The 17 best live music venues in Amsterdam (from a local)

It's music to our ears 🎶

Julia de Oliveira Moritz

Live music venues in Amsterdam are everywhere, and there’s one of every kind: big, small, famous, underground. But how can you know where to go?

Well, we have the ultimate list for all your live music needs — from old Irish sea shanties to full-on raves.

I’ve lived in Amsterdam for the past five years, and I’ve spent my time scoping out the best of the best music venues. Here are my favourites.

1. Paradiso: Heavenly music

paradiso-music-venue-amsterdam-concert-with-lights-and-big-windows-man-playing-guitar-onstage-in-front-of-crowd

We had to start with a city staple. Paradiso is bang on the famous Leidseplein and is home to all types of music. Whether you love DJs or intimate acoustic shows, Paradiso has it all.

This classic Amsterdam venue used to be a church, and the big windows still give off that vibe. The place doubles as a concert venue or just a club. Either way, you’ll feel like you’ve ascended into heaven.

Address: Weteringschans 6-8, 1017 SG Amsterdam

2. Melkweg: A local classic

photo-of-amsterdam-music-venue-melkweg-at-sunset-outside-main-entraince

Just a hop and a skip away from Paradiso; you have Melkweg . This music venue is more modern than its godly neighbour and has a similar intimate feel to it — despite being able to hold 1500 people.

Amsterdam’s Melkweg hosts everything from club events to full-on concerts, and all are worth checking out.

Plus, it’s a top venue to check out rising artists before they rise to the arena-show level.

Address: Lijnbaansgracht 234A, 1017 PH Amsterdam

3. Mulligans Irish Music Bar: The oldest Irish pub in Amsterdam

View this post on Instagram A post shared by FAGAN’S (@faganssheffield)

This tiny, cluttered, warm, cosy, loving, lively pub dates back to 1913. The current owner (Miriam, who you can find behind the bar or in her designated spot with a glass of white wine) has owned Mulligans for over 30 years.

Twice a week, local Amsterdam musicians from around the city gather around a table and play old-school Irish music. There are few things like it, and many Irish guests confirm it feels like a slice of home.

Address: Amstel 100, 1017 AC Amsterdam

4. Bitterzoet: Hiding right under your nose

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bitterzoet Amsterdam (@bitterzoet)

I’ll admit it: I only realised where this music venue was after I had lived in Amsterdam for years. It hides in plain sight, just 500 metres from Amsterdam Central Station.

Bitterzoet is another small venue where you can enjoy some great up-and-coming live music. Local and international artists alike will put on a great show here, and you can catch them before they’ve made it to the big leagues.

Address: Spuistraat 2 HS, 1012 TS Amsterdam

5. Café Soundgarden: For all the old-school folks

4. cafe soundgarden, only the best of the best bars in amsterdam, fight me on this pic.twitter.com/muQ7Dk2CkB — alina latinina (@alinalatinina) May 2, 2023

Café Soundgarden has something for everyone. Comfy leather couches, tables by the water, a pool table, a pinball machine, and a foosball table. And let’s not forget the most important part: live music every Thursday.

You can sit in this bar for hours, chatting with your friends or the friendly staff. It has so many entertainment options — from games to gigs — and still keeps that laid-back vibe.

Address: Marnixstraat 164 – 166, Amsterdam 1016 TG

6. The Waterhole: A classic, timeless staple

The Waterhole in Amsterdam is in full swing! Parallel universe! pic.twitter.com/6SH8sc1Hdh — Fiona Madigan (@FMcACork) October 1, 2021

The Waterhole is the Amsterdam venue for unplugged live music. Local musicians bring their guitars and belt their voices out into the cosy space.

And you can enjoy the music with cheap drinks for a long, long time. Why? Because this place has a happy hour for NINE straight hours.

Address: Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 49, 1017 PW Amsterdam

7. Pllek: Ideal in the summer

People-sitting-in-sand-at-NDSM-wharf-in-amsterdam-good-spot-to-cycle

For this one, you’ll need to get to Amsterdam Noord — which has a lot of gems of its own! Pllek specifically will feel like a day at the beach. The sandy area right by the water outside is perfect on a sunny day.

Do you like DJs? They’ve got them! How about laid-back acoustics? Done! This venue boasts all genres of live music, welcoming Amsterdammers of all ages. Plus, it’s one of the few venues in Amsterdam that resembles a tropical getaway.

