But there is one thing I miss so much: Lake Tahoe.To be fortunate enough to live in Reno means you’re forty minutes from Tahoe. Mark Twain was encourage by co-workers to trek into the mountains to check out the lake. He rounded a corner and said, ” the fairest picture the whole earth affords.” Every season in Tahoe is bustling! Thanks for bringing back such good memories!

With more lakes than any other state (over three million in total!), Alaska offers picturesque waters at every turn. For jaw-dropping views and ample wildlife (salmon in the water, bears and moose on the shore) drop anchor at Salmon Lake just outside the small town of Nome.

Arizona | Lake Powell

Massive Lake Powell holds a whopping 24,322,069 acre feet  of water when full and is 558-feet at its deepest point. Essentially a giant canyon filled with crystal-clear waters, it offers striking dessert scenes as far as the eye can see and is a mecca for wakeboarding and house boating.

Arkansas | Horseshoe Lake

Horseshoe Lake may take its name from its unique shape, but it is better known for its ancient cypress trees. They bring an austere beauty to the Arkansas body of water, which is also a popular spot for fishermen in search of bass and panfish.

California | Lake Tahoe

Delaware | Silver Lake

Spend a day at Dover's Silver Lake and you'll feel as though you've stepped back in time. With no commercial outposts and blessedly few boaters it's an idyll spot for fishing, swimming, and picnicking. 

Florida | Lake Okeechobee

Near the tip of the Sunshine State lies Lake Okeechobee, Florida's largest freshwater lake. (It covers an impressive 730 square miles.) A popular spot for fisherman it's also surrounded by part of the Florida National Scenic Trail, making it an equally big draw for hikers and bikers.

Georgia | Lake Rabun

Northern Georgia's Lake Rabun enjoys translucent waters and an evergreen-strewn coast. As if that weren't enough, it's also the country's unofficial wooden boat capital. (Think gleaming Chris-Crafts, Stanleys, Eclos and more.) To see these beauties in full display you'll want to visit during the annual Wooden Boat Regatta , which takes place each July 4 th weekend.

Hawaii | Lake Waiau

Okay, Hawaii isn't exactly rife with lakes. But the Big Island's Lake Waiau makes up for that scarcity with a breathtaking reservoir perched 13,000 feet above sea level. (Arguably one of the highest lake in the United States.) Located a short distance from the famed Mauna Kea Observatories, it's a prime spot for stargazing by night.

Idaho | Redfish Lake

Redfish Lake originally took its name from the abundance of sockeye salmon that could be found there during spawning season. While the sockeye's numbers have dwindled (and can now only be caught on a catch and release basis) it's still an outdoorsman's oasis with ample fishing, hiking, and boating. Check-in to the Redfish Lake Lodge for a vacation complete with historic cabins, home cooked meals, and a charming general store.

Illinois | Lake Michigan

As one of North America's five great lakes, Lake Michigan needs no introduction. And while it bears the name Michigan, much of its shoreline is located within Illinois. Whether you take it in by boat on its vast waters or by the beach in downtown Chicago, this iconic lake is a site to behold.

Indiana | Lake Shafer

Near the town of Monticello, you'll find handsome Lake Shafer . A tourist favorite, Lake Shafer has ample campsites and hotels, plus boating, swimming, and fishing. Kids of all ages will also want to spend a day at Lake Shafer's Indiana Beach, a frolicking amusement park with a Ferris wheel perched right along the water's edge.

Iowa | Clear Lake

Recreation is plentiful at Clear Lake , where Midwesterners flock for fishing, skiing, tubing, and, above all, sailing. As the highest point in Cerro Gordo County its abundant of wind makes it a sailor's paradise. Another vessel of note, The Lady of the Lake, is a charming steamboat that chugs along the lake.

Kansas | Wilson Lake

Pretty Wilson Lake was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1964. Among its top attractions is Rocktown Natural Area (in Lucas Park), a craggy 300 acres renowned for its Dakota sandstone pillars that are chock-full of Cretaceous era fossils. 

Kentucky | Kentucky Lake

Load up the pontoon boat and head to Kentucky Lake , where sunny coves are begging for laid-back days soaking up the sun. While you're there don't miss Land Between the Lakes, a nearly 200,000-acre wooded area nestled between the shores of Kentucky Lake and neighboring Lake Barkley.

Louisiana | Lake Pontchartrain

Lake Pontchartrain's mammoth proportions have inspired country songs. And at an impressive 24-miles wide it's easy to see why. While it's technically an estuary (connecting the Gulf of Mexico and neighboring fresh waters) plenty of folks in Cajun country carry a torch for this impressive waterway.

Maine | Echo Lake

Tucked on the western side of Acadia National Park is Echo Lake, which has the pristine waters and vistas you'd expect of one of the country's most scenic states. But the real magic of Echo Lake is its temperature. Unlike the neighboring sea, it reaches pleasant temperatures prime for swimming. In other words, it's the rare Maine location where you can swim sans chattering teeth. 

Maryland | Deep Creek Lake

Calling all boaters! Deep Creek Lake teems with wide waterways and pleasant marinas. From kayaking to ski boating, this Maryland lake will, well, float your boat.

