Bruce Springsteen – ‘Birmingham, Villa Park’ live review & setlist

James Daykin

The law of Rock ‘n’ Roll is one of diminishing returns with age. The Rolling Stones, Kiss, Bon Jovi and Aerosmith are all touring bands with singers who are not really able to hit the heights of their previous 70s and 80s glories and bands whose studio output is way past their best. Not Bruce Springsteen. At 73 years old his live shows are still a thing of legend and his last original studio album, ‘Letter To You’ contained all the hallmarks of everything Springsteen fans have come to expect from him over the past 50 years.

Walking on stage at around 7.15pm on a sunny, hot night in Birmingham, UK, Springsteen and the E Street Band launched into ‘Born in the USA’ deep-cut fan-favourite “No Surrender.’ He left around 10.15pm after bringing a sizeable chunk of this football stadium crowd to tears with the emotional, heartfelt ‘I’ll See You in My Dreams’ which he played solo on an acoustic guitar, serving as a kind of soft goodbye to his fans should circumstance mean we never get to see this iconic, authentic artist again.

In-between those two songs, Springsteen rocked this soulless football ground in the only way he can. A see of arms greeted almost every song and multiple cries of ‘Bruuuuuuuuuuuuce’ resounded around the stands as song after song came in fiery blasts and heartfelt hammer-blows. The elephant in the room, when you are playing a stadium show in the middle of June in the UK, is that it is going to be light until at least 9.30pm so performers can’t rely on lights, bells and whistles to augment their songs but Springsteen is one of a rare breed of artists that don’t need that, as was proven by the seven song encore which was largely played under the full glare of the stadium lights and little else.

Early songs, like ‘Ghosts’ and ‘Prove it All Night’ had to stand or fall on the strength of Springsteen’s performance alone and, by god, he nailed it. The church of Rock ‘n’ Roll is still alive and well in the hands of this unique artist. ‘Out in the Street’ saw him prowling the front rows like a man possessed, imploring the crowd to join him on this musical journey. The way Springsteen connects with his fans, from the hard core fan right down at the front who had been queueing at the venue since midday, to the bloke in the top corner of the Holte End stand who only came because he is an Aston Villa supporter who bought ‘Born in the USA’ on cassette back in the 80’s out for a good time on a Friday night, is amazing and something I’ve rarely seen in all my 30+ years of concert going.

When you go and see a band like Bon Jovi the setlist is often pitched to please the casual fan. I’ve read numerous interviews with Jon Bon Jovi over the years in which he states his job is to please the person attending their first Bon Jovi gig. For any artist with a sizeable back catalogue, this is a crime, ignoring the hard core fans that got you to where you are now. Springsteen refuses to do that, so “Candy’s Room’ and the seven minute Jazz-Rock epic, ‘Kitty’s Back’ were played for the long time fans leaving a good portion of the crowd a little confused as to what they were listening too although the power of the individual performances on display were fascinating to watch even if you hadn’t heard those particular songs before. Similarly, songs like ‘Last Man Standing’, which was beautifully introduced by The Boss with a touching speech about him being the last man alive from his original band that he joined back in school in 1965, and ‘Wrecking Ball’, a gaelic-tinged romp from the 2012 album of the same name, might have been unfamiliar to some but were performed with such style and verve that it didn’t really matter whether this was the first or the four hundredth time you’ve heard them.

Springsteen’s iconic ‘Born in the USA’ album was well served in Birmingham with six songs being pulled from it. Another highlight was the tour debut of ‘The River’, delivered beautifully, as always. ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze Out’ is also an emotional cornerstone of the set these days since the passing of E Street legends Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici. Images of them were broadcast on the video screens, serving as a wonderful tribute to their time, impact and talent. They say time is a cruel mistress and the older Springsteen has got the more it has crept, naturally, into his writing. Both ‘Last Man Standing’ and ‘Ill See You in My Dreams’ deal with loss explicitly but a large portion of this show hints towards goodbyes, gratitude and gratefulness with Springsteen, always front and centre. The conductor of a Rock ‘n’ Roll orchestra, old father time himself, content with his life’s work but still cradling the burning flame of creative passion deep inside, as was proved by his recent outstanding stint on Broadway and the ‘Only the Strong Survive’ covers album.

At 73, Bruce Springsteen has lost none of the fire or the passion that he had in 1983 and neither has his fans. This show in Birmingham was a triumph: an inclusive stadium gathering for hard core fans and casuals alike, all gathered to worship at the altar of the high priest of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Three hours of the finest showmanship and skilled, musical talent that has gone unrivalled now for nearly 50 years. Times change, fads come and go and even Springsteen himself has gone through multiple eras (to borrow a term and a mindset from Taylor Swift) but through it all the flame endures.

