Davos in Grisons is a place of superlatives: this holiday destination with international ambience is the largest resort in the Alps for mountain holidays, sport and conferences, at 1560 m the highest town in the Alps and a high-altitude health resort with a long tradition.

Description

This long-drawn-out town in the Landwasser valley is renowned above all as a conference centre, and also as a major winter and summer sports centre with an international flavour and a huge range of activities. Its showpiece is its modern Conference Centre , which hosts the World Economic Forum WEF (nearly) every year. In the centre of Davos, visitors will find a wide range of accommodation and excellent shopping, with numerous boutiques, cafés and restaurants . At night, too, there’s plenty of entertainment, with bars, discos and a casino. Davos is also the headquarters of the well-known Weissfluhjoch/Davos Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research .

Davos is a winter sports metropolis for skiing and snowboarding fans from all over the world. At altitudes between 1124 and 2844 m, guests will find 58 ski lifts, 300 km of slopes, 100 km of cross-country ski tracks, over 150km snowshoe and winter hiking trails, two artificial ice rinks with ice hockey, ice skating and curling fields are available. And no fewer than eight sledging runs to have fun on! The six Davos-Klosters skiing areas of Parsenn/Gotschna, Jakobshorn, Pischa, Madrisa, Rinerhorn and Schatzalp/Strela have been brought together into one vast winter sports arena. For skiing fanatics, the mecca is Parsenn  area which connects up Davos with the neighbouring resort of Klosters. The Jakobshorn, on the other hand, is the in place for freestylers  and party guests with half-pipes  and cosy après-ski huts .

For a quieter time, take a ride by horse-drawn sledge into the snowy side valleys, or experience the Davos mountains with 150 km of beautifully prepared winter footpaths and snow-shoe trails. Davos Klosters  – the world's best winter guest programme During some 100 winter days, the guests can benefit from local guides providing highly discounted and exclusive winter adventures on a daily basis. This is the offer: Davos Klosters winter guest programme

The cable-cars on the Jakobshorn (2590 m), Parsenn including the Weissfluhjoch und (2844 m), Rinerhorn (2490 m) and Schatzalp /Strela provide access to three hiking areas with a total of 700 km of marked footpaths. The same network of trails is also available to mountain bikers – the “share the trails” philosophy is put into active practice here. Davos Klosters is among the most attractive mountain-bike destinations in Switzerland. Enduro bikers will be particularly happy trying their hand at the Bahnen tour, for example, an adventure with a total ascent of 10,000 metres. Anyone seeking rest and relaxation amid unspoilt nature should head off on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage  up the romantic side valleys of Sertig , Dischma or Flüela.

For a change of scene, visit the Davos Lake with its swimming area and a sailing and surfing centre. In addition, there are opportunities for hang-gliding and paragliding and mountain bike and inline skating routes. Davos is also the starting point for excursions on the famous Glacier  and Bernina Express  trains. Davos Klosters  – the world's best summer programme for guests From May to mid-October, guests have the opportunity to take part in over 70 free or discounted activities. Up to five reservations can be made for every person with a valid Davos guest card.  Click here for the offer: Davos Klosters Summer guest programme

The mountains are an adventure playground: marvel and let off steam in the Madrisa-Land  Alpine Adventure Park, slide down into the valley on the summer toboggan run, go on safari in the petting zoo, dive into the adventure pool or experience the thrill in the Davos Adventure Park. All this and much more is possible in Davos Klosters. And best of all: in summer, the use of the mountain railways is highly reduced from just one overnight stay.

Conferences and congresses

Davos has a long and prestigious tradition of hosting conferences and is home to an event of international renown: the World Economic Forum (WEF). Up-to-the-minute seminar facilities, combined with the change of scene provided by the mountain landscape of Davos Klosters, create excellent conditions for inspiring meetings.

Get in [ edit ]

Davos is accessible by train, bus or car.

By plane [ edit ]

The nearest commercial airport with scheduled airline service is Zürich .

By train [ edit ]

tourist office davos

It takes nearly 3 hours to reach Davos by train from Zürich. There are train connections from Zürich’s Hauptbahnhof (main station) to Davos every hour between 06:00 and 23:00. You can check timetables and other information on the official Swiss Federal Railways website [1] .

Fares to Klosters (one stop nearer to Zürich) are cheaper at Fr. 96 return in second class. The train journey between Klosters Dorf and Davos Platz, stopping at Klosters Platz and Davos Dorf on the way, takes just under half an hour. It is free for tourists with the inclusive Davos/Klosters visitor card (Gästekarte).

