Completely customizable, book with confidence, unbeatable support, things to know.

Embark on a self-guided cycling odyssey, designed for a tailor-crafted and adaptable getaway on two wheels, unveiling wonders at your own pace while having the freedom to alter your itinerary or path as needed. Our dedicated team meticulously handles all facets, encompassing lodging arrangements, thorough planning, GPS navigational aid, and continuous support, to gift you a tranquil and engrossing journey. This venture champions autonomy, personal expression, and genuine cultural engagements.

Our tours are segmented into three tiers of difficulty: Leisurely , Moderate , and Challenging , categorized by the usual daily routine, although there may be variations in difficulty throughout the trip.

Leisurely tours are ideal for those in pursuit of a relaxed adventure amidst stunning landscapes, without the challenge of covering long distances or tackling rough terrains. These journeys typically cover 30-50 km each day, with an elevation gain of up to 500m. This allows plenty of pauses to relish the scenic vistas, enjoy local delicacies, and explore charming villages and towns along the way.

Moderate bike tours are tailored for those seeking a beautiful blend of scenic trails and a dash of challenge. Generally covering 50-80 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 1000m, these tours traverse enchanting landscapes and delightful villages, featuring a mix of flat and rolling terrains. They not only provide ample chances to stop and explore but also ensure a satisfying cycling workout.

Challenging bike tours are meant for experienced cyclists eager to push their limits. Spanning 80-120 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 2000m, these tours entail tackling steep ascents and demanding terrains. Though these tours require a high level of fitness and endurance, the exhilarating feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day, coupled with breathtaking views, makes the endeavor thoroughly rewarding.

We are devoted to discovering the ideal match for you. We collaborate with numerous lodging providers who meet our standards, although their availability may fluctuate, especially during peak demand times. Furthermore, we can customize your vacation to align with your preferences and budget, ensuring we identify the most fitting choice for your needs.

We advise booking your tour at the earliest opportunity, especially for popular tourist destinations with limited lodging availability. Prime choices often get snapped up for the summer before spring even arrives.

Addressing dietary preferences can vary based on their complexity. In Portugal, vegetarian options are generally available, but finding vegan meals might be more challenging in rural areas or smaller towns. Notably, lunch stops are often at traditional eateries which may not cater to special dietary needs beyond their standard menu. Keep this in consideration as you plan your adventure.

The ideal cycling season in Portugal stretches from mid-April to mid-October. In elevated regions like the Serra da Estrela, it’s preferable to cycle from mid-May to September.

Tours in Portugal can continue in light rain with the appropriate clothing. Summer frequently witnesses afternoon thunderstorms, making early tour starts recommended. If challenging weather conditions are expected, we’ll strive to adjust the tour beforehand.

Highlights: arrival, 5:00 PM welcome orientation Overnight: Porto

Day 2 Bike from Porto to Furadouro: 45 km / 28 mi

Today you will cycle on calm and serene roads, with fresh ocean breezes and sea views. On the way, you will cross several small beaches, such as Valadares, Francelos and Miramar, by cycling on a path near the coastline. Although the water might be too cold for some, these beaches are a great spot to take a dip and enjoy the sun (if the weather conditions allow it!) Miramar Beach is especially worth a stop to visit the little chapel that sits on the top of some rocks by the shore; the famous Capela do Senhor da Pedra.

Meals: breakfast Distance: 45 km / 28 mi, elev gain +200m Overnight: Furadouro

Day 3 Furadouro Loop Ride: 49 km / 30 mi

After a great breakfast, get ready to ride around Furadouro! On this day you will have the opportunity to explore the surroundings of this town and stop for some visits and activities. The tile factory is an example of where you will see ceramics and tiles with typical paintings, such as arrastão or moliceiro boats, beaches, fishermen, and sardines, to name a few. On the way and in the area of Ovar, there is the church of Santa Maria de Válega, known for its beautiful, brightly colored tiles on the facade; it truly is a must see. After your ride, it is back to the hotel, where you can rest and enjoy its amenities.

