6 IKEA Shopping Hacks Experts Want You to Know Before Your Next Visit

ikea store visit

If you're planning an IKEA trip in the next couple of months, you'll want to ensure that you're making the most of your visit, no matter whether you've frequented the retail store just once or have shopped there dozens of times.

To ensure that you're well-equipped with key shopping hacks that will make your next IKEA outing even more productive, we spoke with Paul Anderson, a home furnishing and retail design leader at IKEA U.S.

Below, he shares six insider tips that you'll want to file away for your next store visit.

Meet the Expert

  • Paul Anderson is the home furnishing and retail design leader at IKEA U.S .

Get the Scoop on What's New at the Store Entrance

Upon entering an IKEA store, you may be tempted to immediately make your way to a specific department to check a few items off your list, but don't forget to take a moment to browse the entrance area, Anderson urges.

There, you'll find information on existing product offerings, store activities, and what’s new at IKEA. Getting a sense of can't-miss recent releases will help you better plan your shopping trip and ensure you don't miss out on these exciting items.

Be Strategic About the Day You Visit

Unsurprisingly, IKEA stores are extra crowded on weekends, so you may be better off saving your shopping trip for your next weekday off of work.

"Midweek is the best time to shop if you want more space to experience our many home furnishing solutions and ideas in the showroom, or just have less time to commit," Anderson says.

That said, don't worry too much about items being out of stock, no matter which day you visit IKEA, Anderson notes that products get replenished on a daily basis. He also says that weekends at IKEA can still be lots of fun if you don't mind a crowd—bring the whole family and enjoy a meal at the IKEA store restaurant.

Make Note of Some of IKEA's Lesser-Known Items

When you picture an IKEA, large home furnishings and small accent pieces likely come to mind immediately, but note that the store offers more than just these basics.

Anderson notes that IKEA sells a series of smart home products that are multifunctional, including the STARKVIND side table , which doubles as an air purifier. In the market for smaller gadgets? IKEA sells wireless and portable chargers, too.

IKEA's Return Policy Is Quite Generous

If you live far away from an IKEA, don't stress about having to plan a return visit within the next couple of weeks, should you change your mind about a purchase once you arrive home.

Anderson notes that customers can return new and unopened products for up to a year, as long as they also have a receipt on hand. Opened products can be returned within 180 days of purchase as long as they're also accompanied by a receipt.

But that's not all—if you're in the process of redecorating your home, you can sell pre-loved IKEA furniture back to your local store in exchange for store credit through the retailer's Buy Back & Resell program . Note that IKEA will only accept items that are still fully assembled and have not been hacked or altered in any way. Upholstered pieces are also not eligible, either.

Don't Forget to Shop for Textiles

Again, while most people associate IKEA with furniture items galore, Anderson encourages shoppers to browse the retailer's home textiles, too—offerings are updated each season.

"I always stop in and check out the cushion covers to find new patterns and textiles at the best prices," he says. "You can never have too many decorative cushion covers to update your space!"

IKEA Releases New Collections Four Times Per Year

Note that IKEA releases limited product collections four times per year. These collections are centered around major U.S. holidays, meaning they're a great opportunity to stock up on all kinds of seasonal goods , ranging from Christmas decor to cozy fall items.

You'll be able to find numerous items in various budgets, so you have a range to choose from.

As IKEA plans to open more US stores, here are some tips on how to save on your next visit

IKEA is growing its presence in the U.S.

The ready-to-assemble furniture company on Thursday announced plans to add eight new stores in the U.S., in addition to nine plan and order points (smaller stores dedicated to kitchen, bedroom, and living room planning) and 900 pick-up locations for online purchases.

The company has yet to nail down the locations for the new stores but is looking to launch in cities where the company already has a presence as well as new markets, according to Javier Quiñones, IKEA U.S.’s CEO and chief sustainability officer.

The $2.2 billion investment over the next three years should make IKEA’s products accessible to more Americans through both digital and physical storefronts.

"Hopefully this is only the beginning," Quiñones told USA TODAY. "We expect to see many more IKEAs in many new formats closer to people."

IKEA is known for its warehouse-like shopping experience (the stores are 320,000 square feet on average).

Whether you're in the market for a bookcase or a bed frame, there are ways to stretch your dollar when you shop at IKEA. Here are a few tips on how to make the most of your next IKEA trip.

How many IKEA stores are in the US?

IKEA currently has 50 stores across the country. You can find your nearest location here .

Over the last year, the Swedish home furnishings retailer has opened 15 pick-up locations and two plan and order points.