Air travellers may also take advantage of the Fly & Rail baggage service where baggage may be deposited, after clearing customs in Zürich, at the railway counter in the station for direct transfer to Klosters and Davos. Using this service saves the passenger the trouble of carrying luggage when changing trains at Zürich’s Main Station and Landquart. The Fly & Rail rate for luggage is Fr. 20 (US$15) per item.

By bus [ edit ]

Buses [2] [dead link] from Chur to Davos run daily. Travel time is approximately 2 hours.

During the ski season, buses travel from Zürich airport to Davos Dorf or Davos Platz every Saturday and return from Davos Dorf or Platz to the airport every Saturday in December through April. The trip takes approximately 2 hours, with a pickup at the train stations three times daily.

By car [ edit ]

It will take about 2 hours (160 kilometres/103 miles) to get to Davos by car from Zürich. From Zürich-Kloten Airport: take A51 to Zürich and look for the road signs to Chur (Expressway A), take Exit “Landquart-Davos” and follow road signs to Davos.

Get around [ edit ]

The municipal bus system is very convenient, traversing from one end of the Promenade to the other. Davos is only around 3 or 4 km long and about 1 km wide, so it is easy to get anywhere by bus or a short walk. Cabs are also available, but run about Fr. 12-15 during the day and double that at night. You should ask Gästekarte from your hotel or from the tourist office. With the Gästekarte almost all local buses, local trains and lifts are free!

Things To Do In Davos (Must-See Attractions & Fun Activities)

things to do davos

Davos is a stunning alpine town in the canton of Graubünden in eastern Switzerland. If you are a fan of skiing, chances are you have already heard of Davos, and it is also a world-renowned ski resort.

Sitting at 1,560 meters (5,120 feet) above sea level between the Pleasure and Albula Ranges of the Swiss Alps and on the banks of the river Landwasser, Davos is a bit of an alpine paradise and there is no wonder why it is home to around 11,000 people.

Historically, Davos was first populated in the 13th century when people from the upper Valais region decided to make it their home. It then became more popular in the 1800s as a wellness resort and then finally in the 1900s, it transformed into one of the top ski areas in Switzerland.

Something you might not know about Davos is that it is also the host of the World Economic Forum, and has been since 1971.

It is safe to say that a visit to Davos would certainly be a memorable one, but what are all the great things to do in Davos while you are there? Well, there is a lot to choose from and it all depends a little bit on what time of year you choose to visit.

Join me as I run through all the great things to do in Davos from amazing sights to museums, as well as great winter and summer activities. By the end of the article, you will be able to build a list of must-dos and sees for your next trip there.

Table of Contents

Sertig Valley

Sertig Valley

An experience you shouldn’t miss while staying in Davos is a visit to the Sertig Valley . Carved by a glacier thousands of years ago, its jagged cliffs, forests, and lush meadows are a sight to behold.

To reach the valley, you can catch the 308 bus from Davos Platz and in just 20 minutes you will arrive at the end of the valley.

There is a small river running along the valley floor which feeds into the Landwasser and you will find a lot of hiking trails that take you further into the valley if you want to explore.

As you stroll around, you can’t help but be impressed by the sheer scale of cliff faces around you and be charmed by the green pastures that are used as alpine farmland.

At the end of the valley, if you make it there, you will get to see the peaks of Hoch Ducan, Mittaghorn, and Plattenfluh towering above.

It is also well worth stopping off at the small traditional alpine village of Sertig Dörfli which dates back to the 13th century. It is a brilliant example of alpine culture and architecture, plus there is a restaurant where you can enjoy a spot of lunch along the way.

Lake Davos

Sitting just north of Davos is Lake Davos and spending some time around this beautiful lake is a must during your visit.

You can reach Lake Davos in an hour’s walk depending where in Davos you are staying or hop on the 304 bus from Davos Platz to Davos Dorf, Flüelastrasse and walk for 10 minutes to the lake.

The first thing you will notice is how beautiful the lake and surrounding area is. The lake is crystal clear and turquoise with green hills, forests, and mountains surrounding it on every side.

In the winter, the lake freezes over and becomes one of the most stunning natural ice skating rinks. In the summer, the lake is alive with activities.

I highly recommend taking a picnic to one of the many beaches and setting up for the day. You can sunbathe, swim, and take in the stunning scenes around you.

You can also find lots of great hiking trails around the lake, or try your hand at one of many watersports. Hire a SUP and explore, take out pedalos and kayaks, or even use the consistent winds to sail or windsurf.

You will also find lots of hotels, restaurants, and a campsite along the shores of Lake Davos if you would like to eat out or even stay by the lake during your visit.

Flüela Pass

Flüela Pass

If you are visiting Davos in the summer and love driving then grab a car and head to the Flüela Pass . This is a mountain pass with a road that will test your driving skills and some mountain scenery that might just blow your mind.

