Are you looking to experience the best excursions in La Romana? Discover them with Otium International!"

La Romana offers an oasis of luxury that has been a favorite of celebrities for decades thanks to the beauty of the transitions of sugar cane fields leading to beautiful white sand beaches from Dominicus to Bayahibe.

La Romana is an ideal destination for families, honeymooners, divers and golfers. It is home to the famous Casa de Campo Resort, world-renowned golf courses, a world-class marina and Altos de Chavon, a beautiful replica of a centuries-old artisan village. Nearby, the Bayahibe area offers picturesque beaches, elegant accommodations, attractive

attractions and excellent ecotourism opportunities. Visitors can enjoy the stunning Saona Island, Cotubanamá National Park and much more.

In addition, there are many springs and Taino rock art in the cave-rich forests of Cotubanamá National Park. Offshore, the islands of Saona, Catalina and Catalinita are home to turtle nesting sites in front of impressive coral reefs, while shipwrecks teeming with marine life lie at the bottom of their waters. Its beaches are steeper and shorter than those of Punta Cana. However, many resorts have private sections of shallow, manicured sand to spend the day. The real attraction of this area is the turquoise waters; calm, warm and clear, the gentle tides are perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

The city of La Romana has many attractions that reflect Dominican culture and folklore, such as the feast in honor of Santa Rosa de Lima, its patron saint, as well as the carnival celebrations where La Romana has a special character: "Papabuey" (father ox).

Visiting La Romana is a new experience not to be missed for its incredible cultural offerings and natural wealth.

Interesting facts for your tours’ safety & total pleasure;

Pro Excursions sets the standards in Bayahibe in the matter of safety and reliability so that you can enjoy to the fullest your tour with us in the Dominican Republic. This is what you don’t know and that you should know so you can appreciate all the extra measures we took during your stop in La Romana…

  • There are taxis waiting at relay points. If there is a mechanical problem it usually will take no more than 5 minutes to change taxi to continue and  the drivers are always in communication. So your road trip is secured.
  • The Catamaran is inspected every morning and are is perfect working condition before starting the tour. But with mechanic, anything can happen, gas, engine, propeller etc. For this reason on that specific tour when we start the excursion, there is always a fully fueled Back-up speedboat waiting in case of emergency. The furthest point by speedboat from Bayahibe to the Beach of Saona is 30 minutes. 10 gallons more of gasoline is added in the boat, just in case.
  • The tour is scheduled to bring you back at Bayahibe 1.5 hours before ship departure. This leaves plenty of time to bring you back to port. So if any delays occur during the tour we have plenty of loose time, all events have been calculated.
  • There are life jackets for every guest
  • There is a complete first aid kit with people who know how to use it.
  • All guides are life guards and first aid attendants. (Dive masters or higher level)
  • A tour will be cancelled in case of bad weather forecast. No fun going out on a boat on a rainy day & no un-necessary risks to be taken.
  • If a tour is cancelled for other reasons you will be notified at least before your Cruise vacation starts.

This tour is offered to you to enjoy a beautiful day at one of the most beautiful beach of the Island of Saona in the DR. We are in the Dominican Republic and here you are not in the U.S. with American standards. The Locals speak Spanish not English. You need to be willing to live the adventure & fun of discovering a new country & culture while believing you are in good hands with us! Get ready for a great day in La Romana!!

21 of the best things to do in Rome

The best things to do in rome aren’t always the most obvious. here’s how to mix the colosseum with rooftop cocktails and unvisited art.

excursions from la romana

R ome wasn’t built in a day, and no one can ever hope to see it properly in a single trip. Here, in this giant layer-cake of history, every street leads to some kind of monument, and every church contains a miraculous piece of art. Add the appeal of the city’s modern life and you can see why so many people come back, again and again. But that doesn’t mean it’s unmanageable or overwhelming. With a little planning, and a pick-and mix-approach, you can get an intoxicating sense of the Eternal City in just a few days. These are just some of the highlights.

