Train travel UK & Ireland...

Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia.

It's best to buy European train tickets online , especially if you live outside Europe.  But if you live in the UK or Ireland and would prefer to book tickets by phone , this page tells you who to call depending on the journey you want to book.

Remember that if you book by phone or in person you'll normally pay a booking fee, and the agency you use may not be able to access the cheapest rates for your journey if they don't have a connection to that operator's ticketing system.

How to b uy tickets in person

In the UK, there are now hardly any places where you can buy European train tickets over the counter.  The former Rail Europe office in Piccadilly closed in 2015.  Eurostar at London St Pancras only sells tickets as far as Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam.  Most British railway stations do not sell international tickets at all except for train & ferry tickets to Ireland.  You usually need to buy online or by phone.

How to buy tickets by phone

You can buy European train tickets by phone from the agencies below, but some agencies are better for some journeys than others.

For journeys from the UK to France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal I'd call someone like Ffestiniog Travel, The Travel Bureau or Trainseurope.

For a journey to Germany, Austria, Central Europe or Scandinavia I'd call Deutsche Bahn (German Railways), as they use the German ticketing system so can access all the cheap fares within and across Germany, they charge minimal booking fees and are open weekends & evenings.

But for a more exotic journey such as London to Sofia or Istanbul it's better to call a smaller agency such as The Travel Bureau or Trainseurope even with a higher booking fee, as their staff can be more familiar with complex long-distance bookings.

Remember that European train reservations open 2, 3, 4 or sometimes 6 months before departure, you can't buy tickets before reservations open!  More about when European train bookings open .

Click the images to buy at Amazon.co.uk

Hotels in europe, backpacker hostels....

www.hostelworld.com :  If you're on a tight budget, don't forget about the backpacker hostels.  Hostelworld offers online booking of dorm beds or ultra-cheap private rooms in backpacker hostels in most European cities at rock-bottom prices.

Travel insurance & VPN

Always take out travel insurance.

You should take out travel insurance with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover from a reliable insurer.  It should cover trip cancellation and loss of cash & belongings up to a reasonable limit.  These days, check you're covered for covid-19-related issues, and use an insurer whose cover isn't invalidated by well-meant but excessive Foreign Office travel advice against non-essential travel. An annual policy is usually cheapest even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself.  Don't expect travel insurance to bail you out of every missed connection, see the advice on missed connections here .  Here are some suggested insurers, I get a little commission if you buy through these links, feedback always welcome.

UK flag

Get an eSIM with mobile data package

Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a European mobile data package and stay connected.  Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list .  There's no need to buy a physical SIM card!  Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .

Get a Curve card for foreign travel

Most banks give you a poor exchange rate then add a foreign transaction fee on top.  A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month as I write this.  The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.  And you can get a Curve card for free.

How it works:   1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android .  2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses.  3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card.  4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app.  You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.

I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader.  The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than getting a card out).  I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great.  See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.

Get a VPN for safe browsing.  Why you need a VPN

When travelling you may use free public WiFi which is often insecure.  A VPN encrypts your connection so it's always secure, even on unsecured WiFi.  It also means you can select the geographic location of the IP address you browse with, to get around geoblocking which a surprising number of websites apply.  See VPNs & why you need one explained .  ExpressVPN is a best buy with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot ranking which I use myself - I've signed up as an ExpressVPN affiliate, and if you go with expressvpn.com using this link you should see a special deal, 3 months free with an annual subscription.  I also get some commission to help support this site.

Carry an Anker powerbank

Tickets, reservations, hotel bookings and Interrail or Eurail passes are often now held on your mobile phone.  You daren't let it run out of power, and you can't always rely on the phone's internal battery or on being near a power outlet.  I always carry an Anker powerbank which can recharge my phone several times over.  Buy from Amazon.co.uk or Buy from Amazon.com .

Touring cities?  Use hill walking shoes!

