6 Russian Nail Salons That Helped Me Feel at Home in Moscow

By Alex Abel

close ups of two manicures a pastel abstract colorblocked french tip on long almond nails and squiggly pastel lines on...

When I moved to Moscow, Russia with my new husband three and a half years ago, I truly had no idea what to expect. I had never set foot on Russian soil before and was about to embark on a period of deep adjustment — to my new life as a wife, a home away from friends and family, and a world that spoke a completely foreign language.

It was about as hard as you would imagine. The culture shock I experienced was intense as I went about setting up shop in a new land. From navigating the metro system to the grocery store to new relationships with a ton of Google translate along the way, I slowly ( very slowly) began to find my own here.

One of the biggest ways I found fun and solace in the journey actually was through the smallest of places — my fingernails. Moscow knows beauty and is home to some of the greatest nail artists I have ever seen. People with a passion for nail art aren't few and far between here either: I've spotted dazzling tips on every from the pharmacist to lawyers to the lady working at airport passport control.

Experimenting at nail salons by showing the artist photos of saved designs I coveted was a great way to find a love for this new, kind of extremely overwhelming place. Expressing myself creatively and then feeling joy every time I looked down turned into an internal shift that helped me retain a sense of self, and really something light when everything else around me felt so heavy a lot of the time.

For people who haven't made the move to Moscow, these businesses have robust Instagram pages filled with inspiration. Below, six of the nail salons that have helped make my new city feel more like home.

Lovi Beauty Nail

This one was recommended by an in-the-know friend of mine here. While the space itself is nothing flashy (it's one of those places that’s a bit hidden, so IYKYK), they do one of the best manicures I have ever had. Their artists are extremely talented and the manicures last — my gel can easily hold its own without a chip for three weeks or more easily.

"The clients often come in with a design they love," studio owner Karina says. "The designs are really individual and tailored to the person. Our nail artists aren't afraid to really create. The masters are professionals."

This cozy studio has quickly become another favorite. I found them in a pinch when my original go-to wasn't available, and they soon became a top contender. With excellent manicure quality and a warm coffee-shop vibe, the studio and its artists are really inviting.

"I'm really inspired by the aesthetics of female beauty," Vera, the owner, explains. "It's important to emphasize each woman's individuality. In our studio, we really try to make every girl feel at home." Vera shares she wanted to create a place where you could come with your friends, drink a cup of coffee, watch a movie, and get a gorgeous mani. Mission accomplished.

Selfie Beauty Club

Selfie Beauty Club was recommended to me by a born-and-bred Russian friend who always has the coolest nail art. The studio offers a range of designs that's as far and wide as you could imagine. With over 800,000 Instagram followers and several locations, it's no wonder they hold their clientele as their top priority. "We take inspiration from our dear customers," a rep from the studio says. I consider their page a must-follow for inspiration.

Choo Choo Moscow

close up of a manicured thumb with a cartoon blue and pink spotted cat

This studio's interior actually made me feel like I was transported into the heart of Brooklyn for a second with its exposed brick and slightly hipster vibe. The owner, Yanina Chunakova, says steering away from the more traditionally feminine aesthetic that is common amongst salons in Moscow was one of her main goals. "I wanted a place with character," she shares. This is achieved in part by her collection of art from around the world, including two paintings that were donated by clients.

The name of the studio is also an attempt to break away from the norm: “Choo Choo” is a shortened version of her last name, and she deliberately left any mention of "nails" out. "The main inspiration was to stand out in the big city of Moscow," she explains. "We really wanted to be a bit more unique."

The team at Choo Choo maintains their individuality while holding the values of high-quality nail products, design, and safety as top priorities. "Our masters can bring any idea to life," she says.

Jungle Moscow

Jungle Moscow caught my eye during a cab ride home: I looked up just at the right moment to see a salon that looked like an actual rainforest. The window display was enough to draw me in and want more. Their indulgent spa-like vibe will make you feel like you're forest bathing indoors (which is quite welcome in a bustling concrete city). Their talent is just as refreshing. With flawless photos and impeccable designs and finishes, you're going to want to fly over ASAP.

