ETOSHA SAFARI LODGE

etosha safari lodge

Join us at this stylish lodge overlooking a vast expanse of mopane woodland. Space is an attractive element at Etosha Safari Lodge with its lavish view, spacious deck- and dining-area and airy rooms with private verandas. It's the place to open doors to the mystery and magic of Etosha, 'Place of Legends'.

This is where stories were woven into the Hai//om mythology of the origin of Etosha's chalky pan, how Elephant saved the world with his generosity of spirit and the many tales about the animals below and the stars above that are part of the cycle of life in Etosha. Explore the national park with our knowledgeable guides who are familiar with the waterholes and the animals that frequent them. Take this opportunity to be introduced to African wildlife from the comfortable seat of a game vehicle. Early morning or late afternoon visits, in accordance with the Andersson Gate times, provide the best game viewing.

And, after Etosha enchantment return to the lodge to relax, dive into the cool waters of the pools or indulge in quality food and wine - and peace. The lodge, only ten kilometres from the Park's central entrance and a world away from the hustle and bustle of Okaukuejo, offers top grade Etosha accommodation with easy access to the Park. Days of animal wonder are balanced with comfort and care, creating an exceptional Etosha experience. Dine under a dome of stars on the outside veranda, sit next to a blazing fire or watch the red orb of the sun sink gracefully into the landscape from the sunset deck. The day couldn't be better. As the stars begin their celestial show, soft beds and animal dreams begin to call - and the anticipation of a good tomorrow. Etosha, the heart of the country, is beckoning with the immense beauty of the natural world.

Exclusive modern comfort

In the middle of northern Namibia’s arid, captivating savannah, bordering the world-famous Etosha National Park, is Safarihoek Lodge. Perched on top of a hill, overlooking the plains below, Safarihoek is a stylish sort of place, and you’ll find cool, thatched chalets all with private decks, a double-storey photography hide, and a swimming pool with 180-degree vistas of the brilliant savannah.

But if there’s one thing about Safarihoek, it’s the location. Everywhere you turn, the rugged Namibian savannah stretches into the distance, with only a spangly tree here, and a spiky bush there. The wildlife roams freely across the never-ending space, unhindered and unobstructed. This is a place of silence and solitude, and a rare opportunity to be at one with nature and the animals that thrive here.

Why You’ll Love Safarihoek:

  • Safarihoek is a serene and stylish lodge in an exclusive private reserve, close to the celebrated Etosha National Park, in Namibia’s most game-rich area.
  • The 11 chalets are elegant and well-equipped with 180-degress vistas of the landscape and waterhole. Eight have outdoor showers-with-a-view.
  • Wildlife-watch from the comfort and privacy of your room.
  • Spend time in the unique photography hide. Not just for photographers, it offers camera-busting close-ups of Namibia’s extraordinary wildlife.
  • Enjoy encounters with endangered black and white rhino.
  • Experience the silence and solitude of a truly remote corner of Namibia; Safarihoek is a place for escapism, in a vast swathe of perfectly-private wilderness.

Safarihoek Accommodations

etosha safari lodge

We do like a view at Natural Selection, and the vistas at Safarihoek have to be some of the best in the business. Raised high above the savannah on wooden platforms, each of the 11 chalets look out over the ambling zebra and romping elephant on the plains below. Take a seat on your private deck and watch wild Africa wander by, or escape the heat inside; the view is just as spectacular wherever you choose to sit. Under the thatch roofs of the chalets, you’ll find large double or twin beds, and a small writing desk, minibar and coffee station. All bathrooms have air conditioning and are ensuite (with indoor showers), and if you can’t bear to tear your eyes away, some have outdoor showers with a view too.

In the centre of camp, you’ll find a large lounge area, wine cellar, dining area, and a small curio shop all under thatch. On the chilly evenings of the dry season you’ll probably eat inside, watching the wild through the large glass windows, then in the warmer months, it’s all about the alfresco dining on the outdoor deck. There’s also a cosy outdoor seating area complete with roaring fire, and a perfect spot for keeping an eye on passing four-legged creatures. Drinks are served from the outdoor bar and can also be taken to the swimming pool, a cooling space with the same infinite views of the plains below.

When to Visit Safarihoek

etosha safari lodge

The different seasons bring very different experiences to Etosha Heights, and each has its own charms and challenges. During the winter season (May to September), the land shrivels and dries, and the grass all but disappears. Waterholes slowly evaporate into the crisp, clear air, and animals congregate around them, searching for the little water that remains. The result? Fantastic game-viewing, that’s iconic, easy and prolific.

