10/20/2023 Shinedown @ Ball Arena w/ Papa Roach & Spiritbox

After two in a half years and over two hundred shows, Shinedown’s Revolutions Live Tour featuring Papa Roach and Spiritbox finally came to an end this Friday night, here in the one and only Denver, CO, at the Ball Arena, formerly known as the Pepsi Center. The last leg of their tour dated between Sep 3rd-Oct 20th, 2023, and made its loop around the entire United States hitting twenty-five in total.

Talking to fans, it’s arguable that Friday’s show could easily win show of the year. All night the energy was carried from one band to the next as the night went on. The concert was nothing short of a good old classic Rock reunion, definitely a top performance. From the moment the first band Spiritbox came on, I knew we were in for a night of great music and electrifying energy. Sadly, we arrived right as they were jumping on stage and weren’t able to secure any shots. Nonetheless, I assure you Spiritbox is not a band to sleep on. With beautiful vocals from the lead singer Courtney LaPlante  played over some soul-crushing heavy metal music performed by her husband Michael Stringer on guitar along with band mates Josh Gilbert on bass and Zen Rose on the drums. The group hit #1 on both the U.S. and Canadian Rock Billboard charts. Check out their 2020 runaway success single, “Holy Roller” down below.

As we marched back to the front of the stage the crowd was buzzing with anticipation, and for good reason…

Papa Roach , the iconic rock band known for their electrifying performances and hard-hitting anthems, was about to take the stage. The atmosphere was charged with excitement, and yet again it was clear that this night was going to be one for the books. Papa Roach didn’t just stick to their hits. As the night went on they treated the audience to some of their newer material, which was cool to see as it’s clear that their creativity and passion for music has not altered over the years. For me, one of the highlights of the night and a truly unforgettable moment that showcased the band’s ability to connect with their fans on a deep, emotional level was when they played “Scars.” The emotional intensity of this song, combined with Shaddix’s captivating stage presence, blew me away. In the early 2000s I found myself listening to this song on repeat, and to finally hear it performed live alongside thousands of others singing along was just simply badass. Now that some heartstrings were pulled, it was time to back the vibe of the night with some heavier tracks. Papa Roach’s performance starring Jacoby Shaddix (vocals), Jerry Horton (guitar), Tobin Esperance (bass), and Tony Palermo (drums)   was a testament to their talent and the timeless appeal of their music.

As headlining act Shinedown prepared to take the stage, they greeted us with a cool mini intro video of their time while on tour during the past couple of years that showcased all the love and joy they’ve spread across the nation along their way to Denver. As the video came to an end, the two massive LED screens that projected the video split in two as the four band members Brent Smith (vocals), Zach Myers (guitar), Eric Bass (bass/piano), and Barry Kerch (drums) made their grand entrance. With a red carpet feeling, they marched down the tongue of the stage as they were greeted by a packed house chanting and screaming their names. We’ve posted the intro video below for you to check out as well.

Shinedown took the stage with an unparalleled enthusiasm that was infectious, immediately igniting a fire within the crowd as Kerch smashed the drums kicking off their set with the track “Diamond Eyes”. Their performance was a masterclass in rock showmanship, with every member of the band displaying a true passion for the craft. Smith insisted we all buckle as they have a night full of excitement, bouncing back and forth between their older and newer songs. Both anthems, that have stood the test of time alongside new material that breathed new life into the genre.

Smith’s voice was a force to be reckoned with, hitting high notes with ease and pouring raw emotion into every lyric. Followed by guitar/bass solos that were nothing short of legendary, showcasing how Rock’n Roll truly keeps you young. Production values of the concert were top-notch, as the show was actually filmed with cameras flying all over capturing the tour’s final night. Can’t wait to see what they come up with at the end… Definitely going to have to rewatch this one. I believe not one but two Guinness World Records were achieved during the show as Shinedown became the first band to officially have a flying piano during their set! Followed but an ungodly amount of Pyrotechnics that were shot off throughout their entire set. The combination of striking visuals and electrifying tunes created an immersive experience that had the entire crowd singing, dancing, and throwing their fists in the air. As they approached the end of the show, the band had a relatable moment with Papa Roach’s performances during “Scars”. They took a moment to gather everyone’s attention as they hosted a group sing-along to their famous cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s   “Simple Man”. I know these aren’t their main heavier songs… but man oh man, do they hit the heart. These types of songs can remind us all why we fell in love with this genre in the first place, the raw energy and unapologetic passion that can only be found in the world of rock. The band’s performance was a testament to their talent and dedication over their lengthy career. Delivering a high-energy, yet emotionally charged show that left no doubt they’re loved by so many and will go down in the history of Rock. Music is very much alive, and it’s thanks to performances like these that it’s flame continues to burn brightly.