Mark Twain once wrote of California's largest natural lake: "Mono Lake lies in a lifeless, treeless, hideous desert...This solemn, silent, sailless sea—this lonely tenant of the loneliest spot on earth—is little graced with the picturesque." It's a shame Mr. Twain couldn't see how the lake has transformed since the 1860s. If you’re in the Pacific Northwest, Diablo Lake is a must-visit! You’ll find this stunning milky blue lake nestled among the pines and mountains of North Cascades National Park. 

The lake is actually a reservoir, formed by Diablo Dam. It works to provide hydroelectric power to Seattle and the surrounding area. The lake’s vibrant turquoise color originates from leftover glacial debris from when the valley was formed. 

It’s a bit of a hike to get to the best lake views, but the journey itself is absolutely worth it! 

The gentle trek features unbeatable mountain views, towering 700-foot waterfalls, and a suspension bridge. The hike is fine for kids (as well as dogs, provided they are on leash), though keep an eye out on the steeper sections.

There’s a ferry on offer from the lake in the summer months as well, for those wanting to soak in the views from the water (and skip the hike back!).

Lake George – New York

Lake Ouachita – Arkansas

If you’re after something a little quieter, Lake Ouachita in Arkansas is a unique and spectacular reservoir. It features an uninterrupted coastline and over 200 little islands. 

Created after the building of the Blakely Mountain Dam, the lake spans over 40,000 acres – making it the largest in the state.  

This lake is ideal if you’re looking for a private and magical camping trip. The area is open camping, so you can go anywhere you want – even getting your own little island! 

If you’re wanting to keep some modern comforts, there are many resorts in the area as well. This means if you aren’t a wilderness camper, you’ll still be able to enjoy Ouachita to the fullest extent.

For the avid fisherman, try your hand at catching some of the Largemouth Bass, Small Mouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Bream, Crappie, Catfish, Walleye, and World Class Striped Bass that are abundant in the area. 

More unusual waterlife can be found beneath the surface as well: freshwater jellyfish, sponges, and shrimp! These incredibly rare species can be found at Lake Ouachita due to its incredible water quality and unique ecosystem. 

Lake Powell – Utah and Arizona

Late Spring to Early Fall (May to September)

Looking to get lost in another world? Lake Powell’s mind-blowing geography feels like an alien landscape, unfamiliar yet strikingly beautiful. 

Formed by the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell is the second largest reservoir in the country. It holds a staggering 24,322,000 acre ft. at full capacity. 

It has unfortunately been sitting at lower levels lately , but that just makes your trip more urgent: see this wonder before it’s gone. 

Explore the lake and surrounding waterways by raft, powerboat, or guided tour. Make sure not to miss the Rainbow Bridge National Monument. It’s made of the same martian red rock as the surrounding canyons and plateaus. This monument is the largest naturally occurring stone bridge in the entire world! 

Stay in one of the many luxurious resorts in the area, or rent a houseboat and stay anywhere you like! 

Lake Jocassee – South Carolina

This 9000-acre reservoir was formed after the creation of the Jocassee Dam. It features deep blue waters fed by clear vibrant streams that cascade down from the Appalachian mountains, surrounded by dense forests. 

Rent a kayak or rowboat from the lake’s grassy shore and have a paddle, or take a tour up the Jocassee Gorge to catch a glimpse of local wildlife and stunning waterfalls. Horseback tours through the forest are also available seasonally.

The south end of the lake lies within Devils Fork State Park, but don’t let the name put you off! 

The park is tranquil and a lovely place for a hike, featuring science views of the lake, babbling brooks, and local fishing spots. 

That’s not to say there’s nothing spooky about the lake though… It gets its name from a local Native American legend telling the story of the maiden Jocassee, who, following the beheading of her lover, walks out upon the water to visit his ghost. 

Plus, not all of the existing structures were removed before the lake was created: 300 feet beneath the tranquil surface rest a historic lodge, and a hilltop graveyard with headstones still standing. This eerie scene makes the lake a popular diving spot and was also featured in the 1972 film, Deliverance . 

Hanging Lake – Colorado

Summer Months (June to August)

If you’re a nature lover, you can’t miss Hanging Lake! 

Named for the suspended pools that then rush in delicate waterfalls down to the main lake, this natural wonder has a uniquely deep and vibrant green color. The color is formed from minerals in the rock walls being brought down over the years. 

It’s a bit of a trek to get to the lake; while only a little over a mile in length, the trail climbs around 1200 feet in elevation. 

This makes it quite steep, and the trail can be uneven and rocky at times. Local rangers have advised it might not be suited for small children or the elderly. 

Despite the climb, the journey to the lake is stunning as you travel along a tributary of the Colorado River, crossing over seven bridges and being surrounded by the sound of flowing water and towering trees. 

On your way back from the lake, take a quick detour to find the Spouting Rock Falls – a series of majestic waterfalls that cascade dramatically down from the limestone cliffs.  

Because of the fragility of the lake, there are several restrictions in place to make sure that visitors will get to see its beauty for generations to come.

