5 best luxury cycling holiday operators

If you love luxury almost as much as you love cycling, then considering luxury cycling holidays for your next break has to be a no-brainer. Who says that those taking to two wheels have to rough it? Not InGamba, Butterfield and Robinson, DuVine, Trek Travel or Backroads – the five luxury bike tour companies featured here.

Wondering how we’ve picked these five? Well, over the years they’re the names we’ve most often heard talked about when friends and industry contacts have been talking about luxury cycling trips.

So if luxury is what you’re looking for, we hope this article helps. Below we compare and contrast what they offer, covering what they’re all about as well as practical matters like pricing, group sizes, accommodation, bike hire and where they go. Plus what to expect in terms of how hardcore the cycling actually is…

Have you travelled with these luxury cycling tour operators? Let us know your experience in the comments below!

This article is based on the information on each operator’s website. We’ve done our best to ensure our summary is accurate, but please double-check everything with the operator since the information on their website could be out of date or could have changed since we wrote the article. It’s even conceivable (heaven forbid!) that we may have made a mistake.

The companies are listed in alphabetical order.

Backroads offers the discerning cyclist adventure, activity and taking the road less travelled in over 50 countries worldwide.

Perhaps they can entice you to visit one of their more unusual destinations: is Vietnam, Montenegro, Tanzania, Jordan, Ecuador or Tahiti on your must-visit list?

Founded back in 1979, Backroads specialises in hiking, biking and adventure trips for those who love to explore. If you’re an active type who loves visiting places that are a little off the beaten (cycle) track, then Backroads could offer just what you’re looking for.

These are not your average luxury family cycling holidays, but Backroads does offer trips tailored for parents plus their children, teens or even adult kids. In addition to those aimed at couples, solo travellers and friends travelling together.

  • Where: Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, North America and the Pacific
  • Average group size: 16
  • Accommodation: Mostly premiere hotels offering luxury, charm and character
  • What’s included: All accommodation; most meals, snacks and drinks; bike, helmet and water bottle; experienced leaders; activities, transport costs and entry fees as stated; local gratuities, comprehensive travel planner
  • What’s not included: Flights, transfers, travel insurance, private room charges, Backroads guide gratuities, dinner during free evenings, optional extras
  • Bike hire: Custom-built titanium bikes, e-bikes or Cannondale pro carbon bikes. Tandems and e-bikes may also be available
  • Level of cycling: All levels of fitness are covered by the trips – some are more challenging than others

Butterfield & Robinson

Butterfield & Robinson go beyond bikes. Their trips include travel on foot, by boat or on safari. Whatever the mode of transport, slow travel is their mantra.

Founded in 1966, Butterfield & Robinson is a well-established tour operator that goes way beyond the usual luxury cycling holidays in France, Italy, Spain or the US. If you want to experience it, they can ensure you do it.

Options range from cycling holidays to cultural and wellness holidays or extended journeys and expeditions to taking a safari or a trip by sea. Top of the list, though, is luxury cycling tours of Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Here’s a taster of some of their itineraries. You can take an active cycling trip around the Adriatic Islands for eight days, or tour central Japan by e-bike for the same duration. Join a small group to explore Ireland on two wheels, take an e-bike around Morocco or combine a Rhine River cruise with cycling in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

If you want to take luxury cycling holidays in Europe at a more relaxed pace, Butterfield & Robinson might well be your best bet.

  • Where: Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America
  • Accommodation: Stylish hotels with a local, slow travel feel
  • What’s included: All accommodation; most meals, snacks and drinks; regular or e-bike and gear; expert guides; activities and entry fees as stated; local gratuities
  • What’s not included: Flights, transfers, travel insurance, Butterfield & Robinson guide gratuities, dinner during free evenings, optional extras
  • Bike hire: Regular or e-bikes included as per individual itinerary
  • Level of cycling: Slow travel – it’s all about moving at your own pace

DuVine is all about luxury bicycle tours with a focus on food, wine, local character and culture.

DuVine offers high end bike tours that showcase some of the world’s best cycling areas. Comfort plus challenge is the focus of their luxury bike trips. The company offers cycling holidays in Puglia, Switzerland, the French Alps, Zion, Rioja and Scotland, to name but a few destinations.

