ACTION ZIPLINE TOURS (Big Bear Lake) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

Action Tours California

Action Tours California is Big Bear Valley’s one and only stop for Zipline and Segway tours. Both tours are offered year-round and in the winter months, they also offer scenic snowshoe tours. Their zipline course contains 9 unique runs and a suspension bridge at an elevation near 8,000 ft.  You will also travel off-road in their vehicles to and from the zipline site with fantastic views of Johnson Valley and Mt. San Gorgonio with the round trip tour time lasting approximately 3 hours. The tour guides on the zipline are really what sets them apart and really make for a fantastic experience.

Segway Tours

Their Segway tours take you through the village of Big Bear and down to the water as you learn about the history of the valley and take in the amazing views of the lake and snow-crested mountain tops in the winter months. If you’re lucky you may even catch one of our resident Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, or Hawks flying over the lake or perching in a nearby tree. Their snowshoe tours take you deep into the national forest and offer you a chance to discover Big Bear off-pavement and on the trail in areas that you would likely not discover on your own. Once you are done you can warm up with a cup of hot cocoa or coffee before heading back to the office.

Zipline Tours

Action Tours opened with just the zipline tours 12 years ago after the owner discovered zip lining while on vacation with her family in another state. She fell in love and upon returning home she decided to open the first zipline in the state of California right here in the Big Bear Valley. They remained the only zipline in the state for several years before others caught wind of the thrilling adventure. After years of success with the zipline, they began branching out and opened the Segway tours. Then in more recent years, Action Tours began hosting snowshoe tours.

Enjoy four seasons

One of the great things about Action Tours is their tour diversity. Not only are they located in a beautiful four-season resort town that offers exclusive views and seasonal attractions on each tour, but they also offer a unique variety of tours that allow you to enjoy your experience here in a way that feels fun, safe, and exciting. This is one of the reasons they attract guests of all ages; though they do see young adults and families with teens and adult children quite often on their tours.  Don’t let that hold you back though- their oldest zipline participant was 94 years young and he did in fact finish all 9 lines!

Themed Zipline Tours

The zipline tour is definitely the most popular activity they have and throughout the year you are likely to find themed events. One of the most popular is the Pumpkin Smash Tour which takes place in late September and runs through the month of October. This is a great way to add to the fun of the zipline tour by offering guests the chance to throw a hand-sized pumpkin at a target while ziplining and if you are lucky enough to hit the target they have a prize package waiting for you back at the office. A Destination Big Bear office favorite is the Zip and Sip tour which runs all year long as a promotional offer with Barrel 33 in the village area of Big Bear. Guests 21 and up can purchase wine or craft beer tasting passes along with their zipline tour and then they are given the opportunity to relax and sample California wine and seasonal craft beer after their tour.

Stay and Save

Destination Big Bear works with Action Tours as well to bring guests 10% off of the tour of your choice! Action Tours also works with the Southern California organizations to offer tours for family reunions and work retreats as well as multi-tour packages with lunches included for those looking for a well-rounded trip filled with fun and adventure. They also serve as a popular venue for local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts looking to earn badges, the valley’s local summer camps, and the Wounded Warrior Project as well as many colleges and other service groups. They love the Big Bear community and all of the guests that visit them from around the world which is why they are a fantastic representation of a local business that treats their guests like family.