Address: T.T. Neveritaweg 59, 1033 WB Amsterdam

8. OT301: For all the club heads

amsterdam-music-venue-ot301-main-entrance

Now, this music venue does kind of look like you shouldn’t be going there because it doesn’t really have the world’s most welcoming front door. But trust us, it’s a good time. OT301 is a space for the arts, politics, and subculture.

If your live music preference is usually a performer with a guitar onstage, maybe skip this venue. It focuses more on DJ sets than acoustic sets. But for electronic music lovers, this is the place to be!

Address: Overtoom 301, 1054 HW Amsterdam

9. Bourbon Street: Live blues every night

amsterdam-music-venue-bourbon-street-men-dancing-on-roof-on-sunny-day

If you want a reliable venue with live music every single night, then head over to Bourbon Street . The music is always good, and chances are you can befriend the bands too! There’s no backstage, so musicians will be in the crowd with you when they finish playing.

It’s not the biggest live music venue in the world, but it’s got plenty of space to boogie to the sweet, old-school tunes of the performers. 🕺

Address: Leidsekruisstraat 6-8, 1017 RH Amsterdam

10. Hannekes Boom: Colourful, cosy, comfortable

amsterdam-music-venue-hannekes-boom-outside-area-at-night-with-string-lights

Another canal-side live music spot with a spacious interior, Hannekes Boom is just a 10-minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal.

As someone who has been there during a storm, I can confirm: rain or shine, this place is gezellig . They’ve got yummy food, tasty drinks, and, of course, all kinds of live music. Perfect for a chill night out!

Address: Dijksgracht 4, 1019 BS Amsterdam

11. Jazz Café Alto: you can do jazz hands all night long

@milanovinoah Have you ever been to a Jazz Cafe?🎺 #jazz #music #amsterdam ♬ original sound – noahmilanovi

This music venue doesn’t mess around. Every night since 1953, Jazz Café Alto has hosted live jazz jams.

Who’s welcome? Everyone! Surround yourself with photos of iconic musicians and let yourself be inspired by the local jazz music scene. You’ll leave wanting to play the saxophone.

Address: Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 115, 1017 PX Amsterdam

12. Tolhuistuin: for artists of all kinds

amsterdam-music-venue-tolhuistuin-art-centre-garden-on-a-sunny-day

Tolhuistuin is a melting pot for all things art. The venue has everything from live music to full-on political debates. Because it’s dedicated to all types of art, it’s also got all types of music — from established art rap performers to low-key string sessions.

The venue is in Amsterdam Noord, and it’s a gorgeous garden to watch some local Amsterdam live music. It’s open daily, so just stop by and see what’s happening!

Address: IJpromenade 2, 1031 KT Amsterdam

13. A’DAM TOWER: A drink with a view

amsterdam-music-venue-adam-tower-amsterdam-noord-building-on-sunset-view-from-amsterdam-centraal

Amsterdam’s very own A’DAM TOWER hosts DJs and live acts alike, but where it really shines is the 360º view of the entire city of Amsterdam.

Usually, this venue hosts planned events, so you probably need tickets beforehand (as opposed to a lot of these other music venues, where you can just rock up). But there is live music every Friday and Saturday, so you’ll never have a dull weekend again!

Address: Overhoeksplein 1, 1031 KS Amsterdam

14. Toekomstmuziek: Feels like a (house) party every day

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Warm Bad (@warm.bad.amsterdam)

Walking around Toekomstmuziek feels like an old house one second and an old warehouse another. But one thing is clear: the venue has got some really great DJs. (Sometimes, even with some hypnotic dance performances.)

It has a very “Amsterdam” feel to it: an industrial, gezellig inside area to enjoy the live music and a cute, quirky garden to catch some fresh air or have a chat with your buddies.

Address: Danzigerbocht 29, 1013 AM Amsterdam

15. Radio Radio: The best DJ sets

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Travis Allen (@travisxallen)

Radio Radio is the place to be if you’re looking for a straightforward club with an overall easy vibe and reliably banging DJs.

Located at Amsterdam’s Westerpark, you can enjoy a day in nature and end the night by dancing to some live sets in this exciting, youthful-in-nature venue. What more could you want?

