History of Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

The history of Sanjay Gandhi National Park dates back to 4th Century BCE when ancient civilizations of Sopara and Kalyan had a 45-kilometre trade route between each other and kingdoms of these trade capitals exchanged trades with Greece and Mesopotamia.

The trade route between Sopara and Kalyan passed through Kanheri Caves which was a site of learning as well as pilgrimage for Buddhists. The caves were sculpted out of one single basalt rock by Buddhist monks between 9th and 1st Century BCE.

What was earlier known as Krishnagiri National Park during the pre- independence era (1942), was later known as Borivali National Park in 1974 and was spread across an area of 20.26 square kilometres only. This was done in 1942 under the Bombay National Park Act.

However, later on the park area was expanded twice. Once in 1976 and later again in 1981. During the expansion of 1981, the area that came under the National Park measured 82.25 Square kilometre.

The park was named as Sanjay Gandhi National Park, after the elder son of ex- Prime Minister of India, Ms. Indira Gandhi in 1996 and the park area was further expanded to 103 square kilometres simultaneously.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park – History, Timing, Entry Fees

Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai   is nothing more than a stunning natural wonderland covering a sizable size of 87 km. This park was opened in the year 1996 and welcomes more than two million visitors each year. The park was formerly known as Borivali National Park before Sanjay Gandhi, the ex-prime minister of India, passed away tragically.

One of the most popular national parks in Asia is, without a doubt, the  National Park Sanjay Gandhi , which is bursting with amazing flora and fauna. This national park is essentially a gold mine for suburbs.

This location has a long, rich history that dates to the fourth century BCE. The Kanheri Caves , which were dug into the rock over 2,000 years ago, continue to be this area’s top attraction despite the numerous amazing sites that visitors can experience.

History of Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Sanjay Gandhi National Park’s origins may be traced to the fourth century BCE when the ancient civilisations of Kalyan and Sopara had a 45-kilometre trade route between them and their respective kingdoms, which traded with Greece and Mesopotamia.

The Kanheri Caves, a Buddhist pilgrimage and study centre, were on the commerce route connecting Sopara and Kalyan. Between the ninth and first centuries BCE, Buddhist monks carved the caverns out of a single piece of basalt rock.

Borivali National Park, which was only 20.26 square kilometres in size, replaced the older name of Krishnagiri National Park during the pre-independence era (1942). Following the Bombay National Park Act, this was done in 1942.

However, the park’s area was twice enlarged in the future. Twice, first in 1976 and once more in 1981. The area that became a part of the National Park in 1981 was 82.25 square kilometres.

In 1996, the park was renamed Sanjay Gandhi National Park in honour of the senior son of former Indian Prime Minister Ms. Indira Gandhi, and its size was simultaneously increased to 103 square kilometres.

The Architecture of Kanheri Caves

The Kanheri Caves feature viharas, stupas, prayer halls, and other structures of old-style Buddhist architecture. These caves’ carving out of a single bedrock is their most distinctive feature.

Kanheri Caves

The caves’ construction is relatively straightforward, but they are expertly planned with functional elements like stone platforms for sleeping, channels to collect and store rainwater, lofty pillars, walkways, and other things.

The several caverns here each have their unique features, such as Cave 1’s incomplete chaitya griha and Cave 2’s three stupas and carved Buddha statues. A stupa, lofty pillars, and a sizable statue of Lord Buddha may be found near the entrance to Cave 3.

The caverns also include several Devanagari and Brahmi inscriptions, the majority of which are still unrevealed.

Places to visit near Sanjay Gandhi National Park

  • Kanheri Caves

The tallest mountain in Mumbai, known as the Kanheri caves, is located deep inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and is made up of old Buddhist caves. The Archaeological Survey of India looks after it. Particularly on weekends, both domestic and foreign tourists frequently visit the caves.

The largest lake in Mumbai is called Vihar Lake. It is situated inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park close to the Mithi River’s Vihar settlement. To help the residents of southern Bombay with their drinking water problems, the British administration constructed the lake between 1856 and 1860. The Powai-Kanheri hill ranges in the catchment area provide it with water.

A freshwater lake in northern Mumbai is called Tulsi Lake. It is reportedly Mumbai’s second-largest lake and provides some of the city’s potable water. The other two lakes on Salsette Island are Powai Lake and Vihar Lake, and this one is one of them.

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park’s (SGNP) Tulsi Lake is frequently the first to overflow.

