Volbeat’s Michael Poulsen on Servant of the Mind, Tour with Ghost, and Metallica’s Black Album

The Danish rockers are back with their eighth studio album

Volbeat’s Michael Poulsen on Servant of the Mind, Tour with Ghost, and Metallica’s Black Album

Danish rockers Volbeat are back with their eighth studio album, Servant of the Mind , just released via Republic Records. Musically, the album hearkens back to the band’s earlier, heavier days, with relentless riffing and punching rhythms, while also representing how far they’ve come as a group.

“You can definitely hear a band that sounds very young, but at the same time, a band that has a lot of experience with the style we started so many years ago,” frontman Michael Poulsen tells Heavy Consequence .

In addition to releasing the new album, Volbeat are prepping for a highly anticipated co-headlining US arena tour with Swedish metal masters Ghost. The outing kicks off January 25th in Reno, Nevada, and runs through a March 3rd show in Anaheim, California. Tickets are available now via Ticketmaster .

Ghost and Volbeat Announce Co-Headlining 2022 US Arena Tour

Poulsen sat down with Heavy Consequence for a conversation about the new album, Volbeat’s evolution as a band, the upcoming tour with Ghost, and the group’s involvement with Metallica’s Blacklist album. Read the interview below, followed by a full stream of the new album.

On Servant of the Mind being Volbeat’s eighth studio album and the band’s staying power

We’re very happy that we’re still here, going strong, perhaps stronger than ever, if you take away the pandemic. We were at our peak at the time the pandemic was raging, so we’re very satisfied with our career. The great thing is we still have the hunger and desire to continue making records. I think if you ask the Volbeat fans, I think they’ll also agree that our albums keep on being relevant. I’m pretty sure this new album will be another great chapter in the Volbeat history.

On how writing and recording Servant of the Mind was different from previous Volbeat albums

I don’t remember the last time we were so fast about everything. It was probably around the first two or three Volbeat albums when we didn’t use much time in the studio, because the budget wasn’t there, so we had to work with what was available. But, it’s not like budgets are an issue for us these days, but for some reason, I wrote the whole album in three months, and we ended up being in the studio for just two and a half weeks, and everything was done. I think it’s a combination of a lot of things, and it’s definitely that the material is a little bit more like it was back when we started playing. This album shows the heavy side of Volbeat a little bit more. The heavy stuff is in our DNA, and it’s something that’s easy for us to get back to. You have to feel it, and it has to come naturally.

On how Volbeat like to mix things up from album to album

We like to challenge ourselves for each album, so we don’t make the same record over and over again. There’s no point in that. This time around, after the lockdown it felt like starting all over again. How do we want the new Volbeat album to sound? It felt like the first Volbeat album coming out of lockdown, and I think the combination of us bringing back some of those heavy riffs from the beginning and the experience we have as songwriters and musicians comes through.

On being in a happy place when writing Servant of the Mind

I always feel like I’m in a happy place when I’m writing, and sometimes it’s okay to not be in a happy place, because material comes out of that, too. With this album, I think suddenly there was nothing else to do. We were not busy on the road and didn’t have to think about going back home and writing. The lockdown gave us nothing else to do, and I didn’t know what was going to happen when I picked up the guitar. I think after doing lots of interviews about how I started doing death metal and then started Volbeat — I think that inspired me to pick up the heavy stuff again, and it felt really fun.

Sometimes when you’re on album cycles, it feels like you already know your schedule ahead of everything. Like, now it’s time to start writing an album and go out on tour, whereas this was more spontaneous, because it came out of nowhere. I think the spontaneous side of the material is a little bit more loose and has a lot of inspiration. Of course, the pandemic is and was a really sad thing and very serious, and I totally understand that, too. I think we all got sad and were afraid of losing family members and friends and didn’t know what was going to happen. But, this record came out of that. It’s a record that we’re very proud of.

On the album’s first single, “Wait a Minute My Girl”

That song felt like one of those kinds of songs from the ’60s that has that Little Richard or Elvis Presley feeling with a little Ramones on top of it. It’s a pure rock ‘n’ roll song and a love song, and it felt right to release it early and during the summer. People needed some positive energy, and I think that track has a lot of positive energy. I know I’m smiling when I rehearse songs like that.

