48-Hour Itinerary

48 Hours in Ottawa, Canada: The Perfect Itinerary

Though Vancouver , Toronto and Montreal are the most celebrated and best known Canadian cities, Ottawa is the national capital . But don't equate this city's relative obscurity with blandness.

Like many of the world's best capital cities, Ottawa showcases national finery in the way of museums (like, lots of museums), architecture and governmental and historical highlights.

Sitting at the convergence of three major rivers in northern Ontario, Ottawa has a beautiful natural geography and expanse of green space and waterways, including the Rideau Canal that winds its way through the city. Building height restrictions and pedestrian-friendly areas have kept the city human in scale and comfortable to navigate.

This Ontario city has a cultured, yet friendly vibe. If nightlife and shopping are your activities of choice, Ottawa may disappoint, but to get a feel for Canada and its people at a relaxing pace, this is the place.

Afternoon & Evening Day One

2 p.m.: Check into your hotel. The  Château Laurier  a Fairmont hotel is one of the most iconic buildings in Ottawa. Its French gothic architecture and lavish interior will make you feel spoiled. Plus, the location is prime central.

Even if you don't stay here, you can drop in for high tea or meander the historic halls, like at any of the historic Canadian Fairmont railway hotels that dot the country. Be sure to peruse the gallery of Yosuf Karsh photographs on the first floor. You will likely recognize many of them — they're some of the most famous portraits in the world.

Public transportation around Ottawa is quite good. Get a day pass (CDN $10.25 as of 2017) if you plan to use it much.

3 p.m.: Head straight over to the National Gallery of Canada . The impressive glass and granite structure houses superb Canadian, indigenous and international works of art and features important seasonal exhibitions.  Catch spectacular views of the Canada parliament buildings from inside the museum. Don't miss getting a photo with the giant bronze spider — Louise Bourgeois's  Maman —  that   greets visitors outside the gallery.

6 p.m.:   Poke your head into the Notre-Dame Basilica to behold its impressive interior before it closes on your way to the  ByWard Market . Ottawa's number one attraction is this pedestrian-friendly neighborhood full of boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. In addition, it offers a year-round open-air farmers' market, but this usually shuts down around 5:30 pm.

8 p.m.: After meandering the Byward Market, settle in for some European food with a German twist at Das Lokal , just away from the market's touristy hustle and bustle. Good idea to have made reservations for this cool restaurant that offers an edited menu, but good portions. Expect live piano on the weekends.

Not ready for bed? Stop by the Highlander Pub  for a nightcap. This Scottish pub has an exceptional selection of single-malt scotch and pleasant outdoor patio, perfect for a summer's eve.

Morning & Afternoon Day Two

8 a.m.: While you're still bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, tackle Canadian Politics at Parliament Hill. While some may find politics a tad boring, the Gothic revival trio of buildings that houses Canada's government cuts an impressive silhouette high above the Ottawa River.

Tickets for a free tour that lasts about 20 minutes are available across the street at 90 Wellington Street beginning at 9 a.m. Get there early as they do run out. The tour includes a trip up the Peace Tower, which affords an excellent view of the city.

11 a.m.: Grab a quick and healthy lunch at nearby Cafe Nostalgica  before heading to the National War Museum . Though Canada is a peace-loving nation, this museum provides an intriguing journey through the personal, national and international dimensions of Canada's military history.  Displayed artifacts and exhibits convey the experiences of women, men, and children who lived through the conflicts that have shaped Canada, Canadians and the world.

Other museum options that may be more tailored to your interests include the  Royal Canadian Mint and Currency Museum , where hand-crafted collector and commemorative coins, gold bullion coins, medals, and medallions are created. The Mint's well-trained, engaging tour guides really make currency interesting. It's free to visit.

Also, the  Supreme Court of Canada  is the country's highest court. Visitors are invited explore the building, which is notable for its architecture and art collection as well as to learn about the operation of the Canadian judicial system from tour guides, all of whom are law students.

2 p.m.: Hit one more museum before the day is out: The Canadian Museum of History , which is actually in Gatineau Quebec, is a mere 25-minute walk away over the Alexandra Bridge. If walking isn't in the cards, you can take an aqua taxi across the Ottawa River in summer, rent a bike or take a 15-minute bus ride. The undulating museum is spacious and architecturally intriguing and houses a unique collection of objects that depicts Canada's history.