Main photo: The Altare della Patria (Getty Images)

The Colosseum in the morning sun (Alamy)

1. Tour the Colosseum

Let’s not beat about the bush. First and foremost, you’re here for the Urbs Aeterna — the eternal city of ancient Rome, already 700 years old when the phrase was first coined in the 1st century BC. To get a proper sense of its scale and grandeur, nothing beats the Colosseum . Admittedly, its interior has been roughly handled since the end of the empire. You’ll need to join a group or private guided tour to make sense of the ruins (the ones that include both the underground chambers and top tiers are best). But on its northern side, the exterior wall stands to its original height of 157 feet, and is still faced with travertine. So come early, get up close to it and imagine, for just a moment, you’re a Roman spectator, on the way in to see a gladiatorial contest with a crowd of 50,000 gathering to roar its support. Can you feel the ground shake?

The Pantheon (Alamy)

2. Crane your neck in the Pantheon

Not all of ancient Rome is ruined. Head to the Pantheon, and you’ll find a building which — although stripped of its most valuable materials — is essentially still complete, both inside and out. What’s more, when it was rebuilt in the early 2nd century AD, it was a ground-breaking piece of architecture, as you’ll understand in an instant when you walk in and look up. Soaring above you is a vast and brilliantly engineered dome, that culminates in a perfectly circular, unglazed skylight. To see it (relatively) crowd-free, arrive half an hour before it opens, or half an hour before it shuts, and don’t forget to look down as well as up. The marble, porphyry and granite floor is a rare surviving example of the way Roman architects used colour.

The Palazzo Massimo alle Terme (Alamy)

3. Meet the Romans at the Palazzo Massimo

Once you’ve got a sense of what the Romans could do, it’s time to meet them, face-to-face. The Palazzo Massimo is by no means the only place to see Roman sculpture, but it is the most intelligently organised collection. You’ll learn far more here than ever you would wandering the over-stuffed, under-explained rooms at the Vatican Museums. Best of all are the unflinching portraits from the 1st century BC. Back then, unvarnished honesty was a virtue, and it shows in every depiction. Wolf-faced matriarchs, careworn senators, calculating generals: they’re all so fleshy and vital you can almost feel their breath on your skin.

Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (Alamy)

4. Dodge the crowds at the Sistine Chapel

The queues to get into the Vatican Museums can be half a mile long. But it’s absolutely worth going to see one of Rome’s best attractions. Inside, lie the two masterpieces of Rome’s High Renaissance. First up is Raphael’s beautifully-choreographed ensemble piece, The School of Athens , in the Stanze di Raffaello. Then you’ll see Michelangelo’s muscular, Old-Testament melodrama explode across the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. To enjoy them without being jostled, you’ve got two options. Either book a private tour that starts 80 minute before the doors open to the public. Or reserve a (much cheaper) timed ticket for entry two hours before they close; just as crowds begin to thin. Stay in the Sistine Chapel until you’re ordered to leave at the very end of the day and — for a couple of awestruck minutes — you may even have the place to yourself.

Best time to visit the Vatican

La Tazza d’Oro (Alamy)

5. Sip an espresso at Tazza d’Oro

There’s so little time and so much to see in Rome. But that’s okay, because wherever you are in the city a tiny cup of Roman rocket fuel awaits, just around the corner. Drink your espresso at the counter like a local for the lowest prices (typically, €1-€1.50), and for the most potent mix of atmosphere and rich, smooth, inky flavour, direct your flagging steps to Tazza d’Oro, by the Pantheon.

The Church of St Augustine (Alamy)

6. Catch Caravaggio at Sant’Agostina

Not every masterpiece in Rome is under siege. Take, for example, the Madonna di Loretto in the church of Sant’Agostino. Every day, thousands of tourists hurry past its steps en route to the Piazza Navona, without giving it a second thought. But wander inside, and in the southwestern corner you’ll find Caravaggio’s gorgeous, 17th-century canvas, shrouded in ecclesiastical gloom. For €1, a slot machine supplies light — to reveal the Madonna and child, receiving two barefoot pilgrims. There are none of the usual Baroque niceties here — just a frank portrayal of faith, devotion and grinding poverty. No wonder ordinary Romans loved it.

You can unleash your inner Audrey Hepburn much more safely with a guided moped tour (Alamy)

7. Hitch a ride on a Vespa

This is Italy . The normal rules of traffic don’t apply. So don’t try taking off on a Vespa like Audrey Hepburn did in Roman Holiday . Hop on the back instead, and let an experienced local do the driving, while you watch the eternal city whizz by. Join Scooteroma’s Foodie Vespa Tour and each stop is delicious too. The tours are tailored, both to your tastes and the time of day. But popular stops include Panella — one of the city’s oldest pasticcerie — for an espresso topped with sweet, eggy cream; and the market at Testaccio, aka the stomach of Rome, where you can snack on a panino stuffed with trippa alla Romana.

