Bicol is the adventure capital of the Philippines, and is well known for its active volcanoes, tranquil whale sharks, secret beaches and spicy food. The destination is popular with Filipinos but fairly unknown to foreign tourists, so this travel guide acts as an introduction to the beautiful region of Bicol Philippines.

Where is Bicol located in the Philippines

The Bicol region is based in the southern part of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago.

Bicol is a region made up of six provinces , Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon and the island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate, and has its own language, Bikol , which is highly influenced by Spanish.

The largest city is  Legazpi , the capital of Albay and the Bicol Region is bounded by the Lamon Bay to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the Sibuyan Sea and Ragay Gulf to the west.

The northernmost Bicol provinces of Camarines Norte and  Camarines Sur , are bordered to the west by the province of Quezon Philippines.

How to get to Bicol Philippines

Bicol can be reached by road or air. There are two main airports in Bicol, one in Naga, Naga Airport (WNP) and the other in Legazpi City, Legazpi Airport (LGP).

Both of these airports are serviced by major domestic carriers, including Philippines Airlines , Cebu Pacific and Cebgo airlines .

There are multiple flights a day between Bicol and other parts of the Philippines such as Cebu and Manila which is only a one hour flight away.

The distance by road from Bicol to Manila is 293 kilometres or 182 miles. The journey takes 8 to 10 hours by public transport from Manila, Cubao and Sampaloc. 

Travel by private car takes about 6 to 7 hours from Manila to Legazpi City Philippines.

Best Time to Visit Bicol Region

As the provinces in Bicol Philippines are an underrated tourist destination there is no peak season (yet!) so it’s there’s no need to worry about avoiding the crowds.

Bicol Philippines has an all year round tropical climate , however the wet season is from July to January, when typhoons can be common.

April is the driest month of the year so a great time to visit, especially if you want to go island hopping in the Caramoan Islands .

Best Places to Visit in Bicol Philippines

Legazpi city in albay philippines.

The best tourist spot in Bicol is the majestic  Mount Mayon , which is found in Legazpi City , the capital of Albay. 

Mt Mayon is 2,462 meters high and is the  world’s most perfectly formed volcano .

The active volcano can be seen from nearly anywhere in the city and most activities in Legazpi revolve around Mayon Volcano. Including hiking , ziplining and quad biking down the volcano !

Legazpi City is also home to Cagsawa Ruins , a 16th century church tower, and  Sumlang Lake , a water-sports haven with incredible views of Mount Mayon, both the ruins and the lake are popular Bicol tourist attractions.

Donsol in Bicol

Donsol is famous for being the whale shark capital of the world, and these huge fish can be seen all year round.

Boats leave daily from the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center, so if swimming with whale sharks is on your bucket list Donsol is the place to do it.

Other popular activities in Donsol include a firefly river tour , and scuba diving fun dives .

Naga City Camarines Sur Philippines

Whilst the rest of Bicol is famed for its nature and adventure, Naga City Philippines is the religious centre of Bicol.

Home to one of the most popular shrines in the Philippines, the Penafrancia Basilica Minore, is patterned after the Spanish shrine and is often visited by pilgrims and devotees.

Caramoan Island in Camarines Sur

The Caramoan Islands are the Philippines secret paradise.

This Asian hidden gem in Camarines Sur is often dubbed the next El Nido .

Spend your days, island hopping around the peninsula in search of white sand coves and limestone rocks and even look out for the filming location of the hit US TV show, Survivor .

Camarines Norte Philippines

The most popular spot in the Camarines Norte, is the  Catanduanes Islands , north of Luzon, which are a favourite amongst local surfers.

They are home to some of the most beautiful Bicol beaches, including Mamangal Beach , a completely untouched spot of paradise in the Catanduanes.

Another popular spot in the Camarines Norte is the city of Daet .

There are several good places to stay in Bicol, here are my recommendations for the different Bicol places to visit.

What is Bicol known for? Bicolano Food

The Bicol province is renowned for its spicy cuisine. Most Bicolano dishes contain, sili (hot chilli pepper) and gata (coconut milk) such as the most popular savoury dish, Bicol Express .

Locally, the Bicol Express is known as gulay na lada , and is made from ground pork, sili , baby shrimp, onion, garlic and other spices cooked in coconut milk.

Another popular Bicolano food dish is Pinangat , made from green  gabi  (taro) leaves wrapped around small pieces of fish, shrimp and/or pork.

Both dishes can be served with a vegetarian Bicol favourite, Laing, which is a chopped leafy green vegetable.

As for deserts, Legazpi is famous for its hot pink Chilli ice cream and Pili nut candies.

Festivals in Bicol City Philippines

Bicol is known for having some of the best festivals in the whole of the Philippines.

Some are religious, but others showcase the uniqueness of the Bicol Region.

• In April, Masbate City holds the only rodeo in Asia, Rodeo Masbateño .
• For the duration of May, Albay celebrates, Magayon Festival a month long festival which honours the beauty of Mount Mayon Volcano, which overlooks the city of Legazpi.
• Also in May, is the 8 day long Sarung Banggi Festival , a colourful religious celebration dedicated to Potenciano V Gregorio’s love song ‘Sarung Banggi’.
• During August, Legazpi City holds the Ibalong Festival, decidated to the folk story of Ibalong, where people dance in the streets wearing masks and costumes that represent the heroes and villains in the story.
• In September, Naga City holds one of the busiest festivals in Bicol, attracting more than six million people a year. The Peñafrancia Festival is held to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
• During Christmas, Naga Bicol also holds the Kamundagan Festival which includes lighting the Plaza Quezon Grandstand’s Christmas Village, and includes different fantasy themed Christmas shows held each night until Christmas Eve.

Start your sightseeing in Bicol Province by making a stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Penafrancia . You might be confused why you are taking time out of your busy schedule to this church, as it appears to be rather modern (it was completed in 1982).

It is a noteworthy stop due to its long-time association with being a Marian (a sect of Christianity) pilgrimage site. On the grounds of this church, you will find a shrine which attracts devotees from across the Philippines and Asia. They come to see a unique image of the Virgin Mary, which was crafted in 1710. Within you’ll also find oil paintings of the Station of the Cross, so take time to check them out before heading on your way.

Those looking for older, aged Roman Catholic churches while travelling in Bicol will love what they find at Daraga Church . More Attractions

Not all churches in Bicol have survived the ages intact, as you will see during a tour of Cagsawa Ruins Park . Protecting what are the remains of a 16th-century Franciscan church, this park allows visitors to bear witness to the destructive power to the nearby Mayon Volcano.

An eruption by this feared mount in 1814 destroyed the town of Cagsawa and this place of worship for the 2nd and final time (Dutch pirates burned it to the ground in 1636), leaving behind a bell tower and several wrecked walls which are overgrown by jungle vines in the present day.

The gravity of this place and choice views of the Mayon Volcano make this place worth visiting despite an overabundance of souvenir shops and touts, so be brave and endure the onslaught on your way into the park.