"The studio was founded three years ago after a trip to Bali," the owner says. "I immediately knew I wanted to create something inspired by it when I got back to Russia. Our first studio was based on all-natural materials and an abundance of greenery. The modern style is mature and calm yet with elements of luxury." The nail art they create — typically more subtle designs — matches that essence perfectly.

Nail Sunny is the salon equivalent of the most popular girl at school. They boast over 2 million followers on Instagram, have studios all over Russia, and recently expanded to a Los Angeles location. The vibe is really anything goes: scrolling through their feed, you'll find amazing nail art to suit any personal style.

Hands down the worst experience I have ever had at any beauty salon in my life. Came in with my family the day before a huge wedding for two manicures and a pedicure, hoping for a little R&R and bonding time before the festivities started. We booked appointments days in advance and showed up right on time. Everyone was really looking forward to it! The man kept my mom waiting for an hour and ten minutes, allowing walk in after walk in to sit down and get worked on before her. We all were nothing but kind and understanding as we know they probably work long hours and it was a hot summer day. However, she was utterly and completely ignored by the a$$hole owner despite him knowing that she had booked an appointment well ahead of time. My poor brother was never greeted or acknowledged. (After begging him to go with us and give a pedicure a shot, I doubt he'll ever go with me again) When the man finally graced me with his presence after over an hour of sitting in the corner, I asked him not to cut my nails multiple times and he shooed me away while cutting them all anyways and telling me that he wasn't cutting my nails. (Then please explain to me sir why you have nail clippers chopping away at my natural nail tips???) He then attempted to pry my existing dip manicure off with a piece of plastic by wedging it between my cuticle and the dip powder that was cemented on. When I winced in pain and told him he was hurting me (I was literally sweating) he told me that he didn't have time to remove my existing set the "right way" because he was "too busy" and "it would take him an hour and a half". He then went on to tell me that I was an inconvenience to him and that I somehow should have anticipated that they would have been so busy and called ahead to tell them (that I was an inconvenience?? I don't even know?). Then like some perverted punishment for telling him I was in pain, the sick man went on some kind of a power trip and made me get up and move chairs three different times in 5 minutes for absolutely no reason - he wasn't alternating in another guest (like my poor ignored mom who was a sitting right next to him) or cleaning, answering the phone, etc. He just stood behind his station watching me and ordering me around in front of the full salon. We ended up having to leave with nothing on my nails and my mom's poor hands literally untouched. I am so disappointed because I have only had the best of experiences at Pro Nails in the past. Being back in town again from the east coast I just wanted to treat my sweet family and have a nice little outing together. Unfortunately we left incredibly disappointed - my mom with bare hands and me with several less layers on my unpolished and shredded nails due to this salons barbaric method of dip nail removal. Save your money, save your nails, go to literally anywhere else (unless, of course, you're looking for someone to ignore you, hurt you, and verbally berate you - in that case this place is your wet dream).

In the end nails are worth the price but the customer service is horrible, one of the male employees was rude and an overall dick. BE CAREFUL GETTING A MAN THERE TO DO YOUR NAILS

Unfortunately they use cheap nail polish, so the manicure/pedicure starts to come off within days. Not worth it.

My significant other and I walked in and got these nails! We both love them and they were able to get us in right away! Very thankful! Super clean and neat inside.

‘That happens too often at salons’: Customer says nail salon gave her a toenail infection, tried to pass it off as a ‘bruise’

'not them knowing & still covering it up with polish.'.

Posted on May 8, 2024   Updated on May 8, 2024, 11:54 am CDT

A nail salon customer posted a viral video warning viewers about the toe infection she got while getting her nails done. She said the salon tried to pass it off as a bruise.

