Day 1: Auckland

Welcome to Auckland! Settle into your accommodation and be ready for the 6pm pre-tour meeting. Here you will get to know your Tour Manager and be introduced to your new roadtrip friends.

Afterwards, the evening is yours to enjoy. We recommend checking out the Auckland Sky Tower, this is the tallest building in New Zealand. If you are feeling extra daring you can jump off the Sky Tower, attached to a harness of course! Or how about checking out the Auckland War Memorial Museum, located in the middle of the beautiful Auckland Domain.

Day 2: Auckland to Coromandel

After a hearty breakfast, it’s time to board our comfortable air-conditioned vehicle and leave the big city behind. The Coromandel Peninsula is a paradise of beautiful beaches and misty rainforests. The drive here is truly spectacular – the road twists and turns dramatically round the coastline and the ocean gets clearer and more pristine before your eyes. Cameras ready – the views are magnificent.

The Coromandel is home to the famous Hot Water Beach – thousands visit each year to dig their own personal hot tub. If the tide times allow, we’ll grab our buckets and spades and get busy. We arrive in the Coromandel with plenty of time for your guide to show you around. Sample the sandy beaches, kayak, soak in hot pools or simply enjoy the vibes.

  • Visit Hot Water Beach
  • Visit Cathedral Cove

Day 3: Coromandel to Raglan

Today’s road trip to the arty mecca of Raglan will give you a first glimpse of the North Island’s rolling tree-lined hills and valleys. Your Haka guide has some great sights to show you en route, including the 55-metre high Bridal Veil Falls.

If you have always wanted to try surfing, or if you’re dying to get back on your board, Raglan is the perfect destination both for beginners and experienced surfers. Not keen on surfing? There’s plenty to enjoy in this laid-back township. With an awesome blend of cafes, bars, surf shops and galleries, the streets here ooze character and creativity. Relax on the beach and leave any lingering jet-lag behind, or enjoy a variety of bush and coastal scenery on Raglan’s walking trails.

For dinner tonight, tuck into New Zealand’s unofficial dish – fish and chips (or fush and chups, as it tends to sound in a Kiwi accent). And what better way to enjoy a tasty meal than on a sunset boat cruise of Raglan Harbour?

Day 4: Raglan to Rotorua (via Waitomo and Matamata)

Our first stop of the day is the Waitomo Caves famous for its glow worms. There are fantastic and informative walking tours of the caves where you can learn more about the history, geology and Māori mythology of this unique area of New Zealand. For those who prefer to stay above ground, we highly recommend exploring the tree-studded gorges and limestone arches of the nearby Ruakuri Forest Walk; definitely a favourite amongst the Haka guides.

The highlight of today is visiting one of NZ’s most iconic experiences – Hobbiton Movie Set. On a fully guided tour of the 12- acre Middle-earth set you will see Hobbit Holes, the Mill, and even enjoy a drink at the Green Dragon Inn! This afternoon we’ll make our way to Rotorua, famous for its geothermal activity and Māori culture. We start our time in Rotorua with The Redwoods Treewalk. This amazing included activity allows you to experience the majestic Redwood Forest from a series of suspension bridges and living decks (platforms), elevated from 9-metres to 12-metres at the highest point.

  • Redwood Forest Canopy Walk
  • Ruakuri Bush Walk

Rotorua has it all: natural beauty, unique geothermal landscapes, and Māori culture. We stay here a full day to make the very most of it.This area is world-renowned for its geothermal activity, with neon blue and red lakes, steaming rivers, violent geysers, and bubbling mud pools galore. For a truly epic brush with nature, fly high through the lush ancient forest canopy on a zipline tour complete with swing bridges crossings and treetop platforms. What better way to get to know the native plants and birds – many of which unique to New Zealand.

This evening we are welcomed to a Māori village for an unmissable cultural experience featuring combat demonstrations and – of course – the breathtaking haka. This experience extends beyond the performance – you’ll have the chance to see magnificent geothermal activity and get to spot kiwi birds.

