Geography - Climate and Weather

Just like any part of Malaysia, Sarawak has an equatorial climate. Its temperature is rather constant in the range of 23°C to 32°C the whole year round. However, it is during the months from March to September, the weather is on the dry and warm side. The humidity level in Sarawak is constantly high on the lowlands where you can expect at least 85% to 95% humidity per year. The rainfall each year is around 3300 mm and 4600 mm depending on the location. The wettest months in Sarawak are during the periods of November to February.

Shopping Guide

Sarawak is a gem when it comes to its natural treasures. It is also a place to shop. There are many large shopping malls in Sarawak to cater to all walks of life. Among the malls in Sarawak are the Tun Jugah Shopping Complex, Green Heights Mall, Riverside Shopping Centre, Crowne Square, Bintang Megamall and The Spring. With this many malls in Sarawak, it makes shopping an inevitable activity when you come visit Sarawak.

Transportation

If you have the budget to rent a car while in Sarawak, that would be the best option. For cheaper alternative, you can always take the bus or the taxi.

Sarawak is full of outdoor activities to do. There are the Cat Museum, Sibu, Gunung Mulu National Park and the Bako National Park. The Cat Museum is located in Kuching, Sarawak. It was founded back in the year of 1993. The museum has over 2000 exhibits, statues and artifacts related to felines from all over the world. The museum has a space of 1036 square meters on a hull which overlooks the city of Kuching.

Sarawak is just full of lush greenery and an abundance of wildlife. The best example of such incredible greenery and diversity of creatures is at the Bako National Park. The park offers visitors a great introduction to the rainforest and the coastline of Borneo. The park is only 37 kilometers from Kuching, making it easily accessible. The park is one of the very few places in the world which is so populated with so much natural beauty.

It was back in 1957 that the Bako National Park was founded. It is Sarawak's oldest national park which is at a staggering area of 2727 hectares. Its location is at the tip of the Muara Tebas peninsula. It is one of the smallest national parks in Sarawak, yet one of the most interesting, as it contains almost every type of vegetation found in Borneo. The well-maintained network of nature trails allows visitors to get the most out of this unique environment. This certainly is the place to go if you are person who loves the nature. It is also a great place to relax and chill.

Dining / Restaurant

Sarawak is famous for its indigenous delights as well as the freshest seafood. Sarawak offers great seafood at an unbelievable price. Good places to go to enjoy the local delights in Sarawak are at the Waterfront Restaurant and The Spring Food Bazaar. For seafood, the places to go to enjoy great seafood are at the Bukit Mata Seafood Centre and the Rock Road Seafood Restaurant. When in Sarawak, do not miss the chance to try the delicious Sarawak Laksa. The dish is actually vermicelli in a thick soup made of spices, lots of seafood, chicken and sliced omelette. This specialty is best taken when it is still hot. Another specialty in Sarawak is the Kolok Mee. This a commonly found dish in Sarawak. The noodles of this dish are made of eggs and are served in light sauce and some shredded beef. The layered cake of Sarawak is also a dessert not to be missed. They come in various flavors.

Fraser's Hill

Fraser’s Hill is one of Malaysia’s most unexpectedly satisfying short-stay destinations. Navigating up the tight twists and turns of the road to this hill station is a stimulating experience – in fact the uphill road is so narrow that the final eight kilometre stretch is limited to one-way traffic at any time. The direction changes every hour; odd hours are for ascending the hill, while even hours have been denoted for descending traffic.

With a majority of its buildings featuring mock Tudor-style architecture, Fraser’s Hill hasn’t changed much from its days as a British colonial hill resort. Besides the essential photo stop opportunity at Fraser’s Clocktower, a hard-to-miss clock tower which stands in the old English village square, you can head on down to Allen’s Water, a former reservoir turned into a boating and fishing attraction.

Akin to a tiny Scottish hamlet, Fraser’s Hill is one of Malaysia’s premier locations for bird-watching. Avid bird watchers can take advantage of the fact that Fraser’s is home to over 250 species of birds – the Fraser’s Hill Development Corporation and the World Wildlife Fund both run classes and excursions to see the flora and wildlife of the hill station. What's more, the Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race – a contest to document the vast variety of birdlife on the mountainside – is typically held here in June.

Spread across seven densely forested hills, Fraser’s Hill – situated 103 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur – is Malaysia’s most undeveloped hill station. Dotted with a mix of granite mock-Tudor bungalows and modern complexes, this tiny Scottish-style hamlet is one of the country’s premier locations for bird-watching. It attracts only a fraction of the visitors of Gentings or Cameron Highlands, yet there are plenty of accommodation options and weekends often see the hill station swarming with visitors.