Other Cultural Attractions: Trip to Bicol, Philippines

Dominating the skyline through much of Bicol, the Mayon Volcano is easily this region’s most significant natural attraction. A destructive volcano which has laid waste to towns numerous times in its notorious past, climbing it can be a risky proposition at best (it last erupted in January 2018).

However, if threat levels are low enough, there are ATV tours which will take you as close as humanly possible to this smoking giant. Give it a go – you only live once!

As mentioned earlier, there are a number of beautiful tropical islands one can visit while in Bicol. Make Matukad Island your first stop, as it boasts soft, white sand and an abundance of cliffs. Just offshore, there are a number of limestone karsts and sea stacks – while not as extensive as El Nido, it is a pleasant surprise for an island off the beaten track in the Philippines.

Lahos Island is another gem located off the coast of Bicol. Much smaller in stature than Matukad, it is known for a strip of sand which connects two husks of limestone overgrown by vegetation. Ideal as part of a day spent island hopping off this part of Bicol, its crystal clear water will make it tough for you leave this tranquil place.

Think you have to go to Dumaguete to go diving for whale sharks? Thankfully, the town of Donsol offers whale shark diving , negating the need to jump on a plane bound for the south of the Philippines.

As soon as you slip into the water off the coast of this town in Bicol, you’ll understand why so many travellers have this activity on their bucket list. Despite the fearsome name, whale sharks are gentle giants, making an encounter with them nothing short of magical.

Located on the southeastern end of Luzon, Bicol Region comprises six provinces – Albay , Camarines Norte , Camarines Sur , Catanduanes , Masbate , and Sorsogon .  While it is known for its imposing landforms in the name of Mount Mayon and Mount Bulusan, there are several other attractions and activities to look forward to in Bicol.  The beautiful beaches, rich marine life, and historical structures make the region even more interesting and attractive to local and foreign tourists alike.

Its cuisine is one of the most popular in the country, too!  Known for the sizzling taste due to the abundant use of chili, several Bicolano dishes have become popular all over the country.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Bicol Region summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Bicol Region in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

1 | Try the adventures around Mount Mayon

Province:  Albay

Not only is it regarded as sacred in Philippine mythology, the beautiful Mount Mayon with its perfect cone is also a great destination for various activities such as hiking, camping, ATV riding, and tours.  It was declared a natural park in 2000 and is one of the protected areas in the region.  It is home to hundreds of species of flowers and trees including Nepenthes ventricosa, a near-threatened species of pitcher plant.  Mount Mayon is also inhabited by hundreds of fauna including the vulnerable Philippine Brown Deer, Philippine Warty Pig, Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox, Philippine Eagle-owl, Banded Pygmy Tree Frog, the nearly-threatened Luzon Bleeding Heart, and the and critically-endangered Philippine Cockatoo.

Mount Mayon may be one of the most destructive volcanoes in the country but its beauty, mystery, and abundance in flora and fauna keep attracting the attention of tourists.

2 | Revel in the refreshing atmosphere of Quitinday Falls and Underground River

Palawan isn’t the only province in the Philippines with an underground river .  You can find one in Albay too!  Although only about 150 meters in length, Quitinday Falls and Underground River is beautifully adorned with columns, stalactites, stalagmites, and rock formations.  It has a cliff where one can jump off into the gorge and enjoy the refreshing water.

3 | See the attractions in Daraga Town

Cagsawa Ruins is one of the most photographed spots in Albay and is found in the town of Daraga.  The ruins are the remnants of the 16th century Franciscan church that was destroyed when Mayon erupted in 1814, its most destructive so far.  After the eruption of Mayon, Daraga Church, officially Nuestra Señora de la Porteria Parish Church (also Our Lady of the Gate Parish Church), was built to replace the church of Cagsawa.  The church is of Churrigueresque architectural style and is mostly made of volcanic rocks.  This centuries-old church was declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2007.

Not too far from Daraga Church is Ligñon Hill Nature Park, the second highest point in Albay next to Mayon.  It is a prehistoric cinder cone mainly composed of dolerite and basaltic volcanic rocks.  The hill offers the panoramic view of Mayon and Legazpi City with its coin-operated telescopes.  Restaurants and shops are also found in the park.

Province: Albay

Legazpi is the capital city of Albay and the business center not only of the province of Albay but the whole Bicol Region.  Aside from several restaurants, hotels, malls, and commercial centers like in most cities in the country, Legazpi offers other tourist activities like ATV rides around Mayon , ziplining, skydiving, and water sports.

Province: Camarines Sur

Dubbed as the Emerging Paradise of the Pacific, Caramoan Island has been attracting the attention of tourists with its unspoilt natural attractions such as white and pink sand beaches, lakes, caves, coves, lagoons, and limestone forests blessed with rich biodiversity of flora and fauna.  Several editions of the reality show Survivor have even taken place in Caramoan therefore pushing the island to popularity even outside the country.

7 | Enjoy Naga City

Naga City is located in the center of Bicol Peninsula thus the nickname the Heart of Bicol.  Apart from being a business district, it is also a medical, educational, cultural, and religious center.  It is also nicknamed as the Pilgrim City due to a number of churches and other religious institutions in the city.  

Due to its proximity to Mount Isarog and other natural attractions around it such as falls and springs, Naga City is also a gateway to several exciting activities like ATV rides and hiking.

9 | Hike to Binurong Point

Province: Catanduanes

Fancy the rolling hills just like in Batanes ?  Well, you can see it in Catanduanes .  Hiking to the top takes between 20 to 30 minutes through a forested trail.  Some parts of the trail can be muddy and slippery but Binurong Point offers scenic views of the sea, the greenery around, and the magnificent sunrise when you hike early in the morning.

10 | Relax at the beaches in Virac

Virac is blessed with pristine beaches ideal for relaxing and spending time with family and friends.  Amenia Beach is calm and perfect for kids who want to swim and play in the water.  Mamangal Beach is a good choice for those who want to see life underwater.  Beaches perfect for lounging are Balite, Batag, and Marilima as they are usually peaceful.

11 | Swim with whale sharks in Donsol

Province: Sorsogon

Apart from Oslob in Cebu , the other place to swim with whale sharks in the Philippines is Donsol, Sorsogon.  What’s great about swimming with whale sharks in Donsol is the effort the people put in to protect these gentle giants from over-tourism and from being hurt or altering their natural tendencies.

12 | Visit the top attractions in Matnog

Matnog is a coastal town in the southernmost part of Luzon Island.  Facing Northern Samar , its sea port is one of the busiest in the region.  It is blessed with stunning natural attractions such as Subic Beach and Tikling Island with their pink sand and pristine waters.  Subic Beach has cottages to accommodate tourists but Tikling Island is unspoilt and free of any type of accommodation.  Not too far away from Subic Beach is Juag Fish Sanctuary where you can snorkel and see the aquatic creatures in a protected environment.

13 | Explore Mount Bulusan

At 1565 MASL, Mount Bulusan is home to several hot springs, lakes, and a diverse range of flora and fauna.  Day hike is possible but staying the night to explore makes for a more rewarding trip given the breathtaking views of the area early in the morning.

