The Best Things to Do on Tybee Island, Georgia

Climb the historic tybee island light station..

Climb all 178 steps of the Tybee Island Light Station, and you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous views of the island and coastline!

Once you reach the top, you can walk 360 degrees around the top of the lighthouse in order to enjoy the view from all angles.

At 145 feet tall and with a history going back more than 250 years (though it has been rebuilt several times), the Tybee Island Light Station is both the tallest and the oldest lighthouse in Georgia.

Without a doubt, climbing the lighthouse is one of the most iconic activities in Tybee, and should not be missed!

Once you finish climbing the lighthouse, you can also explore the 3 Light Keeper’s cottages that are on the property and explore the history of the lighthouse and the people who worked with it.

Kayak to Little Tybee Island.

Here’s a twist: “Little Tybee Island” is actually twice the size of Tybee Island itself!

This quiet, uninhabited island is a nature preserve, and can only be accessed by water.

While visitors can easily rent a boat to experience this unique island, a more hands-on approach is simply to kayak from Back River over to Little Tybee Island.

No matter how you choose to get there, be sure to ask about the tides and keep an eye on the time: the tide dramatically changes Little Tybee Island as it moves in and out.

Soak in the views from the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion.

One of the most-visited places on Tybee Island, the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion has a long history in Georgia.

The original pier dates to 1891, though it burned down in the 1960s before being rebuilt into the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion we know and love today.

Located at the end of Tybrisa Street, the pier is known for its beautiful views, fishing opportunities, and being a popular place to hold events on the island (you can even rent the pavilion for weddings!).

Tybee Island may be known as one of the best day trips from Savannah , but if you’d rather stay at the beach, there’s no reason why you can’t flip that around and visit Savannah as a day trip from Tybee instead!

While you’re there, explore some of the 22 squares of Savannah, stroll down Jones Street, explore Forsyth Park, tour a house museum or two, and check out the popular River Street.

One day won’t be enough to cover all the fun things to do in Savannah , but you can certainly get a taste (literally and figuratively– Savannah’s restaurant scene is magnificent) of one of the most beautiful cities in the USA!

Visit Fort Pulaski National Monument.

Located on Cockspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island, Fort Pulaski National Monument is a fantastic place to stop when driving between the two destinations.

Built in the mid-19th century and surrounded by an impressive moat, Fort Pulaski is an imposing structure that is packed with history.

Like so many forts along the Atlantic Coast, Fort Pulaski played a role in the Civil War.

The sole battle that took place at Fort Pulaski was between Union and Confederate troops, which ended in the Union taking control of the fort in 1862 and maintaining control of it from then on.

While you’re there, be sure to tour the fort and associated museum, as well as sample one of the beautiful nature trails that show off views of the Savannah River, the surrounding marsh, Tybee Island, and more.

Tybee island is a barrier island near Savannah, Georgia. It’s the closest beach to Savannah and is known for its incredible beaches. There is so much to do and see in Savannah and visiting this island in the south USA is a real treat.

Tybee Island, GA has coastal charm and beach vibes all mixed with history, shopping, and some great dining. At just 3 miles square you might be surprised at how much it has to offer.

Whether you like relaxing on the sand, swimming in the waters, exploring on a bike, or dining in one of the restaurants this small island will not disappoint.

The beaches here are wide, the water perfect for children and the atmosphere is vibrant. This is a place rich in culture, nature, and history.

Relax On One of the Beaches.

When you talk about the beach on this island most assume there is just one main beach but that isn’t the case. You actually have five main beaches and each of them has a different vibe so choose the one that best suits you. Going to one of the beaches is definitely one of the best things to do in Tybee Island GA.

North Beach tends to be the most popular and it is from here you can watch the cargo ships coming in and out of Savannah. You are also likely to see dolphins too.

South Beach is where you will find the Tybee Pier and Pavilion. You will find most of the island attractions here. This beach is also the one that gets the most crowded.

Savannah River Beach has gentle waves and is perfect for small children. It’s not that easy to get to but you can access it from North Beach.

Mid Beach is the beach where the locals tend to go. It is the beach running adjacent to 1st St and 14th St.

Back River Beach curves around the bottom tip of the island and is the best place on the island to watch the sunset. This beach tends to be much quieter than the others and is a very relaxing place to be. You can also see Little Tybee Island from this beach. This beach runs from 18th Street to the Back River Fishing Pier.

And the best thing about the beaches is that is one of the free things to do in Tybee Island.

Go Kayaking

If you love kayaking and paddleboarding then this Island is the place for you. If you get into the waterways a whole different world of flora, fauna, and wildlife opens up to you. Tybee Island activities don’t get better than this.

There are places you can hire if you don’t have your own equipment and there are also tours if you want to get the best out of the experience.

Kayaking to Littel Tybee island or Horspen Creek is a great way to get a feel for this place. Obviously how much you explore will depend on your confidence and ability but there is so much to see from the kayak in this amazing place.

Go Looking For Dolphins

Chances are while at Tybee Island, GA you will see dolphins from the shore. However, nothing quite lives up to watching them close up swimming beside a boat. It’s one of the best activities in Tybee Island.

There are tours you can get on and even a sunset cruise if you are after a romantic experience. The tours also take you past Cockspur Lighthouse, Fort Pulaski, and the Tybee Lighthouse so you also get to see the sights.

The best time to see dolphins is in the spring and summer and while some can be spotted in the colder months there arent nearly as many.

Tybee Island Pier

The pier was established in 1891 by the Central of Georgia Railroad and is a must-visit while on the island. It’s one of the free things to do in Tybee Island. While the breeze is a welcome relief during the day the best time to visit is in the evening.

In the evening the sunsets here are incredible and if you go early grab a picnic table and bring some food and drinks it will just be perfect.

This pier is an excellent spot for people watching and fishing. If you are looking for things to do in Tybee Island at night then this is it.

Tybee Island Lighthouse

Situated on the north end of the island next to the Savannah River entrance the lighthouse is a must-visit. It’s one of seven surviving colonial-era lighthouse towers. Visiting the lighthouse is one of the best activities in Tybee Island.

The lighthouse is the oldest and tallest in GA and is one of the most intact historical lighthouses in the whole of America. There has been a lighthouse on this spot since 1736 and the one you see today is the fourth dating from 1866.

The history of the lighthouse is long, varied, and really interesting. You can climb the 178 steps and the view from the top is amazing.

If you love history then this is one of the best things to do in Tybee Island, Georgia.

Fort Pulaski National Monument

Between Tybee Island and Savanah, you will find Fort Pulaski. This 260-acre site is part of the National Park Service and is one of the best National Parks in Georgia .

If you love history it’s the place for you. The fort was constructed in 1874 to defend Savannah. Daily they offer guided tours, weapon demos, and fort orientations.

It’s also in a beautiful location among lots of nature, Here you will find trails, marshes, and small beaches to hike around.

The fort was declared a National Monument in 1924 and was ranked as the “most spectacular harbor defense structure” in the United States during the Civil War era. Rooms within the fort are preserved with period fittings so you really get a feeling of what this place was like.

Definitely one of the top things to do near Tybee Island. It can rival any of the State Parks in Georgia .