One of the best things I've done is swap my normal shoes for hill-walking shoes, in my case from Scarpa.  They're intended for hiking across the Pennines not wandering around Florence, but the support and cushioning for hiking works equally well when you're on your feet all day exploring foreign cities.  My feet used to give out first and limit my day, now the rest of me gives up before they do!

  • Use a digital wallet , a digital form of your physical debit or credit card that has a unique card number different from your physical card's number
  • Find an international partner ATM and avoid the non-Bank of America ATM $5 usage fee. (Please note that the international ATM locator is not yet available on the Mobile Banking app, so when using a mobile device visit our locations page or search for "international ATMs" using your mobile browser.)
  • Order foreign currency before you travel and avoid the hassle and expense of changing money abroad
  • Book your flight, hotel, car or cruise with using the Bank of America Travel Center

Questions you may have when traveling

If your card has been lost or stolen, contact us immediately by calling collect: 315.424.4022 from outside the U.S. or 800.432.1000 domestically (Mon–Fri 7 a.m.-10 p.m. or Sat–Sun 8 a.m.-5 p.m., excluding holidays; all times ET). You can also log in to Online Banking and request a replacement card .

If your card is in your possession but is being declined or not working at an ATM, sign into Online or Mobile Banking and make sure you have sufficient funds or credit available to cover your transaction.

If your card is not working due to being blocked for suspicious or unusual activity, you may receive a text, email and/or notification when you sign into Online or Mobile Banking. Upon signing in you may be asked to verify recent activity to ensure your card information has not been compromised.

Check the network: You can use your Bank of America debit card or ATM card anywhere you see the CIRRUS symbol. In addition to CIRRUS, you can use ATMs with the MasterCard or Visa symbols. The symbol on the front of your card will indicate if your card is MasterCard or Visa.

Find the nearest MasterCard/CIRRUS ATM  layer Find the nearest Visa ATM  layer

If you're unable to use a foreign ATM, you may be able to use your debit card or ATM card to withdraw funds at a local bank.

You can calculate exchange rates for foreign currency on our website.

You can search country-specific information such as travel restrictions and public announcements issued by the U.S. government.

Some countries may require that you enter an international access code or + from any mobile phone prior to entering a country code, area code and phone number. If you are outside the U.S. and are having trouble making an international call using 1, the area code and the phone number, we suggest adding the international access code first and trying your call again. (Example: Europe’s international access code is 00 or + from a mobile phone, so to make an international call to the U.S. from Europe when an access code is required you would dial 00, 1, area code, phone number.) You can find your country's international access code using most online search engines.

9 Things America Does Better Than Europe

America vs. Europe

America has its own way of doing things, and while it gets a bad rep for some things like loving fast food too much, it also excels in other areas. In fact, many visitors from across the pond have attested to this on various Reddit and Quora threads .

Here are nine things that America does better than Europe. Do you agree?

<p>In almost every restaurant or bar in the United States, you are offered complimentary water — ice included — and it's wonderful. In most parts of Europe, though, you'll have to order water if you want it. It will most likely be bottled, and rest assured, it will appear on your check. You can get free water across the pond as well, but you have to specify that you want tap water, and that's considered very bad etiquette. No wonder European travelers love this refreshing perk in the Land of the Free ... water.</p>

<p>Europeans visiting America will notice one thing right away: There are far fewer smokers in the U.S. and far more rigid smoking regulations than in Europe. Americans have one of the <a href="https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w12124/w12124.pdf">lowest smoking rates</a> in the developed world, with 19.1% of adult Americans smoking, as opposed to 34% of Germans and 27% of the French or English. That's a big kudos to Americans.</p>

2. Lower Smoking Rates

Americans have one of the  lowest smoking rates  in the developed world, with 19.1% of adult Americans smoking, as opposed to 34% of Germans and 27% of the French or English. <p>21 years, 6 days</p>

3. National Parks

From the rugged beauty of Alaska's Denali National Park to the swampy wonderlands of Florida's Everglades, the United States is home to 63 designated National Parks. European visitors to America the Beautiful are often impressed by the National Park System and its services, knowledgeable employees, and infrastructure.

