Are There Luggage Size Restrictions On Princess Cruise?

Suitcases and cruise ship at pier

Generally speaking, there are no size luggage size restrictions when you join a Princess Cruise. The only restrictions Princess Cruise imposes on their luggage is the weight. All bags should not exceed 50 lbs prior to embarkation .

However, this actually depends on what kind of cruise you will be joining. If your cruise includes a land portion, it is highly suggested that you use smaller, easy-to-move luggage to avoid the hassle during transfers.

If you are thinking about bringing a large suitcase during your cruise, keep in mind the size of the stateroom that you have booked. Most staterooms are not big and can comfortably fit about one or two suitcases at best, so make sure to choose your luggage properly.

Depending on where you will be coming from to join your cruise, you might need to take a plane to get to the cruise start point. With this in mind, it is best to follow the size and weight restrictions that airlines impose on luggage.

What Should You Pack For A Cruise?

Clothes in pile on top of bag

Cruises have different activities that you can do aboard the ship, as well as other things you'll be able to do when you disembark on land. Depending on the type of cruise that you will be joining, packing for a cruise can be slightly different for each traveler.

The Princess Cruise has many different activities ranging from fun, casual activities to more formal nights out in restaurants. Make sure to pack for a Princess Cruise just like you would pack for any stylish land-based resort.

Casual sportswear is highly suggested to keep yourself comfortable during day-to-day outdoor activities. Jackets or all-weather coats are great to use at night because of the cooler weather.

Some dining venues aboard the Princess Cruise will require you to wear smart casual and formal attire. Make sure to pack those nice dresses and a suit or two for these nights. Don't forget your dress shoes and heels to complete the look.

If your cruise has a land portion wherein you have to disembark for land tours, keep in mind that you should pack lightly for this part of the trip. Since you will be bringing the luggage with you on land, just pack the clothing essentials you will need for that particular place.

When packing for a cruise, you should also have a bag that contains all of the essentials that you will need while onboard the ship. This bag should contain your travel documents, medication, and valuables.

Always remember that packing for a cruise should be simple. If you are in need of other items, you will most likely be able to purchase them in the shops. You can also rent clothing should you wish to join formal nights and you've forgotten to bring your own suit.

Final Thoughts

Going on a vacation on a cruise ship is fun because you'll get to see amazing places while aboard a fantastic ship. Secure your belongings by printing your own luggage tags before embarkation

Understanding the Importance of Luggage Tags

Luggage tags play a crucial role in ensuring that your belongings reach the correct destination throughout your Princess Cruise. By attaching these tags to your suitcases, you provide essential information that allows the cruise staff to handle and deliver your bags efficiently.

Here are a few key reasons why luggage tags are essential for your cruise:

  • Identification: Luggage tags help identify your bags among the thousands of others on board. They typically include your name, contact information, and stateroom number, making it easier for staff to locate and deliver your luggage.
  • Organization: By using luggage tags, you can keep your belongings properly organized. The tags provide a clear designation of your stateroom, ensuring that your bags are delivered to the correct location and reducing the risk of confusion or misplaced luggage.
  • Security: Luggage tags can help enhance the security of your belongings during transfers and disembarkation at different ports of call. With your contact information clearly displayed on the tag, it becomes easier to locate your bags if they are accidentally misplaced or lost.
  • Efficiency: Properly labeled luggage tags enable the cruise staff to handle your bags more efficiently, reducing the time it takes for your suitcases to reach your stateroom. This allows you to start enjoying your cruise experience without unnecessary delays.

It is important to note that Princess Cruise offers designated tags with a specific design that makes them easily recognizable by the cruise staff. These official tags also come with a barcode that helps track and manage luggage throughout the journey.