It takes around 22 minutes to drive to the pass from Davos, or if you don’t have a car, the 331 bus from Davos Platz follows the pass and will have you there in 45 minutes.

The pass connected the Landwasser Valley with Susch in the Lower Engadin and is closed in winter due to avalanches, so you can only drive it in the summer.

Along the way, you will reach an elevation of 2,383 meters and be able to see views across the Alps that include the 3000+ meter peaks of Flüela Wisshorn and Blackhorn.

See The Viaducts in the Landwasser Valley

Landwasser Viaduct

The Landwasser Valley, in which Davos is located, is named after the Landwasser River, as one might expect. It is a very long valley stretching a huge 30.5-kilometers (19.0 mi) and the river flows through it for its entirety.

The valley is no doubt beautiful, between the river, meadows, forests, and surrounding mountains, how could it not be? But, the most famous thing about the valley is its viaducts, and they are well worth seeing, along with the valley during your stay.

The most famous viaduct is the Landwasser Viaduct . It is a railway viaduct that was built between 1901 and 1902 and it is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will be amazed at its size as it is 65 meters (213 feet) high and is made up of six arches built from limestone.

The viaduct is used by the Rhaetian Railway and as you stand there looking at this feat of engineering with the magical scenery around you, you’ll sure be glad you visited.

You can also visit some of the less famous viaducts while you are there which include the Solis, Wiesen, and the Schmittentobel Viaduct. However, most people are happy just to see the Landwasser Viaduct

Madrisa Land

Madrisa Land

If you are traveling with young children then you have to take a trip to Madrisa Land , an adventure park in the Madrisa ski resort of Davos Klosters.

It takes about an hour to get to Davos Platz via a train and a gondola ride. Once you are there, you will find a ton of activities for your kids to enjoy in both winter and summer.

There is a marble run, bouncy castle, slides, water games, swings, harnessed climbing walls, tree houses, pony rides, and even an Alpine farmyard/petting zoo.

The area around Madrisa Land is also great for skiing in winter and there are some excellent hiking trails you can access in the summer.

Botanical Garden Alpinum

Botanical Garden Alpinum

The Botanical Garden Alpinum is a place you simply have to see when visiting Davos, especially if you are into plants.

Also known as Alpinum Schatzalp Botanical Garden, the Botanical Garden was founded in 1907 and has been growing bigger and bigger with more and more plants ever since.

Sitting on the edge of Schatzalp mountain, getting there involves taking the Schatzalp funicular which leaves from Davos Platz and takes just 20 minutes. It is then a short easy walk from the station to the gardens, people of any age can make it there without any worries.

What makes the botanical garden so special is the hugely diverse range of alpine flora that calls it home. It also has the largest collection of edelweiss and gentian flowers in the world which is a sight to see.

It is an amazing place to walk around as the views across the valley are stunning as you discover more and more flowers around every turn.

Kirchner Museum Davos

Kirchner Museum Davos

If you are looking for some culture during your stay in Davos or simply love art then you should head to the Kirchner Museum . It is also a great place to see when the weather isn’t playing ball!

You will find the Kirchner Museum Davos in the center of Davos and it is a museum dedicated to the German artist, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner who moved to Davos in 1917.

He is known as one of the most influential expressionists to have ever lived and as you walk around the museum seeing more than 1500 pieces of his work, you will understand why.

His art captures a lot of the issues we humans are faced with today which are caused by living the Western capital way of life.

Ride The Bernina Express or Glacier Express

Bernina Express

Both the Bernina & Glacier Express leave from Davos and these are two of the most amazing scenic train rides in the Swiss Alps, and in the world.

The Bernina Express runs from Davos to Tirano in Italy over 4 hours and the Glacier Express via a train from Davos to Filisur, runs between St. Moritz and Zermatt.

These train rides are world-famous as they take you through some of the most amazing scenery the Alps has to offer. You can take a picnic and sit next to the panoramic windows in awe, or be served an incredible lunch along with wine and champagne by the onboard restaurant.

Riding either of these trains is a great addition to a trip to Davos, and I highly recommend using one of them to get to or leave Davos or use both if you can.

Winter Activities

Davos Klosters

Davos is home to the largest ski resort in Switzerland with a ski area that is home to 300 km of stunning ski slopes to match all abilities. There are 50 ski lifts to get you up quickly, so you won’t be waiting around for a ride.

You will find some of the best ski runs in Davos Klosters are the Parsenn ski area and there is also some great skiing to be had in the Jakobshorn and Rinerhorn areas too.

If you love skiing, then Davos will be a playground you simply will not want to leave.