The US star has finally arrived to screams from fans

Our reporter Kirsty Bosley writes: "Bruce is here! He came out to wild screams from his fans and deep chants of BRUUUCCEEEE.

"The size of his E Street Band made for a big build up as they spilled on to the stage and he screamed into the mic before launching into No Surrender."

The American artist was due to kick off his show at 7pm but as of yet there's been no sight of him.

Traffic around Villa Park is 'insane'

There are traffic issues being reported around the Villa Park area.

Twitter user @ReissOmari wrote: "This week has really proved that Villa Park is NOT prepared for concerts, because the traffic around Aston and Perry Barr is insane, the buses aren’t moving, the trains are screwed. Not a good look for people coming to the city."

Villa Park 'starting to fill up'

Our reporter Kirsty Bosley, who is at Villa Park, writes: "Villa Park is starting to fill up and we're waiting for the 7pm start. Can't help but feel that this time, between the 4pm doors and now, could have been filled with a support act.

"The amount of street food vendors here mean people are sitting around eating and drinking beers in the sun, like a festival, and while that's lovely, we are dying for some live music! I'm not asking for "very special guests" (though some would be, for the price of these tickets!) but this would have been an amazing opportunity for an up-and-coming band to get in front of a new audience."

Bruce Springsteen superfan travels from New Zealand to see his idol at Villa Park

A Bruce Springsteen superfan has travelled more than 11,000 miles from New Zealand to watch his idol perform at Villa Park tonight, Friday, June 16. Brad Gould, pictured in the blue and grey shirt, has been to see The Boss eight times in his life.

Important travel information when leaving Villa Park

bruce springsteen tour 2023 tickets villa park

After the 11pm curfew tonight, there are only a handful of trains running to Birmingham New Street and Walsall. The last train from Witton to Birmingham New Street is at 23.56pm whilst the last train from Witton to Walsall is at 23.34pm.

However, there is a later train at nearby Aston train station. People can catch the 00:02am train to Birmingham New Street if you miss the last train from Witton. The last bus from Aston Six Ways (NX 7) is scheduled for 23.56, which will terminate at Birmingham Snow Hill.

What a view

Graham Harris has sent in this stunning picture of Villa Park this afternoon now that the doors have officially opened. Diehard fans can be seen already making their way to the front whilst some people are just enjoying a stroll around the stadium.

Bruce isn't scheduled to be on until 7pm, and it will only get busier in Birmingham as the day progresses. As always, stay tuned to our live blog for the latest information on the concert.

The Bruce Springsteen hot dog

bruce springsteen tour 2023 tickets villa park

After cooking pink pizzas for Pink fans earlier in the week, Calabbria have done something special for The Boss. Callum Maisey from Kidderminster runs the streetfood stand and has made The Boss Dog.

Containing cheese, chillies, bacon bits, onion, mustard and ketchup, The Boss hot dog costs £10. Elsewhere, other prices at Villa Park include £12 for a cheeseburger at Flying Cows.

All we need now is a Bruce-themed drink at Villa Park to wash down after The Boss dog!

The latest from Villa Park

bruce springsteen tour 2023 tickets villa park

With doors set to open any minute now, our reporter Kirsty is outside the stadium and gave some insight into the atmosphere so far. Needless to say, everyone seems chilled and rather relaxed on a sunny Friday afternoon.

She said: "Fans queueing at gate B1 are sitting under beautiful trees on Trinity Road and enjoying the merciful breeze as they wait for gates to open at 4pm. The weather is perfect, the atmosphere is friendly and, fortunately, the queues to get in are short!

"The Villa are taking care of the die-hard fans that showed up early to be among the first in. They're handing out bottles of water to make sure everyone's hydrated and in good voice for tonight's singalongs!"

Meet the Bruce Springsteen superfans

bruce springsteen tour 2023 tickets villa park

With doors set to open shortly, our reporter Kirsty Bosley has been at the heart of the action and speaking to the front of the queue. Right at the front of the queue is Pam from Cheltenham who is wearing her favourite Springsteen shirt this afternoon.

Behind Pam is superfan Ashley King, who can be seen in the picture above raising his hat, perhaps as a tribute to Bruce? Ashley is originally from Northfield and was at the Boss' last Villa Park show in 1989.

Ashley has come a little bit further than B31 to see one of his favourites, he's travelled from Belgium, where he now resides. It won't be long before Ashley is reunited with Bruce after tonight, he's heading to Brussels in two days to see him perform at Werchter Festivalpark.

