It’s no joke. Pulling out a cell phone could get you kicked out of some stand-up events including Dave Chappelle’s arena tour. Also no joke is the fact that locking up your cell phone can lead to a better comedy experience.

Unplugging For Laughs

In a world of non-stop connectivity, many find it hard to believe that some comedians and management are insisting audiences disconnect . But in the world of live performances, cell phones open the door to extreme distraction, copyright violations, and misuse and misinterpretation of content. Phone-free events mean fewer intellectual property challenges, improved performances and experiences, and enhanced comedy development.

Chappelle who snagged the No. 6 spot on Pollster’s Top 10 Highest-Grossing Comedy Tours list between September 16, 2021 and Sept 15, 2022 with gross revenue of $21,499,305.50 and 185,015 tickets sold, seems sold on phone-free performances.

Prior to ticket purchase for 2023 shows, fans must indicate that they’ve accepted the ‘no cell phone’ policy. “THIS IS A CELL PHONE FREE EVENT,” reads the Ticketmaster statement linked to the Pittsburgh, PA performance. “We’re making shared memories. With your confirmation, you agree to place your phone in a locked pouch which you keep throughout the evening. If you need to use your phone, return to the distribution tent at the entrance. Anyone caught using a cell phone during the show will be immediately ejected.”

Noam Dworman, owner of Greenwich Village’s legendary Comedy Cellar, says the club’s ‘no cell phone’ policy was implemented approximately a year and a half before the COVID lockdown.

“Chappelle started doing it and I had a feeling it was going to become an industry standard and I tried to get ahead of it. But it did not become an industry standard.” Many comics wish it had.

Still, the policy remains in place at the Comedy Cellar and sister showrooms the Village Underground and Fat Black Pussycat where patrons are given padded envelopes for their phones and smart watches, and shows continually sell-out in spite of it all. Devices are sealed in the envelopes which customers keep in their possession during the shows. It may be a nuisance but it hasn’t hurt business.

Larger venues partner with companies like Yondr that provide magnetically locked cases that remain with owners and are opened via unlocking bases after the show.

“We don’t get complaints about it,” says Dworman. “I don’t think they love it, but they’re aware of it before they get there. Very few people are surprised by it.” He notes that beyond the audience, nearly all of the comedians who have hit the Comedy Cellar stage believe the policy has improved the shows.

Engagement = Comedy Feedback

Comedy veteran Judy Gold recalls being on stage at the Fat Black Pussycat for her hour-long show shortly after the ‘no cell phone’ policy was instituted. “About ten minutes, twelve minutes, I'm thinking, ‘What a great audience, everyone's so engaged.’ And I looked around, and I realized, ‘Oh, they just, you know, they don't have phones.’ And I almost started crying. Because it was like the old days, where the audience was a unit, where everyone was there for the same reason. They came there to laugh."

Gold, a two-time Emmy Award winner, author of the critically acclaimed book Yes, I Can Say That: When They Come for the Comedians, We Are All in Trouble and the woman behind the one-woman show Yes, I Can Say That! has become the go-to expert on free speech in comedy. A comedy historian who knows the nuances of the art form first-hand, she says that night at the Fat Black Pussycat, she felt like there was an engaged audience offering 100% of their attention to the comedy. Just like live comedy before cell phones.

When audiences aren’t paying attention, comedians lose the gauge for their content’s impact. Gold emphasizes that comedy is the only art form where the audience is the vital element of the creative process. When audience members are in their seats but distracted by their phones, they aren’t present and the craft of comedy suffers.

“You are a part of our creative process. And you need to understand that if you are going to be in the audience, have respect for the artist— and stand-up is an art. You go hear stand-up for the same reason you go to any other performance, or exhibit.”

Does Gold think there’s any chance that comedy will inspire phone-free policies for other forms of live performances?

“I certainly hope so. Because when you are looking at your phone, you are not present. You are not a part of the audience. You are not not only distracted, but you're distracting other people.”