Rome’s most luxurious hotels

St Peter’s Basilica (Getty Images)

8. Make the pilgrimage to St Peter’s Basilica

Many visitors see St Peter’s Basilica as part of a guided tour, which starts with the Vatican Museums, and delivers them to Christendom’s largest church as the mid-morning crowds pour in. That’s fine: the sheer size of the place, straining heavenwards towards the 448ft tip of its lantern, is breathtaking, however many people are inside. But it’s even better at 7am, when it opens. There are no queues, entry is free, and at that time of day, as the first mass of the day is heard in the Chapel of the Choir, it feels more like a church than a tourist attraction — and is far more mysterious and ruminative as a result. Just be sure to wear clothing that covers your knees and shoulders, or else that dawn alarm call will have been for nought. You won’t be allowed in.

9. Go to Gladiator School

Two thousand years ago, entry to a gladiator school must have been a terrifying moment: a one-way ticket to perdition, with punishment beatings en route. Now, it’s a two-hour treat, guaranteed to fire the imaginations of any young warriors in your party. At a sand-floored outdoor training camp just off the Via Appia Antica you’ll learn some of the key moves of the gladiator’s craft, and spar with your fellow trainees. Then, in the Gruppo Storico Romano’s museum you can try on some of the historically accurate equipment. Nothing evokes the physical rigour of Roman combat more clearly than feeling the sudden weight of a grill-faced Murmillo’s helmet bearing down on your skull.

The Roman Forum (Getty Images)

10. Make sense of the Roman Forum

Nowhere is the density of Roman history more evident than in the Roman Forum. For centuries it was the beating heart of commerce, government and politics in the ancient city, and elements of it were repeatedly rebuilt. Problem is, unless you’ve spent weeks researching your visit, most of its extraordinary details will pass you by in a series of isolated pillars and inscrutable fragments. So if you book only one expert-guided tour during your trip, make it this one — and make sure it takes in the Palatine Hill, behind the Forum, as well. Up there, it’s not just the archaeology that’s fabulous: it’s the shade of the parasol-shaped pine trees too.

11. Feast on pizza and gelato

Anyone for blue cheese and chocolate gelato? Or how about a slice of strawberry, basil and mozzarella pizza? Proper foodies will roll their eyes at the thought of pizza and gelato, but if you know where to graze, they can be a palate-stretching delight. Convincing children to experiment will of course be a challenge. But book a private, three-hour tour with Local Aromas, and the company will tailor the stops to suit everybody’s tastes, on both banks of the Tiber. Meanwhile, DIY tasters will find Trastevere a happy hunting ground, thanks to innovative producers such as Fiordiluna and Seu Pizza Illuminati. Whatever your culinary predilections, you’ll find a foodie tour for you.

Mercati Traianei on the Via dei Fori Imperiali (Alamy)

12. Explore Trajan’s Market

If you’ve seen the dome of the Pantheon, you’ll already know that Imperial Roman architects were capable of a lot more than legionary forts and aqueducts. But at Trajan’s Market their work starts to look uncannily modern. Stacked up over six storeys, its brick-faced concrete walls were designed to shore up the steep-sided Quirinal Hill, as well as supplying offices, shops and giant meeting rooms for Trajan’s vast imperial forum. You can still pace the original streets, gawp at the soaring vaults, and nip in and out of the former bars on the via Biberatica, and all the while you’ll have the place more or less to yourself. Bafflingly, this giant, 2nd-century mall is almost tourist-free.

13. Relax on a rooftop terrace

You’ll find it a lot easier to climb the Spanish Steps if you’ve booked a table at Cielo, at the top. Decked out in natty red and white stripes, the Hotel de Ville’s rooftop bar and restaurant serves a killer negroni — and, better still, a 180-degree panorama of the city that includes the domes of both the Pantheon and St Peter’s Basilica. Save up, dress up, and book a table for sunset. La Dolce Vita awaits.