  • Chota Kashmir

Amid the concrete and steel high rises and remote from all the hustle and bustle of Bombay, lies the small green strip of Aarey Colony that contains a parkland called ‘Chhota Kashmir’. The lake and Chhota Kashmir Garden are on opposing sides of the street. The lake has been the setting for countless Bollywood song filming and provides boating opportunities.

There is a lot more to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park than one might think. In addition to the element of adventure, one can also find calm in the dense forest cover. It is nothing short of a blessing to hear the wind blow and the birds chirp.

But given the state of the world today, it might be difficult to maintain a positive connection to nature. During a vacation to Mumbai, one should undoubtedly visit this park, which will let them reaffirm their connection to their heritage.

Travel Diary: Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Photo of Bhavish Shah

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park or Borivali Park whatever you want to call, it is one of the most beautiful wildlife sanctuaries in the world. All because it is spread across over 104 sq. km. and also, because it is the only park in the world located completely within city limits, which is also rich in biodiversity.

THE KANHERI CAVES

Kanheri, derived from 'Krishnagiri' meaning 'black mountain', was once a prominent Buddhist settlement and the caves were originally viharas, serving as the living, studying and meditating quarters of the Buddhists. Many of the caves are lined with Buddhist inscriptions, giant statues with elaborately carved features and paintings that appear unfinished in some caves. According to the government website, Kanheri has the largest number of rock-cut cave monuments in a single hill.

The main caves to watch are the first three caves and then the cave number 10, 41, 67, 89 and 90. Also, there is painting in cave number 41. Cave number 3 is the most magnificent cave of the whole complex; it’s a huge chaitya hall, which has a large stupa in it surrounded by pillars which have carvings of figures of elephant and lions at the top.The chaitya hall is the replication of the Bhaja and Karla caves. The outside of the cave is also having two big statues of Buddha which are about 7 meters in height. There is an inscription in Brahmi script at the entrance of the cave. Brahmi is the ancient script which preceded the Devnagari script.

It was exhausting after a point to try and acquaint myself with every one of those 109 caves; so I skipped a few here and there. But my favourite clusters of caves were the ones beyond immediate reach, flanked by wilderness, fewer crowds and steep short-cuts in case you had little time to spare. Apart from the magnificent prayer hall, these caves also provide the highest vantage point for a commanding view of the entire forest area.

The undulating green lands of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park are just the kind of surroundings to which one would love to retreat for some moments of quiet introspection or meditation. The great panoramic views of hills, valleys, lakes and open expanses can actually have a soothing effect on the mind, body and soul. There are two lakes Tulsi and Vihar Lake that provide water to Mumbai city.

I'd say, to fully appreciate the park; you’ll need to pack a picnic lunch and spend a full day there. If you plan a trip here, come as early as you can and be prepared to fork out a hefty fee for bringing vehicles inside. Other attractions include a toy train that passes through the deer park, a Jain temple and various walking trails. Also, enquire about camping facilities if you fancy spending the night in the park.

Quick facts:

  • Park timings: 7 am to 6:30 pm (Those who overstay inside the park after 6:30 are fined Rs. 100/person)

  • Kanheri Caves: A shuttle bus runs roughly every 20 minutes to the caves from the entrance of the park. The bus charges Rs. 44/person one way and Rs. 88 for a return journey. But their schedules, at times, can be unpredictable. However, there are private vans available, and they ferry you to the caves for the same fare. The last shuttle bus for the caves leaves at 1:30 pm and the last bus from the caves to the park entrance leaves at 4 pm.
  • Boating: Boating timings are between 9 am to 12:30 pm & 1:30 pm to 5 pm. A paddle boat for two and a boat for 4 is available for 15 minutes.

  • Vanrani (Toy train): The train runs at regular intervals. Although there is a train timetable at the display, I didn’t see anybody following that. Cost: Adults – Rs. 31 and Children – Rs. 12.
  • Note: Please carry your lunch as you will not find any food stalls inside the park’s premises. Drinking water is available near the children parks.

During the British colonial rule in India, the two main sources of drinking water for Mumbai, Tulsi & Vihar lakes, were built within what was known as ‘Krishnagiri National Park’. This area was quickly designated as a protected forest.

Only 5 years prior to gaining Independence, BMC assumed control of Aarey Jungle along with the 2 catchment areas of the lakes, designating the entire area as a protected forest zone. This vast and diverse park is now known as ‘Sanjay Gandhi National Park’, stretching from Borivali to Goregaon and Thane on the opposite side.

