Guide to Getting a Travel Nursing Job on Nomad

There are four main steps to getting a travel nursing job through Nomad. We created this guide to explain how every step of the process works and hopefully answer any questions you might have while finding your next assignment on Nomad.

Step 1: Find a Job

Nomad puts you in the driver’s seat in your job search and application process. You can search through our entire inventory of jobs, filtering for those that are most interesting to you . Each job post lists all the relevant details up front, including the pay rates , location, facility and more.

Step 2: Submit an Application

Once you find a job you’re interested in, you can submit an application to indicate that interest. It’s important that each section of the application is filled out appropriately so that we can make sure you’re ready to be submitted to the facility.

Step 3: References and Checklist(s)

After submitting an application, our team will need a few more items in order to share your information with the hospital you are applying to. We’ll send you a Skills Checklist to complete and also will be reaching out to your references . After this is complete we send your information over to the hospital for consideration and if they are interested, they will reach out to you directly to complete an interview. Make sure to check your email and keep your voicemail box empty in case they call!

Step 4: Accept Offer and Begin Assignment

If all goes well, details of an offer will be sent to us, and we will work with you to make sure the information matches what you are looking for. Once accepting, you would become a Nomad Nurse , and as a W-2 employee of Nomad, you would have access to our benefits and be put on our weekly payroll.

Step 1: Find A Job

Getting started.

All nurses on Nomad have unlimited access to search through our entire inventory of jobs on our “Find A Job” page. To get started, all you have to do is create a Nomad account. Creating an account is completely free and there is no minimum commitment.

After creating an account, you will be able to start your search. We also recommend setting up your job preferences by clicking the circle in the upper right, then clicking settings. Job preferences are the best way to make sure you receive notifications when roles matching your preferences are posted on Nomad.

Searching for Jobs

There are thousands of jobs on Nomad, and we are posting new jobs every day. To help you isolate opportunities that interest you, you can search and filter our jobs on a variety of criteria. You can search by specialties, states and major cities. Additionally, you can filter by start date and schedule to fit your needs.

When you search and filter, matching jobs will be listed for you to browse through. Basic details about the jobs are listed, and you can click the star in the upper right corner of the job box to save the job to revisit or apply to later. The jobs that you star or apply to will automatically go to the “Saved Jobs” page within your account. To learn more about a specific opportunity, click into it to view the job description.

Job Details

We know that having as much information about a job is crucial in making a decision, so we list as much information as possible. Each of our job descriptions include some photos of the hospital and surrounding area, as well as information about the facility, pay, assignment length, and schedule.

Job Details: Pay

The hourly pay rate that you see on our jobs is a blended rate. The first segment is the non-taxable weekly stipends which includes housing, meal and incidentals. This amount is set by the GSA based on the cost of living in the area the job is located and will be received each week regardless of how many hours you work.

The second segment is your hourly taxable income, which will be taxed. The two segments together reflect total gross weekly pay. You can see an estimated breakdown of the pay for each position in a compensation table beneath the job description.

We know that every person’s taxable situation is different, so we list the taxable and non-taxable portions separately. You can calculate an estimate of your “take home pay” by subtracting any applicable state and personal taxes from the taxable portion of the pay and adding it to the non-taxable portion.

Outside of this pay, we also offer a reimbursement of up to $1000 to get to your assignment based on miles traveled. For the exact mileage reimbursement rates, visit the GSA website here .

Job Details: Schedule and Shifts

The start date that is listed on our jobs is the goal start date from the hospital. Unless “ASAP Start” is listed in the title of the job, there is typically some flexibility of about 1-3 weeks after the start date. Sometimes, the listed start date for a job will pass, but the job will still be up on Nomad. This doesn’t mean the job is no longer available. If a job is closed or filled, we remove it from our website so you can no longer see it. If a job is still listed on Nomad, it is still available.

Beneath the compensation table, there are details about the hours and shifts. We list the contract length (most commonly 13 weeks), the shift times, and the expected hours. In most cases, the expected hours are 36 per week, which is the average amount of hours you will be expected to work while on assignment.