Food and wine regions are a speciality, and local character and culture the focus.

DuVine is all about seeing the world by bike. Not only at a surface level, but delving deeper beneath the skin of each destination. Whether it’s Sicily, Mallorca, the Champagne region or Holland, you’ll stay in accommodation and eat at restaurants that reflect the culture and cuisine of each location. Hotels are handpicked not only because they offer deluxe accommodation, but also because they give those staying there a genuine sense of place.

If you like to combine luxury with cycling and adventure, it’s worth taking a look at DuVine’s luxury cycling trips.

  • Level of cycling: Anything from relaxed to challenging. Options include hopping into the van for sections, or choosing between harder and easier routes

For the avid cyclist who is also looking for some luxury, InGamba’s trips will be of interest.

Their trips are led by former pros, soigneurs and mechanics. Some of their itineraries are pretty pacey.

InGamba offers guided cycling holidays as well as private tours with an itinerary to suit your interests. As with DuVine, the food and wine you’ll sample along the way are integral to the experience. It’s about providing you, the guest, with the best rooms, restaurants and routes that each place has to offer.

If taking luxury cycling tours in Spain, Italy, France or any of their other destinations appeals, InGamba offers private tours. These are for up to eight travellers, and can be chosen from their tour list. Alternatively, the InGamba team can tailor a tour just for you.

Another factor making InGambia stand out is the staff. Theirs have worked as soigneurs or mechanics with some leading cyclists, and even in some cases as pro cyclists themselves. For the professional touch, this cannot be beaten – and just imagine the tips you’ll be able to pick up!

  • Where: Arizona, Argentina, California, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain
  • Average group size: 11
  • Accommodation: Good quality hotels throughout
  • What’s included: All accommodation, meals, snacks and drinks; bike and gear; former cycling professionals as leaders; daily bike wash, laundry and massage
  • What’s not included: Flights, transfers, travel insurance, gratuities, optional extras
  • Bike hire: Pinarello Dogma F Disk with SRAM RED eTAP AXS
  • Level of cycling: Some are for serious, experienced cyclists only, so choose your trip carefully if you’re not up for a big challenge.