Then come the summer months of October to April. It’s officially the rainy season across most of sub-Saharan Africa, but actual rainfall is scarce in Etosha Heights. When it does rain, it’s brief and dramatic, and spectacular thunderstorms transform the landscape into bright shocks of green. Higher grass and fuller waterholes make game viewing a little harder during this time of year, but you can still expect to enjoy a diverse cast of the animal kingdom.

As temperatures go, winter highs peak around 30 degrees, but mostly hover in the mid 20s. It does get cold at night, and the mercury has been known to drop below zero – but nothing a cosy sweater and a roaring fire can’t handle. In summer, the average daily highs can sometimes go beyond a stonking 40 degrees.

Seasonality

  • Green Season: 10 January – 31 March
  • Shoulder Season: 01 April – 30 June & 01 November – 09 January
  • High Season: 01 July – 30 September & 20 December – 19 December
  • Peak Season: 01 August – 31 August & 01 October – 31 October

Safarihoek Activities

etosha safari lodge

  • Enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in the Etosha Heights Private Reserve, and look for the elusive black and white rhino amongst large concentrations of plains game.
  • Wrap up warm and hop in the vehicle for a night-time game drive to explore the magic of the Namibian bush after dark.
  • Dust off your camera, charge those batteries, and spend the morning or afternoon in the unique, double-tiered photography hide. Even if you’re not a keen photographer, the hide will get you closer than ever to Namibia’s giants.
  • Bush meals and picnics can be arranged with a little advance notice.

Safarihoek Landscape & Wildlife

Safarihoek is set amongst an epic wilderness of vast savannah dotted with scatterings of mopane woodland and dolomite hills. This beautiful piece of Namibia is Etosha Heights Private Reserve, situated close to Etosha National Park’s southwestern border in northern Namibia. It’s a dry and dusty yet totally captivating land, and the silence and solitude that pervades is poignant. Down here, the wildlife is as magnificent as it is in the national park, and there’s one key difference too. Access to the reserve is carefully restricted (to humans, not animals!), making for exclusive and totally private wildlife experiences, free from tourist crowds and bulging 4x4s. And that’s exactly the kind of experience we like.

The impressive 60,000 hectares of classic Etosha landscape around Safarihoek Lodge is dominated by vast, flat savannah interspersed with thickets of mopane woodland, riverine forest, and scattered salt pans. The dolomite hills offer cover for elusive mountain zebra, kudu and lion – make sure to have your cameras ready! – and the numerous waterholes attract large numbers of game and their feathered counterparts. The reserve is also home to numerous species of antelope including sable and black-faced impala, as well as giraffe and other plains game. In winter, aardvark and elephant sightings are not infrequent. The Etosha area is rated one of the best places on the continent to view rhino, and Etosha Heights is home to both white and black rhino. A morning spent tracking their footprints through the dust before eventually coming nose-to-horn with one of the endangered beasts is a memory not to be forgotten.

Safarihoek Story

etosha safari lodge

Namibia is raw, rugged, and real, and the desert landscape is full of challenges, both for the wildlife and the people that inhabit it. The dream for Safarihoek was to create a lodge that would convince people to explore the wild, even if they weren’t naturally intrepid. We wanted somewhere that would allow people to discover the wilderness, but without forgoing the comforts; to have an adventure, but one that wasn’t too far out of the comfort zone. We also thought about price. Safaris can often be expensive, and we wanted to keep the lodge within the realms of possibility. And when Safarihoek opened in 2016, we think we managed to tick quite a few of those boxes.

Etosha Safari Lodge is the sister lodge of Etosha Safari Camp and part of the Gondwana Collection. It is only 10 km from the Anderson Gate of Etosha National Park. The restaurant and chalets are on a hillock and therefore have spectacular views below the savanna. The chalets are air-conditioned and very comfortable.

The lodge offers guests three swimming pools to enjoy some downtime between visits to the Etosha National Park. Furthermore, it is well known for some of the best viewing decks close to the park, such as a wooden lookout deck at the restaurant and bar area. This is ideal for a sundowner drink overlooking the Mopane bush below.

So much to see and do at Etosha Safari Lodge.

The camp offers guided game drives into Etosha National Park. Guests can choose between half-day and full-day options. Guests are also welcome to stay at the lodge and make self-drive trips to the park. Therefore it is ideal to base yourself at the lodge and visit the park.

etosha safari lodge

Etosha National Park is the second largest of Namibia 's game reserves (after Namib-Naukluft National Park ). It spans 20,000 km² in the Four-O region . The park surrounds the dry Etosha salt pan. The waterholes surrounding the pan attract animals, particularly in the drier winter months, because it is a source of water in a very dry land.

Understand [ edit ]

Its name means "big white place", referring to the Etosha Salt Pan.