Day 4 Furadouro to Aveiro: 39 km / 24 mi

Another day with fresh air by the sea! Today you have some magnificent pine forests to ride through, as well as easy, flat roads that lead you to Ria de Aveiro. The Ria de Aveiro is a shallow coastal lagoon connected to the Atlantic Ocean. You will then arrive at the vegetation-rich dune system of São Jacinto, an incredible natural reserve that is home to many valuable species and is the perfect place to watch some wildlife! Then, you will catch the ferry to Portugal’s own “little Venice,” Aveiro.

Day 5 Aveiro to Praia de Mira: 41 km / 25 mi

It is from here that salt is extracted by a very old and traditional method, one that is passed down through the generations. As you head on, you will arrive at a dock in which you can view the harbor and some old codfish boats. After, you will cross the main bridge and arrive in Barra Village. From here, you will head south on the bicycle path, which avoids the open road and traffic. As you arrive to the end of it, the landscape will begin to change into small fields and vegetable gardens, right up until Mira Beach.

Such an incredible trip. Loved the variety of routes. The hotels went above our expectations with incredible breakfasts. The bikes were great for the variety of surfaces. We just had a great time…it was 3 years in the making but so worth the wait. Thanks again!

First I’d like to say that we had a wonderful trip. All the hotels were great and much of the cycling was very enjoyable. The local agents in Porto were extremely nice and helpful. The loop ride in Furadouro was slightly more challenging than we were prepared for. The restaurants were all fantastic and overall a very enjoyable trip.

Self-guided bike tours in Portugal: what to expect

What to expect and how to prepare for a self-guided bike tour in portugal.

Riding by yourself

Our self-guided tours can start with minimum two travelers, so don't count riding in a group - you'll be riding in your own group, most of the times. That is a great option for those who value independence and choosing their own timing and pace. But make sure you take some time before the tour to ride by yourself or with the fellow riders you'll be sharing the trails/roads with.

More independence = less support

Unlike guided bike tours, self-guided bike tours do not have an accompanying support van. This means that it's your responsibility to get to the next hotel every day, even if you head into bad weather or just don't feel like riding anymore. If you do run into trouble, though, call the emergency hotline, and we will help as much as possible. So make sure you follow our packing list and bring all the gear necessary to prepare for weather changes.

Self-Navigation and bike repair

You are expected to follow the tracks on your GPS which are your main navigation system, so basic understanding or experience of GPS is a plus ( we do, however, explain how to use the GPS's on your private briefing). You'll also be expected to fix your own flats (If you don't know how to, ask your local bike mechanic to show you how to do it or ask our guide at the initial briefing) and handle minor bike repairs during the ride. In the rare case of bicycle breakdowns, you may be asked to take public transportation or a taxi to the next town, where there may be a repair shop that can fix the problem - we work with several bike shops throughout the routes and they will be able to assist you with mechanical problems ( according to their availability). Make sure you know how to change a flat and handle minor issues that may occur during your rides.

Ride in similar conditions

On most of our bike tours, you'll be riding several days in a row. Make sure you prepare yourself by riding the same type of bike you'd be using on the tour in order to better simulate the conditions you are going to encounter - it's very different to ride in mountain, road or hybrid bikes. Also, we suggest you ride at least two days in a row, so your body adapts better to these conditions and to take notice of the average mileage and altimetry you'd be riding on your tour itinerary - make sure you experience riding those many miles before you do the tour.

If you are an experienced rider and like to explore on your own, a self-guided bike tour might just be best option for you! If you need any help or guidance, don't hesitate to  contact us .

Bikes: Good to excellent, saddle size was a downgrade. The large, padded saddles caused new friction where sitting wear points didn't exist. Unfortunately, bike companies refuse to standardize bike saddles so there is no solution for clients traveling too far to bring a saddle. Route: appreciate the tremendous work on routing . . . but it appeared as fair-weather routing. Spring rains turned many (most) miles of hard-packed dirt (with a bit of gravel) into mud, hectares of mud. (And in the water/mud, one cannot see the potholes.) We made a few ride-arounds after bogging down too often in the seasonal mud. We also rode around the silly segment to 'walk the bikes on the sand'. Recommend Eurobike recommend one free and one pay mapping routing service to clients to use with the GPX provided. Lodging: Strongly prefer lodging on the route and with local flavor vs corporate (holiday vs business traveler). Lagos - Hotel Tavoli had ants in the bathroom. Lodging at Albefera, Cerro da Marina was excessively off the route and in a heavily residential area. Luggage transfer: perfect.