Primarily, swimming and fishing at the lake are prohibited, as is walking on the log that floats temptingly on its surface. Dogs and drones are also not allowed.  

Flathead Lake – Montana

Flathead Lake is an enormous body of water, spanning over 200 miles of clean freshwater, speckled with islands. The lake is naturally occurring, though a hydroelectric dam erected in the 1930’s did marginally raise its elevation level. 

The water is remarkably clear. On a sunny day, you can sometimes even see the bottom, making the lake appear deceptively shallow. At the lake, you can swim, kayak, or even go water skiing! 

Fish are abundant in Flathead Lake. There are several varieties of trout, Kokanee salmon, Northern Pike, and Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass. It is encouraged by local fishery organizations that non-native species of fish are caught. 

There are many different recreation spots available along the lake’s extensive coastline for you to set up for the day, or to camp for a longer period. 

If you’re wanting to visit the southern half of the lake, you’ll need to purchase a tribal recreation permit. It’s located within Salish and Kootenai Tribes Flathead Reservation. 

Lake Willoughby – Vermont

In the middle of Willoughby state forest, with mountains towering up on either side, this lake is one of Vermont’s brightest gems. The lake shines the most in the fall months when it reflects the stunning east coast color of the trees along its banks. 

However, the lake is worth a visit any time of the year! Picnic or hike in the spring, dare to take a dip in the cool water in the summer, or try your hand at ice fishing or skating in the winter months. 

If you’re daring, venture away from the popular bays in search of adventure! Take the plunge from the top of Devils rock, named for the eerie image of a skull that takes form in the stone’s reflection. 

Or, really feel free when you visit the secluded nude beach situated on the lake’s southern shore!

Lake Mille Lacs – Minnesota

Mille Lacs is the second-largest lake in Minnesota, stretching a staggering 132,516 acres. However, it is fairly shallow, at only 42 feet at its deepest point. 

This limited depth means it’s an ideal fishing lake! Several award-winning fish have been caught here, and it’s home to walleye, muskie, northern pike, bass, and more. 

It’s also an extremely popular ice fishing spot in the winter. It’s a perfect place for an experienced ice-fisher to have a blast or for a newbie to try their hand in a safe environment. 

The lake is ringed with sandy beaches perfect for a family vacation or romantic picnic, or just to kick back and relax. For the more adventurous, book an ATV tour, or hunt for deer, birds, and even bears in the surrounding woods! 

Geneva Lake – Wisconsin

Geneva Lake in Wisconsin is a stunning freshwater lake, encircled by a public shore path and numerous recreation options. 

The path stretches over 20 miles in length. This makes the entire lakeshore accessible, and supposedly follows the route taken by early settlers of the region. 

There are loads to do around the lake, from crazy adventures such as ziplining, booking a hot air balloon, or booking a scooter tour, to quirky local features such as museums and historic mansions to visit. 

One unique activity on the lake is to take a ride on the mail boat! This guided tour takes you around the lake while mail jumpers hop on and off to deliver locals their letters – with the boat still in motion! 

Mono Lake – California

Mono Lake on the West Coast is another of the country’s most precious natural wonders. 

This alkaline lake is home to naturally occurring Tufa towers. They are crazy spires of calcium-carbonate that stick out of the lake creating a beautiful and otherworldly sight. 

Due to the chemical makeup of the lake, it’s saltier than the ocean! Swimming is permitted, and you’ll enjoy unusual buoyancy in the dense salt water. Boating is permitted in the lake, although access to the islands is forbidden between April and August. 

Don’t bother packing your fishing gear though: there’s nothing to catch! The salinity is too high for fish to survive in the lake. However, there is a dense population of brine shrimp that are only found here. 

If the shrimp don’t interest you, the visitors they bring in might. The lake is home to millions of birds, including Osprey, seasonal shore birds, and California locals. 

Lake Eklutna – Alaska

If you’re in the country’s Northernmost state, why not make a stop at Lake Eklutna ? Just twenty-odd miles out of Anchorage, the lake makes a great starting point in your Alaskan exploration. 

The brilliant blue glacial water is surrounded by pine-covered mountains and makes for a stunning kayak or canoe trip. 

If you’d rather stay off the water, there are hikes for all ranges of abilities along the lake shore or up into the forest. There are also bike paths and ATV access during the warmer months. 

In the winter, try your hand at cross-country skiing or skating on the lake before huddling up in front of the fire at one of the public cabins and waiting for the stars to come out. 

Caddo Lake – Texas and Louisiana

Spring (March to May)

Way, way, further South, in East Texas, get lost in the crazy bayou of Caddo Lake ! 

Rent a canoe and paddle among the ancient Cyrus trees dripping with moss, while keeping an eye out for the gorgeous golden prothonotary warblers flitting between the trees. 

The lake is a prime fishing spot too, with over 70 species of fish in the lake and no permit required. 

Just make sure to avoid any protected Paddlefish, but you’ll know them when you see them: these fish look like a relic from the age of dinosaurs, with a shark-shaped body and a super long, paddle-shaped nose. 

Watch out for another cousin of the dinosaurs in Caddo Lake as well: the American Alligator! Alligators are prevalent in the lake and are a cool sight to spot. However, swimming in Caddo lake is not recommended for obvious reasons. 