Address: Pazzanistraat 3, 1014 DB Amsterdam

16. Bierfabriek: Live music and artsy beers (for cheap)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bierfabriek Amsterdam (@bierfabriekamsterdam)

Your dad (and you!) will love this venue. But let’s be real: acoustic live music and artisanal beers are for everyone — and so is Bierfabriek .

This venue is right behind Amsterdam’s bustling Rokin, with some pretty exciting local live music. Best of all, you’ll get delicious food and a cheap litre of beer while you enjoy the tunes. Proost! 🍻

Address: Nes 67, 1012 KD Amsterdam

17. ‘Skek: A nonprofit pub for the people

View this post on Instagram A post shared by 'Skek Amsterdam (@eetcafeskek)

If you know the Kriterion bar across the street from the University of Amsterdam, it’s time to check out its little brother. ‘Skek was started by a group of five Amsterdam students in 2006 who used to work at Kriterion.

Now, ‘Skek hosts events multiple times per week. Their DIY ethos translates into their music taste, hosting local punk bands and live music workshops. But if you’re a theatre kid, they’ve got your back, too, because they aren’t strangers to a cabaret performance.

Address: Zeedijk 4-8, 1012 AX Amsterdam

The live music scene in Amsterdam

The live music scene in Amsterdam is exciting, eccentric, and welcoming to established and rising artists.

photo-of-mic-and-music-gear-onstage-with-smoke-and-lights-in-a-dark-room-live-music-gig

Although the DJ and electronic music scene seems to be dominating the zeitgeist currently, there is still a massive variety of genres.

Maybe electronic events are easier to find, but these music venues in Amsterdam will definitely give you something to scratch every live music itch.

READ MORE | Amsterdam Noord: How to explore the city’s coolest suburb

Amsterdam is a very creative city, so these places aren’t just good for music. It attracts many people, so you always have the best conversations. Whether with the musicians or other audience members, it’s always easy to make a new friend.

Plus, there’s the added benefit of it being a major city, so pretty much every artist will have a show there! Especially the rising artists, who usually play in Amsterdam’s local bars rather than big arenas or festivals.

How to find the best live music venues in Amsterdam

The thing that everyone says about Amsterdam is that there’s always something happening. And it’s true. While this list covers some favourites, chances are you’ll stumble into a bar (no pun intended), and someone will be playing music.

There is no secret to finding the best live music in Amsterdam (other than hanging out at these venues, of course).

paris-texas-performing-at-amsterdam-music-venue-bitterzoet

The best way is to just go to events, talk to artists, follow Amsterdam-based creative collectives on Instagram and see what they’re up to. The most exciting things are usually discovered through word of mouth.

Once you get in touch with the local creative culture, a whole new world will open up to you, and you’ll only find more exciting things from there.

Coldplay: Music Of The Spheres World Tour

Saturday July 15 2023

The morning after the band celebrated six sold out nights in Wembley Stadium in London, Coldplay announced many more European stadium concerts for their Music Of The Spheres World Tour in summer 2023. With dates for the first shows in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and The Netherlands, and shows in the British cities Manchester and Cardiff.

Sinds the band started the record breaking tour in March 2022 in Costa Rica, more than four million tickets for their shows in Latin America, the United States and Europe, that have gotten amazing reviews from both fans and critics; the previously mentioned Wembley shows were no exception.

Groundbreaking sustainable initiatives

The tour was also praised by its groundbreaking sustainable initiatives, such as creating a show that is powered by almost 100% sustainable energy at almost every venue, the first tour worthy batterysystem on Earth (made of 40 electric BMW carbatteries), electric bikes and kinetic dance floors to make fans help create the energy for the concert, solar panels and wind turbines at every venue, a promise to reduce emissions by 50% on their tour, initiatives to motivate fans to travel with green transport and planting one tree for every ticket sold. Want to know more? Head to sustainability.coldplay.com .

Due to special effects, the roof of the Johan Cruijff ArenA will be opened during the Coldplay shows. We recommend keeping an eye on the latest weather forecast to ensure you know what to wear. Think about bringing a cap and applying enough suncream when it’s sunny, or wearing a raincoat if rain is predicted. Umbrella's are not allowed in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. For a complete list of what is allowed in the stadium, please visit the website of Mojo .