  • See the world famous haka dance
  • See the Pohutu Geyser

Day 6: Rotorua to National Park (via Taupō)

Rotorua is a spectacular whitewater rafting destination, and with expert guidance it can be experienced by first timers and pro-paddlers alike. For the ultimate thrill this morning you can raft the highest commercial waterfall drop in the world – the 7-metre Tutea Falls, on the Kaituna River.

If that’s not your cup of tea, spend the morning exploring Rotorua’s many attractions such as the ultra-relaxing Polynesian Spa, or perhaps the naturally-impressive Kuirau Park full of steaming, hissing and boiling geothermal pools. There are also some fantastic cafes and bakeries in the area. Why not grab a sweet treat for the road – a ginger slice and a pie is as Kiwi as it gets!

From Rotorua it’s a quick drive to Taupō; a beautiful lakeside town with a stunning mountain backdrop. It’s a short drive but we’ll take our time, checking out bubbling mud pools and thundering waterfalls en route. We finish our day nestled in Taupō, where we’ll spend the next 2 nights, home to the biggest crater lake in NZ and the best access to one of the 10 best one-day walks in the world – the Tongariro Crossing.

new zealand tours rotorua geysir geothermal holiday experience best self drive tours new zealand trips

Day 7: Taupo

Lake Taupō is actually a giant volcanic crater created 70,000 years ago in one of the biggest eruptions in history. Nowadays, it’s one of NZ’s best spots for a holiday escape. And being New Zealand, there are plenty of adventure sports to be found there too!

New Zealand’s most famous day hike is also in the area. The 19.4 km Tongariro Crossing is an alpine crossing around Tongariro, one of the country’s most famous and most beautiful volcanoes. It’s a serious leg workout, but it’s worth every minute for the incredible views and landscape. Turquoise and green lakes greet you at the top, along with vistas that stretch all the way to the coast.

If you’re looking for a thrill, we suggest skydiving over the lake or bungy jumping over New Zealand’s longest river (and for the really brave, getting dunked in!). There are heaps of other activities on offer such as quad biking, cruising the lake to see Māori rock carvings, hiking along the shores, mountain biking and even the chance to soak in some of the local geothermal pools.

Day 8: Taupo to Wellington

Today we head to the coolest little capital city in the world, the hip and happening Wellington. Perched on the edge of a spectacular harbour, encircled by green, towering hills, Wellington is a stunning and compact city. Vibrant, exciting and cultured, the nation’s capital combines the stimulation and sophistication of a big city with the quirkiness and personality of a much smaller town.

After a quick afternoon orientation from your guide, head up Mount Victoria for some of the best views in town. This evening, the city lights are yours to enjoy. Discover why Wellington is celebrated for its foodie culture – you are truly spoilt for dining choices tonight.

Wellington is also widely regarded as the craft beer capital of New Zealand. Want to test this for yourself? Talk to your Haka guide to find the hidden gems.

Day 9: Wellington

Soak up the atmosphere of vibrant Wellington. Famous for being a bit on the windy side, be prepared to ditch the hairspray and go with the flow. As always, your guide will introduce you to the city with an orientation tour – including a drive around the bays through central Wellington to the Botanic Gardens and Parliament Buildings.

Today you’ll also visit a nature reserve, Zealandia. Zealandia is a groundbreaking conservation project and the world’s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary. It has successfully reintroduced over 20 species of native wildlife into this area, some of which were previously absent from mainland New Zealand for over 100 years.

You will also stop by Weta Studios, most famous for its creative contribution to all things Lord of the Rings. Take an optional tour to see prop-makers in action and learn about the immersive world of filmmaking.

Wellington has a feast of cultural attractions and its crowning glory is Te Papa, the national museum of New Zealand. Situated on Wellington’s magnificent waterfront, this internationally acclaimed museum combines leading edge technology with traditional exhibits to tell the stories of New Zealand’s land and people. The museum is free entry but you may like to opt for a tour from one of their experienced guides for a more in depth visit.

