Visit Poznan Poland city guide

The city of Poznan is a bit of a hidden gem on the Poland tourist route. If you’ve never thought of visiting Poznan, this guide is here to convince you that it is well worth a visit 🙂

Poznań is a lovely city with a chilled vibe that I discovered on my long summer trip around Poland.

I stayed there three whole weeks and enjoyed it so much I could have easily stayed even longer.

Poznan city guide

It has a picturesque old town, plenty of green spaces, beautiful architecture and a fine nightlife scene.

There aren’t too many tourists in Poznan. It’s a bit smaller than Wroclaw or Krakow and easily falls into the category of beautiful-but-overlooked travel destinations.

I think it has a great choice of things to do, see and eat, but it doesn’t overwhelm you like bigger cities might.

It has a compact and walkable city centre and part of its charm is the laid-back atmosphere I felt the moment I got off the train.

Poznan is located somewhere in between Warsaw and Berlin.

The closeness to Berlin is definitely felt in Poznan. The hipster vibes (for lack of a better term…), the excellent nightlife and the alternative culture scene make Poznan very unique.

I had been told before arriving there that Poznan was the most liberal and open-minded city in Poland and I was happy to discover for myself what that meant.

In the current conservative political atmosphere, the city is as gay-friendly as a Polish city can get.

It has its own anarchist bookshop called Zemsta (that’s also a great vegan cafe) and it even has an LGBTQ+ hostel, called Hostel Stonewall. It’s also a super vegan-friendly place (which is actually very common in Poland).

Poznan essential travel tips

Where to stay in poznan.

Poznan apartment

I stayed in this apartment for three weeks and can wholeheartedly recommend it. It’s about a 10 minutes walk from the central train and bus station.

The old town and most attractions are within a short walking distance as well.

It’s a nicely designed and fully equipped 1 bedroom flat with a nice living room and all the amenities, fast wifi, a nice shower and a comfortable bed. It was certainly a great choice.

Hotels in Poznan

If you prefer a hotel, here’s a selection of hotels in Poznan for different budgets:

Budget : Ibis Poznań Stare Miasto is a highly rated 2-star hotel close to the old town. It’s an affordable choice if you want to stay in a central location.

Mid-range : Palazzo Rosso is a 3.5 star hotel right next to the old town square.

Luxury :  PURO Hotel Poznań Stare Miasto is a beautiful 4-star hotel located minutes from the old town square.

Poznan city tours

Poznan is the kind of place you should get to know with a local guide.

I recommend this free walking tour , which I took a couple of days after arriving in Poznan.

It covers the history and the main attractions in the centre and the old town, including some beautiful buildings and parks.

It’s a tip based tour, so you pay nothing when you book, but you tip the guide as much as you want at the end of the tour.

The free tour isn’t available every day (I visited in summer and it was only available during weekends), so if you’re short on time you may want to book a private tour instead.

You can take a walking tour that covers the old town, with historical anecdotes and local legends. It can also be adapted to your preferences, and you can choose between a 2,3 or 5 hour tour.

If you want to see more parts of the city beyond the old town, take a private tour that includes more districts and also offers hotel pickup and drop-off.

Another option that’s more affordable is an electric bus tour of Poznan . In just under 2 hours you’ll get to see the city highlights with an audioguide.

How to get to Poznan

Poznan city tours

The city of Poznan is well connected to other cities in Poland and to some other cities in Europe.

By plane to Poznan Airport

Poznan has its own airport called Poznań – Ławica Henryk Wieniawski Airport (POZ).

There are direct flights to Poznan from many European cities. Check Omio for the flights currently available .

Getting from the airport to the city:

Bus lines 159 and  148 and night line 222 run between the airport and the city centre. The ride takes about 25 minutes.

Private transfer taxis are available at the airport, through taxi apps or by booking online in advance.

Trains to Poznan

It’s very convenient to get to Poznan by train from other cities in Poland, as well as from Berlin and Moscow. Check the Polish State Railways website for timetables and prices.

The central train station (Poznan Glowny) and central bus station are both close to each other and quite close to the city centre.

Buses to Poznan

The central bus station (Poznan PKS) is next to the train station.

There are long distance buses from other cities in Poland, as well as cities in other European countries, such as Berlin, Prague and London.

Check Omio and Flixbus to find bus connections.

How long to stay in Poznan

Poznan is perfect for a city break or a long weekend.

If you have more time, I suggest you stay for a 5 days to explore the city and the area.

6 reasons to visit Poznan

Beautiful architecture.

Poznan Old Town architecture

One of the first places you’re likely to visit in Poznan is the colourful and charming old market square, or Stary Rynek.