Job Details: Facility

To learn more about the hospital, you can scroll to the bottom of the job description page. The hospital address, website, and overall description is listed here. We also provide a map of the area with nearby shops, restaurants and attractions.

Choosing Jobs To Apply to

With so many great opportunities to choose from, it can be hard to know which one is the best fit for you. Below is a list of things that we have found help make for a good fit:

• 1 or more years recent experience in the listed specialty (within last 2 years)
• All certifications listed on the posting or being willing to obtain them - please be prepared to let us know the status of each certification
• Having the state license required or having already applied for it - please let us know the status
• Can start on date listed or within 1-3 weeks after the date listed
• Meeting any other requirements listed in the description of the job

Being Considered for a Job

In order to be considered for an opportunity on Nomad, you will need to submit an application within your Nomad account. To do this, click into a job and then click the blue “Apply” button on the right side. This will walk you through all the necessary sections and documents that we need.

If you have already started filling out your profile, the information will be automatically transferred over so you will not need to enter it again. We will not send your information to any hospital or position that you do not apply for; you are always in the driver’s seat for which jobs you want to be considered for.

Step 2: Submit An Application

Submitting a complete application is a crucial step in getting a job on Nomad. There are multiple sections in the application, and it is best to take the time to complete each of them fully so you don’t have to go back and add or change anything. You will only need to fill out an application once, and then you will be able to one-click apply for all other jobs on Nomad.

This section asks for details like your address, phone number, and resume. For your resume, make sure to upload the actual resume file (PDF, Word Document, etc.), not a picture of your resume.

This is also where you will enter when you are available to start an assignment and put in any requested time off. It is important to have these details available up front, as these are crucial details in a hospital’s consideration of your application. Your requested time off will need to be approved while your application is being considered as that information will be included down the line in the offer and contract stage.

The hospitals that we work with also require entering a photo of yourself along with your SSN. This information is encrypted and secure, and is only used as a form of identity verification.

Credentials

You will be able to enter your state licenses and certifications here. If you have a compact license, you will not need to indicate this anywhere. We pull a license report from Nursys to accompany your applications, and this contains the status of your licenses and indicates whether they are multi-state or single state.

For your certifications, you may have one that is not an option listed in the selection tab. If you would like to have it included in your file, simply send it to [email protected] and we can have it included with your applications.

Disciplinary Questions

We ask a series of questions about your clinical experience and licenses along with any actions taken against them. It is important that you answer these questions truthfully, as any discrepancies can result in the suspension of your Nomad account.

Work Experience

For the education portion, please enter all levels of education you have received. If you have achieved an MSN, make sure to list your ASN and BSN as well.

The work history section of your application is one of the most important sections. The hospitals we work with require a full seven-year work history to be listed. Each individual travel assignment at each hospital must be listed as its own entry, not the agency you worked with . We understand that this can be time-consuming, especially for seasoned travelers, but unfortunately the hospitals require this information to be entered in this section in order to be considered.

For any gaps over 30 days between jobs or after finishing school, a Work History Gap explanation is also required. The explanation does not have to be detailed - it can be as simple as “personal time off for the holidays” - but it is required. If any of these gaps exist, make sure to send an email to [email protected] with the dates and explanations.

In order for us to be able to pass along your information to the hospital for consideration, we need to get responses from at least two managers within the past 1-2 years who oversaw your clinical skills. This can be a charge nurse, nurse manager, director of nursing, or other type of supervisor. When entering their title and the years you worked with them, make sure that they correspond to a particular job or assignment you have entered in your work history.

Please provide an accurate phone number and email address for your references and give them a heads up that we will be reaching out to them. The form they need to fill out takes less than 2 minutes and it will only need to be completed once.

Step 3: References and Checklist(s)

Skills Checklist

After you successfully submit your application, we will send you a Skills Checklist for the specialty listed on the job. You will need to fill a separate checklist for each specialty of job you apply to, but you will only need to fill out the checklist once. Each checklist is valid for 1 year.