The Galleria Borghese (Getty Images)

14. Gawp at the Galleria Borghese

When it came to collecting great art, Scipione Borghese was a man of unconventional methods. He acquired Raphael’s The Deposition , for example, by having it stolen from a convent in Perugia, and lowered over the town walls by night. But there’s no doubting his eye for quality; and even though Napoleon bought a significant part of the collection in 1807, what remains in his Galleria Borghese is still magnificent. Bernini’s sculptures and Caravaggio’s paintings — notably the grisly portrait of David, dangling the severed head of Goliath — supply the highlights.

15. Sketch the city

Don’t just admire other people’s art. Make some yourself, on a guided sketching tour of Rome, run by American plein-air painter Kelly Medford. She’s lived and worked in the city since 2005, and for three hours she’ll share some of her favourite techniques with you, as well as her favourite scenes, such as the Theatre of Marcellus, beneath the Capitoline Hill. Every participant gets a handmade sketchbook and other other art materials — as well as the chance to slow down and really scrutinise their surroundings.

16. Have a private peek at Raphael

In Rome you’re never far from a secret little sanctuary. Just north of the Piazza Navona, for example, you can escape the crowds entirely by wandering into DART. This very Anglophile exhibition space has recently staged shows by Banksy, Basquiat, Bacon and Freud; but just as compelling as the art is its perfectly proportioned, 16th-century cloister. Designed by Renaissance maestro Donato Bramante, the first-floor loggia is home to DART’s café, and it’s a soothing place to sit while the architecture riffs on classical themes around you. Don’t spend the whole time outdoors, though. Through an internal window in the lounge you can look straight onto Raphael’s fresco of the Sibyls , in the Basilica di Santa Maria della Pace next door.

17. Swim on the Monte Mario

Summer in Rome can be glorious: a sweltering but sensual dance between deep shade and dazzling sunlight, with every cold drink as sacred as the next monument. Sometimes, though, you just have to give up and take shelter — and there’s no more luxurious spot than poolside at the Rome Cavalieri. Set on the steep-sided Monte Mario, just west of the Centro Storico, the hotel is swathed in leafy gardens and blessed with three outdoor pools. Good news: if they’re willing to pay, visitors can join the hotel’s guests on the sunloungers and in the water. Yes, it’s expensive. But in the heat of July and August an afternoon here will be as delicious as a Michelin-starred meal.

Foot of Emperor Constantine at the Capitoline Museums (Alamy)

18. Meet Constantine at the Capitoline Museums

Here’s another way to tune into the mindset of ancient Rome: by gazing at the fragments of the Colossus of Constantine. They were once part of a 40ft seated statue honouring Constantine I, the last great Roman Emperor, and they now line the Palazzo dei Conservatori in the Capitoline Museums. The head alone is 8ft high. Each foot is more than 6ft long. Yes, of course, there are many other exquisite works indoors, many of them complete. But that doesn’t diminish the impact of these gigantic chunks of marble. If ever there was a statue to proclaim the power and self-confidence of the Roman state, even in the troubled 4th century AD, this must have been it.

19. Delve into the Domus Aurea

Rome is like a layer cake. There’s always something interesting underneath — and never more so than when you burrow beneath the remains of the Baths of Trajan, and find the Domus Aurea. This “golden house” was in fact a vast palace complex, built at breakneck speed by the Emperor Nero, and then buried and/or obliterated by his successors. Its frescoes caused a sensation when they were rediscovered during the Renaissance. Book ahead for one of the guided weekend tours and you can see them too — with virtual-reality headsets on hand to deepen the sense of colour and decadence.

View of the city from the terraced gardens of Colonna Palace (Getty Images)

20. Marvel at the Colonna Palace

In almost any other city, the Colonna Palace would be an A-list attraction. Home to the Colonna family for 800 years, it contains one of Rome’s finest private art collections, as well what is arguably Europe’s most glittering room. And yet, because this is Rome, few visitors even know it’s there. So book a guided tour on Friday or Saturday, and enjoy paintings by Ghirlandaio, Bronzino and Tintoretto among others, with only a handful of other visitors to distract you. Many of the paintings hang in the Great Hall, beneath an enormous fresco of the 16th-century battle of Lepanto. Family member Mercantonio II Colonna was Admiral of the Papal fleets in this decisive sea battle against the Turks.