Some of the houses in the square were renovated after WWII. The square looks quite convincing as an old European market square, given that some buildings had their facades repainted only in the later 20th century.

Poznan is a big Art Nouveau hub in Poland. I knew little about that before I got there, but once I was there I couldn’t stop looking up….

The main districts to find beautiful Art Nouveau buildings are Jezyce and Lazarz.

I creadted a guide to Art Nouveau in Poznan .

One of the most interesting contemporary buildings in Poznan is Stary Browar.

It’s an old brewery converted into a shopping centre with an art gallery. Both the interior and exterior are impressive.

Poznan Stary Browar interior

You can explore a selection of modernist buildings in Poznan with an audio guide made by the tourist information office.

Great nightlife

Hah Poznan nightlife

Only 3 hours away from Berlin, Poznan has a great nightlife scene.

There’s a good selection of clubbing options every weekend.

Here are some of the best places to party in Poznan:

Tama –  An excellent club close to the city centre with top techno DJs.

Projekt LAB – Underground music club with electronic and alternative music.

Hah Poznan – A popular gay club with 2 bars, pop and electronic music parties.

Lokum – Queer club and bar with two nearby locations in the city centre, with house, techno and pop parties, plus drag shows and other events.

KontenerART   – A chilled place for drinks, live music and DJs by the river, open during the summer.

The beautiful urban nature in Poznan

Lake Rusalka Poznan

Poznan has a lot of green spaces. Many of them are in the city centre or within walking distance from the centre.

It has some lovely city parks and gardens, my favourite of which is the Chopin Garden.

The largest urban park in Poznan is called Park Cytadela w Poznaniu, just north of the old town.

Park Sołacki is another charming green space with a couple of ponds.

It’s not too far from the magical Lake Rusałka.

If you visit the lake, make sure to also visit the beautiful Poznań Botanical Garden nearby. It’s free to visit and open late.

A different kind of botanical garden is located in another part of the city. It’s called Palmiarnia Poznańska, or The Palm House and has a collection of tropical plants.

Lake Malta is a large artificial lake that’s fun to visit, especially for water sports.

Poznan’s unique museums

The Musical Instruments Museum in Poznan

Poznan has some unusual museums catering for very specific interests.

My personal favourite was the Poznan Museum of Musical Instruments .

Beginning with ancient music and progressing through the centuries to 20th century avant garde, it has some very interesting items on display, some of which I’ve never seen before.

The top floor of the museum is dedicated to instruments from different countries and continents, as well as regions of Poland.

You can visit with an audio guide for the full experience.

The Museum of Applied Arts in Poznan has a large collection of crafts, furniture, textiles, jewellry and all sorts of decorative items from Poland. The range from the Middle Ages to contemporary times.

This museum is also popular for its viewing point on the roof. Take the lift up to the roof on a sunny day and get a view of the city from above. The old town’s colourful houses look wonderful from up there.

Another unique museum in Poznan is the Museum of Historical Costume featuring 19th century costumes and accessories.

It’s easy to take day trips from Poznan

Poznan is a convenient base for day trips. I recommend taking the train if you want to plan your own trip, it’s fast and efficient. to save time and hassle, you can also book a private tour that includes hotel pick up and drop off.

The easiest day trips from Poznan that I found are:

Torun – A mediaeval city with a charming old town that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can go there on the train, it’s about 1.5 hours from Poznan, and explore by yourself.

You can also take a private tour with hotel pickup, transportation and a local guide. It is available in 7 languages.

Wroclaw – Though I think Wroclaw deserves more than a day trip, if you want to see it while you’re staying in Poznan, it’s doable.

To explore it by yourself, I recommend taking the train (the ride takes about 2 hours each way) and then booking a place on a walking tour. There’s a free walkign tour as well as some private tours that will save you time .

Bydgoszcz – Poland’s 8th largest city, about 1.5 hours away from Poznan on the train. It has a charming old town, some unusual museums and a water tram.

Impressive street art murals in Poznan

Poznan Street Art Srodka

The street art in Poznan is scattered around the city. It can take a few hours to see all the murals, but some of them are well worth looking for.

You can ask at the tourist information centre for a street art map.

This 3D painting on 3 Śródka Street is probably the most famous piece of street art in Poznan.

Around the corner from it, on 17  Ostrówek Street, the Green Symphony is an interactive street art installation that plays music when it rains.

Another noteworthy artwork is located on Feliksa Nowowiejskiego 17 (look up to find it). It’s a mural of a woman holding together the Polish flag as a symbol of internal divides in Polish society.

Have a look at this Instagram account for great street art finds from Poznan.

When is the best time to visit Poznan?

