While we’re often daydreaming of beaches in the Maldives and vineyards in Tuscany, there are plenty of amazing destinations in our own backyard. To help you with your bucket list, we’ve rounded up 50 places you must visit in the United States before you die — in no particular order.

A four-hour drive south of Portland, Crater Lake National Park in Oregon is 183,224 acres and home to America’s deepest lake. 40. Taos Pueblo, New Mexico

Located 90 minutes north of Santa Fe, Taos Pueblo is a UNESCO World Heritage site. An active Native American community resides on Taos Pueblo lands, both within the Pueblo and in surrounding areas. The City of Brotherly Love is filled with love — literally. One of best-known landmarks is LOVE itself — the Robert Indiana sculpture in John F. Boeing Future of Flight

Boeing Future of Flight is one of Washington state’s premier aerospace attraction and experiences, 25 miles north of downtown Seattle. It is located in Mukilteo at Paine Field. Guests are welcome for the Gallery, Sky Deck, and Boeing Store.

T-Mobile Park and Lumen Field

Pioneer Square

Take an afternoon or more to explore Pioneer Square ‘s ivy-covered buildings and pop into bars, boutiques, and hidden gems, like Waterfall Garden Park .

Ballard Locks

What’s the best time to visit Zion?

Zion National Park is open all year , but it receives the majority of its visitors in summer and early autumn. In spring (March-May), the spring thaw creates magnificent seasonal waterfalls in the main canyon, but some of the most popular attractions are closed due to the Virgin River’s spring runoff. From June onwards, all sections of the park should be open, but due to the summer tourist season, from mid-May to mid-September, you could end up in unbearable crowds.

The best time to go to Zion National Park is the second half of September .  The weather is still hot, the days clear, and the rivers warm. Moreover, the leaves begin to change in September, leading to some spectacular views. Visiting Zion National Park in November is also a good idea. In October and November, the temperatures are the most pleasant, and if you are particularly lucky, you may even witness the first snow in Zion.

A few facts about Zion

Located in southwestern Utah on the very edge of the Colorado Plateau, Zion National Park owes its beauty to the unique clash of the lush, green high country and the dry desert below. It is a part of the so-called “Grand Circle Tour” , a series of three spectacular national parks: Bryce Canyon National Park, the Grand Canyon, and Zion National Park. With its network of breathtaking deserts, tree-covered mesas, and colorful canyons, 84 percent of Zion’s 124,000 acres of extraordinary landscapes is still preserved as untouched wilderness .

It takes about four hours to get from Salt Lake City to Zion National Park, while getting there from Las Vegas takes about two and a half hours.

Start Your Trip off at the Zion National Park Visitor Center

When you visit Zion National Park, the first thing you should do is check out the Zion National Park Visitor Center to see which attractions are open and safe to explore. Oftentimes, some areas are closed or dangerous due to potential rockfalls or flash floods. The Visitor Center has a handy information sheet with a detailed hiking guide describing each hike and letting you know how strenuous each activity is. Once you get all the information you need, it will be easier to decide what to do in Zion National Park.

Board the Free Shuttle

Although driving through Zion National Park can be beautiful, first-time visitors will get the most out of their trip by taking the free shuttle bus . Not to mention the fact that during the tourist season, large sections of the park tend to be closed off for private vehicles. The shuttle will take you on a Zion scenic drive up the main canyon, accompanied by an audio introduction pointing out what to see in Zion National Park. The shuttle makes multiple designated stops at trailheads and picturesque viewpoints. Bring the Zion National Park Information Sheet from the Visitor Center with you and get off the bus often to take in the scenery.

Visit the Zion Human History Museum

The Zion Human History Museum is one of the first stops on the shuttle route through Zion National Park. It is primarily a cultural museum with exhibits focusing on the history of the American Indians, early settlers and pioneers, as well as initial conservation efforts which led to the establishment of Zion National Park in 1919. Prior to the 1990s, what is now the Zion Human History Museum served as the previous visitor center. Make a Short Stop at the Court of the Patriarchs Viewpoint

The Court of the Patriarchs is a group of three adjacent, similar cliffs named after biblical figures Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Although the view is breathtaking, you probably won’t lose too much time here, as the path to reach the viewpoint of the Court of the Patriarchs is very short. There is also a path that leads to the Sand Bench Trail across the road, but you should skip that for now, as the Sand Bench Trail is perfect for that unique Zion horseback riding experience.