It was a wonderful experience. The hotels are way above my expectations. Just one little thing not too important is that there is drop off fee at Faro airport. I totally recommend this tour to my friends.

Cycling in the Douro Valley Tour

Cycling in the Douro Valley

We had a terrible experience with Exodus. We signed up for a "Self-Guided Cycling in the Douro Valley" several months in advance. Our detailed contacts were asked for by Exodus, but then never communicated to the actual operator. This meant that our agreed pick-up driver never showed up (he had incorrect information) and we had to fumble with international calls and roaming charges to contact a real person on a Saturday morning. Exodus could have offered us compensation on the spot for this ordeal. I wouldn't recommend their trips to anyone. Look around as Exodus charges a fortune.

What people love about self-guided tours in portugal.

Had a unbelievable trip and it was definitely 4 stars the whole way. The tour guides were outstanding and just wish we had more time to explore the cities of Poroto and Lisbon. Should have spent 14 days instead of 8. Hats off to TourRador and Flag Travel Holidays for a trip of a lifetime.

The mountain biking was unbelievable. It was both challenging and rewarding. I loved the different terrain and remarkable views. We never knew what to expect around the next turn. This route was perfect for us! In total it was 6 epic days of riding, 180 beautiful miles, and 15,000 feet of elevation gain, making this trip one of best vacations I have ever taken. Portugal Bike Tours comes highly recommended.

An amazing time cycling in Portugal

Had an amazing cycling experience in Portugal. Can’t say enough about our trio, Joaquim , Luis & Rodrigo who were an amazing team, patiently guiding us through rough and difficult terrains with their skills and expertise. Throughout the trip they took great care to manage our group efficiently and in a friendly manner, always looking after our safety and comfort. Definitely recommend this company for a bike tour in Portugal

8 days − self guided, 3 & 4* hotels & country inns.

Ride alongside the Portuguese northern coast to arrive in Lisbon!

This self-guided bike tour is a beautiful journey down the Portuguese shoreline and visiting many cultural and historic sites. It links two of the main cities in Portugal, Porto, and its vibrant capital, Lisbon and many seaside places like Figueira da Foz and Óbidos, the walled town.

Enjoy Porto, a Unesco World Heritage City in Western Europe and learn about its famous wine and gastronomy, experience Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal, and arrive in Lisbon, a city that has served as inspiration for many artists, writers, photographers and filmmakers through the ages.

Admire its brightly coloured buildings straddling the slopes, striking ochre roofs, tile-covered building facades and narrow twisting alleys of the medieval districts.  It is one of Europe’s finest capital cities and a great achievement to cycle to!

This was our second bike tour with Cycling Country and Portugal did not disappoint. Thank you again.”

Birmingham, England

Day 1. PORTO ARRIVAL

Arrive into Porto  and to your hotel in this historic and fascinating city. Creating a bit of a buzz for itself, Porto has become a popular cultural place and you will enjoy your day exploring the Ribeira , the medieval centre and its many interesting buildings, cafes, galleries and shops. Gof for a walk riverside, seeing the Eiffel bridge or over to the Port Wine lodges on the southern bank, but be careful on your way home! Don’t over enjoy those lodges. A UNESCO Heritage city, you will be spoiled for choice here for what to do and that is true especially so for dinner, as the city has many fine Portuguese spots to dine.

Day 2. PORTO TO FURADOURO

Ride: 42 km | Elevation Gain: 77 m It is always nice to get out of the big city and your cycle today is a nice flat one, in which you will just fly along. Via many small towns hugging the coast with Umbrella fir trees and sandy beaches it is a pleasant ride. Heading towards Furadouro , surrounded by pine forests, you will enjoy this quiet ride and the town itself is a good base for the night.