Lake Winnipesaukee – New Hampshire

Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire and supports a vibrant community at the foot of the White Mountains. It’s a great choice to visit if you’re in a group with diverse interests. 

The local villages feature cozy architecture, tax-free shopping, and maple syrup tasting, making for a charming day out. At the other end of the spectrum, there’s ziplining, a waterslide, and snowmobiling to get your blood pumping. 

End the day by coming back together for a dinner cruise, and water the sunset sparkling off the lake. 

Lake Norman – North Carolina

Lake Norman is a popular regional getaway and the largest man-made lake in the state.

Lake Michigan – Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois

The lake spans 22,404 square miles, with expansive beaches and major settlements such as Chicago at its banks. The lakeshore features many different lighthouses, recreation and nature areas, wineries, and state parks. 

A highlight of these is perhaps Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore , an idyllic park with towering white sand dunes, incredible views of the lake, and many nature trails, activities, and dining options. 

Lake Lanier – Georgia

Finger Lakes – New York

Lake Havasu – Arizona

Formed by a volcanic eruption almost 8,000 years ago, Crater Lake is one of the most impressive views in the country. It’s the deepest lake in the United States, reaching 1,949 feet, and among the ten deepest in the world. 

The circular lake is ringed with craggy peaks, with the cone-shaped Wizard Island dominating the center. 

Make sure to plan your trip around the weather and what you want to do. 

In the winter, many of the hiking trails become inaccessible due to snowfall – but the view of the snowy peaks around the lake is unbeatable, and snowboarding, sledding, and skiing are a blast. 

Springtime at Crater Lake is also really special, as the melting snow leads to a rainbow array of wildflowers adorning the park. 

Lake Santeetlah – North Carolina

Yellowstone Lake – Wyoming

Yellowstone Lake is a lovely feature of any trip to the famous Yellowstone National Park. The largest high-elevation lake in North America, the lake covers 132 square miles and sits at 7,733 feet above sea level. 

The lake’s quiet beauty is in contrast to the dramatic geysers and multicolored bubbling mud pools also found in the region – but don’t let that deceive you!

Beneath the surface, the lake is just as volatile as everything else in the park, with underwater chimneys and geysers pumping water up to 252°F in temperature into the water. 

Despite this, the lake almost always freezes over every winter with ice up to two feet thick, and remains too cold (and volatile) to swim year-round. You’ll just have to admire it from the shore!

Summersville Lake – West Virginia

Summersville Lake is the biggest in the state, formed by a dam of the same name. It features clear turquoise water, striking sandstone cliffs, lush forests, and calm, pleasant beaches. 

It’s a popular spot for fishing, picnicking, and going for a swim on a hot day. It’s also a popular rock climbing spot, with guided tours and whitewater rafting, too – though jumping off the cliffs is not allowed!

Echo Lake – New Hampshire

Another great lake to do some rock climbing is Echo Lake! Echo Crag is a small, traditional climbing area that overlooks the charming lake from the top. You’ll have to bring your own gear for this one though, as it is unstaffed.

Lake Tenkiller – Oklahoma

Lake Tahoe, California

Lake Tahoe is more than a ski destination: It’s also North America’s largest alpine lake. Nestled among the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the border of California and Nevada, visitors generally head to North Lake Tahoe for Sand Harbor Beach, or Tahoe South, where Regan Beach is a family favorite. The lake sees 300 days of sunshine each year, and offers 24-hour casinos for when the sun sets.

Lakes surround Michigan on almost all of its sides, so it should come as no surprise that the state is home to some of the very best lake towns in the country. One of these is Traverse City. This town happens to be near a ton of gorgeous lakes, from the famous Lake Michigan to more quaint options like Boardman Lake, Silver Lake, and Long Lake. Visitors here are truly spoiled for choice.

Traverse City is a great lake town for a younger crowd because there are lots of fun events that take place around the area on a regular basis, especially during the summer season. For example, 2024's National Cherry Festival will take place from June 29 to July 6, and during certain times of year, there's a recurring beer and wine festival on the weekends. The wine culture is also top-notch around this Michigan lake town. Florence, Alabama

Nope, this isn't the Florence located in Italy — this one is right in the American state of Alabama. The U.S. version of Florence is bursting at the seams with southern charm. The town has a prime position near the banks of both the Tennessee River and Wilson Lake. This is also a very family-friendly vacation spot with plenty of activities that can help introduce your kids to the great outdoors of the southern United States.

When it gets warm out, camping is one of the most popular things to do around these parts, and there's a total of 60 waterfront campsites at McFarland Park, all of which have amenities. In addition to its prime location near the river, the facilities also offer activities like a golf driving range, a soccer field, picnic tables, playgrounds, fishing piers, jogging trails, boat slips, and even a few restaurants. All the items you need for a camping retreat will likely be available nearby. The area is also home to many bird species, making it a solid stop for bird watchers.