Movie screening of Dave Chappelle’s Pilot Boy Productions ‘untitled’ documentary. Chappelle will screen his ‘untitled’ documentary across 10 arenas throughout the US. The independent film is produced by Dave Chappelle and produced and directed by Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar ( American Factory ). Fueled by the murder of George Floyd, shut-in by the closures of business due to the pandemic, and unable to perform around the country, the movie follows Chappelle as he provides the community he calls home with two things desperately needed in difficult times – economic and comic relief. What began as an experimental socially-distanced live comedy show in a neighbor's cornfield, grew into an unforgettable summer with his neighbors, friends and fellow comedians.  Ultimately, Chappelle’s cornfield concerts would serve as a model of courage not just for his community, but for the entire live entertainment industry.

No cellphones, cameras or recording devices will be allowed at this show. Upon arrival, all phones and smart watches will be secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show. To the United Center : The #19 United Center Express Bus runs on game days. Service begins 90 minutes prior to game time, runs every 10 minutes until 30 minutes until start of game. Board at stops starting southbound on Michigan and Randolph. Connections are made with Metra trains at Millennium Station, Ogilvie Center and Union Station. The #20 Madison Bus travels west on Madison Street, starting downtown at Wabash Street and runs every few minutes, making all stops to the United Center.

From the United Center : The #19 United Center Express and the #20 Madison buses run every few minutes, departing from the eastbound side of Madison Street. Buses make all stops.

Suites Parking

Two reserved parking passes will be valid in lots C and K. The other two reserved parking passes will be for parking in lots A, B, D, or L. Holders of these passes will be directed to A, B, D, or L lots by traffic police and parking attendants based on traffic conditions. Parking passes are good for one space each. All parking passes are mobile entry only.

For all special events, each Executive Suite Holder will receive two complimentary parking passes per event ordered. These two passes will be for reserved parking located in lots C and K. In addition, Executive Suite Holders will also receive the option to purchase four additional parking passes in lots C and K for special events.

Suite Holder parking passes are also valid for buses or limousines under specific guidelines.

Lexus Club Parking

Lexus Club Seat members have reserved parking in fenced, well-lit and clearly marked parking lots adjacent to the United Center for all Blackhawks or Bulls preseason, regular season and playoff games. All Lexus Club members who purchase tickets to other events may also purchase one preferred parking pass (in lot C or K) for such events. Details on how to obtain parking for other events are included with the fax transmission announcing each event.

Lexus Club Seat members with two to four tickets receive a complimentary, reserved parking space in a closed-in, paved lot for all Blackhawks or Bulls preseason, regular season and playoff games. Lexus Club Seat members with five seats or more will be provided with two parking passes.

UBER ZONE FAQs:

What is the Uber Zone (Lot E) at the United Center? To increase and streamline the fan experience for guests who take Uber to and from the United Center, the new Uber Zone is located at the corner of Madison Street and Wood Street (Lot E) and will combine the three former Uber locations around the arena. Traffic leading to the three prior Uber pickup locations 1) Zone A, previously located on Wood Street & Washington Blvd. near Lot A, 2) Zone D, previously located on Monroe Street & S. Paulina Street near Lot D and 3) Zone F, previously located on Monroe Street & Seeley Ave. near Lot F will now be directed towards the one new Uber Zone in Lot E.

What is the location of the Uber Zone? The new Uber Zone at the United Center is located on the corner of Madison Street and Wood Street. Fans will enter and exit through the sidewalk entrance located on Madison Street and cars will enter the lot by turning into the Uber Zone from Madison Street. Cars will exit on Warren Blvd.

What are the hours of operation? On event days, the Uber Zone is open two hours prior to games, concerts and events and will remain open up to one hour after each event. On non-event days, the Uber Zone will be closed and Uber rides will be dropped off near the corner of Madison Street and Wood Street outside of the Uber Zone.

What is the pickup process for fans?

• Using the Uber app, fans inside the United Center will call an Uber ride.
• Guests will then head to the new Uber Zone located at the corner of Madison Street and Wood Street in front of the United Center.
• When arriving, fans will show the Uber attendant the lane number their driver is in.
• Fans will be shown the location where their Uber vehicle is located to start their next journey.

