The Battle for Central Florida Tourism Dollars Is Ratcheting Up

in SeaWorld , Theme Parks , Universal Orlando , Walt Disney World

The theme park battle in Central Florida is about to reach epic levels, literally. With Universal Orlando about to open Epic Universe, Walt Disney World must devise something to draw guests away from its cross-town rival.

It seems like Universal Orlando is dropping more information about Epic Universe every day , including bringing guests inside SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and adding more Harry Potter attractions.

For its part, the Walt Disney World Resort is adding Tiana’s Bayou Adventure to Magic Kingdom and has promised significant expansions of Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom.

But with all this competition between Central Florida’s big two, the little guy may get squeezed out of the theme park game. However, SeaWorld Orlando CEO Marc Swanson is trying to keep that from happening to his park.

SeaWorld’s CEO Mark Swanson said:

On Epic, I don’t have a crystal ball. I’m not suggesting Epic won’t have an impact or anything like that. I’m sure there’s going to be days where they are going to be very crowded. Generally, we view new things in the market that we expect will bring people to market as good for us and the industry as a whole. We’ve competed here certainly for a long time. I like what we have to offer.

Swanson met with SeaWorld Orlando investors to assure them that his theme park would have no attractions to draw in guests even after Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando had completed their big expansion projects.

Part of SeaWorld’s draw is its price. Tickets to SeaWorld are generally cheaper than those to Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort.

Since the end of the pandemic, SeaWorld Orlando has dramatically expanded its footprint, including adding the steepest rollercoaster in Florida. It is also working on building a new family-friendly penguin-themed coaster.

The theme park is also hosting its Halloween Haunted House event for the fourth year in a row, trying to compete with Disney World and Univeral Orlando’s Halloween events.

Like its rivals, SeaWorld has the Aquatica Water Park and Discovery Cove to keep guests on the property longer. However, unlike its competitors, SeaWorld still does not have a hotel complex on its property, which puts it at a disadvantage.

Swanson told investors that SeaWorld Orlando saw a two percent bump in visitors in the first quarter of this year, which led to a one percent rise in total revenue. But with guest levels flattening at Disney World and Universal Studios, how much longer can this spike last for the smaller Central Florida theme parks?

However, Swanson believes that after 50 years in Central Florida, SeaWorld will continue to bring in visitors, even after Disney World and Universal have completed their significant renovations.

Tourism in China surges during May Day holiday but travelers turn frugal

China has reported a surge in tourism during the just concluded Labor Day holiday, but travelers cut back on their spending, in a sign that consumption in world’s second largest economy remains sluggish.

Tourists made a total of 295 million trips within mainland China during the five-day-long holiday , which ended on Sunday, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said on Monday.

That was 28% more than the number of trips taken during the Labor Day holiday period in 2019, which lasted only four days. Months later, in 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic would strike China and the world, largely shutting down travel.

This year’s Labor Day tourism revenue was 166.89 billion yuan ($23.6 billion), only 13.5% higher than the 2019 level.

That means tourists were spending less money per trip compared to five years ago, as their average spending dropped 6% to 565.73 yuan ($80).

There was a similar pattern at China’s box office.

During the holiday period, 37.77 million people went to the cinema, exceeding 2019’s 35.09 million.

But ticket sales were about the same as 2019 levels, reaching 1.527 billion yuan ($215.7 million).

Chinese consumers have curtailed spending as the economy weakens and job prospects worsen. A record downturn in real estate, which accounts for 70% of household wealth, is weighing on consumer sentiment.

“[Chinese] consumer sentiment appears shaky judging by the sluggish retail sales spending momentum and the sharp reversal in the April services PMI,” analysts from TD Securities said in a recent research note.

On Monday, a private sector survey showed that the Caixin/S&P Global services PMI fell to 52.5 in April from 52.7 in the previous month.

The services sub-index under the government’s official non-manufacturing PMI also dropped sharply to 50.3 in April from 52.4 in March, according to statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics last week. It was the weakest reading since January.