Port Washington, Wisconsin

Port Washington, Wisconsin is a quaint waterside town just 30 minutes outside of Milwaukee that provides a low-key alternative to some of the more well-known lake destinations on this list. With a population of just over 12,000 citizens, Port Washington definitely falls into the category of a cozy town, but there's still plenty to do around the area — largely thanks to its location right next to Lake Michigan.

Visitors can start their time in the town by appreciating one of America's most famous lakes from the laidback Port Washington South Beach. Even though it's a small area, there are 32 different parks and two nature reserves throughout Port Washington, so there are plenty of chances to appreciate nature here. You can even turn up the excitement a bit by participating in activities like paddle-boarding and kayaking, or you can take it up a notch with a boat trip from Port Washington Marina.

Jacksonville, Oregon

Travelers searching for a romantic lake town  should set their sights on Jacksonville, Oregon. Technically, Jacksonville is more of a creek town near a lake; however, we're still going to count it because it's just a short drive from the beautiful Applegate Lake. It also provides many more things to do in town than anywhere else near this natural gem.

Jacksonville is located in an area called the Rogue Valley, which Wine Enthusiast recognized in 2022 (and 2016, according to Jacksonville's  website ) as one of the world's top wine regions. There are plenty of vineyards to explore, like the Hummingbird Estate and Dos Mariposas Vineyards & Lavender Farm, and plenty of delicious regional wines to try.

For being a relatively small town, Jacksonville is very lively all year round. It's unique among many of this list's other lake towns because it doesn't just shut down as soon as summer ends. Various events take place regularly, and something exciting is always around the corner, like live music performances and annual events like the Country Queer Summerfest, which celebrates pride month.

Tahoe City, California

Lake Tahoe is one of those U.S. spots that sounds vaguely familiar to most Americans because it has developed quite a legendary reputation. Specifically, it's known for having some of the clearest waters in the country. It's become so popular, in fact, that the area welcomes around 2 million unique visitors every year. This Californian lake that's prized for its beauty and size (as well as its state park) is located right next to the adorable town of Tahoe City, named for the iconic body of water.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a ranking of the best lakes in America that doesn't mention Lake Tahoe, partly because so much goes on there. It's a quintessential American lake town. According to Reddit user Ry3_Bread, the two-hour sailboat tour out of the marina in North Lake Tahoe was well worth the money as a way to experience the area. (They did, however, recommend arriving early to get a parking spot because the lots fill up quickly during the lake town's high season.) Alternatively, a former Reddit user recommended renting kayaks on Emerald Bay and hiking to Vikingsholm Castle. Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Idaho probably isn't top of mind when you think about dreamy lake destinations, but the town of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho is idyllic for a water-based getaway. This lake town is an endless source of outdoor fun during the warmer months, which usually span from June to September.  Reddit user Sufficient_Warning80 explained that it's a resort town, so it's a convenient place to visit, and there's a lot to do in the surrounding area if you're super into nature activities. Another commenter on the same post suggested taking in the picturesque atmosphere by renting a bike and going for a ride, while a Reddit user local to the area said that some of the best things to do there are taking a cruise around Lake Coeur d'Alene and having dinner at Moon Time, a local restaurant.

Coeur d'Alene is also a great option for a vacation because it offers plenty of ways to recharge. It's home to a few different spas, including one with views of the lake. Although it does retain that small-town feel, Coeur d'Alene has a surprisingly big shopping scene with over 100 stores, in case you're on the hunt for a little retail therapy. Plus, there's a diverse nightlife scene in this little Idaho lake town with live music venues, casinos, and wineries.

Grand Lake, Colorado

The town of Grand Lake, Colorado hugs the body of water from which it derives its name. While it's very tiny — it only has around 300 permanent residents — this picturesque village packs a punch as one of the country's most scenic lake towns because it's in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. As Quora user William Arndt described, "It's small and charming. Almost European feeling. Lovely setting, on the Lake, close to the mountains and trailheads. The trip from Estes over Trail Ridge Road is fantastic. If you have time, don't miss Grand Lake."

Despite its humble size, quite a lot goes on in Grand Lake. The boardwalk that runs through the town is lined with places to eat and shop. As expected, there's also a wealth of things to do outside.

The town offers easy access to Rocky Mountain National Park, where you'll find a maze of hiking trails and spots for water activities. Mountain biking is also very popular around the area, and many trails of varying difficulties weave through the beautiful surroundings — incidentally, this is one of the best opportunities to spot the local wildlife in its natural habitat. There's also a big boating community in the area, and Grand Lake offers quite a few winter sports, such as snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

Lake Havasu City, Arizona

Most lakes are a dreary greenish color at best, but Arizona's Lake Havasu puts that stereotype to bed. This town's lake is so bright blue that it almost looks dyed. The water in this area is fed by rainwater and snowmelt that has traveled great distances to reach its final destination of Lake Havasu City. Along the way, high concentrates of magnesium and calcium dissolve into the liquid, and the resulting calcium carbonate reflects off the sun as a vivid turquoise.

The lake's majestic color is absolutely breathtaking and makes Lake Havasu City a great destination for nature and landscape photographers. Even though it looks like something out of a science experiment, the water is totally safe to swim in at designated beach points. The quirky little town of Lake Havasu City offers visitors tons of other things to keep themselves entertained, as well. As Quora user David Sandbrook noted, some of the best activities include seeing the town's London Bridge, going hiking up Hovey's Rock and the Cupcake Mountain Trail, participating in water sports, and fishing on the lake.

