Senior Travel Insurance for Elderly with Pre-Existing Medical Conditions (2022)

moneysmart

Finally planning to take your parents or grandparents on holiday this year? You’ve probably got a good handle on the travel itinerary, but you might not have thought about yet is which travel insurance plan to buy for the older folks .

It matters because most insurers drastically reduce their travel insurance coverage for those 70 years old and above . That’s terrible because you want MORE medical coverage for the elderly, not less!

Finding a travel insurance plan for the elderly is a tedious affair. I had to comb through all the major insurers’ boring “summary of benefits” tables to shortlist which are the least bad.

  • Best travel insurance for senior citizens
  • NTUC travel insurance for senior citizens
  • Singlife with Aviva travel insurance for senior citizens
  • UOB travel insurance for senior citizens
  • OCBC travel insurance for senior citizens
  • Citibank DirectAsia travel insurance for senior citizens
  • Allianz travel insurance for senior citizens
  • MSIG travel insurance for senior citizens
  • Etiqa travel insurance for senior citizens

1.  Best Travel Insurance for Senior Citizens

Here are the most popular travel insurance plans and their premiums and coverage limits for senior citizens. The amounts represent coverage limits for those 70 years and above, i.e. how much you can claim.

If you pay close attention, most travel insurance policy wordings will show that they decrease coverage eg. only 60% of limit for elderly above age 70.

As you can tell from the table above, the coverage limits are lower for elderly above 70 years old. Before we deep dive into the policies, here’s a low down on what the insurance terms mean:

  • Emergency medical evacuation: In the event of an emergency, this is the cost of sending you home for treatment via an air ambulance
  • Medical expenses (overseas): Reimbursement for hospital and medical expenses overseas during your trip
  • Medical expenses (Singapore): Reimbursement for medical expenses in Singapore when you come back from your trip (within a certain time frame)

2. NTUC travel insurance for senior citizens

Since it’s probably the biggest travel insurer in Singapore, I doubt NTUC travel insurance needs any introduction. It’s a household name that most of us are very familiar with.

What’s special about NTUC is that they offer two types of plans: normal and Enhanced PreX. The latter covers pre-existing medical conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure , which is definitely a big plus for seniors.

However, it’s not a MUST to spring for PreX. In the past, before NTUC PreX came along, it was pretty much impossible to get travel insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions, so everyone just sucked it up and hoped for the best.

If you’re comfortable with that, the regular NTUC travel insurance is also worthy of consideration.

At a low price point, the cheapest Classic plan offers one of the most generous medical benefits for seniors: a $250,000 combined limit for overseas medical expenses + emergency evacuation.

NTUC travel insurance (PreX) for senior citizens

On the other hand, for elderly with existing health conditions, the NTUC Income Enhanced PreX travel insurance would be an ideal choice. This is the Basic plan which is the cheapest.

*Note that there are sub-limits for claims directly related to pre-existing conditions. This is $150,000 for adults below 70, and $100,000 for those aged 70 and up. So, although pre-existing medical conditions are covered, the actual coverage isn’t as high as it looks.

However, a thing to note is that NTUC Enhanced PreX plans are very expensive . A week’s coverage in ASEAN starts from $102 – way, way higher than the usual $30 something you’d expect to pay for regular travel insurance.

That said, NTUC is the only insurer that provides adequate coverage for seniors with medical conditions. MSIG also has a range of insurance for pre-existing conditions, but the benefits are drastically reduced for those above 70. For instance, the overseas medical coverage limit falls from $250,000 to $50,000 for those above 70. Plus, it also includes COVID-19 coverage.

For more on NTUC travel insurance promotions, claims procedure and T&Cs , read our review here.

3. Singlife with Aviva travel insurance for senior citizens

My personal favourite of the lot is Singlife with Aviva travel insurance because its medical coverage largely  does not discriminate against elderly travellers .

Check out the coverage on their cheapest plan (Lite) – there’s no difference for any of the benefits, except the personal accident payout that falls rather drastically.

In particular, I like that the local medical expenses limit is extremely high for seniors – $10,000 compared to $1,000 or $2,000 offered by other insurers.