The best time to visit Poznan is during the summer months of June to August when the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for exploring the city’s attractions and enjoying outdoor activities. The city also hosts several festivals and events during this time, such as the Malta Festival, which is one of the largest art and culture festivals in Poland.

However, if you prefer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October). These seasons offer milder temperatures and fewer tourists, making it easier to enjoy the city’s sights and sounds without the crowds.

Winters (December to February) can be very cold with snow and ice, but the festive holiday markets and decorations can make for a charming winter vacation.

Long Weekend: Poznan

With a resplendent Market Square, two castles, ribald nightlife and even a touch of hipster culture (check out the container village on the beach!), Kai Warmbold says it’s time to pay attention to Poznan…

travel club poznan

Located almost exactly between Warsaw and Berlin , Poznań is naturally overshadowed by these two major central European capitals. Yet even when compared to other Polish tourist magnets such as Kraków , Wrocław or Gdansk, none of which significantly surpass Poznań either in terms of either size or attractions, Poznań remains unjustly overlooked by international travellers.

Life is always good on Poznan's market square

Serving as Poland’s capital in the 13th century and the epicenter of the 1956 uprisings against Communist rule, there’s no lack of heritage and culture in the city, which has been swapped between Poland and the previously Prussian part of Germany several times in its torrid history. And while a constant change of citizenship rarely benefit a city’s well-being, it did bring Poznan some gifts twofold – including castles. Mainly for the reason that no classy ruler would go to bed with the enemy, rather less take its chambers.

Most visitors, upon “discovering” Poznan, see it as the overlooked little beauty that it is: it brings a rich variety of cultural offerings to the table which, coupled with friendly locals who are not yet fed up with tourist crowds, is a recipe for a fantastic weekend break away.

Best of the Beaten Track

One great thing about the city’s main attractions is that they’ll spare you blisters. That’s not to say Poznan is short of classical sights worth mentioning, just that the city’s compactness allows you to cover a lot of them quickly, as most are within walking distance of the Stary Rynek , which is Polish for old market square. Right here you’ll immediately locate two of the city’s architectural pin ups. One of these is a neat row of Merchants’ Houses decked out in various hues, the other though will only show itself once a day at 12am, but don’t worry – dozens of spectators gathering around the beautiful Renaissance-era Town Hall will give you a heads up. To be fair, the sight of two wooden goats leaving the building’s tower might prove to be a bit of a let-down considering the keen anticipation of the camera-wielding crowds. But it will at least leave you wondering where all those otherwise unnoticeable tourists suddenly sprang from.

Goats o'clock

Of the two aforementioned fortresses, the recently reconstructed Royal Castle is just around the corner, while its German counterpart, the Imperial Castle not only comes with a roller-coaster history as bumpy as the city’s cobbles, but marks the starting point of a 10-15 minute stroll to the centre. Following this path, you’ll also pass by the monument of the 1956 uprising against the Communist rule, Adam-Mickiewicz-University and Plac Wolności.

If you’ve still got more time on your hands and are up for a longer walk take a hike to Park Cytadela , not necessarily for the Poznań Army Museum, but for an impressive array of artistic sculptures and landscape architecture spread out over the 250 acres terrain. In any case you shouldn’t miss out on the water framed district of Ostrów Tumski, which is the oldest part of the city and harbours the Archcathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul , the state’s oldest cathedral.

Once you’re done with the sights you might want to wander over to the recreational area of Lake Malta , where fun things to do include water sports, the zoo and hiring bikes. The lakeside really comes alive during June when the Malta Festival brings a wave of street theatre to its shores.

To explore the districts of the Old Town and Ostrow Tumski, plus Srodka (see below) in more depth you might want to consider this private guided tour by Get Your Guide .

Hipster’s Guide

From there you can actually just cross the Bishop Jordan Bridge at the futuristic Porta Posnania to get to Śródka district, a neat little neighbourhood in which hidden street art, local shops and coffee places leave their imprint on the cityscape. One of the nicest places here is the cafe La Ruina which, at the risk of spoiling any surprises, even comes with a cool retro, but heavily under-advertised cinema hall in the back.

Don't La Ruina the surprise....

Śródka is far from a huge area but you’ll be able to spot other places of similar charm elsewhere in Poznan as recent developments in the new hipster capitals of Berlin and Warsaw have left their mark on their smaller neighbour as well. And although other wonderful comfort zones like the Taczaka 20 await you, why not go all the way and have a look at a local marketplace ? Two of the most authentic are the food market at Rynek Jezycki and Otwarty Market, both right in the heart of Jeżyce , the artsy student district (also worth wondering around). Just make sure to brush up on your Polish numbers for bargaining with the market traders, or have Google Translate handy.