Want to check if you can still acquire tickets? The ticket sale happens through Ticketmaster .

If you are unable to book the tour of your choice on a specific day or time, it may be that it is completely sold out or that there are no tours due to an event taking place on this day.

If you are really unable to attend, we can adjust the date and time. You can send an Email and share your booking details with us. We will send you the new tickets by Email: [email protected] .

We send the tickets via the Close app, after downloading the app your tickets are visible.

You will receive a lot of information related to your visit via the Close app, and your ticket will be visible in the app. You can also use the app during your Stadium Tour and receive great offers afterwards and view your free digital photo there. This ensures that your experience will be even better.

During the tour we use escalators. We use stairs towards the field and to the press stand.

The Classic Tour is always without a guide. Do you prefer a stadium tour with a guide? You can book the Guided Tour or the VIP Tour.

You can get off at Station Bijlmer ArenA, from there you can easily walk to the stadium. You can also use Wizzymaps which is visible in the Close app.

You can park in P1 (the Transferium), under the stadium. From there you walk towards main entrance E where the Stadium Tours start.

During the tour we make frequent use of Escalators/stairs . We would therefore like to ask you to contact us after your booking so we can schedule a guide for you. This can be done by sending an Email to [email protected] .

You walk independently through the stadium along all highlights, along the way there are guides who will tell you everything about the spaces. You can ask them any questions, or have a small chat, they want you to have the best Experience in the Stadium and are always there for you.

During the tour, taking photos and videos is allowed, only with your phone or a small handheld camera. Large cameras are not allowed in the stadium.

The dressing room of Ajax is not always available. Like on Ajax match days, the players make use of this space. Also on match days that Ajax plays away, the dressing room cannot be accessible.

You should bring your own wheelchair, we only facilitate this for emergencies.

At the end of the Stadium Tour you will see all the prizes that Ajax has won, you can take your time for this and then walk to the fan shop.

This is not possible, because we use escalators and stairs during the tour. Also it is not allowed to take a buggy into the stadium due to safety rules.

After downloading the Close app you receive a link, you can view the photos at the link. You can also check this link here for your photos.

We offer different Stadium Tours. In the Webshop you can see all products that we currently offer. The most common tour is the Classic Tour. The VIP Tour is an exclusive tour with only 12 places.

A VIP Tour lasts 2 hours, including a drink in the skybox to relax.

You can certainly come along, because children are not allowed to follow the Stadium Tour independently.

The Kidstour is only given in Dutch.

The VIP Tour has room for 12 people, so we keep the tour exclusive.

The VIP Tour has room for 12 people, so we keep the Tour exclusive.

Look carefully at the timeslot of your ticket and where you are going first. The timeslots are on your E-ticket and the tickets will be scanned at the entry.

10 Best Live Music Spots In Amsterdam

music tours in amsterdam

As an entertainment mecca, Amsterdam certainly has an extensive variety of clubs, bars and concert halls where music can be heard. With everything from house, hip-hop, jazz and classical music on the menu, the city draws in culture fans from far and wide. Here are some must-try spots for live music lovers in the Dam.

Ane Brun, Melkweg

Building, Cinema, Music Venue, Theater

Melkweg is much more than a music venue; it is a non-profit culture center for cinema, theater, dance and art near Amsterdam’s Leidseplein . The venue’s name, meaning “Milky Way” in English, is quite appropriate, as the building was a milk factory until the late 1960s. All kinds of great music can be heard here, although hip-hop and electronica have dominated Melkweg’s bookings in recent years.

Melkweg, Linjbaansgracht 234A, 1017 PH Amsterdam, Netherlands, +31 20 531-8181

2. CC Muziekcafé

Cc muziekcafé.

Everything and anything can be heard playing at CC Muziekcafé , a new music pub in the de Pijp neighborhood of Amsterdam . Here, anyone is welcome within the cozy space, where the blending of local and global sounds compliments the bar’s inviting appeal. A wide variety of styles can be found here, but unlike other music venues in Amsterdam, CC Muziekcafé has an open mic regularly on the stage.

CC Muziekcafé, Rustenburgerstraat 384,1072 HG Amsterdam, Netherlands, +31 6 24236956

3. Chicago Social Club

Chicago social club.