All facilities inside the park are run by Namibia Wildlife Resorts , a company owned by the Namibian Government.

History [ edit ]

The park is over a hundred years old. And one of the most famous in the world.

Landscape [ edit ]

The park surrounds the Etosha salt pan an arid and dusty area - which is entirely dry for most of the year - it may only fill with water on one or two occasions throughout the year. The waterholes and boreholes that surround the pan attract a great deal of wildlife during the dryer months - as the only source of water in this harsh landscape.

Flora and fauna [ edit ]

There is lots of wildlife here that is easy to see. Springbok, Black-faced Impala, Zebra, Giraffe, Warthog, and Wildebeest will be hard to miss even driving along the main roads.

Elephant and Rhino are often seen in the bush and waterholes. There are a healthy populations of cheetah, lion and leopard for those with a keener eye on the shadows.

There are around 100 other species of mammals in the park. Jackals, hyena, dik-dik, steinbok, to name but a few.

There are no buffalo in the park, as there is simply insufficient water to sustain them.

Climate [ edit ]

Get in [ edit ].

The options are to take your own vehicle (hire or owned), to join a tour, or to fly on a charter.

Visitors are not permitted to walk in the park outside of a vehicle ( except in the enclosed camping/hotel areas ) on foot. Although it is possible to fly to one of the camps or lodges and take day-safari trips from the lodge.

If you are driving, the B1 from either Oshakati or Tsumeb ) brings you to the park's eastern gate at Namutoni . The C38, from Outjo bring you to the park's southern gate.

Safari companies operate from Windhoek and Swakopmund and offer tours of varying length in Etosha. Old maps might show the western part of the park as 'closed for private travellers' but this is no longer true.

Fees and permits [ edit ]

Entry fees are $80 per person per day, and $10 per vehicle per day.

The process to enter is bureaucratic. You fill in the paperwork at the gate, fill in your entry details, and then take it to an administration office at the camp to pay. You can buy multi-day tickets as long as they are for consecutive days. You can expect this process to take up to an hour during the busy season by the time you wait at the gate and again queue at the administration office. Credit cards and cash are accepted. You will need to show this paperwork each time you enter and exit the park.

Get around [ edit ]

etosha safari lodge

As mentioned above, you need a vehicle to get around the park. The roads are all well-graded gravel, so there is no need to have a four-wheel drive. Since the dust generated by traffic is damaging to the environment, the speed limit is 60 km/h (37 mph). Crossing Etosha from east to west takes the better part of a day.

Be careful when driving on gravel roads especially when braking as there is very little traction available and one can skid very easily. There is fuel available in the camps and at just outside the park gates. All the fuel stations accept credit and debit cards.

See [ edit ]

etosha safari lodge

  • Animals! Throughout the park, particularly at watering holes, of which there are many.
  • Rest Camp watering holes At all three rest camps, there is are watering holes just outside the perimeter fence. At night they are lit with flood lights and visitors can sit and watch as the animals come down to drink, flirt and occasionally fight well into the night. They are ideal places to wander down to with a sundowner after getting back from a days game spotting. Visitors are not allowed out of the rest camps after sunset so the waterholes provide the opportunity to continue watching the animals after dark.

Do [ edit ]

What else to do then see the wildlife! From every hotel there are possibilities to do a game drive, be sure to bring your binoculars as some animals (like lions or cheetahs) can only be watched when distance is kept. Also when close to animals be very quiet, most animals will be scared by the slightest noise.

The best time to easily see a lot of wildlife is in the afternoon around 15:30, be aware that the gates are closed to the park and to the camps at sunset. During the dry season the waterholes viewed from each of the camps offer good wildlife viewing. Wildlife tend not to come to the waterholes during the wet.

Buy [ edit ]

A good map that has all the water holes that tells you where to see the animals you may want to see. You can also download from the parks site before you travel.

Eat [ edit ]

Food is available at restaurants and kiosks in the camps. However, stocks are limited, and it's a monopoly provider. So you won't starve, but you will be paying a little over the odds for below par food. Also the opening hours are around mealtimes, so if you get into camp mid-afternoon hoping for some lunch you may be out of luck.

Drink [ edit ]

Sleep [ edit ].

There are five designated rest camps for visitors, enclosed by walls and fences. Namutoni, Halali and Okaukejo have camping, and most offer petrol stations, pools and shops for those things you forgot. The gates for camps open at sunrise and close at sunset. You are not allowed outside of a camp during night. Bush camping is not permitted. All lodges and campsites inside of the park can be booked through Namibia Wildlife Resorts .