The famous Trevi Fountain (Getty Images)

21. Toss a Coin into the Trevi Fountain

There’s no way you’ll get to the end of this list in a single trip. So make sure your final evening passeggiata takes in the Trevi Fountain. Bring a coin, face away from the sculpted wrestling match of mermen and sea-horses, and toss the money with your right hand over your left shoulder, into the water. Now, according to tradition, fate demands that you’ll be coming back to Rome. And you’ll be able to tick off a few more of Rome’s magnificent monuments when you do.

excursions from la romana

When planning a trip to Rome, first-time visitors usually want to check the Colosseum and the Vatican off their lists, throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, and indulge in heaping plates of pasta, pizza, and gelato. And while those things are all worth doing, there’s so much more to do in the Eternal City.

Just consider that aside from the Vatican, Rome is home to more than 900 churches — and many of them contain precious works of art. And the Colosseum is just one of many archeological sites where you can learn more about the Roman Empire. But Rome is far from stuck in the past, and some of the best things to do include seeing modern and contemporary art exhibitions, admiring 1930s architecture, spotting street art, and checking out the city’s swanky new hotels.

Of course, Romans are passionate about food and wine, and everyone has their favorite places for pizza, pasta, gelato, coffee, wine, and cocktails. In fact, it would be easy to plan a whole trip to Rome around meals and aperitivos. You could start your day with a cappuccino at an old-school café, twirl spaghetti carbonara, sip an Aperol spritz at a rooftop bar, eat award-winning pizza, and sample some of the city’s most unusual gelato flavors all in a day.

Having lived in Rome for nearly five years and having visited many times before that, I’ve tried to take advantage of every chance I can get to visit the best museums and archeological sites, explore under-the-radar neighborhoods, peek inside aristocratic palaces, see masterpieces inside churches, and eat my way across the city. But don’t take it from me — I’ve also tapped a couple of in-the-know locals who run some of Rome’s best tour companies for their recommendations. Read on for the 20 best things to do in Rome.

Visit archeological sites beyond the Colosseum.

Tomás Guardia Bencomo/Getty Images

As an archeologist and CEO of the luxury tour company Roma Experience , Elisa Valeria Bove knows all the best archeological sites in and around Rome. Her personal favorite? The Appia Antica and Quintili’s Villa , which is found along the ancient Roman road. “Once called the 'road of fire', for me it is the road of wonders,” she says, calling it “the most romantic and imposing archeological site of Rome.” About a half-hour drive outside the center of Rome, these sites draw only a tiny fraction of the amount of people that crowd the Colosseum, so visiting them is a much more relaxed experience.

Embrace the coffee culture.

piola666/Getty Images

“Every Italian has their neighborhood bar, and Retrobottega is mine,” says Annie Ojile, who runs the Vespa tour company Scooteroma and has been living in Rome for more than 15 years. “I like to have a cold coffee, especially in the summer months, so I’ve fallen in love with espresso tonic, which is espresso on ice with tonic water. It’s fabulous and refreshing.”

For an old-school Italian coffee bar, Bove recommends La Tazza d’Oro near the Pantheon, which opened in 1944 and still roasts its own beans. “In the summer you can have an amazing coffee granita with whipped cream — exactly what’s needed during a tour,” she says.

See artistic treasures at the world’s oldest museum.

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

While the Vatican Museums may be more famous, the Capitoline Museums atop the Capitoline Hill are actually the oldest museum in the world. “Crossing each room, you have a clear idea of the grandiosity of the Roman civilization, from the monarchy, passing through the republic and imperial eras,” says Bove, calling it “the evolution of Rome in one museum — a trip within a trip.” Don’t miss the incredible panoramas of the Roman Forum.

Try the quartet of Roman pastas.

The most classic Roman pastas are essentially variations of the same recipe. Cacio e pepe is made with just pecorino and pepper. Add guanciale (pork cheek) and you’ve got la gricia . Add an egg to la gricia and you’ve got carbonara . Substitute tomato sauce for the egg and you’ve got amatriciana . Try them all at a quintessentially Roman restaurant like Da Enzo al 29 , Checco Er Carettiere , or Salumeria Roscioli and decide which one is your favorite.

Picnic in the shadow of ancient aqueducts.

