Meet The Reborn 2022 Dodge Journey

More images of the Chinese-based Journey have been revealed.

After being discontinued for the 2020 model year in the US, the Dodge Journey is back. Well, sort of. Last week, the new 2022 Dodge Journey entered production , but it isn't being built for the US market.

Although there were rumors that a next-generation model is in development based on the same platform as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the 2022 Dodge Journey is a rebadged version of the Trumpchi GS5 SUV sold in China. In partnership with Stellantis, GAC Motor will export the Journey to the Mexican market. Now, Stellantis has revealed the specifications of Mexico's reborn Dodge Journey.

Compared to the Trumpchi GS5, the 2022 Dodge Journey has a larger grille with a gloss black finish, giving it a more premium appearance. It also features LED headlights and 18-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels depending on the trim.

Under the hood, the 2022 Dodge Journey is powered by a 1.5-liter turbo rated at 169 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. McPherson independent front suspension and multi-link independent rear suspension ensures a smooth ride even on rough roads.

In Mexico, the 2022 Dodge Journey will be available in three trims: SXT, Sport, and GT. As standard, SXT and Sport trims include an analog instrument cluster and a seven-inch LCD digital information screen, while the GT trim gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. An eight-inch central touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is offered as standard for all trims.

A 360-degree camera is included with Sport and GT trims. In Mexico, the 2022 Dodge Journey will start at 555,900 pesos ($27,075 USD) for the SXT trim, 615,900 pesos ($29,997 USD) for the Sport, and 645,900 pesos ($31,458 USD) for the GT. Sales of the 2022 Dodge Journey will start at the end of October.

En México en 2009 Dodge introdujo un SUV —más bien crossover—, que rápidamente se convirtió en uno de los más populares y vendidos del mercado. Pero tras varios años disponible sin grandes cambios o renovaciones perdió terreno. Afortunadamente, hoy mismo la marca americana nos presenta la segunda generación de la Dodge Journey 2022 . Una camioneta que quiere retomar eso que volvió a su primera generación tan querida, aunque con ciertos cambios puntuales. A continuación los detalles de versiones y precios para México.

El toque estético de Dodge

El nombre de Journey tiene mucho peso por todo lo que ya explicamos hace unos momentos. Aunque hay que aclarar que el modelo que estamos viendo como segunda generación no es un desarrollo total de Dodge. En este caso es un producto fabricado en China , por la marca GAC con quien FIAT Chrysler había firmado un contrato hace tiempo. En concreto es una GAC GS5 .

Visualmente recibió un tratamiento estético para acercarlo más a los trazos generales que usa Dodge en otros vehículos, en este caso con un cambio total de parrilla para dar una apariencia más cuadrada e imponente. Mientras que costados y parte trasera prácticamente están intactos, salvo por el cambio del emblema y nombre del producto.

Sus dimensiones rondan los 4.6 metros de largo por 1.8 de ancho y 1.7 de alto, además de una distancia entre ejes de 2,710 mm. Cabe destacar que acorde a la versión podrá llevar rines de 18 o 19", techo panorámico e iluminación LED en faros y calaveras.

Comodidad y equipamiento

Por dentro busca aportar un espacio cómodo, amplio y con un buen nivel de equipo. Eso sí, hay que aclarar primero que en esta ocasión la Dodge Journey queda reservada solo para cinco pasajeros , pues no llevará la tercera fila de asientos que vimos en la generación pasada en ciertas versiones.

El equipamiento es bastante completo y acorde a la versión podrá llevar un cuadro de instrumentos análogo o uno completamente digital de 12.3", pantalla táctil de 8" compatible con Apple CarPlay y Android Auto , asientos delanteros con ajuste eléctrico, ventilación, calefacción y memoria para conductor, tapicería en piel sintética, iluminación ambiental, espejo electrocrómico, cargador inalámbrico para celular, A/C automático de dos zonas, entre otros.

Destacan otros elementos como selector de modos de manejo, freno de estacionamiento eléctrico, apertura y cierre eléctrico de cajuela, así como algunos pads táctiles para controlar algunas funciones de confort desde la consola central.