Kanheri Caves

Inside National Park

The old caves of Kanheri, located at the highest peak of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, are just a 16-minute bus or car ride away from the main gate. These caves are one of the park’s top attractions and a great example of archeology, showcasing the Basalt Rock cut black mountain in Mumbai. The name Kanheri is derived from its original Sanskrit word, ‘Krishnagiri’, which was the park’s old name.

Gautam Buddha and his followers resided in this place for an extended period. The Buddha Stupa at Nalasopara and the National Park are two crucial sites where Buddha stayed in Mumbai.

The unearthing of 7 additional ancient caves in the Kanheri region in February 2015 was a momentous achievement for the Archaeological department. Collaborating with a group of enthusiastic students from Sathaye College in Mumbai, who are dedicated to studying and researching the rich ancient cultures of India, the team embarked on an extraordinary journey.

Amidst the dense wilderness, filled with prickly cacti and entangled creepers, they stumbled upon a breathtaking waterfall nestled behind the renowned Kanheri caves. After overcoming numerous obstacles, they discovered five remarkable caves situated at the pinnacle of this majestic waterfall. To their astonishment, a stone ladder led them further down to unveil two hidden caves.

These seven concealed caves served as Viharas, or dwelling quarters, for Buddhist Monks during ancient times. One of the caves even boasted the presence of a Harmika, a sacred architectural element.

Due to their remote location within the depths of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park Forest, special buses have been arranged for visitors. The cost of these buses is Rs. 64 for adults and Rs. 34 for children aged between 5 to 12 years old.

Bambusteum – The Bamboo Garden

Hidden within the sprawling expanse of this National park lies a truly remarkable sight – ‘Bambusteum’, a one-of-a-kind garden spanning 2.5 acres (3 Hectares) dedicated solely to the majestic Bamboo. With an impressive collection of 97 distinct species of Bamboo trees, ‘Bambusteum’ stands as the sole garden of its kind in Mumbai. Don’t let this extraordinary gem slip through your fingers when exploring the wonders of this National park.

Table of Contents

The History of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Its history is long and goes back to the 4th Century BC. Two ports traded with ancient civilizations like Greece and Mesopotamia were Sopoara (in ancient India) and Kalyan (in modern India).

This forest was part of the 45 km land route that connected these ports. The Kanheri Caves were an important Buddhist learning center and pilgrimage site in the middle of the park.

Buddhist monks carved them between the 9th and the 1st centuries BCE. They were formed from a huge basaltic rock outcropping.

In the pre-independence period, the park was called ‘Krishnagiri National Park. The park’s area was just 20.26 square miles at that time.

The park was increased to its current size in 1969 by acquiring various reserve forest properties adjacent to it.

The area was administered by a separate unit of the Forest Department, the ‘Borivali National Park Subdivision.’ In 1974, Krishnagiri National Park was established. Later, it was renamed “Borivali National Park.”  It was renamed ‘Sanjay Gandhi National Park in 1981 to honor Sanjay Gandhi (son of ex-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi).

Flora and Fauna

Forest habitat is the dominant habitat type. An estimated 1300 flowering plants are found in SGNP. The majority of this forest is a southern mixed-deciduous forest. The Tectona and Terminalia dominate it. This is especially evident in the lowlands and on the hillsides.

A few pleasant surprises in the National Park include small herds of Sambhars, darting Barking Deer, and a surprise encounter with a Black-naped Hare.

However, nothing can match the feeling of fear, terror, and goose-pimply when confronted with a large Leopard. This encounter is possible because of the high density of Leopards in this wilderness.

It’s possible to see a rare Porcupine or a Palm Civet, both rarely seen these days, and even encounter a Striped Hyena. This makes it memorable. Only a few people can see the rare Four-horned Antelope or the shy Mouse Deer.

The monkey species include the Bonnet Macaque (an introduced species), the Rhesus Macaque (an introduced species), and the vegetarian Hanuman langur, or leaf monkey. The park’s largest of 17 bat species is the Indian flying fox.

The National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers. The National Park is home to many bird species, including the small Tickell’s flowerpecker (an Indian bird) and Sunbirds (an old-world equivalent of the hummingbirds).

Reptiles and Butterflies

This forest contains beautiful birds, including the Paradise Flycatcher and the mysterious Trogon.

Crocodiles at Tulsi Lake, Monitor Lizards, and Pythons are examples of the reptile world. The park also has smaller reptiles that add to its wonder.