Tybee Island Marine Science Center

If the weather isn’t in your favor when you visit then a visit to the Marine Science Center is a great rainy day activity. It’s one of the best things to do in Tybee Island with kids

The Marine Science Center is a not-for-profit educational center situated on Meddin Drive. There aim to inspire with informative hands-on and interactive exhibits.

The touch tanks are one of the great things to do here, kids will love them. And you could while away many hours staring at the stock aquariums.

The place is all about teaching responsible stewardship of coastal resources. There is so much more to do here than you think and it is a great way to spend some time.

Get On Your Bike

If you fancy exploring the island in a different way then get on a bike. Either bring your own or rent one when you get here. If you are wondering what to do in Tybee Island renting a bike is a great option.

The island is small and easy to navigate so adventuring on the bike is fun and you’ll get to see some of the more remote spots. It’s also very flat you will be pleased to hear with no real traffic issues.

Getting out on a bike is a great way to really enjoy the island and go at your own pace. This is one of the Tybee Island activities that everyone will enjoy.

Go On A Fossil Hunt

Fancy taking your family out to search for fossils while Tybee Island is the place. The waters around the island were home to the Megladon 2 million years ago.

Huge fossils relating to this beast have been found on TI so you never know what you might find.

Head out on the beach yourself or go on one of the organized fossil hunts. Sounds like a great way to spend some time and imagine how great it will be when you find something. This is one of the things to do in Tybee Island with kids.

North Pier Nature Trail

If you want to get away from the busy areas and out in nature how about the North Pier Nature Trail. There is more to see on this island than you might first think.

The trail gives you opportunities to see wildlife and some interesting flowers and fauna. It will take you past picnic spots, beaches, and marshlands.

If you are after some peace and quiet then this is perfect. Hiking this trail is one of the best activities in Tybee Island, GA.

Tybee Post Theater

If you have time then grabbing a show at the Tybee Post Theater is one of the fun things to do in Tybee Island. The theatre was constructed in 1930 and provides some great evening entertainment.

The shows here are engaging and entraining. They put on live music, plays, and comedy show here. A visit here is one of the best things to do in Tybee Island for adults.

Go On A Ecology Trip

If you want to learn about the island beaches and the local environment then perhaps an ecology trip on the island is for you.

You can explore sandy beaches, tidal pools, and rocky inlets with marine scientist/biologist Dr. Joe Richardson. You will learn all about the unique coastal habitats in this area on one of the Beach Ecology Trips.

The trips cater to pretty much everyone and you explore tidal pools, collect specimens, and generally learn about the ecology of the area.

Cockspur Island Lighthouse

Cockspur Island is within the boundaries of the Fort Pulaski National Monument. It is in the south channel of the Savannah River near Lazaretto Creek.

It’s home to the Cockspur Island Lighthouse and while the island is closed for preservation efforts there is an overlook trail that offers visitors the best chance to get a closer look at the lighthouse today. The best viewpoint is on the Lighthouse Trail.

The lighthouse dates from 1854 and one of the most interesting facts are that it survived the bombardment of Fort Pulaski, despite being directly in the line of fire.

It is one of five surviving historic lighthouses in Georgia. You can also view the lighthouse from a boat on the water. This is one of the places to visit in Tybee Island

Battery Garland

Located in Fort Screven is the historical landmark Battery Garland. The old gun battery is now converted into a museum that features artifacts and exhibits related to the local history. It’s one of the best attractions in Tybee Island, Georgia.

Created in 1897 Fort Screven was an integral part of America’s Coastal Defense system. The museum charts the importance and this and other historical landmarks in the area.

Visit The End Of US Highway 80

US Highway 80 terminates in Tylee Island. The final stretch follows Butler Avenue across Tybee Island.

The highway’s end is marked by a small monument at the intersection of Butler and Tybrisa Street and the highway terminates at 19th Street, a few hundred feet from the Atlantic Ocean.

If you are someone who loves to get photos with this kind of stuff then now is your chance.

US 80 was among the original 1926 routes and was once part of the early auto trail known as the Dixie Overland Highway. it was originally a cross-country route, from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, and went to San Diego. It now runs from Texas to Tybee Island.

This is definitely one of the things to do on Tybee Island for those who like a great photo opportunity.

Grab An Ice Cream Downtown

The South Beach area is considered downtown on Tybee Island. It’s full of shops restaurants bars and attractions. It’s a great place to wander around and even better with ice cream in hand.

The Sugar Shack seems to be the place that everyone flocks to. Its been here for 30 years and this family-run business serves incredible ice cream. Seaweeds are also another great ice cream shop with lots of choices. Jimmy’s Seaside Sweets also claims to have the best ice cream in the world.

Ice cream seems to be somewhat of a tradition on this small island and when you taste one you will see why. One of the best things to do in Tybee Island especially if you have a sweet tooth.

Tybee Island Georgia: 2024 First-Timer’s Guide

Tybee Island is one of 14 barrier islands along the beautiful Georgia Coast . Famed for its laid-back beaches, a picturesque back river area, and its somewhat turbulent history, there’s plenty to do on Tybee Island for beach goers, active travelers, and history buffs alike!

Tybee is also one of the closest beaches to Savannah , since it’s only a 25-minute drive from the city. In fact, because it’s so close, Tybee is nicknamed “Savannah’s Beach.”

The island is loaded with colorful cottages, seafood restaurants, bars, and kitschy souvenir shops. It’s not exactly what I’d call an upscale vacation destination (as evidenced by its second nickname, the “Redneck Riviera”).

Read on to discover everything you need to know if you’re planning to visit Tybee Island for the first time.

Visiting Tybee Island, Georgia

The two most popular seasons to visit Tybee Island are the spring and summer months. That’s when the weather is at its best and you can enjoy long days at the beach.

The water is warm enough for swimming from April through September, and those are also the months when lifeguards patrol the beach.

Once late August hits, peak Atlantic hurricane season begins and continues through early November.

During the winter months, Tybee turns into more of a ghost town. Although the locals stick around, it definitely lacks the vibrancy of tourism season.

Some of the businesses close down during the off season, as well.

If you’re curious, my favorite time to visit Tybee is early May.

Important Considerations

There are a few important considerations to factor in when you’re planning a trip to Tybee. Some of these might be “make or break” sticking points, so I want to make sure I mention them early on!

• Tybee Island’s beaches are NOT dog friendly. Fines are generous if you get caught with your dog on the beach, so avoid that at all costs.
• The hourly parking fees (and associated fines) are steep on Tybee, so it’s a perk when hotels or home rentals offer dedicated off-street parking.
• There’s only one way on or off the island by vehicle, so if anything blocks the road (floods or an accident, for example), you might get stuck for extended periods of time.
• “Orange Crush” is one of the biggest annual events that takes place on Tybee Island, and it isn’t exactly known for its family-friendly vibes. If you’re planning a family vacation, you’ll likely want to avoid that week. Orange Crush usually takes place towards late spring, so keep that in mind when making plans.

Savannah to Tybee Island

Tybee Island is only 18 miles from Savannah, so it’s an approximate 25-minute drive from the Historic District with no traffic. However, it’s worth noting that during high season it can take an hour or more to get there.