User Reviews

I just returned from the National Parks/Dalmatia tour in late August 2019 and it exceeded my expectations in pretty much everything!!! The views were just amazing, this is a beautiful country and they do a great job putting us on routes to safely see that beauty. If you have the extra time, do the National Park tour extension, the parks and riding are incredible! I went as a solo rider and met wonderful people from Australia & the US. The food was some of the best I've ever had in my life. As a gluten-free, pescatartian (fish only) I was a little worried about the food but this was the perfect trip for a fish lover and they even had GF bread at many of the locations. Petra said they focus on making sure the restaurants have great food and wine options, and they sure did!!! The courses were pretty hills and we had some more recreational riders and some pretty avid riders and all were accommodated. They have new Trek bikes that performed great. A couple riders had e-bikes to give a little assistance up some hills, so keep that in mind if you do not ride a whole lot and want a little extra help to keep it at a pleasant pace. I did a trip through Tuscany with Backroads last year and loved it so I was a little worried about going on a tour with a different company, but I tell you what, I'd go with Cycling Croatia over Backroads in a heartbeat for any trip! The value for the money is much more reasonable and the hotels, food, cycling, support on the course, guides and cultural experiences cannot be beat with Cycling Croatia. Thank you to Petra, Kruno, Mario & Veki for an unforgettable trip!!  Andi Comfort , Minneapolis, MN
What a fabulous trip! This company is absolutely first rate. Krunoslav and Petra, who not only own the company, but accompany you on the tour, are engaging, knowledgeable, and amazingly organized. The hotels, the food, and the routes which were chosen were all excellent. We both ride electric bikes at our home in San Diego, and they provided us with superb electric bikes. Better than the ones we own. The electric bikes allowed us to arrive at our destination after doing quite a few hills, with big smiles on our faces. I strongly recommend that you spend two extra days before the trip in Split, and two extra days at the end of the trip in the Dubrovnik. Both are Fascinating beautiful cities. Thank you Krunoslav and Petra for a remarkable week in lovely Croatia......probably the best organized bike trip we've ever done!! Cheers Paul and Nelly Paul Barry and Nelly Dean, San Diego, California
First of all, Croatia is an extraordinary place to visit and to bicycle. The scenery is amazing, the history deep and fascinating, and the food fresh, delicious, and healthy. The views from the ridges of the Dalmatian islands were exceptional. Kruno and Petra provided a wonderful mix of thoughtful bike routes, extra features, and fine dining. They were supportive of all levels of biking, including ambitious road-bikers and slower tourers. They provided van support whenever needed, and they and their team quickly attended to any needed bike adjustments. All bike equipment was in excellent condition. Once Petra knew that one of us was keenly interested in horticulture she was quick to provide as much information as possible. All meals were included, as were frequent wine tastings, a visit to an olive-oil museum, and an oyster tasting at a cultivated-oyster farm. Two of the meals were very special, in that they had connections to organic farming and gardening and were prepared by dedicated artisans in their homes. The hotels were all excellent and ranged from accommodations within the Diocletian Palace in Split to beach resorts to a luxurious facility overhanging Dubrovnik.Because of the personal attention, the inclusion of all the meals, and the choices of hotels and restaurants, this was not only a spectacular tour but also an extraordinary value. I would recommend Cycling Croatia with Kruno and Petra to anyone. Mark Schlawin, U.S.A.
We just returned home after the 10 day/9 night Dalmatia and National Parks tour, with an extra (independent) day in Zagreb and Dubrovnik that Kruno helped arrange. I won't bore you with all the details of our trip - just assure you that you can't go wrong signing up for this one. Croatia is stunning anyways - I quickly adopted #allbeautifulallthetime when posting photos. The tour itself was top notch also. We've never been on a premium Butterfield & Robinson tour, but extended family in our group had. They felt 80-90% of the Cycling Croatia tour was superior to the level of accommodations/meals/support on the B&R tour - at a fraction of the price. (And none of this CC tour was substandard.) Bottom line: great country, great value, great itinerary, great guides, great food, great wine. Highly recommended. Scott Ryser, U.S.A.
Dalmatia and National Parks Tour We took this tour with Kruno and his team in early October 2016. If you have time, we'd highly recommend the National parks addition to the Dalmatia Tour - they really have to be seen to be believed and the descent overlooking Pag Island was one of the highlights of our trip. As with all the other reviews, we were blown away by the scenery: rugged mountains; crystal clear waters that you could see through forever; Plitvice Lakes (extraordinary - no photo can really do it justice); the islands, with their variations; and of course the cities with the Dioletician Palace in Split and the walled city of Dubrovnik. From the pick up at the airport to final arrival in Dubrovnik, everything was taken care of. It was great to know we were in such safe hands. Kruno and his team (Mario and the others) were all terrific: nothing was too much trouble. The food was fabulous with lots of traditional fare at lunch and great evening meals in unusual locations, rather than the standard restaurant fare you might expect. As they say in Australia "do yourself a favor!" And book this trip! Gillian Harrex, Australia
We toured with Cycling Croatia in July 14, our family of 4 (inc sons aged 19 & 16) was a mixture of different abilities and fitness levels; it was one of the best holidays we've ever had. Kruno and Marko are exceptional hosts; they took real care, providing all the support we needed (and some needed more than others!) but also gave us space when needed. They were knowledgable, informative, helpful, patient, friendly (and occasionally hilarious) The holiday itself was very well organised, the cycling was challenging enough for one very keen cyclist in our group, and enjoyable for everyone thanks to the great support for those who didn't want so much of a challenge. Croatia was wonderful - what a beautiful country - and we felt that Cycling Croatia had really made an effort to show us the true spirit of the country with some fantastic visits to local enterprises, where we sampled many Croatian delights! Also, the route followed some roads we would never have found ourselves, amazing scenery to rival the Amalfi Coast (but much, much quieter), and beautiful bays with wonderful swimming that it seemed only Croatians knew about. The accommodation was of mixed quality - there were a couple of amusingly 'quirky' hotels (and I should mention that one of these isn't on the standard list for this tour - our tour was tailored to our own needs with a couple of extra nights) - but all were in great locations, and didn't diminish the overall quality of the tour/holiday. A couple of the hotels were exceptionally good. In summary: we ate, drank (quite a lot - Zivjeli!), cycled, sweated, and laughed all the way around beautiful Southern Dalmatia in great company. It was an outstanding holiday. We look forward to cycling with them again in future. Alison Lawson, Edinburgh, Scotland