Shop early

You can shop at IKEA by visiting a store or online through its website or app. If you place your order online, IKEA offers delivery service  within the 48 contiguous U.S. states.

But if you plan to visit the store, shopping early usually offers the best opportunity to avoid the crowds and long check-out lines.

Go in with a plan

You're probably familiar with IKEA's cavernous and maze-like blue stores. It's easy to get distracted from your shopping goal in a store so big, so make sure to have a plan, said Kristin McGrath, editor at the deal website RetailMeNot.

"IKEA is not set up to just be a zip-in and buy a few candles kind of place," McGrath said. "It is a place you're going to be spending several hours."

Join the IKEA Family loyalty program

IKEA has a free loyalty program with benefits such as  5% off eligible in-store purchases .

IKEA Family members immediately get 5% off their purchase at checkout when they scan their card or present their IKEA Family number at the store.

"(It's a) very easy way to save," McGrath said. "If you're spending a lot of money, 5% can be a lot and the program has got other benefits too."

IKEA Family members also have access to exclusive offers, 90-day price protection and free coffee or tea every time they visit.

Shop IKEA's As-Is section

IKEA's As-Is section features a variety of items at a reduced price, from discontinued pieces to customer returns to showroom displays.

"I've found things you know upwards of 50% off in this section," McGrath said. It's almost like a little garage sale within IKEA."

McGrath recommended shoppers start their IKEA visit at the As-Is section.

"You might find something like a central furniture piece that you can build the rest of your room around because you found that really good deal on that really discounted furniture item," McGrath said.

IKEA this year launched As-is online, a service that   allows customers to browse and reserve gently used products online for in-store pick up.

Look for deals on the site

If you're shopping online, check the deals tab on the website's homepage to save some bucks on your order.

IKEA is currently offering up to $100 off on select outdoor furniture until May 2.

I visited one of Ikea's new mini 'plan and order' stores, and it felt like a tiny version of Home Depot

  • Ikea is embarking on a $2 billion expansion of its US operations.
  • Part of Ikea's strategy is a new, smaller store for shoppers redesigning whole rooms.
  • I visited one of these new stores to see what it's like to shop there.

Insider Today

Ikea is spending billions to expand in the US, and a big part of its plans rest on small stores.

Most shoppers probably think of huge warehouses filled with everything from kitchen towels to coffee tables to Swedish meatballs when they think of the retailer. But in a $2 billion initiative it announced earlier this year, Ikea said that it would open nine "plan-and-order" stores in the US.

Each store is a fraction of the size of the Ikea you're probably used to. While an Ikea warehouse can take up around 350,000 square feet, plan-and-order stores are a tiny fraction of that. The store I visited for this article, located in Arlington, Virginia, is about 5,000 square feet.

The plan-and-order stores are designed around model kitchens, bedrooms, and other complete packages of appliances and decor that shoppers can buy for rooms in their homes. It's a bit like walking through one of their famous catalogs . There aren't any cafeterias serving cheap lunches or extensive selections of picture frames, as you'd find at a conventional Ikea warehouse.

Instead, if you see something you like, you'll have to order it for delivery. Ikea calls the stores "showrooms" and staffs them with employees it says can answer questions or even plan a remodel.

I wanted to see what these mini-Ikea stores are like, so I headed to Arlington.

The nearest Ikea plan-and-order store to me is located in the Pentagon City neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC.

ikea store visit

The area is home to lots of shopping options, including a Costco, as well as Amazon's HQ2, so there's lots of foot traffic. There's also a Metro station just up the block.

The entrance is located inside a shopping mall.

ikea store visit

The signage outside of the main entrance suggests that this isn't a normal Ikea.

A sign outside of the entrance promoted discounted delivery.

ikea store visit

This store opened in August, and the sign promised free delivery on some orders if shoppers sign up for Ikea's loyalty program. At its regular stores, standard delivery starts at $19.

Once inside, I saw that I was going to learn some Swedish vocabulary, just like at other Ikea stores.

ikea store visit

This sign just inside the entrance clarifies that customers can plan purchases for delivery at this location.

A fully-furnished kitchen awaited as I headed into the store itself.

ikea store visit

It felt like walking into the first section of a normal Ikea store, which is where you find complete rooms for sale.

This whole kitchen, for example, runs $10,409 for the countertops, appliances, and hardware like cabinets and the sink.

There were also smaller furnishings for sale.

ikea store visit

Everything had a price label featuring the Swedish term for the item, such as this set of dinnerware, which cost $19.99.