Option 2: Obtaining Luggage Tags at the Cruise Terminal

If you prefer a more immediate approach and prefer to collect your luggage tags in person, you have the option of obtaining them at the cruise terminal upon your arrival. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Upon arrival at the cruise terminal, look out for designated areas where luggage tags are distributed. These areas are usually easily accessible and well signposted to assist passengers.
  • Locate a representative or staff member stationed specifically for distributing luggage tags. They are there to assist and ensure that you receive the appropriate tags for your cruise.
  • Provide the necessary information to the staff member, such as your name, stateroom number, and any other details required to fill out the tags accurately.
  • Once you receive your luggage tags, it is essential to fill them out correctly before attaching them securely to your bags. Ensure that all the required information is legible and visible to facilitate smooth luggage handling.
  • Remember to follow any specific instructions or guidelines provided by the staff at the terminal regarding the use of the tags. They may have additional information or recommendations to make the process more efficient.

Obtaining luggage tags at the cruise terminal offers the advantage of personal interaction and immediate accessibility. You can ask any questions or seek clarification on the proper use of the tags directly from the staff members present.

It is important to note that the availability of luggage tags at the cruise terminal may vary depending on the cruise line and specific embarkation procedures. Some cruise lines may only provide tags upon request or during designated hours. To ensure a seamless experience, it is advisable to check the cruise line’s official website or contact their customer service prior to your departure.

Now that you know how to obtain luggage tags at the cruise terminal, let’s explore an alternative option for those who prefer a personalized touch.

Option 3: Designing and Printing Your Own Luggage Tags

If you have a creative streak and prefer a personalized touch for your luggage tags, designing and printing your own tags can be a fun and unique option. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Start by gathering the necessary materials such as cardstock or heavy-duty paper, a printer, adhesive laminating sheets, and a hole punch.
  • Choose a design template or create your own using graphic design software or online templates. Ensure that the design includes essential information such as your name, contact details, and stateroom number.
  • Once you have the design ready, print it out using a high-quality printer. Make sure to print multiple copies in case of mistakes or need for extra tags.
  • Cut out the printed tags along the outline. Consider using a ruler and precision cutting tools for clean and professional-looking edges.
  • Next, protect the printed tags by adhering each one to an adhesive laminating sheet. This will make them more durable and resistant to water damage during your cruise.
  • After laminating, use a hole punch to create a hole at the top of each tag. This is where you will thread a secure strap or string to attach the tag to your luggage.
  • Once the tags are prepared, fill out the necessary information on each one, making sure it is clear and legible.
  • Finally, attach the custom-made luggage tags to your bags securely using a sturdy strap or string.

Designing and printing your own luggage tags allows you to personalize every aspect according to your preferences. You can incorporate your favorite colors, fonts, or even add unique design elements that reflect your personality.

However, it is crucial to ensure that the tags you design meet the size and information requirements set by the cruise line. Double-check the guidelines provided by the cruise line to ensure that your custom tags comply with their standards.

This option gives you the freedom to be creative and adds a personal touch to your luggage. Just remember to create your tags well in advance of your departure to allow for any adjustments and printing time.

Now that you know how to design and print your own luggage tags, let’s explore some tips for using them effectively.

What Is The Weight Limit For Luggage On A Princess Cruise?

This is a question that we get a lot, and it can be confusing because there are a lot of different numbers out there depending on which source you consult. So, we did some research and here is what we found.

The weight limit for checked luggage on a Princess Cruise is 50 pounds per person. However, there is a limit of two pieces of checked luggage per person. So, if you have two people in your party, you can check four pieces of luggage, but each piece cannot weigh more than 50 pounds.

There are also restrictions on the size of luggage that you can bring. Each piece of luggage must not exceed 62 inches when you add together the length, width, and height. So, for example, if your suitcase is 24 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 10 inches tall, that would be 48 inches, which would be fine. But if it was 24 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 12 inches tall, that would be 50 inches, which would exceed the limit.

If you have any questions about the weight or size of your luggage, you should contact Princess Cruises directly. They will be able to give you the most accurate information.

  • Disembarkation

An overview of some important information to help make your disembarkation as easy as possible.

On the majority of our cruises, you will be required to identify and clear your luggage through customs. As you leave the ship, you will be directed by Princess representatives to the luggage claim area. As many bags are similar in appearance, please check each luggage tag to ensure you are claiming your own luggage.

Due to U.S. and local customs restrictions, guests may not leave the ship until all luggage is off-loaded. Disembarkation will begin once the ship has received clearance from the local authorities. You will be notified within the MedallionClassÂŽ app when it is time for you to disembark. You may then make your way to the gangway.