Experience & Events

Sure, we covered the hipster part already, but few places in Poznań would fit that category better than KontenerArt on the Warta riverbanks. From May till October, people gather on this artificial beach, where old doors serve as tables, wooden pallets as seats and – the name sort of gives it away already – construction containers as common ground for art galleries, bars and late night parties.

A touch of Berlin in Poland....

Even though the international film festival Transatlantyk sadly got moved to Lodź last year, the theater-themed Malta Festival at the end of June still turns Plac Wolności into a square thriving with cultural activity by day and a party stronghold at night. Out of the several smaller events Ethno Port , dedicated to world music and international art every summer, as well as the Ice Sculpture Festival in December, both deserve a visit.

While locals, and Poles in general, are crazy about football, you might think twice before paying a visit to Stadion Miejski, home ground to the multiple-time national champions Lech Poznań – named after the alleged founder of Poland, just like the local beer brand . Not only do the local fans have a fearsome reputation, making attendance not without risk, but also the vagaries of the Polish ticketing system (you need to register as a fan of the club) makes it difficult for an outsider to attend matches. Still, it’s well worth trekking out to the new stadium rebuilt for the Euro 2012 tournament to admire a great white elephant (it’s 43,000 seats are rarely 50% filled).

Pillow Talk

Bad news first: because of Poznan being relatively unknown, the chances of finding a hostel packed with sociable international backpackers are sometimes pretty slim. That being said, Very Berry Hostel also shines with other qualities: central location, homey interior and relatively empty dorms at a reasonable price. A bit more pricey than the typical Polish hostel, due to only having private rooms, is Sleep In Hostel & Apartments , which has a great industrial design. For those not being held back by any budget limitations, the internationally-inspired and individually designed rooms of the City Soleil Boutique Hotel is a fantastic choice, while the 5-star Blow Up Hall 50 50 is so artsy it actually has its own gallery inside its red bricked former brewery halls. For the best prices on almost every hotel in town, try Laterooms.com .

Most Poles will probably agree that you haven’t really seen the country unless you’ve tasted its food. Pierogi are an essential rite of passage for any serious Poland trip and Pyszna Chatka serves up a veritable array of variations of these quintessentially Polish stuffed dumplings. For a taste of rural Poland head back to the Jezyce district where the rustic charm of Zagroda Bamberska and its homemade cuisine awaits. Whilst for an upmarket and modern twist on the nation’s gastronomy either Muga or Concordia Taste is a fine bet. Cacao Republika and the aforementioned La Ruina are equally pleasant little breakfast places. And if you’re just searching for something easy on the wallet, the Food Patrol Burger Truck opposite the Galeria MM shopping mall will provide you with a treat. The place’s popularity among locals might keep you waiting up to half an hour.

Some of the city's finest pierogi

The epicenter of Poznan’s nightlife is its old market Stary Rynek and its surroundings, where even blind men can locate a number of bars and clubs within seconds. Of those, Pijalnia Wódki i Piwa stands out. Noisy and notoriously overcrowded even in the early hours, many night-owls – more or less secretly – still end up here regularly. You might also drop by for a herring and a beer, if only for the sight of foreigners full-throatedly trying to do karaoke in Polish. Two corners further you’ll find Klub Dragon , probably my favourite place for a casual drink. If you squeeze your way through the cozy interior, either its windows or a passage through the toilets get you to the Dragon’s heart, a charming backyard. From there a stairway further leads up to a tiny restaurant and part-time concert venue, which might provide a laid-back jazz jam, an almost unattended experimental post-minimal washing-machine-beat-drumset-session, or anything in between. Apart from the clubs in the immediate proximity of Stary Rynek, where you should expect typical mainstream club music, with a wee bit more fondness for some rock hits past their prime than the typical western European city, Poznań also has a proper handful of more alternative clubs spread around the inner city. Most of those are dedicated to the slowly, yet steadily rising Polish electronic scene . Worth checking out are in particular LAS , SQ Klub and the successor of the minimalistic 8 bitow, Nowe Bity .

Dwa piwa poprosze!

Getting There

Five kilometres west of the city lies Henryk Wieniawski Airport, which is served amongst others by Ryanair and WizzAir. There might be even cheaper alternatives though, if you happen to be from Central Europe yourself, as the convenient geographic location is a blessing. Trains or one of the several bus companies going from Berlin to Warsaw or vice-versa — Flixbus , Lux Express and Polskibus , all stop en route in Poznan. Other than these two obvious destinations, affordable direct trains also leave for any other popular national city spots such as Kraków , Wrocław , Gdansk, Lublin , Łódź and Szczecin. Ironically, of all websites the German railway company Bahn are the most reliable when it comes to live timetables for all intercity and regional connections.

