Thank you, Sally. Making our guests feel well looked after on their travels is literally our main objective for each and every holiday we produce. We hope you enjoyed your recent cruise and of course look forward to you joining us again soon. With best wishes from your One Traveller team.

Great trip to Sri Lanka

Really enjoyable trip to Sri Lanka with a group of 27 over 50's via One Traveller. The programme, tours (mostly), hotels (mostly) and food (mostly) were fantastic. This was my 2nd trip with OT after a 5* holiday last year to Vietnam & Cambodia and I would definitely go with OT again. The amount of included meals, drinks, trips and tours makes it very good value.

Date of experience : 07 March 2024

Thank you so much for your review of your recent holiday to Sri Lanka. Its great to read that you had a nice time away in the tropics. Of course, we're also delighted that you felt the holiday offered good value, too. We hope to see you again soon for another adventure.

Excellent, efficient and Friendly

From the time you make a booking, any queries are dealt, with patience and time to explain. Our accommodation is always excellent within their control. (Nobody knows what can change). I have had many different holidays with them and wouldn’t change a thing. I made many friends from our groups and some time we see each other again on new adventures. Looking forward to meeting up with new friends on my next adventure. If you are on your own and of mature years you will be made most welcome by the staff and tour guides of One Traveller and join the “family”

Date of experience : 16 March 2024

Dear Jennifer, Thank you so much for your kind words and for giving us five stars! We are so pleased that you enjoyed your time away with us. Your positive feedback will be shared with the whole team and we look forwards to you travelling with us again soon. Kind regards, The One Traveller team

Full on tour for 22 days

Full on tour for 22 days, I did Victoria Falls & Rovos Train extras. Upto the Rovos train the tour was enjoyable. Rovos train was OK until it moved off travelling on narrow gauge rail tracks at slow pace of about 20 to 30mph all day & all night, on tracks used by relentless long mining trains, tracks not maintained properly carriages we're being rocked back & forth constantly with numerous juddering. I thought we had square wheels fitted as standard ! Could not sleep properly for 3 nights due to this & constant diesel train fumes coming into my cabin, which was 3rd from 3 train diesel engine units. Reported this to Henne the train manager, but he was not concerned, did nothing. Would never recommend a Rovos train from Vic falls to Pretoria..apparently staff said all south African train tracks are narrow gauge...about 90-100cm ..UK trains are about 142cm much wider & gives a more smooth & stable ride. Rovos train brochure very glossy, but beware..they dont mention rough ride.....very expensive add on, very disappointed indeed.

Dear Colin, Thank you so much for your feedback, I'm pleased you had an enjoyable tour. I am so sorry to read about your Rovos Rail experience and do understand that this must have been frustrating for you especially with the lack of sleep, If would like to discuss the matter further, please get in touch (01760 722 011 or [email protected]). Our team will only be happy to talk through the situation more with you. Kindest Regards Your One Traveller Team.

A fabulous holiday - no worries

Absolutely everything was organised for me, all I had to do was be punctual then sit back and enjoy the experience. My fellow One Travellers were a delightful, friendly group. There was always someone to chat to and share the pleasure of sightseeing. My daughters commented that I look happy and peaceful in my photographs, which is certainly how I felt.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. What a lovely holiday you had! The social side of a One Traveller holiday is so important and it is great to read how well you got on with your fellow travellers. I hope you are still in touch and that you will look to join more adventures soon. With grateful thanks from your One Traveller team

Excellent holiday

I enjoyed my holiday to South Africa and the Victoria Falls very much. The itinerary and accommodation were excellent. There were poor experiences at 2 restaurants but I hope those will be changed for future holidays. This is the reason I have not given 5 stars. For me, the highlights were the stay at the Kruger National Park, which far exceeded my expectations, and the Victoria Falls add on.

Thank you for your lovely review of your recent visit to South Africa. It is great to learn of your enjoyment of this holiday - one that is genuinely packed with highlights, as you know. Its a shame some of the restaurants you visited weren't quite up to expectations. We'll certainly look at this more before our next departure. We hope to see you again soon for another exciting holiday. With best wishes from your One Traveller team

Great company

Have done two tours with One Traveller and another one booked for June. I think this speaks for itself. Great company and wonderful tour managers. Very efficient. I can highly recommend.

