Lofoten Archipelago Expedition

Guided sea kayak expedition, norway .

The Lofoten Archipelago is a chain of breath-taking islands, extending far into the Norwegian Sea. It sits well above the arctic circle and in June and July bathes beneath the midnight sun. Its cold, rich water is teeming with wildlife and scattered with a wealth of small, uninhabited islands to explore. We will roam around its coastal waters, navigating through tidal channels and fjords, with access to wilderness few others will step foot in.

norway .png

Lofoten

Set high within in Arctic Norway, Lofoten is a truly unique chain of mountainous islands jutting far out from the main coastline. Giving it a distinctive landscape like no other.

Impressive steep mountains rise straight from the ocean and clusters of wild islands provide endless exploration for kayakers!

This expedition aims to circumnavigate the dramatic island of Austvagoya, a 130 km journey with endless options for variations. Our route will take us through the steep-sided Trollfjord, navigating the tidal channels between islands, and camping on the white sandy beaches of the wild north coast.

Paddling through historic fishing villages like Henningsvear, a beautiful town built on stilts and perched atop barren rocky islands. Look up as you paddle beneath towering granite cliffs, a draw to any keen climber. Around every corner, the landscape changes and steep mountains frame every view.

Strong currents and the cold waters of the Norwegian Sea provide nutrient-rich waters around Lofoten; a perfect habitat for sea life. We're likely to get a glimpse of a shy seal or otter, and on a calm day watch the local Orca as they pass by.

One of the most enchanting creatures we might enjoy a sighting of, is the white-tailed Sea Eagle. These enormous birds or prey are often perched at the water's edge feeding their young, or soaring beneath the steep cliffs. If you're extremely lucky you can watch these magnificent birds plucking fish from the sea.

With so much wilderness available in Norway wild camping is very accessible. The outdoors is a way of life for Norwegians, and the Lofoten people are especially welcoming to others who want to enjoy their beautiful islands.

Where we camp will depend on how far we travel each day and the location is often chosen to suit the weather conditions. There are no set 'campsites', but your guide will aim to land at some of our favourite spots; beaches facing the midnight night sun or remote islands with crystal clear waters which may even tempt you in for a swim.

We will try to ensure each camp has a water source for drinking. Although the water in Norway is very clean, we still suggest you purify your water with either tablets or a filter.

There will be no facilities other than what nature provides whilst wild camping and washing can be invigorating! Be sure to pack a sense of humour.

Green pastureland and dotted with picturesque fishing villages

Description.

These impressively scenic islands form an archipelago one hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle. It is a place of mystical landscapes illuminated by nearly continuous daylight. Glacially carved, shear granite spires rise out of a sea made rich by the meeting of the warm Gulf Stream and the Arctic Ocean. The Islands are fringed with green pastureland and dotted with picturesque fishing villages each with its own unique character and dramatic mountain backdrop. This is a true Arctic sea kayaking adventure with the advantage of finishing every day with a hot shower and a warm bed.

You’ll kayak the length of this remarkable chain of islands through indigo-blue fjords cutting between jagged peaks, stopping at white sand beaches and hiking to viewpoints for incredible panoramic vistas. At the end of each paddling day you’ll stay in “rorbus”, traditional fishermen’s lodges with time to explore these charming villages and sample the local cuisine. Great kayaking, spectacular scenery and Norway’s seafaring culture make the Lofoten Islands one of the world’s great paddling destinations.

Why take this tour?

We chose the Lofoten Islands as the venue for Norway’s first-ever guided sea kayak trip back in the late 1990s. These majestic islands with their surreal location were the perfect place to introduce Norway to adventure travelers; now over 25 years later, our iconic Lofoten Islands sea kayak expedition has become a classic in international sea kayaking destinations; a highly ranked bucket list trip.

Kayak More Tomorrow’s sea kayak specialists were the first to design and lead commercial sea kayak trips in the Lofoten Islands; no one knows these waterways better than us. We are without a doubt the sea kayak tour company with the most guiding days amongst these arctic islands.