Customs and immigration inspectors will review with you the customs declarations form upon which you have listed all the articles bought in foreign ports or in the ship's boutiques. U.S. residents returning to the United States are allowed a duty-free exemption of $800 USD per person, which includes the cost of one liter of alcoholic beverages (if purchased onboard or ashore) for each guest 21 years of age or older. Canadian citizens, when out of the country for more than 48-hours, may bring back up to $800 CAD duty-free. It is recommended that guests keep their sales receipts handy for declaring their purchases. Food items should not be brought into U.S. ports.

On cruises calling at ports of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, or American Samoa, U.S. residents are allowed an additional exemption of $1,200 USD when returning to the United States, including four liters of alcoholic beverages provided you have the proof of purchase from the designated ports. Of your $1,200 USD exemption, no more than $600 USD worth of articles may have been purchased in the islands. Articles acquired in these islands need not accompany you but may be sent to the United States and claimed under your duty-free personal exemption if properly declared. Please note that family members, who live in the same home and return together in the United States, may combine their standard personal exemptions. Children are allowed the same as adults, with the exception of alcohol and cigarettes. Please note that these are current exemptions and are subject to change.

If you have purchased a Princess ship-to-airport transfer,  Cruise Plus Hotel Package  or are participating on a cruisetour, you will be directed by uniformed Princess representatives to the transfer departure point.

If your friends or relatives are meeting you at the pier, please be advised that disembarkation may take up to four hours after the scheduled arrival of the ship in order to clear immigration and customs.

Cruise Luggage Tags F.A.Q.’s

cruise luggage tag holders

How will you get luggage tags for your cruise?

Once you complete your online check in on your cruise line’s website, you’ll be instructed to print out your cruise documents, which will include a boarding pass and luggage tags. The luggage tags will often be printed with your name, cruise ship, sailing date and cabin number.

If you’re in a guarantee cabin , your stateroom may not have been assigned, and the cabin number may be left blank. If this is the case, it’s just fine.

It’s a good idea to print out at least 2 luggage tags for each member of your family or travel party. A little extra cruise tip is to keep one “extra” with you and your cruise documents.

Can you order luggage tags through your cruise line?

In some cases, you can request adhesive printed luggage tags from your cruise line. This should be done after you receive a notification that your cruise documents or edocs are ready, however leave about 2 weeks before your cruise sailing date. This may not be available in every country, and may vary by cruise line.

You can check with your cruise line or travel agent for information specific to your booking.

Printing, folding and attaching cruise line luggage tags

It’s very simple to print your cruise ship luggage tags. I like to make several copies, so I have enough to label my cruise carry on bag, garment bag, as well as my regular size suitcases .

Instructions for how to fold the luggage tags will be on each paper (usually in 3). When folded, you can staple each luggage tag onto the handles of your luggage. Make sure to bring a mini stapler with you, especially if you go to a hotel a night before your cruise.

You may want to bring some scotch tape to reinforce the paper luggage tags as well.

Should You Purchase Cruise Luggage Tag Holders?

Cruise luggage tags aren’t a necessity for cruising, however they do make things much easier. By using the plastic luggage tag holders , you eliminate the need for stapling and using tape, and won’t worry that paper luggage tags may fall off.

Cruise luggage tag holders are durable and reusable, and truly may be one of the best purchases you ever make for cruising .

Something to note is that some cruise lines use longer luggage tags, while others use shorter tags. Make sure to check to see which luggage tag holders are right for your cruise line. I’ve listed them below in this post for your convenience.

What if you forget your luggage tags at home?

In a worst case scenario, if you forget your luggage tags at home , you can ask the porters at the cruise terminal on boarding day for assistance. They will usually be able to provide you generic tags before embarkation .

Useful article! You can also create personalized luggage tags online.

' src=

I guess you can, although you will need to use the actual cruise line tags for boarding. Personalized or novelty luggage tags are good additions. Glad you liked the article.

' src=

Is there one luggage tag holder that will fit all of the cruise line’s tags?

Not really, although it seems the shorter wider tags fit most. Longer tags are generally Royal Caribbean and Celebrity.