Evening Day Two

5 p.m.:  On your way back to Ottawa, stop at  Nepean Point , a lookout just over the bridge that offers a panoramic view of the city and a commemorative statue of Canada's founder, Samuel de Champlain.

(In winter, you could take this time to have a skate on the Rideau Canal, which famously freezes in winter becoming the world's longest skating rink.)

6 p.m.:   So as not to spoil your dinner, split a  BeaverTail pastry  with your companion at the ByWard Market location, as this is Ottawa's patented tasty treat. Calling them what they are - sugary fried dough — hardly does them justice.

7 p.m.:  Just to get away from the touristy part of Ottawa for a spell, set off for Westboro, a hipster urban village where a pub or a yoga studio is never far away. The area features many high-end shops and boutiques and is a ten-minute drive from Parliament Hill.

Stroll the Westboro neighborhood with the locals until dinner time at  Vittoria in the Village  on Richmond Street.

10:30 PM:  Stay up long enough to have a nightcap. Head to  Copper Spirits and Sights , on the 16th floor of the Andaz Hotel — it's the city's tallest rooftop bar.

Morning Day Three

8 a.m.:   To start your last Ottawa morning on the right foot, head over to the Scone Witch on Elgin Street .   It's a   busy place, but the scones are light, flaky and warm. Full breakfasts are available but seating is limited, so the earlier, the better. Grab some scones to go.

For a more indulgent breakfast, dine amongst the politicians and well-heeled tourists at the Chateau Laurier's Wilfrid's breakfast buffet.

10 a.m.: Cycle that meal off with a   gentle, two-hour guided cycle tour along the Rideau Canal with either VeloGo bike share (various locations, self-serve) or with the friendly folk at RentABike  on Rideau Street.  Alternately, make your way to Dow’s Lake for a paddle in a pedal boat, kayak or canoe.

If it's a crummy day or you just need one more museum under your belt, Diefenbunker, Canada's Cold War Museum , is a fascinating look at nuclear fallout bunkers built by the Government of Canada at the height of the Cold War. It's about 40 minutes away from Parliament Hill, but one of the most highly rated museums in Ottawa, especially for kids.

7 Free Travel Planning AI and ChatGPT Apps to Get an Instant Itinerary

Quick links.

  • PLAN by ixigo
  • Trip Planner AI
  • Vacay Chatbot
  • Layla, Wonderplan, and PLAN by ixigo are AI travel planning apps with customizable itineraries.
  • iplan.ai offers detailed itineraries for popular tourist cities based on interests and budget.
  • Curiosio plans road trips on all continents, while Trip Planner AI helps with activity selection and cost estimation.

You can tell a travel agent your preferred dates, the place you want to visit, and your budget, and expect a full itinerary of what to do there based on your preferences. But can AI do the same job?

These free travel planning apps use AI and machine-learning tools like ChatGPT to prepare an itinerary for you in a few seconds, and we took them for a spin.

Layla describes itself as an AI trip planner, meaning you can use it to decide your vacation destination, create itineraries, and find suitable hotels and flights.

If you are uncertain about your destination or would like suggestions, you can ask Layla for advice regarding your trip. Otherwise, enter your destination and ask Layla to create your itinerary. Within a few seconds, you'll get a detailed plan for your trip.

As Layla is a chatbot, you can enter a prompt to ask it to change your itinerary. For instance, ask it to focus more on outdoor activities or include local restaurants. If you're unsatisfied with the activities planned on any particular day, you can give instructions and ask Layla to regenerate that part only.

Once you've perfected your itinerary, you can share it with your friends via a URL or add it to your bucket list.

2. Wonderplan

Wonderplan is a wonderful AI tool for planning your trip. To create your itinerary, Wonderplan first asks you to enter your destination country and city, your budget, the number of days you'll be staying, and your interests.

It then creates a travel plan within a few minutes, displaying various places to visit, their descriptions, and the time usually spent at each location. Although Wonderplan doesn't show the trip map, it does provide a link to Google Maps for each place.

It also displays different types of accommodation available (like Airbnb, hotel, or hostel) and their respective costs. Similarly, there are details about transportation, food, and activities. This way, you can estimate the potential cost of your trip.

