Best time to visit georgia.
Spring and autumn are the best times to head to Georgia. Summers (especially July and August) can be very hot and humid with temperatures reaching up to 104ºF. This is a great time to escape to the Black Sea or the mountains to cool off.
Winters can be very cold, although the country rarely freezes over. However, power supplies are frequently interrupted, so don’t rely on heating. This is a beautiful, fertile region so bring an umbrella and expect rain at any time of year! Learn more about the best time to visit Georgia.
Geography and environment
Georgia’s spiky topography makes for stunning scenery. The Greater Caucasus Mountains crisscross the country, divvying it up into pockets of forests, valleys, and glaciers. Its only coastline runs 330 km along the stunning Black Sea. Georgia’s neighbors include the Russian Federation, Turkey , Armenia and Azerbaijan .
Culture and customs
Georgia is one of those countries with a truly unique geographical position, sitting on the border of two continents, Europe and Asia. Over time, the land known as Georgia has been invaded, conquered, fought over, and divided by several of history’s greatest empires, including the Ottoman, Russian, and Soviet Empires. But despite all this, the cultural identity of Georgia has held strong, with traditional language, dance, cuisine, and stories still passionately celebrated across the nation.
Today, Georgia’s culture is more linked to Europe than Asia. The popularity of Christianity is thought to have been the largest factor for the more Western influence and this is especially noticeable when observing the architecture.
Today, Georgians still make up the majority of the population and hold true to their traditional language. Much research has been conducted about the Georgian alphabet. It is now thought that this unique alphabet and writing system was created as early as the 3 rd century BC before going through multiple variations leading to the modern writing system in use today.
There are several great ways to understand and appreciate Georgian history. One is to attend a Georgian supra, an ancient ritual that brings people together over a large meal to celebrate or commemorate important moments in life. Another great option is to watch a traditional folk dance. Performed in national dress, these dances communicate unique stories through fast-paced movements and various instrumental accompaniments.
Eating and drinking
What do you get when a country sits on the border of two mega continents and was once an important part of the Silk Road trade route? Only a cuisine abundant in tantalizing tastes, unique ingredients, and cooking techniques originating from all parts of the world.
And that’s not even mentioning the fact that Georgia has been producing wine since 6000 BC or that it's thought to be one of the first to use wheat and honey. Don’t just take our word for how tasty the food is. Instead, eat your way through the regional dishes and Georgian specialties on our 8 day Georgia Real Food Adventure tour.
Things to try in Georgia:
Not only is this dish a delicious dumpling filled with minced meat, spices, and vegetables, but it’s also an old Georgian offering to the sun, with the 28 folds symbolizing the solar cycles. Found throughout the many regions of Georgia, you’ll likely hear the slurping of this tasty dumpling wherever you go.
Cheese and bread take on a whole new life in Georgia with one of their favorite dishes, khachapuri, found in every part of the country. There are many versions of the dish to try, from the three cheese varieties to those made with potato or an egg cracked on top. You'll also see a wide array of shapes and cooking techniques, depending on where you are in the country.
Nigvziani badrijani
Nigvziani badrijani is an eggplant and walnut dish that makes for a great light snack or appetizer, especially for vegetarians and vegans. Eggplants are a prominent vegetable in Georgia and are grown in every region of the country. Nigvziani badrijani can be prepared in different ways with some frying, grilling or baking the eggplant and combining it with the flavored walnut spread.
Churchkhela
Churchkhela may look like candlewax, but in actuality, it’s a sweet treat of nuts and dried fruit threaded on a string and dipped in a mixture of grape juice, sugar, and flour. After a good build-up of the grape mixture, the dish is left to air-dry. This gives the treat a lengthy shelf life, which came in handy when it was used for sustenance by Georgian soldiers of old.
Georgian wine
Evidence suggests wine has long been produced in and around Georgia since as early as 6000 BC. With such a lengthy amount of time winemaking, the Georgians can definitley create an aromatic glass of vino. Georgia also has around 500 varieties of indigenously grown grapes. When in town, you may be able to see how wine was made in a qvevri during ancient times.