Take a Lunch Break at Zion Lodge

Zion Lodge , built in the 1920s, is a rustic, medium-sized hotel, a member of Historic Hotels of America, as part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation . For the Zion shuttle, this is one of the major stops, with a lot of people getting on and off. When you visit the Lodge, you can choose one of several on-site restaurants for lunch. You should also visit the gift shop and relax under the magnificent cottonwood tree in the middle of the grand lawn.

Zion Horseback Riding

Across the road from Zion Lodge, you will find the horse stables maintained by Canyon Trail Rides for Zion horseback riding on the Sand Bench trail , a commercial horse trail, open between March and October. This trail runs across the middle of an awe-inspiring landslide under The Sentinel peak , one of the most prominent features of Zion National Park. The landslide is in fact a huge section of The Sentinel that broke off and slid down thousands of years ago. In spite of being one of the best things to do in Zion National Park, this trail is quite a bit less popular than some of Zion’s other attractions. Instead of climbing up to the Emerald Pools, go for this underrated gem. Escape the crowds and opt for an unforgettable experience in the middle of Zion’s most unique scenery. Proceed to Weeping Rock

After the Sand Bench trail, get back on the shuttle until you reach Weeping Rock . This stop serves as the starting point for a number of exciting hikes including Deertrap Mountain, Hidden Canyon, Cable Mountain, East Rim Trail, and Observation Point. Weeping Rock itself is a famous landmark, a unique rock alcove with springs dripping from above, making it look as if the rock is crying. The phenomenon happens because the lower layers of sandstone have eroded away, and the descending water gets pushed out the side after reaching an impermeable rock layer. It is easily accessible after a short, but steep hike. It takes no more than ten minutes to get there.

Choose One of the Three Strenuous Hikes

Unfortunately, some of Zion’s most famous attractions are pretty hard to reach and it takes hours of hiking to get there. Visiting them all would be impossible if you’re only spending one day in Zion National Park, and you certainly don’t want to get caught in one of these places after dark. Choose the one attraction that is best suited for you when it comes to your physical fitness, or plan in advance based on the information given to you at the Visitor Center.

First Option: Observation Point

Observation Point is one of the most famous viewpoints in Zion. The spectacular view can be reached after a pretty challenging 4-mile hike from the Weeping Rock Trailhead. Although completing the trail can take anywhere between 4 to 6 hours, once you’re at the top, the sense of pride and accomplishment paired with the unparalleled view will make it all worth it.

Second Option: The Narrows

The Zion Narrows are arguably even more famous. The Temple of Sinawava is the last shuttle stop, after which the walls of the canyon start closing in around the Virgin River, which cuts its way through the narrow, deep sandstone labyrinth.

Third Option: Angels Landing

Angels Landing is another classic landmark, with every travel guide listing the hike to the top as one of the most memorable things to do in Zion National Park. Although Angels Landing is one of the most stunning viewpoints anywhere in the world, it is not recommended for anyone afraid of heights, since the path leading there is bordered by long drop-offs, and only a steep, narrow ridge leads to the summit.

Since you will be doing this hike later in the day, choosing Angels Landing or Observation Point may be your best bet. That way, you’ll get to enjoy the sunset from high above the canyon floor, and seeing the cliffs glowing in every possible hue of sandstone will take your breath away.

Stop for Dinner at Springdale

As you’re leaving the park, take the time to stop and explore Springdale , a small tourist town named one of the 20 prettiest towns in the U.S. by Forbes. Extra tips for visiting Zion

-Make sure to park legally during your stay in Zion National Park. The parking space is limited and parking is only allowed in designated stalls. If you break the rules, your vehicle may get towed. In case all of the designated stalls in Zion are full, you can park in Springdale and take the free shuttle to Zion National Park.