' src=

What’s the specific size dimensions for Carnival cruises please? I bought the 2.75 in x 4.125 in.

I don’t have the specific dimensions – you might find the answer in a Carnival facebook group or on cruise critic. If you bought the Carnival size on Amazon, that should be good (read the reviews if you aren’t sure).

Enjoy your cruise,

Hi Ilana, I’ve only begun to view your videos and read some bits of your (well-designed) website, and I’m already a fan of yours! You’re easy to understand, well-versed, easy to hear and extremely likable! Thank you for helping me prepare for our very first cruise together (as husband and wife) to embark in October on Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas. God Bless You!

Thanks for much for your kind comment. Your cruise sounds wonderful – I think you’ll love this ship.

Hi Ilana! Love your site! I’ve never used luggage tag holders before, but thought I’d try them for our Celebrity cruise this time. I ordered the ones specifically for Celebrity. When I print the tags in my edocs, they come out way smaller than the tag holders. Are they supposed to fit the exact width/height of the holders? I don’t seem to be able to print them out any larger.

Hi Louise, I wonder if it may a printer setting. I think the luggage tags usually print to a regular 8 x 11 paper size.It will likely be a bit smaller than the tag size. If you’re really not sure, perhaps it’s best to contact the cruise line.

Have a great cruise!

Princess luggage tags

Cool Cruiser

Our first Princess cruise and I just printed the luggage tags. Do they really last if you put them on before your flight? I'm used to cardboard with strings or elastic. These seem like they'll be torn off before you pick up the luggage at the airport. Any advice for using them?

We always put ours on before leaving for the airport and have never had a problem with them coming off. I do pack a spare just in case but so far-so good!

Both these methods work great.

If you put them on before your flight You can always print up extra and attach them at the pier if they happen to be missing by the time you get to the pier.

Princess has had the "print your own" luggage tags for years so it's safe to say that millions have used them as directed without any problems. I always use two luggage tags: one each for the top and side handles.

...I always use two luggage tags: one each for the top and side handles.

Good idea. I also print one extra tag page for each suitcase (even carryons) and place them inside the bags in case the outer tags come off.

BratDet

is what we use to completely cover the tags (Cheap quasi lamination)

and then attach to our suitcase.

Never had any issue.

You can also buy clear plastic luggage tag holders online. They work very well, and you don't have to worry if they get wet in the rain. Here's a picture on Amazon of a luggage tag designed for Princess' luggage tags:

Be sure to get the large cruise ship luggage holders instead of the smaller ones.

WOW! Thanks for the tip. I ordered mine right away. A little pricey ($16.95 for eight, plus shipping) but worth the piece of mind.

We always fly in at least a day early, so I borrow a stapler from the hotel front desk and staple then on as we are heading to the port.

Hello, you can also go to Office Depot or office max and have them laminated. I had 12 tag done for $4.50 plus tax. We always put our tags on after we collect our bags at the airport.

Someone posted on a previous thread that they always put the tags on before leaving for the airport. On one of their cruises, the luggage got "lost". By the time they got to the ship, it was "found" and because they had the Princess tags on the luggage was in their cabin when they boarded.

I put a copy of the luggage tag on EVERYTHING. I shrink them on my printer and put one on my cell phone, tablet, camera, full size in my purse and carry-ons. Left my carry-on in the shuttle one time and it got put in with the luggage and brought to the cabin.;)

Thanks for all the great replies!!

We put them in a laminated plastic page sleeve, trim and tape.

After folding around the handle and stapling I can lift the bag up by the tag. ;)

Here's one for 4 tags and it comes with a metal ring:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GN1E4V6/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00GN1E4V6&linkCode=as2&tag=cruisetag-20&linkId=GHS2TDDQV3IFZSWJ

I looked online to learn how to attach the tag to the luggage and found this video:

It works great, and makes the luggage so much nicer than the stapled, paper tags.