Summers in Georgia can get excruciatingly hot and humid, particularly in areas like Savannah and Atlanta, but you’ll find cooler summer temperatures in the mountains.
Beach destinations like Tybee Island also tend to get extra crowded from Memorial Day through Labor Day, so you may want to consider a visit in late spring or early fall for a quieter, more relaxed vacation.
Q: What should I know before going to Georgia?
There are a few things to know about Georgia before you visit.
If you’re planning on dining out a lot in Georgia, be prepared for big portions. Georgians are very generous when it comes to food and you may be presented with more than your stomach can handle.
Southern food is also fairly heavy, so don’t plan a multi-mile hike after a big lunch of shrimp and grits. Once you taste one of these delicious dishes, though, you’ll absolutely get the hype.
Speaking of food and drinks, sweet tea is the default iced tea option in Georgia. If you want unsweetened iced tea, be sure to let your server know.
There’s usually no need to rent a car if you’re visiting Atlanta. The city has a robust public transportation system featuring a subway, buses, and street cars. This is also the best way to avoid the notorious Atlanta traffic and get to all your desired destinations on time.
And if all else fails, rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are ubiquitous in this big city, so there are plenty of ways to get around.
You’ll also run into lots of classic southern accents throughout the state of Georgia. As it is anywhere else in the world, it’s extremely rude to make fun of the local accent.
Don’t imitate it and if you can’t understand what someone said, just ask them to repeat themselves. A little kindness and respect goes a long way wherever you are in the world.
Q: How much money do you need for a trip to Georgia?
Your budget for a trip to Georgia will depend on your itinerary, but the average traveler spends around $128 USD per day in Georgia on transportation, accommodations, food, activities, and other travel expenses.
You’ll tend to spend more in cities like Atlanta and Savannah and a bit less in rural destinations like the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Q: How many days do you need in Georgia?
For a full Georgia road trip, you’ll probably want to plan for at least one week away.
A seven-day trip will give you enough time to spend a few days exploring the city of Atlanta, nearby destinations like Callaway Gardens and Macon, Savannah, and the Golden Isles of St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island.
Q: What are the best things to do in Georgia?
You’ll find many of Georgia’s top attractions in Atlanta and the surrounding area. Atlanta is home to major museums like the High Museum of Art , the Fernback Museum of Natural History , the Center for Puppetry Arts , and the World of Coca-Cola .
The city is also a major hub of civil rights history .
At the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Park , you’ll find the iconic civil rights leader’s childhood home and gravesite as well as the Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King once served as pastor.
You can also visit the National Center for Civil and Human Rights , a museum dedicated to civil and human rights struggles around the world, in Downtown Atlanta.
For a more laid-back southern vibe, visit Savannah, a coastal city that blends the state’s historic charm with a vibrant art scene.
The city’s smaller size makes it perfect to explore on foot or via a classic trolley tour.
Savannah is home to plenty of historic sites including Bonaventure Cemetery (the setting for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil ), the Juliette Gordon Lowe Birthplace (home of the founder of the Girl Scouts), the First African Baptist Church (the oldest Black church in America), and the Telfair Academy (the oldest public art museum in America).
One of the best things to do in Savannah is to stroll through the many parks and squares in the Historic District featuring gorgeous fountains and Spanish Moss trees. While you’re there, stop into some of the galleries displaying works from local Savannah artists.
There are also plenty of ways to enjoy active outdoor adventures throughout the state of Georgia.
The iconic Appalachian Trail runs through the northwestern part of the state and you can enjoy the Blue Ridge Mountains at Chattahoochee National Forest . The forest features tons of trails perfect for all levels of hikers and has both campgrounds and cabins available for those who want to stay the night.
Water sports fans should make a point to visit Callaway Gardens , home to Robin Lake , a major destination for waterskiing and wakeboarding.
Not ready to get out on the lake?
Stroll through the gorgeous gardens featuring hundreds of gorgeous blooms.
And of course, you can’t miss Georgia’s beaches. Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island offer picturesque views that have attracted beachgoers from across the country for decades.