On playing the songs off Servant of the Mind live

Songs make so much more sense when you’re out on the stage and playing them for fans. It takes a lot of time before you become completely aware of the material, because certain songs just change over time. I know that I’m very proud of these albums, because I feel it’s such a strong combination of what we’ve done in the past, but we’re still bringing new elements into the music and our experience as songwriters, too. But for me to fully figure out how it feels is going to take some time. I know I’m very proud of it as a songwriter.

On Volbeat’s upcoming US tour with Ghost

I think it’s a very solid package. It’s great that two big Scandinavian bands can make such a strong package and go to America and play these big shows. I think it’s great that two Scandinavian bands can actually sell a lot of tickets together in America. We’re both very unique. We appreciate that the American audience has already bought so many tickets to those shows, so we’re very proud of the whole thing. We’re proud of the career that we have in America, and it really means something to the American music fans out there. I can’t wait. I think Ghost is a very interesting band and have a really bright future ahead of them.

On Volbeat’s cover of “Don’t Tread on Me” for The Metallica Blacklist compilation

We were kindly asked if we wanted to be part of the anniversary album, and we just went, of course. But, afterwards we were a little more skeptical, because it’s such an iconic album, and the band is so great and powerful, so we didn’t want to do it just for the sake of doing it. We are huge Metallica fans and good friends with the guys, and we have so much respect for them, so we wanted to pick a song that we could turn into our own song rather than do it like Metallica does it. So, we didn’t want to touch any of the hits, because I just want to hear Metallica play the hits. When we found “Don’t Tread on Me,” I said, this is the one. It’s a song we can turn into a Volbeat song while paying tribute to the Metallica version, and I think we got the blessing from James and Lars. They really like the version. But, the most important thing was the Metallica fans were really into it, because it’s not easy to cover people’s favorite band, but I think we got away with it.

On the influence of Metallica’s Black Album

At the time when the Black Album was released, I think everybody was surprised about the material, but at the same time, really blown away. Metallica has, since day one, been an amazing band and a great thrash metal band, and suddenly, they turned into this really heavy rock monster, but it’s also heavy because of the production of the album. Some Metallica fans didn’t know how to cope with it, but most of the world did, because it’s one of the best-selling albums of all time. They also proved and showed how strong of songwriters they were on it. It wasn’t all about being thrash-y and fast and heavy. It really shows a bright talent, and as you can see, there were a lot of metal fans trying to follow in their footsteps and trying to make their Black Album afterwards. But, you can’t just decide when to make your classic album or that big Black Album . It happened with a combination of a lot of things, from the timing of the record to Bob Rock’s production and his talent to push Metallica into those amazing musicians they are. I think they knew they had a hit record ahead of them, but I don’t think any of them knew it was going to be one of the biggest records of all time.

On what’s ahead for Volbeat

We have a lot of touring ahead. If the world allows us to tour everywhere, that’s what we’re going to do. Because the record is coming out now, it’s all about touring and getting back to what we used to do. I can’t wait.

Volbeat’s new album, Servant of the Mind , is available here , while tickets to their upcoming tour with Ghost can be picked up at this location . Stream the entire new album below.

About Ghost:

GRAMMY Award winning Swedish Rock band Ghost have elevated themselves to one of the most esteemed and celebrated rock bands in the world today. Three consecutive #1 Active Rock radio singles, debuting at #1 (Rock) + #3 (Top 200) on the Billboard album charts, accumulating well over a Billion streams, headlining arena tours (including sold out shows at The Forum LA + Barclays Center NYC), opening stadium shows for Metallica, and gracing magazine covers and television screens the world over are just part of their story. The band’s passionate fan base and critical praise also stems from their ability to constantly be pushing their creative boundaries. Their most recent album  Prequelle,  is loosely based on The Black Plague of 14th century Europe, a metaphor that sadly became a premonition that applies to the societal ills of our times.  Though the band’s music at times has dark lyrical content, it never loses it’s catchy Rock edge.  A nationwide US arena tour (Winter 2022) surely is only the start of what may be Ghost’s biggest year yet!

