With close proximity to major cities, Berks County affords countless opportunities for exciting day trips and overnight getaways aboard deluxe motorcoaches.

“We can plan a trip anywhere you want to go,” says John Kowalski, General Manager for Bieber Tourways, a Kutztown-based transportation company that offers feature tours, charters and scheduled service.

Getting Away for the Day

Locals seem to love visiting New York City all year long. Klein Transportation, a private deluxe motorcoach transportation provider headquartered in Douglassville, hosts sold-out trips to the Big Apple the first and third Saturdays of each month. Guests can enjoy free time sightseeing and shopping or attending a Broadway show. Klein Transportation assists with selecting and purchasing Broadway show tickets for customers’ added convenience.

“New York City is a fun, leisure travel trip,” says Adele Klein, a third-generation owner of Klein Transportation with her husband, Wayne. “We drop off travelers at a convenient location, and they don’t have to worry about parking or traffic hassles.”

Bieber offers 19 scheduled service trips daily from Berks County to New York City, in addition to charter and featured tours. The Monday-Friday clientele is mainly made up of commuters who live in Berks County and the Lehigh Valley but work in New York City. “Day Trippers,” as Kowalski calls them, take advantage of the flexible Saturday and Sunday trip schedules. “They decide when they want to go, what they’re going to do and when they want to come home. The last bus departs New York City for Berks County at 11:59 p.m.,” says Kowalski.

Area baseball fans enjoy outings to Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees games. During the regular baseball season, Bieber offers bus trips to Yankees home games on Saturdays and to Phillies home games on Sundays. “These are hot tickets, especially when the teams are winning,” Kowalski says. “These tours attract a full spectrum of ages. We have the die-hard fans who’ve been supporters for years, or we have the grandmas and grandpas taking their grandchildren to a professional ballgame for the first time.”

Other popular day-trip destinations include Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore, the Eastern shore, Peddler’s Village, dinner theaters and casinos in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Charter tours are ideal for nonprofit organizations, companies, schools and universities, as well as folks celebrating a birthday, anniversary or family reunion. A group leader has the freedom to customize a trip with an exclusive invitation list. “Atlantic City is a popular destination for charter tours,” Klein says. “If you take a group to a casino, each person gets slot pay coupons, making it an economical outing.”

When travelers want to take a longer break from their hectic, busy schedules, they can take advantage of overnight and extended getaways offered by both Bieber and Klein Transporation. Renowned destinations include the New England states; Savannah, Ga.; Mackinac Island, Mich.; Branson, Mo.; New Mexico; California; New Orleans; and more.

One of Klein’s personal favorite retreats is Mackinac (pronounced “Mackinaw”) Island, a motor vehicle-free isle that boasts beautiful Victorian homes, horse-drawn carriage rides and famous homemade fudge.  She likes the quaint location to escape from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan areas. “It’s such a unique, peaceful and relaxing place,” Klein says.

A two-night, three-day getaway to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, remains Klein Transporation’s top-selling overnight trip, thanks to the area’s breathtaking views. Travelers receive guided tours of the Niagara area and a Maid of the Mist boat ride.

What’s New in 2012?

Inspired by the Food Network, Bieber is hosting trips to please local food connoisseurs, including gourmet shopping tours to Little Italy and – literally – sweet Cupcake Tours to New York City and New Jersey. Cupcake lovers of all ages enjoy visiting famous bake shops featured on the network’s Cupcake Wars show: Sprinkles Cupcakes, The Cupcake Café, Crumbs Bake Shop and Magnolia Bakery, all in New York City, and Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, N.J. “We were surprised by how well the community responded to our first Cupcake Tour last September,” Kowalski says. “After each stop on the tour, people filled up the luggage bins with cupcakes to enjoy later at home.”

To commemorate its 55th anniversary this year, Klein Transportation is hosting an extended trip in August to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. It’s green. According to the Motorcoach Council, one motorcoach can remove as many as 56 passenger cars from highways, helping to reduce air, ground, water and noise pollution. Motorcoaches deliver more than 350 passenger miles per gallon of fuel, making them more fuel efficient than planes and trains.

