This week's grand tour ep will be all about the bugatti chiron.

Matt Robinson

The Bugatti Veyron vs plane race on Top Gear’s seventh series is up there with the show’s best ever features. And now that particular film has just turned 12 years old (it originally aired on 11 December 2005), we’re effectively getting the sequel.

Yes, in the latest episode of The Grand Tour’s second series, Jeremy Clarkson will at last be meeting the Bugatti Chiron. And yes, he does say it’s “the fastest car in the world.” With a disappointing lack of pause, we must say.

Elsewhere, James May drives the new Kia Stinger GT, and there’s a Vauxhall Insignia crashing into some bins, for some reason.

You’ll be able to stream the episode from Friday 22 December, or a little before depending on your location.

What will he race it against?

Someone said fastest car in the world?

Yes I did… [ F I G H T M E ]

Oh ffs that picture

comment of the week!!!

TONIGHT: JAMES MAY DIES: RICHARD HAMMOND DRIVES A SKODA CITIGO AND I CRASH A BUGATTI CHIRON

But will James May go for the top speed in it??

COULD WE SEE A REPEAT OF THIS?

as well a new Driver Female who does not talk, that brilliant in my view.

Pssst, 21st of December is a Thursday, not a Friday

this is the fastest car pause in the world

It’s not though, not in acceleration, top speed or any metric.

Not a ‘hypercar’

Oh yeah just a 1500hp supercar that can easily break 260mph, pretty sure that’s in the hypercar range.

When he said that, they very well could have been doing takes before koenigsegg made their record. If that’s the case, then at the time he said it, it was the fastest car in the world.

The Bugatti Chiron Will Steal The Show In The Grand Tour Episode Three

This promises to be the best episode of The Grand Tour season two yet.

Season two of The Grand Tour is off to a solid start. The first episode treated us to a comparison between the Lamborghini Avendator S, Honda NSX, and Rimac Concept One, but most will remember it for featuring Hammond's hill climb crash . Featuring an old-school race between Clarkson in the new Ford GT and May and a handicapped Hammond on a passenger airplane, episode two felt more cohesive since the main film wasn't disrupted by Hammond's aforementioned accident.

It was a more successful attempt at recapturing the spirit of old Top Gear than some of the episodes in season one and also introduced us to Abbie Eaton, The Grand Tour's new female racing driver .This week's episode promises to be the best yet in season two. Why? Because it features the mind-bending 1479-hp Bugatti Chiron, in what should be a series highlight.

Yes, we've already seen Chris Harris drive the Chiron in the last series of Top Gear earlier this year, but it will be interesting to see if Clarkson rates it as highly as its predecessor, the Veyron, which he couldn't stop gushing about in Top Gear back in 2005. A teaser video uploaded earlier this year by Michelin, the car's tire supplier, even hinted that The Grand Tour could push the Chiron beyond its 261 mph road limit for the first time and hit over 280 mph. According to the episode preview, Clarkson will use the Chiron to embark on an epic road trip across Europe in an attempt to remake the cult classic 1976 film Rendezvous. That's not all we have to look forward to in episode three, either.

James May will race the new Kia Stinger GT against some skateboards in the Mediterranean island of Majorca, which again sounds like a classic Top Gear-style face-off. Hammond and May also invent a new car park racing sport to cure lunchtime boredom at the office. Celebrity Face Off will pit actor Hugh Bonneville against naturalist Casey Anderson to find the "world's fastest person who lives with a bear". So far, these segments have dragged a bit. Like the celebrity interviews in Top Gear, it all depends if there's any chemistry between the guests, but Clarkson's banter usually makes up for it.

‘The Grand Tour’ first to test Bugatti Chiron

Viknesh Vijayenthiran

It appears “The Grand Tour” managed to get its hands on a Bugatti Chiron . The Veyron successor will be appearing on an upcoming episode of Amazon’s new series starring former “Top Gear” hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, and Michelin, which supplies the tires for the 1,480-horsepower hypercar, has treated us with a little preview.

The video highlights the extreme stresses placed on the tires of the Chiron at speeds approaching 250 mph and beyond. It also reveals some interesting tidbits like, for example, the fact the car at full tilt can churn through its entire 22-gallon gas tank in 9.0 minutes.

The short clip also teases us with the question of just how fast “The Grand Tour” folks managed to take the Chiron. Spoiler alert: The speed is unlikely to be more than 261 mph . Recall that Bugatti is limiting the Chiron to this speed until the company has its first crack at the Veyron Super Sport's 267.8 mph land speed record, with the attempt currently scheduled for sometime in 2018.

Despite this, “The Grand Tour” episode featuring the Chiron should be thoroughly exciting. Unfortunately, it isn’t clear when the episode will actually be aired.