You will be able to access skills checklists on the page that comes up after submitting your application. We also send you an email with a link to get there.

Note: The skills checklists are hosted on a separate web page and unfortunately is not optimized on mobile devices. The checklist will need to be completed on a computer.

In addition to sending you a checklist to complete, we will also send an email to your references once your application is submitted. We need responses from at least 2 references in order to share your information with the hospital. If we haven’t heard from your references via email, we will also trying giving them a call to complete the reference over the phone.

Once your skills checklist(s) is complete and we have two reference forms completed, we will send all of your information over to the hospital to be considered.

Follow-up and Interview

After your information has been shared with the hospital, the next step in the process would be an interview. Some hospitals will give you a call to conduct a phone interview, while others will send you a virtual interview to complete via email. Make sure your voicemail box is not full and you are monitoring your email for any interview request or update. We actively follow up with our hospital contacts to make sure you are aware of any updates, including if the job has been filled or to be expecting a phone or email interview.

After a phone or email interview, reach out to a Nomad Navigator to let them know that it occurred and how it went. This will allow us to check-in with our contact and help move things to the next step in the process: the offer.

If all goes well and schedules line up, the hospital will send us the details of an offer to share with you. A Nomad Navigator will reach out to you directly and work through the details of the offer with you. We make sure everything aligns with what you are looking for so you ultimately accept. It is important to be very responsive and communicative in this stage, as the details of your contract and offer will not be modifiable once you accept and sign.

According to the British Council 1.5 billion people are learning English worldwide. Having taught English for 20 years I highly recommend this profession, because it is a great way to see the world and meet new friends. Lets look at some of the best places to teach.

South Korea , China , Japan , Taiwan , Thailand and Vietnam , which offer great jobs and opportunities to save money, but sometimes require a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL certificate. In many of these countries, if you do not have a degree, signing up for language classes will help you obtain a residence permit.

Spain , France and Germany , Chile , Mexico which are ideal for liberal arts students, teachers and those who want to keep in touch with their home country but may have lower salaries and higher living costs. These countries are break even countries where living expense and salary meet.

UAE , Saudi Arabia and Kuwait , which offer high salaries and benefits, but have strict cultural and religious norms and may require a master's degree and prior teaching experience. Higher education jobs have a plethora of overseas teaching jobs in higher education and online.

Bartending, Barista, and Waitstaff

Bars, nightclubs and restaurants are located worldwide, and the job description is pretty much the same everywhere. It helps to speak the language, so you may need to invest in a few weeks of language classes.

Touristy places will be easier to find work in this industry and there’s no minimum or maximum time requirement. The more experience you gain as a bartender, the more job opportunities will open up, with a potential for higher income.

You could consider working as a local tour guide or assistant for an international tour company, either at a single popular location or for multi-destination tours. Another option is to become a travel entrepreneur and create your very own custom tours!

Maybe it’s the best unmarked surf spots (think California, Costa Rica or Portugal), an awesome local hiking trip, or showing people the coolest bars and restaurants in town. Becoming a tour guide is a great way to earn money in the travel industry while sharing your love of traveling.

Yoga, Fitness, Dance Instructor

Being a yoga, fitness, and dance instructor is a rewarding and fulfilling job. As an instructor, you have the opportunity to guide and inspire others on their journey to a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. Japan announces new digital nomad visa

Japan is set to introduce a digital nomad visa allowing remote work for up to six months. Available for nationals of 49 countries, including the UK and the US, it will require a ¥10 million income and private health insurance and will not entitle holders to a residence card.