You can buy these smaller items on their own, but Ikea will have to ship them to you.

ikea store visit

I would've bought one of these carbon steel frying pans if they had some on hand at the store, but an employee confirmed that I could only order it for delivery.

At publication time, Ikea's website said that the pan was out of stock at its main warehouse but could be bought from a store "in combination with a bigger article shipped by truck." Delivery on small orders normally "starts at $6," according to the website.

The focus at this store was definitely on the big-ticket items.

ikea store visit

You could buy this stainless steel sink for $285, for example.

There were room setups for a variety of budgets, such as this kitchen.

ikea store visit

It's Spartan, but there's a mini-fridge, portable conduction burner, and a sink, among other basic elements of a kitchen.

There was an emphasis on how affordable many of the room setups are.

ikea store visit

The aforementioned kitchen costs less than $2,000.

Toward the back of the store, there was a limited selection of smaller items in-stock that you could buy.

ikea store visit

Most of these items were tool sets, lightbulbs, and other items that you might need if you were ordering a complete room at this store.

There were a few quirky, cheap items like you'd find in a much larger Ikea store.

ikea store visit

This wire phone holder would set you back $2.99.

As I wandered around, this Ikea store began to feel more like a Home Depot, Lowe's, or another home improvement store.

ikea store visit

There was a respectable selection of faucets in case you wanted to customize one of the room setups or buy one on its own.

These countertop samples especially reminded me of home improvement stores.

ikea store visit

There was a range of styles and materials to choose from.

There were a few employees in the store when I visited on a weekday afternoon.

ikea store visit

You can make an appointment with an employee to talk about a renovation project, according to Ikea.

"The all-new IKEA Arlington Plan and order point will allow customers to meet with professional consultants who can help them optimize their living and working spaces," Raquel Ely, Market Manager for IKEA U.S., said in August when this store opened.

A few touchscreens were stationed around the store to provide information on the products.

ikea store visit

This screen provides details about Ikea's storage and wardrobe offerings.

There were also reminders throughout the store that items could be purchased for delivery.

ikea store visit

I was amused by the plug here for an assembly service, given the reputation that Ikea furniture has for being tough to assemble. (Some people even hire gig workers to do it instead of assembling furniture themselves.)

It wasn't all kitchens, though. This store also sells mattresses...

ikea store visit

Pillows and comforters were also on offer.

...as well as wardrobes and other storage...

ikea store visit

The wardrobes all contained clothes, accessories, and other items to provide a better sense of what they might look like in-use.

...and full bedroom setups.

ikea store visit

If you're one of those people who likes to lay down in the beds at Ikea, this smaller store has you covered.

I had fun exploring the storage section, particularly the wardrobes.

ikea store visit

I couldn't help but take this sticker's advice.

If I was renovating a house or condo, this would be a great place to find furniture.

ikea store visit

This set of drawers inside a wardrobe made me wonder why I don't have something like this.

I was also impressed by this wallpaper featuring Benjamin Franklin blowing a bubble with bubble gum.

ikea store visit

It wasn't clear whether you could order it at the store, but I did find it afterward on Etsy.

On your way out of the store, you get one more Swedish lesson.

ikea store visit

"Hej da" means "See you soon."

Overall, Ikea's plan-and-order store seemed like a decent place to shop, but I was a little confused by this particular location.

ikea store visit

I wasn't expecting the typical Ikea experience, but I wasn't quite sure who this exact location is supposed to serve.

On the one hand, it's located in an area with lots of foot traffic, particularly people who have money to spend.

ikea store visit

Mallgoers, Amazon employees, Pentagon workers, and commuters are all likely to pass by this store.

On the other, many of the people who live in Pentagon City rent apartments, limiting the appeal of this store.

ikea store visit

You're probably not looking to overhaul your kitchen countertops if you're renting a place in one of the nearby apartment buildings.

This fancy new apartment building just opened right next to the store, for instance.

ikea store visit

Perhaps shoppers coming from farther away who own houses deeper into Virginia will stop by this new location, though many of them might be tempted to just drive to an Ikea warehouse.

If I ever buy a home and embark on a renovation, visiting one of these stores would be useful.

ikea store visit

Until then, I'll stick to the two full-sized Ikea stores in the DC area.

Virtual Reality Showroom

For IKEA, we created a high-definition, interactive showroom that uses the immersive power of virtual reality to offer an innovative 3D product experience. With new ways of exploration and visualization, customers can bring IKEA rooms to life – opening their mind and home to new possibilities.

To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings for the “Vimeo” service.