Action Tours

When you vacation to Big Bear, you are probably looking for a thrilling experience that you will remember for years to come. Big Bear is home to a variety of outdoor activities in which adventurers will love to take part. Many of these Big Bear activities are available through Action Tours, a local outdoor adventure company that specializes in zip lines, Segways, snowshoe tours, and much more. Take a look at what kind of fun Action Tours can show you in Big Bear:

Flying Zip Line Tours

There is no better view in Big Bear than up from the treetops. Get an unparalleled view when you book one of the thrilling zip line tours with Action Tours. Their affordable zip line tours get you high up into the trees as you travel 35 miles per hour across nine different high-speed zip lines. Guests start with a short off-road trek through an unmaintained forest road that takes you from the van transportation to the start of the zipline course. While you wiz through the air you will see some of the most unique views around Big Bear that include Johnson Valley and Mount San Gorgonio, which is the highest peak in Southern California. Further, the zipline adventures aren’t the only thing you can do with Action Tours, the teetering suspension bridge is just as fun as you brave the heights. The zip line tours also feature various seasonal activities such as the Pumpkin Smash fall activity. You will be able to quickly zip down the line as you throw a pumpkin at your target—very exciting! Add your zip line tour to any additional packages to save.

Adventurous Segway Tours

Segway tours in other cities might be a slow affair in a city environment, but with Action Tours, you will be taking on the outdoor wilderness as well. Action Tours’ Segway routes will show you all the best views of Big Bear in the area. A guide to show you the basics of riding and using their local knowledge to give you the best tour content so you’re in for the perfect Segway PT experience. You will first learn how to operate the Segway with a safety crash course and then you will be on your way. Learn the history of Big Bear from a Certified Segway Tour Guide and explore the beautiful forest. Segways are the perfect way to take in the beauty around the Big Bear area and include treks through the forest and around Big Bear Lake. There is something truly unique about this mode of transportation that combines the serene experience of a hike with a bit of adrenaline from the speed of the Segway. The fall season is a great time to see the many leaves changing colors above you. Each tour includes an instructional session to teach you how to use your Segway.

Traversing Snowshoe Tours

Last but not least, schedule an exciting snowshoe tour when you visit Big Bear during the winter. Navigating Big Bear by snowshoe is an unforgettable experience during the winter months! You will go across various terrain and choose your level of difficulty for the trail. All ability levels are welcome for this immersive experience. Guests will enjoy the beauty of the winter solitude amongst the Jeffrey and Ponderosa pine trees surrounded by snow-capped Big Bear Mountains. The multi-terrain snowshoe tours are customized to each group so you can choose to go easy, go hard or any combination. The beauty of snowshoeing is that there are many trails you can enjoy that are not accessible via snowboarding or skiing, immersing you in the peace and quiet of the Big Bear wilderness. The snowshoeing tour is fun for all ability levels, and they provide your equipment (snowshoes and trekking poles) and training with experienced guides. Snowshoeing is a way to experience nature around Big Bear in a traditional winter fashion that is simply not available in other trekking methods. We highly suggest that you try out this uniquely Big Bear tour to see more around the lake and mountain areas than you could ever dream of seeing.