For travelers wanting that half-club-half-lounge feel in their next venture into Amsterdam’s nightlife, Chicago Social Club is the place to go. With a bar open until 4 a.m. every night, and a club open three nights a week, the Chicago Social Club has quickly become a great scene in the Leidsesquare. With many corners to relax in, a booming dance floor and an outdoor balcony to get some fresh air, this club is a great choice for a casual night out of dancing.

Chicago Social Club, Leidseplein 12, 1017 PT Amsterdam, Netherlands, +31 20 760-1171

 Bimhuis

As a founding member of the Europe Jazz Network , Bimhuis is the venue in Amsterdam for all improvised music. From a distance, Bimhuis looks little more than the black box of the Muziekgebouw complex, being redesigned in 2005 from its original state as founded in 1974. With funding from both the city of Amsterdam and the European Union, this venue is incredibly important for the genre of jazz in Amsterdam today however, and also a recognized international cultural institution.

Bimhuis, Piet Heinkade 3, 1019 BR Amsterdam, Netherlands, +31 20 788 2150

5. Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ

Muziekgebouw aan’t ij.

The elegant, all-glass architecture of Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ is telling of the contemporary classical music played here. Travelers don’t need to go far to find this venue, being a 10-minute walk from the Amsterdam Centraal Station. The Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ plays host to a variety of ensembles, including small chamber groups, large orchestras and everything in between.

Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ, Piet Heinkade 1, 1019 BR Amsterdam, Netherlands, +31 20 788-2000

OCCII

Become a Culture Tripper!

Sign up to our newsletter to save up to $1,665 on our unique trips..

See privacy policy .

OCCII is perhaps the most independent concert venue in the Dam, being completely run by volunteers. Featuring the best of Europe’s underground and radical music acts, this venue has made a real name for itself running on little but the trust of its volunteers. So far, this business plan has worked, even during the building’s renovation. The folk at OCII also often tour Amsterdam’s various other venues and clubs whenever their own venue is undergoing maintenance.

OCCII, Amstelveenseweg 134, 1075 Amsterdam, Netherlands, +31 20 671-7778

7. Paradiso

Music Venue

Paradiso is the place to go for live acts

8. Schaakcafé Het Hok

Schaakcafé het hok.

Schaakcafé Het Hok has a great neighborhood pub atmosphere that few other music venues can match. This brick, corner pub is completely vintage in design, with its friendly outdoor seating arrangement, paneled windows and its clutter of posters and memorabilia. Live acoustic sets pair nicely with Het Hok’s food, being just loud enough to still be able to hear everyone sitting at your table.

Schaakcafé Het Hok, Lange Leidsedwarsstraat 134, 1017 NN Amsterdam, Netherlands, +31 20 624-3133

Maloe Melo

9. Maloe Melo

The blues are easy to find in Amsterdam, and are served straight, no chaser, at Maloe Melo . With live music every night of the week, and bar service open late, all music lovers passing through the Dutch capital are recommended to visit this Amsterdam landmark.

Maloe Melo, Lijnbaansgracht 163, 1016 VX Amsterdam, Netherlands, +31 20 420 4592

10. North Sea Jazz Club

North sea jazz club.

With its dim, cabaret seating, North Sea Jazz Club is one of the most legendary venues to enjoy a jazz show in Europe. With legends like Victor Wooten, and newcomers like Taylor McFarrin, the North Sea Jazz Club definitely gets the publicity it deserves. Its resident band, The Fresh Cuts, are also a formidable troupe in their own right, and inspire the club’s patrons to dance every night.

North Sea Jazz Club, Pazzanistraat 1, 1014 DB Amsterdam, Netherlands, +31 20 722-0980

Our House Amsterdam reviews

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “I was really surprised at the level of depth this museum had and I definitely felt that my money was well spent for admission. This is a full working house venue with a museum added on. I was most impressed with the final audio/visual presentation complete with shaking bass floors, smoke and laser displays. The world's largest sequencer and related demonstration from an experienced DJ was also very cool. I appreciated the lessons on how to be a DJ and the bar where you can purchase drinks while walking around.” - Google user

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Great experience for electronic music fans. Real interactive museum where you can create your own music, spin on the wheels or just dance on all kinds of house classics.” - Google user

The 21 best free things to do in Amsterdam

Mar 13, 2024 • 7 min read

Amsterdam architecture over the tulips.