A view from Villa Park

bruce springsteen tour 2023 tickets villa park

Our reporter Kirsty has already arrived outside Villa Park ahead of the doors opening at 4pm. Although it's a rather sunny day in Birmingham, cloud cover is ensuring that fans queing outside Gate A are in relative comfort.

Full list of road closures

As we previously touched upon, driving is not advised for tonight's show, especially with a high number of road closures. We've listed the full list of roads closed for tonight's show below.

Roads affected by traffic restrictions and closures:

Witton Road

Witton Lane

Trinity Road

Grosvenor Road

Priory Road

Aston Hall Road

Station Road

How to get to Villa Park

The recommended option for tonight's show is to use public transport. Due to Villa Park being in a residental area, there is no parking around the stadium.

There will be a Traffic Exclusion Zone outside the stadium tonight which means that taking the train might be the most suitable. The closest train station is Witton, a five minute walk from the stadium.

You can get to Witton from Birmingham New Street, the average journey time is estimated at 23 minutes long. Alternatively, park and ride options include Tame Bridge Parkway, which is near to Walsall and West Bromwich.

Support acts

Despite being hours away, little is known about any support acts for tonight's show. Doors open at 4pm and Bruce is set to take Villa Park by storm at 7pm.

With a three-hour window, it would be expected to have some entertainment in Aston before the sun starts to settle. Singer Frank Turner and country band The Chicks have been confirmed as support acts for Bruce's show next month in London, although it is unknown if we will see them tonight.

The Springsteen setlist

Wondering what the American musician might have up his sleeve? We've looked at a recent setlist from June 13 in Zurich, Switzerland, which gives an indication to what we can expect.

Here is the setlist in order. See if you can spot any favourites from the list below:

What are the stage times?

You can always gurantee that you will get your money's worth in a Bruce Springsteen show. And tonight is set to be no different.

Bruce is scheduled to perform from 7pm, but the curfew for the event is 11pm, meaning that fans could be in for a four-hour set. If you want to get your seat early, doors open at the stadium from 4pm.

After making a surprise appearance at Glastonbury last year, we wonder what surprises are in store for us tonight?

Ticket information

If you haven't already got a ticket to tonight's blockbuster show, tickets are being advertised on ticket exchange website Viagogo. However, they aren't cheap.

Standing tickets start at £280 whilst some prices for seated seats go up to £354. Tickets are no longer available on Ticketmaster due to the event being less than 24 hours away.

The Boss is in Birmingham...

Hello and welcome to our BirminghamLive live blog of Bruce Springsteen's headline show at Villa Park. We are more than excited to see another musical legend greet Villa Park after Pink's show earlier this week.

Before the action and drama, we're staying on track to keep you up to date with all the essential information. Stay tuned for road closures, set list times, ticket information, pics and more as we await the return of Bruce Springsteen.

Whether you've been a fan for decades, or have recently discovered the American singer, Bruce will not be coming alone. His trusted E Street Band will be on point to keep everyone rocking into the night on what is a show to remember.

For fans of the television show The Sopranos, Bruce will be joined in Brum by his trusted guitarist Steven Van Zandt, who played Silvio Dante on the show. And Bruce won't be in the UK much longer.

After his show tonight, Bruce is heading to Werchter, Belgium on Sunday (June 18) and Dusseldorf, Germany (June 21). He might be born in the USA, but tonight, he'll feel like an adopted Brummie with a racauous crowd expected in the Second City.

Bruce Springsteen in Ireland FAQ: Tickets, setlist, gig times... all you need to know

Where and when are Bruce Springsteen's Irish gigs?

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band will kick off the Irish leg of their world tour at Boucher Fields in Belfast on Thursday, May 9.

This gig will be followed by Nowlan Park in Kilkenny on Sunday, May 12 and Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Thursday, May 16 before heading east to Dublin Croke Park’s on Sunday, May 19.

Are there any tickets left?

Tickets for the Cork gig have sold out and fans have been warned about the possibility of scams with organisers reminding the public that Ticketmaster is the only official  ticket seller for the event.

For any questions about your tickets, you can contact Ticketmaster via the My Account help section on their website.

What will Springsteen play?

The rock star changes up his set lists, but fans can expect to hear the hits. A recent gig in Ohio saw songs such as ‘Lonesome Day’, ‘No Surrender’, ‘Letter to You’, ‘Born to Run’’ and Dancing in the Dark’, as well as a new addition in the form of ‘Youngstown’, which was played live for the first time since 2017.

In Cardiff recently, Springsteen played five songs from Born In The USA and five from Born to Run, with the rest of the set drawn from eight other albums. He also performed three cover versions - Because the Night (Patti Smith), Nightshift (Commodores), Twist and Shout (The Top Notes).