Uk guide needs to be more pro active pointless giving phone contact when never answered in country guide Lek marvellous and driver Numbering system does not work on coach or dinner apart from that great holiday

Date of experience : 23 March 2024

Dear Mr Dunseath, Thank you for your review. We're pleased to read that you enjoyed your recent holiday to Thailand. Lek is a familiar face on our holidays to his home country and we know how much extra he brings to our itinerary. Its great to see you were impressed with his guidance. We'll pass back your comments about your Tour Manager and our numbering system to the team who put this holiday together. Thanks for letting us know your thoughts on these elements of the holiday, too. We hope you will join us again soon for more solo travelling adventures. With best wishes from your One Traveller team.

First One Traveller experience…

This was my first holiday with One Traveller. The pre holiday admin was the best I have experienced and I have used many firms over the years. The tour manager was very experienced and the two local guides were very knowledgeable and were eager to talk about their country and its customs. The hotels and food were excellent. The tour was well planned and showed us a variety experienced. Unfortunately the weather caused some problems but that was unforeseen. I have already booked another holiday with One Traveller.

My holiday to Sri Lanka far exceeded my expectations. With beautiful hotels, with amazing food buffets making the accommodation second to none. This was a very packed itinerary, but the included excursions were excellent and not to be missed. The local guide was very experienced and knowledgeable and was with us for the entire tour. I could write volumes about how great this holiday was. Sri Lanka is a wonderful, welcoming island.

Thank you very much for your five-star review! What more could we ask for as a company than to see such a happy guest after their holiday! It sounds an amazing experience for you and your fellow travellers. I'm so pleased all went well and hope you are already plotting your next adventure. Kind regards, The OT Team

A Solo Travellers dream company to deal with

From start to finish one Traveller have been amazing. As a solo traveller for the first time from the minute I spoke to one of their advisors to the Tour Manager throughout my trip everything was organised so professionally and informative. Brilliant.

The South Africa tour was fantastic. One or two minor setbacks but handled well by the tour manager. Would recommend with a couple of tweaks to the itinerary at the end of the holiday

Having dedicated tour managers who go…

Having dedicated tour managers who go the extra distance to make things happen, if something suddenly changes from the itinerary. I have experienced Simon Whatling twice now with both the Indian trips, and he certainly falls into that category.

Cario and Nile Cruise

Went on Cairo and Nile Cruise trip on 21 February and returned on Sunday 3 March. I enjoyed the Tour very much and the itinerary was excellent. We were 2 groups of 25 people in each group, which makes it a large group but there were 2 coaches and 2 Excellent Tour Managers. I usually prefer maximum 25 people but everything went smoothly. The cruise was wonderful with delicious food and excellent crew. I thoroughly recommend this tour. It may be expensive than other tour companies but so much is included in the price.

Date of experience : 03 March 2024

Dear Jaya, Thank you so much for your lovely five-star review of your recent One Traveller holiday to Egypt. We're delighted you found our arrangements to your liking and that the cruise went smoothly. We do try to include as much as possible within the one overall holiday price, so that our guests can concentrate on the important business of having fun each day. We'll ensure your two Tour Managers are aware of your positivity, as we know Penny and Carole work very hard to ensure all goes well. Thank you again for such wonderful feedback. We look forward to you joining us again soon. With best wishes from your One Traveller team

The cruise was 5 stars

The cruise was 5 stars, everything was perfect. The group was restricting, not many good tours. Will do the trip again , with my own arrangements. Lisa was the best tour manager by far.

Dear Armelle Matha, Thank you for your lovely review and for five stars! We are pleased to hear that you had a good time with Lisa, our tour managers put a lot of work in to make these holidays enjoyable for guests and I will be passing your kind words onto her. I hope that we get the opportunity to host your next solo travelling adventure. Kind regards, The One Traveller team

Our Sicily holiday offers a true taste of the diverse and welcoming culture that defines this captivating island with its blend of historic cities, archaeological treasures, delectable cuisine, and relaxed beachfront escapes. Lake Garda, Europe's stunning gem near Verona, is Italy's largest lake, adorned with vibrant citrus and olive groves flourishing under its Mediterranean climate. The Alps' majestic presence serves as a backdrop to quaint old towns dotting its shores. The north boasts dramatic vistas with mountainous terrains and charming villages, while the sun-drenched south, broader and flatter, hosts the jutting Sirmione peninsula. Bardolino and Garda, nestled on the eastern shore, offer delightful stays amidst vineyard-laden hinterlands crafting renowned olive oil. B&B in UK's 'retirement capital' crowned one of world's best

A traditional riad in Morocco, a lakeside spot in Sao Paulo… or a B&B in Scarborough?