KMT’s Iconic Lofoten Islands itinerary has been “copied” by many, but no one has been able to get it just right, so do yourself a favor and paddle with Lofoten’s best sea kayak tour company, Kayak More Tomorrow.

We have departures during June, July, and August. Also, for those who want to paddle the Lofoten Islands during other months or who want our trip designers to create a custom itinerary we are more than happy to accommodate you, just send us an email to [email protected] with your proposed dates and your groups’ details. Please keep in mind that the earlier you send us your request the more likely it is that we can accommodate you.

We are excited to paddle The Iconic Lofoten Islands with you! Book your trip Now, as availability is already limited!

Norway’s most experienced sea kayak guide is Jonathan Bendiksen. And, every year he guides a few trips for Kayak More Tomorrow! Book early to secure Jonathan as your trip’s guide!

Lofoten: 3 Hour Kayak tour in Reinefjorden

kayak tour lofoten

Surrounded by tall granite peaks, Reinefjorden is one of Norway’s most spectacular fjords. Explore the picturesque coastline dotted with fishermen’s cabins, look out for wildlife, take in the stunning views of the mountains and destress.

The landscape surrounding the Reinefjorden in western Lofoten is straight out of a Disney fairytale. It offers a contrast like no other with steep granite mountains rising straight out of the ocean and a shoreline dotted by photogenic red fishermen’s cabins. Explore the picturesque coastline, look out for wildlife and take in the spectacular views of the mountains on this relaxed paddle in the sheltered waters of Reinefjord.

Kayaking is a way for us northerners to get as close to nature as possible, and we wish our visitors to get that experience as well. We will show you the area’s highlights on this three-hour tour, tailored to suit those who have not tried kayaking before. We will start the trip from a quiet bay to familiarise ourselves with the kayak and learn basic kayaking techniques with the paddle and basic safety rules. Then, we will paddle around nearby islands and fishing villages (Reine, Sakrisøy, Hamnøy) or inside the Reinefjorden, depending on the weather conditions.

Our experienced local guide will tell you stories about the landscape, fishing villages, and life in and around the archipelago. Take the chance to ask questions about the local nature and culture as you paddle through some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole of Lofoten.

We always keep the groups small, and each participant will have time to get personal coaching from the tour guide. Safety is always our number one priority, and you will be in good hands throughout the entire experience.

The weather in Lofoten is ever-changing, which is part of the islands’ charm. We recommend to dress according to the weather and that you wear a base-layer in wool, since it wicks moisture away from your body and you won’t get cold even if you sweat or get wet.

You probably already know all about the Instagram gold vistas, the vibrant, local cuisine, the picturesque little houses and the Viking treasures found at the local museum.

But did you know that the Lofoten islands are also one of the best places for kayaking in all of Norway? That you could kayak all year long — and that the waters in the area have something for everyone?

Keep on reading for all the reasons you need to pick up your kayak and point it towards Lofoten.

You’ll get picture perfect views

If you thought Lofoten was picturesque from the road or from one of the many bridges that connect the islands, wait until you see everything from the sea.

The jutting granite cliffs; the shoreline that alternates between craggy rocks and huge, white sand beaches; the fishing villages with the traditional fishermen cabins; the way the sun rises up from behind the towering mountains of the islands in the morning… Taking in the sights of the Lofoten from the perspective of your kayak will fill you with awe.

You can kayak in calm waters

If you prefer to take it easy while kayaking (and focus on the picture perfect views we mentioned above), you’ll be glad to know that the waters in Lofoten, especially between the islets and skerries, are quite calm. So even if you’ve just started kayaking, you’ll be perfectly fine! Paddle away everyday stress and feeling great in the crystal-clear and silent waters of Lofoten.

You can also challenge yourself by kayaking near a maelstrom

Prefer an adventure instead? The outer coast of the island of Moskenes is ideal for experienced kayakers who want to challenge themselves. The mostly mountainous coast rises up to 1,000 meters (3,280 ft) from the water’s surface.