Mecánica de buenas cifras

Bajo el cofre de la Dodge Journey 2022 nos podremos encontrar un motor turbo de 4 cilindros de 1.5 litros con 169 hp y 195 lb-pie de par. Su transmisión será automática de 6 marchas.

Contará con un esquema de suspensión independiente en ambos ejes , selector de modos de manejo que afectará la respuesta de la caja y pedal del acelerador para un tacto más dinámico o bien ayudar a controlar los consumos.

En cuanto a seguridad han elegido una buena serie de asistencias. Podrá contar con alerta de colisión frontal, alerta de punto ciego, alerta de cambio de carril, cámaras de visión 360º , sensores de proximidad delanteros y traseros, monitoreo de presión de llantas, asistente de descenso y arranque en pendientes, además de frenos ABS y control electrónico de estabilidad. En bolsas de aire contará con seis : frontales, laterales y de tipo cortina. Cabe destacar que en pruebas de choque realizadas por la CNCAP en China, obtuvo 5 estrellas.

Tres versiones y sus precios

Para México la nueva Dodge Journey 2022 llega en tres versiones distintas siendo las variantes SXT, Sport y GT. Con precios que arrancarán desde los $555,900 a $645,900 . Contará con 3 años o 60 mil kilómetros de defensa a defensa, auxilio vial por 7 años sin límite de kilometraje, los 365 días del año, seguro Intersafe contra robo parcial de interiores, por 7 años sin límite de kilometraje.

The Dodge Journey is Back In Mexico, Baby

Chinese automaker GAC is building the new Dodge Journey, and it looks damn sharp.

The Dodge Journey was born in 2008, and spent just over a decade in production before fizzling out in the 2020 model year . However, that name shall live again, plastered on vehicles built by Chinese automaker GAC, who will deliver them to the Mexico market in a partnership with Stellantis, reports Reuters.

The new Dodge Journey SUVs will be built on a original GAC design. Built at the company's factory in Hangzhou, China, the SUVs will be sold through the Stellantis dealership network in Mexico. It marks GAC's first real entry to the North American market. It builds on an existing joint venture between Stellantis and GAC which has struggled thus far to sell Jeep-branded vehicles in China . 

According to AutoCosmos , the new Dodge Journey is based on the Trumpchi GS5, a move which makes sense given the latter brand is a subsidiary of GAC Motor. The model has been given the Dodge treatment however, with its own front grille design and taillights, among other touches. The SUV will sport a 1.5 liter turbo engine good for 169 horsepower, paired with a six-speed automatic driving the front wheels.  The Journey will be available in three trims—SXT, Sport, and GT. The top GT trim receives, among other things, 19" wheels, a 12.3" digital gauge cluster, a 360-degree camera and hands-free trunk release. 

Speaking to China Daily , general manager of GAC Motor Zeng Hebin stated that the partnership was "a new way for us to ship our vehicles to the overseas market by cooperating with international automobile giants." GAC reportedly aims to sell 4,000 of the vehicles in Mexico by the end of 2021. The state-owned automaker has been working to develop its global presence over the past few years, already selling vehicles under its own brand in Asia, South America and the Middle East. The company has established a presence in a total of 26 countries, and exported over 35,000 vehicles overseas in 2020. 

Most diehard auto enthusiasts don't hold a lot of love for the Dodge Journey name. Despite this, the sheer fact that over 7 billion people exist on Earth means that at least a handful of people are overjoyed to hear that the Journey is coming back, even if it's built by a completely different automaker. Head over to Mexico or start chilling in border towns if you want to lay eyes on the new hotness.

Dodge’s Mexican lineup looks like the result of a drunken night in Tijuana as it starts off normal enough with the Charger, Challenger, and Durango. Things then start getting weird as there’s a rebadged Mitsubishi Mirage known as the Attitude.

While that’s something you’d never want to wake up next to in the morning, the oddest member of the lineup is the Journey . However, this isn’t the plastic fantastic crossover that clung to life for far too long as we’re talking about the ‘new’ Journey, which is a rebadged version of the China-made GAC / Trumpchi GS5.