If being outdoors is more your thing, head off to Kapiti Island for an optional nature tour. Here you can see endangered birds up close and learn more about New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna.

Such an amazing trip and stunning landscapes we visited with a great crew! The tour and activities have been amazing and surprising varied plus our guide, Lauren, has been a must in the hole trip! She definitely knows how to guide, inform, entertain, and maintain a good vibe the hole tour! She’s a legend! She worries about the group and put some sense of humor despite the outbreak of this pandemic.

Southern Voyager

An absolutely wonderful trip. There is no better way to explore the most beautiful corners of New Zealand in 7 days and with amazing company. We had great fun with our guide Ben and stopped by at several terrific stops on the trip besides the "big" attractions of the Itinerary. Absolutely recommended!

Coasts & Culture Tour Tour

Coasts & Culture Tour

Do it. 14 out of 16 were solo travelers and we all got along great. Most were in their 20s, some in 30s and 40s, 2 were in the 50s and the couple were 65 and we all became friends. The younger ones liked to play music (on the bus) more than the older ones but the leader/driver was very good at keeping a nice balance. It was very relaxing and you could easily spend time with others or go off alone if you needed space.

Although Rod, the driver was very nice I felt that Intrepid had not organised the tour as well as previous Intrepid tours I have done. It was very overpriced for what was provided. The van had a broken seat belt attachment with a sharp edge which ruined a down jacket I had bought for the trip. I have asked Intrepid about it but received no reply.

Amazing experience! So smooth and fun! Amazing people! Only downside is most of the activities are not included so there’s a significant additional cost. Once in a lifetime trip!

Best of New Zealand: Mountain Biking & Black-Sand Beaches

The tour is a once in a life time opportunity, packed with plenty of amazing activities. My CEO, Jemma made all the difference, not only being a great guide she went above and beyond for everyone on my bus.

South Island Lick Tour Tour

South Island Lick Tour

This was a great trip to explore the South Island when on a short time frame. The itinerary was well thought through Including a little taster of each of the highlights. Our tour guide Dan was a star, despite being very new to Haka he was very knowledgeable and genuinely wanted to make sure everyone had a great time, while also looking out for our safety. The hostels were generally really good quality and the breakfasts provided were delicious and far exceeded my expectations with Dan even letting us submit suggestions to add to the spread. The flexibility of the trip was also a great bonus, we made some impromptu stops to beautiful scenic spots and also had the opportunity to add on activities at the last minute. The other bonus was the group, I was worried about being surrounded by 18 year olds, but was really pleased to find a diverse mix of ages with plenty in my age bracket (20s-30s) and we all got on like a house on fire! Having done similar trips with G Adventures before, I would say this one wasn’t quite as slick in terms of the organisation at a company level, e.g. there was only a hand-written book for booking activities, which felt rather rudimentary and I would have preferred to have paid as I went along rather than all at the end. Additionally, I am not sure we got great rates on some activities e.g. sky diving was listed as cheaper at the venue than what we paid (but we did get a lift for free, so all swings and roundabouts!). Re accommodation, while the hostels were great, there could have been some more thought put into who was being put into rooms together when possible e.g. all female rather than mixing us up when. Overall, all that aside, I would definitely recommend this trip, it was a great flavour and very good value for money while also providing a top overall experience.

Himanshu the representative was very Cooperative and answered all our queries. Though the group was maximum to 15 people there were some trips where we were around 50 people in the trip. We had paid for a private trip where maximum size was 15 people and hence that was disappointing. Overall the trip was good.