Aviva travel insurance is also extremely affordable . If you or an immediate family member is an Aviva policyholder, you can get a 30% discount. Otherwise, they’re running a 18% off promotion for selected buyers.

For more on Aviva travel insurance promotions, claims procedure and T&Cs , read our review here.

4. UOB travel insurance for senior citizens

Although I’m really not a fan of UOB’s other products, I honestly think that UOB travel insurance is some of the best in Singapore. They  deliver excellent benefits for senior travellers on most fronts.

UOB travel insurance comes in 3 tiers Basic (cheapest), Essential (cheaper) and Preferred (premium). All plans cover anyone aged 70 and above.

Here’s a look at the coverage for UOB Insure & Travel Basic plan:

Of the 7 plans here, if you were to upgrade to UOB’s Essential plan, you would be privy to  high benefits for post-travel local medical expenses of $10,000 and $25,000 respectively for those above and below 70 , which I think is good because older folks have weaker immune systems and illnesses may linger (or even develop) after the trip. Plus, chances are they have their medical records with a local doctor they might want to seek follow-up treatment from.

For more on UOB travel insurance promotions, claims procedure and T&Cs , read our review here.

5. OCBC travel insurance for senior citizens

You might not associate OCBC with travel insurance, but it is legit because it’s provided by Great Eastern, OCBC’s insurance arm.

Their plans are also very affordable thanks to near-perpetual discounts. Here’s what the coverage for the cheapest Starter plan looks like.

*Sublimits apply for local medical expenses ($15,000 for adults under 70 / $4,500 for elderly) and TCM ($600).

My key takeaway is that, among the plans compared here, OCBC travel insurance has the highest emergency medical evacuation benefit for senior citizens. And more importantly, it is calculated separately from overseas medical expenses.

This is a travel insurance plan to consider if the medical infrastructure in your travel destination is poor, e.g. a rural/remote place. In a medical emergency, you’re more likely to be evacuated home than rushed to the nearest hospital.

OCBC also has the highest benefits for Traditional Chinese Medicine  of $600 for its cheapest Starter plan.

However, the OCBC’s cheapest Starter plan does not offer any COVID-19 coverage. You have to upgrade to the Essential and Ultimate plans for COVID-19 benefits. However, unlike NTUC and Singlife with Aviva, seniors above 70 are only covered a measly $15,000 in medical expenses while overseas. Keep scrolling!

6. Citibank DirectAsia travel insurance for senior citizens

Another bank offering surprisingly good travel insurance for senior travellers, Citibank is also worth considering if you’re in the same scenario as above – going to a place with poor/no medical care available.

Citibank is a distributor of DirectAsia’s Trip Saviour travel insurance plans. Now, we all know Direct Asia has a reputation for being budget-friendly but is its coverage up to par? In theory, you have 3 tiers to pick from, Classic, Deluxe, and Platinum.

Here’s what the coverage looks like for the cheapest Classic plan:

Note that it’s a little on the pricier side unless there’s a good promotion going on.

Unfortunately, the plans also do not include COVID-19 coverage and it’s not an optional add-on. Unless that’s a chance you’re willing to take, we’d suggest looking at other providers and what they have to offer.

For more on Citibank travel insurance promotions, claims procedure and T&Cs , read our review here.

7. Allianz travel insurance for senior citizens

Allianz isn’t quite as well-known as the other insurers here, but it’s a very established brand in Europe.

Key Features

Plans start from $28

All Plans Provide Unlimited Emergency Transportation (Includes Covid-19 Coverage)

Allianz Travel Insurance will cover you against medical costs, cancellations and curtailments due to COVID-19, or being impacted by other pandemic or epidemic, when you are diagnosed with the disease

24/7 Medical Assistance - helping you organise things like trusted medical expertise, appointments and making direct payments (to selected medical providers)

Frequent Travellers: Get covered for an unlimited number of trips with Annual Plans (up to 90 days’ duration each trip).

The Family Plan provides cover for you and the members of your family who are travelling with you on your journey. Insured persons may comprise a maximum of two adults, who need not be related. Insured persons may also include ANY number of dependents of the two named adults. Note that ALL insured persons, including dependents, must be named on the certificate of insurance.