If you want to avoid the hassle of parking, the island is close enough that you can grab an Uber or Lyft for reasonable rates.

Those ride-share services typically charge around $30 each way, but you can check the fare estimators on each site to get a quote before committing to a ride.

Make note that it’s much easier to find a ride out to Tybee than it is to get a ride back to Savannah (since the drivers rarely hang out on the island), so it’s best to pre-schedule your ride home.

There are also a few companies that run shuttles between Savannah and Tybee Island.

If you want the whole experience planned for you, with round-trip transportation from your hotel, beach towels, chairs, umbrellas, and coolers, I suggest this Tybee day tripper experience .

Finally, you can also rent a car for the day through Turo or Discover Cars .

If you go that route, I suggest visiting a few of the other attractions on the outskirts of Savannah while you have the rental. Bonaventure Cemetery and Wormsloe Historic Site are a couple popular ones!

Tybee Island Parking

If you drive to Tybee, you’re going to have to pay for parking — there’s virtually no getting around it. Paid parking is in effect on the island from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 365 days a year.

That’s right, folks… you don’t even get a break for Christmas! (Maybe Scrooge lives on Tybee?)

As of March 1, 2023, parking rates on the island officially increased to $4/hour.

If you pay at a kiosk and get a printed receipt, be sure to display the receipt on your dashboard. It’s called “Pay and Display,” and as long as that receipt is visible and you are within your time limit, you can park in any paid parking spot.

(Hopefully that makes sense? You can park, display your ticket, and then move to a better spot while still using the same ticket. That’s handy if you park in full sun and then a nice shady space opens up!)

Vacation rentals are plentiful on Tybee Island. So much so, in fact, that the city recently had to place a moratorium on allowing any new ones!

You’ll find adorable small cottages on the north end of the island, while the Back River Beach area offers the most exclusive (and priciest!) homes.

Things To Do on Tybee Island

There are a whole slew of fun things to do on Tybee for every type of traveler — whether you prefer to laze on the beach, spend the day on the water, or learn the history of the island.

Dolphin Tours

The waters surrounding Tybee are a popular playground for bottlenose dolphin, so it’s practically guaranteed you’ll spot some if you take a dolphin tour around the island.

Dolphin tours typically last an hour to an hour and a half. You can choose a daytime tour or a sunset dolphin tour if you want to make it a little more magical.

Tybee Beach Day-Tripper Experience

If you’re staying in Savannah, you can book a beach day experience that includes round-trip transportation to Tybee Island from your hotel or home rental in downtown Savannah.

This is a great way to have a stress-free day on Tybee without worrying about transportation, parking issues, extra fees, or accommodations.

The experience includes beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels. On top of that, you’ll also get a cooler with ice to stash your drinks! That’s great whether you want cold beers on the beach with friends or prefer water and soft drinks for a family outing.

Go for a Stroll on the Beach

A stroll on the beach can be a relaxing activity, and Tybee has roughly three miles of ocean-facing walks, plus an another approximate two miles of river-facing views.

I prefer my beaches in more of a natural state, like Cumberland Island or Hunting Island State Park, but I can’t argue with all the people who love Tybee’s beaches! They’re great for people watching, and you can even watch cargo ships sail into port along the north end of the island.

Make note that there aren’t many shells on Tybee Island. That makes it comfortable to walk barefoot in the sand, but it’s not so great if you’re a shell seeker.

Visit the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum

Tybee Island is home to the tallest and oldest lighthouse in Georgia. The 145-foot-tall structure dates to 1736. Climbing the 178 steps to the top is a great way to see sweeping views of the island and beyond.

Next to the lighthouse, there are three Light Keeper’s Cottages, a small summer kitchen from 1812 that houses archeological finds from the island, and the Tybee Island Museum.

The museum is located inside an old military battery from 1899. It contains exhibits showcasing the island’s history ranging from its earliest-known inhabitants, the Native American Euchee tribe, to the mid-1900s Golden Era in U.S. history.

NOTE: The museum is closed on Tuesdays and some public holidays, and the lighthouse closes whenever there is bad weather in the vicinity. There is free parking on site (2 hour max limit) for visitors who purchase a museum ticket.

Fish from the Tybee Island Pier

If you want to try your luck at fishing, you can toss a line off the Tybee Island Pier. Just make sure you have a valid saltwater fishing license, which you can purchase from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) .

A few species you might reel in include drum, stingrays, flounder, and whiting. The best time of year for fishing falls between April and October.

If you don’t have your own fishing gear, you can rent for the day from a few different tackle shops on the island or stop by Walmart on your way to Tybee. (You’ll pass it on the drive in.)

Visit the Tybee Marine Science Center

The goal of the Marine Science Center is to create awareness about marine conservation and research through education.

As part of that education, the center offers activities such as beach walks and marsh treks, where you can learn more about the importance of Georgia’s barrier islands and salt marshes.

They also have exhibits with a wealth of information about the indigenous plants and wildlife found along the Georgia Coast — including everything from alligators to corn snakes to clownfish.

During sea turtle nesting season, which begins May 1st, volunteers from the Tybee Marine Science Center work to ensure a safe nesting season for the endangered species.

They help protect the nests, assist hatchlings as they make their way to the water, and they monitor nests after the babies have left so they can support any late hatchlings.

In 2020, they kept a late hatchling and named him Ike. You can visit him at the Marine Science Center!

Kayak along the Back River

If you’re looking for an active adventure, why not go kayaking to uncover the incredible wildlife and serene beauty of the back river area?

You might see osprey, turtles, or dolphin while kayaking in Tybee Creek, Oyster Creek, or the nearby Bull River.

There are multiple places in the area to rent kayaks, and each operation should provide safety instructions and life vests. You can choose to go on your own or join a group tour, but I recommend group tours for first-time visitors.

The advantage of a group tour is that the guides will provide information about the creeks and wildlife in the area, and you’ll have a helper who is certified in first aid within reach should anything happen.

Explore Fort Pulaski

Fort Pulaski National Monument sits on Cockspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island as a great reminder of the Civil War. It was the site of one of the major battles of the war and one of the first places major rifled artillery was used in battle.

Today, it’s one of the best-preserved masonry fortifications from the 19th century!

You can visit the fortress on a guided tour on weekdays and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday tours take places at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The tours last 45 minutes are are perfect for history buffs who want to learn more about the fortress.

Rent a Bike

Renting a bike is a nice way to explore the island while avoiding the hassle of driving around in search of parking. There are many bike rental shops on the island, and you can rent one for a few hours or a few days.

There are plenty of quiet roads on the island where you can take kids exploring without worrying about traffic, but do make note that many of the main roads get very busy over the holidays and during peak tourism season.

The island isn’t very big, so while it would take a long stretch of time to walk from one end to the other, taking a bike ride to see the cute cottages and catch a sunset along the river makes it much more comfortable.

Grab Ice Cream or Drinks by the Water

No trip to Tybee Island would be complete without grabbing ice cream or a cold drink near the waterfront. There are plenty of colorful bars and snack shops where you can do just that!

You’ll find the highest concentration along Tybrisa Street, including the adorable new Boardwalk Ice Cream Shop.