If you find yourself in Davos with kids during the winter, taking them sledding is a great way to keep them entertained. You can find quite a few sledding courses close to and even in the town, some of which are more adrenaline-pumping than others.

The Village Sledding track is the easiest one to get to as you simply have to hike up behind Aparthotel Muchetta . Go up as high as you like and then rush back down on the sled.

Davos Klosters also has some great sledding runs and one not to miss is the Rinerhorn sledding run with its 500-meter drop over just 3.5 km.

Ice Skating

Another great winter activity to do with the family is ice skating and you have quite a lot of options in Davos.

My favorite place to ice skate in Davos is on Lake Davos as you get to skate surrounded by nature and the impressive snow-covered landscapes.

You can also skate on the largest mobile artificial ice rink in Switzerland, which is in Davos World of Ice, or head to another natural ice rink in Davos Dorf, Seehofseeli Lake .

There are ice skates available to rent at all the mentioned ice rinks, so grab some skates and get out on the ice.

Hard Rock Hotel Davos

If you are looking for some pampering or want to rejuvenate your body after a few days of skiing, there are some amazing wellness and spa experiences to be had in Davos.

You can pick from a huge range of treatments including massages, facials, and body wraps as well as use the saunas, steam rooms, and indoor spa pools at one of the many wellness hotels in town.

Some of the top spa hotels to check out are Hard Rock Hotel Davos , Panorama Wellness & Spa, Davos Swiss Mountain Resort , and Waldhotel Davos . Their service is excellent and the spas have stunning views across the mountains.

Winter Hiking

A great way to see the winter wonderland that surrounds Davos is by doing some winter hiking. There are lots of trails to choose from, some of which you can do with the whole family. There is nothing quite like hiking through snow-covered mountains in my eyes, so don’t miss the chance to do so.

There are around 160 km of well-marked trails around Davos to follow and they are snow cleared to make it easier for everyone. You can also find some great trails in Davos Klosters, the Panorama train and scenic loop on Pischa are pretty spectacular.

Cross Country Skiing

Cross-country skiers flock to Davos every year and if you have never tried it, Davos is the place to do it. You will find over 100 km of cross-country trails to choose from ranging from beginner level all the way up to experienced.

There is no better way of seeing the mountains and valleys than doing some cross-country skiing in my eyes. Some of the best trails are in the Avos Nordic Cross-Country stadium in Davos Dorf and on Davos Klosters. Trail maps are also available if you are experienced enough to head out on your own.

Watch An Ice Hockey Match

If the weather is terrible or you love sports, head down to the Vaillant Arena to watch HC Davos play an ice hockey match against their opponents. It is a thrilling experience, to say the least, and the arena is a stunning bit of architecture that is well worth seeing.

The arena can hold around 7,000 people and when booked out, the atmosphere is electric. When you arrive in Davos, head to the arena box office to book your tickets in advance so you do not miss out.

Summer Activities

mountain biking jakobshorn davos

If you are visiting Davos during the summer then you simply have to take advantage of the hundreds of hiking trails available in the area.

There are 700 km of marked trails in Davos, so there is a lot of exploring to be had if you want it. I recommend grabbing a trail map from the tourist office and then you can choose your trails based on difficulty and what you would like to see.

You’ll find some great trails in Davos Klosters, the Kesch Trek , a trail between the famous Flüela Pass and Albula Pass is one not to miss as the scenery is some of the best in the area.

Mountain Biking

Along with 700 km of hiking trails, there are 700 km of mountain biking trails too and you can rent a bike with ease in town if you don’t have one with you.

Grabbing a trail map is a great idea so you can choose the trails that suit you best. You will also be glad to know that Davos has a trail crew that maintains them so they are ready and safe for you to ride down.

If you are an experienced mountain biker, then the trails you won’t want to miss are Jakobshorn – Sertig, Signal, and Chörbschhorn. For beginner mountain bikers, going on a guided session might be best if you want to learn more and improve.

Sailing & Windsurfing

In the summer, Lake Davos has consistent afternoon winds which have given rise to a sailing and windsurfing community.

It is an awesome place to learn to windsurf and/or sail and there are windsurfing and sailing schools in Davos with excellent instructors that will teach you everything you need to know.

If you are experienced, you can rent a board or boat and head out on a sail surrounded by mountains, it is awesome, to say the least.

Swimming & Sunbathing

There is no better way of relaxing during your summer visit to Davos than heading to the shores of Lake Davos for a sunbathing picnic and a refreshing swim.

The beach area around the lake has lovely grass lawns that are perfect for laying on during the summer and having a picnic. Taking a quick dip in the crystal clear waters to cool down and enjoy the views is one of my favorite things to do every summer afternoon in Switzerland.