A new dimension for democratic design

IKEA believes that design should be for all – "democratic design" they call it. Demonstrated by the plethora of showrooms housing thousands of different items, there's something to everyone's liking along IKEA's walkway. Yet, customers have to wait until they get home and unwrap their flat packs to truly become part of the IKEA experience. As the first digital agency worldwide, Demodern set out to engage IKEA shoppers and democratize the actual store visit as well – with an in-store VR application.

Heart of the hub

The Virtual Home Experience lies at the center of IKEA's home furnishing hub – a playful interior lab where IKEA focuses on inspiring and co-creation with its customers. The VR experience works like a creative primer by inviting them to visualize different combinations. It sets customers free to think beyond the given things, making the most out of their visit to the hub and helping them truly find their very own room for life.

Heart of the hub

A space for ideas

Insights can't be had on-demand. However, virtual reality can act as a form of engineered serendipity, and improve people's chances of having them.

VR-induced creativity

The application provides an immersive and emotional product experience that revolutionizes the way customers engage in interior decoration. After slipping into IKEA's virtual showroom, visitors are able to explore and configure furniture items and their environmental context in real-time. In the blink of an eye, they can try different fabrics, swap the wall color and even change the time of day to see their combinations in a different light. It empowers the visitor to visualize their own taste, inspire and expand their mind with new ideas.

VR-induced creativity

Context over technology

Given the context, the Virtual Home Experience pushes VR as the most meaningful and effective platform for getting into a creative mental state – providing a radical experience that pulls visitors out from the walkway and puts them into a full-scale flow of colorful emotions and exciting surprises.

Binaural immersion

Welcomed by IKEA's very own speaker and engulfed in high-definition 3D spatialized sound, the room and its environment come to life while the user can truly feel part of the space.

Context over technology

Oculus in the wild

As the first public VR installation of its kind, various aspects of the application and the hub had to be rethought to make the Oculus Rift ready for unattended use at a store that welcomes thousands of people a day. Special attention was given to anything, from easy on-boarding, health notifications to foolproof interactions and smooth cable management. Installed as a prototype in Germany's most vibrant city, Berlin, IKEA and Demodern source learnings for further development on a daily basis – using application analytics as well as a broad scale of qualitative user feedback given directly at the point-of-sale.

Ikea Raum Vr 1

Virtual realism

Crafted in and composed of high-end, photorealistic 3D-renderings, the application provides a captivating 360º stereoscopic interior decoration experience with brilliant product staging – no matter the configuration.

Ikea Room Red

Harmonious user experience

The Virtual Home Experience intertwines a recognizable visual interface and motion design with touchless interactions. The result is a multi-dimensional signature brand and product experience that looks and feels like IKEA. Simple interactions and clever focus mechanisms allow the user to customize the room's interior and many facets of its environment in a glimpse.

Ikea Demodern Vr Application 2

Product of democracy

As trends and seasons change, so does the Virtual Home Experience. It not only came to be through many iterations, it will also continue to evolve through a culture of collaboration between IKEA, its customers and Demodern. The intimate moment inside the virtual room leverages an opportunity to co-create with visitors – letting users contribute to the development of the room by submitting feedback from within the experience.

Ikea Navi Mumbai store opens today: How to register for visit

Sweden-based Ikea, one of the world’s largest furniture retailer, has opened its second store in India on Friday. The new store is located in Navi Mumbai and is its first big format store in Maharashtra.

The store, built on an area spanning over 5.3 lakh square feet is situated near Turbhe local railway station. Reports suggest that the store has over 7,000 varieties of home furnishing products.

However, customers will not be able to visit the store without a pre-booking — a step that has been taken by Ikea in order to prevent crowding amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Customers will have to visit the store in pre-booked slots, which can be availed through prior registration on Ikea’s website. After the booking process, customers will be allotted a day and time slot to visit the store.

As per Ikea's website, the slots are full for the next two weeks. Since the company is currently accepting two-week advance bookings, the availability of slots is likely to change on a daily basis.

“We are currently following a two-week advance booking opportunity. So new slots open up every day. Further, due to the addition of extra slots or any cancellations, the availability of slots is likely to change on daily basis,” Ikea said on its website.

How to pre-book store visit:

If you are interested in visiting the Ikea Mumbai shop, first visit the official website of Ikea .

Go to the registration link on the website. Click on the ‘ register here ’ tab.

Submit the information required and your slot will be booked.

Ikea had opened its first India retail store in Hyderabad in August 2018, followed by online stores in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune. Ikea has also planned to set up two city-centre stores in Mumbai, according to a company official. Published By: Koustav Das Published On: Dec 18, 2020 --- ENDS ---