Speaking with  Loudwire Nights radio host Chuck Armstrong last month, Shinedown's Brent Smith touched on the group's mindset when it comes to delivering a top-notch live performance.

"Anybody that knows Shinedown knows that we have one boss in this band, and it just happens to be everybody in the audience. We are never going to phone it in and we are always going to give them our 100-percent best," the singer beamed.

"Obviously you're not going to be able to make everybody happy," Smith acknowledged, "but the way we look at it is we see what is relevant at the time, we see where we are in our album cycle for the album we're promoting and we do our best to draw in the best parts of the band. Some nights you might get deeper cuts from us, some nights it may be all No. 1s. During festivals or something like that, it's all killer, no filler. So really, it just depends on the market, on the city, on the country and kind of how we feel."

Papa Roach are coming to Kill The Noise' at Fillmore Auditorium on Sunday 6th March 2022 featuring very special guests Hollywood Undead and Bad Wolves. Kill The Noise’? Hmm, me thinks they come to MAKE SOME NOISE!!! Marking the band's first headlining tour in three years, this is going to be an absolute bug stomping good time! The band have teased 3 new tracks from their forthcoming new album, which is expected for release early next year, with the title track named, “Kill The Noise. Get yourself some tickets now for some brand-new bug stomping music, live! So, you can hear the squishes extra good.

"We're really excited to be back on the road, joining up again with Hollywood Undead and Bad Wolves," Papa Roach shared. "Both bands bring deep catalogs and killer live shows. It'll be a non-stop Rock N Roll thrill ride start to finish."

Papa Roach celebrated an extra fruitful year in 2021, after celebrating the 20th anniversary of their landmark album INFEST in 2020. They followed it with regular new releases this year, the iconic The first track released to radio, "Kill The Noise", just completed a 4-week run at number 1 on the Mainstream Rock Charts. This follows "The Ending" which peaked at no. 1 earlier this year, and giving Papa Roach their 9th number 1 single and mind-blowing 20th Top 5 single to date. 2021 also marked the band's third Grammy nomination for the remix of "Born For Greatness" by Spencer Bastian aka CYMEK.

But all is not sweet paradise for Papa Roach, frontman Jacoby Shaddix has admitted the band went through "hell and heaven" making their upcoming album, "and we aired some grievances in the process and really got through some stuff together and came out on the other side of the process of this record feeling like, 'Man, we just went through hell and heaven to make this record. We've got something special. It's just really exciting."

John Wenzel

“When Bruce Springsteen came in last spring, he spent over an hour and a half here, then invited us all to his concert at (Ball Arena),” said Steve Weil, the third-generation owner of the Western wear manufacturer. “He couldn’t have been nicer. There was no celebrity mentality at all, just a guy shopping for shirts.

There have also been some divas,” he added, “who I won’t name.”

Famous or no, the people who visit Rockmount’s retail flagship, at 1626 Wazee St. in Lower Downtown, are just the tip of the spur in a decades-spanning ride atop the Western-wear world. The company continues to thrive, Weil said, because it takes chances and is always pushing new designs, from marijuana-leaf embroidery to kid’s wear and bold, modern prints.

Founded in 1946 by Steve’s grandfather Jack A. Weil, Rockmount’s intricate, snap-button Western shirts have shown up on the backs of Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, and every member of The Beatles. Lately, it’s been Miley Cyrus, Maren Morris, Jack White and John Legend.

They help constantly refresh the brand’s high-end appeal, Weil said, even though Rockmount has always been focused on clothes for regular folks, including hats, jackets, bolo ties, purses, buckles and even flasks. Its long- and short-sleeve shirts cost an average of $110 , which may seem steep until you consider the craftsmanship and longevity, Weil said. You can also pick up a quality cowboy hat for $30.

The allure of Rockmount has led to one-off, custom collaborations with the Grateful Dead, The Avett Brothers, British rockers Alt-J, and Denver’s own Nathaniel Rateliff, as well as the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. Former Denver mayor, Colorado governor and now-U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper is an old friend of the Weil family.