This place was great! With 9 runs of ziplining, the time will fly by. I just came here with my fiance and my brother yesterday afternoon for the 11 am tour (you can choose from 8 am, 11 am or 2 pm). There is a maximum limit of 18 people per tour. When you first arrive, you check in with the person at the front desk & sign a waiver (unless you ask for it to be sent to you via email to fill out before hand, but honestly, it's a fairly short form so you can just do it there). You watch a quick safety video (maybe 5- 8 minutes) to explain some basic rules. Then at the end, the guy on the video tells you that the tour guides work for tips (yea real subtle hint, lol). As mentioned by several previous yelpers, we gave $10 per person in our party as tip. Generally, the tour guides are really nice and we all felt they earned their tips. You have the option to store your stuff in a free provided locker (which reminds me, they say no cameras, but I snuck my camera phone in a pocket that has a zipper so that my phone would not fall out and I took photos, yea I'm a total rebel, lol) After we waited for the vans to come pick up all the people for the 11 am tour (we had a total of 15 in our tour), we were on our way to the zip line site. Once we arrived, everyone got out of the vans and piled into a pinzgauer. A few fellow yelpers had written about covering your nose when you get in, but I swear I didn't know why until I got in. It had a crazy strong smell of gasoline. But if you sit towards the front, the smell is not as strong as sitting in the back... but still, you can't avoid the smell. Then the drive will take you to the bottom of the zip line course so that you can use a non port-a-potty toilet (that has running water, soap, toilet paper and paper seat covers, in case you were wondering) for you to use before the actual zip lining because you won't be able to use the restroom again for another 1.5 hours... so you should go, even if you don't have to. Then everyone gets back into the pinzgauer & heads to the top to get their gear & a quick lesson on how get into your harness, helmet & gloves. A guy with a camera will then take photos of everyone. After that, you meet the rest of the tour guides. They are all very friendly & easily approachable (all pretty young guys, I would say probably in the early to mid 20's... and maybe one guy in his late 20's to early 30's... and they are all pretty good looking too) and they teach you how to break, steer, etc. Then you go on your first run. The 1st 2 runs are the shortest and then get longer as you progress. It's really awesome to watch the tour guides zip down the lines and do their crazy tricks. One of the tour guides, guy named Seth, said it didn't take them long to start doing tricks. And they make it look so effortless. After that short 1.5 hour that passes by, you get back into the pinzgauer and ride down to the vans. Then take the vans back to the office. Here you can pick up your stuff in the locker and then leave. Or you can stay and watch the photos the photographer took and purchase the ones you want for $5 each (not including tax) or buy a CD with all the photos on them for $45 (Again, not including tax... and yes it's ALL the photos the photographer took... so now you'll have a bunch of photos of random strangers... but it would be the cheaper option if you want more than 9 photos... and if you are already purchasing 9 photos, you might as well buy the CD to get the rest of the photos of you and your party). Now my additional comments: I know there may be some people who are afraid of falling... but honestly, they are very safe in what they do and when you jump off the 1st platform, you don't even feel that drop around your stomach of that feeling of falling because the tension of the cable that is holding you up is very strong and not loose. So you won't feel that drop, believe me. I've zip lined at another place before and they had a loose cable... that gave me that scary feeling around my stomach. You won't feel that here. Also you should check the weather before you come because they have canceled tours due to bad weather and they will not refund your money, but just reschedule another tour. When we went, the weather report on line said 10% chance of rain... well it did rain... but it was just for a short time and so we were off zip lining. If you have long hair, don't forget to bring something to tie your hair back. And also please don't forget the SPF because you wouldn't want to get skin cancer or get sun burned. Lastly, don't forget to bring cash because the tour guides "work for tips"... it's so important, that Action Zipline Tours had to tell you in the intro/ safety video. And while we were up there, they had their little tip container and a tour guide, with a nick name "reaper" (honestly, that was his nick name... and he's pretty young) even said they "work for tips", lol... so yea I guess you should tip them. Oh & I would come back.

We did the zipline yesterday. It was really nice. The staff were great, professional, very friendly and informative. They made it really easy for us being first timers. Nice experience..

Photo of Kristi B.

Was so excited for my 1st experience of Zipline tour's, but was massively disappointed. 1st, too large a group with very long wait times. Less than 30 mins total of ziplining, but over 2 hours of waiting on a platform crammed with other people. Very abusive, rude and unprofessional staff members, rather than helpful or encouraging. They neither care about, nor respect their own customers comfort, fun experience, time and/or hard earned money. They screwed themselves out of a very large tip from me. I'm actually in the service industry. And am appalled and embarrassed by their behavior, lack of customer service and professionalism. Save your time and money and go elsewhere! Big Bear Lake has so many other fun and less expensive adventures, ran by very nice people, unlike this outfit! The manager Paula hasn't even bothered to call me back to address my issues and experience, which is not at all surprising. Worst $300 I've EVER spent!

Photo of Brian U.

Had a great time. Everybody was very friendly from Dave the driver who was very comforting from "his stash" to his all encompassing information about Big Bear. To the office talent who tells me "I weigh just the right amount" to the zip line pros who kept me and my family on their toes, happy and safe. Thanks!!!!