The coverage benefits for the cheapest (Bronze) tier of travel insurance is pretty bare bones. If you’re considering Allianz as an option, you’d be better off with the Silver or Platinum plans.

Here’s the coverage for the mid-tier Silver plan:

Unlike most other insurers, the benefit limits are almost the same across all age groups except for the medical expenses incurred overseas. However, it’s important to note that the the plan does not cover pre-existing conditions and it does not cover medical expenses when you’re back in Singapore.

The redeeming quality of Allianz travel insurance is that the limits for emergency evacuation and medical expenses are separated. It’s COVID-19 coverage is also on the more generous end. Again, it’s suitable for those travelling to destinations with poor medical infrastructure.

For more on Allianz travel insurance promotions, claims procedure and T&Cs , read our review here.

8. MSIG travel insurance for senior citizens

MSIG Insurance is yet another provider born out of our friendly neighbours Malaysia, Truly Asia. It is also another provider that offers a plan for pre-existing conditions. Before getting into the Pre-Ex plan, let’s look at the  coverage for the cheapest TravelEasy Standard plan:

The MSIG TravelEasy Standard plan’s main drawback is its low coverage limit for overseas medical expenses. Comparing across the board, MSIG TravelEasy Standard plan’s coverage of $50,000 is amongst one of the lowest. The coverage for medical expenses due to COVID-19 is also nothing to shout about. However, it does have a very high $1,000,000 limit for emergency medical evacuation should your ah ma need to be airlifted back to Singapore.

MSIG travel insurance (Pre EX) for senior citizens

Let’s see how MSIG Pre-Ex policy fares:

MSIG logo

MSIG TravelEasy Pre-Ex Standard

Before your purchase MSIG’s TravelEasy Pre-Ex plan, you’ll have to answer a slew of questions about your medical history. Some of which include:

  • I am following my treating doctor’s advice. This includes not refusing or delaying any monitoring, medical appointment, medical test, medication, treatment or surgery.
  • I do not have any medical condition or symptom which I have not consulted a doctor for or for which I am waiting for medical test, medical result, diagnosis, treatment or surgery.
  • I am not required to stay in a hospital as an inpatient for more than three days in a row in the last 12 months.

On top of having proven that you’ve been attending your doctor’s appointment and taking your meds, you might still not qualify for MSIG’s TravelEasy Pre-Ex plan if you have been hospitalised for more than 3 consecutive days in the past year.

If you do decide to opt for MSIG’s TravelEasy Pre-Ex plan, note that it does not include COVID-19 coverage .

For more on MSIG travel insurance promotions, claims procedure and T&Cs , read our review here.

8. Etiqa travel insurance for senior citizens

Etiqa might not be a household name amongst Singaporeans but given its very affordable price tag, it’s worthy of looking into. Given how cheap it can be, do Etiqa’s travel insurance plans give you sufficient coverage? Let’s look at the coverage of Etiqa’s Entry plan which is the lowest tier:

In fact, even with its low prices, Etiqa’s plans are very competitive with what’s offered by the other providers in terms of its key coverages such as emergency medical evacuation and personal accident. However, with the lowest tier plan, there’s no coverage of medical expenses incurred in Singapore. Should you need follow-up treatment in Singapore, be prepared to foot the bill yourself. Otherwise, you can opt for the second or third tier plans that offer some coverage for medical expenses incurred in Singapore.

It’s also important to know that the COVID-19 plan is an optional add-on. Don’t forget to add it to your cart before you proceed to checkout.

Etiqa travel insurance (Pre Ex) for senior citizens

If you have pre-existing conditions, Etiqa also offers a plan for elderly with pre-existing conditions. Let’s take a look at the key benefits of Etiqa’s Tiq Entry plan:

Etiqa’s Tiq Pre-Ex plan does not include COVID-19 coverage. On top of that, like the non-pre ex version, the pre ex version of the Entry plan does not include any coverage for medical expenses in Singapore. If you’re fully onboard Etiqa’s travel insurance plan, you might want to top up more for each one of the higher tiers for more comprehensive coverage.

Author - Anastassia Evlanova

Senior citizens may need more comprehensive travel insurance to cover their medical needs while overseas. To help elderly travellers, our team of travel insurance experts rounded up the best travel insurance plans for seniors after analysing hundreds of data points from 80 travel insurance plans.