Deliveries of the Chiron have already commenced. Like the Veyron before it, the car comes with a quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W-16 paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive system. Just 500 will be built, including all the planned special edition models, and the starting price is a cool 2.4 million euros (approximately $2.6 million).

The Grand Tour First To Test Bugatti Chiron

One of the first episodes of old Top Gear that I ever watched was Series 9, Episode 2 when James May took the Bugatti Veyron out on the Ehra-Lessien test track and maxed out the speed at 259.7 MPH. It was actually the first time I had seen the Veyron in action (other than in video games) and it was an amazing sight, almost like a movie special effect. I envy anyone who has gotten the chance to go that fast in a car.

After James had another go in the Veyron Super Sport (Series 15, Episode 5) and actually held a world record for a few minutes, I immediately wondered how Bugatti would ever follow this up. I mean, top speeds of road cars are finite, right? You can’t have a car that goes 238974659287634598234 MPH on public roads, so what would be next for Bugatti?

[button color=”red” size=”big” alignment=”center” rel=”follow” openin=”newwindow” url=”https://grandtournation.com/3305/the-grand-tour-season-finale-heres-what-to-expect-in-episode-13-mh1211/”]Episode 13 Preview[/button] Enter the Chiron, Bugatti’s new tire slayer, which The Grand Tour has managed to get their hands on:

Any follow up to a tremendous car like the Veyron is certain to make headlines, and it’s no surprise that the Chiron’s performance is something gear/petrol heads have been waiting for. There’s no word on which episode of The Grand Tour this test will air on, but we know it’s coming.

Unfortunately, the absolute top speed of the Chiron will not be seen on The Grand Tour (at least not at first). Bugatti is limiting the speed to 261 MPH until the company itself gets the first crack at the Veyron Super Sport’s 267.8 MPH record, with an attempt currently scheduled for sometime in 2018. TGT or not, I am absolutely looking forward to seeing how fast this beast can go!

Anyone want to take some guesses at the top speed?

Bugatti presents Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse at the Volkswagen Group Evening in Moscow

Bugatti presents Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse at the Volkswagen Group Evening in Moscow

  • Share press release

Following the success of the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, the European luxury car manufacturer did not have to wait long before it received the first inquiries about an open-top version of the Grand Sport that could also deliver 882 kW (1,200 hp). To kick off Moscow Auto Salon 2012, Bugatti presents the Bugatti 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse for the first time publicly to the important Russian market, at the Volkswagen Group evening right the night before.

Dynamics in figures..

The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse boasts a remarkable maximum torque of 1,500 Nm (at 3,000–5,000 rpm) from the 7.9-liter capacity of its W16 engine. The maximum output (1,200 hp) is reached at 6,400 rpm. These figures allow the car to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from standing in unbelievable 2.6 seconds. The top speed of 410 km/h (255 mph) makes the four-wheel drive Vitesse (like all Veyrons) the fastest production roadster ever. The maximum speed is reached on closed tracks with special safety precautions. In “normal” handling mode, the Vitesse is electronically limited to 375 km/h (233 mph).

Optimized drive system.

The 199 hp increase over the Grand Sport has been mainly achieved by using four larger turbochargers with new intercoolers. Furthermore, Bugatti has extensively reinforced all drivetrain components in order to safely transfer the immense forces at all times. The gearing of the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) in particular has been adapted to the new requirements. In this context, as on the Super Sport, Bugatti has also modified the air ducting in the area of the drivetrain. As a consequence of the larger turbochargers and the overall reduced back pressure, it was even possible to reduce the fuel consumption slightly despite the increased output. The fuel system, with a four-pump tank, has been taken from the Super Sport.

In order to put the unrivalled power onto the road absolutely safely and masterfully, the engineers have reconfigured the chassis of the Vitesse. Thanks to the quick-responding dampers that have been adapted from motor racing, the control of the vehicle has been further improved and perfectly balanced. Body roll and pitching during hard acceleration and braking are now virtually imperceptible. Optimized wheel-load fluctuations have further reduced understeer and allow a maximum level of active safety. In addition to the incomparable lateral acceleration of up to 1.4 g, the precise interaction of the tires (on all-new, lighter 20-inch “Vitesse”-type alloy wheels), together with the intelligent all-wheel-drive system, ensures extremely good handling. The chassis, all-wheeldrive system and the revised ESP form a dynamic alliance: since the reconfigured ESP kicks in slightly later, for example when you accelerate out of corners, the Vitesse also provides a more dynamic performance in these situations. It goes without saying that Bugatti has adapted the brakecooling system to account for the even higher engine output. The brakes, which are unparalleled in terms of stability and performance, now have additional and larger air intakes.

