This Ship Is Sinking. Can I Jump to a Clientâs?

Ethics of Self-Preservation
I am in a senior position with a marketing agency that is in bad shape. Employees are on reduced hours and pay because our work has slowed substantially. The owners pledged to get new work but have not made any moves in that direction. Iâm looking for a new job, and Iâve seen some very appealing openings with current clients. Iâd be a great candidate, because I know many of the players, and they know and like my work. We donât have a noncompete, but I am worried I would further harm my employer if I applied for a job with its clients. Will the clients take it as a red flag? Will I accelerate the demise of my current company if I jump ship to a client? â Anonymous
You will not harm your employer by taking a new job with one of its clients. You are not responsible for your employerâs demise. If the roles were reversed, it would not offer you a fraction of the consideration you are offering. It is a job, and maybe you love it, but as I have said many times before, it will not and cannot love you back. If there are no noncompete issues (which may not matter anyway, as the Federal Trade Commission banned noncompetes last week), by all means, take a job with a client. If the client asks why youâre leaving your agency, youâre welcome to offer a diplomatic answer â or you can tell the truth. This is not an ethical quandary. It would be unethical only if, for example, you took a position with a client and then shared proprietary information about your former employer or its other clients.
The Overly Conscientious Boss
I manage a small, stellar team at a nonprofit. After annual reviews last year, I reached out to my supervisor to request raises for each member of my team and myself, factoring in both the annual cost-of-living raise and the merit raises I would like to see. I then shared what I was hoping to get each individual with that person, so they would know they had someone advocating for them. This seemed like a good decision at the time, to show I valued their hard work. However, we recently received our raise notifications, and, while everyone did get a salary bump, we didnât quite hit the numbers I was hoping for. Now, based on some reactions, Iâm worried that theyâre disappointed because expectations were set too high. Did I make a mistake in giving them the specific salary increases I was hoping for? How should I follow up? Should I follow up at all? â Anonymous
Though you meant well, you did make a mistake. In the future, you can certainly tell members of your team you are going to push for raises, but donât give them exact numbers until you know what those numbers are. In this instance, you set your team up for disappointment, and thatâs what youâre seeing right now. Iâm not sure if you should follow up. It may just deepen any resentment theyâre feeling â a bit of salt in the wound. They probably donât care about your good intentions right now. The best path forward is to learn from this misstep. And donât be too hard on yourself. You were acting from a good place. Iâd also think of some other ways you can show your team how much you value its hard work.
Too-Many-Ideas Guy
I work in social media on a digital media team at a nonprofit. There are two âstrategistsâ on the digital team. Their jobs are to help strategize, and my job is to manage and create content. One of the strategists has free range deciding when and how he will participate. For example, I am responsible for managing the video content on our TikTok channel. At a meeting, this co-worker announced we would introduce a weekly stream of video content that is not a good fit and does not align with the strategy I have been developing. Further, this co-worker has never produced a video, so I am not sure what role he would play. He becomes the de facto project manager of many of his ideas, âdirectingâ those who have the skills to do the work. My supervisor considers this co-worker a âgo-getter,â but I think he is being anti-collaborative and imposing more work on the rest of us. I try to stay out of all of his projects. This, however, is still exhausting. His ideas are endless. If I did address this, how would I? â Anonymous
People like this strategist thrive in the workplace because they come up with âinterestingâ ideas and donât trouble themselves with how those ideas come to fruition. Management focuses on the ideas, valuing quantity perhaps over quality, and doesnât really care who executes the ideas so long as they are executed. Of course this is exhausting, particularly because it seems that the strategist is throwing things at the wall to see what sticks.
If you want to address this, start by sharing how much you appreciate all his enthusiasm and creative ideas, but then share that sometimes, his ideas donât align with project aims and strategies and that it would be great if you could meet and collaborate, focusing not just on generating ideas but making sure those ideas are well aligned with organizational needs. If all else fails, become an idea person, too!
Grim Prospects
I am a 41-year-old creative/media industry professional who has struggled to find full-time work since the pandemic. I was just beginning to reach the junior rung of the management ladder when workplaces shut down and companies began downsizing. I have the additional misfortune of having spent most of my career in an industry that has been roiled by restructuring, mergers and mass layoffs. I have a masterâs degree from one of the most respected professional schools in my field, a wealth of experience and enthusiasm. Yet the jobs simply donât exist anymore for someone with my experience. I have been surviving on gig economy delivery jobs and dog walking for the past four years. I am terrified I will never get back on my real career path. Do I start over in another field? (I have an arsenal of transferable skills.) Do I go back to school? Iâm single, with no children, and no property tying me to any one place. â Anonymous
A shocking number of people in the media industry are in similar straits. Just this year, there have been mass layoffs at several companies and news organizations, and too few new jobs are being created to absorb so many job seekers. You are eminently qualified, and it is incredibly painful when being eminently qualified isnât enough.
That said, you can find a new career path. Youâre going to have to think creatively. A lot of the ideas you suggested in your letter may prove fruitful.
I have more questions than answers to offer. Start with looking at other fields where you can take your arsenal of transferable skills. What do you need to do to change career paths? How can you make as lateral a transfer as possible? If you return to school, have a plan and know what youâre getting into. What do you want to study and why? What is the job market like in your field of study? Can you afford a graduate education or second undergraduate degree? If you take on student loans, will you be able to manage the debt burden?
Finally, when you do apply to new jobs, present your experience as an advantage. Highlight your creativity, resilience, leadership skills and adaptability. Good luck as you move forward.