While the north Yorkshire town – once dubbed the UK’s ‘retirement capital’ – might seem like the odd one out here, you’d be wrong.

A B&B in Scarborough has just been named one of the best in the world – beaten only by an offering in Mauritius , and coming ahead of accommodation in sought-after destinations including Brazil , USA , Australia and Morocco .

The Toulson Court B&B placed second on TripAdvisor’s list of the best B&Bs in the world for 2024.

It’s the fourth year the popular hotel has been recognised, after claiming the top spot in 2021 , 2022 and 2023 .

This year, not only did it smash the international competition – it was also deemed better than luxurious bolt holes in Devon and Dorset.

And you won’t have to break the bank to stay at one of the world’s best, as Toulson Court is budget friendly. Prices for a single room start from just £67.50 per night, including breakfast.

The family owned B&B is run by couple James and Angela, who have previously spoken about how delighted they are to see their business put firmly on the map.

‘We never thought an ordinary B&B in Scarborough could become the best in the world,’ said James, when speaking to GB News last year.

Angela added: ‘We look after our guests. I say guests but we really do treat them like friends and family… we always try and go that extra mile.’

James credited a loyal base of returning customers for their success, as well as word of mouth – and of course, the sun, sea and sand that Scarborough offers, which he said puts people in a ‘happy, holiday mode’.

‘There’s so much to do,’ he said. Fantastic walks, lovely beaches and lots of free entertainment… the list is endless.

And, regular customers will know that not only is James the co-owner, he also gets the title of ‘singing chef’. That’s right, James serves up a side of song with your full English in the morning – which goes down a treat with guests.

AD FEATURE: WIN the ultimate three-night VIP break with Butlin's Big Weekenders

The lucky winner will bag a Butlin’s Big Weekender break for them and three pals at Minehead, Bognor Regis or Skegness. The prize includes three nights of accommodation in a gold apartment or hotel (Bognor only), plus premium dining, VIP passes to unforgettable events, and even American-style brekkie favourites and unlimited bubbles or beers at Bottomless Brunch.

To enter, simply head  here   and fill out your details. It’s going to be huge!

Competition closes midnight 26 April 2024.  Terms and conditions apply .

‘The breakfast was superb and ‘the singing chef’s is a great tonic in the morning’, wrote one visitor who had travelled to Scarborough from Edinburgh.

Travellers also loved the place for it’s proximity to the beach as well as extra touches – like balloons if a guest is celebrating their birthday, or a chocolate rose on the bed for Valentine’s Day .

‘Where do I start?’ asked one reviewer, who travelled solo in April 2024. ‘Angela and James are fabulous and they work hard to make Toulson Court a delight to visit and very comfortable. Their home feels like your home because they make you feel very welcome and nothing is too much trouble for them.’

While another traveller said the place was outstanding: ‘Fabulous friendly hosts, spotlessly clean, great food, a singing chef, super zingy homemade lemon curd with the breakfast. We couldn’t have asked for more.’

Toulson Court came second only to the Voile Bleue in Mauritius , a stunning stay that has an infinity pool which overlooks the Indian Ocean.

Best B&Bs in the world

  • Voile Bleue, Mauritius
  • The Toulson Court, UK
  • Dar Ahlam Hotel, Morocco
  • Abode Bombay, India
  • Pousada Gaia Viva, Brazil
  • Highcliffe House, UK
  • Candleberry Inn, Cape Cod, USA
  • Gloucester House, UK
  • Yarra Gables, Australia
  • The Berburry Hotel, UK

This B&B actually knocked Toulson off the top spot for the first time in three years.

Elsewhere on the list there was also Dar Ahlam Hotel, a city in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, and Highcliffe House, which has a stunning roof terrace which overlooks Exmoor National Park.