<p>America's food scene deserves applause. As a melting pot, especially in big cities like New York and Los Angeles, your taste buds can "travel" to Ethiopia, Vietnam, South Korea, Brazil, or wherever you fancy — it's like a non-stop international food festival. Despite exceptions in cities like Berlin, Brussels, Paris, and Amsterdam, the focus in Europe is often on local cuisine. Particularly in countries like Italy and Spain, there's a strong affection for their own culinary traditions, meaning international dishes sometimes receive less attention.</p>

4. Diverse Culinary Scene

America's food scene deserves applause. As a melting pot, especially in big cities like New York and Los Angeles, your taste buds can "travel" to Ethiopia, Vietnam, South Korea, Brazil, or wherever you fancy — it's like a non-stop international food festival. <p>Dressed in common civilian clothes, these sneaky officers monitor the safety and well-being of park-goers without disturbing the magic.</p>

5. Theme Parks

Theme parks in the U.S. justify the adage "Everything is bigger in America." Six Flags Magic Mountain in California features the infamous Kingda Ka, the tallest and fastest coaster in North America. Universal Studios in Florida features The Incredible Hulk Coaster, launching riders from 0 to 40 mph in a mere two seconds. In contrast, European parks generally favor smaller and more thematic experiences.

<p>Social etiquette is one of those things that people tend to roll their eyes at these days. Nobody wants to be prim and proper anymore but, unfortunately, as we’ve let go of the etiquette rules that had run their course, we’ve also stopped following the rules that made the world a little bit easier to live in. From things like putting our phones down during dinner to courteous driving, sometimes it feels like politesse is dead.</p><p>But the truth is that manners and etiquette don’t have to die a lonely, neglected death. In fact, you can start to slowly make things a little easier on yourself, your loved ones and the rest of your fellow humans by incorporating some more courtesy, respect and etiquette into your life — particularly during the holiday season. Before you know it, you’ll see others catching onto your etiquette and the rest will be history.</p><p><b><a href="https://mediafeed.org/gym-etiquette-rules-that-youre-probably-breaking/">Gym etiquette rules you're probably breaking</a></b></p>

6. Friendliness

Americans are, by far, one of the friendliest nationals in the world. That's not to say that Europeans are grouches or anything, but citizens of many European countries have a reputation for being more reserved and can potentially come across as cold.

<p>North Dakota takes the top spot with a final score of 67.9, thanks mostly to a deep satisfaction with VA services.</p><p>Total score: 67.9</p><p>VA score: 89.6</p><p>Median income for vets: $42,885</p><p>Unemployment rate for vets: 4.7%</p>

7. Accessibility for People With Disabilities

Thanks to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) , accessibility for people with disabilities in the U.S. is top-notch. From wheelchair ramps to audible traffic signals, the ADA has made significant strides in creating an inclusive environment and allowing people with disabilities to have access to public spaces, transportation, and services. Europe, while currently working on improving accessibility, faces challenges due to its historical infrastructure. The narrow streets and ancient buildings in many European cities can make accessibility upgrades more complicated.

<p>In the U.S., homes, offices, and other indoor spaces rely on air conditioning as lifelines during the dog days of summer. Across the pond, Europeans take a more stoic approach to battling the heat, with many preferring traditional methods like ancient stone buildings and the occasional desk fan that might as well be powered by hamsters.</p>

8. Central Air Conditioning

In the U.S., homes, offices, and other indoor spaces rely on air conditioning as lifelines during the dog days of summer. Across the pond, Europeans take a more stoic approach to battling the heat, with many preferring traditional methods like ancient stone buildings and the occasional desk fan that might as well be powered by hamsters.

<h2><a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/article/12-things-you-should-never-do-in-a-restaurant/ss-AAOZPVf">12 things you should never, ever do in a restaurant</a></h2>

9. Customer Service

When it comes to customer service, the difference between America and Europe can feel like night and day. In the U.S., the customer is king. Businesses often go the extra mile to make sure you leave happy, offering friendly smiles, quick service, and even the occasional freebie if things go wrong. In Europe, the emphasis isn't always on bending over backward to please the customer. You might wait longer for a waiter's attention or find returns and exchanges a bit more of a hassle.