14 | Marvel at the natural beauty of Masbate

Province: Masbate

Consisting of three major islands namely Masbate , Ticao , and Burias , the province of Masbate is blessed with natural attractions such as white sand beaches, unspoilt islands, and pristine waters inhabited by a diversity of marine species.  Palani White Beach and Porta Vega Beach are popular for their white sand and coast lined with palm trees.  To see marine life, don’t miss Halea Nature Park, Buntod Sandbar and Reef Marine Sanctuary, and Manta Bowl.  Other attractions you shouldn’t miss are Animasola Island, Pawa Mangrove Park, Tinalisayan Island, and Sombrero Island.

3 | 1st Colonial Grill

Originating from Albay, 1st Colonial Grill serves Filipino cuisine, particularly Bicolano dishes.  It claims to be the home of the first sili (chili pepper) ice cream in the country.  Additionally, the restaurant has come up with other ice cream flavors representing the region such as pili, latik, pineapple, cacao, carmelado, and tinutungan na bigas (toasted rice).  Aside from ice cream, dishes to try include tinapa fried rice, buko chopsuey, and pork sisig.

Geewan is a carinderia-style restaurant where you can point (turo-turo style) the dish you want among the dishes being displayed.  It specializes in Bicolano cuisine although it serves other Filipino dishes as well.  The restaurant is affordably-priced which is perfect for students, budget travellers, and those who are with a large group.  Don’t miss their kare kare, pinangat, lechon kawali, and lechon paksiw.

5 | Red Platter

Red Platter is a semi-fine dining restaurant located in Naga City’s most popular dining destination.  It serves an array of cuisines including Asia and Western in addition to Bicolano.  Customers review about their kare kare but their halo halo, buko pandan, cakes, and other sweet treats are equally good.

6 | Sibid-Sibid

A quaint restaurant in Legazpi City, Sibid-Sibid serves Filipino cuisine and is the perfect place to go to for your seafood cravings.  Its bamboo and wood interiors complete its provincial vibe.  Their bestsellers include Tuna Bicol Express and Seafood Mix however you have to try their chicken dishes too since they only use native and free range chicken.

Not only does it have a cozy and nice ambience, the food is affordable too.  With a buffet dining for less than P300 ($6 USD), you can eat Bicolano dishes to your heart’s content albeit the choices are limited.  Nevertheless, the taste makes up for the limited choices.  Their bestsellers include Crispy Shrimp and Bicol Express.

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB . 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!  

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

• Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
• Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
• Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
• Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
• Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
• Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
• It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
• Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
• Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
• Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Bicol Region or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

A Backpacker’s Guide to the Bicol Region: Albay, Catanduanes, CamSur & Sorsogon

Located in the southernmost part of Luzon island, the Bicol Region is famous for its whale sharks, pristine islands, breathtaking waterfalls , mouthwatering foods, friendly residents, and active volcanoes. With its breathtaking landscapes, underrated tourist attractions, cultural sites, and amazing historical discoveries, I must say that Bicol must be part of your bucket list when traveling around the Philippines. 

As I wandered around the region for 6 days and 5 nights, I truly fell in love with its beauty. It has its own charm that differs from other regions or places that I have visited across the country. I have been dreaming of exploring and going backpacking around the Bicol Region for a long time, and I am so grateful that it has finally come true! Truthfully, it made me quite emotional as I was exploring the region. Going backpacking is one of my favorite parts of traveling across the region, which I haven’t done since the pandemic.

In this blog, find out why Bicol is a must-visit region in the Philippines as I walk you through some of the best places that it offers. Apart from the popular Mayon Volcano in Albay, there is so much more to see in the Bicol Region. Here’s an ultimate backpacking guide to the Bicol Region with a bonus of a sample itinerary and expenses.

Where is the Bicol Region located? 

The Bicol Region is designated as Region V and is located at the southernmost end of Luzon (the largest island in the Philippines). Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, and Masbate are the six provinces that make up the region.

Legazpi is the largest city in the Bicol Region, which is the capital of Albay. Meanwhile, Camarines Sur is the largest province in the area, while Catanduanes Island is the smallest island province in the region. Locals from the Bicol region are called Bicolanos, whose mother tongue is the Bikol language, which falls under four major groups of language.

How to get to the Bicol Region?

There are two ways to get to Bicol: by air or by road. Legazpi, Naga, and Virac have their own airports. If you travel by plane, travel time is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. Either way, you can reach the province by bus, which takes you around 10 hours or so.

By Air 

From Manila to Legazpi, Sorsogon, and Virac, you can book a flight via Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, or Cebgo Airlines. 

From Manila, there are buses from Cubao or Pasay that travel to Bicol daily. Buses are bound for Legazpi, Naga, and Sorsogon.

How to get to Catanduanes Island from Legazpi, Albay?

From Legazpi, take any public transport bound for the SM Legazpi terminal. Then, take a van heading to Tabaco port. From Tabaco port, take a ferry bound for Catanduanes Island. The ferry is either bound for San Andres port or Virac port.

How to get to the Caramoan Islands from Catanduanes Island?

From Catanduanes Island, you need to rent a private boat from Codon Port. Codon Port is the starting point of the island hopping tour to the Caramoan Islands.

Getting around the city is very accessible. If you want to travel around the city without breaking the bank. You can either take a tricycle or jeepneys while wandering around the city.

How to get to Sorsogon from Legazpi City? 

From Legazpi City, take any public transport heading to SM Legazpi Terminal. Then, take a van bound for Sorsogon. Tell the driver to drop you off at SM Sorsogon. Travel time is around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Take note that you can do so much more in each of the provinces. In our case, we wanted to stay longer in every place that we visited. That’s why we didn’t really bother visiting a lot of places. I think it is also a sign of aging, wherein we get tired easily. Lol.

6D5N Bicol Region Travel Guide with Itinerary & Expenses

If you are also planning to go backpacking around the Bicol region, you may want to follow this sample itinerary which is good for six days and five nights. This also gives you an idea of how much budget you should bring with you for the entire Bicol region backpacking trip.

Yes, it is safe to travel around Bicol. Most of the locals are very approachable and helpful whenever you ask for directions or anything you need to know about the place itself.

When is the best time to visit the Bicol Region?

April is the best time to visit Bicol since this is the driest month of the year. The perfect time would be around April to May. 

Is the internet connection good in Bicol?

Definitely! The internet connection is pretty much stable around the region. You won’t have any problems with connecting your data to your phone while traveling around the area.

Is it worth visiting the Bicol region?

Yes! It is worth visiting the region. The fact that it is not so expensive to travel around the place, the locals are very kind, and the food totally tastes good! I would really love to keep coming back to this place.

Where to stay in Legazpi, Albay?

We stayed at Aurelle Inn during our entire stay in Legazpi, Albay. The hostel is just 5 minutes away from SM City Legazpi. The cost is about Php 1200 per night, which is already good for two pax. With free breakfast!

Where to stay in Virac, Catanduanes?