Sitting on a portion of the Selangor/Pahang border, Fraser’s Hill’s focal point is the tiny village at the end of the golf course and its main attractions is its verdant landscape as well as abundant flora and wildlife. When the sun goes down, it goes without saying that this sleepy station doesn’t feature much nightlife – in point of fact, most people who turn up here prefer to turn in early for the night in order to be up early the next day.

Home to 265 species of birdlife, one of the high points in Fraser’s calendar is the International Bird Race – a competition in which teams of bird spotters vie to record the highest number of species on the hill station. Meanwhile, if truth be told, retail therapy options are pretty thin on the ground up at this hill station – if you’re looking for souvenirs and other knick knacks, head on down to KL.

Fraser’s Hill’s ‘alpine’ location has cooler temperatures than the rest of the country and as a result it is a popular retreat amongst naturalists and bird watchers. Featuring family-friendly jungle treks with rewarding views, the hillside is also a popular spot with hikers; there are eight nature walk trails available ranging from easy to hard. Try the Maxwell Trail – a short and easy hike that lets you enjoy the cool mountain air – or the six-kilometre Pine Tree Trail – a longer trail that takes you past some dramatic views and ends near the Jeriau Waterfall, the perfect spot for an afternoon swim. The 18-foot waterfall is located about five kilometres from the town centre and has a well-managed picnic area with pathways and shelters in the surrounding lush tropical forest. Fraser’s also plays host to the Royal Fraser’s Hill Golf Course – a nine-hole green that is one of Malaysia’s oldest. There’s also a paddock at the eastern edge of the course where you can saddle up for a horse riding session for very little money.

ISLAMIC TOURISM MONTH 2023: CELEBRATING MALAYSIA’S MUSLIM-FRIENDLY TOURISM EXPERIENCES

IPOH, PERAK, 18 AUGUST 2023: Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC), an agency under the purview of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), today launched the Islamic Tourism Month 2023 (ITM 2023), a month-long celebration dedicated to showcasing the nation’s remarkable Muslim-friendly tourism offerings by the travel industry.

ITM 2023 was officially launched by the Menteri Besar of Perak, YAB Dato’ Seri Haji Saarani Mohamad at Casuarina Convention Centre, Ipoh, Perak, accompanied by Deputy Minister of MOTAC, YB Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan and Director-General of ITC, Nizran Noordin.

MOTAC’s aim is to highlight Malaysia’s diverse array of Muslim-friendly products and services, foster collaboration among industry stakeholders, and solidify strategic partnerships among the Islamic Tourism ecosystem players through the Islamic Tourism Month.

Held from 21 August till 17 September 2023, ITM 2023 is a month-long showcase of events, activities, and tourism offerings for the public, tourists, tourism industry players, and entrepreneurs alike that presents itself as a gallery of the rich and unique Islamic tourism experiences Malaysia has to offer.

On top of special promotions on accommodations, travel packages, spa and wellness experiences, food and beverages, shopping and retail offers, as well as events, seminars and exhibitions, ITM 2023 will feature a unique event, a Mosque Open Day co-organised with selected prominent mosques around Malaysia with special tours and activities organised for the public.

This year’s Islamic Tourism Month is enhanced by the use of QR technology to provide the public with easy and instant access to the exclusive offers by ITM partners during the entire month. There is also a TikTok Challenge that the public can participate in to win special prizes sponsored by various industry partners. Among the top prizes are 30 prepaid cards pre-loaded with RM1,000 each by Mastercard.

In recent years, Malaysia has achieved remarkable milestones in the Muslim-friendly travel space, earning recognition as a leading destination for Islamic tourism. Malaysia was named the top country in the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality (MFTH) sector by the State of the Global Islamic Economy (SGIE) Report 2022.

The country also retained the top-ranked destination in the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2023, a position it has defended since the launch of the Index in 2015. In the same year, Malaysia was recognised as the Top Muslim-Friendly Destination of the Year (OIC) and Best Muslim Women-Friendly Destination of the Year in Halal in Travel Awards 2023.

During the launch, YAB Dato’ Seri Haji Saarani Mohamad emphasised that Perak always strove to be the lead example in spearheading the experience economy through Islamic Tourism, which is part of the Perak Sejahtera 2030 blueprint.