Tasia Alexis (@tasiaalexis) has reached over 1.5 million views and 250,000 likes on her TikTok by Wednesday. She captioned her video, “My life is a movie.”

To begin, Alexis says she posted a video about her infection a week prior, but TikTok had removed the video. Alexis is a popular TikToker with over 4.3 million followers. In recent headlines, Alexis blasts Hisense , saying its TV did not meet expectations.

In her latest viral video, she first explains, “Y’all know I have bad luck when it comes to nail salons, right?” Alexis says that when she first moved to Florida, she found a nail salon with a “good amount of stars.” She says she got her feet and nails done at the salon and then returned three weeks later for a touch-up.

Next, Alexis says that as the salon technician began to take off her toenail polish on her second appointment, she noticed the workers and her friend all staring at her toes. “Nobody wants to say a word,” she adds.

“Excuse me, what is that on both of my big toes underneath the nail?” Alexis says she asks the worker. She says the worker told her that it was a “bruise” underneath her toenail, and that she “must’ve worn shoes that were too tight, or something of that nature.”

Alexis says she thought, “OK, cool,” and began to search Google to figure out more about how this happened.

“I already got low iron,” she says. “Honestly, my legs are always bruised up, so it was a possibility that it really was just a bruise underneath my toenail, right?”

Alexis says Google told her, “Basically, I don’t have much time to live. I need to go to the emergency room immediately.”

Alexis says that after finding that information, she worried about what to do next and didn’t want workers to paint her toes anymore. She then says, “I calmed the f*ck down, and I let him paint my toes.”

Then, Alexis says that once she returned home that day, she began searching Google more and came to the conclusion that “something just ain’t right.” She says she has a family member in the medical field who told her, “That does look like fungus of the toe. You are infected,” after she sent them pictures of the “bruises.”

Where did the fungus come from?

Alexis says she questioned how she could’ve gotten infected. “I have not changed nothing in my routine,” she says. “Oh, wait, but I have. You know what?” she adds, “It was a new nail salon.”

The only conclusion Alexis came to was that when she originally went to the new nail salon, she the salon workers “worked on somebody’s fungal toe, and then wanted to do my f*cking toe.”

“That’s how I got the fungal toe,” she says. “I got it three weeks ago, apparently, and then it developed.”

“’Cause I didn’t notice it until I went to the nail salon, and they took off my polish. It just randomly developed,” she continues. “So I had to have gotten it from the nail salon, right? Apparently, that’s where most people get it.”

Alexis says that for treatment, she had been put on an oral medication. “Take pill, one by mouth once a day for 12 weeks,” she says. “You heard it right. Not one week, not a couple days, not a month … three f*cking whole months.”

Before ending her video, she adds, “That’s just to hope that it clears the infection because apparently, a lot of people have a tough time getting rid of it.”

Yale Medicine states, “Anytime your nails are getting wet, cut or filed—or your cuticles are being trimmed—it is an opportunity for bacteria and fungi to get in under the nail.” The technical name for fungal nail infections is “onychomycosis” and the condition is very common, according to the C enters for Disease Control and Prevention .

Women’s Health conducted a study in 2017 that states, “52 percent of the study participants had dermal (i.e. skin rashes or nail issues) or fungal infection symptoms, and they were the most common among people who had been to a salon three times in the past year.”

A viewer in the comment section of Alexis’ video told her, “girl it took me TWO years to get rid of a toe fungus from the nail salon. I don’t get my toes done anymore.”

“My aunt sued the nail salon and won for the same thing,” another said.

One viewer pointed out, “Not them knowing & still covering it up with polish.” Alexis responded, “LITERALLY MY EXACT THOUGHT.”

Vietnamese nail salon owner lives the American Dream

By Melissa Trevino

ALICE, Texas ( KRIS ) — You might have noticed a lot of Asian products and services dominate the beauty industry from skin care and makeup to even nails. Peter’s Nails in Alice is a Vietnamese-owned family business.

Enter a nail salon and you’ll hear a familiar sound that paints a picture of the nail industry.

