There’s a lot to love about travel nursing, including the potential for lucrative pay and perks. One of the biggest incentives for travel nurses is the prospect of a signing bonus. While these bonuses can be a valuable addition to your income, understanding the ins and outs of signing bonuses is important to ensure you make informed decisions about the types of contracts you accept and your income expectations.

Here’s what every travel nurse needs to know about sign-on bonuses, from what they are to how you can earn them, along with other key considerations.

Types of sign-on bonuses

While you may hear terms like “standard sign-on bonus,” travel nursing bonuses can come in many different forms. The most common types of signing bonuses are:

  • Lump-sum bonus: Rare but highly sought after, these bonuses offer a one-time payment for accepting a contract. Nurses with specialized skills or extensive experience are often the recipients of higher lump-sum bonuses.
  • Tiered bonus: This type of bonus involves payments made in increments, usually based on meeting certain milestones or service duration. For instance, you might get part of the bonus after accepting the contract, with the rest paid incrementally every few weeks.
  • Completion bonus: While not technically a “signing” bonus, this incentive is frequently awarded upon the completion of a contract or after a specified period of service. Simply accepting the contract isn’t enough; you’ll need to see it through to the end.

No matter what type of sign-on incentive a contract offers, there are bound to be terms and conditions attached to it. Before you jump at a contract because of a lucrative signing bonus, be sure you know what you’re signing up for. Common stipulations include:

  • Duration: Most bonuses require you to stick around for a certain time. Leaving early might mean saying goodbye to any extra cash.
  • Taxes: Depending on how the bonus is paid, it’s likely considered taxable income. For instance, lump-sum bonuses are generally flat-taxed at 25%.
  • Eligibility: There’s usually a checklist of criteria to receive the full bonus, reflecting how well you do or specific milestones you must meet, such as weekly average hours.

Tips for navigating signing bonuses

Always read the fine print on any contract you sign. If you’re new to travel nursing or aren’t familiar with signing bonuses, a few insider tips can help.

  • Choose the right agency. Your agency is your advocate when it comes to contracts. Don’t be afraid to ask your recruiter about signing bonuses and their requirements.
  • Check your qualifications. Ensure your licenses and certifications are up to date. The last thing you want is to accept a contract with a bonus you’re not eligible for.
  • Negotiate like a pro. Don’t just nod and sign the contract. Ask questions, understand the details, and don’t be shy to negotiate. Remember, you’re in demand.
  • Know what you’re signing up for. Read the stipulations attached to the signing bonus like a detective. Understand what you’re saying yes to, from the daily duties to the duration.

Signing bonuses can be a valuable way to enhance your income as a travel nurse, but it’s critical to discern the type, term, and potential implications of each bonus offered. How To Find The Right Travel Nursing Company

When looking for the best travel nursing company to suit your needs, you first have to know what your needs are.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when considering travel nursing companies:

  • Are you going to need health insurance?
  • How important is it that you contribute to your retirement?
  • Do you prefer to find your own housing or do you want your company to find it for you?
  • Where do you want to travel?
  • How do you plan on getting there?
  • Do you plan on working per diem as well?
  • What kind of healthcare facilities are you hoping to work in?

What to Look for in Travel Nursing Agencies

When looking into travel nurse agencies you should first make sure that they provide the basics: free housing or a housing stipend, health and dental insurance, a retirement plan, travel reimbursement, 24-hour customer support, and a variety and abundance of travel nursing jobs all over the country.

Here are a few tips from my experience about the basics:

Travel Nurse Housing:

Do you want your agency to find housing for you, or do you want to take the housing stipend and search for housing yourself?

I personally found it much easier to have my agency set up my housing for me. This way I knew it was safe, furnished, close to where I was working, and paid for. If there were any problems, all I had to do was call my company and it would be handled.

Many people choose to find their own housing and take the housing stipend instead. There are pros and cons to this choice:

Pros To Choosing Housing Stipends

  • Your housing stipend depends on the city you live in, but oftentimes, it is more than the rent you end up paying. This is a good way to make some extra tax-free cash.
  • You can find exactly the type of housing you’re looking for at the price you’re willing to pay. You can rent just a room for yourself and pocket a lot of cash. Or rent an entire house if you’re bringing your family or pets along. If you’re traveling with fellow coworkers, you can find a bigger house to share that fits everyone.
  • You can choose where you live. Maybe you’re going to Seattle and you’d rather live downtown and commute to work than vs. living next to the hospital in the suburbs.
  • There are several websites and groups now to help you find housing
  • Once you’ve done it once, you understand how to find housing and can repeat the process in the next location.