Airbnb's customers keep complaining about the costs compared to hotels. The company seems to be listening.

  • Airbnb's customers have complained about rising costs due to extra cleaning fees.
  • The CEO addressed the pricing complaints and announced initiatives to improve the pricing structure.
  • The initiatives include a total price display, new discounts, and a price-comparing tool for hosts.

Insider Today

When Airbnb started, CEO Brian Chesky said its tagline "was a cheap, affordable alternative to a hotel" — but customers aren't finding it so cheap anymore.

Customers have complained on social media about the rising cost of Airbnb due to booking costs and cleaning fees. One user recently posted on X, formerly Twitter, that they were charged more than their stay-in cleaning fees.

"You have to clean the place yourself AND pay for cleaning fee, you've got a deal with the host one-on-one, and prices are no longer cheaper than hotels," another user posted on Reddit. "What is the actual point of Airbnb anymore?"

The CEO addressed the shifting perception of Airbnb's costs in the company's first-quarter earnings call on Wednesday and announced initiatives to improve the pricing structure.

"A year and a half ago, we noticed that, you know, there was a lot of concern about Airbnb prices increasing," Chesky said.

He said one initiative to increase transparency around prices was the added option to view the total price of a listing before taxes. Before booking, users can see the full breakdown of service fees, discounts, and taxes.

Related stories

According to Chesky, the added feature has led customers to choose the best total value.

Airbnb also created a tool for hosts to compare listings with other hosts on the site to help out people whose places just weren't getting booked. The new map gives them access to the average prices of similar booked or unbooked listings. It can be used any time a host sets or updates their price. According to the CEO, two million hosts now use the compare listing.

And it's also started to change behavior in the host community — the CEO said 300,000 of them have since removed or lowered their cleaning fees, something that users have loved to gripe about.

Chesky also said Airbnb started offering monthly and weekly discounts for guests with longer stays. The CEO said the discount options make a big difference because nearly half of the nights booked are for stays that last a week or longer. Now, over two-thirds of hosts offer a monthly or weekly discount, Chesky said.

Supply is also growing faster than demand, he said. The CEO said while hotel prices are up year-over-year, Airbnb listing prices are down from where they were a year ago.

"I think that trend line is going to continue, given all of our efforts," Chesky said.

Airbnb announced its most profitable first quarter to date on Wednesday, with 133 million nights and experiences booked and a net income of $264 million. Airbnb saw an 18% increase in revenue reaching $2.1 billion.

Second-quarter projections indicated that travel spending will slow before it peaks in the third quarter.

Axel Springer, Insider Inc.'s parent company, is an investor in Airbnb.

Strong geomagnetic storm reaches Earth, continues through weekend

NOAA space weather forecasters have observed at least seven coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun, with impacts expected to arrive on Earth as early as midday Friday, May 10, and persist through Sunday, May 12, 2024.

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Warning for Friday, May 10. Additional solar eruptions could cause geomagnetic storm conditions to persist through the weekend.

  • The First of Several CMEs reached Earth on Friday, May 10 at 12:37 pm EDT.  The CME was very strong and SWPC quickly issued a series of geomagnetic storm warnings. SWPC observed G4 conditions at 1:39 pm EDT (G3 at 1:08 pm EDT).
  • This storm is ongoing and SWPC will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional warnings as necessary.
This is an unusual and potentially historic event. Clinton Wallace , Director, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center

CMEs are explosions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun’s corona. They cause geomagnetic storms when they are directed at Earth. Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth’s surface , potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations. SWPC has notified the operators of these systems so they can take protective action.

Geomagnetic storms can also trigger spectacular displays of aurora on Earth . A severe geomagnetic storm includes the potential for aurora to be seen as far south as Alabama and Northern California.