Classic South Island Adventure Tour

  • Mountain Hikes

Classic South Island Adventure

The Active Adventures Tui trip taken January 2020 fulfilled all our hopes for an amazing vacation! 8 days to traverse the itinerary meant a few long driving days, but all drives included beautiful scenery, as well as stops for bathrooms, photos, and short hikes. Both guides were "local" extremely knowledgeable, congenially women. Our group of 9 included 8 Americans and 1 Kiwi. Activities were well planned and modified for each person in the group. The only improvement that could be made was the bus; too many rows of seats for the space meant very little leg room. I would take this trip again, and certainly will try another route with the same company.

Ultimate North Island Adventure Tour

Ultimate North Island Adventure

This was a great tour! The guides (Lauren and Jonathan) were very accommodating with the different fitness levels of the guests and weather conditions. I loved that the guides cooked some of the meals which allowed us the freedom to relax and share wine and experiences. The hikes were excellent and liked the other activities. Sandboarding, cave tubing and mountain biking were a must do. This tour hit all the great places on the North Island. Highly recommend!

Southern Highlights - 9 Day Self Drive Tour

After a "misstep" by your team in the beginning, canceling my trip the very next day after confirmation, Jules appeared to go significantly above the routine and made sure EVERYTHING else went PERFECT. She spent alot of phone time with me. Every place we went had the reservation, ticket, tour, seats ready and instantly available. She booked a few extras I did not request that were very enjoyable. I was able to easily book some things advertised we thought would be too crowded over the Christmas break making the whole trip the best one ever. THANK YOU JULES- and Marianna as well.

One of the best experiences of my life, made possible by the incredibly talented and charismatic Daisy! This was well organized with all of the logistics taken care of for you while having the freedom to pick what activities interest you most. The group setting was fun and a nice bonding expensive of people from around the world. Some of the hostel stays were great, some were just ok, but all were clean and had the essentials.

Flights Included as Part of Your Small Group Tour

As an ATOL bonded tour operator, we can book flights on your behalf with any of the major airlines flying out of the UK… something many New Zealand tour operators don’t offer.

If you would like to book your flights through us, just let us know which route you would like to fly and in which class – Business, Premium Economy or Economy – and we’ll provide you with a quote as part of your small group holiday.

In most cases, you will not have to pay for your flights until your balance is due.

Stopovers in the Best Locations

Jetlag can definitely dampen the enjoyment of the first few days of your holiday, so we recommend adding a stopover on the way to New Zealand , even if you decided to fly straight home at the end of your trip.

The most popular destinations are the key hubs of Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

We can book excellent hotels in these locations and recommend tried and tested sightseeing activities, too.

Pre-Tour and Post Tour Arrangements

If you’d like to spend some time in New Zealand before your tour starts, we are able to arrange accommodation in your tour hotel to save you changing rooms. We can also organise your transfer from the airport.

Similarly, at the end of your holiday, extra nights can be added to your tour itinerary. More extensive arrangements are also possible, just get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Got a few questions about your planned trip?

The Buck Stops With Us!

All our small group trips are operated by us through our Hamilton Office under our brand, Pure Discoveries.

No third parties are involved which means if you have a problem, an issue to sort out or a question, we’re always on hand to provide the answer.

Small Group Means Small Group

The maximum number of travellers we take on a small group tour is sixteen, but in practice the average Pure Discoveries group size is eight to ten participants.

Comfortable Travel Close Up

Our coaches are very comfortable and well maintained with great legroom, headroom and panoramic windows so you can really take in the beauty of New Zealand.

On a small group tour, you’ll experience a wonderful mix of incredible scenery including golden sandy beaches, sparkling clear rivers and lakes, ice age glaciers, thermal hot springs, majestic fiords and ancient forests.

We think New Zealand should be experienced up close, so we always encourage you to get out of your seat and into the landscape to explore at every opportunity – with a local guide on hand to tell you all about it, too!

Good Company

In a small group, it’s easy to find common ground with fellow travellers and enjoy a variety of dinner table conversations.

We dispense with “coach tour” admin, like asking you to wear a name badge, we think good manners and good humour are more important than strict timekeeping.