They work suprisingly well. I always put them on after my flight. If we come in a day early for the cruise, you can always borrow a stapler from the hotel desk and put them on just before heading to the ship. If we fly in the day of the cruise, I usually pack a small stapler in my carryon with the luggage tags and put them on at the airport before going to the ship (remembering to stuff the stapler in a checked bag when through with it so no problems at security)

Since American Airlines lost our luggage, we always put one tag on our luggage and leave at least one per bag in reserve for Embarkation Morning.

Over the years, we've had the plastic luggage tag holders ripped off our suitcases. Also, the disembarkation tags have gotten ripped off too.

I like those tag holders with the metal ring.

I cut my tags...along the fold line. Then I put them in 4 x 6 plastic before putting them through a laminator. I then punch a hole at the top and use a zip tie to attach to luggage.

If you are on a princess cruise tour with the tour first, do you need princess identification on your luggage? I know that once they start moving the luggage between lodges, they give identification to put on the suitcases.

There have been times I forgot the luggage tags. The porter had tags. Wrote the cabin number on them and had no problem.

ChiefBoats

We never put our ship tags on until we get to the destination airport. We also have plastic tag sleeves that we put the paper Princess tags in which protects them.

There is no need to put them on your flight! You can purchase luggage tag holders from the Cruise Critic Store and put them in there and then on your luggage before getting to ship!

The plastic tag holders you purchase last through many cruises. Amortized over their lives, very cheap and hassle free.

13 Important Things to Do Before Your Cruise (Free Checklist)

D o you have an upcoming cruise? Here are some important things you need to do to prepare yourself for your upcoming cruise. To make things easier for you, I’ve put together a checklist of things to do before your cruise, which you can download for free below. This checklist will help ensure that you have everything you need and are fully prepared for your cruise.

1. Check Your Passport Expiration

It’s important to make sure that your passport is valid before you travel since many cruise lines have strict rules about expired passports. They won’t let you board the ship if your passport has expired or is due to expire within the next 6 months.

This is also true if you’re traveling with a green card or alien resident card—you need to check that it has not expired or is about to expire soon.

If you discover that your passport or card is expired, you should renew it as soon as possible.

You can pay extra for an expedited passport renewal, but it may still take some time to process. If you can’t renew your passport in time, you may need to reschedule your cruise for a later date.

2. Online Check-In

Complete your online check-in before your cruise to make the check-in process on embarkation day faster and smoother. You can usually do your online check-in around 3 months before sailing date.

For example, Carnival Cruise Line allows you to check in online 14 days before sailing. Another advantage of checking in as soon as possible is that you can reserve your embarkation time slot. Check out my cruise embarkation tips on how to board the ship faster.

3. Sign Up for Cruise Notification

You should sign up for cruise notificationfor timely text alerts regarding changes affecting your cruise embarkation time. It is especially helpful during hurricane season when delays are more likely. With this service, cruise lines will keep you informed with up-to-date information.

4. Download the Cruise App

Don’t forget to download the cruise app before you board the ship. Nowadays, almost all cruise lines have an app that lets you book restaurants and activities, and check the daily schedule of events.

But, you can’t make reservations until you’re on the ship. By downloading the app early, you’ll be all set to book your activities as soon as you’re on board, without wasting any time downloading the app.

It’s typical for popular activities to sell out quickly, so it’s advantageous to download the app beforehand. That way, you can secure your spot and make sure you don’t miss out on your first-choice activities.

5. Buy Cruise Extras

One important thing to do to prepare for your upcoming cruise is to buy cruise extras ahead of time. If you want to pay to skip the lines during embarkation day, I sugggest you buy the cruise VIP packages. Nowadays, many cruise lines offer VIP packages such as Carnival Cruise Line’s Faster to the Fun, Royal Caribbean International’s The Key, or Norwegian Cruise Line’s Priority Access.

By doing so, you can pay to skip lines and enjoy priority boarding, direct access to guest services, priority tender boat boarding, and more.

You can also buy Beverage packages online. This will allow you to start enjoying unlimited drinks the moment you board the ship and possibly enjoy a discount by buying your beverage package early.

Plus, you can buy Wifi in advance as well as specialty dining packages so you’ll be all set when you get on the ship.

6. Book Shore Excursions

One thing I recommend doing before boarding the ship is booking your shore excursions in advance. The most popular shore excursions tend to sell out quickly.