Restaurants on Tybee Island

Whenever you’re hungry, the worst thing that can happen is that you end up walking in circles trying to find a decent place to eat. It’s even worse if that place turns out to be subpar!

To help you find the best restaurants on Tybee Island, I’ve listed a few of my favorites for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Sunrise Cafe

This casual breakfast spot is a classic that has been serving Tybee Island for decades. Their breakfast menu offers a wide variety of sandwiches, omelets, made-from-scratch biscuits, waffles, and pancakes. Even if you have picky eaters in your group, you can find something for everyone at Sunrise Cafe!

Raw Ingredients

If you’re craving sushi, this is a great spot! They have a solid menu of nigiri, sashimi, classic rolls, specialty rolls, and create-your-own protein bowls.

Sundae Cafe

Not to be confused with Sun rise Cafe, Sun dae Cafe is a long-time favorite amongst locals. They serve a wide variety of lunch and dinner options that include meat, seafood, and burgers.

Bubba Gumbo’s

I have to thank Bonaventure Don for cluing me in to this spot! Bubba Gumbo’s is a laid-back, surf-style restaurant located alongside a working marina. It’s one of the only spots on Tybee where you can get fresh-caught Wild Georgia shrimp! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

Sea Wolf Tybee

Now, if it’s dinner and drinks you’re after, you’ll find both on the menu at Sea Wolf. The restaurant serves up everything from gourmet hot dogs to oysters to vegan tacos (talk about an eclectic mix!), and they have a wide variety of cocktails, beer, and wine. This is another spot with a little something for everyone.

The Crab Shack

I guess I can’t mention restaurants on Tybee without bringing up The Crab Shack, but I’ll just say I don’t understand the appeal. The restaurant was featured on a short-lived TV series, and they have alligators on site that you can feed, so that’s a big draw for kids.

Best Beach on Tybee Island

It’s always difficult to choose a “best of” option, since my pick for the best type of beach probably differs wildly from someone who is 25 years younger (or older) than my current middle-of-the-road age of 50.

I’ll briefly summarize the options to help you select your favorite, then I’ll link to a different post I’ve written that goes very in-depth about each spot.

North Beach

North Beach is one of the first ocean-facing beaches you’ll reach when you drive onto the island. It’s where you’ll find the Tybee Island Lighthouse and can see cargo ships passing by as they make their way into the mouth of the Savannah River.

It’s one of the best beaches on Tybee Island if you’re into photography! You can get classic “Tybee” shots from the beach with the sunset and the lighthouse in the background.

North Beach has lifeguard stands, public restrooms, changing stations, and a decent number of restaurants and snack stands. Parking is plentiful, and the beach typically isn’t overly crowded.

Mid Beach is aptly named, since it’s a middle-of-the-road type of beach. It doesn’t really stand out in my mind for any particular reason.

The Mid Beach area has lifeguard stands and a decent number of restaurants within easy walking distance. It’s a busy spot, but not overly so.

There are plenty of hotels and home rentals in this area. The parking is primarily street parking, but it’s plentiful.

South Beach

Pardon the improper grammar, but South Beach is where the party’s at .

If you’re looking for crowds, you’ll find them in the South Beach area. The popular pier and pavilion is located in South Beach, too.

The South Beach zone has lifeguard stands, plenty of parking, restrooms, and changing stations. You’ll also find a wide variety of bars, restaurants, and short-term rentals in this area.

Back River Beach

My personal favorite beach on Tybee Island is the Back River Beach area. (Remember, though…I prefer quieter, more natural beach areas.)

This is a peaceful beach, and it’s the perfect spot to escape the crowds. It’s a great place for romantic strolls or relaxing on a beach swing while catching a beautiful sunset over Little Tybee Island.

The Back River Beach is river facing, so the waves are small and look more like something you’d see in a lake. The area does not have lifeguard stands, and you’ll have to walk a bit to find a public restroom.

This section of the beach is lined with high-end homes that act as short-term rentals or second homes for some of Savannah’s wealthier residents.

Either you’re getting paid to tout the restaurants you mention or you just don’t really know Tybee. I agree that The Crab Shack’s food is overrated, but the atmosphere is good, especially for children. But Sundae Cafe for lunch instead of dinner? How about great food and margaritas at casual Sting Ray’s, gorgeous sunset dinners at AJ’s, fine food at Pier 16, or fun with the locals at Huckapoo’s. We love Sunrise Cafe, but don’t you think first-timers might want to try the famous Breakfast Club? Eat upstairs at Fannie’s and watch the waves roll in. And don’t forget to have ice cream for desert at The Sugar Shack.

I can assure you I don’t get paid to mention restaurants on this guide. In fact, I have a policy not to accept sponsored meals. I also never ask for any special favors when I visit a restaurant. I pay out of pocket for every meal and usually tip at least 25%. (I have the receipts, since I save them all for tax purposes!)

I mentioned that The Crab Shack is fun for kids, I simply said I don’t personally understand the appeal since I think the food is better at other spots. You’re entitled to your opinion, just as the restaurants I listed are my opinions. I haven’t tried Pier 16 yet, but am really looking forward to doing so soon! Sundae Cafe is great for lunch or dinner, and I mentioned that in the writeup. AJ’s has nice sunsets, but I had already listed Bubba Gumbos — which also has really pretty sunsets. I didn’t want the list to get too long, so I simply listed a handful of worthy spots on the island to try.

Since this website is based on Savannah, I don’t go very in-depth on Tybee topics. Most readers simply go there for a quick day trip, so I wrote the post to provide a quick overview. If I ever write a detailed post about Tybee restaurants, it’ll include more restaurants!

I enjoyed visiting Tybee as a day trip from Savannah. The island is filled with plenty of outdoor activities and peaceful beaches, and it’s a favorite for seeing loggerhead turtles.

Tybee Island is a colorful beach town located on the eastern coast of Georgia. The destination is a gem, and the sand shores draws travelers from Savannah during the summer.

The island doesn’t just sport pristine beaches, but also a majestic lighthouse and natural beauty that you’ll want to add to your itinerary .

Tybee is a popular destination for day trips from Savannah. It is about a 45-minute drive by car via Interstates 95 and 16.

The Best Time to Visits Tybee Island

When it comes to visiting Tybee Island, everyone can soak up the charm of sun-kissed beaches during the summer months from June to September. During this period, the island is brimming with excited vacationers seeking respite.

To beat the heat, the best time to visit for outdoor activities in from early April to late May.

Visiting during the Fall months, from September to November, are also great choices. As the school year welcomes students back, visitors can still enjoy pleasant weather and a more tranquil atmosphere.

Winter extends from December to February with much cooler temperatures. However, Tybee remains just as welcoming and quaint. Cozy up in a nice rental, go for cool morning walks and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate in a laid-back atmosphere.

March and April are transitional months with high winds that become less mischievous as the spring season nears.

Best Things to Do on Tybee Island

Sail away in style.

Explore the ethereal natural beauty of Tybee’s back river and salt marshes on a boat. The Island attracts many visitors to island soothing saltwater that is also known for its healing qualities.