*Please read the important travel updates regarding COVID-19 here .

Cheapest Travel Insurance for Seniors

  • Purchase a travel policy and stand a chance to win a flight ticket to a destination of your choice

Regardless of destination and length of coverage, senior travellers who choose Etiqa, FWD or HL Assurance will get the cheapest travel insurance rates.

On the other hand, Etiqa's Tiq plans coverage is more modest with only emergency evacuation and overseas medical coverage available for the Entry plan. However, its ongoing promotions can make it a good option for seniors who are focused on price and are healthy enough to not require high levels of medical coverage. This is especially true for active seniors who also like to go on hikes and do sports while vacationing since Tiq covers adventurous activities. You can also choose to get pre-ex coverage if you are willing to pay the S$60 extra dollars (1-week coverage).

FWD offers more comprehensive medical coverage than Etiqa, with S$40,000 medical expense coverage and S$2,000 of domestic medical coverage for seniors over 70 and costs around S$10 more than Etiqa for a one-week trip. However, it is important to remember that looking at price alone is not a determinant of a good plan. If you are travelling to a country with expensive healthcare, it is better to spend a little more but get better coverage than be stuck with a costly medical bill.

If you are interested in protecting your trip itinerary, HL Assurance offers above average trip cancellation and delay coverage out of its peers and it offers the highest medical expense coverage out of the three, with S$50,000 of coverage. However, it is one of the more pricier options out of the 3 for annual plans, costing S$187 for an annual ASEAN plan.

Etiqa Tiq Travel Insurance

Best Value Travel Insurance for Seniors

  • Direct Asia: 40% off all plans + S$30 Prudential Gift Voucher

If you want to gain the most from your travel insurance, high value plans like Aviva, Direct Asia, Income and Allianz Travel offer the most coverage per dollar of premium for seniors due to their generous medical coverage and solid trip inconvenience coverage. Aviva Plus, Direct Asia 500 and Allianz Silver, specifically, offer competitive pricing that is below average with premiums that are 15-40% below their peers. At the same time, they offer above average medical expense coverage and trip inconvenience coverage.

Direct Asia is a good option if you are on a tight budget but you are still looking for more coverage than what typical budget travel insurance plans offer. The 500 plan is a top-tier plan that provides generous trip inconvenience coverage and can be a good option for multigenerational families since kids are covered for free and grandparents receive fairly generous coverage thanks to DirectAsia's already high coverage limits.

Aviva and Income (not the Pre-X plans) are good options for active or medically-focused senior travellers due to Aviva's flexible cancellation policies and Income's high medical benefits. For travellers looking for a high value budget plan, Income Classic offers the highest value out of budget-tiered plans. It is affordable and provides coverage limits high enough for the over 70 to compete with mid and even top-tier plans. In the same vein, Aviva is a high level mid-tier plan that offers very generous limits for medical coverage (the highest on the market for seniors over 70 years of age).

Allianz Travel is a good option for travel inconvenience coverage as it offers up to S$15,000 of trip cancellation coverage and S$12,000 of baggage loss coverage and can work for seniors who travel with expensive belongings.

Singlife with Aviva

Best Medical Coverage Travel Insurance

Most travel insurance companies cut coverage if you or someone you are insuring is over the age of 70. However, Aviva and Income have some of the most lenient coverages when it comes to medical claims.

If you are on a tight budget but still want a plan that provides ample medical coverage, Aviva is a clear winner as it doesn't cut domestic medical, international medical and personal accident coverage for elderly policyholders. It also offers a variety of medical benefits including dental expenses, emergency telephone expenses, quarantine and hospital visit expenses.

If you are travelling with pre-existing conditions, Income's Pre-X is one of the three insurers who will let you claim for medical expenses arising from your pre-existing conditions. Its Pre-X plans let you claim for medical expenses due to your pre-existing condition while abroad and continue treatment once back home in Singapore. You can also claim your medical expenses either under travel inconvenience (i.e. you had to cancel your trip due to a pre-existing condition), although that comes with a 50% co-payment. Lastly, you'll receive other benefits like travel agency insolvency, repatriation and missed connections coverage. However, you should note that annual Pre-X policies can only be purchased over the phone.