Make sure you book your tours early so you get your first choice. It’s also a good idea to do your research and compare the prices offered by the cruise shore excursion with those of independent tour operators like Viator .

You’ll often find that independent tour operators are cheaper, and they may even use the same tour operator as the cruise. The main difference is that the cruise offers a guarantee that you won’t miss the ship if you book your shore excursion with them. By researching and booking your shore excursions in advance, you will be able to get your top choices.

7. Check Travel Advisory

Many people forget to check the travel advisory before going on a cruise. They assume that all cruise ports are safe, but unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

In fact, just recently, the US Department of State upgraded the travel advisory level for Bahamas and Jamaica .

That’s why it’s important to check the travel advisory beforehand so you can be well-prepared and take necessary precautions (check out my anti-theft cruise port tips ).

8. Print Luggage Tags

Printing your luggage tags is a must before embarking on your cruise. These tags are important for checking in at the port.

At the cruise ports, there will be porters waiting to take your check-in luggage to the ship. But without these tags, you’ll be in for a hassle and a delay at check-in.

That’s why it’s important to print your tags beforehand and attach them to your luggage. This way, your luggage will be ready to go as soon as you arrive at the cruise port. I also always print extra luggage tags just in case.

Remember to always carry important medication and travel documents in your carry-on bag, and not in your checked luggage.

9. Book Your Hotel and Transfer

One of the most common mistakes cruisers make is arriving on the day of their trip and missing the ship. Don’t let this happen to you!

To guarantee a smooth start to your cruise vacation, arrive at least a day early and stay overnight near the port.

Make sure you book your hotel in advance and ask your hotel about booking a car service to the port.

If not, you can also book private transportation from your hotel to the port on Viator.

Don’t rely on taking a cab or Uber to the cruise port. Chances are you’re not the only cruise passenger staying at that hotel. There will be delays in getting taxis and Ubers to the port because of the surge in demand.

10. Download E-Books and Movies

One thing that you should do in advance before your cruise is to download ebooks and movies at home.

First, you don’t want to be downloading when you’re on the ship since the cruise Wifi may be limited and you are wasting your data limit by downloading on the ship.

Also by downloading movies, ebooks and games in advance, you may not need the cruise Wifi since you can access them offline. It’s a smart move, so you have plenty of entertainment options at your fingertips throughout your voyage.

11. Shareholder Benefits

If you are a shareholder of the cruise line you’re planning to sail on, you could qualify for free onboard credit. You need to own a minimum number of shares and request the credit in advance.

Depending on the cruise line and the duration of your voyage, shareholders can receive up to $250 of free onboard credit. However, some cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean, offer even more, up to $1000 per sailing on world cruises.

For example, Norwegian Cruise offers shareholders $50 to $250 onboard credit per stateroom for cruises on Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, or Regent Seven Seas Cruises. To be eligible for the onboard credit, you must own a minimum of 100 shares and submit your request 15 days before the voyage.

Carnival Cruise also offers $50 to $250 onboard credit to its shareholders. To qualify, you need to own at least 100 shares and request the credit no later than 14 days before the cruise departure date. Carnival cruise shareholder benefits also apply to Princess Cruise, Holland America, Seabourn, Cunard, and Costa Cruise sailings.

For more information on how to get free onboard credit on a cruise as a shareholder , check out my article.

12. Minor Consent Forms

If you’re traveling with a minor without their parents, then you need to fill out a minor travel consent form. For example, if you are cruising with your grandchild without the parents, you will be required to complete a Minor Travel Consent Form. Typically, this form must be notarized, and you can easily find it on the cruise line’s website.

13. Start Planning What to Pack

One of the things you need to do early is start planning what to pack. Packing for a cruise is not as simple as packing for a land vacation because you might be going to places with different weather and temperatures.

There may be things you need to buy in advance that you don’t have so you want to make sure you have time to do that.

To help you with your cruise packing, I have packing advice and free packing lists for Caribbean Cruises, Alaska Cruises, Mexico Cruises, Mediterranean Cruises and even British Isle Cruises. Also check out my cruise toiletry bag and first aid kit packing list.