What is the dropoff process for fans? When Uber drivers arrive with guests at the United Center, they will be instructed to pull into the Uber Zone from the Madison Street side to drop off fans. Once exiting the vehicle, guests will walk out of the main entrance located on the corner of Madison Street and Wood Street. Guests can cross the street to the United Center and are encouraged to enter through the East Atrium.

About Chris Rock: Lauded by peers and critics alike, Chris Rock is one of our generation’s strongest comedic voices. With a career spanning more than three decades, Rock has enjoyed ongoing success in both film and television as a comedian, actor, writer, producer, and director.

In March, Rock made his highly anticipated return to live comedy with his Ego Death World Tour 2022.

He can recently be seen in Sally Potter’s short film, “Look at Me” and David O’Russell’s, “Amsterdam.” Next up he can be seen starring in the Higher Ground produced biopic, “Rustin.” He is also set to direct an Untitled Chris Rock project in 2023. His animated series “Everybody Still Hates Chris” is set to stream globally on Paramount + and Comedy Central. Rock serves as the executive producer and narrator.

In 2021 Rock starred as Loy Cannon in season 4 of FX’s Emmy-winning drama series “Fargo.”  He also teamed up with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures in the reimagining of the newest Saw franchise movie, “Spiral,” in which he produced and starred in. His most recent standup special, “Total Blackout: The Tamborine Extended Cut,” is currently streaming on Netflix.

In 2014 he led the ensemble cast of “Top Five,” a critically acclaimed comedy feature that he also wrote and directed. In 2009 Rock ventured into the documentary world as a writer and producer of “Good Hair,” and in 2014 he executive produced “Eat Drink Laugh: The Story of the Comic Strip,” a documentary recounting the history of one of New York’s most famous comedy venues.  His feature acting credits include The Week Of, the Grown Ups and Madagascar franchises, 2 Days in New York, Death at a Funeral, Nurse Betty, Dogma, the hip-hop comedy CB4, and New Jack City.

His television work includes serving as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” from 1989 - 1993 and as executive producer, writer and narrator for the series “Everybody Hates Chris.” The series ran from 2005 - 2009 and is still one of the highest rated syndicated shows in the world.

In 2011, Rock made his Broadway debut starring in Stephen Adly Guirgis’s “The Motherf**ker With The Hat.”

Rock has won four Emmy Awards, three Grammy Awards, and is a New York Times Best-Selling Author. In addition, he received two nominations for the 2016 Emmy Awards, for Outstanding Director for a Variety Special for “Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo,” and Outstanding Special Class Program for the 88th Annual Academy Awards.

Guests maintain possession of their devices at all times and can access them throughout the event only in designated Phone Use Areas within the venue in the BMO Club on the Event Level, Main Concourse near Section 101, on the Suite Level near Suite 18, and Upper Concourse near Sections 223/224. All devices will be re-secured in Yondr pouches before returning to the performance space 

All pouches and equipment are routinely sanitized. The Yondr staff is trained and required to follow safety guidelines and hygiene protocols.

At the conclusion of the performance, Yondr staff will be stationed at all exits to unlock your phone. Additionally, Yondr will be located on the plaza for all guests exiting the atrium.

Dave Chappelle coming to Xcel Energy Center, and audiences won't be allowed to bring their phones

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Comedian Dave Chappelle is set to return to the Twin Cities this fall for the first time since a public uproar caused his First Avenue gig last summer to change venues last minute.

Chappelle is set to stop at Xcel Energy Center on Sept. 23 as part of a nationwide tour that starts in August. Tickets will go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster.

According to Xcel officials, no cell phones, cameras or any other recording devices will be allowed into the arena during the event:

"Upon arrival, all phones and smart watches will be secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show. Guests maintain possession of their phones throughout the night and, if needed, may access their phones at designated Yondr unlocking stations in the lobby. Anyone caught with a cellphone in the venue will be immediately ejected. We appreciate your cooperation in creating a phone-free viewing experience."  

Chappelle was scheduled to perform at First Avenue last July, but the show was moved to the Varsity Theater at the last minute after fan outcry about transphobic material in the comedian's Netflix specials.

He taped one of his Netflix specials at Target Center in Minneapolis .