Day 3. FURADOURO TO AVEIRO

Ride: 40 km | Elevation Gain: 40 m Another great day of flat cycling and through the nice Natural Reserve of Sao Jacinto with a small boat transfer. Aveiro is a popular day trip from Porto and it known as the Portuguese Venice with so many inlets and canals with brightly hand painted colourful boats called Moliceiro , used for collecting seaweed bobbing in the marinas. A thriving port through the Middle Ages due to vast sea salt pans which supplied the entire country, you still can visit these salt dunes today and soak in these medicinal properties. Very handsome pastel coloured homes line the streets and the old town is pretty around the fish market. Homes there are attractively tiled in those famous Portuguese Azulejos and there are some very nice examples of Art Nouveau in the town. You might want to try (or not!!) the town’s specialty of eels which are from the town’s lagoon.

Day 4. AVEIRO TO FIGEIRA DA FOZ

Ride: 35 km | Elevation Gain: 124 m A little bit harder cycling day today on your way to Lisbon with a small climb near the end of the day, but a lovely cycle nevertheless. You leave along the canal and reach the town of Mira and its quaint beachside fishing village. The fishing boats are very pretty with their curved bows, reminders of a Phoenician past and the villages along this coast was only settled in the 19th century due to piracy threats onwards from the Vikings.. The coast is long and impressive and stretches for miles here and you can have some marvellous seafood whilst you wait for your transfer to Figueira da Foz . Based on the Rio Mondego, it is a popular place for tourists due to its huge beach and has a lively atmosphere with its many outdoor plazas of cafes and restaurants.

Day 5. TO NAZARÉ

Ride: 81 km | Elevation Gain: 533 m This is a wonderful ride today (although your biggest day yet) along the sparkling Atlantic coast, and via what was the Pinhal de Leira pine forest . This  “Royal Pine Forest” track was originally built in the 14th century by King Dinis, known as the farmer king, in order to build a barrier to the encroaching beach sands. It is a nice area of wildlife and an air infused with pine and sea saltiness.  It is growing back after forest fires of years past but still a pleasant area to cycle. Today’s rolling route follows the Atlantic Road, designated cycling route, past the sentinel lighthouses through the Costa da Prata (Silver coast) to Nazaré , Portugal’s famous fishing town but one now most known for the massive waves that International surfers make their names on. Incredible views of the goliaths that come storming in, is from the upper part of town at the lighthouse overlooking the Atlantic. Try a fish dinner tonight, as it won’t come fresher than those served here.

Day 6. TO ÓBIDOS

Ride: 48 km | Elevation Gain: 460 m This is an exciting day of cycling starting along the Atlantic coast with a more touristic bent included. There is some climbing to do today but it is a charming route with beautiful vistas. You continue inland to medieval Óbidos , with a most enchanting blue and white tiled entrance, the Porta da Vila, through its solid fortified walls. The narrow winding cobbled streets lead up to the beautiful castle with its lovely rounded turrets. The village itself is delightful with flower pots spilling out of windows and bright colours on white-washed walls. In medieval times this place was so loved by the wife of King Dinis, that he gifted it to her. We hope you will feel the same way!

Day 7. LISBOA!

Get up early to wander this atmospheric place of Óbidos before your 11am transfer into the Capital city of Lisbon which rests on the Tagus river. One of Europe’s most vibrant and exciting places appealing to all with its romantic Alfama hillside district where the houses rest on top of each other in a most photogenic way and the modern day “medieval” castle tops it. The sights are many in this lovely city of World War II intrigue, medieval legends, art galleries galore and museums for everyone and without doubt, some world class food opportunities. Catch a tram over to the district of Belem and enjoy the stupendous UNESCO Heritage sites of the Jeronimos Monastery and 16th century Belem Tower the launch marker from which many Portuguese explorers left. Wander over and get a delicious Pastel de nata, cream tart, a real Portuguese favourite and perhaps visit the botanical gardens or even intriguing Carriage museum. This full day doesn’t even factor in, enjoying late night Fado music , a true cultural treat of this city!

Day 8. LISBON TO LISBON AIRPORT

We hate to say goodbye, and so will you for leaving this place really is a heartbreak. Or don’t stop and join us on our guided tour of the beautiful and traditional Alentejo area or keep self guiding all the way down the Blue Coast to the Algarve ! The choices are endless. Boa Viagem and we hope you enjoyed your trip down the West Coast!