Most travel insurance companies cut coverage if you or someone you are insuring is over the age of 70. However, Aviva and NTUC have some of the most lenient coverages when it comes to medical claims.

Best Trip Inconvenience Coverage

If you are looking for maximum peace of mind regarding your itinerary and baggage, Allianz and Aviva's travel insurance plans may be a great fit.

If your budget is not restricted, Allianz Travel's Gold plan offers the highest trip inconvenience coverage on the market with S$25,000 of trip cancellation coverage, S$1,500 trip delay coverage and S$15,000 of baggage loss/damage coverage. If you are willing to sacrifice some of the limits in exchange for more affordable prices, you can opt for Allianz's Silver plan. It is still a very solid plan with S$12,000 of baggage loss or damage coverage, S$15,000 of trip cancellation, and S$15,000 of trip postponement coverage.

If you care more about flexibility rather than coverage amounts, Aviva's Prestige and Plus travel insurance plans are great choices as they let you cancel your trip or change your travel dates for any reason and offers up to S$8,000 of baggage loss and S$3,000 of theft coverage. To get the best value, we recommend you look at the Prestige plan, as it costs below average for top-tier plans. However, regardless of the plan, Aviva is quite expensive so it may not be the best fit for travellers on a tight budget.

Travel & COVID-19 Updates

As of June 15, 2020, all Singaporeans are advised to avoid travel. Several countries are experience increasing rates of infection and may be risky for travel. However, there is an exception for essential business and official travel operating under the Green/Fast Lane arrangements. Furthermore, please note that if you are planning a trip and have recently bought a travel insurance policy, you may not be eligible for claims related to Covid-19. Furthermore, upon return to Singapore, you will be require to serve a mandatory Stay-Home Notice (SHN) as well as a test.

Please note as of July 19th, 2020, travellers who stayed the past 14 days in Australia (besides Victoria), Brunei Darussalam, Macao SAR, mainland China, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam no longer need to serve their SHN at an SHN Dedicated Facility. Instead, Singaporean citizens and permanent residents can serve their 14 day SHN at home. To learn more please click here .

Methodology

To find the best travel insurance plans for seniors, we analysed pricing and coverage from over 100 different travel insurance plans. We took into consideration medical coverage for seniors who are over 70, whether there were any benefits that were excluded for seniors over a certain age as well as trip cancellation benefits. We also looked into plans that offered pre-existing conditions, since there is a higher chance that this segment of travellers will want coverage for ongoing medical conditions. Lastly, we looked at price. Since senior travellers may be retired and without a steady income stream, we wanted to find plans that were affordable in addition to providing useful benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can purchase some travel insurance plans (but not all) if you're older than 80 years old. However, your premiums may be higher and you'll typically qualify for lower coverage limits overall. Make sure you compare the best travel insurance plans for seniors to find the right fit for your needs.

Since seniors and retirees are more likely to face a medical emergency during a trip, most travel insurance plans for seniors include coverage for emergency medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation. Coverages vary among plans, as do limits, so make sure to compare options before you book a trip overseas.

Tips for Senior Travelers in Singapore

In Singapore, you'll find very few hotels that offer senior citizen discounts; however, every attraction with an entrance fee offers a special discounted rate, and some tour companies will quote you a better rate as well. Be warned that in Singapore you're considered a senior citizen at the age of 55 -- you either love it or hate it!

Upon request, the STB can also help plan your trip and can offer its own advice for senior travelers. Regarding this service, here's my advice: If you work out your itinerary with the help of STB, make sure you're firm about time constraints. Many of the tours and daily itineraries are rushed, with little time for a rest here and there. A common complaint is exhaustion by the end of just 1 day. In the heat, this is not only uncomfortable, but dangerous as well.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Travel Insurance ‘Will Likely’ Cover Injuries Sustained in Singapore Airlines Incident: ABI

senior citizen travel insurance singapore

Travel insurance policies “will likely” cover injuries sustained by aircraft turbulence, but policies may vary, the Association Of British Insurers said following the Singapore Airlines SIAL.SI incident on Tuesday.