Discovering New Zealand in this way offers potential for serendipitous surprises and a lot of fun.

Great Leaders, Expert Guides

New Zealanders are rightly proud of their country and aware that visitors have travelled a long way.

Kiwi’s are passionate about showing visitors the best of New Zealand. So not only are our hand-picked tour leaders safe drivers in all conditions, but they are also happy personalities, full of knowledge and enthusiasm, insights and practical advice.

At certain points on the tour, we meet up with a local guide to add his or her expertise to enhance your experience. These include Kiwis who are wildlife, eco, geothermal or Maori specialists with whom you can engage on a personal level and really engage with what New Zealand has to offer.

Flexible Schedules

With a small group, we can be more flexible with each day’s timetable, creating opportunities for surprise encounters and time for stops en route.

So, if someone spots a Takahe, we can stop for a photo and if it’s 90 degrees in the shade we can cool down at the beach before we hit the road again. It’s all about that New Zealand life, in every way!

Ready to plan the trip of a lifetime?

Combine Independent Travel with a Small Group Tour

Since we operate both independent tailored holidays and escorted group holidays, you can combine these to create your own unique tour of New Zealand and experience the best of both worlds.

Begin on North Island by joining our Koromiko Tour and arrive in Wellington to commence your own trip, or vice versa. Travel independently through North Island and then join our Mount Cook Lily tour of the South Island. Whatever works best for you.

Your Choice

Our tours include a choice of experiences in four key locations: the Bay of Islands , Rotorua , Abel Tasman National Park and Wanaka .

For example, if you are a Lord of the Rings fan and want to experience all things Middle Earth, you can visit Hobbiton from Rotorua while your partner marvels at the geothermal sights of Waimangu Thermal Valley – all these are included in the tour price.

In other locations, you’ll also have free time to enjoy optional experiences at your own cost, or just take the time to chill out and relax.

The choice is always yours.

You’re Sure of a Warm Welcome

Our smaller groups means we are not confined to staying at large mass-market hotels and we’re able to include a wonderful mix of accommodation .

Sometimes we choose a large city hotel because of its central location, but wherever possible, we opt for tried and tested smaller family-run properties with their own character so that you can enjoy some real Kiwi hospitality.

Guaranteed Departures

All our small group tour dates are guaranteed departures. So, whether we have half a dozen travellers or a full complement of passengers, you can rest assured you can make your international travel plans accordingly, without concerns as to whether your holiday will go ahead or not.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is each day’s drive?

It does vary. We like to get you out of the coach as much as possible – so even on the longer drives there will be frequent stops. An average daily drive would be 4 hours. There are longer drives, closer to five hours from Napier to Wellington, from Fox Glacier to Wanaka and from Mount Cook to Christchurch.

How can we do our washing on tour?

There are laundrettes in nearly all the accommodations where you’ll stay. All you need is plenty of 20c coins!

What are the advantages of having a tour guide?

One of the major benefits of having a tour guide when travelling around New Zealand is the insider knowledge they’re able to share with you. At Silver Fern Holidays , we work closely with hand-picked tour guides to ensure you’re going to be travelling with passionate Kiwi’s who are excited to share their beautiful country with you.

Because we travel in small groups, we’re able to offer more flexibility than larger tour groups. This means none of our tours are ever exactly the same, something our travellers absolutely love. Every experience will be completely unique to you and your group. If you’ve reached a destination a little early, your driver guide might show you their favourite local coffee shop, or one of New Zealand’s many hidden gems that the internet just won’t share with you.

A major stress when organising self-guided tours is needing to deal with admin like renting cars or buying train and bus tickets. You don’t need to worry about any of this when joining our small group tour. Our tour guides are also experienced drivers, so you can just sit back, relax and soak up the scenery while they take you where you need to go.

Is it better to travel alone or in a group?