Cons To Choosing Housing Stipends

  • It can be difficult to find short-term furnished housing.
  • Many landlords require a deposit, so you have to front that money before you get your first paycheck.
  • If you end up extending your contract, it’s not guaranteed that your landlord hasn’t rented out the place to someone else.
  • If you have never been to that city before, it can also be tough to determine whether a neighborhood is safe or not.

Another thing to keep in mind, if you are traveling with a pet, it may make it difficult to find your own housing. Oftentimes, travel nurse agencies have housing already contracted that accepts pets.

There are pros and cons to using your a travel nurse agency’s contracted housing vs. finding your own housing. It just depends on how much time and effort you can put into the search and if you’re hoping to pocket any extra housing stipend cash.

Benefits for Travel Nurses:

  • The majority of travel nurse companies offer health and dental insurance.
  • Now that the Affordable Care Act is in place, it might be wise to research whether or not it would be more cost-effective for you to go with your agency’s healthcare plan or purchase one of your own through healthcare.org. The benefit of going through healthcare.org is that if you do plan on switching travel nurse agencies, you won’t have to change your insurance.
  • Some smaller travel nurse companies will give you a healthcare stipend if you don’t take their health insurance so you can purchase your own.
  • As far as retirement plans go, I decided to open up my own Roth IRA and not contribute to the 401K because I didn’t know how long I was going to be traveling.  With some companies you can contribute to your 401K from day 1 and with others you have to wait as long as 1 year.

Travel Nurse Reimbursements

When talking with your potential travel nurse agency, make sure you ask them what the reimbursement is for travel. “Travel” cost is considered the amount of money it takes you to get from your “tax home” to your travel assignment or from one assignment to the next. Often times this can be negotiated if there is a high need in one state that happens to be across the country.

I have found that the average reimbursement is $500.

They will pay you half on your first paycheck and the other half when you complete your assignment. You have the option of either driving or flying to your next destination. I personally drove to each of my assignments; I couldn’t imagine trying to fit all my belongings into suitcases and I love road trips.

Important Pay and Benefits Questions to Ask

Not all benefits or pay packages are created equal. It is important to find an agency that offers benefits, housing, and pay packages that are specific to your needs.

1. What destinations does your agency serve?

The whole point of travel nursing is to travel…right? So it is important to find a company that serves the city or cities you want to travel to. Some agencies claim they have contracts nationwide, however, that may not be the case.

If you know of a specific hospital that you would like to travel to because it looks good on your resume or a specific city you want to explore, then make sure your potential agency has a contract at that location. This is especially important if you want to travel to places such as Hawaii and Alaska.

2. How are your pay packages broken down?

Does the company tend to pay a higher base rate with lower non-taxable reimbursements or a lower base rate with higher non-taxable reimbursements?

Having a higher base rate may serve you better if you plan on taking company housing, plan on buying a house, or getting a loan in the near future. If you are someone who likes to find their own housing, then a higher housing stipend may be the way to go with a lower base rate.

3. What types of housing do you provide?

Most agencies offer a one-bedroom furnished apartment for your typical 13-week contract. This typically does not include dishes, linen, a washer and dryer, a T.V., or even a vacuum. If you don’t like lugging your belongings around with you all over the country or paying out of pocket to rent this stuff, then it may be wise to either ask if the agency provides any of these necessities at no cost or find your own housing.

If your contract is only eight weeks, then you could get stuck in an extended-stay hotel. I personally like to have nice housing, so I wanted a company that focused on providing comfortable and safe housing options. If you like to find your own housing then this may not apply to you.

4. What type of benefits do you offer?

Most agencies offer medical/dental benefits and a retirement package. If these benefits are important to you, then finding a company with good benefits is essential.

If you like to live on the edge with no health benefits and you brush and floss your teeth like a champ, then maybe you don’t care about benefits. If this is the case then you can ask the company if they are willing to pay you a higher base rate for not taking their benefits.

As far as retirement packages go, I found it easier to do my own Roth IRA on the side. This way, if I switched companies I didn’t have to worry about moving my money all over the place.