Q: Where is Georgia?
Georgia is located in the Southeastern region of the United States .
It shares borders with Tennessee and North Carolina (north), South Carolina (northeast), the Atlantic Ocean (southeast), Florida (south), and Alabama (west).
Q: Are credit cards accepted in Georgia?
Credit cards — mainly Visa and Mastercard — are widely accepted around Georgia. That being said, it is always wise to carry some cash for smaller establishments and in case of emergency.
Q: Can you drink the tap water in Georgia?
Yes, you can drink the tap water in Georgia.
Q: What is the local currency in Georgia?
The local currency in Georgia is the US Dollar (USD).

Georgia Adventure
The tour was overall very good. I think however that the Stalin museum should be added (e.g. on the way back from Batumi). We were lucky to stop there on our last day because there was no traffic going back to Tbilisi and all participants found this very interesting. I think leaving a bit earlier from Batumi (not at 9h) could enable future groups to not miss this opportunity.

All Georgia tour: from the Highlands to the Sea
Our driver/ guide, Paata, was very kind, accommodating, and professional throughout our journey across beautiful Georgia. Always full of humour and good vibes with him around. Safety is always observed on the road, where we spend a lot of time on during the trip. Highly recommended if you’re joining this tour. Niko from Exotour was responsive with his replies leading to our departure. Overall it was a smooth booking process. Madloba to you both! Itinerary covers a lot (too many) of monasteries and churches from the start. So I reckon this might not be everyone’s cup of tea. But hey, welcome to Georgia! Expect long hours on the road especially outside summer seasons when daylight is shorter because the itinerary is packed. At times you might feel rushed at certain places. It’s therefore good to plan ahead where you wanna spend more time and let your guide know. We truly enjoy our time in Mestia, Gudauri, and Kazbegi from the itinerary, where we are close to nature. Tbilisi and Batumi are very nice to walk around. Accommodations are mostly at 3-star hotels, imo. Better not to expect 4-star standards or else you might be disappointed. All included meals were adequate. We enjoy our stay in Mestia the most, and we are glad spending 2 nights there. Overall this tour covers a lot of ground within the given time and tries to give you a pretty wholistic experience of Georgia. Happy to recommend this to my friends. Gamarjoba!

Excellent trip. Our guide, Dmitri was very professional and well organized. Everything- meals, accommodations, trekking- was exceptional.
Introducing Georgia and Its People
I really enjoyed this tour. It took us to Mtskheta, Kazbegi (Stepanmintsda) and the Kakheeti region. It was an intense 4 days, full of learning, discovery and amazing natural sights (mountains, rivers, streams, reservoirs etc...) and of course countless churches and monasteries. Our guide, Mr Paata made it an exceptional tour. A kind, knowledgeable and friendly man, he made sure we enjoyed the tour, adjusted it to our needs and offered suggestions on what to do and where to stay for the rest of my trip. Paata made this tour much more pleasant & memorable. Madloba Paata! I really fell in love with this beautiful country, so small yet so packed with history, natural beauty and exceptionally warm people.
6-Day Trekking Group Tour from Tusheti to Khevsureti via Atsunta Pass
This was our second trek with Trek Georgia and as per our first trek it was fantastic. Good organisation, communication and transport. Nutsa our guide was amazing. The accommodation and food were great all along the trek and the pace and distances covered each day were very achievable. Tusheti is a special place and we really enjoyed our time hiking there. Highly recommend.

3-Day Tusheti Tour: Explore The Unspoiled Wilderness
The tour was way above my expectations. And really can recommend it. Koba wat an great guide and we felt very save with our driver Archill in Tusheti. We visites many places and had also time enough to relax. The Friendly Georgia is also helpfull and communicate very well. Thanks again.
Tour in Georgia - Georgian City Life
It was a great tour and experience. The itinerary was very full and interesting. It would have been nice to have had time to freshen up before the evening meals and for there to have been a greater variety of types of foods offered and more element of choice eg not Georgian every night, maybe Turkish too. The air conditioning in the car did not reach the back row which meant the person at the very back was too hot. But overall an excellent experience which I enjoyed very much.