In addition to your itinerary, Wonderplan also shows essential information about the country you're visiting. These include the currency conversion rate, electricity plug type, languages spoken, weather, and popular conveyances.

3. PLAN by ixigo

PLAN by ixigo starts by asking you about your dream destination. Then, it provides an option to describe the type of experience you want to have. This is just like a ChatGPT prompt, so you can enter anything you wish.

For example, you can specify the duration of your stay, your interests, the kinds of activities you're looking for, whether you have a family with you, and so on.

But if you can't think of any prompts, PLAN by ixigo provides a few trip ideas, so you can always select those. PLAN by ixigo then shows a day-wise plan, showing what you can do in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

However, if the suggested itinerary doesn't sound appealing, you can again enter a prompt to edit it.

4. iplan.ai

While iplan.ai doesn't mention which AI or machine-learning algorithm it uses, the results are fantastic enough to gloss over that. The app works beautifully on phones to give you a full itinerary for any one city at a time, depending on how many days you have there.

The app first asks you to name the destination city. As far as we checked, iplan.ai works best for popular tourist cities, not offbeat or obscure travel. Next, note how many days you will be there, and then choose your free time each day—a cool step to ensure a better itinerary if you already have some plans, but not a whole days worth.

Tell iplan.ai if you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or with friends, and then choose your interest among topics like history, art and culture, nature, entertainment, shopping, food, sports, relaxing, etc. Finally, choose between an economy, normal, or luxury budget.

After a few minutes, iplan.ai gives you a day-wise itinerary for your trip. It's plotted on a map so you can see all the locations, and each point of interest has a brief description along with estimated travel time.

The app has both free and paid plans. With a paid account, you can share the trip plan with your friends and access it offline. Another limitation of iplan.ai is that you can't get an itinerary for a multi-city trip. For now, you'll need to make a plan for each city you're visiting, one at a time.

Download: iplan.ai for Android | iOS (Free, Paid)

5. Curiosio

The easiest last-minute travel plan is to get into a car and drive. Curiosio specializes in helping you plan an itinerary for a road trip to several major countries on all continents. It doesn't cover every single place, but the existing collection is impressive enough.

Curiosio uses its own AI engine, Ingeenee, which is trained on several crowdsourced travel-based resources, such as Wikivoyage, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Freebase, DBpedia, GeoNames, OSMNames, and OpenStreetMap. Through this dataset, it can chart an itinerary that meets your requirements across various parameters.

You can set options for a round trip or a one-way trip with starting and finishing points. If there are any places you want to visit on the way, add them in. Then set the number of travelers, dates of the journey, what vehicle you're using, total budget, and whether you want to visit places that spark curiosity or are obscure. The AI will usually give you multiple plans and routes for these options.

The itinerary includes a map of your route and a day-wise breakdown of where you'll be going and what you'll be seeing. Each point of interest is clickable to find more information about it. There are easy ways to share your itinerary with co-travelers, print it out, or even export it to Google Maps. Curiosio is one of the best road trip planners for your next adventure .

6. Trip Planner AI

Trip Planner AI plans a perfect trip to your dream destination. Begin creating your itinerary by entering the city you wish to visit and traveling dates. You can add multiple destinations here.

Then, select the kinds of activities you prefer, the number of people, and whether you're traveling with friends or family. Trip Planner AI asks you about your dietary preferences and budget.

As an optional step, you can specify the place where you'll be staying so that it creates an itinerary accordingly. If you haven't decided on your lodging yet, you can explore hotels suggested by Trip Planner AI.

Finally, Trip Planner AI generates a detailed itinerary, a map, and basic information about the city you're visiting. For each destination, it provides the details of the place, expected traveling time, and cost. Though it provides a complete plan for your trip, you can manually add or remove activities from your itinerary. You can also invite your friends to edit the itinerary and download it as a PDF.

7. Vacay Chatbot

Vacay Chatbot is not a dedicated itinerary maker but an AI chatbot that acts like your travel advisor. So, you can ask it to give travel recommendations, compare different destinations, and, of course, create an itinerary. If you've previously used AI chatbots like ChatGPT, you'll find this trip planner easy to use.

