Ossi kaltti.

Ossi is the heart of Extreme Huskies. The idea of own company was born after he found the passion for the sport while working with sled dogs and ever since he has been chasing his dreams, making them into reality one after another.

Specializing in the long-distance races, Ossi has participated already on dozens of competitions and travels thousands of kilometers every season during training and competitions. Ossi is also the founder of the largest sled dog race in Finland: the Gold Rush Run.

Sini Kaltti

If Ossi is the heart of Extreme Huskies, Sini is the support system; she is the one who makes it possible for Ossi’s visions to become reality by managing daily operations both from home and at the kennel.

Sini is passionate about the dog’s wellbeing and is responsible for training puppies and safari dogs while Ossi is training the racing dogs.

Sini competes in the mid-range competitions with the junior teams to help them to gain confidence and experience for future competitions.

For us, dogs are family and working partners. There are approximately 90 Alaskan Huskies living on the kennel and all of them are friendly and happy to meet you!

AUTHENITIC & PEACFUL

To ensure the most authentic and relaxing experience we never use snowmobiles on our safaris. It is always just you and the dogs. We also make all our meals from scratch to ensure the taste.

Happy husky ride.

We enjoyed the husky riding very much. It was cold in winter and there was only 500 meter ride available on the day of our visit. There are 106 huskies in the park and each one has his/her own name. The ride was fast and fun!

Life at the kennels.

Majuri, Bolt, Simba, Nils Holgersson, Usva, Mufasa, Martta, Muru, Kiela, Dora and the rest of our 140 furry hounds are waiting for you!

Lammintupa is the home of 150 sled dogs. Alaskan Huskies, Siberian Huskies and also some Alaskan Malamutes. Huskies have been used as sled dogs for hundreds of years, and here at Lammintupa for over 10 years. Huskies love running, and going to work is the best moment of the day for them. Their eager bark welcomes you from afar!

All our dogs have names. The guides who work for us know all our dogs by name and as individuals with their own characteristics, which is plenty to remember! There are 2–3 guides who work at our kennel all year round, and a few seasonal guides who have worked at our shelter in many winters. The guides have the primary responsibility for the daily care and well-being of the dogs. In winter, several new guides always join the group to work at Lammintupa for the season. The main guides always show the newcomers the ropes at the kennels.   

The kennels

Our kennels are kept clean, and we tidy them every day. Each dog has its own kennel, although bitches in particular often like to sleep in the same kennel with another dog. Most of our kennels are insulated and plenty of bedding is used in all of them. We also have heated kennels for small puppies.

In general, the dogs always live in the same building with the same dog friends (2–4 dogs). The dogs also work with this same group as a team. Dog teams are generally selected based on their character traits. We have 6 dogs running in one team. Usually 2 females as front dogs and 4 males behind them.

New sled dogs

We breed and raise our huskies ourselves, and all the puppies stay with us. The dogs selected for breeding have good work motivation and character, and are easy to handle. Males other than those used for breeding are generally castrated. New puppies are bred according to our needs. We always think a few years ahead, how many dogs are approaching retirement age, and that determines how many litters we need. Usually there have been 1–4 litters per year, depending on the size of the litters. Our customers can get to know the puppies usually from about 6 weeks of age onwards. This has been a great benefit in the socialization of the puppies. 

Most of our dogs begin working at the age of one. However, some individuals may take 2–3 years before they are qualified sled dogs. The dogs live with us all their lives, from puppyhood to retirement age. Retired dogs (approx. 10–15 years old) are valuable teachers for younger sled dogs, and are allowed to take light runs with the puppies in the sled team, as long as they remain healthy.

The training of the sled dogs normally starts in September–October, so that our dogs are in shape before the start of the season. In winter, a record is kept of the distances run by the dogs and the number of their days off. All dogs have at least one day off per week during the season. The youngest and oldest dogs work less.

Our dogs eat quality food all year round. In winter, the dogs begin their morning with a fulfilling drink. Two hours before their work starts, the dogs are given a drink of warm water mixed with plenty of fatty meat. They are also offered meaty broth during the day between runs, when they are having a break. The actual feeding takes place in the afternoon after the dogs’ working day is over. Their food consists of high-quality domestic dry food, vitaminized fatty meat and liquid. Once a week, the dogs also get salmon, and reindeer bones to chew on. In summer, the dogs’ diet consists mostly of salmon, and it is supplemented with dry food, meat and bones.

Winter temperatures in Finland are typically below zero and it might be windy, especially by the sea. We recommend wearing warm winter clothes as for any other winter sport. You can best protect yourself in the traditional way by wearing two or three layers of warm clothes under a windproof jacket and trousers. The best winter boots are long and warm. Remember to wear a warm hat and gloves!