TFILM/Getty Images

On sunny days — especially weekends and public holidays — locals love to pack a picnic or pop into a deli to grab a sandwich and head out to one of the city’s green, leafy parks. While the most famous and centrally located park is the Villa Borghese, the Parco degli Acquedotti is a local favorite — and you can reach it on the metro. “A stroll here is stepping into the past, a perfect place for a picnic, to run or cycle,” says Bove. “The owners of this spot are the aqueducts: six of the 11 of the ancient city of Rome can be admired in this charming location.”

Shop for local souvenirs.

Courtesy of Booktique

Skip the ubiquitous shops selling cheap souvenirs made elsewhere and support small local businesses instead. “What I love about Booktique is that the owners’ history is with books and museum shops and they have a way to present all their treasures in a very interesting, cheeky, chic way,” says Ojile. “I buy every single gift there, and I’m not exaggerating at all. I also buy myself many gifts there — candles, hand soap, art for my house, canvas bags.” Booktique has two locations near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona.

Find all the Caravaggios in Rome.

Michelangelo Merisi (better known as Caravaggio) was one of the masters of Baroque painting. He was particularly known for using a technique called chiaroscuro , which is essentially the dramatic contrast between light and dark. There are about 25 of his works in Rome, many of which can be seen in museums such as Galleria Borghese , Palazzo Barberini , and the aforementioned Capitoline Museums, as well as churches like San Luigi dei Francesi, Santa Maria del Popolo, and Sant’Agostino. You could go on a treasure hunt looking for them all.

Stroll down Via Margutta, the artists’ street.

adisa/Getty Images

Tucked away between the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo, the charming, cobblestoned Via Margutta is known as the artists’ street because historically, it was a hub for artists, including Picasso, and there are still many art galleries there today. Bove calls it, “A peaceful place in the heart of Rome, just a few minutes from the crowded Spanish Steps, to get lost in the magnificent art galleries and discover the painters of Via Margutta.”

Via Margutta also has some fascinating cinematic history. Famed filmmaker Federico Fellini lived on this street (there’s a plaque on his building) and part of "Roman Holiday" starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck was filmed in the same apartment complex where Picasso lived. For a unique souvenir, stop by La Bottega del Marmoraro , where artisan Sandro Fiorentino still carves marble plaques by hand — many with witty phrases.

Visit a winery on the outskirts of the city.

Courtesy of Tenuta di Fiorano

Did you know there are vineyards and wineries on the edges of Rome? Bove’s favorite, Tenuta di Fiorano , is owned by Prince Alessandrojacopo Boncompagni Ludovisi. “It doesn’t happen every day that a prince welcomes you in his estate like an old friend,” she remarks. “I always admired the will he has to respect the history of his family and the territory where he decided to plant his vineyard, creating one of the excellences of Italy.”

Try unusual gelato flavors.

krblokhin/Getty Images

There are plenty of excellent gelaterias all over the city, but to taste some unusual flavors, you have to go to Torcè . “They have these unusual flavors like black sesame. I tried their tomato gelato, which is excellent with mozzarella. Torcè has done phenomenal things,” says Bove. In addition to their award-winning Majani chocolate gelato, they make savory flavors like gorgonzola, carbonara, and cacio e pepe.

Go street art hunting.

Marilla Sicilia/Archivio Marilla Sicilia/Mondadori Portfolio via Getty Images

“Street art has an expiration date — you never know how long the piece is going to last — so it’s always fun to go find new pieces,” says Ojile. “I just love gliding over the cobblestones on my cherry red wheels and making random stops when I find new or revisit old pieces of street art.” Ojile recommends exploring neighborhoods like Testaccio, Ostiense, and Garbatella, where there’s a proliferation of murals and paste art. You can also see some cool street art in San Lorenzo and Pigneto, which are two of the city’s most up-and-coming neighborhoods.

See an ancient monument and modern art at the Ara Pacis.

Photo Beto/Getty Images

“The year after I moved to Rome, they started building the Ara Pacis and I will always remember that there was this big scandal because it was the first new piece of architecture to be built in the historic center since Mussolini’s era,” Ojile recalls. The sleek, white building was designed by Richard Meier to house the ancient Altar of Peace built for Emperor Augustus. Upstairs you can see the ancient altar, while the lower level shows rotating exhibitions dedicated to modern art, design, cinema, or photography. “Now I live five minutes from it and they have really stellar photography shows and exhibitions and I absolutely love it. I go to every show,” Ojile says.