Paragliding

In the summer, Davos comes alive with paragliders and there is no better way to get your adrenaline going and see unparalleled views of the Alps.

You can book a tandem flight with a qualified instructor or even join a paragliding school where you will learn how to do it for yourself.

There are three paragliding schools in Davos to choose from and be sure to book in advance as it is very weather dependent, so you might have to book out a few days to find a good weather window.

Rock Climbing

There is some great rock climbing to be had around Davos, more specifically in Davos Klosters. You have the choice of quite a few different climbing parks to choose from and they cater to everyone from beginners to serious climbers

Sunnibergbrücke Climbing is home to 20 routes and it rises up some 77 meters, with two multi-rope routes. There are a total of 2300 holds and 600 climbing meters, and the routes range from easy to super difficult.

You can either climb on an outdoor rock in the climbing gardens, on a high bridge pillar or if the weather is bad there is also an indoor climbing hall you can use.

Horse Trekking

A beautiful way to explore Davos’ surrounding mountains in the summer is to go on a horse trek. There are quite a few riding schools in Davos that offer horse trekking and you will be happy to know, the horses are very well-behaved.

Reitschule Davos Judith von Gunten GmbH is one of the top riding schools in Davos where you can learn to ride or book a horse trek into the mountains with your friends and family.

Davos Adventure Park

Davos Adventure Park

If you are traveling with your family, then a trip to Davos Adventure Park, often called Adventure Park Davos is a great way to keep the family entertained.

Kids have to be 8 years of age or above to enjoy the activities, of which there are many that adults will also love.

You can try rope climbing on the climbing wall, there are five different courses in the forest canopy to make your way across (with a harness and helmet of course), and even a bike park for kids to enjoy too.

The forest canopy courses involve climbing ladders, scrambling across rope nets, balancing as you move swinging bridges, and more. It is like a fun alpine assault course that everyone enjoys and sleeps very well after a day of rushing around.

You can find the park just outside Davos and it takes just 20 minutes to get there by bus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is davos worth a visit.

Yes, Davos is certainly worth a visit in my opinion as it has so much to offer in every season.

In winter, Davos has amazing winter sports on offer, in summer you can explore the surrounding areas in many ways and enjoy Lake Davos to the max. Then you have the cultural side of Davos and all the wonderful restaurants it has to offer, as well as excellent wellness & spa facilities.

The only tricky bit about visiting Davos is that it is expensive, and we will talk about this a lot more in the section below.

What is Davos, Switzerland known for?

There are about 5 major things that Davos, Switzerland is known for and these include being a health resort, an amazing winter sports resort, hosting the World Economic Forum, mountaineering, and its stunning scenery.

You might not know that Davos is recognized for its mountaineering history as it was from Davos that early mountaineers could access and conquer some of the most famous peaks in the Alps.

In my eyes, that is quite a combination of things to be known for, and it makes Davos somewhere that is certainly worth visiting.

Is Davos, Switzerland expensive?

Yes, Davos is an expensive place to visit, and so is Switzerland in general to be honest. But, your trip to Davos does not have to be that expensive if you are traveling on a budget.

The main costs that you can save on are accommodation and food. Eating out in Davos is expensive and you should expect to pay around $45 USD for a meal in a restaurant, without drinks. But, if you shop at the local supermarket and make your own food, then costs come down a lot.

Accommodation in Davos can cost up to $175 per night for a simple 3-star hotel, but there are hostels where it is $55 a night and if you are there in summer, you can camp for $20 a night.

Fans of "The Office": Get ready to clock back in.

Peacock has picked up a new mockumentary-style comedy from Greg Daniels , who adapted " The Office " for the U.S., and Michael Koman ("Nathan for You") in the same universe as the Dunder Mifflin crew.

The new series, set to begin production in July, stars Domhnall Gleeson (" The Patient ," "About Time") and Sabrina Impacciatore ( "The White Lotus," Season 2 ).

"The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters," Peacock said Wednesday in announcing the new and long-rumored project.

"The Office," which launched the careers of Steve Carell, John Krasinski and Mindy Kaling , concluded its nine-season NBC run in 2013, and slowly blossomed into a major hit, especially on streaming. For most of the show's run, Michael "I want people to be afraid of how much they love me" Scott (Carell) bumbled his way through leading an office of quirky characters at the Scranton, Pennsylvania, paper company. Carell left the five-time Emmy-winning show after seven seasons, but returned for its finale. In 2020, "The Office" was the most-streamed show, according to Nielsen , with more than 57 billion minutes viewed.