Admiring the incredible gardens and architecture of Amsterdam doesn't cost a cent © Vladislav Zolotov / Getty Images © © Vladislav Zolotov/Getty Images

With its Golden Age canals, treasure-filled museums and cutting-edge art, entertainment and design scenes,  Amsterdam is one of Europe's jewels, but it can be pricey.

Fortunately, you can find a surprising number of freebies, from art galleries to architecture and concerts in the  Netherlands ' capital, if you know where to look. These are the best free things to do in Amsterdam.

Canal in the city of Amsterdam with boats moored

1. Wander through the "living museum" of Amsterdam's Canal Ring

Roaming along the canals flowing through central Amsterdam (the city has more than Venice ) is like being let loose in an open-air museum. A feat of engineering from the Dutch Golden Age, lined by tilting, gabled canal houses and spanned by quaint hump-back bridges, Amsterdam's 400-year-old waterways are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Planning tip: For the quintessential "seven bridges" snap, stand on the Herengracht in front of the Thorbeckeplein, looking down the Reguliersgracht. You can actually count 15 bridges in all directions. It's especially pretty at night.

The interior of one of the shipyards at Amsterdam's NDSM-werf. where a giant red Lego brick is on display amongst the shipping containers

2. Watch artists create in former shipyard studios

In the up-and-coming, post-industrial neighborhood Amsterdam Noord, former shipbuilding warehouse  NDSM Loods now contains more than 80 studios, where upwards of 250 artists unleash their imaginations. Exhibitions are displayed beneath the hangar's girders in its gallery space, NDSM Fuse.

Planning tip: Set aside at least a couple of hours to walk or cycle through the vast site. Free passenger ferries cross the IJ river from Amsterdam’s Centraal Station (you can take bikes on board for free).

3. Marvel at millennia-old archaeological finds in a metro station

Objects dating back as far as 2400 BCE were unearthed when the Noord/Zuidlijn metro line was dug beneath Amsterdam’s streets and waterways – among them medieval ice skates, Golden Age pottery, 19th-century pocket watches and buttons and 20th-century tech, such as early mobile phones. They're now displayed in glass cases at Rokin metro station's exhibit  Below the Surface .

Planning tip: It's worth hopping on or off the metro at Rokin, a short walk from Amsterdam Centraal station, to see the displays (you'll need a transport ticket to access the station).

4. Ramble between rose bushes, hedges and elegant statues at the Rijksmuseum

An Amsterdam secret – unknown even to many locals – is that the Renaissance and baroque gardens of its premier museum, the  Rijksmuseum , are free and open to the public, along with occasional sculpture exhibitions held amid the greenery.

Science Center NEMO - largest childrens science educational museum, knowledge institute and center of tourism in Amsterdam, Netherlands

5. Learn about sustainable energy on NEMO’s scenic roof terrace

Rising from the IJ river, Amsterdam's boat-shaped, green-copper  NEMO science museum is a city landmark. Its 22m-high (72ft) roof terrace is Amsterdam's largest and was designed as a public square, with a sweeping panorama over the watery city below. It also offers the opportunity to interact with the elements at the open-air Energetica exhibition, via a control-it-yourself kite and a sundial.

Planning tip: At the summertime Cascade, splash around with 4000L (1057 gallons) of water pouring through 30 receptacles and pools. The rooftop closes completely in bad weather.

6. Experience local life at the Albert Cuypmarkt

To get a feel for the "real" Amsterdam, trawl its largest street market, the  Albert Cuypmarkt . Unfurling along Albert Cuypstraat between Ferdinand Bolstraat and Van Woustraat, in the lively neighborhood of De Pijp , it's the place locals shop for shimmering fabrics, bike locks, socks, fresh flowers and a vast array of snacks, such as herring sandwiches and, of course, Dutch cheeses (stalls often offer samples).

Planning tip: The market sets up every day except Sunday.

7. Revel in electrifying jazz at a Bimhuis jam session

Rollicking jam sessions at the  Bimhuis – the core of Amsterdam's influential jazz scene – feature an eclectic array of local and international talent.

Planning tip: Free jam sessions take place every Tuesday at 10pm from September to June.

