Roger Waters’ “This Is Not A Drill” Tour Brings Powerful Messaging And Music To Austin’s Moody Center

' src=

AUSTIN, TX- Replete with political commentary the performance began with a very special PSA;  “Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats. The show is about to begin. Before it does, two public announcements: Firstly, out of consideration for your fellow patrons, please turn off your cell phones. And secondly, if you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd, but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people, you might do well to f— off to the bar right now. Thank you. Please sit back and enjoy the show.”

The British legend performed a 2 part immersive set starting with “Comfortably Numb” and a medley of “The Happiest Days of Our Lives”, “Another Brick In The Wall pt. II and III”. We were given a very short time for the latter 2 songs to take photographs and it felt like a blur. I shot the images and sang at the same time, completely overwhelmed by the experience and the opportunity of being so close to one of my most beloved artists.

Roger Waters at Moody Center 10/6/22. Setlist.

There was no part of the arena with a poor vantage point; the set design and visuals were configured in a way that allowed the entire audience to fully dive into every element d and Waters performed in rotation to each different side of the arena

This wasn’t a show where you could lay back and forget about the world  —  we were painfully, loudly but beautifully reminded of the oppressed and persecuted, and the system that perpetuates the cruelty and brutality.

Through a set list dominated by Dark Side of The Moo n  (“Comfortably Numb” “Brain Damage”, “Any Colour You Like”, “Money”, “Us and them” among others), the show touched on some of the important titles in Pink Floyd’s discography including The Wall , Wish You Were Here and Animals .

Songs from Waters’ solo period included selections from his third studio album Amused to Death , Radio K.A.O.S, and his fourth and most recent solo studio album I s This the Life We Really Want?

The phenomenal performance was delivered with such grace and strength that Roger’s age (79) was a nonfactor as he vigorously worked the stage and led the band members for nearly two hours. Visual highlights included a large floating sheep, a floating pig, and Waters dressed as a WWII German officer mercilessly firing at the attendees. It was loud!

The coverage of subjects like occupation, Black Lives Matter, Trans Lives Matter, gun control, reproductive rights, police brutality, and Julian Assange were reminders of the overwhelming censorship and lack of basic human rights experienced by large members of the global population, But there was an aura of hope in the here and now I believe.

Waters closed the set honoring each member of the band with a visual display of each of them on the screens and walking each one of them out off the stage. Waters’ band consisted of Jonathan Wilson on guitars and vocals; Dave Kilminster on guitars and vocals; Jon Carin on keyboards, guitar and vocals; Gus Seyffert on bass and vocals; Robert Walter on keyboards; Joey Waronker on drums; Shanay Johnson on vocals; Amanda Belair on vocals and Seamus Blake on saxophone (who received a massive ovation)

Roger Waters performing at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas

Roger Waters | Texas Review | Ralph Arvesen

I loved his voice, I think he still sounds great, I think he still looks great, I loved the stage effects and set up, I loved his show, was well worth waiting for. I think he carries a burden of the injustices of the the world and cannot help but to express them, as do other "stars" when they have the platform. So if you can get back to being excited and happy to be there, after seeing sad pictures and hearing sad truths, its a great evening with a great singer and band. Up till writing this I’ve seen a good amount of contact’s like Elton John Paul McCartney and ELO and more but I will remember this for the rest of my life because I absolutely cried at the and I’m not scared to admit that because In my opinion music is the language of God and has a way of talking to you and while you did eclipse I felt the music speaking to me and was sobering like nobody’s business but it was a good cry. I do not think I had ever cried more than I had at that concert, so Roger Waters if you ever see this, thank you. Amazing experience. Roger Waters knows how to put on a freaking show! I’ve seen him twice and he does not disappoint. He puts so much thought into his performance. Roger is a rock superstar. The sound and light where as usual was not only top notch but the best in the business, Roger subtly reminded the audience that David Gilmore was not an original member and Syd Barret was. A set selection that skewed self-indulgent but hell Roger Waters has earned it. Music was great stage show performance phenomenal and for all the people that complain about his politics you do realize that Pink Floyd music has always been antiestablishment. He never once brought up any particular party and basically dropped a bunch of truth bombs. I guess the people who bitch about that just can’t handle the truth. It was awesome, unlike any event I have ever attended before. The stage setup was spectacular for the view of the audience. Roger worked the audience with each song. That was without a doubt the best stage show that I have ever seen. Thank you Roger. Blown away. The Show was spectacular. The sound, visuals and lightening was amazing. Roger Watters and band were so good. I’ll never forget this epic show. It was worth every penny.

Beyond ACL Fest: Roger Waters, Pavement, Skip Marley, more music in Austin this week

Omar Apollo plays Saturday at ACL Live. He's also on the ACL Fest lineup this year.

Here are our top picks, beyond the Austin City Limits Music Festival at Zilker Park , for live music Austin Oct. 6-12.