We stayed in Rakdell Inn during our stay in Virac. It only cost us around Php 1000 per night. Location-wise, it is very accessible since it is just located in the town.

Do I need a tour guide when traveling around the region?

Not necessarily. You can mostly do DIY backpacking. On the other hand, you may need to avail yourself of a package for ATV Mayon Volcano adventure and hire a tour guide on Catanduanes Island. For reference, you may reach out to the following:

Bicol is a destination suitable for all with its historical sites, eco-tourism and watersports. There is also the famous Mayon Volcano , Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, and numerous stunning waterfalls. Let’s not forget about the whale sharks and manta rays, which is something that Bicol famous for.

There are a number of ways to get in and around Bicol. The Legazpi International Airport in Legazpi City is the main air hub in the region, connecting it directly to Cebu and Manila. There are also a few other airports in the region, including Naga Airport, Moises R Espinosa Airport, and Virac Airport.

Bicol residents are known as Bicolanos and their mother tongue is some form of the Bikol sociolinguistic language. The region has a thriving culture with many colorful festivals, both religious and otherwise.

Like the rest of the Philippines, Bicol has a tropical climate. It is dry from February until May or June and wet for the remainder of the year. April is the driest month and December is the wettest, though typhoons are most common between July and October.

The 156 meter high Ligñon Hill just outside of Legazpi City is a great place to snap photos of Mayon Volcano and can easily be reached by car from the city. There is a zip line, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and a viewing deck with telescopes at the top of the hill. Legazpi City itself also has a few other things to see, like the waterfront Embarcadero and the Legazpi City Museum .

Naga City ’s Penafrancia Basilica Minore is home to the shrine of Our Lady of Penafrancia , one of the most popular shrines in the country. It is patterned after the one in Spain and is often visited by pilgrims, devotees, and of course tourists.

Some of the most stunning stretches of beach in Bicol are in Catanduanes, an island province to the east of Luzon. Of these, Mamangal Beach is one of the most exceptional, completely untouched and ideal for swimmers and sun worshippers.

There are numerous churches, monuments and historical sites all over Bicol, with the city of Daet being a great place to start. Here, visitors will find Parroquia de San Juan Bautista – one of the oldest churches in the region-, the Rizal Monument , and Pineapple Fountain , among other sites.

Surfers head to Bagasbus Beach on the eastern coast of the island. This beach combined with Puraran Beach offer some of the best surfing and kite surfing in the country.

Donsol is the world’s whale shark capital and the massive beasts can actually be seen here year round. One of the most rewarding things to do is to go swimming with whale sharks , with boats leaving daily from the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center. Swimming with whalesharks features in most Bicol Tours.

The waters that surround Ticao Island are some of the best for diving , particularly for those wishing to swim with manta rays . There are five dive sites surrounding the island, ranging from 14 to 29 meters. It is also possible to dive around the island from Donsol, where there are even more diving outfitters.

The adventurous can go caving in Bicol, with Virac on the island of Catanduanes being the best place to do this from. The most well-known caves in the area are Buyo Cave, and the Marilima and Talisay Caves.

For something a little bit different, the Camsur Watersports Complex has it all. This six-hectare world-class watersports complex is home to a 6-point cable ski system as well as offering wakeboarding, kneeboarding, waterskiing, and wakeskating.

Rodeo Masbateño is Asia’s only rodeo and is celebrated each year in April in Masbate City. It features 10 competitive rodeo events, with the ‘figure of eight’ competition being the highlight of them all.

One of the most colorful festivals in Bicol is the annual eight-day Sarung Banggi festival that is held each May and showcases numerous religious and cultural activities from the region. The festival itself is dedicated to Potenciano V Gregorio’s love song ‘Sarung Banggi’, with the main highlight of the event being the street dance presentation.

Legazpi’s City’s non-religious Ibalong Festival is held every August to celebrate the epic folk story Ibalong. It is a colorful event where people dance in the streets wearing masks and costumes that represent the heroes and villains in the story.

On the third Saturday in September, Naga City holds its annual Peñafrancia Festival to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia. This is one of the busiest festivals in all of Bicol, attracting over six million people each year. The city also holds the annual Kamundagan Festival every Christmas by lighting the Plaza Quezon Grandstand’s Christmas Village, with different fantasy-themed Christmas shows being held each night until Christmas Eve. Donsol  is a small rural town in coastal village close to Legazpi in Sorsogon. It has recently become a favored destination to swim with whale sharks over Oslob, due to the responsible way in which it practices tourism.

Swimming with whale sharks, locally known as  butanding , was featured as the Best Animal Encounter in Asia by Time Magazine in 2004. Whale sharks can be seen between November and June, with presence peaking between February and May. This is one of the best Bicol Tours.

The presence of whale sharks in the town of Donsol was known to the local residents over 100 years. But the locals believed these gentle giants were dangerous. This wrong notion changed when in December 26, 1997, a group of scuba divers led by Romir Aglugub – a PADI diving instructor, discovered its presence, and interacted and came in contact with the whale sharks. Even the members of the diving group of Romir was having second thought if the fish is docile, until the instructor led the way into the water and came in contact with the whale shark. Copy of video footage taken by the group was passed on to the media and the WWF-Philippines. By March 1998, Donsol became world-class tourist destination and now known as the “Whale Shark Capital of the World”.

Interaction with the whale sharks is regulated by the local Department of Tourism (DOT) office. WWF guidelines are generally observed to protect the sharks. Rules include limiting the number of swimmers per boat to six, no scuba divers and staying further than three meters from the sharks. In recent years the number of male sharks have out-numbered female sharks by 20:1. The females that are seen are generally large mature adults in the 7m ~ 9m range. Increasing numbers of sharks show propeller marks on their backs. Anecdotal evidence from local fishermen suggests that prop strikes are from fishing boats in the off-season, rather than from tourist boats in the main February–June tourist season.

In 2006 five sharks were found dead on the surface, within 30 miles of Donsol. They had all been shot at close range. One shark had 13 bullet wounds to the head. The locals blame this on commercial fishermen shooting the sharks if they are caught in their nets. Manta rays, which are also protected in the Philippines, are also over fished and sold in local markets in the Sorsogon area. Groups from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Philippines make up the largest groups of visitors. Most book guided tours with dive centers familiar with whale shark interaction.

Another place where you can see whalesharks is Oslob on Cebu .

Mayon , also known as Mount Mayon or Mayon Volcano, is an active stratovolcano in the province of Albay in Bicol Region, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Renowned as the “perfect cone” because of its symmetric conical shape, the volcano and its surrounding landscape was declared a national park on July 20, 1938, the first in the nation. It was reclassified a Natural Park and renamed Mayon Volcano Natural Park in the year 2000. Local folklore refers to the volcano being named after the legendary princess-heroine Daragang Magayon (English: Beautiful Lady).

Mayon is the archetype of a symmetrical stratovolcano and one of the world most active ones. It has frequent eruptions producing pyroclastic flows, mud flows and ash falls that repeatedly triggered large-scale evacuations. Mayon’s most violent eruption, in 1814, killed more than 1200 people and devastated several towns.