-If you are staying at one of the campgrounds, make sure to make reservations at least three months in advance.

– Educate yourself about the various dangers you may encounter in Zion National Park. There have been accidents involving casualties in Angels Landing, The Narrows, and The Tunnel. Always be careful and prepared.

-Make sure you bring a walking stick if you are visiting the Narrows. The current can get pretty strong, especially as you go deeper. Having a stick will help you maintain your balance and prod the water to check for sharp rocks.

-Bring a pair of really good shoes . The soles should be hard and grippy . Regular sneakers will be insufficient, and you’ll feel the rocks under your feet. You may even hurt yourself.

– On a warm day, you may feel like swimming when visiting the Narrows, and there are a couple of places where you can do so. So, come prepared and bring a swimsuit.

-For longer hikes, bring some food and water with you. You should always have at least an energy bar with you to make sure you have enough energy to walk there and back again.

– Leave no trace . When hiking, you should stay on the trail. Do not touch the rock cairns and do not remove anything from the park. Most importantly, don’t leave any trash behind.

What's your chance of seeing the northern lights tonight? A look at Saturday's forecast

Illuminating the night sky with pink, green and gray colors, the northern lights made its appearance in the United Kingdom and the northern half of the United States on Friday. The magical phenomena could happen again tonight.

The show fascinated many onlookers as they took out their phones to capture the beauty of the night sky. On Friday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued extreme (G5) conditions across the United States. A storm of this intensity has not been seen since October 2003. The storm gained the name "Halloween Storm" and caused many power outages in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, according to Earth.com .

Meteorologists have predicted that the northern lights can be visible on Saturday as well as Sunday. If you are going outside to see the northern lights, forecasters want to remind the public that their solar eclipse glasses can be used for viewing the phenomenon.

Here's what you need to know to prepare for the next viewing of the northern lights.

The northern lights: Danced across the US last night. It could happen again Saturday.

What is the cloud forecast Saturday night? Will clouds block the northern lights?

If you missed the aurora borealis Friday night, you might still catch a glimpse on Saturday or Sunday, depending on where you live. But not if clouds get in the way.

The cloud forecast for Saturday night is generally good for most of America, but some of the people who missed their chance last night due to clouds may have a similar problem Saturday, said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines. Areas that are likely to be cloudy include New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, as well as parts of the Southern Plains, including Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

“Even just a few breaks in the clouds will allow the aurora to be visible,” Kines said. “There’s always hope.”

Peak visibility time Saturday night will be between 9 p.m. and midnight, with some chance until 2 a.m., Kines said. The best views will be in dark areas away from the light pollution of cities, he said, though some reported seeing the auroras Friday night from metro areas like Milwaukee and Detroit.

Sunday night, if there is any aurora to see, those in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic can rejoice, because Kines said the skies should be clearer.

Where can you see the northern lights tonight?

The Space and Weather Prediction Center  offers an experimental forecast map  that shows the aurora may be visible in a wide swath of the U.S. including Oregon, Nebraska, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Other states like California, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida could also see the sky light up again for an encore performance. But visibility will depend on shifting factors that include weather, pollution and cloud cover.

Below are forecast predictions for seeing the northern lights in New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana on Saturday.

Rain and clouds are expected to damper expectations to see the aurora borealis around the Rochester, N.Y. area . Elsewhere in NY, the  Lower Hudson Valley could see the lights again, if weather permits. 

NWS maps predicting the intensity and location of the northern lights Saturday and Sunday show the aurora will be visible in mid to northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be mostly cloudy with some rain showers and isolated thunderstorms. The NWS predicted 48% to 58% sky cover in metro Detroit from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. The western portion of both peninsulas are expected to have a lower cloud cover.

In the Milwaukee area , the evening is expected to bring mostly clear skies and overnight will have scattered clouds, said Tim Halbach, local meteorologist with the National Weather Service. 