One passenger died of a suspected heart attack, and 30 were injured after a Singapore Airlines flight hit severe turbulence on Tuesday, flinging passengers and crew around the cabin and forcing the plane to land in Bangkok, officials and the airline said.

The primary purpose of travel insurance is to cover the costs of emergency medical treatments or repatriation should the worst happen, the ABI said.

Compensation for Injured Passengers on Singapore Airlines Could Vary Dramatically

Most travel insurance policies also cover medical repatriation, where necessary, or an alternative flight home if passengers are fit and able.

“If you’re injured because of turbulence on a flight, as with other emergency medical needs, your travel insurance will likely apply in the usual way. Policies may vary, so it’s important to check the details of what you’re covered for …” a spokesperson for ABI said on Wednesday.

Twenty people onboard the flight are currently under treatment in intensive care facilities, Bangkok’s Samitivej Hospital said in a statement on Wednesday.

The flight from London and bound for Singapore fell into an air pocket while cabin crew were serving breakfast before it encountered turbulence, prompting the pilots to request an emergency landing, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport general manager Kittipong Kittikachorn told a press conference.

Ex Baltimore top-prosecutor Marilyn Mosby sentencing hearing for perjury, fraud begins

senior citizen travel insurance singapore

Baltimore's former top prosecutor is set be sentenced on perjury and mortgage fraud convictions after jurors in two separate trials determined she lied about financial hardship during the pandemic to access money from the city and buy a Florida vacation home.

Marilyn Mosby, 44, is slated to appear before a federal judge Thursday for the start of a sentencing hearing after being found guilty of two counts of perjury following a four-day November trial.

During a second trial in February, she was found guilty of making a false mortgage application when she was Baltimore City State’s Attorney, relating to the purchase of a condominium in Long Boat Key, Florida. The jury acquitted Mosby of making a false mortgage application related to her purchase of a home in Kissimmee, Florida.

Mosby garnered national attention nearly a decade ago when she charged six Baltimore police officers in connection to the death of Freddie Gray. A Black man, Gray, 25, died in police custody in April 2015 a week after he suffered a severe spinal injury while traveling without a seatbelt in the back of a van on the way to the police station.

Marilyn Mosby's November verdict for perjury

During the fall trial, jurors determined in May and December of 2020 , Mosby submitted “Coronavirus-Related Distribution Requests” for one-time withdrawals of $40,000 and $50,000 from City of Baltimore’s Deferred Compensation Plan.

According to evidence presented at trial, Mosby lied about meeting at least one of the qualifications for a distribution, claiming she experienced financial hardship from the coronavirus "as a result of being quarantined, furloughed, or laid off; having reduced work hours; being unable to work due to lack of childcare; or the closing or reduction of hours of a business she owned or operated."

In the end, jurors found Mosby did not experience financial adversity and received her full gross salary of nearly $248,000 from Jan. 1-Dec. 29, 2020.

Mosby faces up to five years in prison for each count of perjury in that case, prosecutors said.

Marilyn Mosby's February mortgage fraud verdict

According to evidence presented at trial, Mosby lied on an application for a $428,400 mortgage to buy a condo in Long Boat Key in February 2021. In the application, Mosby falsely stated she received a $5,000 gift from her husband to be applied to the purchase of the property.

Mosby did it to secure a lower interest rate, jurors found, and determined she did not receive a gift from her husband, but instead transferred the $5,000 to him and he transferred it back to her.

Mosby faces up to 30 years in prison for the felony charge in that case.

Mosby lost top prosecutor job in 2022

Mosby, who served as the state's attorney for Baltimore from 2015 to 2023, lost the Democratic primary for the job in 2022 to Ivan Bates , sworn in as the 26th State’s Attorney for the city in January 2023.

United States Attorney for the District of Maryland  Erek L. Barron released in a statement following the February trial: "We humbly respect the court’s considered rulings, opposing counsels’ zealous advocacy, and the wisdom of both jury verdicts in this case and we remain focused on our mission to uphold the rule of law."

“Ms. Mosby’s conduct undermines the confidence the public deserves to have in their government officials," FBI's Baltimore Field Office Special Agent R. Joseph Rothrock said.