Due to an extreme shortage of blogs or websites that regularly focus on Poznań, the city’s official websites Poznan.pl and Poznan.travel are pretty much all you can go for. Of those, the latter proves to be much more visitor-tailored no matter what the reason for your trip might be. One great exception in the deserted Poznań foreign language-blogosphere is the Polish/English-bilingual PULSBLOG , which occasionally covers Warsaw as well but has plenty of insights on Poznań’s food, hidden treasures and city culture.

The Poland issue of Lonely Planet issue has a twelve page section on Poznań, but is hardly exhaustive. Since most of the better novels set in the city haven’t been translated into English, you might have better luck encountering familiar places by either reading a biography of one of the city’s more famous former residents like Paul von Hindenburg , or ingratiate yourself with the locals by finding a book about their contributions to cracking the Nazi Enigma code (there is a monument and museum in Poznan ) or shooting down the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain .

Silver Screen

Being an overlooked city means that cineasts searching for international films featuring Poznań really have to do some digging. It is therefore rather ironic, that even in its arguably most notable movie appearance the city could have gotten much more exposure, had its producers just stayed completely true to the source material. The 1942 comedy To Be or Not to Be by Academy Award Winner Ernst Lubitsch about a bunch of theater actors in then Nazi-occupied Warsaw scheming and disguising in order to support the Polish Resistance is partly shot in Poznań’s opera, the Teatr Wielki . The Melchior Lengyl theater script the movie was based on however did not even take place in Warsaw, but Poznań.

10 Reasons To Visit Poznan If You're In Poland

Discover the hidden gem of Poznan! We give you 10 reasons why this Polish city should be on your travel list. Don't miss out on the magic!

Poland is one of the most underrated countries in Europe. Though it gets a lot of tourists every year, it’s not the main place people from abroad think to travel to when visiting Europe . But there are plenty of reasons to give Poland a visit , and it’s not necessarily in a visitor’s best interest to go to one of the bigger cities.

For folks traveling to Poland or somewhere nearby, consider giving Poznan a visit. This is one of the lesser-visited cities in Poland, but it offers a rich history, tons of attractions, and a genuinely warm vibe. It’s got a bit of something for everyone, and it’s all relatively affordable compared to other European cities. Here are 10 reasons why travelers should visit Poznan, Poland.

RELATED: 12 Things To Do When Visiting Poznan, Poland

10 There’s Plenty to Do

Since Poznan isn’t as big as other Polish cities, many people overlook it or assume it doesn’t have as much to offer. But this is hardly the case.

Poznan offers many attractions for tourists and locals alike. Visitors can see old architecture by checking out Old Market Square or visiting the Imperial Castle or Town Hall. There are new and old zoos for animal lovers, and even a botanical garden as well as a palm house.

9 Visitors Can Even Go Skiing

One of the most surprising things people can do in Poznan is skiing. The city isn’t known for getting a lot of snow or being surrounded by big mountains, but it’s created an artificial slope for winter sports at Malta Ski . This year-round amusement park offers tons of rides, like rollercoasters, in addition to skiing.

8 It’s Not A Tourist Hotspot

Poznan isn’t as big a draw for tourists as other Polish cities like Kraków, Warsaw, and Wrocław. Visitors will be hard-pressed to find a tourist shop, but this isn’t a bad thing. It gives guests a more authentic experience. Poznan has a local, friendly ambiance, which allows visitors to see what it’s like to live in a little Polish city.

7 The City Is Inexpensive

For visitors coming from North America, most of Poland is going to be inexpensive. But Poznan is especially easy on the budget. Since it’s not a tourist hot spot, hotels, restaurants, and attractions are more reasonably priced.

6 There’s A Free Walking Tour

Like many European cities, Poznan offers a free walking tour that allows visitors to see the city’s main spots and learn about its history. It’s a tip-based tour, so guests pay what they can or feel motivated to at the end of the tour. Guests should book online in advance, as the free tour tends to book up quickly.

5 There’s A Variety Of Cuisine

When visiting Poland, guests should for sure try local cuisine, like pierogis. Since Poznan is relatively inexpensive, it’s possible to find traditional Polish food for cheap and in huge qualities. But there are also tons of other types of cuisine, too. Poznan has a vibrant ex-pat community, so it’s easy to find food from all over the world . Some of the city’s best restaurants aren’t even Polish.

4 Tons Of History To Learn About

Poznan is a great place to explore for history buffs. It has centuries of history and was even the capital of Poland in the 9th century. A great way to learn in-depth about the city’s story is to visit the Museum of the History of Poznan .

