure comfort and safety.

Use a Mask with Corrective Lenses

What good is snorkeling if you can't see the fish? Our soft silicone masks with corrective lenses are a perfect fit for people who wear glasses.

Safety First

If you are snorkeling without a tour, always check current ocean conditions before going out. Be informed of these important ocean safety tips:

  • When in doubt, don’t go out.
  • Always snorkel with a buddy.
  • Use a point of reference on shore and check periodically to make sure you have not drifted too far.
  • For beginners, going with an experienced snorkerler is recommended.

Who Can Snorkel?

Just about anyone can snorkel, as technique is more important than your fitness level. The fundamentals are easy to learn. Basic swimming skills are required, but snorkel vests can be used to assist in floatation. Depending on how adventurous you are, different levels of physical ability are required. If you have any doubts, consult your physician regarding any conditions that might be limiting for this activity.

What Do I Need To Bring?

Are there safety concerns.

If you are snorkeling with Capt. Andy's our Captains will ensure you snorkel in safe conditions, and trained professionals certified in CPR are onboard our boats.

We're spending four nights on the north shore at the end of May. Was wondering what everyone recommends, for food and activities? We like practically any cuisine and would like to do a nice oceanview dinner one night. We also like to snorkel and nature. Beach recs?

Thanks in advance!

Weather should be great in late May!

I also would second the Napali boat trip from north shore - incredible!

Mini golf in Kilauea (also a botanical garden) and the Kilauea wildlife refuge and lighthouse, though check days and hours they are open.

Restaurants - we love Hanalei Dolphin …full dinners as well as their sushi - yum! Also like Kalypso, Hanalei gourmet, Also a great bakery in Kilauea! :)

Thanks so much for the recs so far! These all look great.

We have reservations for Haena, and have done the Napali Coast tour once from Port Allen. It was pretty special -- saw over 100+ whales, and the napali coast was an added bonus.