Crab Creek Charters has several options for exploring the area on water. Book a full day of sailing, go fishing, or take an eco-tour with a group of up to 6 people. There are a few other charter companies in the area, including Bull River Marina, Old Coast Adventure , and Anchors Away Sailing. However, I think they all share the reservation system when booked online.

Nevertheless, the Island’s tranquil coast is a therapy for the soul and mind.

Join the Farm-to-Fork Fete

It’s small. It’s quaint. But best of all, it is not overly crowded.

The Tybee Island Farmer’s Market is open on Mondays from 4 to 7pm and sources beautiful fruits, delicious vegetables, fresh eggs, artisan pastries, specialty products, and more from local producers. The reusable tote bag with loggerhead turtle bursting from its shell is too cute for words.

Stop each for local bits too! There is a great variety of baked goods, a lively atmosphere, friendly vendors, and a celebration of all things local.

Escape to Sun-kissed Shores

On my last trip to Tybee Island during the month of October, we spent the afternoon at the beach. It was a beautiful but cloudy day. The temperature was cool with slight breezes.

Before heading out, I made sure to pack all of the necessary beach essentials including sunscreen, towels, and water to stay hydrated. With the sun beating down, its important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

There was plenty to do from water activities, to building sandcastles, to simply relaxing and enjoying the gorgeous scenery. Overall, it was the perfect day full of fun and relaxation, but also an important reminder of the importance of being prepared and safe while enjoying the beach.

Enjoy a Seafood Extravaganza

Being a coastal town, expect a nice variety of delicious seafood options that are sourced from the Atlantic Ocean. Among the most popular foods found at local restaurants, visitors will find dishes like seafood boils, shrimp and grits, oysters that are prepared raw, steamed, or fried, and crab that is steamed, in a boil, or made into crab cakes.

Lobsters are not as plentiful, but you they are available at select restaurants. The clam chowder or seafood pastas will more than please your appetite. You’ll also enjoy a range of fish including flounder, grouper, snapper, and mahi-mahi. Grilled, blackened, or fried fish dishes are popular choices.

Witness Nature’s Masterpiece

Watching the sunset on Tybee Island is a blend of serenity and natural beauty that captivated us. We found some great spots to watch the sunset that gives a unique aspect of the island’s charm.

The Tybee Island Lighthouse provides an elevated vantage point that allows an unimpeded view of the sun as it descends into the horizon. The Back River Beach is another spot with tranquil shores that perfectly capturing the sun’s reflection on the waters.

For a quieter and more intimate scene, the North Beach has secluded spots to enjoy the sunset without disturbance. If you are planning a romanic scene, this would be an ideal place.

Or if you just want to make it memorable, you could plan a romantic sunset picnic. If you are with family, organize a photography excursion to capture images with nature as a beautiful backdrop.

Another way to see the sunset is on an afternoon boat tour, providing you not only with an unbeatable viewpoint but also the chance to witness local wildlife as they end their day.

At the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, meet wildlife by joining a trek in nature. Each walk has a different focus. The beach walk is a guided walk on Tybee’s South beach.

Make sure you are well dressed for the terrain. Don’t wear sandals, flip flops, or crocs. Some areas are muddy, especially in the marsh.

All of the walks are reasonably priced at $20 per adult. The center is located at 37 Meddin Dr Tybee Island, and it’s open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Experience the Eerie

On the southern part of the island, join the Tybee Ghost Tour ! You’ll meet your paranormal posse in the south beach neighborhood which bustles with restaurants, bars, and shops.

The tour makes eight stops thought the neighborhood. You’ll hear all about the history and hauntings in Tybee as you walk, then complete the tour at the beach while seeking apparitions. The tour lasts from 1.5 to 2 hours. The spookiness is light with a mix of entertainment.

Yes, the Island features some fine trails and bike paths for a safe and easy way to get a better view of the charming little town. 

Best of all, rent a beach cruiser online at Tybee Island Bike Rentals. They have super comfortable 3G bikes with large seats so that that makes the outing enjoyable. The rental includes a basket, lock, cup holder and helmet. They can deliver the bikes to you at designated meeting points.

Or go to a local bike rental shop at Fat Tire Bikes at 1403 Butler Avenue. Their bikes have large tires, so which makes the ride easy on a beach while enjoying the beautiful seaside view. 

Dive into Local Delights

Wouldn’t you love to spend the afternoon spotting dolphins in the glossy water of the Island? Take a dolphin tour and get close with the most friendly and curious creatures out there in island water. 

If you are visiting a Savannah, there is a five-hour dolphin tour that picks you up at the Savannah Visitor Center. From there, you’ll be transported by bus to a local restaurant to dine on seafood for a great lunch at The Crab Shack.

Then you’ll spend about 90 minutes in the afternoon with fellow nature lovers as you search for dolphins. The tour ends with a stop at the Tybee Island Lighthouse for terrific photos.

As temperatures increase, many travelers make the journey to their favorite East Coast beach towns to soak up the restorative, nostalgic nature that comes with salt water, sand, and good old-fashioned summer fun.

“East Coast beach towns have a certain distinct charm that you have to experience yourself to fully embrace,” says Katie Cosgrove, the director of sales and marketing at Ashore Resort & Beach Club in Ocean City, Maryland. “These towns tend to be more laid back, with an appeal for every type of traveler — whether it's families, beach week groups looking for nightlife, couples looking for a getaway, and everyone in between.” Plus, she adds, most of these destinations are relatively close to larger cities — like Savannah, Richmond, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City — which “makes for a quick and easy getaway for urban dwellers.”

Kennebunkport, Maine

According to Natalie Kurtzman , a travel advisor at Fora , you’ll want to head to Maine for “wide sandy beaches, amazing food (homemade blueberry pie and fresh lobster are a New England rite of passage), and charming towns.” While there are several beach towns to choose from, Kennebunkport is her top pick. She recommends starting your vacation by checking into Hidden Pond , where you can stay in cottages and bungalows, and then spending a day at Goose Rocks Beach. “A visit to the area requires a stop at Mabel’s Lobster Claw for — you guessed it — lobster and their award-winning blueberry pie,” she adds.

Newport, Rhode Island

“Newport is filled with amazing history and incredible food,” says Caroline Broome, founder and designer of Tillie , a Palm Beach-based fashion brand. While some beach towns veer toward cute and kitschy, Newport is all about the glamor; if you’ve watched The Gilded Age on HBO, you may remember the mansions, the cocktail parties, and all of the social drama between Manhattan’s elite as they enjoyed summers in Newport. Modern-day Newport still holds onto that level of glitz, with several luxury hotels welcoming travelers to the seaside destination. Broome recommends staying at the historic Castle Hill Inn , but there’s also The Chanler at Cliff Walk , The Brenton Hotel , and The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection . During your stay, be sure to check off all of the classic Newport activities: Go sailing, explore the 3.5-mile scenic Cliff Walk , and visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame .

Montauk, New York

As New Yorkers know, the train ride out to the very end of Long Island can be stressful (particularly if you’re joining the throngs of people leaving Manhattan on a Friday). Montauk, however, is worth the four-hour ride and ensuing hassle — and there are even pockets of quiet , if you know where to look. It’s a bit more rugged than some of the other towns in the Hamptons, and I find that to be a significant part of its appeal. There’s a rustic-meets-luxury charm to the town, which you’ll experience at Crow's Nest , a bohemian hotel with both rooms and cottages. Or, if you want to take it up a notch, spend a long weekend at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa , where 158 rooms and suites overlook the ocean. If it’s your first time out East, I also recommend visiting the Montauk Point Lighthouse, indulging in a lobster roll at Duryea's , and getting some dinner essentials at Gosman’s Fish Market .

Chatham, Massachusetts

“Chatham feels so nostalgic, with the evening bandstand concerts and the charm of Old Cape Cod,” says Kurtzman. “I spent time in Chatham as a child and have some of the fondest memories at Oyster Pond Beach and strolling Main Street.” If you’re traveling with a family or a larger group, you may want to opt for a quintessential Cape Cod beach cottage for your stay. But for those hoping for a more romantic or luxurious stay, she recommends Chatham Bars Inn : “The inn has one of the best spas in New England if you’re looking to sneak away for some quiet time. Plus, you can walk into town, which is such a highlight.” Between beach trips, bike rides, and popping into the t-shirt stores, galleries, and boutiques on Main Street, check out two of Kurtzman’s can’t-miss Chatham staples: local watering hole The Chatham Squire and Chatham Candy Manor .

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket has its own brand of island magic — one created by foggy weather, blooming hydrangeas, cobblestone streets, lobster rolls, and stunning oceanside homes. “There is so much to love [on the island], but a few of my favorites include dining at Cru , Lola 41 , and The Nautilus . For a special meal with gorgeous sunset views, go to Galley Beach . A visit to Cisco Brewers is a must — and this is well paired with grabbing picnic items for the beach at Bartlett’s Farm ,” says Kurtzman. The beach scene is also notable (her favorites are Surfside Beach and Jetties Beach), and there are several top-tier hotels to book for an extra-luxe getaway.  “To stay, I love the White Elephant for its location, great accommodations (especially great for families), and amazing service. I also love The Nantucket Hotel for the location and amazing kids programs,” she says.

Ocean City, Maryland

“Ocean City, Maryland is by far my favorite East Coast beach town. I grew up going to Ocean City with my family, and I couldn't be happier to now call this beach retreat home,” says Cosgrove. “I love that you can get a little bit of everything… easy beach access, family activities, great seafood, and vibrant nightlife.” Some beach towns may be sleepy, but Ocean City is the opposite; there are amusement parks ( Trimper Rides and Jolly Roger Amusement Park ), mini golf courses, playgrounds, piers, and plenty of dining options to keep you full and energized. “Aside from our new signature restaurant [at Ashore Resort & Beach Club], Tide Room , I'd recommend visitors also check out The Hobbit and Liquid Assets , which has a great wine selection. Plus the downtown boardwalk and Thrasher's famous french fries are not to be missed,” she says.

Duck, North Carolina

For families who “love a mix of adventure and relaxation,” Cosgrove recommends Duck, a beach town in the Outer Banks. With one of the best beaches in North Carolina , this is the type of town where you can really kick back and take it easy. If you prefer to spend your vacation days on the move, take a spin around the beach town on a bike (you can rent one from Duck Cycle ), head out on the water with Nor’ Banks Sailing & Watersports , or get your steps in while exploring the Duck Town Park and Boardwalk . And if you end up craving something sweet? Duck delivers. “One of my absolute favorite places to go is Duck Donuts ,” says Cosgrove, “They make incredible hot donuts made to order.”

Just a short drive from downtown Charleston, the 2.5-mile-long island is a local favorite, thanks to its proximity, easy beach access, and number of incredible restaurants — including The Obstinate Daughter , Sullivan’s Fish Camp , and Poe’s Tavern . “The homes here are swoon-worthy, and the beach is extra wide, making for incredible views and endless beach walks,” she adds. Pro tip: Rent a bike from Sealand Adventure Sports to explore both Sullivan’s Island and neighboring Isle of Palms. 

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

If you’ve traveled to Hilton Head Island even just once, you know it’s the kind of destination that feels like home the moment you arrive; it’s just that special. “Travelers will love Hilton Head's great long stretches of beaches and historic touches — it's also a really great beach town for those who love walking and biking,” says Cosgrove. An easy weekend trip from Savannah , this part of the Lowcountry boasts more than 12 miles of sandy beaches, 30 golf courses, and endless ways to spend a long, leisurely day. Watch the boats arrive at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina , learn about the island’s history from a Gullah Heritage Trail Tours guide, search out dolphins with Dolphin Discoveries Nature Tours , or pick up fresh seafood at Hilton Head Farmers Market .

St. Simons Island, Georgia

Broome, who got married on nearby Sea Island , names St. Simons Island one of the best East Coast beach towns — a title given due to its perennial appeal. “[I] love that this destination is a wonderful place to visit year-round. There is always something festive going on with activities for the whole family,” she says. In the summer, East Beach beckons; in the off-season, visitors can still enjoy the scenery on a bike ride along the St. Simons Island Trail System, pop by the St. Simons Light House Museum , or fill up on the famous pancakes at Palmer’s Village Cafe . During the holidays, a visit to The Cloister is paramount (although you’ll need to be a guest — or have a dining reservation — to get on Sea Island).

Tybee Island, Georgia

When the summer heat descends upon Savannah, locals flock to Tybee Island, where the wide beaches offer a reprieve from the humidity. It’s an extremely family-friendly destination that offers something for everyone. For the history buffs, there’s Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse; the adventure seekers can paddle out on the open water with Sea Kayak Georgia ; and nature lovers will appreciate the unparalleled access to wildlife with Captain Derek's Dolphin Adventures . Come mealtime, there’s no need to get dressed up. In true beach town form, Tybee Island is extremely casual — whether you’re dining at Breakfast Club (my personal favorite), The Crab Shack , or Salt Island Fish and Beer .

Palm Beach, Florida

East Coast beach towns come in all shapes and sizes, and Palm Beach, Florida is certainly one of the most glittery — and photogenic.  “Filled with endless style and abundant sunshine, Palm Beach is an oasis that feels a bit like stepping into a postcard,” says Broome. “With breezy palm trees, blooming flowers, and beautiful colors around every corner, the inspiration is endless.” The 18-mile-long barrier island is known for its high-end shopping along Worth Avenue, historic landmarks (the Flagler Museum ), and an impressive roster of hotels ; both The Breakers and The Brazilian Court Hotel are centrally located in town. Following a pool day or a ride on a beach cruiser, stop by Buccan Sandwich Shop for a quick lunch, followed by drinks at HMF or Florie’s at the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach .

The travel publication chose North Beach on Tybee Island for its grassy dunes and family-friendly vibe.

North Beach joins other stunning U.S. beaches on the list, from Poipu Beach in Hawaii to Oak Street Beach on Lake Michigan in Chicago.

Best Budget-Friendly Beach Towns To Visit On The East Coast

W hen you picture sun, sea, sand, and beach vacations, it might be California, or perhaps even Hawaii, which first comes to mind, but the beach towns of the East Coast have just as much to offer visitors as these other destinations. History, natural beauty, sandy shores, family fun, relaxation -- the Atlantic seaboard has it all. From Maine down to Florida, the states that make up the East Coast of the U.S. offer you a place where you can experience the variety of America's geography, landscape, and culture along its shores.