The Menteri Besar of Perak said, “Perak has always been a land rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. With the support of the state government and the cooperation of our communities, we have embarked on a journey to transform Perak into a premier Muslim-friendly destination in line with the Perak Sejahtera 2030 blueprint. The Islamic Tourism Month 2023 is just the beginning of an exciting chapter, as we look forward to the grand event of ‘Visit Perak Year 2024’”.

Also speaking at the ceremony, YB Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan noted that Malaysia attracted 10.07 million international tourists last year since the reopening of international borders in April 2022, and that Muslims made up 2.12 million of the numbers, spending a total of RM5.37 billion.

“This is a testament to successful collaborative effort between industry players, that are in line with the key strategies under the National Tourism Policy 2020-2030. Islamic Tourism Month has immense potential to be a signature event for Malaysia to attract Muslim tourists from this region and beyond,” said the Deputy Minister of MOTAC.

ITC’s Director-General, Nizran Noordin highlighted that each of the events and activities were specially curated by ITC and its partners to provide an immersive experience to all Muslim and non-Muslim travellers.

“Islamic Tourism Month 2023 serves as a platform to create immense value for the industry, the public, and tourists alike. For tourism industry players, it’s an opportunity for them to offer products and services in high demand by the Muslim tourist market. At the same time, the domestic tourists and international travellers get to experience Malaysia’s multi-cultural diversity and moderate Islamic lifestyle in a safe and welcoming environment. Overall, it fosters mutual understanding and promotes Islamic lifestyles and heritage, nurturing stronger bonds of friendship and harmony among people from different walks of life,” said Nizran Noordin.

These recognitions are an added motivation for ITC to continue to strengthen its efforts in being a prime mover and leading institution to ensure Malaysia is at the forefront of MFTH.

Ladies and gentlemen, musical superstar Dua Lipa is coming to Malaysia this year!

Today (May 29), 3-time GRAMMY and 7-time BRIT Award-winning global pop powerhouse Dua Lipa announced the Asia leg of her upcoming Radical Optimism Tour, produced by Live Nation. The tour kicks off in Singapore on November 6th and stops in Jakarta, Manila, Tokyo, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur  and Bangkok, before concluding in Seoul on December 4th.

Dua Lipa is set to perform in Kuala Lumpur on November 23 (Saturday) at Axiata Arena.

The tour announcement comes on the heels of Dua releasing her third album, Radical Optimism, which went straight to No. 1 in 11 countries, including the UK where it became the biggest album debut from a UK artist in 2024 and garnered the highest week one sales from a UK female artist since 2021.

In the US, the album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart and No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking Dua’s biggest sales week yet. It was named a Critic’s Pick by The New York Times, who hailed it is “an album of nonstop ear candy,” along with Variety, who declared it is “a joyous blast of pop savvy”.

Additionally, The New Yorker praised, “the instrumentation is a gleaming and impenetrable expanse, and the main attraction is Lipa,” and Vogue raved it is “a summery, self-assured slice of pop brilliance…[and] catchy as hell”.

• Upon arrival at Athens Airport, you will be met by our local driver representative and transferred to your hotel in Athens.
• A welcome envelope will be given to you with all the relevant information about your trip. The rest of the day is free to gain your first impressions of this romantic city.
• Pick up from your hotel and transfer to the Acropolis , where you can discover firsthand the notion of democracy and follow the same steps of Pericles, Socrates, and Plato. You can visit the Parthenon , one of the most recognizable monuments of all time, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike .
• As soon as you end the visit, you will be transferred to the airport to take the flight to Chania , Crete.
• Upon arrival at Chania Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel in Chania. The rest of the day will be free to explore the city at your own pace.

British pop star Dua Lipa returning to KL as part of world tour in November

K UALA LUMPUR, May 29 — Fans of Dua Lipa, rejoice! The popular British pop star will be performing in Malaysia on November 23 at Axiata Arena.

Dua is traveling to the region as part of the Asian leg of Radical Optimism Tour, which will start in Singapore on November 6, continuing with Jakarta, Manila, Tokyo, Taipei and Seoul.

She is currently traveling on the European leg of the tour which will begin in June with sold-out shows in Berlin, London and France.

Pre-sale tickets for Live Nation members go live on June 10 from 11am till 11:59pm. You can register for pre-sale access here.

General sales will be available on June 11 at http://golive-asia.com . Prices of the tickets are yet to be announced.

The tour comes after the Grammy-winning singer released her third studio album Radical Optimism which featured hit songs Houdini, Training Season and End of an Era.

She previously performed in Kuala Lumpur in 2018 during The Self-Titled Tour and was part of 2017 Good Vibes Festival line-up.