Between Moskenes, Værøy and the Lofotodden headland there is a strong, 4-5 kilometer-wide ( 2 mi) maelstrom where waters are known to run with a speed of 27.8 kph (172 mph)! Do you dare go near?

You can combine kayaking with hiking

Because of the unique terrain at Lofoten, where the towering mountaintops rise up almost straight from the water’s edge, it’s easy to combine your kayaking adventure with hiking. There are many places where you can pull your kayak easily onto a sandy shore and then go for a 1-2 hour hike up the mountains. Just imagine the views!

You can paddle in gold

During the summer months, from the end of May until mid-July, the sun in the Lofoten archipelago never dips below the horizon. That’s when they have the midnight sun.

As a result, for the longest of times the waters and the sky are bathed in a golden color that gives everything a magical sheen. Kayaking past midnight, enveloped in that golden glow… Can anything, ever, feel better than that?

You can kayak all year long

But winter at the Lofoten archipelago is equally stunning. Although you will have to limit your kayaking to the inner coast in the winter months, it’s a great way to spend a winter morning.

See, there’s a bustling life in the waters around Lofoten all year long, with fisher boats going out every morning and birds flying above (hoping to catch a little fish snack). And the pale, blue light will make your winter kayaking journey magical.

You can brag to everyone that you’ve paddled above the Arctic Circle

How many people do you know back home, who can claim that they have paddled in the Arctic? As the Lofoten islands are located 150 kilometers (93 mi) above the Arctic Circle, now you will be one of those select few!

Here’s the thing: due to the warmer waters coming from the Gulf Stream, the climate in Lofoten is much milder than it should be for Arctic terrain. So the waters don’t really freeze in the winter, making kayaking possible. Now, aren’t you glad you chose the Lofoten for your kayaking adventures?

Kayaking in the Lofoten Islands

ARRIVE IN BODØ

Arrive at Bodø airport and transfer you to your accommodation. Depending on your arrival time there may be some free time to explore Bodø, the northernmost point of the Kystriksveien Coastal Route.

  • Accomodation: Hotel

FERRY TRANSFER TO LOFOTEN ISLANDS

We will walk 10 minutes to the ferry terminal with our bags (rucksacks recommended for this journey). For those of us who don't want to walk a taxi can be arranged from our hotel for this journey. We then board our early morning ferry to the Lofoten Archipelago. We arrive into Moskenes and in the sheltered fjord of Fredvang we will take to the water in our kayaks. This is a great opportunity to familiarise ourselves with our boats and to practice handling them. We will paddle between the rocky islets and sandy beaches of this superb fjord and set up our first camp in the Fredvang area, facing the midnight sun - we will camp here for two nights.

  • Transport: Ferry
  • Activity time: 2 hours
  • Accomodation: Camping
  • Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

HIKE TO THE TOP OF RYTEN

In the morning we will start walking through the moorland towards the ridges which overlook Selfjord. It is a spectacular hike to the top of Ryten with views of the white sands of Kvalvika and the dramatic peaks of Moskenesøya Island. In the afternoon we will head back to our camp and can go kayak fishing in the ocean currents that stir at the entrance to Fredvang. Hopefully we will catch plenty of fish to add to our evening meal!

  • Hiking time: 5 hours

KAYAK TO FREDVANG AND FLAKSTAD

This morning we will break camp, load up our kayaks and take to the sea. We will paddle to Fredvang village, stopping at the spectacular Ramberg beach for a picnic on the white sands surrounded by jagged peaks. We reach Flakstad later in the afternoon and set up camp for the night. To end the day we can enjoy a lovely short coastal hike.

  • Accomodation: Wild Camp

KAYAK TO SKJELFJORD

After a hearty breakfast we will pack up camp and load up our kayaks once more. We paddle, playing with the currents, towards the village of Sund. Compared to the West coast, which is characterised by sandy beaches and turquoise waters, the East coast has a much rockier landscape. This coast is much more sheltered from the ocean winds which explains why so many fishing villages are found here, adding colour to the granite backdrop. We pass near Sund fishing village, with its traditional red rorbuer sitting on stilts at the water’s edge, and enter Skjelfjord from the south. We will set up camp here for two nights.

