5 Things To Do On A 5 Hours Layover At The Chennai Airport

chennai places to visit near airport

I went to the Andaman Islands with my family last year and while coming back to Delhi we had a 5-hour layover at the Chennai airport. We decided to turn this going-to-be-boring layover into an adventurous one by exploring as much of the city as possible in the given 5 hours.

We did a quick Google search on the attractions and things to see near the airport, and we got a handful of them. Chennai is a big city and the airport is in one corner so we had to take the fastest mode of transportation which is the city Metro. It proved to be economical as well.

metro-rail-chennai-route-map

Here are the 5 things that we did in our short excursion to Chennai.

Table of Contents

1. Explore The Forum Vijaya Mall

Reaching by metro: (Route-1)

Chennai Airport >> Alandur (interchange) >> Vadapalani >> The Forum Vijaya Mall

It would take 20-25 minutes or more by taxi depending on the traffic so metro is highly recommended as it took hardly 10 minutes to reach there.

The-Forum-Vijaya-Mall-Chennai

Exploring the mall can be a good time pass. You could definitely shop till you drop and then feast on some freshly baked Australian cookies at the Cookie Man.

2. Watch a movie at Palazzo

Palazzo-Cinema-Vadapalani-Chennai

This is on the 3 rd floor of the Forum Vijaya Mall. Even if you don’t wish to see a movie just visit the place for its grandeur. This place is also known as the ‘Movie Palace’. The grand Chandelier, Classic paintings and the royal fountain all add up to its royal look.

You can book your movie tickets here

3. Watch a 7D show

7D-Trix-World-Cinemas-Forum-Mall-Vadapalani-Chennai

This is something that we don’t find everywhere and hence highly recommended. The ‘Trix 7D World Cinemas’ offers a good 7D show to enjoy. You can book the tickets right on the spot. This is also located on the 3 rd floor of the Forum Mall and the ticket costs 250 INR per person.

4. Visit the St. Thomas Mount

Take Route 2 on the metro, where the route looks like:

Chennai Airport >> Alandur (interchange) >> St. Thomas Mount Station

It would take 15 to 20 minutes or more by taxi again depending on the traffic so metro is highly recommended.

On a peaceful, small scenic hillock in Chennai, the shrine is attributed to bringing Christianity in India. It’s a nice place to pay a visit and admire its humble surroundings.

5. Explore the Temples around

temple-near-chennai-airport

Exploring the city’s beautiful temples is a good option. The Jain temple is quite close to the airport and is just 6-minute drive from the airport. This temple has a good resting place and eatery. Another temple that should be on your list is the Thirusoolanathar Temple, which is a Hindu temple located about 3kms from the airport.

What to Do On a Layover in Chennai, India

The Kathipara flyover near Chennai Airport is one of Asias largest clover-leaf flyovers

Layovers aren’t often enough to get a decent experience of any city. This is especially true for culturally rich Chennai, which is a destination that grows on you the longer you stay. However, that doesn’t mean Chennai isn’t any fun if you’re on a short layover here. From medieval churches and temples to colonial-era landmarks , here’s everything you can do to put your layover to good use.

If you’re on a three-hour layover….

A three-hour layover is always tight, but if budgeted the right way it can be ample time to check out some great must-visit attractions in Chennai. The airport isn’t in the centre of the city, but thanks to recent improvements in infrastructure, connectivity between the city and the airport has become much easier and faster. Still, getting to most popular landmarks can take a minimum of half-an-hour, or even more for destinations such as the Marina Beach , which is at the northern end of the city.

The old church atop the St. Thomas Mount Hillock

The closest must-visit attraction from the airport is St. Thomas Mount, which is located just a few kilometres away. Apart from being a great vantage point for viewing the city, the St. Thomas Mount is also steeped in history. It was on this hillock that St. Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus held his sermons and is believed to have died. The hill-top still houses a centuries-old church and a cave shrine in honour of St. Thomas. If you don’t want to exert yourself on a three-hour layover by climbing a hill, other fun options to do include spending some time at popular bars and restaurants near the airport such as the Irish House or Salt Company 531 Kitchen and Bar.

The Chennai airport is in itself quite an architectural landmark and has a number of great options of food and drink

If you’re on a six-hour layover…

While getting a holistic experience of Chennai may take longer, there is still a lot you can do with six hours in Chennai. To budget it right, it would be wise to pick places close to the airport. While relaxing at the Marina Beach might not be feasible, Chennai’s other popular beach, the Besant Nagar Beach is fairly close to the airport and is only a 30-minute drive away with favourable traffic.

Sunrise at Besant Nagar Beach in Chennai

Other popular options include the Pheonix Marketcity Mall, one of the largest shopping complexes in Chennai , which is just about 10km away and provides a great shopping experience. Also just a few kilometres away from the airport are green spaces such as the Guindy National Park , one of the few national parks in India located within the limits of a major city, and the Theosophical Society International Headquarters, which also features a fully-fledged library.

The Guindy National Park is one of the few national parks located within city limits

If you’re on a 12-hour-layover…

A 12-hour-layover is truly a jackpot that allows you to do almost everything that anyone visiting Chennai on a holiday ought to. Start your clock with a visit to the truly magnificent Marina Beach, which is the second-longest urban beach in the world before heading to Mylapore, one of Chennai’s best-known and culturally rich neighbourhoods. Among must-visit places in Mylapore are the Kapaleeswarar Temple , which has a history going back 13 centuries, and the Santhome Cathedral Basilica, which is one of the few basilicas in the world built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus.

Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore has a history going back to the 7th century AD

Other major destinations to visit in Chennai are the Government Museum, heritage district near the Central Station , and the shopping district of T Nagar . Finish your layover/mini-vacation with an evening drive along the scenic East Coast Road, and you’ll have yourself a quintessential Chennai experience in just 12 hours!