After a hit-laden encore, concerts on the tour have featured The Boss returning to the stage to perform a solo acoustic version of ‘I'll See You in My Dreams’, from 2019’s Letter to You album.

How long will Springsteen be on stage?

The concerts are expected to start soon after 7pm and be finished by 10.30pm. Bruce and the E Street band are known to play for three hours.

Is there a support act?

As is the case with most Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band gigs, there will be no support act.

Who’s in the band?

It’s very much the lineup who came to Cork in 2013 with Springsteen: Garry Tallent, Roy Bittan, Max Weinberg, Steven Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and Patti Scialfa; supplemented by longstanding associates Soozie Tyrell, Charles Giordano, and Jake Clemons (nephew of Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist who died in 2011).

What time do I need to be there?

Since there is no support act, Springsteen and co will be on stage from 7pm. Those attending the Páirc Uí Chaoimh gig are asked to arrive at the venue at 5pm and ensure they are in their seats or in position on the pitch by 7pm, depending on whether they are standing or sitting.

The stadium is open at 5pm so queuing earlier in the day is not permitted.

Can I bring a printout of my ticket?

No. You must download your ticket from your Ticketmaster account and save them to your iPhone wallet or Google Pay account. It’s important to note that screenshots and printouts of digital tickets will not be accepted so download your ticket ahead of time and be sure to have your phone fully charged and ready to present at the gate.

How do I get there?

Fans for all the concerts are asked to plan their journey ahead of time. For those heading to the Cork gig, your ticket should tell you which route to enter the stadium at: yellow, red or blue.

The yellow route will bring you along Centre Park Road for the pitch and North Stand access while the red route is on Monahan Road and is specifically for South Stand access.

The blue route is also located on Monahan Road and will provide access for the pitch and South Stand.

There will be no shuttle buses or parking at the stadium. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by foot where possible and to utilise public transport links.

According to gardaí, traffic will be “very limited” in the areas of Centre Park Road, the Marina, Maryville and the Monahan Road and there will be traffic management plan in place for the evening.

Organisers do not expect the current construction works outside the stadium to have much impact on the day but have asked concertgoers to be aware that work is ongoing.

What can I not bring?

Concert-goers are asked to leave bags at home where possible. If you need to bring a bag, it must be no larger than A4 size. Any bags bigger than this will not be permitted and there will be no storage facilities at the venue. Umbrellas will also not be allowed into the venue so be sure to bring a poncho or rain jacket if there is rain.

Anything else I should know?

About 40,000 people will attend the Cork gig and it is expected that many will be planning to see Bruce elsewhere in the country too. With that in mind, organisers have asked fans to double check the date and venue on their tickets in order to avoid arriving at the wrong location or on the wrong date.

It’s also important to note that under 14s are not allowed to enter the standing/pitch area and must be accompanied by an adult elsewhere.

Held at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona last night, the show marked the first of Springsteen’s comeback shows with the E Street Band after having to postpone a hefty chunk of shows in 2023 due to health concerns .

The worries arose towards the end of last year, when the singer-songwriter needed to be treated for peptic ulcer disease , and was forced to delay all of his shows after playing in New Jersey on September 3.

He went on to make a number of guest appearances at various events – including joining John Mellencamp for a surprise duet on March 10, and taking part in the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year gala honouring Jon Bon Jovi on February 2.

Ahead of the new show, Springsteen teased fans with a post online, saying that the new run of live shows would see him return stronger than ever. “Greeting freaks, fans and friends in Phoenix, Arizona,” he said in the clip. “I am coming to see you on Tuesday night. And I want you to ready, be prepared, be afraid, because we are going to rock you into the ground. See you then.”

Now, on the opening night of his 2024 shows, The Boss has kicked off the tour with a huge 29-song setlist which features all his fan favourites, as well as a number of covers.

To open the show, Springsteen started by performing his 2002 track ‘Lonesome Day’ – taken from his album ‘The Rising’. From there, he launched into renditions of ‘Night’, ‘No Surrender’, ‘Two Hearts’ and ‘Darlington County’.

The set saw him incorporate tracks from across his extensive discography, ranging from songs from his first album, ‘Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.’, through 2022’s ‘Only the Strong Survive’.

Covers on the night included a spin on Ben E. King’s ‘Don’t Play That Song (You Lied)’, ‘Nightshift’ by the Commodores, ‘Because The Night’, which appeared on the Patti Smith Group album ‘Easter’, and ‘Twist and Shout’ by The Top Notes.

The latter appeared during the encore, alongside ‘Born To Run’, ‘Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)’, ‘Glory Days’, ‘Dancing in the Dark’, ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out’ and an acoustic performance of ‘I’ll See You in My Dreams’.

Check out fan footage of the show below, as well as the full setlist.