Facility for Rare Isotope Beams

At michigan state university, international research team uses wavefunction matching to solve quantum many-body problems, new approach makes calculations with realistic interactions possible.

FRIB researchers are part of an international research team solving challenging computational problems in quantum physics using a new method called wavefunction matching. The new approach has applications to fields such as nuclear physics, where it is enabling theoretical calculations of atomic nuclei that were previously not possible. The details are published in Nature (“Wavefunction matching for solving quantum many-body problems”) .

Ab initio methods and their computational challenges

An ab initio method describes a complex system by starting from a description of its elementary components and their interactions. For the case of nuclear physics, the elementary components are protons and neutrons. Some key questions that ab initio calculations can help address are the binding energies and properties of atomic nuclei not yet observed and linking nuclear structure to the underlying interactions among protons and neutrons.

Yet, some ab initio methods struggle to produce reliable calculations for systems with complex interactions. One such method is quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In quantum Monte Carlo simulations, quantities are computed using random or stochastic processes. While quantum Monte Carlo simulations can be efficient and powerful, they have a significant weakness: the sign problem. The sign problem develops when positive and negative weight contributions cancel each other out. This cancellation results in inaccurate final predictions. It is often the case that quantum Monte Carlo simulations can be performed for an approximate or simplified interaction, but the corresponding simulations for realistic interactions produce severe sign problems and are therefore not possible.

Using ‘plastic surgery’ to make calculations possible

The new wavefunction-matching approach is designed to solve such computational problems. The research team—from Gaziantep Islam Science and Technology University in Turkey; University of Bonn, Ruhr University Bochum, and Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany; Institute for Basic Science in South Korea; South China Normal University, Sun Yat-Sen University, and Graduate School of China Academy of Engineering Physics in China; Tbilisi State University in Georgia; CEA Paris-Saclay and Université Paris-Saclay in France; and Mississippi State University and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University (MSU)—includes  Dean Lee , professor of physics at FRIB and in MSU’s Department of Physics and Astronomy and head of the Theoretical Nuclear Science department at FRIB, and  Yuan-Zhuo Ma , postdoctoral research associate at FRIB.

“We are often faced with the situation that we can perform calculations using a simple approximate interaction, but realistic high-fidelity interactions cause severe computational problems,” said Lee. “Wavefunction matching solves this problem by doing plastic surgery. It removes the short-distance part of the high-fidelity interaction, and replaces it with the short-distance part of an easily computable interaction.”

This transformation is done in a way that preserves all of the important properties of the original realistic interaction. Since the new wavefunctions look similar to that of the easily computable interaction, researchers can now perform calculations using the easily computable interaction and apply a standard procedure for handling small corrections called perturbation theory.  A team effort

The research team applied this new method to lattice quantum Monte Carlo simulations for light nuclei, medium-mass nuclei, neutron matter, and nuclear matter. Using precise ab initio calculations, the results closely matched real-world data on nuclear properties such as size, structure, and binding energies. Calculations that were once impossible due to the sign problem can now be performed using wavefunction matching.

“It is a fantastic project and an excellent opportunity to work with the brightest nuclear scientist s in FRIB and around the globe,” said Ma. “As a theorist , I'm also very excited about programming and conducting research on the world's most powerful exascale supercomputers, such as Frontier , which allows us to implement wavefunction matching to explore the mysteries of nuclear physics.”

While the research team focused solely on quantum Monte Carlo simulations, wavefunction matching should be useful for many different ab initio approaches, including both classical and  quantum computing calculations. The researchers at FRIB worked with collaborators at institutions in China, France, Germany, South Korea, Turkey, and United States.

“The work is the culmination of effort over many years to handle the computational problems associated with realistic high-fidelity nuclear interactions,” said Lee. “It is very satisfying to see that the computational problems are cleanly resolved with this new approach. We are grateful to all of the collaboration members who contributed to this project, in particular, the lead author, Serdar Elhatisari.”

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico shot in assassination attempt

The populist prime minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico , was "fighting for his life" Wednesday after he was shot multiple times in an "attempted assassination," his party's officials said.

Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák told reporters that doctors operated into the evening and that Fico's condition was extremely serious.

"We've experienced a very tragic day, which means the prime minister is fighting for his life," Kaliňák said, according to local reports.

Late Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba offered an update to the BBC, saying Fico was "not in a life-threatening situation at this moment."

Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok earlier reporters that the gunman shot Fico five times. A suspect was arrested, officials said; a motive was not immediately clear.

Šutaj Eštok said an initial investigation found “a clear political motivation.”

Fico’s Facebook page said he was taken to a hospital in Banská Bystrica rather than in the capital, Bratislava, because "it would take too long considering the urgency of the matter."