I had to give 1 star because 0 wasn't an option...the worst service!! After 20yrs of my mother running/organizing/planning casino bus trips she is LEFT BEHIND IN ATLANTIC CITY! Yes, this transportation service left my 75 year old mother and her 3 elderly friends behind because the bus driver decided to leave early. They never contacted my mother or her friends of this change. in fact, the driver was so careless to not count the people (about 22 in all) that they didn't even realize that they left them behind! Never will use/plan a trip with them again. Awful. same goes to customer service and management for all the calls that i have left messages for a return phonecall..and nothing. Stay AWAY!!! Plan elsewhere!!!

The booking process was smooth and the reminder was also helpful. My friend and I got to sit together even though we bout our tickets at separate times. It was a very smooth and event free ride to Cape May. Linda the tour guide was awesome and the driver was a very good driver. Will book again!

Get some new busesPLEASE!! We were on a trip yesterday and it was the worst 2.5 hours I have ever spent on a bus, and I love bus rides!! It was soooooo loud something like their drive shaft- from what others were saying . It just screeched very loud the whole time!!! Thought I was going to loss my hearing!!!! Terrible time. PS Take that bus and retire it!!!

THE WORST!!!!!!!!! I hired them over a year in advance to shuttle my daughter's bridal party around, and then drive my guests to and from the venue. I emailed them days before my daughter's wedding to go over all the details and schedule. They never even showed up to pick up the bridal party at all. Each of the bridal party needed to find their own transportation to the venue. The "guest bus" did arrive on time and drove my guests to the venue.... BUT....the bus driver proceeded to tell my guests to leave the wedding reception 20 minutes early if they wanted a ride back. My guests all bee-lined out 20 minutes before the end for fear of not getting a ride back ,My band leader pleaded with my guests not to leave, but they were so afraid of being stranded. I eventually ended the reception 10 minutes early. They ruined the "finale" I had planned... I would never recommend them to anyone.

Our company's reputation can be harmed by individuals who exaggerate their situation, are disrespectful to employees, make threats and demands for money to be returned and are disorganized in providing our company with the proper information that we need to make a trip successful. We have been providing successful wedding and event transportation for many years and will continue to do so with the cooperation of organized trip planners. We are proud of our sales, operational and driving staff who offer exemplary customer service.

The bus driver is ridiculous. Follows only map quest directions. Takes forever worst bus trip ever. I don't think guy knows what is going on at all. He does know how to ride the break, I'll give him that.

Bus broke down and left us stranded on the side of interstate for hours waiting for replacement bus. Worst bus company ever! Do not use them unless you like breaking down and being stranded! Old, worn and outdated buses badly in need of maintenance and upgrades!

We took the bus from Baltimore to Kentucky. And back. The trip going up was okay but the bus broke down in the way back. We had to wait 2.5 hours on a Sunday afternoon for another bus to come. The bus driver Jay was good and somewhat apologetic.

Why didn't I come to yelp first when looking for a bus company?! Klein really disappointed me. Everything up to the day went smoothly - scheduling, payment, questions, etc. In advance of my wedding, I emailed the coordinator I'd been dealing with to alert her that the GPS would send the bus from the hotel to the church via Lincoln Drive - no place for buses - and asked them to come up with an alternate route in advance to avoid trouble. She responded to me somewhat snarkily stating that their drivers were all well aware that they should not drive on Lincoln Drive. Lo-and-behold, my groom and wedding party were ever-so-slightly late to the church for photos, while I waited anxiously in the bridal suite at the church. Obviously, I was not on the bus, because my groom and I had to ride separately. The driver had been pulled over for - you guessed it - driving on Lincoln Drive (no place for buses). The lateness was not a huge deal, but c'mon, this was a buzz kill at the very least. My poor groom, with all of his anticipation about getting to the church, and he had to hold tight on the bus while the driver got reprimanded by the police. The worst part of all of this is that I foresaw this problem and tried to prevent. After the wedding, I wrote to the company about this issue. The rep handled it terribly, stating that the company was not at fault for the lateness and offered nothing - not even a real apology for their mistake. It's a shame that they hit on the mark in so many areas, except for the most important one - getting my groom and wedding party to the church smoothly, without event! C'mon, Klein....