The volcano rises 2462 m above the Albay Gulf and has very steep upper slopes averaging 35-40 degrees capped by a small summit crater. Historical records of eruptions date back to 1616 and range from strombolian to basaltic plinian, with cyclical activity beginning with basaltic eruptions, followed by longer term andesitic lava flows. Eruptions occur predominately from the central conduit and have also produced lava flows that travel far down the flanks. Pyroclastic flows and mudflows have commonly swept down many of the approximately 40 ravines that radiate from the summit and have often devastated populated lowland areas.

The best time to climb Mount Mayon will be between February to April. Climbing the Mount Mayon is highly depending of the weather condition and volcano activity. We are closely monitoring weather and volcano seismology. There are severals camps on the slopes of Mount Mayon:

Base camp (250m above see level): the camp is accesible by car, this is the start of the trekking.

Camp 1 (750m above sea level): at around 2 hours away , it lies at the foot of the slope of the mountain.

Camp 2 (1800m above sea level): is situated beside a dry waterfall bed or popularly known as the “gulley” or “water source”, climbers reach this camp site after a four to five hour long trek and climb from the base camp. Camp 2 also offers spectacular view of the city of Legazpi and the ocean.

From Camp 2, there would be a 5 to 7 hours hard trek to reach the crater of Mount Mayon.  Trekkers would be passing straight up the gulley towards the summit.  This part of the leg is definitely not for the weak as this is best recommended for intermediate or advanced climbers.  Upon reaching the summit, you will be rewarded with an unbelievable view of the Legaspi City and the islands next to it.

Sorsogon lies at the southernmost tip of Luzon in the province of Bicol. I had been part of many traveling groups and sadly, I hardly saw topics about this province. Evidently, Donsol is the most popular tourist destination in Sorsogon but I’m telling you, there are more reasons why your next destination should be Sorsogon

1. They Have a Hotel Which Isn’t Just a hotel, it’s a Destination!

2. be the first to discover the emerging surfing destination of gubat.

Surfers would really love to discover this raw, unspoiled, less crowded, uncommercialized surfing haven in Gubat, Sorsogon. From the moment we stepped out of our coaster, I could hear the rhythmic percussion of waves.

The beach is facing the Pacific Ocean and waves during this month (July) is ideal for beginners but I noticed that it’s bigger compared with the one in La Union. Locals said, for experienced surfers, the month of October – March is the best time to visit.

It’s a long stretch of fine and gray-sand beach covered. There are no big resorts and party. If we will be given a chance to stay overnight, I can sense the chillax ambiance at night while having a drink.

How to Get There:

Coming from Sorsogon City, you can ride a jeep going to Gubat. From Gubat Town proper, catch a jeep going to Bulusan that passes by Rizal Beach or hire a tricycle that can bring you directly to Lola Sayong Surf Camp.

3. Their River Cruise with Firefly Watching is Enchanting

Your visit to Sorsogon will never be complete without trying Buhatan River Eco Adventure . It’s one of the newest attractions in the province founded and managed by the initiative of the people of Buhatan.

I was expecting it to be like the river cruise that I had in Loboc, Bohol but it turned out to be different. This is more slow, calm, and relaxing. There was no buffet during the cruise, no band playing in the background, but I find it quite alright as it made the cruise more peaceful. The cruise can only take a maximum of 10pax.

Our rectangular, floating, bamboo cottage has a white cloth which serves as its roof. The chairs have white and soft cushions to sitting comfortable. During the cruise, we enjoyed different kinds of Pili Products and a juice made of ginger.

As we moved to our destination, which is a floating restaurant, I felt delighted to hear the story of Bayanihan (a spirit of communal unity and cooperation) to make Buhatan River Eco Adventure a success.

People from the community help each other to plant mangroves, now its shoreline has lush vegetation. They clean and protect the river regularly and it created more jobs for the local.

After our delectable dinner, we tried to catch some shrimp using a square fish net that we throw on the river while waiting for the sun to set and started our cruise back to the starting point.

The air became cool and the evening eats away all the colors and lights. Suddenly, there was a quick flicker and crackle of light, one at a time, too fast for the naked eye. Fireflies started to show up; warm glows that illuminated the night.

I can’t explain the feeling exactly; I just think it’s magical, bizarre, and enchanting. I badly tried to catch a good photo but it’s too dark and they are too small that my camera failed to capture their beauty. I would be forever thankful that I experienced this kind of adventure.

4. They Just Don’t Have a White Sand Beach – They Have a Pinkish White Beach!

While everyone goes crazy with fine white beach, people in Matnog, Sorsogon enjoy a pinkish white-sand beach. Matnog is the home of amazing aquatic species and incredible pinkish sand.

We first visited Tikling Island , which reminds me of Islands in Britania, Surigao. It’s peaceful and there was only one nipa hut built on the island. The sand was mixed with small coral stones, the water was crystal clear and we were lucky to spot some wild boars roaming around. I hope they could keep the raw beauty of this island.

Our next stop was my favorite; Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary . When I heard our guide said that it’s a good spot for diving and snorkeling, I immediately felt so ecstatic and would love to jump instantly. I never missed the opportunity to swim with fishes and they are incredibly big. At first, I was alarmed that they might bite me but sooner I enjoyed feeding them.

The last part of our tour was beach bumming at Subic Beach , Matnog’s very own pinkish-white beach. Absolutely, one of the best beaches I visited.

It’s low season during July, I believe we are the only visitors during that time. Water was incredibly clear and has different shades of blue and green. Sand is powdery and sparkling. This is my definition of Paradise – isolated, beautiful, and tranquil.

• Coming from Manila by land you can take a bus bound to Matnog from Alabang, Cubao or Pasay. Look for bus companies like DLTB, Philtranco, or Penafrancia. Travel time is 14 hours. An alternate option is to take a bus bound to Samar, it will stop at Matnog Pier before boarding the ferry.
• If you will fly from Manila to Legazpi, from the airport ride a tricycle and tell the driver to bring you at Daraga – Matnog bus terminal.
• Alternatively, take a bus bound to Sorsogon City, then ride a jeep that can bring you to Matnog.

5. You Don’t Need to Fly out of the Country to Experience Switzerland

I felt like entering a different dimension when we entered the gate of Bulusan Lake National Park . No wonder because it’s nestled at the foot of an active Volcano.  The 1 km road from the gate up to the lake, which was surrounded by tall trees and plants was ravishing.

The sun was about to set when we reached the lake. The beauty of Bulusan Lake, dubbed as the Switzerland of the orient made my jaw drop. Absolutely, the most beautiful lake I’ve ever seen in the Philippines. The lake was surrounded by lush green trees, the water was clean and green too.

There are different activities available in the park. we tried the canopy walk and kayaking. But the best part of our stay was our short snack break on the floating villa at the heart of Lake Bulusan, where locals served us delicious Pili delicacies while listening to local songs. Some had a relaxing massage too.

If you want to explore more, beyond the lake are several springs, hiking trails, and falls. You can coordinate with the management to do these activities.