Image:

At a news conference after the attack , President Zuzana Čaputová confirmed an arrest of a suspect and said police would provide further information.

“Until then, let us not pass quick judgments, please,” she said.

A reporter for the Slovak news agency TASR said several shots were fired in the town of Handlova, about 110 miles northeast of Bratislava. Fico was greeting members of the public after a government meeting, it reported.

Čaputová confirmed the attack on Fico, 59, shortly after the news broke.

“Utterly shocked by today’s brutal and reckless attack on #Slovakia ’s Prime Minister Robert Fico, which I condemn in strongest possible terms,” she said in a message on X . “I wish him lot of strength in this critical moment and early recovery. My thoughts are also with his family and close ones,” she added.

Photos on news agencies showed a man appearing to be detained in Handlova. Video captured at the scene and shared on social media showed another man being carried into a car by security staffers in dark suits.

A person is detained in the ground.

Fico was elected in October as leader of the leftist Smer party, meaning “direction,” standing on a pro-Russian and anti-American populist platform.

He had already served as prime minister twice before he returned to the role last year as part of a power-sharing deal with two other parties. Fico faced criticism this month as thousands of Slovaks rallied against a plan to overhaul public radio and television in the country of 5.4 million, sparking fears of government control and a shift away from pro-Western ties.

Fico has found common cause with Viktor Orbán , the right-wing authoritarian leader of Hungary, Slovakia's neighbor to the south, in ending support for Ukraine's defense against Russia's invasion and criticizing Western support for Kyiv. Slovakia also shares a border with Ukraine.

Both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin gave public support to Fico.

Putin said in a letter to Čaputová shared by the Kremlin that the "heinous crime cannot be justified," and Zelenskyy post ed on X that "every effort should be made to ensure that violence does not become the norm in any country, form, or sphere."

President Joe Biden also wished Fico a "speedy recovery" and said in a statement that the U.S. Embassy was in contact with the Slovakian government and "ready to assist."

Robert Fico.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, the executive body of the European Union, also strongly condemned the attempt on Fico's life.

“Such acts of violence have no place in our society and undermine democracy, our most precious common good,” she said in a post on X .

Slovakia is an E.U. member.

Slovakia’s main opposition parties canceled a planned protest against a plan to overhaul public broadcasting that they say would give Fico's government full control of public radio and television, according to The Associated Press.

“We absolutely and strongly condemn violence and today’s shooting of Premier Robert Fico,” Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Šimečka said. “At the same time we call on all politicians to refrain from any expressions and steps which could contribute to further increasing the tension.”

The country’s incoming president, Peter Pellegrini, a close Fico ally, said the incident represented "an unprecedented threat to Slovak democracy."

He added, "If we express different political opinions with guns in the squares and not in polling stations, we endanger everything we have built together in 31 years of Slovak sovereignty."

Trump’s lawyer charges Michael Cohen lied to jury

Angry defense lawyer shouts in confrontation with Donald Trump’s former fixer, who stayed calm in his third day of testimony.

NEW YORK — The central witness against Donald Trump withstood a withering cross-examination Thursday from the former president’s defense lawyer, who accused Michael Cohen of lying as recently as two days ago to realize his dreams of revenge against his ex-boss.

The confrontation between Cohen and Trump lawyer Todd Blanche was the most anticipated moment in the month-long trial, which is now speeding toward a conclusion. Because the trial is off Friday, the jurors will have three days to weigh Cohen’s answers. His cross-examination will continue Monday morning, setting the stage for closing arguments next week.

New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan told the lawyers that he would try to make sure those arguments don’t stretch out over more than one day, but he warned that they might because of scheduling demands of the jurors and other logistics issues.

The day’s testimony was closely watched by a cadre of Trump’s political allies sitting behind him in court, including Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.). There were so many congressional Republicans in court in New York that a House Oversight Committee hearing in Washington was delayed .

Trump, who paid close attention Thursday to Blanche’s questioning of Cohen, has still not decided whether he will take the stand, Blanche told the judge. Most defendants do not testify at their trials, believing the risks of being questioned by prosecutors under oath are simply too great.

Trump hush money trial

In his third day on the witness stand, Cohen remained calm and quiet — speaking in a slow, sometimes raspy voice as Blanche challenged his truthfulness again and again. At one point, Blanche shouted that Cohen was a liar.

Cohen’s ability to keep his cool under pressure is an important measuring stick for the prosecutors’ chances of success.

Perhaps more importantly, the jury must decide whether they believe the only witness who directly ties Trump to an alleged scheme to falsify business records to cover up hush money payments to a porn star.