But guests shouldn’t stop there. Poznan offers a variety of museums, so many that it’s impossible to get through them in a single visit. Guests interested in learning and history should also visit the National Museum, the Poznan Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Armored Weapons, and the Museum of Historical Costume.

3 There’s Plenty Of Green Space

Poznan may be a bustling city, but it has plenty of greenery for folks to enjoy. In fact, green spaces take up 25% of the city’s land . One of the city’s most well-known green spaces is Cytadela Parks, which offers everything from stunning foliage, paved pathways, eating options, war memorials, and a military museum.

2 Poznan Is LGBTQ+ Friendly

Unfortunately, gay marriage isn’t recognized in Poland at the moment. But that doesn’t mean the country doesn’t have a vibrant LGBTQ+ community.

Poznan is known for having one of the only gay bars/clubs in the country, Lokum Stonewall . It’s a great place for folks to come have a coffee or alcoholic beverage and socialize, or take advantage of their events, which include dancing on the weekends.

1 There’s An Airport In The City

Poznan is a convenient place to travel since there are so many ways to enter the city. There’s Poznan Airport (POZ), which offers many direct flights from nearby European cities for cheap. This also makes Poznan a great home base for folks looking to travel to other cities, even if just for a few days.

There are also many buses and trains traveling from Poznan to nearby cities, which are often even more cost-effective.

Fans in Tottenham end APPLAUD Man City goal and do the ‘Poznan’ after strike that could deny Arsenal title

FANS in the Tottenham end applauded and did the Poznan as their team conceded a goal to Manchester City - knowing full well it could end up denying Arsenal the title.

The amazing scenes occurred early in the second half as Spurs lost 2-0 to City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium .

Fans in the Spurs end applauded when Man City scored at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Ange Postecoglou and Pep Guardiola watched on as their two sides played out an intriguing first 45 minutes.

Yet the game was bizarrely quiet, with Tottenham fans barely making a noise.

Pundit Gary Neville declared: "They've sent Man City to sleep."

While commentator Peter Drury reflected on the "hypnotic" atmosphere.

He said on the stroke of half-time: "It is the oddest of games. Odd particularly for its quietness."

But it was City who eventually drew first blood with a cleverly-executed goal on the counter.

Some sloppy play from Spurs saw Kevin De Bruyne beat the offside trap and latch onto the ball.

He then fed a glorious pass across the box, with the ball finding Erling Haaland before being delicately put into the back of Tottenham's net.

The goal sent City's travelling fans wild, with a win putting the champs back above Arsenal into top spot.

But they weren't the only ones left jubilant by Haaland's effort.

City fans did the Poznan late on... and some Spurs fans were seen joining in

Some supporters in the Tottenham end were also seeing celebrating City's goal.

Home fans were left torn before kick-off over whether to support their own club, knowing a result would make Arsenal title favourites on the final day of the season.

But some clearly weren't bothered about rooting for City, with a few even spotted doing the Etihad club's 'Poznan' dance.

Viewers at home were tickled by the scenes, with many taking to X as a result.

One said: "Lmao the Tottenham fans are really celebrating Man City scoring against their team just cuz they don’t want rival Arsenal to win the league lmao love to see it."

Another declared: "They're happy I love them."

One noted: "Lol I don't believe this."

Another added: "Spurs fans having the best day of their lives in the stands."

Following Haaland's goal, Tottenham upped the intensity in their attempts to bag an equaliser.

And they very nearly made it 1-1 when Son Heung-min broke through clear on goal, only to shoot the ball straight at onrushing sub goalie Stefan Ortega.

Spurs' hopes were then ended late on when they gave away a penalty, which Haaland converted with aplomb for 2-0.

Ironically, as some Tottenham supporters got behind City on Tuesday, almost every Arsenal fan was rooting for Spurs to seal victory.

Ange Postecoglou is right to be furious – Tottenham fans showed small-club mentality

We saw the Poznan. Except it was coming from Tottenham Hotspur fans inside the stadium; not from Manchester City. Those Spurs supporters turned their backs on the pitch and bounced up and down in unison celebrating the first goal during their 2-0 loss .

It was a City goal that led to that reaction and so we had our answer. The acid test would always be what happened when City scored. Or Spurs. And so when the first goal arrived, early in the second-half, the extraordinary response said it all.

It angered Ange Postecoglou and what he said spoke to the heart of just what Spurs are and what they want to achieve and maybe what is holding them back. It was almost an existential dissection and it was anchored in fury.

Asked whether he wanted to give a positive spin, with foundations being in place Postecoglou angrily shot that down. “No, I think the last 48 hours has revealed to me that the foundations are fairly fragile, mate,” he said. “That’s just what I think. I just think the last 48 hours have revealed a fair bit to me. That’s all right. It just means I’ve got to go back to the drawing board with some things.”