  • Activity time: 5 - 6 hours

KAYAK AND HIKE TO VOLANDSTINDEN

We start off in our kayaks to explore Skjelfjorden and reach the start point of our hike to Volandstinden. We paddle around Vestfjord where it is not un-common to see seals, or even killer whales and porpoises. Today’s hike offers splendid panoramas of the surrounding fjords and neighbouring peaks. Later in the afternoon, we take to our kayaks again to return to our campsite. We will take advantage of this time on the water to form a fishing party as we paddle through the rich waters.

KAYAK TO NUSFJORD

Today we will paddle through the turquoise waters of Flakstadpollen to discover the historical fishing village of Nusfjord. There will be time to visit Nusfjord before setting up camp on the outskirts of the village.

  • Activity time: 3 - 4 hours

KAYAK TO SELFJORD. TRANSFER TO REINE

We pack up our camp for the final time and kayak to Selfjord where we began our expedition. We spend some time packing away our kayaking gear and take to the road to visit the village of Reine in the extreme south of the Lofoten Islands. We will spend the night in a traditional Rorbu cabin.

  • Accomodation: Cabin

HIKE TO THE TOP OF MUNKAN

Today we will climb one of the most iconic summits of the archipelago, Munkan (798m). From the top we will have an extraordinary view of the islands. This hike brings us the closest we have been to the wild island landscapes and high rugged mountains. In the evening we take the ferry back to Bodo and settle in at our hotel.

  • Hiking time: 6 hours
  • Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch

Depending on your flight time, you may have a chance to explore Bodo before we transfer you to the airport for your return flight.

  • Meals included: Breakfast

Trip information

Formalities & health, equipment & clothing.

The kayaking and hiking on this trip is of moderate difficulty, so we have rated this trip as level 3. However, as with all Kandoo trips, we like to have the satisfaction of completing a challenge, so we can guarantee this won't be a walk in the park.

Food & drink

This trip includes full board meals except for nights spent in Bodø when meals are at your own expense. There is a range of restaurants to choose from in Bodø or the hotel restaurant is also very good.

Despite the remote areas we will travel to, we are proud of the varied, fresh and frankly delicious food we provide even when wild camping. Because everything we need for the 7 day expedition must be carried with us in our kayaks, we are limited on what we can carry and must choose our ingredients carefully. Fresh produce is used nearer the start of the trip with the more basic foodstuffs such as pasta and rice used towards the end.  Norwegian delicacies such as reindeer/minke whale dried meats, Skyr and smoked cod roe "kaviar" add a cultural element to the meal. In the evenings, you can expect dishes of quinoa, lentils, salmon fillets, tofu and reindeer. Some evening meals will be vegetarian and we will carry as much fresh veg as possible. There will also be deserts of fruit yogurt, cake or chocolate.

Please let us know about any dietary requirements when you book the trip and we will work with you to cater for your needs.

Accommodation

We provide a good quality 3 man tent per 2 people to allow for maximum space and comfort. We also provide a large mess tent for mealtimes and as a communal area. During the camping expedition you are expected to be a valued member of the expedition team and help set up / strike camps, load kayaks etc. The toilet situation whilst wild camping will be a case of finding somewhere hidden, away from camp or the path and digging a hole. Please remember to bring toilet roll and a lighter to burn it after use. In the campsites hot showers are available using a token. These will be available from your guide.

Other Accommodation

Rorbu offer an unusual and authentic trip highlight. They are comfortable, traditional cabins used by fishermen from January to April. One house suits 2 to 6 people and includes kitchen and bathroom facilities with hot showers, flushing toilets and Wifi. Depending on availability you may be in private twin rooms or alpine style bunks above the living space, either way, the Rorbu will feel luxurious in comparison to your previous nights camping. When showers require a fee, we will provide you with one token per person per day. The Rorbu will generally have all bed linen provided.