In March, retail sales growth slowed to 3.1% from 5.5% in February. Consumer inflation increased by a muted 0.1% in March from a year earlier, down from 0.7% in February, which was the first increase in six months.

Resilient tourism

For many developing countries, including the least developed countries, small island developing states, countries in Africa and middle-income countries, tourism is a major source of income, foreign currency earnings, tax revenue and employment. Because tourism connects people with nature, sustainable tourism has the unique ability to spur environmental responsibility and conservation.

Sustainable tourism, including ecotourism, is a cross-cutting activity that can contribute to the three dimensions of sustainable development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by fostering economic growth, alleviating poverty, creating full and productive employment and decent work for all.

It can also play a role in accelerating the change to more sustainable consumption and production patterns and promoting the sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources, promoting local culture, improving the quality of life and the economic empowerment of women and young people, indigenous peoples and local communities and promoting rural development and better living conditions for rural populations, including small-holder and family farmers.

The use of sustainable and resilient tourism as a tool to foster sustained and inclusive economic growth, social development and financial inclusion, enables the formalization of the informal sector, the promotion of domestic resource mobilization and environmental protection and the eradication of poverty and hunger, including the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources and the promotion of investment and entrepreneurship in sustainable tourism.

Global Tourism Resilience Day (17 February), proclaimed by the General Assembly in resolution A/RES/77/269 , aims to emphasize the need to foster resilient tourism development to deal with shocks, taking into account the vulnerability of the tourism sector to emergencies. It is also a call for action for Member States to develop national strategies for rehabilitation after disruptions, including through private-public cooperation and the diversification of activities and products.

Donkeys have been humanity’s companions ever since they were domesticated thousands of years ago. Most human societies have a negative image of the domesticated donkey. But its wild counterparts like the African wild ass ( Equus africanus ), Onager (Asiatic wild ass) and Kiang (Tibetan wild ass) are still perceived positively for their majesty, beauty and grace.

India is home to the ghudkhar or the Indian Wild Ass found in the Little Rann of Kutch and the kiang or Tibetan Wild Ass found along the country’s Himalayan frontier.

Kiang are found in the high meadows and open plains of Ladakh. But it still remains a mysterious creature for most Indians.

This World Donkey Day, Down To Earth spoke to Tsewang Namgail from the Snow Leopard Conservancy about the species — its role in Ladakhi life and the threats it faces. Edited excerpts:

World Tourism Day is commemorated each year on 27 September, with celebrations led by UNWTO. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the global community of tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value and the contribution the sector can make in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals. In 2019, in line with UNWTO’s overarching focus on skills, education and jobs throughout the year, World Tourism Day will be a celebration on the topic ‘Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all’.

At the same time, it is a catalyst for equality and inclusivity. In many places, tourism employment gives women, young people and those living in rural communities the chance to support themselves and their families and to integrate more fully into wider society.

The true potential of tourism, both as a creator of jobs and as a driver of equality and sustainable development, is only just being realized. Providing decent work opportunities and contributing to developing professional skills are at the heart of this. Well managed, the continued growth of our sector will encompass countless opportunities and allow tourism to live up to its global social responsibility to leave no one behind.

Not one single economic, social or human activity prospers in isolation. For this reason, governments and stakeholders from the public and private sectors are increasingly working together to manage tourism in a responsible and sustainable manner and to ensure its enormous potential is properly realized.

Just as new technology is changing the way we travel, so too is it changing the way we work. Tourism is leading the way in providing workers with the skills and knowledge they need for the jobs of tomorrow. Embracing this creative spirit, including through effective collaboration with partners in the technology sector and in academia, will drive the creation of more and better jobs.

As we celebrate World Tourism Day, let us recognize the transformative power of tourism. Together, we can realize tourism’s potential to build a better, more equal future.

We believe that development of tourism is directly linked with community development. We want the local population to benefit by the development of tourism in their region and for this we should focus on development of soft skills among the locals.

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