Photo of Kevin S.

Fun but nothing amazing. Pretty price, the zip lines are fun but nothing spectacular. Cost $99 per person, but that doesn't include a tip to the guides or your photos. Can't bring your own camera for "safety reasons" but they make sure to have a photographer there who takes pics and charge $5 per photo. If you go, make sure to put the harness over your shirt/sweatshirt otherwise it will ride up and expose your stomach for all your photos. If you go during the winter, LAYER UP! I had just a jacket on by the office and thought I was ok. When we went to the course, I was freezing. Also wear thick shoes and thick socks, otherwise your feet will freeze. I guess it is worth doing once in a lifetime, but if you had a choice between hitting the slopes or doing the zip lining, I would probably go back to the slopes

My family and I had a GREAT time here. They had 9 zip lines, a rope bridge and the staff were fun and professional. I highly recommend Action Tours for an afternoon or morning of FUN!

Did the zip line today...while it was snowing! All the staff was great! Super helpful and made it so much fun! Wonderful memories with friends and family. Would definitely recommend!

Went yesterday. Last minute and was able to get in. Staff was super cool and helpful. Our van driver Phil gave lots of great info on the way up. About 20 minute van ride. The guys out at the zip line were very cool and professional. My only advice. They say no cameras. BUT what they fail to tell you on purpose. Is that you ARE allowed to bring gopros even have mounts on the helmets. Super bummed i didnt know this. But not a deal breaker. I would go again Have fun cheers!

My husband and I had the best time. Zip lining while it was snowing was awesome. The guys who worked for the company were so helpful. I Would totally recommend them.

Zipline Tour FAQ

  • Chevron down What is ziplining?

Ziplining is a thrilling outdoor activity during which a rider wears a harness which is securely connected, via carabiner and pulley, to a cable suspended high above the ground. The rider then glides along the cable for a uniquely exhilarating experience.

  • Chevron down What does an Action Zipline Tour include?

Your zipline tour includes nine zipline runs of various lengths, along with Pinzgauer (a four-wheeled safari jeep type vehicle) rides to and from our scenic launch deck on the mountain, a walk across a beautiful suspension bridge, historical information about the area from our expert tour guides, plus all the equipment and safety information you’ll need to have a safe and exciting adventure.

  • Chevron down How long is a zipline tour?

Your tour will last approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours. You should arrive at our Big Bear Boulevard office and departure point a minimum of 15 minutes before your tour time to watch the safety video and sign a liability waiver. Vans will not wait for late arrivals – no exceptions!

  • Chevron down How many zipline runs will we do?

Your zipline tour will take you on nine different ziplines of lengths ranging from 120 ft – 860 ft.

  • Chevron down Is it safe? Is it scary?

Ziplining is intended to be exciting and produce an adrenaline rush, but safety is our top priority. We inspect all elements of our course daily. Our cables can support up to 60,000 lbs and our ziplines are outfitted with Prusik braking systems so riders can experience the excitement while still feeling secure.

  • Chevron down How fast will we go?

Riders may reach speeds of up to 35-45 mph while ziplining.

  • Chevron down Do I need to make a reservation?

Prior reservations are required and are confirmed with payment by credit card or cash, however, same-day reservations/walk-ins are accepted according to availability. There is a 4-person minimum per tour, so please book accordingly. Tours are offered several times daily year-round. Please call or check our online reservation system for tour times and availability.

  • Chevron down Do tours book up fast?

  • Chevron down Do you have any specials or discounts for larger groups?

  • Chevron down Are there height or weight requirements?

For safety reasons, riders must be at least eight years of age and must weigh 65 lbs. The maximum weight is 250 lbs. Each participant will be discretely weighed upon check-in. There is no minimum height required but the maximum height our tour can accommodate is 6 feet 6 inches (6’6″). No refunds will be given if you do not meet height/weight requirements so please confirm before booking.