Advice From a Work Friend
Roxane gay offers tips on office interactions, money, career and work-life balance..
You will not harm your employer by taking a new job with one of its clients. You are not responsible for your employerâs demise. Hereâs why itâs not an ethical quandary .
Caring colleagues might mean well, but your taking on new and more projects is none of their concern . Youâre simply interested in developing a more robust skill set and should communicate that.
Expressing your political views nonstop at the office can backfire. While we can and should learn from one another , our every interaction need not be so intensely didactic.
Many organizations are grappling with how to manage A.I. in the workplace. A good place to start is developing guidelines .
To get out of a dead-end job, you have to be relentless . Start by mapping out what a path to quitting looks like.
If youâre the boss and have just made a difficult decision, over-explaining  that you did what was best for everyone wonât help.

Cruise ship worker accused of attacking, stabbing people with scissors on board vessel
JUNEAU, Alaska ( KTUU /Gray News) - A South African citizen was arrested by the FBI in Juneau Tuesday after he allegedly stabbed a cruise ship passenger and several employees who attempted to stop him.
A press release from the U.S. Attorneyâs Office in Alaska said 35-year-old Ntando Sogoni was employed on the Norwegian Cruise Lines ship Encore and was observed by other staff attempting to launch one of the shipâs lifeboats. He was then taken by security to the shipâs medical facility for an evaluation.
In the medical center, Sogoni reportedly physically attacked a nurse and a security guard. He then allegedly entered an examination room, grabbed a pair of medical scissors and attacked a woman receiving treatment, stabbing her in the arms, hand and face. When two security guards intervened, the court documents allege he stabbed one in the head and one in the back.
Once he was under authorityâs control, Sogoni was held in the shipâs jail before being taken into custody and being charged with assault with a deadly weapon in maritime and territorial jurisdiction. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. A federal district judge will determine the total sentencing.
Court documents say that the employee had just joined the shipâs crew at its Seattle port of call on May 5. The incident occurred approximately 16.5 miles from Vancouver Island. There is no word on whether the incident has delayed the ship or on the condition of those hurt.
The FBI Anchorage Field Office and FBI Juneau Resident Agency, and the Coast Guard Investigative Service are investigating the case.

LAOAG â U.S. and Philippine forces, backed by an Australian air force surveillance aircraft, unleashed a barrage of high-precision rockets, artillery fire and airstrikes Wednesday and sank a mock enemy ship as part of largescale war drills in and near the disputed South China Sea that have antagonized Beijing.
Military officials and diplomats from several countries watched the display of firepower from a hilltop along a sandy coast in Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.âs northern home province.