About Volbeat:

Since forming in 2001, Volbeat has gone from the clubs of Copenhagen to headlining stages around the world, including the famed Telia Parken stadium in Denmark (becoming the only domestic artist to ever sell out the venue). Over the course of seven record-breaking albums the band has picked up number one songs (including nine #1s on the US Mainstream Rock chart and counting, the most of any band based outside of North America), multi-platinum certifications, awards and accolades (including a Grammy nomination) all over the planet. Their latest album,  Rewind, Replay, Rebound , was released on August 2nd, 2019 and has spawned the hit singles “Last Day Under The Sun,” “Die To Live (feat. Neil Fallon)” and “Leviathan.” A live album featuring songs recorded during the subsequent world tour,  Rewind, Replay, Rebound: Live in Deutschland , was released digitally on November 27th, 2020. Most recently, the band shared a “double blast” of brand new songs for the Summer: “ Dagen Før (feat. Stine Bramsen)”  and “ Wait A Minute My Girl .” They also contributed a cover of “ Don’t Tread on Me ” to  The Metallica Blacklist ,  with all proceeds from the track benefiting the All Within My Hands Foundation and the Børne Cancer Fonden of Denmark.

This was my first Volbeat concert and I simply wished to hear some of my favorite songs. It turned out to be such a fantastic show it left me in awe long time after it ended.

I must say it was also the first concert that I went to where in my opinion the levels of sound of each instrument and vocals were configured perfectly. Each instrument was really being heard loud and clear. Suddenly at some point during the concert millions of confetti (white and red) were shot in the air and rained on people. Later on huge balloons were thrown toward audience and made an interesting effect bouncing all over the place. I should also mention the stage that seemed to be made of screens displaying animations adequate to the songs being played. All in all great experience. Would go see Volbeat again.

Great show overall. It was my first time in this location and my first time volbeat.

Danko Jones did a great job as opener. I have seen them before. I like them a lot because you can feel the enjoyment they have performing.

Baroness came second, and they sounded great. Haven't heard them before, so I didn't know what to expect. I liked thier style and sound, but they seemed a bit too 'slow' to really fit in this lineup. But great anyways!

Then there was Volbeat, and the crowd got insane. The sound was great, everybody - from the band, to the crowd - had a blast!

Thank you for this great evening :)

I am 48 years old & I've seen a lot of great bands put on some really great shows. I love all types of music from M.Haggard to Pantara even some of the older Rap but Volbeat is by far the best live show I have EVER SEEN. They became my favorite band about 3 years ago & I've seen them live twice so far and will see them every chance I get. My wife hates metal but after going with me to see Volbeat my second time in OKC she absolutely fell in love with their music & Michael Poulsen. We are both die hard VOLBEAT FANS FOR LIFE!!! Can't wait to see them again. Really hopeing to get to meet the guys next time. Volbeat are a must see if you haven't already.

VOLBEAT To Work On New Studio Album In 2024; No Touring Planned Next Year

Danish rock and rollers VOLBEAT will spend all of 2024 working on material for the band's next studio album.

VOLBEAT frontman Michael Poulsen outlined the band's plans for the follow-up to 2021's "Servant Of The Mind" in a video message uploaded earlier today (Thursday, August 24) on VOLBEAT 's social media.

He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "Hello VOLBEAT listeners and VOLBEAT fans out there. We are home from the U.S. [and] Canada tour. And from everybody in VOLBEAT , I wanna say thank you so much for the amazing support in Canada and U.S. and all the people who've been traveling to see VOLBEAT . We had a great time with HALESTORM , and can't wait to come back.

"So what's up next? Now we're home. We are gonna use some time on family, our kids, and we're not gonna tour next year, but we are gonna write a new album and go into the studio to record the album. So next time we are on the road, it'll be with a bunch of new songs. Can't wait. A lot of great ideas for the next record. So we will get started working on that.

"What else? Yeah. You know, since VOLBEAT is not touring next year, I will be on the road with [my death metal side project] ASINHELL . Check 'em out.