What did he think of the fans chanting ‘Are you watching Arsenal ?’ after Erling Haaland ’s first goal? “I’m not interested, mate. I just don’t care,” Postecoglou said before adding, somewhat ominously: “It’s been an interesting exercise.”

It was about “outside [the club], inside, everywhere”. “Maybe I am just out of step,” Postecoglou continued before stating he just wanted to win and “so what other people, how they want to feel, and what their priorities are, are of zero interest to me”.

Ange is getting a little bit techie tonight 😬 Anyway, no drama mate, City win the league 🥳 all good in the hood mates, we're in the Europa League, see you at Sheffield #COYS pic.twitter.com/4O0UXgYd8i — Danny (@Spurserk) May 14, 2024

Who was he criticising? The fans? The club? The media? It felt like it was everyone. Pre-match and Postecoglou could not have been clearer. He had spoken of his disbelief that Spurs fans might actually want their team to lose this game , to spite Arsenal and damage their title hopes, and here it was happening in front of his eyes. He looked absolutely furious and disbelieving.

He had a point. What happened when Haaland tapped home – some Tottenham fans even clapped – felt like a small-club mentality. It might be argued it was belligerence but it signalled defeat and it ended Spurs’ dwindling hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

Surely that is what should have been pre-occupying them? Catching Aston Villa and finishing fourth – possible with a win as Villa had a trickier final day fixture away to Crystal Palace with Spurs at Sheffield United – had to be the priority in furthering their own ambitions.

Yes, it may have effectively handed Arsenal the title. Yes, it may have led to more songs and goading with them having last been champions 20 years ago when they gained a result at White Hart Lane. But, so what? Football is about winning. Not about worrying about rivals and Spurs have diminished themselves and Postecoglou’s reaction showed how he felt.

When that chant of “Are you watching Arsenal” rang around the South Stand it felt like a weight had been lifted. Instead it was a yoke being applied and an inferiority complex being confirmed.

Before that those fans did not know whether to laugh or cry; whether to be angry or militant or enjoy the painful absurdity of it all. And, so, instead they were subdued until City scored. This was as muted as it has ever been here. And that felt even worse.

It was surreal with Spurs and City half-and-half scarves being touted outside before kick-off and middle-aged men staring earnestly into the TV cameras up and down the Tottenham High Road declaring they would rather “sell their mother” than see their team help Arsenal win the Premier League.

“We’re not really here,” chanted the City supporters and it seemed like many of those home fans would have nodded in agreement. It did not look like they really wanted to be here. Or, once here, they did not know what to do.

Inside two minutes a loud rendition of “stand up if you hate Arsenal” rang around but it was not particularly intense. It was heard again after half an hour but by then the muscle memory of backing their team had slowly begun to kick in, a little.

Did they want their team to score? Did they want their team to win even if it switched the advantage to Arsenal in the title race? Certainly it felt, when they attacked, like they did even if they may have been responding by instinct rather than rationale. But it did not feel natural.

The City goal shifted the dynamic a little on the pitch and Spurs had chances even if a draw would not have been enough. If anything it was the worst result of all – it would still have meant they could not overtake Villa while it would have installed Arsenal as title favourites. No doubt they would have said it was, well, the most ‘Spursy’ thing to do especially as it would mean little for them and everything to their neighbours.

Instead it was Haaland who ended it from the penalty spot and the relief flooded around. This time both sets of fans sang “Are you watching Arsenal?” while there was a loud and prolonged chorus of “When the Spurs go marching on”. It riled Postecoglou even more. His interpretation? That was just defeatism not defiance. He had it right.

A merchandise stall outside Tottenham's stadium

Spurs fans doing the Poznan? Yes it’s petty, but also perfectly reasonable

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now!

STRANGER THINGS?

Whether it was the eerie silence occasionally punctuated by half-hearted chants of disparagement at the expense of Arsenal, Rodrigo Bentancur’s violent and protracted shoeing of a vacant dugout seat next to that occupied by a visibly frightened Bryan Gil, or Ange Postecoglou’s none-too-matey touchline exchange with a loud fan urging the Spurs boss to instruct his team to tank a contest they were probably going to lose anyway, Tuesday night’s match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was a decidedly weird affair. But then it was always going to be strange when a very sizeable percentage of Spurs fans were desperately hoping their team would lose against Manchester City, all the better to deal Arsenal’s chances of winning the title a potentially fatal hammer blow.