We cycled with Kruno and his team from June 13-19, it was our first cycling holidays. I usually go to all inclusive resorts and go for daily excursions, but with Cycling Croatia, the vacation is the excursion. Yes you'll likely be tired at first, but it's a good tired and you'll be rewarded with excellent food and company each day. By the end of the week, I felt like a million bucks. Also, I can't say enough about the professionalism of Krunos and his team. The are extremely friendly, always prepared and will bend over backwards for their guest. The bikes were brand new shinny trek 7.4 hybrids or trek road bikes (not sure what model) but also new. My wife and I both started with a road bikes, but quickly discovered using hybrids was the way to go. Not used to road bikes, Kruno traded my bike for the hybrid he was using half-way during the first ride. After coming into a curb too hard, the boys repaired my flat tire like a nascar pit crew. Looking at the daily distances, we initially believed that we would tour for only half-days and quickly realized that the daily rides are actually meant to fill out the day (but with breaks to visit wineries, an olive oil factory, oyster and mussels tasting, etc). Dinners were always filled with good conversation (group dinners every night except for one evening), the food was good to excellent and wine (or the drink of your choice) was included most nights. Marco with his interesting history lessons will take you back in time and teach you (in an amusing way) about Croatian history. I guess my only complaint was disbanding our group on the last day. Five stars for this class act company!!!!  Julie and Pascal, Otawa, Canada
My wife and I have recently returned from the Dalmatia Cycling trip, and quite simply, it was the best holiday we have had in years. The coastal scenery is stunning, the food and drink are excellent, and the trip itself is very well planned and organised by Kruno and Petra. They really were the perfect hosts, with Petra taking care of you on the bike, and Kruno following closely in his van should you need any help. The help extended to more water, ice, fruit, snacks, and if you wanted a rest, putting your bike on the roof rack and helping you into the van. Spot on. No stress, no pressure to keep up with the group, just do your own thing knowing that help is never far away. So, the same as other trips then? Not really. The difference on this trip was the emphasis that both Kruno and Petra paid to make sure everything ran smoothly and that you had a really enjoyable time. Nothing is too much trouble, and you see and do things that most tourists to Croatia will never experience. The oyster farm for instance, plus the meal with the local family on Korcula was epic. I have never seen so much meat placed in front of a small group of people. We did our best, but we were never going to finish it off. For me personally though, it was the small things that made this an 11/10 trip as opposed to simply 10/10. For instance, there are 3 winery visits on the itinerary, but whilst my wife loves the grape, I prefer a cold lager. At dinner on the first evening, Kruno took note of this, and when we were sitting in front of a table of food at the first winery, and everyone was starting to sample their first wine, lo and behold, Kruno had popped to the van and returned with 2 ice cold bottles of beer for me. To say that was appreciated was an understatement, and at that moment in time, I would have given the trip a 12/10. Needless to say, that pattern continued at subsequent winery stops, plus the visit to the oyster farm. A small detail I know, but it's things like that that really do make the difference. So, would we recommend the trip? Absolutely. Would we return to Croatia for another cycling trip? No doubt about it, and have already pencilled in a week next year, of course with Cycling Croatia, only this time on their trip further north.  To conclude, a top trip, with top hosts, and I cannot recommend both Croatia and Cycling Croatia enough.  Graham & Beryl Carney , South Yorkshire, UK
We were 4 South Africans that joined the Dalmatia tour in August. In total we were 10 riders in the tour. Previously we were on self-organized cycling tours and never joined a formal tour. This tour exceeded our biggest expectations. A 100% overall point for satisfaction is a huge understatement! Kruno and Petra, the company owners, were our tour guides. They were extremely professional, friendly, very helpful, caring and informative. They were the best hosts any tour can dream of. They went the extra mile to help and accommodate all the individual needs. The meet and greet evening was great with the group. We had a great dinner together and our beautiful cycle shirts were handed to everyone. Kruno briefed us in detail about the first day and had everyone at ease and very excited. We had very good bicycles , helmets, water bottles and bags for small stuff on the bicycle – all tagged with your name. Small bags with personal belongings were transported in the backup van. Kruno drove the backup van and Petra joined us on the bicycles. Every morning we were briefed about the route and the plans for the day. We also received a detailed map and kilometre markings for each day. During the day we were entertained with lots of fruit, water, energy bars, ice etc. The backup van was always in the nearby distance. Accommodation (hotels) was excellent with great breakfast served and all were centrally located. The logistics (luggage, bikes, dinners etc.) was outstanding and Kruno was key in this success.  Kruno and Petra introduced us to Croatian food, wine and culture. We visited several wine cellars for wine tasting and delicious snacks. The several flavours of grappa were fantastic!! We also visited an ancient olive farm – again wine and snacks were served. The ferry to a private island to enjoy the fresh oysters and mussels was one of the many highlights!! We cycled about 50 km a day. The routes are well selected by Kruno and Petra. Croatia is really the most beautiful country we visited - especially the Adriatic Sea and little villages and harbours. The cameradie between the group members were fantastic. The rest of our group was 5 ladies from Denver and a travel writer. We had good laughs and motivated each other.  We recommend this tour as a “must do”. It is absolute worth every pound. Everything is perfectly organized, the Dalmations are BEAUTIFUL and the guides SUPERB – just register for the tour, sit back on your bike, relax and enjoy every moment!!! Jan, Anna-Mari, Marina and Dimmie, South Africa