The grand interior of the Concertgebouw orchestra hall, with a full orchestra present on the stage, including a huge organ, and a large crowd filling the stalls

8. Preview classical music performances at the Concertgebouw

The  Concertgebouw 's free lunchtime shows are often rehearsals for musicians playing the famed classical hall later that evening; you might also catch chamber music by up-and-coming performers.

Planning tip: You'll need to prebook online (there's a nominal reservation charge). Concerts typically take place at 12:30pm on Wednesdays between September and June.

Bloemenmarkt, the floating flower market in Amsterdam, Netherlands

9. Browse Amsterdam's colorful flower market

Take a heady stroll amid tulips, daffodils and other blooms along Singel between Muntplein and Koningsplein, home of the  Bloemenmarkt . The city’s "floating" flower market was founded against the dramatic canal backdrop in 1862, when horticulturalists sailed here to hawk their wares. Bulbs and fresh flowers are still sold here today, along with souvenirs.

10. Seek out the peaceful Begijnhof courtyard in Amsterdam's busy center

To find the hidden  Begijnhof , enter the door off Gedempte Begijnensloot (near heaving shopping strip Kalverstraat) and a tranquil oasis of diminutive 14th-century houses and gardens appears, along with two clandestine, relic-filled churches.

While the last of the Catholic Beguines died in 1971, it’s still the home of 105 women residents, so visitors need to be respectful (no photos) and preserve the hushed silence.

11. Explore the world's largest city archives

Amsterdam's  Stadsarchief occupies a glorious century-old former bank. Rotating displays from the city archives might include anything from a 1625 city map to a 1942 police report on Anne Frank's bike theft to photos from John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1969 bed-in at the Hilton. The Amsterdam Treasure Room and most exhibitions are free.

A male employee sharpens a diamond using a microscope on the Gassan Diamond Factory Tour, Amsterdam

12. Discover diamonds' secrets on a factory tour

Don't know your princess cut from your marquise, or a river from a top cape? Get a debriefing on diamonds during a free one-hour tour of  Gassan 's beautifully restored 19th-century workshop. You'll watch pro polishers in action as a primer on assessing diamonds, then land in a gift shop selling sparklers.

13. Get schooled at Cannabis College

Nonprofit center  Cannabis College educates visitors about its eponymous herb, which flourishes here in its own organic garden. Chat with staff about coffee-shop etiquette, view displays of paraphernalia and browse hemp-made products.

Outside view of Amsterdam Central Library, the Centrale Bibliotheek, largest public library in Europe

14. Check out Amsterdam's awesome main library

At the Netherlands' largest public library, the light-filled  OBA: Centrale Bibliotheek , you can catch various exhibitions, screenings and events, or just settle into a cushy sofa for an afternoon's reading.

Planning tip: From April to October, don't miss the top-floor city panorama from the restaurant terrace.

15. Meet adorable kitties living aboard the "cat boat"

Afloat on the Singel, the quirky  Poezenboot has served as a stray-cat sanctuary since 1966. Today it's home to some 50 cats, many of whom are looking to be adopted. Admission is free, but donations are warmly welcomed.

16. Visit Amsterdam’s last remaining country mansion, Frankendael

See how wealthy 18th-century Amsterdammers spent summers in once-bucolic surrounds at  Huize Frankendael , the last country mansion standing within the present-day city limits. (There were once more than three dozen.) The beautifully landscaped gardens are free to explore.

Planning tip: On the last Sunday afternoon of the month, the house is opened to visitors and often hosts art exhibitions, while in the grounds, artisan producers showcase their creations at De Pure Markt.

17. View cutting-edge photography exhibitions at Melkweg Expo

Just around the corner from legendary nightlife venue Melkweg, late-opening gallery space  Melkweg Expo celebrates pop culture, society and identity through inspired contemporary photography at free exhibitions throughout the year. Enter via the Milk Cafe.

People at an open-air screening of Kenyan film "Supa Modo" at Vondelpark's Openluchttheater during World Cinema Amsterdam

18. Catch summertime shows in Amsterdam's most popular park

Amsterdam's leafy  Vondelpark is beloved by locals for its expansive lawns, striking sculptures (including one by Picasso) and festive atmosphere, which peaks on sunny summer days when free performances – world music, dance, plays, stand-up comedy and more – take place at its open-air theater, the Openluchttheater.

Planning tip: Concerts are held from Friday evenings to Sunday afternoons between June and September.