“The end of our trip was great. We especially liked Obidos and our hotel. Our bikes worked well and were dependable. We really did enjoy the trip and we will return to Portugal in the future.” J. Palo – Oregon, USA – October 2023
“The trip was very good. The hotels and staff were all helpful. The hybrids were excellent. Pick up of goods/us all went smoothly. Good choice of hotels and a very interesting trip. Just too short! PS: The first day I discovered I had left my laptop in Porto. We had biked for about 45 minutes towards the next stop, but I turned around to go back to the hotel to get it. So my first day was not quite as relaxed as I’d hoped! Anyway at least it was a beautiful ride despite my memory loss… Thanks again for your help Maria. We’d like to do something like this again.” B. Jones – British Columbia, Canada – March 2023
“My wife and I really enjoyed our Porto to Lisbon bike tour- a great way to see Portugal’s coast and explore some great cities like Aveiro. Well organized, good equipment, and lovely hotels. We had good weather in mid-October.” T. Gainer – Portland, OR, USA – October 2021
“Amazing experience! My husband and I are back from our biking trip in Portugal with a suitcase full of wonderful memories. I would like to thank Cycling Country for the amazing organization that they provided to make our trip go as smoothly as it did. The bikes were very comfortable and in great condition (thank you for the special Dutch-style bikes – they were great!) and well equipped with emergency tools. They really thought of everything we might need along the road. The “Ride with GPS” navigation was very easy to follow and had lots of interesting tips and useful information. Also the hotels were all very nice and in great locations. In addition, the support we received before and during the trip was first class. Above all, the scenery was fantastic and the trails very varied along the coast, through beautiful parks and interesting places. I highly recommend both the trip and Cycling Country as the organizers.” E. Brager – Bethesda, MA, USA – September 2021
“Self-guided Porto to Lisbon tour – Great experience and very well organized! The selection of cities/towns and routes through Portugal’s central coast is varied and interesting. The route was not very challenging (mostly flat) and great for those who want a laid back ride, and kept us off main roads ( love not having to negotiate much car traffic!). Cycling Country was reliable, friendly and accommodating with good attention to detail. Hotels were solid, with some nice touches, like a few with spa amenities. We were especially grateful for their help with finding places for Covid tests for our return flight to the US. Our flight got canceled and they graciously made accommodations for us, much appreciated!” T. Eggers – Piedmont, CA, USA – July 2021

Not sure what to pack for your hiking vacation with Macs? Our essentials packing list will guide you.

One of the biggest differences between a Macs self-guided trip and going on your own is that we’ll transfer your luggage between destinations. That means you’ll want to pack a little differently, so you have a daypack with all your adventure essentials, and a main piece of luggage you’ll only have access to in the mornings and evenings at your accommodations.

Use this checklist to make sure you pack everything you need for your hiking trip.

Older man leaving hotel, rolling suitcase behind him

Hiking Essentials List

We recommend bringing two bags: One piece of luggage for all your overnight gear, which will be transferred between your accommodations by a local partner, and one trail-ready daypack for hiking or biking .

You can usually pack up to 44 lbs (20 kg) in your overnight bag (double-check your welcome pack to confirm). That means you have plenty of room to bring an outfit or two for nice dinners, and some extra clean layers for your hike. Always pack weather-appropriate apparel for both the trail and the town, plus extra layers in case the weather is colder, warmer, or wetter than you expect it to be.

Macs offers several different kinds of trips for every type of adventurer, and the balance of active to lifestyle garments you’ll need varies by trip. For a Classic Route or Pilgrimage , you’ll spend more time on the trail and less time in town, so you’ll probably want to bring more active layers. For an In Style or Slower Adventure , you’ll have more time to explore the towns where you’re staying, so you may want more jeans, dresses, or dinner apparel if you’re planning a special treat.

Man walking on trail with daypack, sunscreen and walking poles visible

Regardless of the balance, you’ll want to cover all the basics:

Activewear and Outerwear for Hiking

Hiking pants, leggings, and/or shorts

Wool or synthetic base layers

Wool hiking socks

Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots

Sandals or water shoes, if applicable

Lightweight and breathable underwear

Waterproof trousers

Rain jacket

Lightweight windbreaker or shell jacket

Gaiters (if hiking in a very muddy place)

Accessories and Cold-weather Gear (If Applicable)

Waterproof gloves

Neck gaiter

Man in blue shirt and shorts walking into hotel rolling suitcase behind him

Travel Essentials

International travel always requires a bit of extra legwork. As soon as you book your trip, make sure to double-check visa and vaccination requirements for your destination so that you have plenty of time to apply for documents if needed. You usually need at least six months of lead time on your passport in order to enter a foreign country. The U.S. State Department regularly updates its website with travel warnings and essential documents for the rest of the world, and you can also sign up for traveler alerts so you’ll get notified if travel restrictions or a significant weather event could impact your trip.