• Buying property:  Real estate prices in Japan vary greatly depending on the location and property size. It’s important to research and consult with local experts before considering purchasing property
• Food and drink:  Grocery costs in Japan can be reasonable, especially if you opt for local options. Eating out at local restaurants can vary, with a meal for two costing anywhere from ¥2,000 ($18) to ¥5,000 ($45)
• Transport:  Public transportation in Japan is efficient, but commuter costs can add up. The average monthly cost for transportation passes is around ¥10,000-¥15,000 ($90-$135)
• Owning a car in Japan comes with additional costs such as parking fees, taxes, and maintenance
• Utilities: Electricity, water, gas, and internet services in Japan can vary based on region and usage. It’s essential to factor in these costs when managing your budget

Start by creating a budget that considers all your potential expenses: travel costs, accommodation, food, insurance, and work-related expenses like internet access. It’s also smart to think about the cost of living in different places, as this can vary greatly. Some digital nomads choose destinations where their money goes further, which can be a good way to manage finances.

Dealing with irregular income means you should also have an emergency fund. This is money set aside to cover unexpected expenses, like a sudden trip home or a medical emergency. A good rule of thumb is to have enough in this fund to cover at least three to six months of living expenses.

2 – Establish an income

For many, the dream of becoming a digital nomad starts with finding the right kind of work. This work needs to be something you can do online, from anywhere in the world. It could be a job you already have that allows for remote work, or it could be a new career path entirely.

Unlike traditional travelers, digital nomads need to balance the excitement of exploration with the need for a stable work environment. This balance often starts with choosing the right accommodation.

As a digital nomad, your accommodation is a place to sleep as well as your office. Look for places that offer reliable internet and a quiet space for work. Many digital nomads opt for short-term rentals, co-living spaces, or hostels that cater to remote workers. These can offer not only a place to stay but also a chance to meet other nomads.

When it comes to travel, planning is key. Moving too frequently can be tiring and disruptive to your work. It’s often better to stay in one place for a longer period. This allows you to establish a routine, enjoy your surroundings, and reduce travel costs. 

4 – Build a network

Having a network is always a good idea but it’s especially important as a digital nomad. As a digital nomad, you’re often away from your traditional support systems like family and long-term friends. Creating a new network can help fill this gap.

Try connecting with other digital nomads. They understand the lifestyle and its unique challenges. You can find these connections in online communities, social media groups, and forums dedicated to digital nomads. Engaging in these platforms allows you to share experiences, get advice, and even find new opportunities.

Another way to build your network is by attending meetups, conferences, or workshops aimed at digital nomads. These events are great for meeting people in person and can lead to lasting friendships and professional relationships. They’re also a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and stay updated on trends and tools that can help you on your nomadic journey.

I left Miami for a remote village in Pakistan. I have no running hot water and limited electricity — but my quality of life here is infinitely better.

When I tell people from back home that I live in Northern Pakistan, I'm usually met with shock.

Their disbelief escalates when I show them pictures of the snow-capped Karakoram mountain range that surround the village where I live.

"I thought Pakistan was a desert" is the most common response. As wrong as they are, I don't blame them. I didn't know much about Pakistan before traveling there after college.  

I live in Hunza Valley, 8,500 feet above sea level on the border with Western China, where I work as a digital nomad.

When I first came to Pakistan in 2019, I was a recent University of Miami grad who'd never lived outside the US. 

In Hunza, electricity comes on for only a few hours a day, you walk to the local market if you need anything – Amazon doesn't deliver to the mountainous valley region – and running hot water isn't guaranteed. 

The valley has, despite these elements, become my home. Here, I don't lock up my bike or my front door, I can walk everywhere, and my recent major home renovation cost me only $3,000. 

Current guidance around traveling to Pakistan 

The US travel advice for Pakistan is to avoid traveling to Balochistan province, many parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the Indian-Pakistan border because of the potential for terrorist attacks, kidnapping, and armed conflict at the border.

The US government warns that the assistance it can provide citizens traveling in Pakistan is limited because of these security issues. However, I have personally traveled to some of these areas and did not feel unsafe at the time.

Although this doesn't mean these threats aren't real and something to consider, many foreign nationals and local Pakistani people travel to the Hunza Valley without incident. Forbes recently named Pakistan an up-and-coming adventure vacation . CN Traveller also awarded Pakistan as their  top holiday destination in 2020 .