In general, it can be said that the Vitesse is even sportier than the 1,001 hp Grand Sport, but at the same time it has not been turned into a full-blown racing car. It therefore remains easy to master for the driver. In this context, it is simply astounding that Bugatti managed to increase comfort in the chassis area by reducing the dynamic natural frequency.

Bugatti has developed a new roof spoiler for the Vitesse that significantly reduces wind noise and buffeting in the interior. Furthermore, there will be a new windbreak for the roadster that can be stored away compactly in the luggage compartment when not in use. Both details will also be available for the Grand Sport. Together, they allow extremely relaxed, open-top driving even at speeds of around 200 km/h (124 mph).

Numerous aerodynamic measures at the front and rear that appeared on the Super Sport have been adapted for the Vitesse. The front end is therefore characterized by larger air intakes; the two central air intakes to the left and right of the Bugatti radiator grille are divided horizontally by a bar. The bottom air vent stretches sideways into the wheel housing and gives this exceptional sports car an extremely masterful appearance. Immediately below this air intake, you will see a new, visually refined front spoiler that has been designed in a similar way to the splitters used in motor racing. The improved xenon headlights from the Super Sport, which are now framed in black, are also new. The rear end, which is also derived from the Super Sport, is characterized by a double diffusor and a centrally positioned twin tailpipe. A new Park Distance Control system (PDC) watches over the front and the rear.

The two air scoops on the left and right of the engine cover (redesigned for the Vitesse) are a characteristic of the Grand Sport and thus also of the Vitesse. These air scoops fulfill two tasks on the roadster. On the one hand, they pull in air for the engine, and on the other, they are an elegantly integrated part of the anti-roll protection system. As on the Super Sport, a full-carbon-fiber monocoque, which allows an extremely high torsional rigidity combined with maximum passive safety, is also used on the Vitesse. The outer skin is also made completely from carbon fiber and, consequently, the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is available in clear-coated exposed carbon fiber.

Carbon fiber is (along with stainless metals such as aluminium and magnesium) also the dominant material in the interior of the Vitesse. Numerous interior parts are now made from carbon fiber in the 1,200 hp roadster. This includes the center console extension, a cover with EB logo in the rear-bulkhead leather trim (between the seat backrests) and the belt outlet covers on the seats. The décor on the center console, the door inserts and the adjoining trim on the instrument panel are also made from carbon fiber. Contrasting stitching is also featured on the leather armrest between the seats, which comes without the typical quilting. Also new: knee pads in the center tunnel area, an additional 12 V socket (in the glove compartment), the restraint systems, the illuminated start and parking lock button (same as Super Sport), an instrument cluster with shift-up information and – as a matter of honor – the power gauge that now goes up to 1,200 hp.

“We were instantly electrified by the idea of transferring the power of the Super Sport to the Grand Sport, which previously delivered a maximum of 1,001 hp, and thus taking the roadster to a new level,” says Wolfgang Dürheimer. The President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. continues: “Our team has managed to transfer the world’s most powerful car engine to the open-top sports car while taking all vehicle dynamics and aerodynamic parameters into consideration.”

Configuration of the show vehicle.

At Vetoschniy Art Center in Moscow, Bugatti proves one more time that there are no limits to individualization options for the Bugatti. Each one of the 300 Veyrons and 40 Grand Sport built so far are therefore unique. This also applies to the model on display. The Grand Sport Vitesse is painted in all black with red rims in a diamond pattern. Its carmine red interior and seats showcase an aggressive, dynamic look that fits well with the positioning of the new Grand Sport Vitesse. It costs 1.79 million euros.

VIDEO: Unveiling the Clay-Made Bugatti Chiron

T his amazing story comes from Vietnam, where YouTuber Vu Duc Sang has achieved the seemingly impossible. Over the course of a year, Sang built a drivable Bugatti Chiron using mostly everyday materials! That's right, the only original Bugatti part is the engine – everything else is Sang's handiwork.

The YouTube video (which you'll definitely want to check out) shows Sang crafting the supercar's frame from bent metal rods. Then, he covers it with plastic wrap before applying clay to sculpt the Chiron's iconic curves and details. To harden the clay mold, Sang uses plaster and finishes it all off with a sleek blue and black paint job – just like a real Bugatti.

The interior gets some love too. Sang even used clay to shape a steering wheel that looks just like the one in a real Chiron. While he didn't build the sporty seats from scratch, he found a way to incorporate them into his incredible build.

Sang's YouTube video showcasing this project has racked up a whopping 39 million views and nearly 20,000 comments from fans all over the world. Viewers are blown away by Sang's dedication and skill. This isn't his first rodeo either – Sang's channel features other scratch-built supercars, which has helped him score over 2 million subscribers!

So, if you're looking for some serious car inspiration (and maybe a healthy dose of "I can do anything" motivation), be sure to check out Sang's YouTube channel and see how he built his dream Bugatti (almost) entirely from scratch!