TripAdvisor said they determined this years rankings based on the the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings posted on the site over the 12 month period between January 1 and December 31, 2023, as well as an ‘additional editorial process’.

A traveller ’s candid confession about not wanting to help their partner with her luggage has sparked widespread debate over relationship expectations.

In a 23 April post to Reddit’s popular forum, Am I The A**hole , the individual gave context to their situation and asked for the opinions of anonymous users on who was in the wrong.

They started by explaining that their 25-year-old partner had their own 66-pound suitcase, while the Redditor usually took a large and small backpack that could carry about 55 pounds worth of stuff. Carrying two backpacks also always freed the original poster’s arms to carry “extra pieces (hostel linen, tote bags etc)”.

“It’s relatively comfortable, and importantly, it leaves me fairly free to go wherever terrain-wise,” they added of their packing method. “She does not use this approach, instead opting for the bohemoth roller suitcase and a smaller one. This means she cannot move her luggage over anything but the smoothest of ground.”

According to the Reddit user, their partner’s suitcase is so heavy that airport staff members typically place warning stickers on the outside shell. However, the Redditor particularly hates how his partner’s large luggage encourages her to pack more than necessary.

They wrote: “Meaning us lugging around gear that is rarely if ever taken out of the suitcase at stops. This all means that it is left to me to get our collective luggage to where it needs to be, the latest incident being up six flights of narrow stairs.”

Seeking advice on what the right decision would be, the Reddit user questioned whether refusing to help his partner moving forward was a good idea.

“I’m considering refusing to help in future trips unless she gets a more mobile and practical piece of luggage, is that likely to work and would it make me TA [the a**hole]?” they asked.

Readers flooded the original poster’s comments section, arguing how this could be seen as an effective or ineffective solution.

“I’m going with YTA, the reason being it’s a poor solution to the problem. Seems like you might have different ideas about holidays,” one reader proclaimed. “Your partner isn’t a backpacker, she likely doesn’t want to be climbing six flights of stairs.”

Another agreed: “YTA, massive. I also pack like your girlfriend and my bf packs like you (even less, he uses only one backpack). When I travel with my partner, he doesn’t let me touch the big suitcase. It’s the decent thing to do in a relathionship.”

“My mother taught me that if you can’t carry it, don’t take it. I travel a lot and have recently bought a smaller suitcase to improve my packing,” a third disagreed.

However, another person remarked: “I decided decades ago that if I can’t pick up my suitcase and actually run with it, then I have too much stuff.”

“I may be old school in my opinion, but making your female partner carry heavier items than you are isn’t cool,” one blunt person said.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Colourful seaside spot is one of ‘least visited’ towns in UK with very few train travellers

author image

A line of colourful houses by the harbour taken from Market Street in Aberaeron

Tens of millions of people pass through the UK’s busiest train stations each year, visiting London Liverpool Street , London Victoria, Birmingham New Street, Leeds and Manchester Piccadilly daily as part of their commute.

But at the other end of the scale, there are several locations that passengers rarely travel to and from.

According to the experts at Trainline, two of the least visited towns in the UK are Aberaeron in Wales and Melrose in Scotland.

The rail and coach travel company told Metro.co.uk that both destinations only had between one and 100 Trainline passengers within the last year (from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024).

We’ve taken a closer look at these overlooked spots to see why they’re being passed over – and it seems we’re all missing out, as they’re a pair of stunning hidden gems.

Harbour at low tide, Aberaeron, Wales, United Kingdom

What to do in Aberaeron

Aberaeron is located on the Ceredigion Coast and is sometimes referred to as the ‘gem of Cardigan Bay’.

The town is incredibly picturesque, filled with charming colourful houses, and the centre offers plenty to do, with lots of independent local businesses such as craft shops, restaurants, and bars.

For those who love the outdoors, you can take a wander around the harbour, or head to Aberaeron South Beach for lovely views and the chance to spot a porpoise or a bottlenose dolphin on a warm day. The location also happens to be on the Wales Coast Path and The Coastal Way, meaning there are plenty of great walks to go on for any keen explorers.

Aberaeron North Wales beach high angle drone aerial view

If architecture or interiors are more your vibe, Aberaeron is home to an impressive National Trust property — Llanerchaeron Estate. The 18th-century Georgian villa is set in the wooded Aeron valley, and has a beautiful walled garden, a farm and a lake on site.