You can take a tricycle from Irosin public market or wait for a Bulusan jeepney and alight at the Park entrance. From here, it’s a one-kilometer walk to the lake.

Wow! I mostly see reviews about Bora, Vigan, and those common places and it is my first time indeed to read an experience about sorsogon. Now this is indeed a travel destination, a must visit place! I am eyeing to visit Vigan but now, I am thinking twice about the former and Sorsogon.

It’s nice to know that they have done so much already to enable more tourists to visit Sorsogon… In particular Gubat, Irosin and other nearby towns. I used to go there every other week but it was for business. Back then, tourists? What tourists? Even on the road we were always wary because of NPA.

My almost trip hahaha.. I’d been to Sorsogon already but I didn’t really experience any of the things that you did on this trip so I’m inggit. But at least now I know what to do when I come back to revisit.

These are really beautiful places to get away, first the minimalist hotel, an idyllic place to just relax and be one with nature, then the pristine beaches which seem untouched by man and finally a piece of Switzerland in the Philippines. A truly magical experience indeed.

The lake is near the showroom of Napa Carpet Industries, one of the successful producers of abaca-based products in the province. Try to visit it to see raw materials like abaca and rattan, work-in-progress products, and sample products like those creative chairs and fixture on the raft. 

To get there, ride a jeepney bound for Camalig, Polangui or Guinobatan from Legazpi. To get to barangay Quitinday, rent a tricycle (for group) or habal-habal for solo or two travelers. Some tricycle drivers may not know where the showroom is, but if you mention the house of their Brgy. Captain they immediately get it.

Prelude to Butanding Encounter

Other Bicol destinations are relatively untapped due to their proximity to the main tourist attractions in their area. Destinations in Matnog, Sorsogon are an example.

The Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary in Matnog allows visitors to swim with the fish or feed them. This sanctuary is built for the preservation of local marine species and open to public for education and enjoyment.

Snorkeling in the pristine beaches of Matnog can be continued in Subic beach – one of the isolated islands near the sanctuary with pinkish sand. This gets rarely crowded so it’s likely you’ll have it to yourselves especially if you plan to stay overnight.

There is also an underwater cave in Calintaan Island, a 15-minute boat ride from Subic Beach, which can be accessed only during low tide.

How to get there

Sorsogon can be reached from Legazpi by bus or public van found at the terminal. If you choose the latter, you will have to ride a jeepney bound for Matnog once you reach Sorsogon city. Buses have a direct route to Matnog pier.

From there, you can rent a boat to bring you to the destinations mentioned above. There are huts for rent for both day use and overnight stay in Subic beach. Camping is also allowed.  

Surfing in Gubat and Bagasbas

If you prefer more action in your water adventure, the surfing sites in Gubat in Sorsogon and in Bagasbas, Camarines Norte could satisfy your craving. The shallow waters of Gubat make it an ideal surfing site for beginners. Peak surfing season starts from March to October.

You may choose to stay at one of the closed cottages at Lola Sayong Camp or camp in the area. Fees for camping and tent rental apply.

Bagasbas, on the other hand, owes its mightier waves to its closeness to the Pacific Ocean. While it welcomes surfers of any levels, the barrels it provides in the months of July to November make it a haven for local seasoned surfers.

Other extreme water sports like kite surfing and paragliding are also offered here. The hourly rate for surfing lesson is 200 pesos and another 200 pesos for board rentals.

Comfort food, fusion dishes

Get to know cuisines that Bicolanos have embraced either as comfort food or fusion dishes. In Naga, there are restaurants and carinderias where you can sample local favorites for breakfast and merienda and meals for group for all occasions.

Homegrown Food

Chef Doy’s Gourmet, located at Magsaysay Ave, offers Bicolano comfort food like pinakro with guava sauce (banana cooked in gata). Pair this with salabat with hulog-hulog (sticky rice).

The restaurant’s 7 Portals are particularly eye-catchy. According to Que Pasa, “each portal serves as a canvas for seven well-curated artists – each a class act – for them to visually interpret works written by Filipino/Spanish literary greats.” Price range from 150-300 pesos.

For all its friendliness, quaint town romance & encompassing acceptance of the diversity of humankind, Tabaco City prides itself as Bicol’s City of Love. Here, this affection is as hot as its chili, as easy breezy as its beaches & its people are heartwarming as you can imagine.

I have to admit that it wasn’t love at first sight. My first visit here was in 2011 for a quick run at work. Then it was seconded by a spontaneous detour when I did a crosscountry roadtrip in 2017. And in the summer of 2018, I just let it slip through the night before sailing to Catanduanes early the next day.

What’s there to love about Tabaco City?

After a few failed attempts to experience Tabaco City, I finally got the chance to feel its real vibe when I got invited to the celebration of its town fiesta. This time, I had an entire week to indulge on so many wonderful things that I missed out on in the past.

The weeks leading up to June 24 are always a great time to visit Tabaco City as it stages Tabak Festival & the feast of St. John the Baptist. It celebrates the ingenuity of tabak making or bolo smithing as one of its prime local crafts.

Tabak Festival

This merrymaking rejoices many things Tabaceño: their adoration for St. John, its bountiful harvests as well as the charms of its crafts. Also, it celebrates its people’s skills, talents & beauty that make them proud as Bicolanos.

Admirably, this festival gives every group in their community a time to shine in various variety shows. There’s one for LGBTQI, for LGU employees, for hip-hoppers & cosplayers. Then there are events for farmers, fisherfolks, bladesmiths & even teenage moms too.

One thing that fascinates me about Tabaco City is its abounding view of Mayon Volcano . And, I highly toss this place as one of the best spots to catch her elusive beauty. I surely had a fantastic week waking up to her allure from my hotel’s window.

I chased her from the sea, at the plaza & from the road. Even hunted her from fields to farms & from islands to highlands. She’s just so all around that makes the town naturally spectacular.

And if you can’t really get enough of her from a panoramic distance, you can scale up to Mayon Planetarium & Science Park in Buang. Saddling at 2,800 feet above, this spot offers not just an observatory facility & museum but also a breathtaking view of this side of Albay.

Old-Town Charm & New City Feels

The city’s town center is compact. Sleek commercial buildings grow in cheek by jowl with its old architecture. But even at first impressions, it’s easy to spot that its townscape is laid out in a Spanish quadricula.

Everything revolves around the 1800s baroque church of St. John the Baptist. Across the road are the centennial school of St. Louise de Marillac & the City Hall that are reminiscent of American period state architecture from the mid-20 th century.

Just around the bend is a heritage house that dates back to 1868 done in the classic “bahay na bato” colonial construction. In the American Period it became the office of the Bell, Smith & Company, an abaca trading firm that reminds us today of the city’s affluent past. Today, the heirs of then famous poet, Angela Manalang-Gloria own it.

While there’s not many of its kind left in old Spanish strongholds in the country, interestingly, Tabaco City has kept its cemetery chapel intact. It is called Cimburrio, built in dark volcanic stones & rock similar to the church.