5. What types of extra work-related costs do you reimburse for?

Travel nurse companies can reimburse you for the following:

  • Licensing fees
  • CEU (Continuing Education) requirements
  • Certifications
  • Required immunizations

Some travel nurse agencies have a CEU database that is free for their employees. This helps cut costs in those states that require a certain number to maintain or acquire a new license.

These extra costs add up over time so it’s nice to know your agency is looking out for your pocketbook.

6. What are your missed and canceled shift policies?

A missed shift means you called in sick, and a canceled shift means they canceled you for low census. For the most part, the hospital determines how the travel nurse agency handles this, and it will be written in your contract.

This is important because in the travel nurse world if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. And in some cases, you may have to reimburse your agency for housing costs.

There may be a clause written in your contract that allows you to “miss” a certain amount of shifts without being penalized. There will also be a clause that states how many shifts the hospital can cancel you. Usually, it’s once a pay period, and your agency shouldn’t require you to reimburse them for housing costs.

There are even some agencies that offer 100% guaranteed shifts meaning no matter what you will not get canceled.

Travel Nursing Compensation: Everything You Need to Know

You’ve probably heard it time and time again: you can make serious money from travel nursing. You’ve also probably gotten a headache trying to make sense of your travel nursing compensation package. But that good salary makes it worth your while to figure out the ins and outs of your compensation package.

A compensation package includes:

  • Housing stipend or agency-provided lodging
  • Travel stipend
  • Meals and incidentals stipend
  • Medical insurance stipend or agency-provided coverage

Ready? Here’s everything you need to know about travel nursing compensation.

First, before you pull out your calculators and dig into the numbers, take a moment to reframe the way you look at compensation.

Your values determine your value

There’s no one-size-fits all travel nursing salary package. What you want in a compensation package depends on what you want for your life.

  • If you are traveling to a city where your great aunt has a summer home you can live in, you’ll go for the housing stipend instead of free housing.
  • If you are on your spouse’s health insurance, you’ll pick higher pay over medical benefits.
  • If you want to work hard to earn as much money as quickly as possible, you’ll prioritize generous overtime pay.

Think deeply about what you need and what you don’t before signing on the dotted line.

Stick to big picture accounting

Throughout all industries, when new employees are offered pay packages, they get stuck on a single number — that annual salary figure. Those five or six digits can represent so much: what your work is worth, the kind of life you can lead, and the possibility of attaining your future goals.

But, that number alone can be tricky.

A high salary figure is so attractive that you may overlook a poor benefits package, no overtime pay, or no vacation days.

And a low salary figure is so deflating that you may miss the true monetary and lifestyle advantages of bonuses, tax-free money, and generous overtime.

In short, a salary figure is never the complete story. When evaluating your travel nursing pay rate, you want to focus on big picture accounting :

Think of the big picture as a puzzle, made up of a lot of little pieces. Let’s take a close look at each of those little puzzle pieces to figure out how they fit into the whole.

The pay rate (also called base rate) is the piece of the puzzle people talk about the most. You see pay rates posted in job ads, in emails from your staffing agency, and in articles about travel nursing salaries.

Simply put, the pay rate is the hourly rate that a staffing agency charges for a travel nurse’s time. These rates may vary widely from hospital to hospital. A single agency may even have different pay rates within the same hospital.

Some folks may even try to convince you that the pay rate is the entire picture — but you know better.

Think of pay rates much in the same way that you think of the price of an airline ticket. Many factors influence fluctuation in price of a seat, from environmental influences to the natural ebb and flow in demand. Airline prices are notoriously difficult to predict with any degree of specificity. And two nearly identical seats may come with very different price tags.

The same is true of travel nursing pay rates. Everything from patient demand to a single staff member’s extended maternity leave can influence a given unit’s pay rate for travel nurses. It’s hard to generalize pay rates by location — one hospital may have a pay rate of $44/hour, while a different hospital in the same city may pay only $37/hour. Even for nearly identical positions, you may be offered very different pay rates.

And, in the same way there are a lot of different kinds of airline rates — from first class to business class to coach plus to basic coach, from bereavement fares to military rates to package deals that include airfare — there are many different kinds of pay rates. Here are a few.