Trekking & Walking

Why trek? Because the world's most spectacular wilderness regions can only be reached on foot | Lachlan Gardiner

Explore the world with your own two feet by embarking on a trekking or walking tour with World Expeditions.

There are a million ways to travel, but few resonate in the way that trekking does. Get back to nature, challenge yourself and enter landscapes well beyond our urban environments. Picture yourself enjoying a spontaneous moment as you smile back at a nomadic mountain lady, snack by a rushing stream, follow winding paths that weave through the mountains, and scale rugged and rocky terrain in search of the perfect sunrise. In a nutshell, a trekking trip is all about embracing unique moments, incredible landscapes and new cultures in some of the most isolated parts of the world.

Our trekking & hiking adventures take you to some of the world’s most remote and beautiful locations, with many of our treks beginning where everyone elses treks end.

With some of the most off-the-beaten-track trekking opportunities in the world, you can choose from a range of introductory treks to challenging treks designed to bring you closer to the culture and wilderness of a country. Our responsible travel guidelines have been developed to ensure our trekkers travel with minimal impact on the culture, environment and community, saving the beauty of this world for future generations. Whether it’s camping in semi-permanent campsites to discourage logging in the Himalayas, to hiring local guides, porters and cooks, your presence on one of our trekking trips means that you are helping the local community grow and develop both economically and environmentally.

Best of all, unlike many other trekking providers, our trip prices include the cost of accommodation, food, and transport so there won’t be any surprise hidden expenses while you’re on your trek.

Trekking is a hugely rewarding experience where you can gain access to places where there are no roads, experience unspoilt wilderness and isolated villages and get up close to the highest peaks on Earth. While our experienced and passionate local staff are trained in wilderness first aid and supported with hearty meals, protective clothing and insurance, our trekking solutions responsibly manage waste and ensure we are not depleting natural resources. Inclusions & Equipment

Discovery & Cruising

These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery and cruises involve little or no extended activity. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms. These adventures do not go above 2500m and rarely involve camping.

Adventure Touring

These adventure tours sometimes involve travel at high altitude (rarely exceeding 4000m, except on certain trips in Tibet, Peru and India) and may visit remote areas of the world where facilities are often basic. Many of these trips sometimes involve some camping or basic lodging. These adventure tours will often involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity.