  • Chevron down Are there any health requirements or restrictions?

Riders must be in adequate health. Participants must have the use of both hands & feet and have vision in at least one eye. Riders should not be pregnant and be free from back, foot, heart or respiratory problems.

  • Chevron down What do we need to bring?

Riders should dress appropriately for outdoor activity in the mountains. Riders must wear closed-toed shoes, preferably tennis shoes or boots. Long hair must be tied back at all times. Riders should also bring appropriate outerwear and a sense of adventure!

Unfortunately, due to the nature of our tours, we cannot allow spectators onto the mountain.

Snowshoe Tour FAQ

  • Chevron down What is snowshoeing?

Snowshoeing is a winter sport in which participants wear specially designed gear on their feet which distributes their weight, allowing them to walk on snow without breaking through it.

  • Chevron down What is included in a snowshoe tour?

Our tour includes an experienced guide, snowshoes, trekking poles, and after-tour hot chocolate or coffee.

  • Chevron down How long is the tour?

Tours are three hours long which includes travel time to the tour site and putting on and taking off snowshoes. We spend about two hours snowshoeing and will cover approximately three miles during the tour but distance depends upon the speed of the participants on the tour.

  • Chevron down What kind of footwear should I wear?

We recommend you wear insulated, waterproof boots such as snow boots or waterproof hiking boots. Your feet can get wet and we don’t want you to be uncomfortable during the tour.

  • Chevron down What clothing should I wear?

Layer your clothing so it can be adjusted to your activity level and the weather.

  • Base layer:  Synthetics and wool retain warmth even when wet. Wear long underwear that wicks away moisture, insulates well and dries quickly. Choose from microlight, lightweight or midweight versions based on the temperature and your activity level. A zippered top lets you adjust body heat as you stop and go.
  • Insulating layer:  Polyester fleece makes a good insulating mid-layer since it retains heat when wet and breathes as you exercise.
  • Outer layer:  A waterproof, breathable shell jacket and pants keep you dry and fend off wind.
  • Wool or synthetic socks with wicking liners promote warm, dry feet.

Keep your head and hands covered to prevent loss of body heat and to protect from sunburn.

  • A wool or synthetic hat, headband or balaclava retains heat; a wide-brimmed hat or a ball cap can shade your eyes on sunny days.
  • Gloves or mittens are a must to keep your hands dry and warm. On cold days, combine shells with fleece mittens or gloves. In milder conditions, glove liners may be all you need.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen will protect you from burning UV rays which are especially intense at altitude and when reflected off of snow.
  • Chevron down What should I bring?

All participants should also bring the following:

  • Small backpack or daypack
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Energy bars or snacks
  • Camera or cell phone
  • Extra clothing layers
  • Extra socks
  • Chevron down What can I expect on a snowshoe tour?

Our tours are designed to give you an appreciation of our unique environment and an opportunity to spot wildlife while on tour. If there is something particular you would like to know, our guides are well versed in the natural history of the area and can answer most questions.

  • Chevron down What if there is no snow?

Since tours are dependent on natural snow we cannot guarantee that there will be enough snow for each date. If conditions are not ideal for the tour we will cancel or reschedule your reservation.

  • Chevron down I’ve never snowshoed before, is it hard?

It’s easy. As the saying goes, “if you can walk, you can snowshoe.” We go through safety and correct snowshoeing techniques before heading out on the tour.

  • Chevron down Can I bring my camera/phone?

Absolutely! We encourage you to capture the beauty of the forest with your camera or phone. A backpack is encouraged to keep your electronics out of the elements when not in use.

  • Chevron down Can I leave the tour and snowshoe on my own?

All participants must follow tour guides and stay with the group. It is very easy to become lost and disoriented in an unfamiliar wilderness area.

  • Chevron down May I tip my guide?

Yes, tips are always appreciated.