Visit Wales recommends those who visit Aberaeron make the most of the trip by enjoying some fresh seafood at Y Seler on a table overlooking the harbour. Items you might find on the menu include mussels, scallops, cod, shrimp and sea bass. And why not wash your meal down with some honey wine from nearby New Quay Honey Farm and Meadery, or grab an ice cream from The Hive?

How much are train tickets to Aberaeron?

The price of a train ticket to Aberaeron varies greatly depending on where you’re travelling from and when you want to depart.

Competition closes midnight 26 April 2024.  Terms and conditions apply .

Currently on Trainline, tickets from London Paddington can be purchased from a little as £37 without a Railcard or £24.40 with one, but more expensive journeys cost as much as £99 at peak times without a Railcard. The trip itself takes just under six hours and involves changing trains along the route.

Melrose.

What to do in Melrose

Also on Trainline’s list of least visited destinations is Melrole, which was the birth place of Rugby Sevens and hosted the first ever tournament in 1883. The Melrose Sevens are still held there each Spring, and the town adopts a carnival-like atmosphere during this time.

If sport isn’t your thing, don’t worry as the town has much more to offer, including breathtaking views of the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills. At the foot of the hills you’ll find Melrose in the valley of the River Tweed, as well as the haunting ruins of Melrose Abbey.

History buffs might be curious to know that a casket believed to contain the heart of Robert the Bruce, king of the Scots between July 1274 and June 1329, is buried there.

And for those with green fingers, you’re able to visit one of the National Trust’s Scottish Gardens here: Priorwood. The rustic walled garden can be found in the precinct of the Abbey, and there’s an orchard where 90 different types of apple are grown.

Melrose Abbey, Scotland

How much are train tickets to Melrose?

Train tickets to Melrose are even pricier than those to Aberaeron, with some journeys from London King’s Cross to the Scottish town costing more than £200.

The cheapest tickets we could find for this week without a Railcard were £97.70, although with a Railcard this price went down to £64.45.

This journey takes more than five hours, and isn’t completely by train. Passengers travel from London to Berwick-upon-Tweed, where they then change and get a bus to Melrose.

The price of tickets could be a factor as to why the location doesn’t get as many rail visitors, but the area certainly doesn’t do a bad job attracting people, as it’s said to be one of the top tourist spots on the Scottish borders — and it’s especially popular with rugby fans.

In addition to these towns, Trainline shared a few other UK destinations with the fewest visitors over the last year. The list included Lakenheath in Suffolk, Thornton Abbey in Lincolnshire, and Sandplace in Cornwall.

Interestingly, there are also a number of popular UK towns that people visit each year which don’t even have a train station. Gosport, on the south coast of Hampshire doesn’t have a station, for example, and neither does Witney in Oxfordshire, or Haverhill in Suffolk.

This comes after the UK’s favourite city was recently revealed, and people may be shocked to learn that it’s not London.

Despite the fact the capital has won a slew of awards and titles over the years – and in 2023 was named the best city in the world for the ninth year in a row – it seems Brits aren’t so convinced.

According to a recent YouGov survey , only 63% of people held a positive opinion of the city, which ranks third in the list.

It was actively disliked by 17% of those asked, with a further 20% having no opinion of the city whatsoever.

The favourite, meanwhile, was the city of York ( dubbed the UK’s ‘friendliest’ place and described as one of the country’s most ‘welcoming’ cities in 2023) which scored an impressive 74% in the popularity contest. Trailing just behind was Edinburgh, which got a 71% approval rating.

Reply from One Traveller | Mature Solo Holidays

Date of experience : March 07, 2024

We will always be happy to help. Wishing you all the best for a great holiday, from your One Traveller team.

Date of experience : March 03, 2024

Flight delays warning after power failure at Liverpool airport

One passenger reported being stranded on the tarmac for almost three hours as Liverpool John Lennon Airport tried to resolve a power outage - while another said a "full Ryanair flight" had been sat waiting at Dublin Airport since 1.30pm.

Travellers have been warned of possible delays after a power outage grounded all flights at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The airport said engineers "have resolved the earlier Air Traffic Control power issue", but there may still be delays to flights.

Aircraft operations have now resumed at the airport in Liverpool .