Those living around the Cincinnati region could be treated to the northern lights Saturday night with the NWS' Wilmington, Ohio , office forecasting dry, partly cloudy conditions. Clouds shouldn't be an issue as many Ohioans reported seeing the lights Friday despite some cloud cover.

 In a telephone interview, Mike Bettwy, operations chief of the NOAA's  Space Weather Prediction Center  in Boulder, Co, said Indianapolis and surrounding areas might have a better chance of seeing the aurora today and Sunday.

They can expect clear skies tonight, Bettwy said.

"The aurora itself might be actually a little bit less active than it was last night," he told IndyStar. "I think the ability for you to see it will be better because the skies will be clearing out — at least in the Indianapolis area and that immediate vicinity."

Northern lights forecast path

If you want to get a better idea of if you will be able to see the northern lights from your state, check NOAA's aurora forecast tool , which has a 30-minute forecast window. 

The auroras are a natural light display in Earth's sky that are famously best seen in high-latitude regions.

Scientist left amazed by the aurora

The aurora seen on May 10 amazed Antonella Fruscione, an astrophysicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. She sent photos of the lights and the April eclipse to her friends in Italy. The northern lights weren't as prominent in Italy as it was in other places.

"And I sent them the picture that I took at the solar eclipse and I said, 'Can you imagine how fortunate I was this year, one month apart, I see these two incredible spectacles of the universe,'" she recalled telling them.

The phenomena seen Friday and possibly Saturday night isn't usual, she said.

"It's a very rare occurrence, especially because last night it was really visible," Fruscione said.

That's because the Earth's magnetic activity was at a nine, the highest the index goes, coupled with the Sun being at an active peak, causing eruptions. She added the colors cannot be predicted either as it depends on how the solar energetic particles interact with oxygen and nitrogen atoms. Oxygen appears green, while nitrogen appears purple, blue or pink, she said.

"It just depends on which atoms in the atmosphere this particle interact with," Fruscione said.

She declined to predict how strong Saturday's aurora could be as it's not in her expertise, but said people make predictions all the time about space weather not just for the northern lights, but to ensure communications, space stations, astronauts and other matter in space doesn't get majorly disrupted.

Down on Earth, however, the activity is harmless to humans.

"It's completely harmless because the particles do not don't do not reach us," Fruscione said. "The reason why we see the colors is that the particle interacts with the atoms and they make these beautiful colors and that's it."

For Saturday, and any other day where chatter about the aurora borealis is high, Fruscione encouraged people to download an aurora forecasting app to their phones so they can see the colorful skies.

What are the northern lights?

The northern lights materialize when energized particles from the sun reach Earth's upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph,  according to Space.com . Earth's magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles through a process that produces a stunning display of rays, spirals and flickers that has fascinated humans for millennia.

Today, my Administration is canceling student debt for 160,000 more people, bringing the total number of Americans who have benefitted from our debt relief actions to 4.75 million. Each of those borrowers has received an average of over $35,000 in debt cancellation. These 160,000 additional borrowers are people enrolled in my Administration’s SAVE Plan; are public service workers like teachers, nurses, or law enforcement officials; or are borrowers who were approved for relief because of fixes we made to Income-Driven Repayment. 

Today’s announcement comes on top of the significant progress we’ve made for students and borrowers over the past three years. That includes providing the largest increases to the maximum Pell Grant in over a decade; fixing Public Service Loan Forgiveness so teachers, nurses, police officers, and other public service workers get the relief they are entitled to under the law; and holding colleges accountable for taking advantage of students and families. And last month, I laid out my Administration’s new plans that would cancel student debt for more than 30 million Americans when combined with everything we’ve done so far.

TSA is prepared for the expected increase in summer travel from JFK and LaGuardia Airports

NEW YORK -- As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared to handle an increase in the number of travelers who will be flying out of JFK International and LaGuardia airports as well as and airports nationwide.

For the first time ever, TSA will likely be screening more than 3 million passengers nationwide in a single day at some point this summer. We have already recorded four top 10 busiest days this month, with this Thursday and Friday before Memorial Day expected to see more than 2.9 individuals screened at checkpoints across the nation.