  • Standard rates are the most common type of pay rate. A hospital and an agency will determine a set rate for each specialty that the agency staffs.
  • Specialized rates are generally set alongside standard rates and run about $2-$8/hour higher than standard rates. They reward specialties that a hospital considers highly advanced.
  • Negotiated rates are less common than the above types of pay rates. When a hospital is interested in a nurse with a particularly necessary set of skills or a high level of experience, they may negotiate higher rates to gain the nurse’s services.
  • Overtime rates are the hourly rates hospitals pay their agency nurses for hours worked over the contract hours.

Bonuses can sweeten your travel nursing salary package. These can come from the hospital, the agency, or both. Here are the primary types of bonuses that you may receive:

  • Sign-on bonuses are typically offered by the hospital. Since these are the highest-risk bonus given by the hospital (since there’s no guarantee of contract completion), big sign-on bonuses may be offered when hospitals are having a particularly difficult time filling positions.
  • Completion bonuses are hospital-provided bonuses that you receive once you’ve completed all the contract hours. These may be used to give you extra incentive to finish out a contract. Both sign-on and completion bonuses are generally paid first to your agency and then to you, so keep this in mind when evaluating your cash flow.
  • Referral bonuses are agency-provided bonuses that encourage you to bring your nurse friends along with you on the travel nursing ride.
  • Contract extension bonuses are the prize you get for staying on at a certain hospital. Often provided by the agency, contract extension bonuses often make more economic sense for agencies than sourcing and hiring new nurses. It’s a win-win.

Things to keep in mind about bonuses:

  • Don’t confuse bonuses and stipends. Bonuses are not tax-free money and are often taxed at a higher rate than your hourly wage.
  • Find out when you’ll get your bonus. Bonuses may come at any point during your contract — don’t confused expectations impact your cash flow.
  • Read the fine print. Bonuses may come with requirements and stipulations. For example, a hospital may require you to make up any missed hours before you can receive a completion bonus.
  • Ask and you shall receive. Bonuses are an expected part of your package. Though they are called bonuses , they are not extra. You are counting on them as income. Ask your agency to clarify anything that confuses you so you understand everything about them.

Tax-free income

The next piece of the puzzle is tax-free income. This is the treasure chest of additional income that can make travel nursing such a lucrative career. Temporary housing stipends and meals and incidental stipends are the primary forms this treasure takes. But, the treasure map to get you to these goodies is complex, requiring a little knowledge of the ways of tax codes and regulations.

Make sure you’re eligible for tax-free treasures

A little background: this tax-free income is offered to all workers who travel as part of their jobs. It’s why everyone, from office assistants to CEOs, are reimbursed for job-related travel expenses. These employees generally fall under the tax category of permanent employees who travel as part of their job. Some nurses fall under this category, too. Say a nurse has a permanent position that regularly schedules her for 5 days on, 6 days off. If, during her days off, she works as a travel nurse to earn extra income, she will be eligible for the tax-free stipends and reimbursements that her agency offers.

The vast majority of travel nurses, though, do not have another permanent gig. If you travel for a living, you must meet two criteria with the IRS to receive tax-free money: you must be deemed a temporary worker, and you must have a permanent tax home.

Maintain temporary worker status

To be designated a temporary worker, you must not work in any one location for more than a year. This extends not just to an individual hospital, but also to a single metro area. If you work two different travel nursing contracts in the same city for more than 12 months within a 24-month period, you will likely be deemed a permanent employee of the area and will be taxed for any stipends or reimbursements that you received.

Maintain a tax home

No matter where you are in your travel nursing career, you’ve probably heard quite a bit about the importance of a tax home. The IRS uses the phrase tax home to define the primary place where a taxpayer does business. Rather than referring to a place of residence, it refers to the general urban or municipal area where you earn most of your money.

For example, if a traditional, non-traveling nurse works full-time at a hospital in Minneapolis, her tax home is not her ranch-style home at 123 Fablecrest Avenue. Her tax home is Minneapolis.

To have a permanent tax home, you must meet at least two of the following criteria:

  • You earn significant income in the city, town, or metro area that is your tax home.
  • Your expenses are duplicated due to traveling for work.
  • You have not abandoned your tax home to travel for work.

Collect your tax-free funds and benefits

Now that you know you’re eligible, the different tax-free reimbursements are a big part of what makes a travel nurse pay package attractive. There are three primary areas in which tax-free stipends come into play: temporary housing stipends, travel stipends, and meals and incidentals stipends.