Cohen, a disbarred and convicted former lawyer , has admitted that he lied for Trump for years; it would be a far more serious threat to the prosecution case if jurors came to suspect he lied to them.

Trump is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg . The indictment accuses Trump of creating a false paper trail to hide the fact that adult-film star Stormy Daniels was paid $130,000 in October 2016 to stay silent about her claim to have had sex with Trump years earlier. Trump denies the two had sex.

Cohen is instrumental to the prosecution case because he paid Daniels with his own money; the following year, the lawyer was given monthly payments from Trump in what prosecutors say was a corrupt scheme to reimburse him and keep Daniels’s allegations under wraps. Cohen is the only witness who has described conversations with Trump in which he said it was clear that his boss understood they would create the false paper trail.

The angriest and potentially most consequential moment in Thursday’s testimony came when Blanche confronted Cohen over his claim that he spoke to Trump on the evening of Oct. 24, 2016, when he called the phone of Trump’s security chief, Keith Schiller.

Cohen testified Tuesday that during the phone call, he told Trump the plan to pay hush money to Daniels was moving forward.

Blanche, however, presented text messages between Schiller and Cohen that preceded that call and suggested an entirely different reason for the conversation. In those texts, Cohen complained about getting harassing phone calls and asked for Schiller’s help. “Call me,” Schiller replied.

After hours of mild-mannered and patient questioning of Cohen, Blanche erupted as he confronted Cohen over the Schiller texts. Accusing Cohen of fabricating key evidence against his client, the lawyer angrily grabbed the microphone and raised his voice.

“That was a lie! You did not talk to President Trump that night!” Blanche bellowed.

Blanche suggested the call was simply too short for it to have included Schiller handing his phone to his boss so he and Cohen could discuss a financial transaction that would ultimately be the genesis of criminal charges against Trump.

“I’m not sure that’s accurate,” Cohen said.

He tried to revise his earlier account, saying he “also spoke to Mr. Trump and told him that everything regarding the Stormy Daniels matter was being worked on and it’s going to be resolved.”

The back-and-forth was the most tense moment yet of Cohen’s cross-examination, and of the entire trial.

But a quieter exchange may prove more damaging to Cohen’s credibility. It happened when Blanche asked Cohen if he had been willing to lie under oath while pleading guilty to tax crimes “because the stakes affected you personally.”

Cohen agreed that he had been.

A few minutes later, Blanche asked Cohen whether “the outcome of this trial affects you personally.”

Again, Cohen said: “Yes.”

Throughout the day, Blanche tried to methodically rip apart the prosecution portrait of Cohen as a remorseful, reformed henchman , using elements of Cohen’s prior testimony to suggest to the jury that he is a singularly selfish person .

Wearing a pale yellow tie, dark suit and dark-rimmed glasses, Cohen met Blanche’s indignation with a calm insistence that whatever his faults, his story about Trump’s guilt was true.

Yet he also struggled to explain why he told a congressional committee in 2019 that he never sought and would never seek a pardon from Trump, when his lawyer was doing just that . (Cohen called it a “misstatement.”) Or how he could claim to have accepted responsibility for financial crimes, but also call the prosecutor and judge in that case corrupt.

On the stand, Cohen said the fault for what happened lay with his bank, his accountant and others.

“You’ve blamed a lot of people over the years for the conduct you were convicted of, yes?” Blanche asked.

“I blame people, yes,” he replied.

Cohen also admitted that he often recorded his conversations with people without their knowledge, including at one point Trump, who at the time was his legal client.

Blanche played for the jury two short recordings of a bombastic Cohen talking about how joyful he was over Trump’s indictment and the prospect of the former president possibly going to jail. Cohen has continued to rail publicly against Trump, on podcasts, social media and in news interviews, despite repeated entreaties from the prosecutors for him to stop.

“I truly f---ing hope that this man ends up in prison,” Cohen said on a podcast excerpt played for the jury Thursday. “Revenge is a dish best served cold, and you best believe I want this man to go down and rot inside for what he did to my family.”

In another podcast clip, this one from May of last year, weeks after Trump’s indictment in this case, Cohen declared: “I want to thank the Manhattan district attorney’s office and their fearless leader Alvin Bragg, with whom I spent countless hours.”

On the witness stand, Cohen conceded that he had not in fact met or spent time with Bragg.

The district attorney has attended the trial intermittently but was not in court Thursday. The trial is off Friday so that Trump can attend his son’s high school graduation.

Just before court ended for the day, Blanche asked about a 2016 conversation in which Cohen reassured a reporter that the story about a Trump-Daniels encounter was false. In the phone call, Cohen told the reporter to believe Cohen because he is “a really bad liar.”

On the stand, Cohen acknowledged that he was lying at the time.