Every customer is very important to us and we certainly apologize when our employees make an error. However, the bride in this case has not provided all the facts. Our vehicles are equipped with a commercial fleet tracking devise that monitors and prints reports verifying the direction, time, and speed of every company vehicle for the safety of our passengers. We are very sorry this bride was unhappy, but we provided her with the vehicle tracking system report proving that the vehicle arrived on time at the pick up, but the groom was 12 minutes late boarding the vehicle which delayed departure for the church. This quickest route was chosen by the driver to arrive at the church on time... the coach arrived at the church at precisely 4:28pm - 2 minutes early. She did not want to accept the facts and made irresponsible threats verbally and in writing to us. Klein Transportation has been providing reliable and trustworthy transportation since 1957. We receive many testimonials from loyal and repeat customers available to view on our website.

Our Indoor Drumline just completed a trip to Dayton Ohio on Klein for WGI Finals, bus arrived to pick up students at school only a few minutes late, not a problem, we met Brian the bus driver who I must say is exactly what every bus driver should be like AWESOME. He opened up the bus and we began to load, once loaded and closed, we were off to Dayton, an 8 hour drive. Brian fit right in with our group of parents and joined us on several occasions for lunch/dinner/breakfast. He came in to view our students performance as well as other performances and he appears to have enjoyed himself as well. I know he told us he is scheduled to go out again for our school taking the Choir to Boston, they are in for a treat with this exceptional person. We were driven around by a quality driver who only once had to back the bus up to maneuver, he drove that bus as well as anyone could. Very happy with both the personality of Brian and the service that he & Klein Provided.

Stavropol Krai contains a large number of Caucasian health spas/sanatoria, which Russians have visited for over 200 years to treat various ailments (and just to escape the northern climate of Moscow and Saint Petersburg . As such, the region has been home to many of Russia's most prominent figures, including writers such as A.S. Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov, whose works have embedded the Pyatigorsk region into the national consciousness. A great read for anyone visiting the region is Lermontov's short novel, A Hero of Our Time , which is set in various areas in the south of the Krai.

Stavropol Krai is also notable for its exceptionally diverse climactic and topographic diversity. The environments range from sand deserts, to mud flats, to steppe, to forest, to mountains, to permafrost!

Because of its proximity to the conflict in Chechnya , the security situation is very poor in Stavropol Krai. While kidnappings are unlikely, there have been fairly regular bombings of public areas and official facilities in the southern cities and in Stavropol over the years. While a visitor is fairly unlikely to be victim to such terroristic attacks, the resulting crackdown has led to strict and unfortunately corrupt policing of the area — a visitor is quite likely to be harassed for bribes.

Stavropol Krai is the nearest “island of freedom” (in every sense) for residents of neighboring Chechnya and Ingushetia, who often visit this region for entertainment purposes (alcohol, nightclubs), therefore, it is not uncommon to run into them in entertainment establishments and at night on the streets. They are often armed with knives and pistols. To prevent conflicts, it is better to refrain from reacting to possible provocations on their part and simply walk away from them.

In Stavropol krai there are three GSM operators (MTS, Beeline, Megafon), one 3G-UMTS operator (Beeline) and one CDMA operator on 800 MHz frequency (RusSDO) and they often have offers that give you a SIM card for free or at least very cheap. If you are planning to stay a while and to keep in touch with Stavropolean and other North-Caucasus, South-Russians people, then you should consider buying a local SIM card instead of going on roaming. If you buy a SIM card from a shop you'll need your passport for identification. It only takes five minutes to do the paperwork and it will cost less than $10.