Introductory

Up to 5 or 6 hours a day at a slow but steady pace

Introductory to Moderate

Introductory walks with several moderate stages

Up to 5-7 hours a day at a steady pace. Treks will involve carrying a day pack and trail conditions will vary between well-defined to rough trails

Moderate walks with challenging stages

Challenging

Often in remote areas in variable, adverse weather conditions, for up to 8 to 10 hours+ a day, possibly more. Be prepared to carry a daypack weighing up to 8 kgs, or in some cases a full pack weighing up to 20kg

Entry Level Mountaineering / Exploratory Treks

Classed as expeditions, they involve either extreme trekking and or basic mountaineering. Expect remote and poorly defined trails in variable weather conditions for up to 12 hours a day (possibly more subject to weather conditions and altitude). This may include a number of demanding high pass crossings and evacuation may be difficult from remote areas.

Intermediate Mountaineering

Participants should be competent and self sufficient in the outdoors and have experience in multi day trekking at altitude. Prior experience on an entry level mountaineering expedition is highly recommended. The terrain will involve low to moderate angle snow slopes and travelling on crevassed glaciers.

Advanced Mountaineering

These are our most challenging expeditions. Most are participatory expeditions & involve load carrying, setting up of camps, cooking and campcraft. Some of these expeditions also involve “technical” climbing and are for experienced alpine climbers / mountaineers only. Technical expeditions involve steep climbing at high altitude (including rock climbing).

The conditions are relatively straightforward and not technically difficult. Expect generally low angled slopes with no prolonged steep or exposed sections and glacier travel where participants are roped together. Abseiling may be required in short sections.

Intermediate

The conditions are variable with generally low angled slopes with some sections of moderately steep snow or easy rock where ropes are required. Some basic rock climbing and abseiling involved.

The conditions are challenging involving steep and exposed snow and ice slopes with sections of rock climbing. Some sections involve abseiling and belaying.

A more serious and technical undertaking involving long and exposed climbing on snow, rock and ice. Competent rope work, efficiency of movement and good technical skills are required.

These journeys of discovery and cruises are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: Once or twice a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour, for at least 2-3 months prior to departure.

To enjoy these adventures we suggest you have a reasonable level of fitness and health, a moderately active lifestyle and a positive attitude.

Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure.

Our introductory trips are not ‘easy’ trips and you will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week, starting at least two to three months before departure. Hill or stair walking with a 5-7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

On these adventures you will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 45 minutes of aerobic type exercise three times a week, from a minimum of three months period to your departure. Hill or stair walking with a 7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

These adventures require a good level of fitness and health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 45-60 minutes of aerobic type exercise, three to four times a week. Hill or stair walking with a 7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

These adventures require a good level of fitness and excellent health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend one hour of aerobic type exercise, four times a week. Hill or stair walking with a 7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

On these challenging adventures, you will need an excellent level of fitness. Some treks may require you to carry a full pack weighing up to 20kg.

Suggested preparation: We suggest up to one hour of strenuous exercise at least four days a week, interspersed with a relatively demanding bushwalk at the weekend. The best exercise for trekking is bushwalking involving relatively steep ascents and descents. Hill walking with a 7kg pack in variable weather conditions is a must. Multi day walks are ideal preparation for our challenging adventures.

To participate in these entry level expeditions or exploratory treks, you must be in excellent health and lead a very active lifestyle. The trips are suitable for first time mountaineers, previous altitude experience is preferable but not essential, and you must be comfortable in adverse weather conditions.

Suggested preparation: Physical fitness should be an ongoing thing, which should start from a base at around four to six months prior to departure and increase to build maximum endurance, stamina, flexibility and familiarity with the anticipated routine as much as possible by your trip commencement. Three to five hard sessions of 45 to 60 minutes of physical exercise per week such as running, hill walking, swimming, cycling or gym work will build excellent aerobic capacity and overall endurance and stamina which are so important in trekking and climbing at altitude. Overnight or multi day bushwalks (on rough, loose and rocky terrain) should be incorporated in your training regime; this develops skill and confidence on difficult terrain you will find on expedition. Rest and recovery, whilst at the same time steadily increasing your routine and incorporating variety, are just as important parts of the process if you intend to maintain and enjoy the regime for any duration.

Please review the ‘Physical Fitness’ section of the detailed trip notes for each expedition to ensure your fitness and training are sufficient.

To participate in intermediate level expeditions, you must be in excellent health and lead a very active lifestyle. Experience with multi-day trekking at altitude is essential. Experience using ice axes and campons is preferable but not essential.