Temporary housing stipends

Of course, you’ll need an excellent place to live during your travel nursing gig. You can go with agency-provided housing or choose to receive a tax-free housing stipend to offset the cost of your housing.

What you choose will depend on your priorities and preferences. If you want to avoid the hassle of securing your own lease, paying a deposit, and dealing with a landlord, you’ll likely opt for agency-provided housing. You’ll get a fully furnished place to live for your gig, hassle-free.

If you want to choose the place you live and have more say over what neighborhood you spend your off-duty time in, you’ll likely go for the housing stipend.

Travel stipends

In the same way that a hospital exec would never have to pay their own airfare to go to a medical conference, you should never pay for your job-related airfare, rental car, or other modes of transportation. Your agency will provide you with a tax-free travel stipend to offset any costs you incur traveling from gig to gig.

Meals and incidental expenses stipends

You know that traveling for pleasure is expensive. From baggage fees to overpriced airline lunches, airports and airlines will get you every time. Sometimes, it seems that every move you make during air travel costs you another $10 or $20.

Though there are ways to save money while traveling, you will inevitably rack up some incidentals. Fortunately, your agency will offer you reimbursement for your travel expenses. To avoid the time-consuming and laborious process of collecting logs of detailed travel costs (and to prevent you from having to keep track of each cent you spend while on the road), most agencies will provide you with a meals and incidental expenses stipend, tax-free.

Medical benefits

Medical benefits make up another piece of the pay puzzle. Somewhat similar to temporary housing options, most travel nurses go one of two routes when it comes to medical insurance: agency-provided coverage or securing their own insurance with a reimbursement from the agency.

Once you have all of these pieces, you can take a good look at the big picture. Each assignment, you’ll be able to make the best decision for yourself and your career.

4 Things to Know about Travel Nursing Pay Bonuses

Again, like any other travel nursing pay variable, contract bonuses must be viewed as part of the compensation package pie . However, bonuses are quite unique. To simplify our discussion, we’ll break down bonuses in to 3 distinct categories (click here for referral bonuses).

Hospital Provided Travel Nursing Bonuses

The first category is the “hospital-provided bonus.” These bonuses are offered by the hospital and are in addition to the bill rate. They are sometimes offered as sign on bonuses, but more commonly as completion bonuses. Hospitals typically shy away from sign on bonuses for travel nurses due to the risk that the assignment won’t be completed. When the labor market was tight, hospital-provided bonuses were offered more often. These days, they’re rarely offered and when they are offered, it’s for assignments that the hospital is having a difficult time filling.

There are several things travel nurses must know about hospital-provided bonuses. First, the bonuses are really offered to the travel nursing company with the expectation that they’ll be passed along to the travel nurse. However, in many cases it’s not required that the bonuses be passed on to the travel nurse. Despite this, you should anticipate that the company will pass these bonuses on to you when they are offered by the hospital. Companies don’t want to risk negative publicity if you find out that a bonus was offered for the assignment but not offered to you.

Second, hospital provided bonuses often have strict stipulations for collecting. The stipulations often require that 100% of the contracted hours be worked. And yes, you may get dinged even if the hospital calls you off for a shift, or sends you home early. They may argue that it’s the travel nurse’s responsibility to make up the missed hours.

Third, your company may withhold payment of the bonus until it’s actually paid to them. Remember, companies have to bill hospitals to collect their money. Hospitals tend to pay on normal business terms like Net 30, 60, or 90. This means the hospital may not deliver the bonus payment for 30, 60, or 90 days after the assignment was complete.

Travel Nursing Agency-Added Bonuses

The second category of bonus is what we’ll call the “agency-added bonus.” We call this an “added bonus” because for all intents and purposes it represents additional money that the company doesn’t factor into its original compensation calculation. There’s a fine and confusing line here. As mentioned previously, agencies typically have compensation calculating programs that account for all costs related to the travel nurse. These calculators help travel nurse recruiters determine the compensation package for any given travel nursing job by accounting for how changes in the various compensation variables affect the company’s gross profit on the deal. An “added bonus” is one that is not factored into this calculation.

In this regard, the company is willing to take a hit to their bottom line. Obviously, they have a reason for doing this. For example, they may offer these bonuses for extending a contract or taking a new contract within a certain number of weeks of the previous contract’s end. They’re doing this because it’s cheaper and easier to retain their current travel nurses than it is to hire new ones. Like hospital provided bonuses, these agency-added bonuses will typically have strict requirements for collecting.