The sound of drills echoes within the walls of Peter’s Nails.

Tai Ha is the owner of the establishment. He is known as Peter to the Alice community.

“This is my second homeland. Second country. Second language. Everything. We come here and we thankful for what we have,” said Tai “Peter” Ha.

His homeland is Vietnam. Peter came to the United States in 2003 after his father made the way. He said it was a scary and difficult journey even with a visa.

Peter said it was dangerous to leave because of Vietnam’s regional conflicts.

“When the US opened the assembly back in -1991 – before that time, it was hard to live in because if they know they’ll shoot you or you have to go to jail,” Tai “Peter” Ha said.

Fortunately, they ended up making it to the United States ready to start a new life. But that meant Peter had to give up some things like his career.

In Vietnam, Peter made jewelry. He had to learn a new skill, and that led him to where he’s at today.

“My stepmom is doing nails too. She said – let you learn to do nails. It’s faster and after a few months I go to beauty college in Houston. And I got my license,” Tai “Peter” Ha said.

Peter’s new career is commonly pursued by many from Vietnam. It dates back to the Vietnam War— when actress Tippi Hedren worked with a charity that taught Vietnamese women about the nail industry. This was a way for them to ease into US culture and the workforce.

For Peter and his wife, it allowed them to be entrepreneurs. While they consider their talent easy– they’ve learned running a business takes a lot of work.

“You have to be patient. For a few months – we had no customers. We get to work early. We wait until late for customers to come,” said Tai “Peter” Ha.

It’s now been 14 years since Peter first opened his own shop in Alice.

When he started he only had two stations for manicures and one seat for pedicures, but as you can see his business grew.

“We feel so proud. We come here and we thankful for what we have,” said Tai “Peter” Ha.

Peter said he didn’t know about AAPI month but now he said he’s thankful for the recognition of his culture. And yet he hopes more people would participate.

NAHA will be held in conjunction with Premiere Orlando at the Chapin Theater, located at the Orange County Convention Center.

NAHA, coined the "Oscars of Hair" by Modern Salon , has recognized and honored the industry's trailblazers who continuously push the boundaries of skill and creativity.

"NAHA is the biggest beauty event of the year for the United States and Canada, and people around the globe watch to see the greatest talent of our industry on this special night. Michael Shaun Corby, Global Education Ambassador and NAHA Committee Chairman

NAHA 2024 will commence with a red-carpet reception, where attendees can raise a glass with industry peers and catch a glimpse of the nominees. The program includes a VIP reception, red carpet and media interviews with finalists, an awards ceremony, and a winners' lounge where the winners can share their real-time reactions. How Russia is winning in Africa: Wave of military coups gains Putin new allies

At least seven coups in formerly pro-western african countries have opened doors for russian intervention, by mohammad ali salih.

Russia's deputy foreign minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, recently visited Sudan, where he met Gen. Abdul-Fattah Burhan, commander of the Sudanese armed forces and ruler of the country, to conveyed Russia's support. Burhan badly needs it.

This was one recent example of Russia’s newfound strategy of intervention in Africa: Military “druzhba,” or friendship.

By most accounts, there have been at least seven military coups in West and Central Africa since 2020, in Gabon, Niger, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Guinea, Chad and Mali. The Russians have been eager to exploit almost all of them, not merely because the Kremlin regime knows how to deal with dictators, but, also because almost all the civilian governments that were toppled had been friendly with the U.S. and other Western nations. Indeed, some in West Africa offered military bases Western powers like France and the U.S. in exchange for aid in their wars against violent Islamists.

For more than a year, Burhan’s army in Sudan has been fighting a rival militia led by Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as Hemedti, who was formerly Burhan's deputy and ally. Hemedti's forces have established control over almost half the country, including the capital, Khartoum, forcing Burhan and his generals to flee to Port Sudan — which was where Bogdanov flew to meet him.