My journey to a remote village in Northern Pakistan 

My love of travel began at college. From 2014 to 2019, I was a student at the University of Miami in Florida. While I loved my school, being by the beach, and Florida's eternal summer, I never felt settled in Miami. 

Because I grew up in suburban Connecticut, the move to a busy city was a big adjustment. It was noisy and fast-paced, and the proximity to crime, common in urban areas, put me on edge. 

I had never traveled outside the US growing up, but I fell in love with backpacking at college. My trips became more and more offbeat. I was traveling through India the summer before my senior year in 2018 when I decided to pursue a career in travel. 

I wanted to become a freelance travel blogger after graduation

I worked three part-time jobs while finishing my degree to save up for my indefinite adventure.

After graduating in 2019, I set off for India again, traveling around the country and into neighboring Pakistan. 

Despite media negativity and concerns from family and friends, I didn't feel nervous crossing the border from India. I traveled from the historical city of Lahore to the Hindu Kush mountains of Upper Chitral — a region that directly borders Afghanistan — and felt comfortable everywhere I went. 

I found it easier and more fun to travel here than in India, a much more "mainstream" backpacking destination. I encountered fewer scammers traveling in Pakistan. I also found Pakistan had less trash on the streets, and the roads were in better condition.

I worked for DoorDash and learned Urdu while waiting out COVID-19 limitations

In December 2019, I returned to my family home with the plan to move to Pakistan full time in the spring as a digital nomad.

My plans were halted by COVID-19. I spent the next year learning Urdu, the national language of Pakistan, and delivering for DoorDash. I also finally saw some freelance traction. 

I got my first paid byline, increased my blog traffic, and freelanced in content writing and social-media management. I wanted to have established myself as a digital nomad before I left home.

In April 2021, I traveled alone to Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. I hadn't arranged a guide and had no plan beyond my first few nights at a hostel. To many, my trip seemed insane, but I was committed.

Why hunza valley .

My 2021 journey brought me to Hunza Valley for a reason. I'd head it was well known as the safest destination for solo female travelers , largely due to its liberal culture toward women .

Hunza Valley is a remote area in Northern Pakistan. The Gatorade-blue rivers and snow-capped mountains make Hunza a popular tourist destination. The local community is known for its hospitality, and I immediately felt at home – something I'd never felt in big-city America.

The community is welcoming of outsiders — respecting and taking care of guests is a core value here. Before 9/11, there were droves of foreign travelers coming to Hunza, and many locals and their families worked in tourism, so I was welcomed readily. 

Hunza is home to a majority Ismaili community , a liberal sect of Islam. Teens hang out in mixed groups, women own restaurants and shops, and it's common for girls to receive higher education.

I settled in Hunza and have lived here for nearly two years.

Many Westerners I've spoken with have trepidations about Pakistan

Hunza itself could not be safer. I don't worry about locking my bike, or even my doors. I've never witnessed a crime of any kind, nor any of the terrorist incidents the US State Department warns travelers of.

Barely a day after I'd arrived, I found myself lost on a 5-mile trek I set out on alone. Wandering, I ran into a young male shepherd. He insisted on showing me the route back and carrying my bag.

I kept waiting for "that moment" for which all solo female travelers are on high alert — but it never came. The shepherd was polite and helped me safely find the trail.

I think I felt more comfortable in Hunza than I did in Miami for several reasons: The local cuisine shared many similarities with my Polish grandma's recipes, I experienced daily peace, and being surrounded by 20,000-foot peaks made me feel like I positively was on another planet.

I didn't have great WiFi for the first few months of living in Hunza, which was stressful at times. I've since found work-arounds, but it's not simple. 

The biggest issue is that electricity comes on for only  around 5 or 6 hours a day, primarily at night

I knew Northern Pakistan didn't have great electricity from my 2019 trip to other mountain valleys. Regardless, I always travel with a power bank.

I remember times when the electricity wouldn't come on as planned and I'd forgotten to charge my devices properly. I found it incredibly stressful, especially if I had a lot of work.