Just enter a prompt specifying your destination and trip details and ask Vacay Chatbot to create an itinerary. You can include details like your trip duration, budget, preferences, number of travelers, etc. The more details you provide, the better your itinerary will be.

One of the downsides of using Vacay Chatbot is that it doesn't provide a map for your trip. However, you can use these apps to plot your itinerary on a map .

All these travel planning AI apps urge you not to use the itinerary as-is and only treat it as a template or guide to begin planning your trip. This is because they currently have several limitations, like databases that aren't recently updated or require specific prompts from the user.

A real human travel agent will still give you a more customized itinerary, but it will cost you a few bucks. If you want a free base guide, more basic travel planning apps are a good starting point.

Canadians plan summer travel despite economic pressures

Despite economic challenges, Canadians are eagerly planning summer trips, with an average spending of $2,405 on transportation and lodging, according to a new survey.

Deloitte Canada's first Summer Travel Outlook reveals the majority of Canadians are planning to travel this summer and significant number (74 per cent) of travelers intend to stay within Canada, highlighting a strong preference for domestic tourism.

"The travel sector can expect growth, even with price-sensitive consumers. Canadians are keen to explore local destinations, from lakeside retreats to urban adventures," says Leslie Peterson of Deloitte Canada.

Jessie Mancini, a self-employed hairstylist, embodies this trend. She is choosing to camp with her family instead of taking a more expensive vacation.

"You have to adapt. You definitely want to still have a little bit of fun living life, but instead of going to Florida, we've decided to do camping excursions," she says. "We go to Mal's Camping in Lanark, it's 45 minutes from our home and a great way to decompress on weekends. It's great to see the kids laughing and playing. They have activities, movie nights, corn roasts, fire pits, people play their music; it's honestly a great time."

Camping remains a popular choice, with most Canadians favoring short jaunts and day trips. For those unsure how to plan their adventure, Jennifer Sloan offers a unique opportunity to discover the Ottawa region and beyond , with Unexpected Journeys.

Sloan says more than 3,000 groups have ordered the Unexpected Journey package, which costs $60 each and guides travelers through a variety of different locations, like cozy cafes, bustling towns, and Indigenous landmarks.

"So far I've created 11 surprise self-guided journeys and they lead you to five surprise outdoor stops and lots and lots of optional things to see and do along the way," says Sloan. "The journeys can be tailored. Maybe you want to head to a vineyard, maybe you want to go shopping; and every package comes with a list of recommended accommodations in the area, so if you want to extend your journey and make it an overnight trip, you can do that too. People want something that doesn't cost a lot of money or take them too far."

Canadians are also eager to support locally-owned establishments, like Kelly's Landing in Manotick, along the Rideau River, which caters to boaters as well. "You can't beat the view, we're really one of the only restaurants right on the river," says manager Vicky. "We get a lot of houseboats coming down from places like Smiths Falls or even Peterborough, and come July we get a lot of Quebec boat traffic."

Canadian Summer Music Festivals to Plan a Trip Around

If nothing says “summer” to you like enjoying live music with thousands of fellow fans, here are some of the biggest Canadian summer music festivals to put on your trip-planning radar. (And if rock isn’t your scene, don’t worry. The list includes some big-name EDM, jazz, country and folk festivals, too.) They’re a great chance to hear Canadian music , as well as concerts by headliners from around the world.

Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (Montreal, Quebec)

One of the world’s largest jazz festivals, the Festival international de jazz de Montréal practically shuts down downtown Montreal every year and, for many Montrealers, signals the true start of summer. Since the festival was launched in 1980, just about every leading jazz artist in the world has played here at least once, from Nina Simone and Miles Davis to Herbie Hancock and Norah Jones. The programmers usually include a few big-name non-jazz acts, too. JUNE-JULY

Festival d’Été de Québec (Quebec City, Quebec)

This festival’s name translates to simply “Quebec summer festival,” which gives you an idea of the broad range of acts that usually hit the stages at the Festival d’été de Québec . Among the largest Canadian summer music festivals, this event is so huge that it is actually spread across half-a-dozen sites in downtown Quebec City, with the Plains of Abraham hosting the biggest shows. Some concerts are free, and there’s even a special track of programming for kids. JULY

Ottawa Bluesfest (Ottawa, Ontario)