Tabaco’s Natural Allures

As much as my love for fleeting sunsets, I am fascinated with waterfalls too. In the foothills of Mt. Masaraga is Oras Falls, the city’s only waterfall. It may not be plunging high but it’s definitely never short of beauty & fun.

But what’s a trip to Tabaco City without visiting its famed San Miguel Island? This side of the city is lovely with quite a few local resorts around. But there’s one spot here that not many tourists know about — Punta.

It is soaked in the dramatics of coconut trees & tall cogon grass, the murmurs of the waves & the castaway feel. And if you come in at the right time, Mayon in full view wouldn’t be too bad for a background.

With everything that I did for a week here, I have to confess that I spent most of my time eating around. Sorry, overeating around. Laing, Bicol Express & Pinangat are a staple food here. They’re irresistible & so are DJC’s halo-halo, sinapot & pili brittle.

But if there is one food that’s very Tabaceño, dig for marcasotes, an effin’ yummy muffin. Created by the Borganio family in the 60s, they’re still baking it the traditional way today in giant claypots.

Tabaco City is a quaint town in the face of a bustling modern world. Most people still go for home-cooked lunch & dig into Sunday markets. They still pause for the angelus & takes joy in bygone style padyak rides.

It may not be the prettiest place & not even the most famous. But somewhere, somehow, there is something about this city that captures your heart & tickles your imagination. Yes, because Albay is Tabaco too.

Sorsogon is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a countryside ambiance with a good mix of adventures — from island hopping and surfing to trekking mountains. As it’s often overshadowed by the neighboring province of Albay in Bicol Region, it is more relaxed and it offers a breath of fresh air.

Moreover, it’s a family-friendly destination, with many hotels and resorts and activities ideal for children.

How to get around

There are different ways to get to Sorsogon.

The closest airport to Sorsogon is Legazpi Airport in Albay. From there, take a bus or van to Sorsogon. Travel time is around 1.5-2 hours.

From Manila, there are various bus lines bound for Sorsogon. Fare is around P700-1300 and travel time is 12-14 hours depending on the bus type and your specific destination in Sorsogon.

You can get around the different municipalities via jeepneys, but the jeepney schedules are limited.

The best way to explore Sorsogon is by bringing your own vehicle or chartering a tricycle, jeepney, or van.

Best Tourist Spots in Sorsogon

Sorsogon is a province in Bicol Region offering diverse attractions. Here’s a rundown of places you can visit in Sorsogon.

Sorsogon City is the capital of the province. You can stop here to visit some of the city landmarks, including the Provincial Capitol Complex, Baywalk, and Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral. For those who want to know the history of Sorsogon, a visit to Museo Sorsogon is a must.

Several minutes away from the city, you can also find the Buhatan River which offers relaxing river cruises. Other nature spots include Paguriran Lagoon, Botong Twin Falls, and Mount Pulog which features a majestic lake at the summit.

Sorsogon City also has nice hotels and resorts for staycation.

Matnog is a top destination in Sorsogon. It has a busy seaport used to get to other places in the Visayan Region, such as Samar.

It’s also famous for its island hopping activity , where you’ll get to see the famed pinkish sands of Subic Beach and Tikling Island, as well as Calintaan Cave and Juag Lagoon Sanctuary.

Matnog highlights the beauty of the beaches in Sorsogon. It’s a must-see when you’re in this province.

Bulusan is a great place for adventure lovers.

You can trek to the summit of Mount Bulusan , one of the most active volcanoes in the country. It has a crater traditionally known as “Blackbird Lake”, which is a void surrounded by rocky ridges producing sulfuric stream. The activity starts by kayaking from Bulusan Lake until reaching the jump-off point to the trail to the summit. This climb is doable as a day hike but most often as an overnight hike.

As Mount Bulusan is active, it’s best to consult with the tourism office first whether it’s safe and open for trekking. As of the recent years, it’s been closed for safety purposes.

For the non-climbers, you can visit Bulusan Volcano National Park , which sits at the foot of the volcano, where you can ride a boat or kayak across the lake. Another destination that is worth visiting is Zoe’s Resort and Eco-Adventure Park , which offers various outdoor activities and also features three waterfalls (Kambal Busay Falls, Hidden Falls, and Hulugan Falls).

For those who like the off-the-beaten path, there are lesser-known waterfalls in the area, including Bayugin Falls, Nasipit Falls, and Palogtoc Falls.

Located close to Bulusan, Irosin is gifted with natural hot and cold springs where you can relax. Some of the resorts you can visit include San Benon Hot Spring Resort, Mateo Hot & Cold Spring Resort, Nature Hot Spring Resort, and Tropical Hot Spring Paradise.

You can also visit the Valley View Park, which offers a nice view of rice fields and Mount Bulusan.

Gubat is one of the lesser-known surfing destinations in the Philippines. Rizal Beach has strong waves that are ideal for beginner and pro surfers. This is generally a good place to chill, beach bum, and surf.

Most people visit Donsol to for its whale shark watching activity . Unlike that in Oslob (Cebu) , here you will need to look for the whale sharks in the wild which makes it friendlier to the wildlife. This is a seasonal activity that runs from October to May.

Donsol is also used as a jump-off point to Manta Bowl, a prominent diving site nestled between Donsol and Ticao Island in Masbate. Manta Bowl features a huge colony of manta rays, that it’s tagged as the Manta Ray Capital of the Philippines.

Aside from these activities, you can also go on a firefly river tour at night.

The ones mentioned above are the most interesting spots in Sorsogon. There are other places you can see.

Barcelona is known for St. Joseph Church (also called Barcelona Church), an 18th-century church made from corals. Alongside the church are old ruins and the mandatory Barcelona signage. There are other tourist spots being established in Barcelona, such as Biyong Spring Resort.

Juban is known for its Spanish-era houses. The houses are designed with concrete ground floor and wooden top floors, with sliding windows made from capiz shells.

Prieto Diaz has caves you can explore: the Pinanaan Cave and Nagsurok Cave. With several coastal communities, it also has beaches including Lebanon Beach and Tutin Beach. You can also head to Sabang Beach and take a boat to Halabang Lapis, a naked island visible during high tide.

Magdalena also has nice white-sand beaches, including Olango Beach and Bigo Beach. Magdalena is off-the-beaten-path so this is a good option if you’re looking for a low-key beach destination.

Wow! This is a detailed travel itinerary of Sorsogon. Everything is here. I felt the same when I traveled to Caramoan- long travel hours but the view is all worth it. The weather looks gloomy in your photos, good thing you were able to do some activities. I heard about Pink beach too, is it nice in personal? :) will bookmark this guide for future travel plans. Pink beach feels like Boracay-- but pink! Haha. Yes it was scary actually when we visited, one side was sunny and the other side was scary gloomy. But overall, perfect stay.

The City of Fun and Adventure, Legazpi City is located in the province of Albay in the Bicol Region. Around 532 kilometers South of Metro Manila  and around 60 kilometers from the province of Sorsogon, it serves as Bicol’s center of transportation, education, health services, commerce, and tourism and is the capital city of Albay.