On the second level of the store, where Weil keeps an open-air office, a ramshackle mini-museum that sports a collection of belt buckles alongside examples of the fame Rockmount has long enjoyed outside the music world.

James Dean and Marilyn Monroe wore Rockmount. So have Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey. Salvador Dali? Him, too .

Rockmount’s rustic, kaleidoscopic designs popped up in last year’s blockbuster “Barbie” movie, in a “Saturday Night Live” sketch, and in dozens of other big- and small-screen titles. John Travolta gave Rockmount and Western wear a lift in 1980’s “Urban Cowboy.” A shirt in the mini-museum is the same style as the one worn by Heath Ledger in the Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain.” The original sold for $101,000 at auction, Weil said.

“(Director) Ang Lee personally requested Rockmount for the movie,” Weil remembered. “We got one hate letter, because it was a movie about gay cowboys. I thought (the movie) was a work of art. … But we get so few complaints that I respond to them personally.”

Weil’s confidence has been forged over four decades, having joined the family business in 1981, following the steps of his grandfather and father, Jack B. Weil. The Denver store, which opened in 2005, is the heart of the globe-spanning brand with manufacturing operations in the U.S. and India. Rockmount has been fortunate to have the celebs, film-costumers and other high-profile names come to them, as opposed to Rockmount reaching out for publicity.

“A lot of companies spend money on product placement and advertising, but we do it very organically,” Weil said. “We do what we do, and people come to us.”

Still, the bulk of its sales are wholesale — an approach that the store has emphasized since the pandemic disrupted its business. Rockmount has lately had trouble meeting demand, Weil said, although production is beginning to catch up. With more than 100 different designs available, there’s no single best-seller.

“The three legs to the stool are wholesale, the web and our flagship store,” said Weil, as his chief of security, a 7-year-old yellow Lab named Humboldt, sidled up on the store’s main level. “But we love that (variety), and this is kind of why we’re still here. We’ve somehow found this niche. We try to be different than The Gap. We’re not about widgets.”

Weil declined to say how much revenue Rockmount sees annually, but the fact that the store seems full seven days a week, from morning to afternoon, hints at its popularity. On a recent day, conventioneers and tourists speaking a variety of languages milled about its displays as Western-dressed staffers offered help.

There’s competition, of course. The estimated $75 million annual global sales in Western wear in 2020 are projected to hit $137 million by 2031, according to Allied Market Research . Iconic U.S. cowboy fashion is popular everywhere, as Rockmount learned when it sued the luxury brand Coach in 2017 for allegedly stealing the design for its Atomic Cowboy shirt.

“This is not the first time our intellectual property has been stolen,” Weil told The Denver Post at the time . “I tried to start out thinking the best of people, but sadly many in the apparel business have no integrity.”

Rockmount will surely be around another 100 years, Weil said, having woven itself into the fabric of the Western wear world. Whether simple or flamboyant, the shirts are meant to appeal to everyone.

“We get asked by the Academy Awards every year, ‘Would you like to donate product for our gift bags?,’ ” Weil said. “No! We don’t give free stuff to rich people. It’s meaningless if you give something away or pay them to wear it. Our customers wear it by choice.”

Broncos hope ‘crazy’ additions on defensive front will be a boon against the run

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The steady wind at Broncos OTA practice on Tuesday couldn’t stifle Malcolm Roach ’s voice.

As soon as competitive portions of the session began, Roach, the 25-year-old defensive lineman who joined Denver as a free agent in March, turned up the volume. It’s been a common scene during his first offseason with the Broncos. Whether he is pumping up defensive teammates after a tipped ball or quarterback pressure, jawing with offensive players or throwing playful haymakers at his current and college teammate, Lil’Jordan Humphrey , during a water break, Roach has been impossible to miss.

And that doesn’t only extend to how the 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive lineman carries himself in practice.

“He’s crazy. He’s bats–t crazy, man,” Broncos safety P.J. Locke said of Roach. Locke was also his teammate at the University of Texas. “He’s always going to be the guy who is in the locker room playing the music loud as hell, early in the morning. He’s going to be loud out here and bring the energy every single time. That’s his role and he embraces it. Man, we need it.”