Indulge Football Daily as we go all biblical with an analogy. No matter what some sniffy commentators would have you believe, there is absolutely nothing wrong with not caring if your own very mediocre, flea-bitten ox dies of some terrible bovine plague, just so long as you know for certain that he’s infected the stronger, heavier, prettier, prize-winning pedigree ox belonging to that ambitious neighbour you don’t like before he dies. Yes, as world views go it’s petty and it’s vindictive and it’s small time, but the important thing to remember is that it’s also perfectly reasonable. In an ideal world, Tottenham fans would follow a club that is so successful that anything Arsenal do wouldn’t cost them a thought, but they don’t and this is where they find themselves, whooping euphorically in celebration of their own club’s small role in any setbacks suffered by their most bitter rivals. And that’s OK.

Needless to say, there has been a certain amount of pearl-clutching and sanctimonious clucking from certain quarters about assorted Tottenham fans making the best of their evening by “doing the Poznan” to celebrate City’s second goal, much of it seems to have come from commentators, pundits or journalists who almost certainly haven’t had to pay for a match-day ticket, pie or pint for 25 or 30 years and have perhaps lost touch with the petty, harmless tribalism that often makes being a fan so enjoyable. It’s important to remember that this is just football and nothing particularly dreadful will actually happen to anybody if Arsenal don’t win the title. Though it is to be hoped that the podium for Manchester City’s fourth consecutive Premier League trophy lift does not collapse under the weight of the 115 big elephants trumpeting loudly throughout the ceremony because they’re so upset at being ignored.

While plenty of Spurs fans were happy enough to see their side get beaten, their manager made little or no effort to contain his irritation after the match. In a presser that was spikier than an Australian Gympie-Gympie tree , Big Ange railed against what he perceived to be the treachery of Tottenham’s turncoats in a tirade about unfair dinkum that was more than a little ambiguous and hinted that people inside, as well as outside, the club might have wanted his players to fail. “I think the last 48 hours have revealed the foundations are fairly fragile – outside the club, inside the club ... everywhere,” he said. “I already knew what I wanted to do, I just have to make some adjustments to how I do it.” Asked to clarify his remarks, he refused to do so and invited journalists to draw their own conclusions, mate. For as long as he fails to elaborate, the only cast-iron one to arrive at is that recent history has taught us that Tottenham managers who criticise the club or its fanbase while repeatedly losing football matches don’t tend to last long.

LIVE ON BIG WEBSITE

All eyes on Tottenham again this evening, with Sarah Rendell on hand at 7.15pm with her live blog on Spurs 0-1 Chelsea in the WSL, while Michael Butler will hopefully have updates on any leaks in the Old Trafford roof during his coverage of Manchester United 1-2 Newcastle at 8pm.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It was our dream when we started the season to be here. To play [in the Big Cup] is, after the Premier League, the best” – Unai Emery gives the Best League In The World™ an unnecessary boost as he revels in ending Aston Villa’s 40-year wait to return to Europe’s top table.

FOOTBALL DAILY LETTERS

Parenting can be tough, with kids exposed to social media and drugs and terrible music … but that said, the toughest conversation I’ve ever had with my son happened today, when I had to explain that sometimes good people have to do bad things and support Tottenham. He hasn’t been so disappointed since the day I told him the player he kept calling Santa Cannoli was actually named Santi Cazorla” – Christopher Jersan.

How Santa Cannoli might have looked.

Sadly I can’t take credit for this, that goes to wonderfully monikered Marc O’Reachtaire on Twixer , but for those of you not on social media disgrace ‘Man City winning the league four times in a row is a serious achievement to be fair, it’s up there with Lance Armstrong winning seven tours on the bounce’” – Noble Francis.
Along with a few million others, I’m beginning to find this single team dominance of the Premier League decidedly tiresome. Surely it’s time to start talking about a handicap system to make things more competitively interesting? I’ll start the ball rolling by suggesting a 12-point deduction next season for the winners, a six-point deduction for the runners-up, and a three-point deduction for the third-placed team. If anyone can still win it with a handicap, their deduction should increase by a further three points the following season. Eventually, perhaps, someone else will get a look-in” – Rick Gaehl.
Manchester City’s inevitable penultimate gear-click toward the title at Tottenham was a sober reminder of what happens when you give generative Alf-Inge (AI) free rein to reproduce in ever-stronger form” – Peter Oh.
The continuing water leaks and flooding at Old Trafford all stem of course from Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013 – a succession of eight mostly out of their depth managers since then have all confirmed the inevitable outcome of ‘Après Moyes, le déluge’” – Adrian Irving.
I think I should win the David Squires cartoon because … I think I should win the David Squires cartoon because … This is not a recording” – Dr Peter Storch.

Send letters to [email protected] . Today’s letter o’ the day winner is … Christopher Jersan, who now has the chance to win a David Squires cartoon from our print shop at the end of the week. Terms and conditions for all this can be viewed here .