Whilst the best known and busiest of the East Coast beach resorts can be expensive spots for a vacation, there are still plenty of places that are perfect for the more cost-conscious traveler. From islands populated by wild ponies to bustling boardwalks, and from lighthouses perched on rocky promontories to wide stretches of white sand, these East Coast locations are all budget-friendly, and perfect for a beachside vacation that won't break the bank.

Tybee Island, Georgia

Just 18 miles to the east of downtown Savannah, idyllic Tybee Island is surrounded by five beautiful beaches with clear, warm waters. North Beach is the closest to Savannah and loved by locals looking to escape the city. Lying along the mouth of the Savannah River and opposite Tybee Lighthouse, it's surrounded by residential streets and marshy banks, making it the perfect place to get away from it all and relax on the sand.

The soft sands and gentle waves of South Beach, meanwhile, are popular with families and visitors looking for a more vibrant beach scene, thanks to its proximity to the pier and pavilion. Admission is free, and you can enjoy panoramic views across the coast here, or perhaps a sunset stroll. The pier plays host to a number of free events throughout the year, including fireworks and live music at the Labor Day Beach Bash every September. You can also catch a free family-friendly movie at Memorial Park during the summer months.

Tybee Island has miles of nature trails and wide paths to explore on foot or by bike -- great for spotting some of the 211 local species of birds or dolphins and turtles. Bike rental starts at $12 a day. Or, if you'd like to learn more about its wild inhabitants, you can visit the Tybee Island Marine Center (admission is $12 per person and under 4s are free).

Cocoa Beach, Florida

Cocoa Beach is about an hour's drive from Orlando, which makes it a great base for visiting both Florida's beaches and the parks and attractions, including Walt Disney World, on a budget, farther away from the most expensive accommodation options. Located on Florida's Space Coast, and only a few miles from the Kennedy Space Center, it's an exciting destination in its own right. Watch rocket launches for free from the oceanfront Alan Shepard Parkin downtown Cocoa Beach or from the historic Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier -- there's a $2 entry fee for the area above the water, although this is redeemable against food and drink purchased at one of the bars and restaurants there. You can also head north to Space View Park, which is even closer to the launch pads, free to visit, and includes information and exhibits about the history of the space journey.

Around Cocoa Beach, the beaches themselves are one of the main draws for a vacation: there are miles of wide stretches of white sand, wild dunes, boardwalks, and Atlantic surf to explore. The lush Lori Wilson Park beach has a public volleyball court, barbecue grills, and a playground -- and parking here is free. Alternatively, if you'd prefer to leave your car at your hotel or rental, you can hop on the new trolley for $1.50 a ride for adults, while kids under 5 ride for free.

North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Part of the beautiful stretch of South Carolina coastline nicknamed The Grand Strand, this town is only ten miles away from the more famous city of Myrtle Beach. Budget-friendly North Myrtle Beach gets less recognition -- and therefore fewer visitors -- even though it's still packed with things to do. This makes it a more laid-back choice, with uncrowded beaches and more affordable vacation rentals. It's also smaller and more compact so most of the sites and amenities are within walking distance of one another.

Children will love the games at Lulu's Beach Arcade, or heading over to McLean Park for the great free playground as well as spotting the turtles and big fish in the ponds,while grown-ups will love the tasting sessions at Duplin Winery -- $15 per person, including a free glass of wine and snacks. You can also explore The Grand Strand further at Heritage Shores Natural Park, a large oceanfront nature reserve with boardwalks, observation decks, and miles of walking paths. Admission is free all year round and you can easily while away a whole day hiking through the marshes and forests or kayaking around the saltwater creeks.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Once the vacation spot of choice for residents of nearby Washington, D.C., Rehoboth Beach is a charming town with a classic feel, old-fashioned stores, and a mile-long boardwalk. Travelers on a budget will love the free events held regularly at the Bandstand, operating since 1963. These include concerts, movies, and live performances. From May to September, the town also a Farmers' Market every Tuesday at Grove Park where you can sample the fresh local produce, without paying high restaurant prices. All the vendors are from the local area and parking is free around Grove Park during trading hours.

Away from the crowds of nearby Ocean City, and some of the other larger resorts in Delaware, the coast around Rehoboth Beach offers the chance to get back to nature. You can enjoy the beauty of maritime forests, dunes, and wetlands in nearby Cape Henlopen State Park; there's a $5 daily admission fee for in-state vehicles, or $10 for out of state visitors, but bike rental is free inside the park. You can also cycle, walk, swim, and picnic at Silver Lake, one of two natural freshwater lakes in the area, without spending a dime.

Amelia Island, Florida

Amelia Island is the perfect budget-friendly escape for history lovers. In addition to its miles of pristine beaches, this small, quirky, barrier island in northeastern Florida has a rich and varied history that features explorers, pirates, wealthy Victorians, and eight different flags. Downtown, you can take a self-guided tour of the Fernandina Historic District in order to view the interesting homes, churches, and commercial properties that date back over 400 years. These include Florida's oldest existing lighthouse, hotel (the Florida House Inn), and drinking establishment -- The Palace Saloon, where you can still quench your thirst today. Maps are available, free of charge, from the Visitor's Welcome Center in the Old Train Depot and there are information boards offering further insight that are dotted around the district, such as at the Fernandina Plaza Historic State Park.

At the north end of the island lies the Fort Clinch State Park: a vast area of hiking and nature trails, wide sandy beaches, and one of the best preserved 19th-century forts in the U.S. The entry fee is a wallet-friendly $6 for cars or $2 for bikes. But this is just one of the beaches you can explore here -- there are over 13 miles in total, all with the beautiful sand and warm waters that Florida is so famous for.

Pompano Beach, Florida

Pompano Beach is another budget-friendly gem in Florida. Located between Palm Beach and Miami, it has the same incredible beaches, vibrant community, and warm, clear Gulf Stream-adjacent waters as the two larger cities, but without the price tags to match. This bustling Gold Coast town boasts 52 parks and three miles of coastline -- plenty for even the most active vacationer to explore without spending a dime. There are tree-shaded playgrounds, picnic shelters, and a children's fountain for family-friendly fun. If you prefer evening entertainment, make sure to visit on a Friday: you can enjoy free concerts -- named Music Under the Stars -- on the second Friday of every month at the Pompano Beach Great Lawn or Old Town Untapped, a free monthly craft brew and arts festival, with live music and food trucks.

One of the most unique draws for visitors to Pompano Beach, however, is the natural reef system that lies just south of the pier and offers some of the best diving in North America.As it is only 350 yards off the shore, confident swimmers will be able to swim there to enjoy snorkeling or diving among the corals and marine life without incurring the cost of a boat ride.