Big Fork, Montana

Montana is arguably one of the prettiest states in America, and Big Fork is just the right lake town to absorb all of that beauty. The town is built next to Flathead Lake, which already comes with the perfect daily dose of nature that makes the region famous. Big Fork is also less than an hour away from Glacier National Park, so it's the ideal place to hunker down while visiting one of the most unique national parks in the country.

One Reddit user recommended that anyone visiting the area "Head to Big Fork for a cute little town on the bay. Wayfarer's Park has some cliffs that look down over the water. Two bars right on the lake where you can grab a bite and a brew that are right on the water, excellent views."

If you're worried that Big Fork is one of those towns that's rich in views but poor in good food, you have nothing to fear. There are many spots to eat throughout the area, such as Rosa's Pizza, Puente Viejo Cantina, and Pocketstone Cafe. This Montana lake town isn't lacking in bars, either — just check out spots like the Garden Bar and Flathead Lake Brewing Co.

The United States boasts thousands of lakes, so no matter where you live, there’s likely one situated within driving distance, making them more accessible than ocean beaches for most people in the country. Other pluses for a lakefront beach getaway over an oceanfront one? The calm waters of lake beaches are easier to kayak, canoe, and fish on, and they’re especially well-suited to families because kids can splash around without worrying about tides. From the Adirondacks to Lake Tahoe , these eight idyllic U.S. lakefront beaches will inspire you to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.

Lake Tahoe, Nevada

Stretching across the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the nation (after Oregon’s Crater Lake), and its shoreline extends over 70 miles, so visitors have ample beaches to choose from. It’s also easy to reach—a three- to four-hour drive from San Francisco and less than an hour from Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

On the Nevada side of the lake, Round Hill Pines Beach and Marina is a less-crowded alternative to some of Tahoe’s more famous beaches. It’s great for families because there’s convenient parking, a paved bike path, and amenities and activities like lounge chairs and umbrellas, beach volleyball, kayaks, pedal boats, stand-up paddleboards, and parasailing. You can even get food delivered right to your spot on the beach.

Lake Geneva is just two hours from Chicago but might as well be a world away.

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

It may not look exactly like its Swiss namesake, but Lake Geneva in Wisconsin has long been a retreat for Chicagoans and other Midwesterners who flock to its shores to make the most out of summer.

About two hours from Chicago , the small city of Lake Geneva’s historic downtown is right on its eponymous lake, so you can shop for clothes, jewelry, home decor, art, and gifts or stroll the streets with an ice cream cone in hand while watching tour boats and sunbathers at Riviera Beach , the most popular of the four sandy beaches on the lake. Kids build sandcastles here, while teenagers and adults can try stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking. There’s also golfing and more than a dozen wineries and breweries in the area. About two hours from Chicago, South Haven boasts 10 public beaches stretching six miles along Lake Michigan’s shores. South Haven calls itself “the blueberry capital of the world,” and it holds a blueberry festival complete with a pie-eating contest every summer on the second weekend of August. The lakefront here offers plenty of other all-American delights, too, like volleyball pits and concession stands. If you go, be sure to visit South Haven’s historic lighthouse , “the beacon that guides us home,” between North Beach and South Beach . South Beach is your best bet for lakeside beach time, with amenities aplenty, including a splash pad, kayak and paddle board rentals, picnic, and play areas, as well as public restrooms.

Lake George, New York

Dubbed the “Queen of American Lakes,” Lake George is about four hours north of New York City in the Adirondacks, where Gilded Age tycoons like the Rockefellers and the Vanderbilts vacationed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This picturesque lake is home to Lake George Beach , better known as Million Dollar Beach, a sandy stretch of lakefront that opened in 1951 at a cost of—you guessed it—a million dollars.

The state-run beach has plenty of public facilities, including a boat launch, picnic tables, and grills. Down the boardwalk, in Lake George Village, you can go parasailing or take a cruise with the Lake George Steamboat Company , where three ships offer tours from May to October. There are affordable places to stay, as well as upscale options, like the Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing. Here, accommodations include rooms in a former 19th-century carriage house as well as stand-alone houses and lodges; there are eight dining options, one offering Italian cuisine and another a New York–style steakhouse, among more casual options.

Come summer, Lake Travis, in Texas Hill Country (about 40 minutes northwest of Austin ), is the perfect place to cool off in the water and enjoy sunbathing, fishing, swimming, zip-lining, and more. Its lake bed of limestone gives the water a crystal-clear appearance.

At Sandy Creek Park on Lake Travis, you can go camping and spot birds and other wildlife in an area that’s removed from the heavy boat traffic found along other parts of the lake. Bob Wentz Park is popular for water sports like sailing, scuba diving, and windsurfing. The former is good for nature enthusiasts but has a rocky shoreline, while the latter wins points for its sandy beaches and covered picnic area.

Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire

Nestled up against New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Lake Winnipesaukee spans 72 miles and contains 264 islands, making it the state’s largest lake. Visitors come from all over New England and beyond to enjoy the scenic landscape, hike Mount Major, stay in quaint bed-and-breakfasts, and cruise along the lake aboard the M/S Mount Washington , which departs from Weirs Beach , the most popular of the lake’s handful of beaches. With 185 miles of shoreline, Flathead Lake dwarfs every other lake west of the Mississippi in the lower 48 states. About four hours from Seattle lies Lake Chelan, an idyllic spot for hiking, swimming, fishing, and camping. Many families return year after year to Lake Chelan State Park , which opened in 1943 and is located on land associated with the Chelan Indian tribe. With a long, sandy beach surrounded by a heavily wooded area and good amenities—including a full-service concession stand offering beverages, ice cream, and hot food, shaded picnic tables, a volleyball court, hydro bikes, and stand-up paddleboard rentals—the park is extremely popular in the summer. (If you want to camp there, you’d better make a reservation well in advance. )

Straddling the Utah-Arizona border, Lake Powell is home to dramatic red-rock scenery and desert landscapes, which contrast with the deep blue water. It’s a popular vacation spot for camping and houseboating, especially on holiday weekends like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, both on the water and on land. In addition to boating, kayaking, or fishing, you can hike or go off-roading with an ATV.

Technically, Lake Powell isn’t a lake, but a reservoir. It was created when the Colorado River was dammed in the 1960s, flooding the region’s sandstone gorges. Accessibility varies due to changes in the water level, so check the website of the National Park Service before going.

What is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week grew out of a congressional resolution and proclamation signed by President Reagan in 1982 deeming May 6 as a National Recognition Day for Nurses.

The American Nurses Association board of directors expanded this to a National Nurses Week in 1990. The permanent dates for the week were designated in 1993 to be officially observed starting in 1994.

The week includes National School Nurses Day on May 8 and May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, which has been celebrated as International Nurse Day since 1974.

Lake Geneva, known as the "Hamptons of Chicago" and the "Newport of the Midwest," is one of the best small towns in Wisconsin. One of three main communities on Geneva Lake, this posh yet approachable resort town is famous for its Gilded Age estates built by notable Chicago families. It also has a world-renowned observatory, a winding 21-mile shore path around the lake, a famous mail boat cruise, and many independent eateries.

Mere blocks from downtown Lake Geneva, this boutique property has two distinct vibes: the lovingly restored historic mansion and the equestrian-chic Carriage House and Stables. Maxwell’s has six rooms in the main mansion, 14 in the carriage house, and seven suites and one standard room in the stables. A heated outdoor pool and three distinct watering holes — a speakeasy, a craft cocktail bar, and a seasonal outdoor tiki bar — set this unique spot apart from typical chain hotels.

According to Barb Krause, publisher of At The Lake Magazine , a quarterly print publication about the Geneva Lake area, “Maxwell’s owners, Luke and Monica, have a wealth of hospitality experience, and it shows in their creative décor and special events.” Krause suggests ordering a specialty cocktail at the Apothecary Bar and listening to live music. “There are so many cozy corners in the mansion and around the property to sit and have a conversation,” she adds.

The Abbey Resort

In the enclave of Fontana-on-Geneva Lake, The Abbey is billed as the only full-service lakeside accommodation. “The Abbey has undergone a beautiful renovation, and the property shines from its lakefront location," Krause says. "You can easily walk to nearby shops and restaurants in the village of Fontana."

With 334 guest rooms, including suites and villas, accommodations can meet your needs no matter who you travel with. Grand Geneva Resort and Spa concierge Sarah Hill notes that the 35,000-square-foot Avani Spa is particularly excellent. Other amenities include two full-service eateries, a coffee shop and bar, indoor and outdoor pools, a cinema and entertainment center, bikes you can borrow, and marina access.

Lake Lawn Resort

In the greater Lake Geneva area, find Lake Lawn Resort . "Lake Lawn Resort is a great place to spend the weekend, with a beautiful setting on Delavan Lake. There's quite a bit to do: You can golf, get a treatment at the spa, and take a boat ride. Plus, there's a newly designed restaurant, 1878, with lake views," Krause shares. Lake Lawn's 250 acres include two miles of Delavan Lake shoreline and 271 guest rooms with a balcony or patio.

One of Geneva Lake's main attractions is the public walking path. Krause explains that “the Shore Path is an amazing piece of living history. The path encircles the entire lake and is nearly 22 miles around, so most people walk just a portion of it at a time.”

You can see historic turn-of-the-century estates up close and modern new homes. “You walk through the lakefront yards of these homes. We don’t know of any other lake in the United States with this type of public access,” Krause says. 

Black Point Estate and Gardens 

"Set on the highest natural point of Geneva Lake, Black Point Estate is a historic house museum on the lake's southern shore," Hill says. The previous owners donated this summer residence to the state of Wisconsin for public enjoyment, and it's now recognized for its architectural significance on the National Historic Register. You can only access the Queen Anne-style home via Geneva Cruise Line's 3.5-hour private tour.