Naturalists will enjoy the invertebrate world, including spiders and crabs, signature spiders, black wood spiders, and giant wood spiders with their huge webs in monsoon.

Many Mantis, Silk cotton bugs, and Beetles exist in the insect world. There are many beautiful butterflies to be found in the Butterfly World.

Things to Do in Borivali National Park

1. mini train.

Van Rani

Van Rani is a Mini train that operates in Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The name is derived from Hindi, with ‘Van’ meaning Jungle and ‘Rani’ meaning Queen.

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park has many attractions, i.e., Jungle, Park, Caves, Zoo, Mini Train, River, etc.

One of the famous attractions for children is the Van Rani mini-train which has around 20 to 25 seats. It is a hit among children.

This mini train is an exciting experience for children who get excited to see the toy-like train, which would take them on a Jungle Safari Ride. This ride lasts for around 20 min.

The Van Rani takes tourists around Borivali National Park on a narrow-gauge train track. It covers around 2.4 km and moves inside the jungle, giving you a view of the trees, animals, waterfalls, and birds, and you will enjoy the greenery all around you. Not just children but even adults enjoy this experience.

The train operates every 30 min and covers two major attractions. The Van Rani is open from all sides with a roof on the top; this helps you get a closer experience with nature.

2. Tiger and Lion Safari

You can make your visit memorable by watching the big cats at the Tiger and Lion Safari inside a vehicle. These large safari cages allow visitors to view these big cats in a controlled environment and an open car. The wildlife interpretation center at the ticket counter allows us to understand wild animals and their natural habitats better.

Deer in Sanjay Gandhi National Park

The artificial water lake is very close to the main entrance gate. This allows you to use the pedal boat and paddle on the picturesque, refreshing lake created for this purpose. You can book a boat ride in the beautiful lake and enjoy the synergy with nature.

This memorial is dedicated to the ‘Father Of The Nation.’ You can walk or drive up here to enjoy beautiful views that contrast the city and forest.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park | Should You Visit and Insider Tips to Make it Count

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is one of the places locals keep planning to go to but never land up going. I know because I was one of them. The park is known to be the green lungs of Mumbai and the only large pocket of green, comparable to Central Park in New York or Hyde Park in London . But is it worth going there for a local or visitor? And what are the activities to do inside? Is there an easy way to see the famous Kanheri Caves inside which does not involve braving the crowds? YES, to all of them. Read on to see how to plan the perfect day trip to Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri Caves.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Borivali National Park, also known as Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), is located in Borivali, North Mumbai, and spans 104 square kilometres. Established in 1969, it’s a protected area within the city’s limits, which was built as a catchment area to preserve the lakes that are a part of the park— Tulsi and Vihar. Tulsi Lake and Vihar Lakes meet the water needs of the city’s population. The park houses a variety of flora and fauna, including 274 bird species and 40 mammal species. It’s famous for the Kanheri Caves, an ancient Buddhist site with rock-cut caves. The park also offers several treks and trails, and other recreational opportunities. Additionally, it serves as a critical green space, aiding in the conservation of biodiversity amidst the urban environment. The park is also well-known for its 50 sneaky leopards that only come out after the people are gone.

Timings and Costs

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is closed on Mondays . On the rest of the days, it is open from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM for morning walkers with monthly or annual passes. For day visitors, it is open from 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

The entry fee to visit Sanjay Gandhi National Park is INR 85 for adults and INR 45 for children. There is a bus service that operates between Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri Caves. Bus timings | Morning – 9.00 am to 12.30 pm | Afternoon – 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm. The tickets for activities inside the national park like the Toy Train Ride, Boating and Safari can be booked only through the official website of the park. All online tickets booked should be verified at the ticket counter.

Should You Visit?

Depends on who you are and what you want to do, really.

If you are a local who is looking to do an offbeat weekend activity and get some exercise , there’s plenty to choose from. The park offers morning treks and cycling routes. The treks are of easy to medium difficulty, inexpensive (between INR 400-1000) and can be done by whole families. There are safari and toy train rides—although neither looked very appealing to me. Overall, it’s a good place for a picnic and recreation.

However, on weekends, SGNP gets very crowded. Buses, cars, and bikes ply from the main gate to the caves and as they try to skirt the throngs of walkers (in thousands), they honk. A lot of trash also gets collected because of the crowds. There are zillions of cyclists, too. So, not the peaceful oasis you might be looking for. Weekday mornings are better to enjoy the park’s greenery, get some respite from the humdrum of life, and sneak a visit to the Kanheri Caves. It’s also a good workout.