Reviews of Small Group tours to Georgia
A great 11 day intro to the republic of georgia including beautiful mountain views, a modern city of Batumi, a historical walk through Tbilisi, and wonderful meals with Georgian hospitality. I couldn't ask for a better weather for the trip. The guide Zurab was full of energy, super fun, and so informative on Georgian culture. He helped me out regarding booking a taxi, getting a sim card and providing ideas during free time. It was a relaxed trip into such an untouristed country with a European flair with old churches and great food. I really wished we had more than a day to explore Ushguli...that's a super cool old timey* place to explore. Long travel days, but lots of unexpected surprises along the way. Highly recommend!!!

Georgia Travel: 9+ Fun Things To Do On Jekyll Island With Kids
J ekyll Island, a hidden gem along Georgia’s coast, is perfect for families seeking sun-soaked adventures and unforgettable memories. Dive into the magic of this captivating island with my list of 9+ fun things to do on Jekyll Island with kids, and ensure your family getaway is something you’ll treasure forever.
Also, if you still need to plan your trip, my post about Best Places To Stay On Jekyll Island will help you find the best accommodations for your family trip!
Where is Jekyll Island Located?
If you are unfamiliar with Jekyll Island, it is a pristine barrier island off the southeastern coast of Georgia . Nestled among Georgia’s Golden Isles, it is part of a chain of barrier islands renowned for their natural beauty and coastal charm.
Situated approximately midway between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida, Jekyll Island is easily reachable for those exploring the southeastern United States. The island’s unique blend of historic sites, picturesque beaches, and ecological wonders makes it a sought-after destination for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a peaceful retreat along the stunning Atlantic coastline.
Accessible by car via the Jekyll Island Causeway, this 7-mile-long island is a haven for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and beach lovers alike. Interestingly, the island is actually owned and managed by the state’s Jekyll Island Authority, and the conservation efforts are much appreciated by visitors. Due to building restrictions, the island is significantly less congested than its neighbors. For that reason, it is one of the last places where you can truly relax.
When Is The Best Time To Visit Jekyll Island?
Its location along the Atlantic Ocean lends itself to a mild climate, making Jekyll Island an inviting destination throughout the year. Summertime is the best time to visit if you are looking for beach weather. Everything is open during the summertime, but that is when the area is most crowded. However, it is nowhere near as crowded as other popular beach destinations . There are plenty of things to do on Jekyll Island with kids in the summer.
In summer, the days revolve around the beach and pool. But, in the winter, the Historic District, in particular, becomes a magical holiday haven. There are actually quite a few things to do on Jekyll Island with kids during the winter.
Visiting Jekyll Island with kids for the holidays has been a tradition for generations. In fact, iconic American families such as the Carnegies, Rockefellers, and Vanderbilts used to winter here! If you visit over the holidays, your family can enjoy the Holly Jolly Jekyll celebration held between November 24 and January 7 this year. There are holiday light tours, fireworks, a light parade, and more!
Things To Do On Jekyll Island With Kids
If you are looking for a place to spend true quality time with your family, Jekyll Island is one of my top family travel recommendations. As I mentioned above, it is very different from most other travel destinations in the southeast. There is a slower pace here, much like what people desire when visiting 30A in the Florida panhandle . On Jekyll Island, the to-do list is short, making it perfect for a long weekend trip.
Here are some of my favorite things to do on Jekyll Island with kids!
1. Experience The Magic of Driftwood Beach
You can not visit Jekyll Island without a visit to the fascinating Driftwood Beach . Known for its hauntingly beautiful landscapes, this unique beach is adorned with weathered trees and driftwood sculptures. This, by far, tops my list of things to do on Jekyll Island with kids!
Let your kids’ imaginations run wild as they explore this magical piece of shoreline, offering the perfect backdrop for family photos and beachcombing treasures. If you want to catch the iconic sunrises, arrive early and check the tides. I have a dedicated blog post with many pictures from our visit to Driftwood Beach and some tips for your adventure!
Read: Visiting Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island .