Russia’s support for Burhan represents a change in policy. For several years, Moscow appeared to support Hemedti, mostly through the Wagner Group, the infamous private militia partially funded by the Russian government. That is, until last year, when President Vladimir Putin broke with Yevgeny Prigozhin, Wagner’s leader, who launched a short-lived rebellion sparked by conflicts over Russia’s war strategy in Ukraine.

In an ironic parallel, both Burhan and Putin abruptly broke with militia leaders that each had supported and supplied.

Soon after Prigozhin attempted rebellion against Putin, he was killed in a mysterious plane explosion that most assume was the work of Russian military intelligence. Burhan likely would have had Hemedti killed, but the latter's forces overpowered him, forcing Burhan and his officers to flee Khartoum.

Putin’s new policy seems to be pursuing direct military intervention in Africa, without using the disgraced Wagner Group as an intermediary. But there's no question that Wagner served Putin well in Africa for the previous five years or so.

In Mali, for instance, Wagner allied with a military regime that toppled an elected civilian government in 2020. Russian soldiers and arms arrived, replacing French forces in a country whose historical, cultural and military ties to France go back to the colonial era. In neighboring Burkina Faso, another former French colony, Wagner arrived after a military coup in 2022 that toppled another civilian government.

We need your help to stay independent

Last year, a third military coup took place in neighboring Niger, toppling another elected civilian government. This time, the stakes were considerably higher because of a decade-long U.S. military presence. Despite a flurry of visits from U.S. officials, including Molly Phee, the assistant secretary of state for African affairs, and Gen. Michael Langley, chief of the U.S. Africa Command, the Nigerien junta forced American troops to leave the country this March. In April, Russian troops arrived.

In Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony, special port facilities were awarded to the Russian navy, and Wagner troops participated in years-long government efforts to crush an Islamist insurgence.

In the nearby island state of Madagascar, a former French colony, Wagner's involvement accompanied efforts by Russian companies to gain access to important minerals such as chromium. Another important mineral, uranium, is known to be abundant in Niger, a likely reason for Russia's intense interest in the country.

Communism is long gone, and the new Russian strategy has a more straightforward ideological goal in its battle with the West: Tearing down elected civilian governments.

Last April, a report by the Philadelphia-based Foreign Policy Research Institute warned that “the withdrawal of the U.S. from Niger would not only be a disaster for its counter-terrorism initiatives in the region but would also hinder its efforts to counter the rise of powers like Russia and China, who are striving to expand their influence in the region, across the continent, and globally.”

Russia's intervention in Africa is largely not financial. Chinese business in Africa since 2005 amounts to more than $2 trillion, and Beijing has $300 billion in current African investments. Russia simply cannot compete, since every day of the war in Ukraine costs the Russian government about $500 million.

Nor is the intervention ideological. The Communist Party of the Soviet Union, with its global ambitions, is long gone. In the mid-20th century, Sudan’s Communist Party was the strongest in Africa, and it still commands some support. But it has long been an enemy of the Sudanese military, and cannot have welcomed Bogdanov's visit.

The new Russian strategy, that military “druzhba,” has a more straightforward ideological goal in its battle with the West: Tearing down elected civilian governments.

A week before Bogdanov arrived in Sudan, the French arranged a conference, largely for Western countries, which agreed to donate about $2 billion to help the Sudanese as they enter the second year of fierce fighting between Burhan's military and Hemedti's militia. The conflict has killed hundreds of civilians, destroyed many cities, forced millions to leave their homes and threatened tens of millions with starvation.

France refused to invite the Sudanese military government, declaring it illegitimate for toppling a partially civilian government in 2021 (while declared the above-mentioned military governments illegitimate as well). A week later, Bogdanov was in Port Sudan to offer Russia’s support to Burhan.

Russia's next step is expected to be a call for “solidarnost" or solidarity, suggesting that its African military allies should work together to challenge the nearby civilian governments that oppose them. Indeed, this has already begun to happen: In February, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger left the Economic Community of West African States, known as Ecowas, in response to criticism from the group's civilian governments.