Best Time to Go to Legazpi 

Legazpi City has a tropical rainforest climate and experiences a considerable amount of rainfall every year. January is the coolest month while May and June are the hottest months. 

Weather-wise, the best time to visit is during the summer months between March through May. This way, you can make the most out of the many outdoor activities available. If you wish to experience the Ibalong Festival though, you should visit when it happens in August.

How to Get to Legazpi

Legazpi is known as the gateway to Bicol because of its central location in the region. The city is also very accessible. You can choose among various modes of transportation via land and air.

Flying to Legazpi from Manila and Cebu

Air travel, such as a  Manila to Bicol flight , is the fastest and most convenient way to get to Legazpi City. Travel time for a Manila to Legazpi flight usually takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. There are daily flights to and from Manila  and Bicol International Airport. Alternatively, you can also catch flights to Legazpi  from Cebu  via Philippine Airlines and  Cebu Pacific . A Cebu to Legazpi flight usually takes an hour of travel time.

Traveling to Legazpi from Manila or parts of Luzon by Bus

Aside from taking flights to Bicol , you can take either an air-conditioned or non-air-conditioned bus from Manila to Legazpi City and vice versa. There are several bus liners that schedule daily trips to the city.

There are different bus stations or points of origin in Manila depending on which bus liners you choose. You can ride a bus from any of these points: Araneta Center Bus Station, EDSA-Cubao, LRT-Buendia via EDSA-Pasay, Ermita or Alabang. All these buses will take you to the Legazpi Grand Central Terminal. Travel time is usually between 9 - 12 hours.

Tricycles are three-wheeled motorcycle cabs. You will usually find them waiting for passengers at a designated tricycle stop. Take note that tricycles can only take you to designated locations.

Tricycles usually need to fill their cab with four to eight passengers before leaving. If you don't want to wait, you'll need to rent the tricycle and pay for the corresponding rate.

Jeepneys and UV Express Vans

Riding a jeepney is the cheapest way to travel within the city. They usually follow a designated route. You can look at the sides of the jeepneys or on the signboard on the window to find out what their route is.

UV Express vans are air-conditioned utility vehicles that usually seat 10 - 12 passengers. Like jeepneys, they also follow a designated route.

You can find a jeepney and UV Express terminal at the LKY Metro Transport and Lifestyle Hub, a small commercial center right across from the Legazpi Grand Central Terminal.

You can usually find taxi cabs at the airport or some of the malls. You may also choose to call the taxi company directly if you want a taxi for hire similar to renting a car.

St. Gregory the Great Cathedral

Want to see one of the oldest Roman Catholic Churches in the country? This was built by Spanish missionaries in the 1580s using wooden materials. Improvements were made to it until it was also destroyed when Mount Mayon erupted. It was reconstructed again in 1834 then became a cathedral in 1951. You can find it easily at the Old Albay District.

Peñaranda Park

Also called the Freedom Park, this is a Spanish-style plaza dedicated to the first Governor of Albay, Jose Ma. Peñaranda. It is surrounded by the Albay Capitol, Legazpi City Hall and the St. Gregory the Great Cathedral. It's a nice place to relax or people-watch.

Albay Astrodome

If you want to catch some of the biggest events in Legazpi, chances are you'll find them here. Inaugurated in 1997, it's a multi-purpose, domed sports and event stadium that seats 6,000 people.

Embarcadero de Legazpi

Go here for an array of lifestyle options, such as dining, shopping, and entertainment. A premier waterfront development, this is the place to be to enjoy the city's nightlife.

You can even try kart racing and the 350-meter zipline. Soon to rise is a 90-feet high skywalk that will give you an amazing view of Mount Mayon and the cityscape.

Bicol Express

A spicy and creamy Filipino dish from the Bicol region is known as "Bicol Express." This well-liked dish, which is renowned for its spicy and savory flavor, is cooked with pork, coconut milk, shrimp paste, and copious amounts of chilies, resulting in a delicious explosion of flavors.

Ingredients:

1 pound of thinly sliced pork 2 cups coconut milk 1/4 cup shrimp paste 4 minced garlic cloves 1 chopped onion 6 to 8 chopped green chile peppers (change the amount of heat according to preference), and 2 teaspoons frying oil are the ingredients, a little salt and pepper

Instructions:

1. In a big pan, heat the cooking oil over medium heat.

2. Sauté the onion and garlic until transparent and aromatic.

3. Include the pork slices and heat until just faintly browned.

4. Add the shrimp paste and simmer for an additional 2 to 3 minutes.

5. Stir in the green chile peppers, cooking for an additional 2 to 3 minutes.

6. Add the coconut milk, then bring the concoction to a boil.

7. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and the pork is tender.

8. To taste, add salt and pepper to the dish.

9. Present hot alongside steamed rice.

Laing is a delectable Bicolano meal distinguished by its creamy and spicy flavor. It is made with dried taro leaves that have been cooked in a flavorful coconut milk sauce with chiles and shrimp paste. This delicious meal pairs beautifully with steamed rice and may be eaten as a side or a main course.

1 lb dried taro leaves 2 cups coconut milk 1/4 cup shrimp paste 4 cloves minced garlic 1 onion; 2-3 pieces chopped green chile peppers (adjust the amount of heat required) 1 tablespoon cooking oil and salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. In a large pan, heat the cooking oil over medium heat.

3. After cooking for 2–3 minutes, add the shrimp paste.

4. Add the green chile peppers, stir, and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes.

5. Carefully add the dried taro leaves to the pan without stirring.

6. Spoon the coconut milk on top of the taro leaves and then bring the dish to a boil.

7. Once the taro leaves are soft and the sauce has thickened, reduce the heat, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 30 to 40 minutes. To avoid itching, don't stir the taro leaves while they're cooking.

9. Serve hot with steaming rice.

Pinangat is a typical Bicolano meal made with finely chopped taro leaves, coconut milk, shrimp, and crabmeat wrapped in gabi leaves and cooked to perfection. It is sometimes referred to as "tinuktok."

Ingredients

1 lb. chopped taro leaves 1 cup coconut milk 1 cup peeled and diced shrimp 1 cup crabmeat 2 cups gabi leaves 1 chopped onion 3 minced garlic cloves 3 pieces of green chile peppers 2 teaspoons of shrimp paste A little salt and pepper

1. Combine the taro leaves, shrimp, crabmeat, onion, garlic, and shrimp paste in a big bowl. Mix thoroughly.

2. Include green chili peppers and coconut milk in the mixture. Mix thoroughly after adding salt and pepper to taste.

3. pour two gabi leaves on a flat surface, and in the center, pour 2 to 3 teaspoons of the filling.

4. In order to keep the filling from pouring out, fold the leaves to form a pocket and secure the corners.

5. Continue the process until the entire mixture has been used.

6. Place the pinangat that has been wrapped in a steamer, cover it, and steam for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the leaves are cooked and the filling is soft.

7. Serve warm with freshly cooked rice.

Here’s a video using different meat ingredients, but the process is still the same to come up with the pinangat.