Peek inside aristocratic palaces.

sndr/Getty Images

Want to see how Roman nobility lived? A handful of aristocratic palaces have been opened up as museums, allowing visitors to glimpse at their incredible art collections and opulent décor. Palazzo Colonna , which was a filming location for "Roman Holiday," is open on Friday and Saturday mornings. Palazzo Doria Pamphilj , meanwhile, has a gorgeous hall of mirrors inspired by the one at Versailles. Villa Farnesina in Trastevere contains breathtaking frescoes by Raphael.

Have an aperitivo at a rooftop bar.

At the end of the day, there are few experiences as magical as sipping a drink while watching the sunset over the city’s terracotta rooftops. Luckily Rome has plenty of rooftop bars to choose from. Bove’s pick is Otivm Roof Bar overlooking the Capitoline Hill, while Ojile raves about Terrazza Flores above El Porteño, a chic Argentinian restaurant. “This is where you’ll find me this summer soaking in the gorgeous views and sipping on my Porteño cocktail,” she says.

Try one of the city’s new wave of pizzerias.

Courtesy of Seu Pizza Illuminati

Pizza never went out of style, but lately there are more and more pizzerias upping the ante with creative offerings and top-notch quality. Rome has 10 pizzerias ranked among the best in Italy by the judges at Top 50 Pizza. Among the top are Seu Pizza Illuminati in Trastevere, which serves gourmet Neapolitan-style pizza by Pier Daniele Seu; 180 Grammi in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Centocelle, where pizzaiolo Jacopo Mercuro makes thin-crust Roman pizza with all kinds of creative toppings; and Sbanco , where the dough is somewhere in between Neapolitan and Roman style and the fritti (fried appetizers) are divine.

Sip cutting-edge cocktails at Drink Kong.

Courtesy of Drink Kong

For Ojile, a perfect night out starts with dinner in Monti at a restaurant like Rocco or La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali and ends at Drink Kong , which is ranked as one of the world’s 50 best bars. “It’s like an ‘80s dreamland with amazing cocktails,” she notes. The aesthetic is inspired by Japanese film noir and the wildly creative drinks are dreamt up by Irish-Italian bartender Patrick Pistolesi, who has been a fixture on the city’s nightlife scene for decades.

Book a stay at a luxury hotel.

Courtesy of Bulgari Hotel Roma

Rome is having a hospitality renaissance , with one luxe five-star hotel opening after the next. Some of the buzziest recent openings include It List hotel the Six Senses Rome , a sleek, modern hotel for wellness and sustainability-minded travelers; the Bulgari Hotel Rome , known for its gorgeous design and restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Niko Romito; the Rome Edition , which occupies a Rationalist building near Via Veneto and has a restaurant by the team behind cult-favorite spot Pianostrada (also on the It List); and Anantara Palazzo Naiadi , which has a cool rooftop restaurant and a gourmet restaurant on the ground floor.

Venture out to EUR.

Pino Pacifico/REDA&CO/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

The neighborhood known as EUR on the southern edge of Rome is a must-see destination for fans of 1930s and ‘40s Rationalist architecture. Mussolini built the neighborhood for the Esposizione Universale Romana of 1942, which never took place because of the Second World War. The most alluring building, architecturally speaking, is the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana (better known as the Colosseo Quadrato, or Square Colosseum), which now houses Fendi’s headquarters. EUR is also home to an amusement park called Luneur Park , the Nuvola Convention Center , and a location of Torcè.

See the Cinecittà Film Studios.

Gianmarco Dettori/Getty Images

Rome was once known as “Hollywood on the Tiber” because so many movies were filmed here. While some were filmed on location, many were shot at Cinecittà Studios , which is still an active filming studio. Part of it is open to visitors, including several exhibitions dedicated to film history (there’s one all about Fellini). You can visit the exhibitions on your own or sign up for a guided tour to learn more about the studio’s history and see the set of HBO’s Rome .

Sample wine at an enoteca.

Cavan Images/Getty Images

An enoteca is essentially just a wine bar, but they can range from simple and spartan to classy, elegant affairs. They usually have a wide selection of bottles and often a good variety of wines by the glass. Some just have small bites like meat and cheese boards, while others have full menus. For the best enoteca in Rome, Bove recommends Achilli al Parlamento , saying they have “an incredible selection of wine labels at cost price. If you are a lover of great wines, you can’t skip this place.”