Once, while on a road trip through Upper Chitral, another mountainous region in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, my power bank fell in water and wouldn't turn on.

I was in an area even more remote than Hunza and knew the power bank likely wasn't sold anywhere in Pakistan. The bank amazingly came back to life, but I did end up breaking another one a year later.

When these things happen, it makes me miss conveniences like Amazon, but a company called Daraz does manage to deliver plenty of items to Hunza within two or three days. 

Power banks and other electronics can also be sourced from other countries via Packr, an app I've used several times to receive items from the US.

Now I have a permanent home, I've arranged more long-term solutions. 

I bought a $35 UPS car battery at a local market, which keeps my WiFi router and basic lights working 24/7. I also have two 26,800-mAh Anker power banks as backups, the 2nd of which I purchased after that road-trip scare.

How i live and work in hunza valley.

One month of accommodation costs between $150 and $250 on average — a far cry from the $1,300 I paid in Miami to share an apartment with roommates.

My life in Hunza began in Gojal, the local name for the northern portion of the region. When I arrived, I stayed in hotels. Nowhere I stayed cost more than $15 a night, and if I got a long-stay rate, they averaged closer to $8 a night.

Hunza was slightly more expensive than I thought, especially before I found permanent accommodation. 

I was shocked by how expensive some hotels were. Budget options are available, but a large portion of Hunza's tourism caters to the wealthy sector of the domestic market.

This experience has positively influenced my career as a freelancer. I've had my stories published in major media outlets. I also run an Instagram account and a YouTube channel focusing on life here and helping travelers plan their trips.

I now live in aliabad in central hunza, the largest town in the district .

I met my now partner, Fareed, in a local coworking space a few months after I arrived in Hunza. He was born and raised in Hunza and now works in trekking tourism.

We're happily settled in Aliabad in central Hunza, close to my partner's family, who have become a second family to me. 

I've started learning Burushaski, one of the two major languages spoken in the valley. My partner speaks perfect English, so there's no language barrier.

Aliabad has high-speed fiber-cable WiFi, which makes uploading content or taking Zoom calls easy, and it's where you'll find amenities like ATMs, stores, small hospitals, and a few restaurants and shops.

Even so, Aliabad is still a village in many ways

The main roads are paved, but many residential areas have dirt roads. Everything from the doctor to my cellphone provider is within a 15-minute walking radius. 

My partner and I moved into a house his parents owned. It had no electricity, flooring, or running water. We recently renovated two rooms and added a bathroom with running water and a Western toilet. It ended up costing about $3,000.

If we were renting, it would cost around 20,000 Pakistani rupees a month, or about $50. Renting might have been cheaper in the short term, but I love having a space all our own.

A meal at a restaurant is usually between $2 for local spots and $7 for Western fare, but cooking at home is much less expensive and often tastier. WiFi costs around $8 for unlimited data each month, and I pay $4 for 10 gigabytes of data for my SIM card.

Hot water is also not a given in Hunza — but an $80 gas-powered water heater solved that, with refills totaling about $20 a month. The electricity that does come is only about $2 a month, and the cold running water, sourced from a glacier, is free.

Aliabad has a cold desert climate.

The coldest month is January, with temperatures averaging 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Frequently frozen pipes and a lack of central heating mean winter can be difficult.

Having spent most of my life in Connecticut, I was used to cold, long winters, and I find Hunza's to be shorter. 

Winter limits my daily activities, but it almost feels like a cozy hibernation period.

The benefits of living in Hunza Valley far outweigh any negatives

I save thousands each month compared with living in a US city, and my quality of life is infinitely better.

I avoid the American hustle culture, which I find toxic. The people I meet in Hunza are generally quiet, polite, and respectful. I breathe clean air and eat organic, home-cooked food for every meal. 

Though my solo journey to Pakistan started as a trip, Hunza Valley is now my home. I've even obtained the equivalent of permanent residency. With the money I've saved, I hope to travel to other countries, with Hunza as my base.