If you are a visitor to Mumbai and only have a limited time in Mumbai , just visit the Kanheri Caves. Take a tour to trek up early in the morning with a guide , and see Kanheri Caves. However, this is a half-day exercise and can be skipped in favour of other exciting things to do in Mumbai .

Sanjay Gandhi National Park | Plan the Perfect Day Trip

Kanheri Caves

Built in the 1st century CE, Kanheri is a collection of 109 caves spread over half a kilometre located in Mumbai’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The name Kanheri, also known as Krishnagiri or Kanhagiri in ancient text, translates to mean “black mountain” (Krishna means “black” and Giri means “mountain”) and is named after a black basaltic stone. The caves have: (1) A chaitya , that comprises a sanctum, verandah and outer courtyard approached through a flight of steps with flanking water cisterns on either side, and (2) viharas , that are architecturally monotypic but variable with one or multiple cells, a verandah with two or more pillars in front, and an open courtyard with rock-cut benches along the walls. The cave numbers 3, 11, 34, 41, 67, 87 and 90 are most important. An excellent example of the only sculpture in India of the eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara excavated outside cave number 41. There are over 100 inscriptions in the caves revealing the names of donors and patrons of the caves which show monks. goldsmiths, traders and many political and administrative officials had given donations to caves, cisterns, tanks, staircases, benches, niches, pillars, paths and walls at Kanheri.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park | Is it Worth it and Insider Tips | Day Trip Plan | Kanheri Caves panorama

Wonder why it’s not a UNESCO World Heritage site yet. It’s a pretty cool place.

Open every day from 9 AM – 5 PM . The entry fee is INR 25 for Indians and INR 300 for foreigners. Free admission to visitors below 15 years. Remember, in addition, you’d need to have paid the entry fee for SGNP and the bus fee to get to the caves. Video filming costs INR 25.

Buses ply from the main gate of Sanjay Gandhi National Park to the caves which take 15 min (6 km) and cost INR 13. Bus timings | Morning – 9.00 am to 12.30 pm | Afternoon – 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm. You can also cycle close (park a 10-minute uphill walk away) to the caves. (INR 80 for 2 hours)

The Best Way to Visit

One of the best ways to see Kanheri Caves is by going on a trek organised by The Sanjay Gandhi National Park , starting from the caves. The treks commence at 7 AM, which is before the park officially opens at 7:30 AM. If you are part of the trek, you will receive an early entry, whereas the caves become accessible to the public at 9 AM. This means you get to see the caves all empty, with plenty of time and opportunity to take pictures and admire the carvings. You can also do this when you have more time on your way back. The good news is that the treks are quite easy to do.

I went on the Gaimukh trail in the monsoon, which passed through the caves with the trek leader telling us about them, and we also passed some interesting nature points around. In monsoons, it was an exhilarating (albeit slippery) experience. Plus you get to see the caves and Mumbai from different vantage points as you walk on upwards. The Gaimukh Trek cost me INR450 (duration: 7 AM to 11 AM). SGNP organises other treks, too.

One of the highlights of the Gaimukh Trek is reaching a point where you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of Mumbai in all its serene beauty. From this vantage point, you can see the stunning Vihar, Tulsi, and Powai lakes stretching out in front of you, surrounded by lush green tree tops. It’s hard to believe that you’re still in Mumbai when you stand there. Take a deep breath and savour the moment, because it’s not often that you’ll find such clean, oxygen-rich air in the city.

SGNP also makes for a relaxing visit if you are in Mumbai on a long layover and have seen everything else.

  • First, I go to TripAdvisor and check out top things to do, top places, and experiences. I use this to make a rough itinerary.
  • From TripAdvisor I often go to Viator to book day tours. I love their user friendly platform and flexible cancellation policies. Compare their offers with GetYourGuide , which is great too.
  • I book my accommodations in Booking because of their flexibility and that the bookings are easily cancellable. The mobile app is great and the genius discounts are on point.
  • I recommend getting the Priority Pass . It gives you access to airport lounges and has helped me through many long waits. It’s definitely well worth the money.
  • And I am literally always on Skyscanner . I get to see the best airfares, and the airline / third party providers offering them. Try the “From: origin city” to “To: Everywhere” option to ignite your imagination on where to travel to next.