Love this as a nail spa. I generally have a fresh manicure once per week and a pedicure not as often as I should. Really like the nail technicians in this spa.

Although the technicians are mainly Asian I've never found it difficult to communicate with them. And the great benefit is that an appointment isn't always needed.

Photo of Tia L.

This nail salon has gone down tremendously. It looks worn now; it is more expensive than others in the area; staff appear exhausted and angry. You can get in and out and be anonymous - it is that kind of place. Television was playing you tube videos of people cooking in a neighborhood in Korea, with no volume - very strange. Busy place, not relaxing in any way.

Best nail spa in the area. Hands down (pun intended).... yes it's a bit pricey b the quality and service is unmatched .... Strong hands equal perfect foot massages and pedicures! Why not five stars? They offer massages when people are drying but lace the tip jar with twenties and fifties .... is it a strategy? Sure!! But I find it kind of tacky...all almost all polished an up garage? Yeah.... that gets me a bit ... Does it stop me from going back? Not it all!

Photo of Lindsay S.

This is my favorite nail salon! I've been here about a dozen times and absolutely love it. Villa Nails is so clean and every nail technician I've had appointments with here have all been so great. I usually get the mini spa gel pedicure and a gel manicure, which comes out to about $100 pre-tip. The nails always come out so beautifully and the mini spa pedi leaves my feet so soft! At the end of your nail service, they give you a back massage which is amazing. Remember to bring cash for tip!

This place is beautiful inside. I will give it that. However, the customer service is awful. The nail tech also rushed my nails so bad that there were marks of nail polish on my fingers. The nail polish also chipped the very next day.

Photo of Sarah B.

They will charge you extra for gel even if you bring in your own opi gel polish, but the service is spectacular otherwise. Very clean and tidy. I've called day of and gotten the appointment time I requested and I've never had to wait long for my requested services. All techs I've had have been very skilled and kind. Definitely recommend

I was so looking forward to coming here. The actual salon is super nice. It's extremely clean and well maintained however I was just there on Saturday and got a dip manicure and pedicure. 6 days later my nails are chipping so badly. I'm disappointed and won't be coming back anytime soon.

Photo of Océane A.

After going back to this salon for a second time to get my nails properly fixed, they didn't turn out bad! I am very satisfied. They look way better than before. The shape is more consistent, but needs a little bit of work. The texture is way smoother. If you want acrylics like these, find the nail tech: Sophia. She knows exactly what she is doing. Thank you Sophia. To the salon, hopefully you guys can have straight tips as an option for those who like their acrylics straight, not curved- like me.

very unimpressed. the shop is very nice and decorative- however the work doesn't match the interior of the shop. my nails are lumpy and the shape of the nails are very different from each other. i will not be going back to this place. i went back to get them " fixed " and they just look even more sloppy. very upset. not worth the money i spent.

Photo of Angela S.

Staffing shortages are everywhere lately- except for this place! For my first visit a few months ago I had an appointment but I've since realized they take so many walk ins because they have staff to do it! They have so many employees to tend to all your nail needs! You can however get an appointment for just about any time you need. Their hours are amazing- weekdays till 7pm and weekends until 6:30pm. Their spa is so clean and has a beautiful aesthetic! They are quick and efficient and do a great job every time!

Photo of Paulina L.

Very clean place. Quick service. I've done a regular manicure in the past which came out nice. Most recently I did the dip powder manicure, which I do NOT recommend. My nails started chipping day 4 and two nails completely popped off by day 6. I called the shop when I noticed the chipping so soon and was told that the nails can chip in cold weather (it has been 60-70 degrees). By the next day the two different nails came off completely. Waste of money. I went back day 7 and had to pay for removal within one week of getting them done. Even the nail tech said that is not suppose to happen. There was no customer service or concern that I literally completed this service with them less than a week ago.