"And, again, thank you for your amazing support. You rock."

In a recent interview with Sonic Perspectives collaborator Rodrigo Altaf , Poulsen spoke about VOLBEAT 's recent split with longtime guitarist Rob Caggiano . Rob 's replacement for VOLBEAT 's current tour is Flemming C. Lund of the Danish extreme metal outfit THE ARCANE ORDER . Michael said: "There's a statement on the net [about the split with Rob ], and I can't go into too much details. But the thing was, three weeks before a tour, we suddenly became a three-piece. And, of course, for us, [we initially thought], 'Let's just go out as a three-piece. This is the situation we are in now.' But at the end of the day, when we were sitting down and I was about to do the setlist, of course we became a little bit handicapped. So, there was different options to who we were going to give a call to help us out, but since I already worked with Flemming and I knew Flemming , I gave him a call, even though he said, 'I have no idea how VOLBEAT sounds like.' [ Laughs ] He's only into death metal. So he said, 'I just have to listen to a lot of VOLBEAT records, I guess.' Of course he knew VOLBEAT — everybody knows VOLBEAT in Denmark — but he was not listening to VOLBEAT . So he said, 'Give me a few days just to actually figure out what you guys are playing,' beside the stuff that you hear on the radio. And he took up the challenge, and we made an agreement and he's helping out VOLBEAT for this year."

VOLBEAT played its first concert with Lund on June 10 at the Rockfest festival in Hyvinkää, Finland.

Just five days earlier, VOLBEAT announced that it had officially parted ways with Caggiano . No reason was given for the split, but the remaining bandmembers said that they wished their "brother Rob all the best with everything he does in the future." They went on to thank Rob "for ten amazing years."

A day later, Lund commented on his decision to accept the offer to play with VOLBEAT on the band's 2023 shows, saying in a statement: "The cat's out of the bag! Sometimes unexpected things happen in life and this must be said to be one of them: I can now finally reveal that I will be playing stand-in in VOLBEAT for Rob Caggiano on lead guitar on VOLBEAT 's upcoming summer tour. This means I'm playing all upcoming European festival shows in Finland, Norway, Sweden (warming up for METALLICA ),Switzerland, Germany and Austria as well as the US/Canada tour in July and August.

"When I was asked by Michael Poulsen not many weeks ago if I wanted to help them, I was honestly at first very overwhelmed by the request and found it very difficult to see myself in that role. But after a little time to think and talk with those closest to me, it dawned on me that it was something I could not possibly say no to.

"So this summer takes a somewhat unexpected, but obviously insanely cool turn. I will try to enjoy every moment and just take in the many experiences and impressions that will surely be an experience of a lifetime.

"A big thank you must go to my fantastic workplace MCB for the great flexibility so that it could be successful, and not least to my better half Julie who, as usual, supported and stood behind me!"

THE ARCANE ORDER is a Danish extreme metal quintet which released its fourth album, "Distortions From Cosmogony" , on June 9 via Black Lion Records .

Caggiano played on VOLBEAT 's last four studio albums: 2013's "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" , 2016's "Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie" , 2019's "Rewind, Replay, Rebound" and "Servant Of The Mind" .

An acclaimed musician, songwriter and producer, Caggiano joined ANTHRAX as lead guitarist in 2001, appearing on 2003 album "We've Come For You All" and 2004's "The Greater Of Two Evils" . He was onstage with the band during the famous 2010-2011 "Big Four" tour alongside SLAYER , MEGADETH and METALLICA , and he played on and produced ANTHRAX 's 2011 critically acclaimed album "Worship Music" .

Over the years, Caggiano has also garnered five Grammy nominations as a record producer/guitarist and has worked with a very wide range of artists including CRADLE OF FILTH , ANTHRAX , VOLBEAT , THE DAMNED THINGS , H20 , Jesse Malin and even Bruce Springsteen .

When Caggiano was enlisted as producer for VOLBEAT in early 2013, the collaboration was so phenomenally successful that he was quickly invited to join the band as well. The resulting album, "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" , achieved major chart success on both sides of the Atlantic, as did "Seal The Deal & Let's Boogie" .