Don’t forget to double-check your airline’s luggage requirements to make sure you don’t miss the weight limit or cutoff time for checking a bag. Hiking poles usually need to go in your checked luggage, while electronic devices with rechargeable batteries like cameras, headlamps, e-readers, tablets, laptops, cell phones, and external battery packs need to go in your carry-on luggage.

Make sure you have:

Passport with essential visa(s)

Universal travel adapter so you can use all of your devices

Chargers for your devices

Credit card and/or debit card (ideally one that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees) to minimize exchange fees

Cash—bring a small amount in your own currency so you can convert it if necessary. You may also be able to get foreign currency from your local bank for a fee.

Toiletries—avoid single-use plastic by bringing your own essentials. Don’t forget sunscreen!

Travel insurance, in case of delays, illness, or trip cancelation

Essential Daytime Adventure Gear

During the day, you only need to carry water, snacks, sunscreen, a small first aid kit with essentials like blister plasters like Compeed or Moleskin, and your map and guidebook. You should also bring extra layers such as a light rain jacket and rain pants when necessary. Don’t forget to fully charge your phone and bring an extra battery pack so you can access the Macs app throughout your hike.

Everything else can go in your overnight bag, which will be transported to your accommodation for you.

Choosing the right daypack will depend on your trip. For shorter distances or walking through populated areas where you’ll have ample opportunities to dine out or buy snacks, a small daypack may be enough for you. If you’re hiking longer miles in a more remote area, you may want a bigger pack with a hip belt so you have space for extra layers, snacks, and more water. Scout out your route ahead of time by consulting the Macs app and your guidebook to check what options you’ll have for refreshments during the day.

Woman zipping up her daypack on the trail, walking poles visible

You may also want:

Hiking poles

Water bladder and/or reusable filtration bottle

Binoculars, if you’re into birding or wildlife spotting

A small journal or notebook for note-taking

A book or e-reader

Choosing the Right Luggage for Your Self-Guided Hiking Trip

You can pack up to 44 lbs in your overnight bag, but that doesn’t mean you have to fill it. And you probably shouldn’t—you’ll want to leave room to bring home local treats or gifts from your adventure. You also don’t want to waste an hour each morning trying to zip up an overstuffed suitcase.

Choose a piece of luggage that will easily fit all of your essentials plus a little extra. Make sure you weigh it before you leave, and that you comply with luggage restrictions for your airline, which may be different from Macs guidelines.

How to Pack Your Luggage Strategically

Packing cubes and stuff sacks can help you minimize the amount of time you spend organizing your luggage. They can also help you separate your clean and dirty clothes so your dinner outfit stays fresh and protected from any muddy hiking clothes if you get caught in the rain.

Pack your most frequently used items on top, and any just-in-case items you’re less likely to need on the bottom.

When to Start Packing

Weather can change quickly, and dramatically. You may be staring down a forecast for steady rain a week before your trip, and it could turn to sunshine just a few days prior. You may want to pack a few days before you leave, and then check the weather again the evening before departure so you can add an extra layer if needed.

Don’t forget to research your destination before you go, so you can make sure to pack appropriate clothes for events, museums, restaurants, or religious sites you want to visit.

If you need to buy new clothes or gear before you head off on your trip, do that as soon as possible so that you have time to try out your new clothes and make sure they fit comfortably. Give yourself several weeks to break in new hiking boots, and always treat hot spots with preventative blister care so you don’t ruin your trip before it even starts.

Planning in advance can help make your adventure with Macs the smoothest trip you’ve ever taken. Consider printing out this list a week before you leave to double-check you’ve got everything you need. And of course, if you have any lingering questions about what to bring—and what to leave behind—never hesitate to call or email us .