Also, while we didn’t get a chance to do it, horseback riding on Driftwood Beach looks magical! I 100% will be doing this on our next family trip to Jekyll Island.
2. Georgia Sea Turtle Center
Both the children and the adults are sure to enjoy a visit to the famous Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island. This educational yet heartwarming experience was such a fun outing for our family while visiting Jekyll Island, Georgia.
Your kids will be captivated by the fascinating world of sea turtles through interactive exhibits and rehabilitation efforts. Witness the incredible work of dedicated professionals committed to the conservation and protection of these majestic creatures, making it an inspiring stop for the whole family.
For more information, including pictures and tips, please read my blog post about Visiting The Sea Turtles on Jekyll Island . This is truly one of the most iconic things to do on Jekyll Island with kids!
3. Jekyll Island Boat Tours & Jekyll Island Dolphin Tours
Did you know that the waters around Jekyll Island are home to one of the world’s largest populations of beautiful bottlenose dolphins?
Book one of the Captain Phillip dolphin tours and watch majestic dolphins feeding, playing, or simply cruising about in their natural habitat. The 90-minute sightseeing tours along the Intracoastal waterway are fully narrated by expert local guides.
These tours offer a thrilling opportunity for kids to spot playful dolphins in their natural habitat. As they witness these marine wonders up close, the excitement and awe on your children’s faces will be a highlight of your island getaway. This is one of the most popular things to do on Jekyll Island with kids for a reason.
Whether you opt for a sunset cruise or a nature-focused expedition, your family will be treated to breathtaking views and the chance to encounter local wildlife. It’s a fantastic way to bond with your kids while immersing yourselves in the island’s natural beauty.
Tours depart from the Historic Jekyll Wharf at the Jekyll Island Club and run daily from March through October. November through February tours are limited, so check the calendar for availability. I recommend booking tickets in advance through Jekyll Island Boat Tours .
4. Explore The Jekyll Island Historic District and The Jekyll Island Club
I loved this area on Jekyll Island, and as I mentioned in my Jekyll Island Hotels blog post, I want to stay at the Jekyll Island Club on my next visit. The rich history of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel is simply iconic!
Transport your family to another era by exploring the Jekyll Island Historic District (240 acres) and the Jekyll Island Club on your trip to the island. Wander through historic cottages, museums, and vibrant gardens that tell the story of Jekyll Island’s rich past. You can engage your kids with tales of the island’s glamorous history, making history come alive for the whole family.
The 60-minute Jekyll Island guided trolley tour is an excellent option if you have little ones and want to minimize walking. The tram tour starts at the Mosaic Jekyll Island Museum. It includes entry into a historic cottage and admission into the Mosaic Gallery and Faith Chapel.
Additionally, a Jekyll Island horse and carriage tour departs from the Jekyll Island Club area as well! This is a pretty magical experience and one of the most unique things to do on Jekyll Island with kids.
And make sure to eat lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants at the Jekyll Island Club . I loved eating out at The Wharf along the water so much that we did it twice. Abby and Jake want me to tell you that there is a candy store, too!
5. Beaches: Sun, Sand, and Surf
One of the best ways to truly enjoy quality time with your family is just to relax and be together. A day at the beach is a perfect way to accomplish this. Plus, it’s one of the best free things to do on Jekyll Island with kids!
Jekyll Island boasts 10 miles of unspoiled coastline. Its pristine beaches invite families to unwind and play beneath the Georgia sun. Build sandcastles, look for seashells, or splash in the gentle waves. The island’s family-friendly beaches provide a perfect setting for relaxation and endless seaside fun. Enjoying a day at the beach is one of our favorite outdoor activities!
For a complete list of Jekyll Island beaches, click here .
Also, located near St. Andrews Beach, you will find the Wanderer Memorial . I recommend you take the time to walk the Wanderer Memory Trail on the way to the beach. While a somber look at Georgia’s history, it was educational and eye-opening for our entire family. It tells the story of one of America’s last known slave ships, the Wanderer, that came ashore illegally in 1858 with more than 400 enslaved Africans.