  • Namutoni ( around 20km from the east gate of the park on a tarred road ). This is on the site of an old German fort which was burned down many years ago in a raid by the Ovambo people from the north. Today the fort is a hotel. There is also a shop where you can buy food and basic supplies and a restaurant and bar. There is a small museum here. Nice camp to walk around and watch the mongoose.
  • Halali ( South of the pan and situated about half way between the other two eastern camps ). This has the most impressive floodlit water hole with a viewing platform - you can walk down after setting up camp and sit here at sunset, drink a sundowner and watch the animals come down to drink. Being away from the edges of the park, this camp is at its busiest during the lunchtime rush. It probably the least attractive of the camps, with the most basic accommodation, but it has the largest pool.
  • Okaukuejo ( around 20km from the south entrance to the park on tarred road ). There are small huts available, as well as a restaurant and pool. Be sure to have a look at the waterhole around midnight, you can often see rhinos even during wet season. This has the best layout among all the camps and the best waterhole for sitting down and watching animals. The camp itself is attractive, and the accommodation is pleasant.
  • Dolomite Camp ( at the western entrance to the park ). It is a camp that is fairly new and offers luxury accommodation full board. The camp is situated on the top of a Koppie.
  • Onkoshi ( in the northeast corner of the park ). This camp is located on the edge of the Etosha pan and features fifteen huts built on elevated wooden decks.

There is other accommodation available near the park gates. This is often superior in quality and better value. You can take game drives into the park - but you should factor in the time taken to enter the park. Up to 10-15 km from the South Gate there are a number of lodges (Eldorado Lodge, Etosha Safari Camp, Etosha Safari Lodge, Taleni Etosha Village) along the C38 highway. Only a few hundred meters from the North Gate next to the D3646 highway is the location of the Etosha King Nehale lodge.

Onguma is a separate area to the east of the park, offering accommodation and wildlife of its own.

Stay safe [ edit ]

etosha safari lodge

Stay in your car; wild animals can be dangerous. There are plenty of picnic spots around the park where one can alight from your vehicle, but these are not all fenced so be on the lookout for animals. If you are concerned about breaking down within the park, you can take the number of one of the tow-out services, or the numbers of rest camps. The main road through the park sees regular traffic, but some of the loop roads are very lightly trafficked. Stay to the main routes if you are concerned.

At night, jackals may walk around your campsite, they will usually flee when they see you but be careful, some jackals carry rabies.

Although all campsites are fenced, do not sleep outside, especially not on the benches surrounding the waterholes. The fence is not high there and not really an obstacle for a lion.

Etosha is in a low-risk malaria zone. You should take medical advice before you travel and appropriate precautions.

Go next [ edit ]

Northeast of Etosha the Caprivi Strip offers more game parks and is en route to the Victoria Falls. On the way is the town of Tsumeb, where you can stop to visit the Tsumeb Museum, home of interesting mineral specimens such as dioptase from the local Tsumeb Mine, as well as the Helvi Mpingana Kondombolo Cultural Village for exhibits on various Namibian villages and ways of life. Two unique features about Tsumeb are that in the surrounding area are three sinkholes with uncharted depths due to subterranean laterite cave systems at the bottom, and secondly that the presence of the largest meteorite in the world, Hoba, weighing in at about 60 tons, is located in a site developed for tourism about 40 minutes southeast of the town.

You could stock up and stay overnight here, too, since it's a long way across the Central Plateau.

ETOSHA SAFARI LODGE, GONDWANA COLLECTION NAMIBIA - Hotel Reviews & Price Comparison (Ombika)

Etosha National Park Logo

WILDLIFE IN

Etosha National Park

It is hardly a secret that Etosha’s best game viewing is at the many waterholes scattered throughout the park . Especially during the dry winters most species rely on these permanent water sources. The larger waterholes see large treks of zebra and springbok mingle with Oryx and bathing elephants. Some of the camps even offer floodlit waterholes, where you can spot rhino, elephant and lion drinking from the same waterhole.

Etosha National Park is home to four of the Big 5. Elephants and lions are common in the park, while the elusive leopard hides in the densely vegetated areas. However, one of the best reasons to visit Etosha is its healthy population of black rhinoceros. This archaic beast is endangered and the waterholes are probably among the best places in the world to see this precious animal.

Other rare and endangered species include the black-faced impala, which can be seen around Dolomite Camp and the fleet footed cheetah. The plains are covered by large herds of springbok and zebra. The backdrop of the vast Etosha Pan  makes game viewing in Etosha a unique experience.

The large mammals in Etosha National Park include lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, giraffe, wildebeest, cheetah, hyena, mountain and plains zebra, springbok, kudu, gemsbok and eland. Among the smaller species you will find jackal, bat-eared fox, warthog, honey badger and ground squirrel. The park is home to 114 species of mammals.