Prior mountaineering experience is essential for participation in these advanced expeditions. Participation is also subject to acceptance by one of our high altitude mountaineering guides. Most are participatory expeditions, involving load carrying, setting up of camps, cooking and camp craft. Some of these expeditions also involve ‘technical’ climbing and are for experienced alpine climbers only.

The exact inclusions and equipment for each of our adventures is listed once you've found the trip you want. Our trips are generally more inclusive than others in the market place in line with our philosophy of minimising 'extra payments' displayed outside of the main trip price as well as out of pocket expenses once you reach your destination.

Blix e-bikes up to $687 off in savings + new vika x model down at $1,699, velotric e-bikes up to $1,100 off, more.

Avatar for Reinette LeJeune

We’ve got another day of e-bike deals for you to close out this week’s Green Deals, with the headliner being the launch deal on the new Blix Vika X Folding e-bike at $1,699 that also includes a free carrying bag that fits nicely onto the e-bike for transport. Right on its heels is the Labor Day sale on three of Blix’s popular e-bike models seeing up to $687 in combined savings, as well as three extra savings opportunities being added to Velotric’s Summer Sale that is taking up to an additional $200 off three e-bike models – totaling up to $1,100 in savings ! Plus, all the other hangover Green Deals that are still alive and well, like yesterday’s Lectric e-bike bundle discounts or the collection of Rexing EV charger adapters that are currently seeing up to 25% off markdowns.

Head below for other New Green Deals we’ve found today and, of course,  Electrek ’s best EV buying  and  leasing deals . Also, check out the new  Electrek Tesla Shop for the best deals on Tesla accessories .

New Blix Vika X Folding e-bike launches at $1,699 with free bonus gear

Alongside its  ongoing Labor Day sale , Blix has launched its new  Vika X Folding e-bike  at a discounted  $1,699  rate  and some free gear thrown in too. It will be normally priced at $1,799, but today you’re getting a pleasant $100 shaved off, which isn’t a whole lot, but seeing as a lot of company’s are releasing new models at their MSRPs lately, it’s appreciated here. You’ll also be getting Vika X carrying bag, valued at $99, that folds into itself, making it simple to attach to the rear carrier.

Blix’s  Vika X Folding e-bike  arrives onto the micromobility scene with a rear-geared 500W hub motor paired with a 614.4Wh battery (barely beating the Vika+ Flex’s 614Wh). It offers three levels of pedal assistance that is supported by the newly added torque sensor. You can actively switch between either class 2 or class 3 settings here, giving you a 20 MPH to 28 MPH top speed range depending on what you prefer while getting up to 70 miles of travel range depending on what settings you go with.

The Vika X e-bike  has been given an optional automatic shifting functionality that will adjust gear shifting and motor power to match the rider’s pedaling, or if you prefer making those decisions on your own, gears can be switched between electronically at the simple press of a button, bringing some convenience into the build. Along with this new feature, there’s a bunch more that enhances riding safety, like the added brake light and turn signal capabilities to the integrated taillight, an auto-adjusting backlit color display, a more powerful integrated high-beam headlight – plus, there’s even a speaker-based electronic horn and hydraulic disc brakes that have been thrown on too. Of course, as the name implies, its frame folds down to a 36-inch x 21-inch x 28.5-inch size for easier storage and transport options.

Vika X e-bike

Blix Labor Day sale offers up to $687 in combined savings on three e-bikes starting from $1,399

Blix Bikes’  ongoing Labor Day sale  that is taking  $500 off three e-bikes  and giving away  up to $187  in free gear. As a lover of versatility in EVs, the standout for me is the  Packa Genie Cargo e-bike for  $1,599 shipped . It would normally run you $2,099 most days outside any such sale, and has often been dropping between $1,699 and $1,899 for most of the sales in 2024, though we did see it drop as low as $1,499 once back in April. It lands here at its second-lowest price that we have tracked and even beats out its Black Friday and Christmas pricing from last year by $100, with nearly as much free gear too. Speaking of the free gear, you’ll be getting a pair of running boards alongside a cushioned seat for its rear rack to provide either a comfortable place for a passenger or a dedicated space for other cargo/packages/bags. You can get an in-depth rundown on what to expect in  our hands-on review  or head below to learn more.