The best dog nail clippers, according to dog groomers

Experts recommend playing with your dog’s paws and getting them used to having their feet touched before starting the nail trimming process.

We’re celebrating National Pet Week at NBC Select by sharing our favorite pet products. Shop  puppy supplies ,  kitten essentials , travel carriers  and more on our  pets homepage .

Making sure your dog looks and feels good with proper at-home grooming is a must. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends bathing your dog at least once every three months , in addition to frequent brushing , teeth cleaning and nail trimming. While cutting your dog’s nails may seem intimidating at first, experts say it’s generally safe and easy to do it at home as long as you use the right nail trimmers.

We consulted experts about what to consider when buying a nail trimmer and the safest way to trim your dog’s nails at home. We also compiled expert-recommended nail trimmers and highly rated ones to consider based on our experts’ guidance.

How we picked the best dog nail clippers

When shopping for the best nail clippers for your dog, our experts recommend considering the following factors:

  • Type of trimmer: There are three main types of trimmers: scissor clippers, nail grinders and guillotine clippers. Nail grinders are best for beginners since it can reduce the risk of accidentally nicking your dog’s quick (a vein in the core of the nail). Scissor clippers are the easiest to use (but they do require some manual force to cut through the nail), while guillotine scissors are best for more experienced groomers, according to our experts.
  • Safety stop: Consider a trimmer with a safety stop, which automatically prevents the blade from cutting the nail too short. This can help you avoid accidentally cutting the quick, according to our experts.
  • Your dog’s size and comfort level: Look for trimmers that are meant for your dog’s breed size. “Dogs come in all different sizes, so make sure the trimmers are a good fit for your dog’s nail size — not too big or too small,” says Gabrielle Fadl, director of primary care at Bond Vet .
  • Ergonomic handle: One of the most important things to consider is how you feel when using a trimmer: “Make sure you are comfortable holding and operating it,” says Fadl.  Ensure the handle of the trimmer allows for a secure grip, so it doesn’t slip from your hand or accidentally cut too far.

If you’re in the market for a nail grinder instead of a scissor clipper, this cordless option comes recommended by Alison Chamberland, a professional dog groomer and owner of Best in Coat Grooming Salon . You can choose between four speed settings, and it has an ergonomic design that helps you make more controlled cuts and stay comfortable while using it. It also comes with a clear nail guard attachment, which allows you to trim the nail at a 45-degree angle, according to Dremel.

How to safely trim your dog’s nails.

Cutting your dog’s nails at home isn’t easy, and it might take a lot of practice and trust-building with your dog. “Many dog owners learn to cut their pet’s nails. However, this depends on your comfort level and your dog’s behavior during a nail trim,” says Fadl. “If you’re unsure or if your dog struggles a lot, it’s probably best to seek help or guidance from a veterinary or grooming professional.”

Below, our experts share a few tips for safely trimming your dog’s nails:

  • Avoid punishing your dog: One of the most common mistakes people make when cutting their dogs’ nails is getting frustrated, especially when it’s already a stressful situation for both you and your pup. You should never punish your dog if they don’t want to have their nails cut or don’t cooperate with you, says Dr. Douglas Kratt, a veterinarian and past president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. If it’s too challenging to cut your dog’s nails at home, it’s best to take them to a professional like a groomer or veterinarian.
  • Be mindful of the quick: When trimming your dog’s nails, always be aware of a vein in the core of their nail called the quick, which has blood vessels and nerves. Accidentally nicking the quick can result in a lot of blood and is usually painful for your dog, which makes the process even more stressful. (We go in-depth about how to avoid cutting the quick below.)
  • Avoid caps or guards that can block your view: Guards and dust-collecting caps on grinders and some nail clippers can block your view of the nail, making it hard to determine if you are going to cut the quick, says Bissantz. When using a grinder, wear a mask while grinding instead so you aren’t breathing in the nail dust, she says.
  • Be mindful of your own safety and comfort: In addition to prioritizing your dog’s comfort level, you should also consider your own. Ergonomic, non-slip handles are a great way to ensure you maintain a secure grip on the clippers, especially when you have a dog that squirms, says Fadl.