More than 16,000 military personnel from the United States and the Philippines, along with a few hundred Australian troops and military observers from 14 countries, were participating in annual combat-readiness drills called Balikatan, Tagalog for shoulder-to-shoulder. The drills, which started April 22 and end Friday, include a scenario of a foreign invasion of the Philippine archipelago.
Itâs the latest indication of how the United States and the Philippines have bolstered a defense treaty alliance that started in the 1950s amid their concern in recent years over China's increasingly aggressive actions in disputed territories in Asia.
Marcos has ordered his military to shift its focus to external defense from decades-long domestic anti-insurgency operations as Chinaâs actions in the South China Sea become a top concern. That strategic shift dovetails with the efforts of U.S. President Joe Biden and his administration to reinforce an arc of alliances in the Indo-Pacific region to counter China.
China has angered the Philippines by repeatedly harassing its navy and coast guard ships with powerful water cannons , a military-grade laser, blocking movements and other dangerous maneuvers in the high seas near two disputed South China Sea shoals. They have led to minor collision that have injured several Filipino navy personnel and damaged supply boats.
âWeâre under the gun,â Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Romualdez told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
âWe donât have the wherewithal to be able to fight all of this bullying coming from China so where else will we go?â Romualdez said. âWe went to the right party, which is the United States and those that believe in what the U.S. is doing.â
China has accused the Philippines of setting off the hostilities in the disputed waters by encroaching in what it says are its offshore territories, demarcated by 10 dashes on a map. It says the Chinese coast guard and navy have been forced to take action to expel Philippine coast guard and other vessels from those areas. The Philippines has repeatedly cited a 2016 international arbitration ruling based on the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea that invalidated Chinaâs claim over virtually the entire South China Sea on historical grounds.
China did not participate in the arbitration complaint filed by the Philippines in 2013, and has rejected the ruling and continues to defy it.
After being hit repeatedly by missile and artillery fire and bombs dropped by U.S. and Philippine warplanes during the combat drills, the mock enemy ship sank as black smoke billowed from its stern. The target ship was made in China but decommissioned by the Philippine navy in 2020 due to mechanical and electrical issues, according to the Philippine military.
Philippine military officials said the drills were not directed at any country. China has opposed military drills involving U.S. forces as well as increasing U.S. military deployments in the region, which it warned would escalate tensions and endanger regional stability.
For the first time in years, the combat exercises were staged in and near the fiercely contested Spratly Islands area, which China has closely guarded with its coast guard, navy and suspected militia flotillas.
On Monday, U.S. and Filipino marines transported by Black Hawk helicopters practiced securing an airfield in the country's northernmost town of Itbayat along the Bashi Channel near southern Taiwan. A small group of journalists, including from the AP, was invited to witness the air and ground combat maneuvers.
âThey're not operating in safe areas. They're operating slightly further to the western bounds and they're doing that in order to practice in ways that they might have to work for real,â said British Defense AttachĂ© to Manila Bea Walcot, who watched the ship-sinking drill.
Washington and Beijing have been on a collision course over Chinaâs increasingly assertive actions to defend its territorial claims in the South China Sea, and Beijingâs stated goal of annexing Taiwan, by force if necessary.
In February last year, Marcos approved a wider U.S. military presence in the Philippines by allowing rotating groups of American military forces to stay in four more Philippine military camps. That was a sharp turnaround from his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte, who feared that a larger American military footprint would antagonize Beijing.
China strongly opposed the move, which allows U.S. forces to establish staging grounds and surveillance posts in the northern Philippines across the channel from Taiwan, and in western Philippine provinces facing the South China Sea.
China has warned that the deepening security alliance between Washington and Manila and their ongoing military drills should not harm its security and territorial interests or interfere in the territorial disputes. The Philippines countered that it has the right to defend its sovereignty and territorial interests.
âAn alliance is very important to show China that you may have all the ships that you have, but we have a lot of firepower to sink all of them,â Romualdez said.