What we have found during our years organising tours and tailor-made holidays in New Zealand, is that there’s no ‘better’ way to travel. It will just come down to how you enjoy travelling.

There are however a number of advantages to travelling in a group . Travelling in a group allows you to experience New Zealand with other like-minded travellers. You can also enjoy the experience of one of our travel guides and see New Zealand through a local’s eyes. We also purposefully keep our groups small so you’ll still have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and have time on your own to enjoy the sights.

On the other hand, travelling alone can give you more freedom to curate your own holiday schedule. This means if you plan to visit somewhere like Hawkes Bay and decide you need longer to see it all, you can! If you feel that you’d prefer to travel alone, we can help you build your perfect itinerary filled with unforgettable New Zealand experiences .

What are the different roles of a tour guide?

A tour guide’s main job is to ensure that you have an incredible time exploring New Zealand. Of course, it takes a lot of work behind the scenes to make this happen!

Our driver guides will transport you in one of our 16-seater Pure Discoveries vehicles. Where possible, we take the roads less-travelled so you can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery.

Our guides will ensure you keep to your itinerary so you’re able to see everything you’re meant to, and maybe even some hidden gems along the way!

Your driver won’t just take you from A to B, that’s not the Silver Fern way! All of our drivers are hand-picked by us and love sharing their beautiful islands with travellers. As you travel, our drivers will be able to tell you local stories, show you their favourite places, and importantly, give you a true taste of Kiwi humour.

Are tour groups worth it?

Yes! If you’re looking to make friends with other passionate travellers, tour groups are a great way to meet and explore with like-minded people.

That’s not to say you need to be a social butterfly to enjoy a group journey as all of our small group tours have a maximum of 16 travellers per group. This means you can still have an intimate travel experience with time to explore the sights by yourself.

A tour group ensures you have an itinerary that has been planned by expert travel guides to get the most out of your time in New Zealand. All of our drivers have experience sharing their beautiful islands with travellers and can offer a unique, local perspective you can’t utilise when travelling solo.

Can you see New Zealand in 2 weeks?

To fully explore both islands, we would recommend longer than 14 days. New Zealand is filled with beautiful sights and rich culture. The North Island is home to the country’s vibrant capital Wellington and the beautiful port city of Auckland . The South Island is a popular destination for thrill seekers with the adventure capital Queenstown , but there’s also Dunedin with its unforgettable nature and wildlife.

This means there is a lot to see, especially for such a small country! Our 23 day Kauri small group tour is perfect for taking you through the snow-capped alps, tropical rainforests and everything in between. This is a wonderful tour to learn about the history of New Zealand, which the Maori call Aotearoa.

We appreciate that time and budgets can be limited though. This is why our passionate team have created shorter tours that still allow you to see New Zealand’s plentiful sights on a tighter schedule. Our shorter small group tours focus on either the North or South Island so that you don’t have to rush and can fully enjoy each place you visit.

The Koromiko 11 day tour is our shortest, focusing on the stunning sights of the North Island from the Bay of Islands down to Wellington. Our 14 day Mount Cook Lily tour shows you some of New Zealand’s most awe inspiring sights such as the Fiordland, the majestic Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers and, of course, the incredible Mount Cook.

If you’re struggling to decide which island to visit, get in touch with a member of our team and we’ll be happy to talk through your travel needs. Whichever group journey you choose, we’re sure you’ll fall in love.

Wake up to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach, cross New Zealand’s main divide, traverse the stunning Canterbury High Country and cross the plains into the ‘Garden City’ of Christchurch.

Highlights include the Otira Viaduct, a spectacular cantilevered road through towering mountains to Arthur’s Pass National Park one of the best places in the country to see the hilarious antics of our alpine parrot, the Kea. Stretch your legs in the beech forests at Arthur’s Pass National Park and again at the massive limestone rocks at Castle Hill before we reach Christchurch in the late afternoon. We’ll say our goodbyes with drop offs at Christchurch Airport or your city accommodation.