19. Track down contemporary exhibitions at OSCAM

Fashion, photography, art, craft and design exhibitions are on show at OSCAM (Open Space Contemporary Art Museum). All exhibitions are free. The bright, stark concrete space is situated on Bijlmerplein near the Amsterdam Arena in the city's southeast.

Planning tip: Gallery exhibitions set up between early September and mid-July.

20. Hear spellbinding organ music at De Duif

On the picturesque Prinsengracht in the Southern Canal Ring, listen out for music emanating from the neobaroque façade of  De Duif . The church's frescoed, neoclassical interior is dominated by the soaring pipes of its Smits organ, crafted in 1882, stretching to its vaulted ceiling.

Planning tip: Free organ recitals are held at 4pm every Sunday in summer, and 4pm every third Sunday the rest of the year.

21. Dance the tango at Oosterpark

In Amsterdam's Oost (East), the winding paths, ponds and leafy trees of the 19th-century  Oosterpark make it an elegant place to stroll. From spring to early fall, you can also dance here during free tango sessions – or just watch the dancers gliding around its wrought-iron bandstand.

Planning tip: Tango sessions take place at 3pm every second Sunday from May to September, weather permitting.

"Due to the events of last week, the Nicki Minaj show on Sunday, 2nd June at Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam will no longer be taking place," the company's statement reads. "Tickets will be refunded at the point of sale."

On May 25, Minaj was detained while leaving Amsterdam after kicking off the tour there when Dutch authorities claimed the rapper had marijuana in her luggage. Minaj documented the experience on social media, denying their claims. However, she was still placed in a police vehicle holding cell and had to postpone her show in Manchester, England that night.

"I'm not carrying drugs," Minaj said on Instagram Live at the time while speaking to a policeman. "I'm not going in there, I need a lawyer present. I need a lawyer present now. Where am I going?" The policeman responded that she had to go to the police station, and that they would work with her to get her to her next show in Manchester. "What am I doing? Oh so I'm under arrest? Under arrest for what?" she said.

Minaj's representatives did not immediately respond to Variety ‘s request for comment on the canceled Amsterdam date.

Since the incident on May 25, Minaj performed a rescheduled Manchester show, in addition to dates in Birmingham, London and Glasgow. She will play in Paris, France this weekend, before continuing to Germany and Poland.

News | Orange crush: Boats packed with revelers tour Amsterdam canals to celebrate the king’s birthday

Decked in the national orange color, dancing to music, and eating orange-glazed pastries, many in the netherlands are marking king’s day, celebrating the monarch’s birthday who is enjoying a slight rise in popularity as per a national poll.

As King Willem-Alexander celebrated his 57th birthday with his family in the northeastern city of Emmen, people across the country engaged in the traditional “free markets” held on that day, selling second-hand toys, books and other items. Others toured through the historic canals of the capital, Amsterdam as orange smoke from flares held aloft one boat drifted over vessels of all shapes and sizes jostling for space on a busy canal.

“Celebrating your birthday with your own family is the most beautiful thing you can experience. I’m very happy everybody is back,” Willem-Alexander told Dutch broadcaster NOS during a walkabout in Emmen, 190 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of the Dutch capital.

An annual poll published by the NOS for King’s Day showed Willem-Alexander’s popularity edging up very slightly since last year to 6.6 out of 10. His Argentine-born wife, Queen Maxima, scored 7.1 out of 10 in the poll of 1,015 people, conducted earlier this month.

The royals’ popularity took a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic after Willem-Alexander and his family went on vacation in Greece during a partial lockdown. The royals cut short their break amid national uproar and Willem-Alexander took the unusual step of issuing a video message to express his regret and contrition for the trip.

The king’s three daughters, Amalia, Alexia and Ariane have all spent time out of the country recently — Ariane has been studying in Italy while Alexia has taken a gap year to travel. The eldest and heir to the Dutch throne, Amalia, also returned ahead of the king’s birthday after being forced to leave her student accommodation in Amsterdam and move to Madrid following threats from the criminal underworld.

Amalia, 20, who is studying politics, psychology, law and economics at Amsterdam University, told NOS she was “extremely grateful to everybody who made it possible” for her to live in Spain, where she said she was able to enjoy more freedom than in the Netherlands.

But, she added: “I’m glad to be back.”