Don’t let the name fool you. Sure, Ottawa Bluesfest did start as a blues festival, and the organizers usually do program a few blues acts each year. But it has long since morphed into one of Canada’s largest rock music festivals—with a smattering of country, folk, R&B and rap artists thrown in. Seriously, there’s bound to be at least one show during the 11-day juggernaut festival to appeal to just about every music fan, whether your taste runs to classic arena rock or the latest EDM. It all takes place on LeBreton Flats, just west of the downtown core. JULY

Winnipeg Folk Festival (Oakbank, Manitoba)

The Winnipeg Folk Festival takes place in Birds Hill Provincial Park, about a half-hour drive northeast of downtown Winnipeg. It’s been a major draw for the acoustic crowd since it launched in the heady folky year of 1974, and regularly tops lists of the most popular Canadian summer music festivals. Acts range from straight-up folk to Celtic, bluegrass, world music and Americana. Vendors selling handmade goods and organic food are usually on hand, too. JULY

Shambhala Music Festival (Salmo River Ranch, British Columbia)

A big stop on the Canadian summer musical festivals circuit for EDM artists, the Shambhala Music Festival is held on a 500-acre farm bounded by mountains and the Salmo River. Getting to this spot in the West Kootenays region of British Columbia takes some planning, as the nearest city of any size (and it isn’t huge) is Nelson, B.C., about 50 kilometres to the north. If you’re driving up from the U.S., it’s about 2.5 hours north of Spokane, Washington.  JULY

Osheaga (Montreal, Quebec)

Perhaps Canada’s closest cousin to Coachella, the Osheaga music festival is short but mighty. It takes over an island at Montreal’s Parc Jean-Drapeau for the long weekend at the beginning of August, programming both emerging and big-name acts on six stages. Die-hard music fans love it because it offers the chance to discover lots of new acts—plus, it’s a giant open-air party.  AUGUST

Veld Music Festival (Toronto, Ontario)

Often overlapping Osheaga, the Veld Music Festival is one of Canada’s largest electronic music festivals. It draws crowds to Downsview Park in the north end of Toronto to hear ats like Martin Garrix, Slander and Marshmello. AUGUST

Chasing Summer (Calgary, Alberta)

It seems early August is  the time for EDM when it comes to Canadian summer music festivals, as Chasing Summer usually comes to the Max Bell Festival Centre Grounds in Calgary the same weekend as Veld is lighting up Toronto. AUGUST

Boots and Hearts Music Festival (Burl’s Creek, Ontario)

Any Canadian country star worth his or her Stetson has played the Boots and Hearts Music Festival in Burl’s Creek, about a 90-minute drive north of Toronto. The big event—one of the largest Canadian summer music festivals with a country slant—also attracts lots of American acts, too. The closest city of any size is Barrie, Ontario, so many concert-goers camp or bring RVs. AUGUST

Air Canada adding flights from Ottawa. Here’s the breakdown

air canada plane

By Natasha O'Neill

Posted May 17, 2024 10:45:28 AM.

Last Updated May 17, 2024 10:45:33 AM.

Those flying to and from the nation’s capital will have a few more options as Air Canada announces it’s adding flights to the city.

On Friday, the airline said it will be adding 60 per cent more flights to and from Ottawa compared to 2023.

Travellers will have more options to Calgary and Winnipeg with those paths now operating year-round. More flights were added to Halifax and Quebec City and a larger plane was added to Vancouver.

Ottawa residents can also enjoy more flights to Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Orlando, Cancun and Punta Cana starting this winter.

“This is great news for Ottawa’s economy and recognizes the importance and vibrancy of the Ottawa market on the world stage,” Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said in a press release.”It’s particularly welcome news for the tourism industry, for business owners, and for Ottawa residents travelling to destinations throughout North America.”

Through a joint venture with United Airlines, Air Canada is also increasing trips to Chicago, Washington and New York.

Starting in the winter, there will be three trips daily to Chicago, New York-Newark, Washington-Dulles and one trip daily to Washington-Reagan.

“Timely and strategic, these flights cater to the needs of Ottawa-Gatineau residents as they jet off to their favourite destinations or welcome visitors from afar,” Joel Tkach, Vice President, Business Development & Marketing, of the Ottawa International Airport Authority, said.