Frequently asked questions

Most dogs only need their nails trimmed about once a month, although this varies from dog to dog depending on a variety of factors, including nail growth rate, lifestyle and overall health, according to Fadl. For example, dogs that get plenty of exercise or go on a lot of walks (especially on concrete) tend to wear their nails down, so they may need their nails cut less frequently. Dogs’ nails also grow at different rates, so what’s right for one dog may not be right for another.

“On dogs with regularly trimmed nails, we can just grind down the nail,” says Bissantz, so you can skip trimming them with a clipper entirely. If your dog has overgrown nails, she recommends trimming first because grinding them down will be time-consuming and uncomfortable for your dog.

Since some dogs have longer quicks than others and it can be difficult to locate on the nail, cutting it happens often during at-home grooming sessions, experts say.

“The best way to avoid [nicking the quick] is to only trim a little bit at a time and check the nail after trimming just the very tip to see if it’s hollow or if you can see any tissue inside,” says Fadl. “If you’re close to any tissue, stop. If it’s completely hollow, you can probably take a little more.”

Fadl also recommends closely examining your dog’s toenails before you start cutting. If they’re clear, you can usually notice the quick pretty easily, which looks like a pink area at the center of the toenail. Dark toenails on dogs can be more challenging, but you can look at the shape of the nail to get an idea of where it is. “Generally, the quick is in the thicker, straighter part closer to the skin — you should only trim the thinner tip that starts to curl,” says Fadl.

If you do accidentally cut the quick, there are some home remedies to use on the bleeding nail. Specifically, styptic powder can help stop the bleeding and reduce any pain, says Akhmarova.

The type of nail clipper you use can make a big difference depending on how your dog responds to it — some dogs may feel scared or uncomfortable with certain types of clippers, so it’s important to gently introduce it to them and test out different types to see how they feel.

Below, we list the three main types of dog nail clippers to consider, according to our experts:

  • Scissor clippers : As their name suggests, scissor clippers look like your typical pair of handheld scissors. They’re the most common type of trimmer because they’re generally the most comfortable to use and straightforward, says Akhmarova. However, these clippers require you to use your own hand’s force to cut through the nail, which can affect precision, our experts say. Make sure to keep your dog’s paw as steady as possible to avoid cutting the quick of the nail (more on that below).
  • Guillotine clippers : This type of nail trimmer has a hole to put your dog’s nail into and a blade that cuts the nail using force, which helps make a straight cut with minimal effort, according to our experts. Though they’re effective, guillotine clippers are not as easy to use as other types of trimmers. “I, as a groomer with a decade of experience and having trimmed thousands of nails, find them cumbersome to use,” says Akhmarova. It can also be hard to gauge how much nail you’re cutting off, which might result in injury, she says.
  • Nail grinders : This type equips a rotating head to grind the nail down, says Fadl. Since they file off a small amount of nail at a time, nail grinders can be a less stressful option if clipping feels too intimidating. Though a nail grinder can be great for first-time nail trimming, keep in mind that some dogs may be scared of the noise, says Fadl.

To ensure your dog feels comfortable, it’s important to get them used to nail trimming slowly. You can touch and play with your dog’s paws at first, which helps desensitize them to having their paws handled, says Fadl. After doing this for a few days, you can move on to handling the toenails, then graduating to trimming the tip of just one or two nails. “Always offer praise and treats to make it a pleasant experience and, if possible, have someone else distract your dog with attention during the trim,” says Fadl.

You can also reward your pup with special treats or food when they exhibit a desired behavior, like staying still or letting you hold their paws while you’re cutting their nails, says Kratt (this is an animal training technique called “jackpotting"). Give your dog a treat they don’t get every day, like peanut butter (without artificial sweetener) or cheese, because it allows them to focus on the food rather than their nails being cut, says Kratt.