Travel Nursing Agency-Factored Bonuses

The third category of bonus is the “agency-factored bonus.” In this case, the company factors the cost of the bonus in to the compensation calculator, which can potentially reduce the value of some other variable in the pay package pie. Companies may do this to mitigate risk. If they are on the line for a large volume of costs (housing, travel etc), they may use the factored bonus to reduce the compensation paid during the contract, making up for it when the contract is completed. Companies may also use this as a sales strategy, or what I like to call a sales gimmick. They’ll toss out a bonus as bait in hopes that an unsuspecting traveler will view the bonus as a variable that makes one pay package better than another and bite on the sales gimmick.

As you can see, we’re back to square 1. Just because a bonus is offered, don’t assume that it’s an extra. You must incorporate the bonus into the entire pay package to determine if the deal being offered is a good one.

Taxes on Bonuses

Finally, it’s always important to consider how taxes will be calculated on a given bonus. With travel nursing bonuses, there are two primary issues to consider. The first consideration is the “employer match” on payroll taxes. All compensation is subject to payroll taxes. The employer and employee pay matching amounts for FICA taxes. The employee sees their portion of the taxes on their pay stubs, but they don’t see the employer’s portion.

Under typical circumstances, when an employer offers a bonus, they offer it free and clear of the employer match. For example, if an employer offers a $2000 bonus, then they’ll pay the employee all $2000 and pay the employer match separately. This way, the employee is only taxed for their own portion of the taxes. This is usually how it works with agency added bonuses and agency factored bonuses because agencies are able to factor all the costs into their compensation calculators.

However, hospital provided bonuses are often subject to the employer match before they are paid out to you. For example, when a hospital offers a $5000 completion bonus, the agency is the one that is paying it as compensation so they’re the ones subject to the “employer match” taxes. And remember, the only source of revenue for an agency is what they’re able to bill the hospital. So the cost of the employer match is typically deducted from the bonus itself, which reduces the amount for the traveler.

The second consideration is the method that your agency uses to tax the bonus. There are two methods, the aggregate method and the percentage method. With the percentage method, the employer taxes the bonus separately from your income. This way, you get taxed a flat 25%.

With the aggregate method, your agency will add the bonus to your income and treats it all as one lump sum. Of course, this will increase your annual income estimate in the payroll tax calculator making it look like you’re making way more money than you actually are. This will result in a higher tax rate for that particular paycheck.

For example, let’s say your agency pays you weekly and your typical taxable income is $900. You’ll be getting taxed at the applicable rate for that income bracket. Then, they add the $5000 bonus to the weekly paycheck. Now, it looks like you make $5900 per week. So you’ll get taxed at the applicable rate for that income bracket which is significantly higher.

You can always attempt to iron these issues out prior to receiving the bonus. Just ask for the percentage method.

And that’s what I think you’d be interested in finding out…What travel nursing agencies have more jobs for LPNs. There are some Facebook groups devoted to this. They may be worth looking into. Thanks for the information on completion bonuses…..did not ever know how this was figured in. Just know that some travel corporations have gotten away from providing these bonuses.

How do taxes work for these completion bonuses? I was offered a $10,000 completion bonus at my current assignment, but my agency put $8000 in my contract because they said they had to pay taxes on it as well. Have you heard of this? I know I will get taxed 40% for what comes my way, but why would they get taxed on my income?

This is a great question. I’m not a payroll or tax expert. However, I believe that the agency will be responsible for paying the employer’s portion of payroll taxes on the bonus. To clarify, employers are required to pay taxes on the money they pay to their employees. So the employees pay taxes and the employers pay taxes. The employer’s portion of the taxes do not show on the employee’s pay stub. I don’t think my old agency used to handle it the way your agency is, but that doesn’t mean your agency is wrong for doing so. I’ll check around to see if I can dig up some additional information and add another reply if I’m successful.

On another note, you shouldn’t have to pay such a high rate on the bonus yourself. You should request your agency to pay the bonus per the “Percentage Method” as opposed to the “Aggregate Method”. The aggregate method makes the payroll software system think that you are going to make that much money on every paycheck so it taxes you as if you were going to make a lot more money for the year than you actually are. The percentage method should just tax at 25%, I believe.