The  Packa Genie  cruises onto the scene stocked with a 750W geared rear hub motor (peaking at 1,350W) alongside the 672Wh battery and five levels of pedal assistance that comes supported by a 12-magnet cadence sensor (sorry, torque sensor purists). It is a class 2 model so it hits a maximum 20 MPH speed with a 40-mile travel distance for the single battery model, or you can double up the batteries for double the travel range at $400 more. There is also a throttle for pure electric action, though keep in mind relying on it alone will likely drop the travel range down around 25 miles somewhere.

It comes with some nice extra features too, with a full digital display that even has a USB port for charging your phone as you ride – which is always appreciated as someone who uses my phone’s GPS to navigate the city streets. There’s also puncture-resistant tires, fenders over top both of those, integrated head and taillights, a smart bell, hydraulic disc brakes, 7-speed gear shifter, as well as the obvious mounting points along the rear rack which boasts a 200-pound payload. A rear wheel net guard has even been thrown on, which is essential, in my opinion, if you plan to take any kids on the ride with you.

Other Blix Labor Day deals:

  • comes with an everyday bag worth $89
  • comes with fender set, rear rack, and city tote worth $187

Save up to $1,100 on three Velotric e-bikes starting from $1,249 as Summer Sale approaches its end

Velotric’s  ongoing Summer Sale  that is offering  up to $900 in combined savings  will be ending September 2. With the weekend between us and the upcoming holiday, the brand has added some opportunities to get extra savings on three of the e-bikes that are on clearance, with one being the lightweight  T1 e-bike that we covered earlier in the sale  with smart features and a range extender battery that is getting an additional $200 taken off to a new  $1,399  low  ( use code  VLDeals200  at checkout ). Diving into the other two models benefiting from this deal, let’s start with the  Go 1 Utility e-bike for  $1,249 shipped ,  after using the promo code  VLDeals150  at checkout for an additional $150 off . Normally going for $1,699, we’ve seen it dip in and out of sales across 2024, with the lowest of the year being $1,299, though we have seen it go as low as $1,099 in past years. Today, though, the usual second-lowest price is getting undercut by $50, giving you the best rate we’ve seen in a while. You can get a hands-on rundown from  our review   or head below to learn more.

The  Go 1 e-bike  arrives with an equipped 500W hub motor that peaks at 900W, as well as a removable 691.2Wh battery and five levels of pedal assistance that all work in conjunction to carry you up to 55 miles on a single charge at up to 20 MPH (which can be unlocked to 25 MPH).

It has some nice bang-for-your buck features here too, like the SHIMANO 7-speed derailleur, the puncture-resistant tires (which I am always happy to see being a New Yorker), a removable thumb throttle, an a 3.5-inch LCD display with a USB port to charge your phone if you use it for navigation, an integrated LED headlight, a taillight that’s been integrated into the rear rack that also boasts brake light functionality. A nice little touch here is the inclusion of Apple Find My that offers some peace of mind for those who are concerned with theft.

The third e-bike benefitting from these extra savings is the  Packer 1 Cargo e-bike at  $1,549 shipped ,  after using the promo code  VLDeals150  at checkout for an additional $150 off . This model arrives sporting the longer ‘cargo’ rear rack as opposed to the above’s shorter ‘utility’ one, with some notable features that were praised in  our hands-on review . The e-bike cruises into view with a 750W rear-geared hub motor (peaking at 1,200W for areas with more hills as well as larger hauls) and a 691.2Wh battery like the Go 1. You can hit top speeds of 20 MPH (which can be unlocked to 25 MPH too), with a 52 miles on a single charge when primarily using the pedal assistance, though there is the throttle to go pure electric when you want it.

You’re looking at a SHIMANO 8-speed derailleur here, 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes, puncture-resistant tires once again, the same headlight and taillight integrated into the rack as above, as well as the same 3.5-inch LCD display with a USB port and Apple Find My capabilities. Plus, it has a 440-pound payload, meaning it can handle some bigger riders while smaller riders can easily take passengers along with them.