Carscoops reader Mario recently spotted one in Michigan and it’s certainly not something you see every day. It’s not immediately clear what the crossover was doing on this side of the border, but the Journey is wearing a Michigan manufacturer plate and appears to be a run-of-the-mill model.

While its presence could cause people to believe the Journey is coming back to America, that seems highly unlikely. It’s also worth mentioning that sightings of overseas models are fairly common in Metro Detroit as we’ve seen everything from Chinese Buicks to the Ford Everest .

Getting back to the Journey, it starts at $559,600 ($32,790 USD) and is offered in SXT, Sport, and GT Plus trims. Our Spanish is a little rusty, but the crossover has LED lighting units and 18-inch alloy wheels. The model can also be equipped with a panoramic glass roof and a power liftgate.

Moving inside, there’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch infotainment system. They’re joined by a dual-zone automatic climate control system, an eight-way power driver’s seat, and a six-speaker audio system. It also sounds like higher-end variants offer heated and ventilated front seats as well as a wireless smartphone charger.

Power is provided by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine developing 165 hp (123 kW / 167 PS) and 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed automatic transmission.

China-Built 2022 Dodge Journey, Best-Selling Dodge In Mexico For December!

Since its introduction to the market in 2009,  the Dodge Journey had become a family favorite crossover for Mexican families. The Mexican-built Dodge Journey was one of the more popular options in the Dodge lineup until its discontinuation after the 2020 model year. With the three-row Dodge Durango being out of the financial reach for a majority of Mexican families, it left the Dodge brand without a viable crossover / SUV option for the Mexican market.

For 2022, the Journey returns in a totally new package thanks to the Stellantis’ Chinese connections with  Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd (GAC)  and their Trumpchi GS5. Instead of being the family-oriented three-row that everyone who was budget-minded loved, it is now a five-passenger two-row crossover. 

While many wondered how the new Chinese-built Journey would fare in the Mexico market (especially since it is ultimately replacing a vehicle that was built in Mexico), we are now learning just how well the new Journey is doing thanks to the sales reports from Stellantis Mexico.

According to the automaker, the 2022 Dodge Journey was the brand’s most popular vehicle in December. 

Available only to the Mexican market, the 2022 Dodge Journey is available in three different trim levels (SXT, Sport, and GT).

The GS5 also donates an interior that utilizes better materials, with soft-touches surfaces, and attention to detail that again surpasses the 2020 model. For SXT and Sport models, there is an analog gauge cluster with a 7-inch LCD digital information screen in the center. On the top-tier GT model, that gauge cluster is  replaced with a 12.3-inch LCD digital cluster  allowing for a much more modern and technological look. Matter of fact, it is the first Dodge vehicle to feature such a display. 

An 8-inch central-mounted touchscreen infotainment system is standard, however,  it isn’t Uconnect 5-based . Using the system straight from the GS5, the Trumpchi’s system offers Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto as standard equipment across the lineup. The system also allows for the driver to use the reversing camera with dynamic grille lines, and the support of a 360-degree surround-view camera system on Sport and GT models in HD resolution. 

Under the hood is a standard turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine delivering 169 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. The turbo 1.5-liter features a BorgWarner low-inertia electronically controlled turbocharger and second-generation Bosch high-pressure injection system to ensure the stability of combustion, reduce emissions, and fuel consumption.

The turbo 1.5-liter is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission from Aisin which offers quick response shifting, low fuel consumption, and self-learning, and adaptive intelligent control. The Aisin unit allows the Journey to have Engine Start/Stop (ESS) and Natural Control.  

The all-new Dodge Journey has a starting Manufacturing Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $555,900 MXN (or about $28,250 USD) for the SXT, $615,900 MXN (or about $31,300 USD) for the Sport, and $645,900 MXN (or about $32,825 USD) for the top-tier GT model.

The 2022 Dodge Journey is available in 6 exterior colors including, Granite, Bright White, Silver, Bright Blue, Gloss Black, and Shiny Copper.

The 2022 Dodge Journey proves to be an affordable option for the Mexican marketplace, however, can it prove to be reliable enough for Dodge to embrace the Journey in other markets? The last-generation Dodge Journey had its issues, but due to its “bang for the buck” persona, many were able to look over its faults.