“Here at LaGuardia Airport, we expect to see an increase of about 10 percent more travelers per day for Memorial Day Weekend than we see in an average weekend,” said Robert Duffy, TSA’s Federal Security Director for LaGuardia Airport. “The most important things that travelers can do is to get to the airport early and come prepared to go through the checkpoint screening process.”

At John F. Kennedy International Airport, TSA expects to screen approximately 12,000 more travelers per day for Memorial Day weekend than during a typical weekend, according to John Essig, TSA’s Federal Security Director for JFK International Airport. This is an 11.5 percent increase in checkpoint throughput from 2023. “We encourage travelers to know the contents of their carry-on bags to ensure that there is nothing prohibited inside that will require a bag to be pulled aside, opened and inspected. Knowing the items inside a carry-in bag before you leave for the airport will help ensure a smooth transition through our checkpoints,” Essig said.

TSA continues to deploy new technologies at checkpoints to enhance security, which is why it is important for travelers to listen to and follow the guidance offered by TSA officers. TSA continues to upgrade all of its primary screening technologies for identity verification and carry-on bag screening. These critical technology investments improve security effectiveness; increase security efficiency; and enhance the passenger experience. These technologies include computed tomography (CT) and credential authentication technology (CAT or CAT-2). The CT units provide a 3D image of the contents of carry-on bags at checkpoints. The CAT units scan a traveler’s photo identification, confirm the traveler’s identity as well as their flight details. The new generation of CAT units, referred to as CAT-2, have the same capabilities, but are also equipped with a camera that captures a real-time photo of the traveler. CAT-2 compares the traveler’s photo on the ID against the in-person, real-time photo. Once the CAT-2 confirms the match, a security officer verifies and the traveler can proceed through the checkpoint, without ever exchanging a boarding pass. The photo is then deleted. Travelers who do not wish to participate in the facial matching process can opt out in favor of an alternative identity verification process. 

TSA asks that the travelling public do their part in efficient checkpoint screening by arriving to the airport two hours prior to their scheduled flight departure and know what they can – and cannot pack – in their carry-on luggage.

TSA reminds passengers to always know the contents of their carry-on bag prior to coming to the security checkpoint. TSA has multiple resources available to passengers to help them determine whether an item is permitted in carry-on baggage, checked baggage, either or neither. Travelers can use the “ Can I Bring?” feature on the TSA website or on the free downloadable myTSA app . Travelers can also tweet to @AskTSA or send a text message (275-872) if they have a travel question or are unsure if an item is allowed through security in a carry-on bag. Just snap a picture or send a question and get real-time assistance.

Individuals who are planning to travel this summer should consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck ®. The popular expedited screening program allows travelers to leave on their shoes, jackets, belts and enables them to keep their electronics and 3-1-1 bags in their carry-on bags. Teenagers aged 13-17 may accompany their TSA PreCheck-enrolled parents or guardians through TSA PreCheck screening when traveling on the same reservation and when the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on the teen’s boarding pass. Children 12 and under may still accompany an enrolled parent or guardian when traveling through the TSA PreCheck lanes anytime without restriction.

This summer is also the ideal time to get a REAL ID drivers license. We are one year out from the REAL ID deadline. Beginning May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or license to fly within the U.S., make sure it is REAL ID compliant.

Travelers should also keep these tips in mind while traveling:

• Do not attempt to bring a firearm through a TSA checkpoint; doing so compromises the safety and security of other passengers and our officers in the checkpoint.  Passengers who do attempt to bring a firearm through a checkpoint can expect to receive a civil penalty (fines may be as high as $15,000) and lose eligibility for TSA PreCheck. Additionally, local law enforcement will be called and because these passengers may present additional risk beyond the firearm, they will receive enhanced screening.
• Get to the airport early. Travelers should arrive a minimum of two hours before their scheduled domestic flights and three hours before scheduled international flights. Roadways near airports are going to be crowded. It is going to take longer to locate an available parking space at the airport. Airline check-in counters will be busy. This is all before you even get to the security checkpoint. If you find yourself waiting in a security checkpoint lane, use that time to your advantage. That’s the ideal time to remove items from your pockets and place them into a carry-on bag. It’s also the time to get out your ID and boarding pass so you’re not fumbling in your wallet for your ID when you step up to the TSA travel document checking podium.
• Know before you go. Travelers need to know what can and cannot go in their carry-on bag, from firearms to oversize liquids. Passengers will spend more time in the security checkpoint if their carry-on items trigger an alarm because it results in TSA’s need to resolve the alarm by opening the carry-on bag to determine what triggered the alarm. Use TSA’s tools for your resources. TSA offers several ways for travelers to find out if an item is permitted in a carry-on bag, checked bag, either or neither and TSA has just launched a new higher level of assistance for travelers with questions about airport security screening procedures. Airline passengers may now send a text message using any mobile device to “AskTSA” (275-872). A virtual assistant is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For more complicated questions, @AskTSA staff are available daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Twitter and on Facebook Messenger. The TSA web site has a feature on the homepage called “What can I bring?” Type in the name of the item and it will let you  know if it should be packed in a checked bag or carry-on bag. The same handy feature is available on the free downloadable MyTSA app . The MyTSA app gives users 24/7 access to the most frequently requested airport security information on any mobile device, including a searchable database that will let you know whether an item can be packed in a carry-on bag, checked bag, either or neither. The app also identifies delay information and current weather conditions at your favorite airports nationwide.
• Bring an acceptable ID. Before heading to the airport, travelers should make sure they have  acceptable identification .  And remember, the REAL ID deadline is less than a year away.
• Request passenger support Travelers or families of passengers with disabilities and/or medical conditions may call the  TSA Cares  helpline toll free at 855-787-2227 at least 72 hours prior to travel with any questions about screening procedures and to find out what to expect at the security checkpoint. TSA Cares also arranges assistance at the checkpoint for travelers with specific needs.

Climate change and turbulence: Experts weigh in after death on Singapore Airlines flight

One passenger died and 30 others were injured aboard a Singapore Airlines flight that was hit by "severe turbulence," officials said Tuesday, but experts say such deaths are rare even as researchers warn climate change may be causing more extreme cases of turbulence.

Since 2009, the National Transportation Safety Board said, the U.S. has not had any turbulence-related deaths aboard large commercial planes, such as the Boeing aircraft that encountered sudden extreme turbulence over the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar at 37,000 feet .

A 73-year-old passenger who had some medical problems died, possibly from cardiac arrest, and at least seven people were critically injured, Kittipong Kittikachorn, general manager of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, said at a news conference Tuesday.

The cause of the turbulence is under investigation. Singapore Airlines said the Singapore-bound flight from London encountered severe turbulence about 10 hours after departure.

Death by turbulence rarely occurs, but severe encounters are not uncommon, according to Larry Cornman, a physicist and project scientist with the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research.

“Often, for something like this, it’s just wrong place, wrong time,” said Cornman, who studies small-scale motions of the atmosphere that could endanger aircraft.

Out of millions upon millions of flights, turbulence has caused 185 serious injuries from 2009 to 2023, the latest year with publicly available data, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

The agency, which requires airlines to report injuries and deaths, categorizes a serious injury as any that requires more than two days of hospitalization; involves any internal organ; or results in bone fractures, second- or third-degree burns, severe hemorrhages, or nerve, muscle or tendon damage.

Of the reported incidents from 2009 to 2022, at least 129 crew members and 34 passengers were injured.

Turbulence-related deaths can be caused by heart attacks or head injuries if a passenger’s head strikes the ceiling or gets hit by falling luggage, Cornman said.

“Anything that could cause a death on the ground can certainly cause it inside an aluminum tube at 35,000 feet,” he said, adding that seat-belted passengers should still feel safe in the skies. 

“These large transport aircraft are built quite strongly. They will not fall apart or come out of the sky due to turbulence,” Cornman said. 

Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, said initial reports appear to indicate that the Singapore flight encountered clear-air turbulence — the most dangerous type because it cannot be seen and is virtually undetectable with current technology.