Thursday: Roger Waters at Moody Center

The frontman for legendary British band Pink Floyd has always been one for grand gestures, from 1973’s impeccably recorded “Dark Side of the Moon” to the ambitious double-album/film “The Wall” to live shows with over-the top audio-visual splendor. His new in-the-round solo tour, This Is Not a Drill, follows suit: Waters describes it as “a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to love, protect and share our precious and precarious planet home.” Expect a mix of Pink Floyd classics and more recent Waters songs. $35-$275. 8 p.m. moodycenteratx.com .

Friday-Saturday: Austin Corn Lovers Fiesta at Lost Well and Sagebrush

Saustex Records head honcho Jeff Smith is nothing if not a merry prankster, so it's fitting he named this ACL Fest alternative for the "corn-punk" antics of his band the Hickoids, who'll play both nights. The action begins Friday at the Lost Well, with music from Labretta Suede & the Motel 6, Jesus Christ Superfly and others starting at 8 p.m. Saturday's show at Sagebrush kicks off at 5 p.m. and will feature Churchwood, Shandon Sahm, Jean Caffeine and others. Tickets, $11-$15, are available at saustexrecords.bandcamp.com .

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Saturday: Omar Apollo at ACL Live (ACL Fest Nights show)

While the internet obsesses over whether the R&B crooner’s album “Ivory” chronicles a relationship with reclusive genius Frank Ocean, we’ll just wrap ourselves in the velvety falsetto choruses that float over Apollo’s confessional verses and revel in lyrical pictures that will feel familiar to anyone who has loved and lost. Apollo’s debut full-length features production from Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (“Tamagotchi”), guest verses from Daniel Caesar (“Invincible”) and Kali Uchis (“Bad Life”) and intricate songwriting that crosses barriers of language and genre to produce songs that shimmer with pure heart. $35 and up. 9 p.m. acl-live.com .

Saturday: MUNA, Isaac Dunbar at Empire (ACL Fest Nights show)

The queer pop-rock standouts MUNA signed to Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records label have logged several Austin appearances, including an opening slot for Harry Styles at ACL Live in 2017. But Austin360’s Eric Webb called their 2022 SXSW appearance “star-solidifying.” Their self-titled 2022 album builds on a catalog of dance songs centered on desperation and longing. “This is the grand tradition of crying in the club, but with explicitly queer lyrics that invite that community to see themselves in lyrics about infatuation and toxic relationships, no mental gymnastics necessary,” Webb wrote. Technically sold out. 9 p.m. empireatx.com . — D.S.S.

More: Phoebe Bridgers brings a so-iconic MUNA, a Greg Casar speech and a punk orchestra to SXSW

Saturday: John Fullbright at C-Boy’s

Don’t let this Oklahoma troubadour’s Austin record-release show get lost in the flood of ACL Fest Nights shows. To call “The Liar,” out Sept. 30, a long-awaited release is an understatement: It’s been eight years since his last record, after an auspicious studio debut in 2012 netted a Grammy nomination. He’s continued to play Austin semi-regularly and has built up a formidable batch of new material, including a powerful ballad called “Stars” that got recorded (but not released, so far) by John Legend. $22. 7:30 p.m. cboys.com .

Sunday: John Lennon Birthday Tribute at 3Ten

For the 32nd year, local singer-songwriter Stephen Doster is gathering the ad-hoc #9 Orchestra for a tribute to John Lennon, who would have turned 82 this year. Special guest performers will include Kathy McCarty, Johnny Goudie, Seela Misra, Larry Seaman, JM Stevens and Jody Denberg; musicians joining Doster in the orchestra are Bruce Marton, Maria Nehring, Shana Norton, Darin Murphy, Randy Miller, Stephen Jeffrey, Sam Jeffrey, Ben Cocke, David Moerbe and Kelly Hodge. $25-$35. 7 p.m. 3tenaustin.com .

Monday-Tuesday: Pavement at ACL Live and 3Ten

The California band fronted by singer-songwriter Stephen Malkmus was perhaps the quintessential 1990s indie act, so it’s fitting that they called it quits in 2000. A brief reunion in 2010 lasted for just a year, but after another decade apart, they reconvened for a pandemic-delayed tour that will bring them to Austin for three shows at the same address, each with a different function. On Oct. 10, they’ll tape the “Austin City Limits” TV show at 8 p.m. for the first time, after which they’ll head downstairs to play an intimate 10 p.m. show at ACL Live’s sister club 3Ten. The trip wraps up with another concert upstairs at ACL Live on Oct. 11 with Piranha Rama opening at 8 p.m. The two ticketed shows are sold out, but you might still be able to get into the TV taping: Check acltv.com and submit your name for a chance to get free tickets. acl-live.com .

More: 'Austin City Limits' tapings in October include Pavement, The War on Drugs, Spoon

Tuesday: Rodney Crowell at 04 Center

One of the most literary-oriented country music artists of his time, Rodney Crowell naturally is also well suited to writing prose, as evidenced by his acclaimed new book, "Word for Word." It's a mix of stories about his life and lyrics from his songs, and this show will be the same, with Crowell both reading from its pages and performing some of his best-known songs solo acoustic. $48-$78. 8 p.m. 04center.com .