After evaluating the performance of their defense in 2023, the Broncos reasoned they could use a little more crazy along the defensive line. A little more mean. A little more nasty. When he arrived at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, general manager George Paton identified better run defense as one of the team’s top priorities — perhaps just behind the whole stopping-the-quarterback-carousel thing. The Broncos were able to climb out of an early hole last season and improve to 6-5, but they scuttled to a 2-4 finish, in part, because they never could plug one of the league’s leakiest run defenses. It was an Achilles’ heel that was barking by December and January.

The Broncos allowed an NFL-worst 5 yards per carry last season. They were 28th in TruMedia’s defensive rush success metric. Denver lacked depth behind frontline players D.J. Jones and Zach Allen , and it became painfully obvious as teams put the squeeze on the Broncos late in games.

Enter Roach and John Franklin-Myers , who was acquired from the Jets in a trade during the draft. They represent immediate upgrades to rotation spots alongside Jones and Allen, evidenced by both players’ consistent production over the past few seasons. Roach, for example, had the best run-stop rate among NFL interior linemen in 2023 at 17.4 percent, according to Pro Football Focus. He was credited with 23 run stops overall through PFF’s formula .

“I think he loves playing. He really does,” said Broncos coach Sean Payton, who first coached Roach in New Orleans after the Saints signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2020. “He’s effective as a player and it’s kind of contagious. He’s a really good teammate and someone that can play multiple positions. There are certain guys that are glue guys in a locker room, and he’s one of those guys.”

The Broncos were seeking attitude as much as aptitude when looking for new additions to the defensive front. When the Broncos studied Franklin-Myers’ tape with the Jets , where he played the last four seasons, the relentlessness of his play style stuck out as much as his consistent production against both the run and pass. It’s a brand the 27-year-old has established since entering the league as a fourth-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2019.

“I play with an effort and physicality a lot of people aren’t willing to match,” Franklin-Myers said. “It’s just how I am and how I was designed. The challenge is to come here and continue to do that. I’m gonna do that because that’s just how I’m built.”

After playing in a 4-3 front with the Jets, Franklin-Myers said he had some initial questions about how he would be used in defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s 3-4 scheme. But once he had a conversation with Joseph and other members of Denver’s staff — senior defensive assistant Joe Vitt was on the Jets’ staff during the defensive lineman’s first season there in 2020, providing a familiar sounding board — he quickly became comfortable with the impending change. It helped, too, that Franklin-Myers’ close friend and former Jets teammate, Sheldon Rankins , previously played five seasons with Payton in New Orleans and “had nothing bad to say” about the experience.

“It was a little different because you don’t know how someone is going to play you,” Franklin-Myers said of being traded to Denver. “But I talked to them and understood what the assignment was, and I was on board. I’m locked in. It’s a chance to grow as a person, as a football player and as a teammate. Shoot, I can’t pass that up.”

Having a fellow newcomer on the defensive line in Roach has also been a welcome development for Franklin-Myers. The two have trained together in the past and believe their talents and play styles will mesh well.

“I’m familiar with him, a guy I have a lot of respect for in the run game and in the pass game,” Franklin-Myers said. “He’s a guy who brings the energy, and you’ve got to be thankful for that.”

Broncos head into 2024 with optimism about secondary — and plenty of questions

The non-contact nature of OTAs is not an ideal time to cast judgment on interior players on either side of the ball. Payton noted that much of Franklin-Myers’ consistent production in New York — at least three sacks, 13 quarterback hits and a 13 percent pressure rate in the last four seasons — was built on “power rush, bull rush” moves that can’t be properly demonstrated without pads. In other words, Denver won’t know how much impact the offseason addition of some “crazy” on the defensive line will have until it’s time to hit.

But the Broncos can already hear it, from the moment Roach steps into the locker room in the morning. And that’s a good place to start.

Here are some observations from the Broncos’ OTA practice Tuesday:

Sutton remains absent

Courtland Sutton has not participated in any part of Denver’s offseason program. All of the program to this point, it bears repeating, has been voluntary, but it represents a departure from Sutton’s approach in previous seasons. The reason for his absence is not a secret.

“It’s not that he didn’t like our new uniforms,” Payton mused.

Sutton, rather, is in search of a reworked contract. He has only $2 million in guaranteed money on a deal — a four-year, $61 million extension signed in 2021 — that still has two years and as much as $26.5 million remaining. Sutton is coming off a career-best 10-touchdown season and is looking for an adjustment that would bring more guarantees.

What Sean Payton's promise of 'heavy competition' means for Broncos' skill players

The first inflection point for Sutton and the Broncos comes with next week’s minicamp, the first mandatory part of the offseason program. Payton said he expects to see Sutton, who has been working out on his own in Florida this offseason, back in Denver next week.