Dave Chappelle, other artists make fans lock phones in pouches during show

NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - Fans waiting to get into Dave Chappelle's show at Radio City Music Hall tapped and texted away on their phones. Hopefully, they got it all out of their system because phones are not allowed inside the show. In fact, show-goers have to lock them up in little pouches.

Chappelle has partnered with a company called Yondr, whose mission is to create phone-free spaces.

"Yondr is a response to life in the digital age, kind of around the amount of time we spend behind screens," said Kelly Taylor, Yondr's director of marketing.

At Chappelle's show, every phone goes into a lockable neoprene pouch, no excuses. The patron holds onto the pouch, but it can only be unlocked by a Yondr team member with a proprietary unlocking mechanism.

Chappelle was one of the first artists to use the system, but Taylor said its popularity is quickly growing with artists like Alicia Keys, Guns N' Roses and Tracy Morgan joining the phone-free movement.

"On the one hand it protects their content from leaking online," Taylor said. "And then there's also the experiential component, which is that it feels better to perform to a crowd that's present, engaged, and actually with you in the room instead of on that's constantly texting or recording you."

Being told you can't have any access to your phone for a few hours can be a little scary for some, but most people waiting in line told us they actually don't mind being forced into a little digital detox.

"I think it's kind of old school to do that, I like that, kind of bring it back to the old times," said one ticket-holder.

But some feel a little uncomfortable being totally disconnected.

"As a mom, I think that is kind of out there, it's too much," Debra Frasier said. "I want to be able to have the capability to use my phone or to let somebody contact me if they need to in an emergency."

Show-goers can keep their phones on vibrate and go to one of the phone-access zones whenever they need to check it. But Yondr says that if you can hold off you may just find the phone-free experience to be kind of fun.

Laugh out loud: Dave Chappelle to bring comedy tour to Charlotte

Dave Chappelle is bringing laughs to the Queen City this fall.

The acclaimed comedian and actor's "It's a Celebration B!%?#&$!" will make stops in five additional cities, including a stop at the Spectrum Center on Thursday, Oct. 26.

ABU DHABI – American comedian Dave Chappelle said Thursday a “genocide” is striking the Gaza Strip amid the Israel-Hamas war to cheers during his performance in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, while urging Americans to fight antisemitism so Jews don’t feel like they need to be protected by Israel.

Chappelle’s comments come as Abu Dhabi has maintained its diplomatic relations with Israel even as it has increasingly criticized its conduct in the seven-month war.

Meanwhile, while pro-Palestinian marches have swept across the wider Middle East since the war began, protests and speech remains tightly restricted in the Emirates, a federation of seven sheikdoms on the Arabian Peninsula.

Even before coming on stage, the full crowd at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena cheered as DJ Trauma, who accompanied Chappelle on the trip, played the song “My Blood is Palestinian” by the Palestinian singer Mohammed Assaf. The thousands there agreed to place their switched-off mobile phones in locked pouches for the performance — a standard feature of Chappelle's shows.

About halfway through in a wide-ranging comedy set in Abu Dhabi, Chappelle, a Muslim, initially said he had been told by his friends either to discuss the war or not. From the audience, a woman screamed: “Free Palestine!” The crowd cheered.

Chappelle then said the Gaza Strip faces a “genocide." He also said that making Jews safer in America amid rising cases of antisemitism would make them realize they don’t need Israel as an ultimate protector.

Another moment also displayed just how diverse the crowd was in the Abu Dhabi. In telling another joke about how Jews cheer while drinking, Chappelle said “l’chaim,” or “to life” in Hebrew, which another man shouted back from the audience.

But when touching on the upcoming U.S. election, Chappelle’s mention of President Joe Biden — who has promised “ironclad” support for Israel — drew widespread boos throughout the arena. Donald Trump drew scattered cheers.

Chappelle, as other artists during the performance, told some racy jokes and swore. But they largely avoided discussing local politics — though Chappelle did make a sly joke about the UAE’s widespread surveillance network and another deadpanning about “how difficult is it to be gay” in the country as homosexuality is illegal.

But he also came out on stage with a falcon on his arm — a symbol for the UAE.

Chappelle, 50, won the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2019. He performed at the Abu Dhabi Comedy Week.