Wednesday: Skip Marley at 3Ten

Mixing one-drop rhythms with modern hip-hop and R&B grooves, the third generation Marley is emerging as the heir apparent of his grandfather’s crown. Marley carries forward his family’s legacy with deeply spiritual protest anthems and cries for unity in the face of despair. He paid homage to his elders (and gave the people what they wanted) by mixing Bob Marley classics with his originals at an afternoon ACL Fest set last year. $40. 8 p.m. 3tenaustin.com .

Moda Center, Portland, OR 09/10/2022

When Roger Waters brought his The Wall tour to Portland 10 years ago, the Moda Center was still called the Rose Garden. One of my wife’s middle-school students and his father had attended that concert, and the next day in class, the student told my wife that his father claimed Waters is a conservative. That is a ridiculous reading of the Pink Floyd classic album. If that student had attended Waters’ This Is Not a Drill tour, finally happening now after the COVID-19 pandemic stopped production two years ago, he would realize a decade later that his father was full of shit.

Waters played 24 songs over the course of two-and-a-half hours, with a large portion devoted to Pink Floyd material. For fans who caught the musician’s Us + Them tour in 2017, there was only a little overlap as Waters seemed to purposely trot out the Floyd material that went overlooked last time as well as some surprises from his solo career. But the musician, who recently turned 79, doubled down on the politics, turning the concert into a multimedia experience that could be both exhilarating and exasperating no matter your ideology.

Sure, last time around you had Donald Trump’s head on a giant floating pig. But in a message before the show, Waters told fans to both shut off their cellphones and “If you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people… you might do well to fuck off to the bar right now.” In a progressive town like Portland, the crowd met this messaging with cheers. But how did the show play a few nights before in Salt Lake City? Or when Waters reaches Texas in October?

As Waters and his band played on a stage set in the center of the arena, a multimedia show took place on a giant screen that hovered overhead giving support to Black Lives Matter, trans rights, Native Americans and numerous other causes. A litany of slogans from “Fuck the Supreme Court” to “Fuck Your Guns” flashed overhead. Waters is throwing his support behind reproductive rights. During one section, the face of every American president from Reagan to Biden filled the screen, slapped with the brand of “WAR CRIMINAL” and evidence of the blood that stains their hands, such as Obama authorizing drone strikes.

Even for people (such as this reviewer) who embrace the same politics as Waters, the video sometimes threatened to upstage or distract from the show. During a beautiful rendition of “Us and Them,” for example, images of destruction and casualties in the Middle East undercut the song’s crescendos. Also, some of the songs featured animated sections that felt out of place. But minor gripes aside, Waters and company put on one hell of a show.

Kicking off the concert with “Comfortably Numb,” Waters replaced the soaring version from The Wall with a quieter, more haunting rendition. At this point, the screen covered the stage and we could only hear Waters’ disembodied voice. But then the screen lifted and Waters, still looking fit and spry as he nears 80, appeared, leading the band through crowd-pleasers, “The Happiest Days of Our Lives,” and the second and third parts of “Another Brick in the Wall.”

Much of the Pink Floyd material was drawn from the band’s golden period between 1973-1979, with the bulk of the songs coming from The Dark Side of the Moon , Wish You Were Here , Animals and The Wall. But he seemed to consciously play material not found on his prior tour. So instead of “Dogs” and “Pigs (Three Different Ones),” we heard “Sheep.” Instead of “Welcome to the Machine,” we got “Have a Cigar” and “Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX).” Waters even treated fans to a deep cut, “Two Suns in the Sunset” from his final record with Pink Floyd, The Final Cut.

The pandemic gives urgency to seeing aging rockers such as Waters play before time runs out. At one point during the show, Waters made the point that we must seize on the moment. That life is happening now. That this is not a drill. And to never, ever claim that Roger Waters is a fucking conservative.

I went to the O2 last night and walked out after 30 minutes or so. If I’d wanted to go to a protest rally with a bloke playing a few songs I’d have gone to speakers corner in Hyde Park for free. I know the songs are highly motivated by political and cultural repression of individuals and the mass killings of those who dare to protest but there is a time and place to air your personal views verbally and I don’t think a rock concert is one of them.

I wanted to hear an artist perform a selection of his and Pink Floyd songs live and to a high quality. I got neither as the sound quality was very odd. There seemed to be an underlying “ringing”distortion that I found hard to identify. For clarification I design Home Cinemas and acoustic integrity of the room is the first thing we address. It wasn’t clipping distortion or residual amplification harmonic distortion.I think it was the many steel beams and structures of the O2 resonating.

Roger. The songs say it all. No need for your rants and criticism of various individuals who are not present to defend themselves.

Finally, why did it take so long to get everyone into the arena? I was working the following day so the thought of getting home at 2am because of the late by 2hour start did not amuse me. If this had been a football match the final whistle would have blown before the fans had got into the stadium. Sort it out O2.

Off to see Peter Gabriel next. Fingers crossed he hasn’t caught Roger’s disease.