Yerkes Observatory

Yerkes Observatory , the birthplace of modern astrophysics, is one of the country's most important ground-based observatories. And it almost became condos. Thankfully, a group of dedicated locals and summer residents intervened to save the storied structure from demolition.

Krause expands: “Yerkes Observatory is housed in a grand, historic building with beautiful architecture … we are so grateful that it has been saved from the wrecking ball and development, and now open to the public for tours and events. Einstein was here! I’ve been on the tour a few times, and I love seeing the telescope and hearing about our local contribution to astronomic discoveries.” 

Mail Boat Run

Geneva Lake is one of only a handful of places in the U.S. that still offers mail service by boat. Join the 2.5-hour Mail Boat Run for an iconic area activity. The boat traverses the lake and makes about 50 mail drops.

“I’ve been on the mail boat tour several times. It looks so challenging to jump on and off the piers! But it’s a lot of fun to watch, and the residents get into it, too, waiting on the pier with kids or their dogs," Krause says. "Between stops, the mail jumper tells you about our lakefront history.” It's only offered in the summer from June 15 through Sept. 15, so plan your visit accordingly.

Big Foot Beach State Park

This 271-acre state park boasts five miles of hiking trails, a family campground, a picnic area, a swimming beach, and a playground. For excellent fishing, visit the on-site lagoon, a replica of Geneva Lake.

It's a special spot for Krause. “We originally moved to Lake Geneva because my dad became superintendent at Big Foot Beach. So we grew up enjoying the park as a family, taking walks, grilling out, and learning to cross-country ski in the winter,” she says. "Today, I take walks through the park with friends. Visitors love the open areas for big picnics, just across the street from the beach.” 

Geneva Lake

One of Wisconsin's largest and deepest inland lakes, Geneva Lake is renowned for its cleanliness and gorgeous aquamarine hue — take advantage of it if you visit in the summer. Clearwater Outdoor offers kayak and standup paddleboard rentals. Hill suggests renting a motorboat, too. ​"It's a pretty large lake, about 5,000 acres, so renting a boat allows you to see more than paddling can. People love to rent pontoons, especially families," she says.

The Lake Geneva area is a golfer's delight. The two most notable spots are the Grand Geneva, which has two courses, and the Geneva National, which has three courses (one is reserved for members). If you can’t swing a tee time at these elite courses, plenty of other options exist. 

Oakfire Pizza

Oakfire Pizza is a must-visit for its wood-fired pizzas and inventive pasta. “I love Oakfire Pizza — the rustic décor, lake views, and the open floor plan. The bartenders craft creative cocktails, and we always share cheese curds, salad, and pizza," says Krause.

Helmed by Chef Simon Cumming, Sopra in Lake Geneva embraces Italian-American influences and seasonal products. “This is our top fine dining option right now. The food is fantastic, very eclectic," Hill says.

Simple Food Group Café, Market, and Bakery 

“ Simple Café is perfect for breakfast or brunch. It’s our go-to when we have guests from out of town because there’s something for every foodie and dietary restriction, and the menu changes seasonally,” says Krause. The cafe focuses on artisan products from southeastern Wisconsin producers.

Located on the Williams Bay side of the lake, Pier 290 provides an outdoor bar, sandy beach, fire pits, and a beautiful backdrop for a waterfront meal. "One of my favorite spots is Pier 290, the only restaurant directly on Geneva Lake. And it's actually built next to the working shipyard of Gage Marine, which just celebrated its 150th anniversary on the lake," Hill says.

Krause agrees: "Pier 290 is our special occasion destination, and by that, I mean birthdays, good days at work, or just a random Wednesday. We prefer the outdoor and tented seating, even in the winter. They have live music nearly every weekend, and the gift shop is not to be missed."

Though there's reason to visit Lake Geneva year-round, the traditional summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day) is the most popular as the weather is warm and kids are out of school. But if you don't have to worry about school schedules, the spring and fall shoulder seasons offer mild weather and more affordable prices. The Geneva Lakes Boat Show at the Abbey , a showcase of vintage and classic boats from around the country, is popular in the fall.

Winter is also a special time to visit. According to Hill, “​Our busiest weekend of the year, and one of the most fun, is Winterfest weekend.” Every year, during the first week of February, Lake Geneva hosts the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship. “Teams fly in from all over the country, and they craft these massive, massive forms [in] downtown Lake Geneva … it is just a hoot,” Hill says.

The snowy season also allows for Nordic skiing, downhill skiing , ice fishing, and ice boating, when sailboats on metal runners glide on the frozen lake. “Hanging out at Chuck’s on a Saturday afternoon in the winter to watch ice boats is a rite of passage,” Hill says. 

Lake Geneva is 80 miles from Chicago and 40 miles from Milwaukee. If you're flying in from outside the region, O’Hare International Airport (ORD) or Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) are your best bets, though MKE is preferable — it's closer to Lake Geneva and you'll encounter less traffic than if you drive from Illinois.

The Lake Geneva area doesn't have public transportation, so you need a car. Rent a vehicle at MKE or O’Hare . Milwaukee earns convenience points for an on-site rental car operation, while O’Hare provides free, 24-hour shuttle service to the rental car parking structure.