6. Make A Splash At Summer Waves Water Park
Cool off from the Georgia heat at the Summer Waves Water Park . Packed with thrilling water slides, lazy rivers, and splash zones, this water park guarantees a day of family-friendly excitement. Watch your kids enjoy the aquatic adventures and create cherished memories under the sun.
This park is seasonal and is only open during the summer months. So, plan accordingly.
7. Jekyll Island Miniature Golf
Located at the island’s center, across from Great Dunes Park, Jekyll Island Mini Golf is home to two 18-hole putt-putt golf courses, one for beginners and one for more advanced. While it lacks some of the bells and whistles of new and modern courses in the big, popular beach towns, the nostalgia here is 10/10.
8. Biking Around Jekyll Island On The Jekyll Island Trail System
If your kids are old enough to bike, exploring Jekyll Island on two wheels unveils a world of natural beauty and historical richness unrivaled.
Jekyll Island Trail System , the island’s network of biking trails, offers an immersive and eco-friendly way to experience its diverse landscapes. As you pedal along the paved paths, surrounded by maritime forests, salt marshes, and scenic ocean vistas, you’ll discover the true essence of Jekyll Island’s coastal charm. In fact, Trip Advisor rates the trail system as the #1 thing to do on Jekyll Island with a 5-star average review!
The well-maintained trails are suitable for riders of all ages and skill levels, providing a family-friendly adventure that allows you to set your own pace and savor the island’s unique atmosphere. Moreover, cyclists can easily navigate between the island’s most iconic attractions, including Driftwood Beach, the Historic District, and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center , all while enjoying the gentle ocean breezes.
9. Shop, Dine, and Relax on Jekyll Island
As you can see, there isn’t an overabundance of expensive touristy attractions on Jekyll Island. The pace is slower, and the island offers an opportunity to savor precious time with your loved ones.
The only other thing I want to point out is the great dining options (many with live music) and some opportunities to shop. On our recent trip, we ate at Torguga Jacks, The Whart at the Jekyll Island Club , Zachry’s near the Jekyll Harbor Marina, Wee Pub Beach, Harry’s Lounge at The Westin , and others. Everything was unique, and the small-town hospitality was appreciated!
The Jekyll Island Beach Village area is a great place to spend a few hours. I recommend going here toward the start of your trip if you aren’t staying at one of the hotels within walking distance, such as the Westin Jekyll Island. There is a great little grocer, the Jekyll Market, and several shops offering wine/beer. It’s a great chance to pick up essentials for your trip. Furthermore, the Village Green space at the center of this shopping district is a fun place for kids to run around, and there is beach access right there as well!
Other Things To Do On Jekyll Island
Since this post is curated for families, I left out a few activities geared more toward adults. Some are activities that we have yet to try ourselves, so I don’t feel 100% comfortable including them in my Jekyll Island must-dos, such as Gatorology at Horton’s Pond. So, if you have done any of these, leave me a comment and let me know if you enjoyed them!
Here are some more things to do on Jekyll Island;
- Jekyll Island Golf Club
- Mosaic Jekyll Island History Museum
- Horton’s Pond
- Faith’s Chapel
- Deep Sea Fishing
- 4H Tidelands Nature Center
- Horton’s House
Plan Your Visit to Jekyll Island With Kids
Jekyll Island is a place that everyone should visit at least once!
First, determine where you want to stay. There are plenty of Jekyll Island Airbnb and VRBO options, a dozen or so Jekyll Island Hotels, and the Jekyll Island campground. I highly recommend the Jekyll Island Club Resort . For a complete look at the different types of accommodations on Jekyll Island, read this post .
After booking your accommodations and airfare, if you plan to fly, you simply need to book bike rentals or a dolphin tour. And only if you want to! Actually, you can come and enjoy the island without a bunch of pre-planning and strict itineraries.
Lastly, upon arriving on Jekyll Island, consider making the Jekyll Island Visitor Center your first stop. This is something I do wherever we travel. These welcome centers are for people just like us. We often leave with maps, brochures, and even coupons!
Happy travels! And you can click here to read all of our family travel adventures!