You will need a 70-90L soft duffel or rucksack as your main luggage for this trip. You may be asked to carry your luggage for the 10 minute walk from the hotel to the ferry port on Day 2 of your itinerary. We would therefore recommend bringing a rucksack where possible as this will be easier to carry. Another available option, should you not wish to carry your bag, would be to book a taxi for this journey.

Please bring a small rucksack 20-30L to use as a day bag. A soft backed rucksack will allow you to fold it into a small space in your kayak. You can bring this as hand luggage on the aeroplane. You will carry your lunch, water, spare layers and any personal medication with you each day in this bag.

How do I get there?

Budget & change, vaccinations, equipment supplied by kandoo adventures.

Kayaking in Lofoten – From calm to challenging waters

The best way to see Lofoten is from the sea, and no matter your level of experience, exploring the archipelago by Kayak is an unforgettable experience. Hattvika Lodge in Ballstad is one of the facilities offering a range of Kayaking excursions.

Into port at night without making a single noise © Tomasz Furmanek

Kayaking along Lofoten’s inner shore in the summer can be magical. The fishing villages with rorbu fishermen’s cabins, jetties, fish landing stations, village owners’ houses and fish-drying racks all face the sea, so a kayak gives you a perfect view. The water is calm between the islets, skerries and sheltered bays, with plenty of lovely places to go ashore. These days, most people see Lofoten from the road, but its best side is definitely from the sea. You can easily pull your kayak up onto the beach and then spend an hour or two climbing one of the relatively easy peaks for a bird’s eye view of the landscape.

Kayaking through the maelstrom

The rough outer coast of Moskenesøya is a challenge reserved for only the best kayakers. The trip takes four days, going from Fredvang at the north-east tip of the island, around Lofotodden to Reine, along a completely uninhabited coast. You’re at the edge of the Atlantic here, and the coast is mainly mountainsides rising almost vertically up to 1000 m (3200 ft). If you capsize here, there’s no way of getting back to shore, so you need to be able to get back in the kayak unassisted. Local knowledge is vital for safety, so you should only come here with a local guide. There are a few places to get ashore, where you will spend the night. However, the legendary Moskstraumen, or Maelstrom in the works of Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe, is not an impossible challenge if you paddle close to the shore.

Winter kayaking from Hattvika

You can even kayak along Lofoten’s inner shore in winter. Lofoten fishery is at its peak from January to April and the fishing villages are bustling. Boats go out in the morning, return before dark and then the fish are hung on racks. However, winter kayaking is much more difficult than summer kayaking, and the outer coast is now completely out of bounds. Hattvika Lodge in Ballstad offers accommodation and short kayaking trips or longer weekend trips or expeditions.

Bring your friends to Hattvika

Hattvik is the perfect place to come with your friends for a weekend. You can begin your Friday evening with some easy kayaking out in the archipelago beside Hattvika, giving your guide a chance to assess your skills. Early risers on Saturday morning will see the sunrise in the east and the mountains bathed in the dawn light. Then you can kayak east, toward Sennes and Mortsund, pull your kayaks ashore and hike up one of the peaks. From 540-metre-high Nonstind (1772 ft) on Vestvågøy, you can see most of Nordland, from Børvasstindan behind Bodø, out to Nykan off the coast of Røstlandet. On Sunday, the tour heads west across Nappstraumen to Flakstadøya, where you can visit picturesque Nusfjord and enjoy lunch at the excellent restaurant. Delicious local seafood and a hot tub make Hattvika Lodge a superb base for a kayaking weekend.

© Hattvika Lodge

Kayak camping

Hattvika Lodge also organises kayak camping throughout the summer season, and individuals and couples are welcome. A wide range of trips are on offer. Competent kayakers with a kayak license can sign up for an interesting week of varied kayaking, workshops based on themes like outdoor food, food from seaweed and kelp and how avoid impacting nature. Real experts can sign up for the challenging trip around Moskenesøya. At the opposite end of the scale are beginners’ courses, which are organised jointly with tour operator Hvitserk and can qualify you for a Kayak license.