“One second, you’re cruising smoothly,” Nelson said. “The next, passengers, crew and unsecured carts or other items are being thrown around the cabin.”

Nelson and a group of researchers say such incidents of clear-air turbulence — which is difficult to forecast and avoid because it is not associated with storms — are on the rise due to climate change. 

A 2023 study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters found that severe clear-air turbulence increased by more than 50% over the North Atlantic Ocean from 1979 to 2020.

The uptick in turbulence likely owes to the effect of climate change on wind speeds in the upper levels of the atmosphere, the researchers found. Some of the most pronounced increases in clear-air turbulence in recent decades were over mid-latitude regions, including over the North Atlantic and flight routes over the United States, according to the study.

The results suggest that global warming may be driving instability in the jet stream, a conveyor belt of fast-moving air that encircles the globe over the Northern Hemisphere, said Mark Prosser, co-author of the study and a doctoral researcher at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. 

The jet stream, which flows like a river of air from west to east, is fueled by temperature differences between cooler regions to the north and warmer air masses to the south. Climate change may be throwing the jet stream off-kilter, which could have enormous implications for future air travel, Prosser said.

“Planes like to fly with the jet stream,” he said, “but where planes like to fly is also ironically where all the turbulence is.”

That instability is expected to increase as the world warms. Prosser’s colleagues at the University of Reading separately used climate models to project how clear-air turbulence in the latter half of this century may shift if global warming continues. The researchers found that increasing greenhouse gas emissions also increased turbulence and instability.

“If you compare the climate of 2050 to 2080 with the climate before we started emitting greenhouse gases — so, preindustrial times — there was a doubling, or tripling sometimes, of the amount of clear-air turbulence in the atmosphere,” Prosser said.

A total of 211 passengers and 18 crew members were on the Singapore Airlines flight when it was jolted midair, the airline said in a statement. The plane suddenly fell from 37,000 feet to 31,000 feet within five minutes, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware .

The pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the plane to Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, where it landed at 3:45 p.m. local time (4:45 a.m. ET), the airline said.

Officials did not release the identity of the deceased passenger Tuesday. 

The people on the flight hailed mostly from Australia, the United Kingdom, Singapore and New Zealand, the airline said. Four passengers were from the United States.

“Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” the statement said. “We deeply apologise for the traumatic experience that our passengers and crew members suffered on this flight.”

State Police Arrest Man In Connection With Alleged Road Rage Incident In Howard County, Seeking Potential Connection To Unsolved Case

(JESSUP, MD) – Maryland State Police arrested a man in connection with an alleged road rage incident that occurred earlier this month in Howard County.

The suspect, identified as Jeffery Johnson, 32, of Dundalk, Maryland is charged with four counts of first-degree assault, four counts of second-degree assault, the use of a firearm in a felony/violent crime, and four counts of reckless endangerment. He was arrested and transported to the Baltimore County Detention Center where he is being held without bond.  

Shortly before 3:30 p.m. on May 14, 2024, troopers from the Maryland State Police Waterloo Barrack responded to the area of northbound Interstate 95, north of Maryland Route 32, for a report of an assault with a firearm. According to a preliminary investigation, a female victim and her three juvenile children, who are not being identified at this time, were traveling north on I-95 when a Nissan Altima, operated by Johnson, attempted to cut in front of her vehicle at a high rate of speed, subsequently causing a crash. The victim stated that Johnson then stopped the Nissan in traffic and approached her vehicle with a firearm and then fled in his vehicle. As the victim was driving off, Johnson then slowed the Nissan so he was next to her vehicle and pointed the firearm again. Johnson then fled the scene. No injuries were reported at the scene.

As troopers were conducting the investigation, they began to notice similarities between this incident and an unsolved case from January 2022, in which an Anne Arundel County man, identified as Charles “Charlie” Marks, was fatally shot in an apparent road rage incident on the same stretch of interstate.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit continues the Marks investigation and is asking anyone with information related to the case to call or text 410-645-0855. Metro Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