“Yes, I think he’ll be here for minicamp. I mean, it’s mandatory,” Payton said. “When I’ve been asked about Courtland — and I’m going to say this — I just know his work ethic. I know the player. There’s a list of things that race through your mind this time in the offseason as a head coach. And, respectfully, when I say this to him, because he and I have talked, I think that will work itself out. I think he’ll be here, yes, but I don’t know that for sure.”

The learning curve for Wilson

The Broncos have shuffled their three quarterbacks — Bo Nix , Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson — through reps with the first-team offense throughout OTAs. During the first two practices that were open for media viewing, Nix, the rookie first-round pick, piloted the offense. On Tuesday, it was Wilson’s turn, and his run with the top unit — and against the top defense — illustrated the learning curve he faces while being incorporated into his third different offensive scheme in as many seasons.

During an 11-on-11 period Tuesday, the 24-year-old acquired in a trade with the Jets in April, threw off his back foot while retreating from pressure, and was intercepted by Locke, the veteran safety. Whether Wilson didn’t recognize the blitzing pressure, missed a read, or simply felt compelled to make a play, the play resulted in a throw that didn’t need to happen.

papa roach tour denver

It certainly wasn’t a moment that produced panic. It’s early in June. Wilson has fewer than 10 practices with the Broncos. But it’s a reminder that there is a learning curve that will come attached to this change for Wilson, who has some habits he needs to break regardless of the scheme in which he’s playing. But he has also flashed the arm talent that helps make sense of why Payton and the Broncos wanted to take on the 2021 No. 2 draft pick as a quarterback project.

Can Zach Wilson begin a fruitful second act with Broncos? It starts in the huddle

“We just felt like, ‘Man, we’d love to work with this guy,'” Payton said. “It wasn’t too long ago we remembered grading him. Felt the investment was worth it relative to his skill set and his talent. So it took a while. We spent the better part of a month and a half working on that trade.”

Next week’s mandatory minicamp, which could offer a view of all three players taking a turn at the controls of the top unit, should offer a more complete look at where the quarterback puzzle stands heading into the team’s summer break.

Broncos' Locke Drops Expletive to Describe New DT Malcolm Roach

  • Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos divorced from and have spent the past half-decade trying to replace Derek Wolfe — that is, a brutish defensive lineman who terrorizes the trenches, physically and verbally. Someone whose mouth writes checks his behind can cash. A "dog," as Aqib Talib would call it .

The search may be over.

Meet Malcolm Roach.

“He’s batsh*t crazy, man," Broncos safety P.J. Locke described to reporters Tuesday. "He’s going to be loud out here and bring the energy every single time. That’s his role and he embraces it. We need it, for sure.”

Locke would know, having played alongside Roach for three years at Texas. The college mates are now reunited as pros in the Mile High City, and the latter is tasked with improving a Denver run defense that was largely catatonic last season, finishing 30th in the NFL.

Entering his age-26 campaign, Roach was signed by now-Broncos head coach Sean Payton's Saints in 2020 as an undrafted free agent. He's amassed 38 solo tackles, seven tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits, three pass deflections, and one interception across 41 career appearances, including five starts.

Roach (6-3, 290) was particularly effective against opposing ground games, posting the league's best run-stop rate (17.4%), according to Pro Football Focus . Such is the reason Payton lured him in this offseason on a two-year, $8 million contract .

One of the reasons, anyway.

“I think he loves playing. He really does," Payton said Tuesday. "He’s effective as a player, and it’s kind of contagious. He’s a really good teammate and someone that can play multiple positions. There are certain guys that are ‘glue’ guys in a locker room, and he’s one of those guys. He had to steal first base. He was an undrafted free agent. He wasn’t born on third base. He had to make it. He’s a guy that appreciates every day, and his teammates quickly—I talked to a few of the others guy that have been here, and very quickly he acclimated himself. I would say he endears himself to his teammates, and I think that’s a good trait.”

Together with fellow free-agent pickup Angelo Blackson and trade acquisition John Franklin-Myers, and incumbents Zach Allen and DJ Jones, the Broncos' defensive line should look much more formidable this fall.

At worst, Roach will be the first reserve off the bench. At best, he'll vault to starter.

At a constant, No. 97 is the unquestioned mouthpiece.