Wareham, Massachusetts

If you're imagining beach vacations in Massachusetts, the chances are that you're picturing Cape Cod! Located on the west side of Bourne Bridge, before you cross the Cape Cod Canal, Wareham is the perfect option for a budget vacation in the area -- it has the same quaint houses, lovely beaches, and seafood shacks, but for a fraction of the price. This self-styled "Gateway to Cape Cod"  is a welcoming town that promises to be more than just a place to pass through, or a stop off during periods of heavy traffic. Pitch up at Maple Park RV Campsite from as little as $30.75 a night and enjoy the woodlands, swimming ponds, and cranberry bogs that Cape Cod is renowned for.

You can also visit historic Onset Village and the sandy beaches of Buzzards Bay. Families will love splashing in the warm, shallow waters of Onset Beach and hunting for shells, oysters or clams along the shorelines. It's also an ideal spot for kayaking: paddle along the bay or out to Wickets Island for an adventure. If you don't have your own, the Nemasket Kayak Center offers rentals right on the beach, with prices starting at a budget-friendly $60 per day. Inland, you can explore on two wheels along the paved canal bikeway and see the iconic Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge.

Assateague Island, Maryland

What could be a more exciting addition to a beach vacation than wild horses? Assateague Island, a remote barrier island that lies along the coast of both Maryland and Virginia, is one of only a handful of places in the U.S. where you can see horses in a natural habitat. Now home to two large herds that roam the maritime forests and beaches, the origins of these ponies are actually unknown -- some locals believe their ancestors arrived from a shipwreck off the coast of Virginia -- but, whatever their provenance, they have since been thriving on the island.

Only 10 miles south of Ocean City, Assateague Island is nevertheless a world away from its theme parks, high rises, and crowds. There are very few facilities on the island itself -- including grocery stores and restaurants-- so you need to be well prepared before you travel, but the peace and quiet are unparalleled once you arrive. What's more, the camping is cheap (prices start at $30 a night) and there is no permit required for fires, so it's easy to stick within a tight budget on your vacation with cookouts and picnics. There is an entrance fee to the island, but it is also reasonable: the vehicle price is $25 for 7 days, although there's no charge for visitors on foot or bike.

Madison, Connecticut

Packed with small-town charm, Madison has some of the best beaches along the Long Island Sound. Spread over two miles of sand and four beaches, it has the longest public shoreline park in Connecticut and is the perfect place to enjoy a host of classic beach activities without spending a dime: swimming, sunbathing, fishing, and strolling along the boardwalk at Hammonasset Beach State Park. During the summer months, you can camp right by the beach from as little as $20 a night and make the most of the views and unspoiled scenery for dawn to dusk on your vacation.

If you want to head into Madison, you can take the Shoreline Greenway Trail -- a mile-long walking and biking trail that runs from Hammonasset Beach State Park into downtown and provides easy access to the stores, eateries, and the town's other beaches. Here, you'll find budget-friendly B&Bs offering affordable alternatives to camping, as well as quaint bookstores and independent shops in the pedestrian-friendly downtown. It is also home to the renowned Sculpture Mile, a free exhibition of contemporary sculptures placed in and around Main Street. Free guided tours are available on Saturdays between April and November. For those more interested in the wildlife and ecology of the area, Megis Point Nature Center also offers free admission.

Cape May, New Jersey

Located at the southernmost point of New Jersey, the small town of Cape May has been a popular destination for beach vacations since the mid-18th century. This quintessential seaside resort is packed with charming Victorian homes and combines history with modern amenities and a long, sandy beach. There are multiple access points down onto the sand from the town -- which is small enough to get around on foot -- so you can pick the one closest to your accommodation and avoid any additional parking charges. The quietest spot in Cape May is Poverty Beach, a barrier spit of white sand and crystal clear waters at the far end of town -- a welcome break from the typical bustle of the Jersey Shore.

History lovers can also enjoy learning more about the town's interesting history during their stay without breaking the bank. You can take a free self-guided African-American Heritage Walking Tour of Cape May, organized by Center for Community Arts, using audio recordings on your cell phone. For a more in-depth study of the area, they also offer a guided Underground Railway Trolley Tour that tells the story of Cape May's importance in the slaves' escape and Harriet Tubman's work here. Tickets for this tour are $25 for adults and $15 for children.

Avon, North Carolina

More than 20 miles off the coast of mainland North Carolina, Avon is a haven of peace and solitude that takes you away from the crowds that beset many of the other beach towns on the Outer Banks during the peak season. Travelers on a budget can make the most of the free parking available at the beaches here and enjoy the miles of uncrowded, undeveloped shoreline without spending a dime. There are very few chain stores and restaurants (or even stop lights!) on Hatteras Island, which means that the eateries around Avon are mostly independent and affordable, such as the Orange Blossom Bakery & Cafe, which has been serving up "Apple Uglies" to the local community for over 40 years. The bakery's signature pastry, this huge, doughy apple fritter is around $5.

Like most of the Outer Banks, the beaches around Avon can get very windy, so they are popular spots for watersports, including surfing, kiteboarding, and kayaking. Some of the best views of the beaches, island, and surf are from the water, and you can travel south by ferry to Ocracoke Island and back for free. Make sure you arrive in plenty of time before the crossings, however, as they operate on a first-come, first-served, basis.

Bar Harbor, Maine

If you're looking for a dramatic destination for your beach vacation, this rocky stretch of coastline in Maine is just the spot. Rather than sunbathing and stretches of white sand, Bar Harbor is all about yachts, lobster boats, and panoramic views across the North Atlantic Ocean toward Mount Desert Island. This rustic East Coast beach town is situated at the foot of the mountains and lakes of Acadia National Park, making it the gateway to exploring the stunning vistas of the park as well the delights of the waterfront. You'll find inexpensive campsites both near to the shore and in the midst of the woodland, depending on your preference. Prices at the secluded KOA campsite, which is located at the gate of the Acadia National Park, start from $30 a day for a tent site.

Travelers visiting Bar Harbor on a budget can explore both the town and the national park for free via the Island Explorer shuttle bus, which includes a stop at the KOA campsite as part of its route. There are also a number of excellent eateries serving fresh seafood at an affordable price -- including the famous delicacy, the Maine Lobster. Head down to the Happy Clam Shack for some of the best prices for local lobster rolls in the area, followed by homemade blueberry pie for dessert.

Folly Beach, South Carolina

The laid-back town of Folly Beach is known for its warm, sunny climate -- and the good news for cost-conscious travelers is that it is more affordable than both the more famous Hilton Head Island that lies just down the coast and nearby Charleston. It makes a convenient base, however, for exploring both of these popular destinations, as well as providing all the sun, sea, and sand that you could want for a successful beach vacation. You can find free street parking just a few blocks outside of town or back from the coast, and Folly Beach is small enough for you to be able to walk everywhere comfortably, including down onto the beaches.

One of the best free attractions here is Morris Island Lighthouse; you an walk about a mile along the sand to see the waves lapping at its base. The area is also renowned for its wildlife spotting and there are lots of eco boat tours that promise dolphin sightings. However, these do tend to be pricey, so bringing your own kayak or small boat to explore the river ways and islands yourself is the perfect budget-friendly alternative. Another affordable option is the Charleston Water Taxi that sails out from the city's harbor and offers great views from the water, as well as the chance to spot some dolphins, for just $14 per adult for a day pass. Young children can ride for free.