Our huskies know how to enjoy the snow and they love running. Let our huskies offer you the experience of a lifetime exploring the winter wonderland!

The one-hour crash course includes fascinating stories about the history of Siberian Huskies, their use and the handling of the dogs and the sled.

The programme continues with the hurly-burly of the wagging tails of our friendly huskies ready to take you for a spin! Try mushing (driving) the sled yourself and feel the primeval power of the ancient breed (mushing allowed for over 12 year-olds only).

Candlelight dinner for two – the Finnish way

A romantic Arctic experience for couples. We start with a hot welcome drink and getting to know our friendly huskies in the fire-lit kennel. We harness the teams together, and after a short introduction in the handling of the team, it’s time to explore the arctic blue darkness of the ancient spruce forest.

Mushing a team of huskies in the magical atmosphere of blue darkness and soft white snow is an unforgettable experience. Husky sled is one of the most ancient means of transport, and the quiet of the sleeping forest creates an intimate atmosphere. When we return to the kennel and say good night to the dogs, a delicious dinner is cooked for you on open fire in the kammi.

Loihakka is Pantou (The accessible tourism directory) listed supplier. The staircase of the kammi is high and outhouse is not accessible  for people who have reduced mobility .

OPENING HOURS Our huskies love their work and we love to see them wagging their tails and eager to go. For this reason,  our kennel is open on bookings only : as pack leaders, we want to make sure that our dogs have at least one full day of rest all to themselves.

ABOUT US Happy Huskies is a small family business located right in the vicinity of Ivalo town center. We offer unique, personalized husky activities for small groups, families, and couples year-round. Since our husky farm is much smaller than traditional husky service providers (generally 50 to 200 dogs),  my niche is specifically private visits as luxury experience in the middle of our calm forest scenery. With our husky adventures, you can experience the thrill of dog sledding, witness the beauty of Northern Lights, go hiking with a husky companion, or simply spend time getting to know our friendly pack. Do you want to be among the first to enjoy husky sledding this season?

Before the winter season starts in earnest, our huskies are already training their conditioning – come and immerse yourself in the life of huskies through our special early winter husky experiences. During these activities, you’ll have the chance to pet them, capture photos, and hear interesting stories from their dedicated trainers. We can promise an abundance of cuteness!

The longest of our early winter husky tours is a 3 km safari across fields and through forests. This tour allows you to play the role of the musher, taking control of your team of excited huskies. Concerned about the absence of snow? No worries; we’ve stored ample snow from the previous season to guarantee a genuinely unique experience, even if natural snow is scarce.

All of our husky tours start at Apukka Resort, located at Tutkijantie 28, 96900 Rovaniemi. Transfers to and from the city center and Santa Claus Village are included. Most of the tours occur in the immediate vicinity of the resort, and we utilize private trails and lands.

When can i experience husky tours.

Most of our early winter tours kick off on November 13th, with a few exceptions. We recommend checking the details for each tour individually by clicking on their respective listings on this page.

Will there be snow in November?

November marks the start of winter in Lapland, and typically, the first snowfall has already occurred by then. However, temperatures can fluctuate, causing natural snow to come and go. Fortunately, we’ve stockpiled snow from the previous season and employ snow cannons to ensure you can enjoy wintry activities without worry.

Can I book a husky tour as a first-time dog sled driver?

Certainly! On tours where you can lead the dog sled, our seasoned mushers offer comprehensive guidance. Please keep in mind that children are not permitted to be mushers.

Do I need to bring extra warm clothes?

For our dog sledding adventures, we offer top-notch winter gear such as toasty boots, a snug thermal suit, mittens, and woolen socks. However, we suggest bringing your own thick winter hat, a cozy scarf, suitable thermal undergarments, and a comfortable mid-layer to guarantee a warm and comfortable experience on our tours.

Are the huskies treated ethically?

Yes! At Apukka Resort, the welfare of our huskies is a top priority. We’ve created a spacious dog yard for them, and there’s always a trainer just a bark’s distance away. They even receive regular visits from a dog massage therapist (a human who massages dogs, not a dog acting as a masseur!) to ensure their muscles stay in peak condition. Our trainers will be happy to provide you with more information during one of our husky tours.

Even though our huskies are very kind, it’s important to instruct kids to avoid sudden movements or yelling that might startle our dogs.

How do I get to Apukka from Rovaniemi city / Santa’s Village?

The price of the activity includes transfers with our shuttle bus.

Rovaniemi city center bus stop: Korkalonkatu 36, Rovaniemi, close to Apukka Rovaniemi City Apartments.

Santa Claus Village: Santa Claus Village’s bus stop by the main road (road E75).
