There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

The slower pace, relaxed approach to life and old-world qualities in Portugal are some of the highlights of this spectacular region and are reflected in the hotels and restaurants on this trip. En route, take the time to explore several historical villages and indulge in the rich gastronomic delights this area has to offer. As you progress, make a stop at the village of Favaios , seated on one of the most beautiful plateaus in the Douro region. Savory local cuisine awaits, alongside a unique fortified wine known as Moscatel , only produced here and in Setúbal . The village also boasts a special four-cornered loaf, crafted from locally sourced wheat and baked in a traditional wood-fired oven. It’s a daily staple for many locals who frequent the bakery for a fresh loaf.

Venture towards the heart of the Douro Valley as you cycle to your final destination in this lush vineyard-strewn region. The countryside en route to Peso da Régua offers a tableau of traditional homes nestled amid rolling hills, providing a genuine taste of local life. The culmination of your journey is Peso da Régua, a pivotal town adorned with a rich tapestry of history and traditions deeply rooted in wine cultivation and celebrations.

Nestled along the tranquil banks of the Douro River, Peso da Régua has been instrumental in the port wine industry. This is where barrels of precious liquid were once loaded onto distinctive boats, known as barcos rabelos , and shipped downstream to Vila Nova de Gaia for aging in age-old wine lodges. Here, the vineyards cascade down terraced slopes towards the embracing river, offering a spectacle of breathtaking vistas awaiting admiration from vantage points like São Leonardo at Galafura and Santo António do Loureiro.

As the day gracefully transitions into the evening, retreat to the serene ambiance of Quinta da Pacheca, your hotel for the night and one of the top wine estates and hotels in the vicinity. Things to know.

Embark on a self-guided cycling odyssey, designed for a tailor-crafted and adaptable getaway on two wheels, unveiling wonders at your own pace while having the freedom to alter your itinerary or path as needed. Our dedicated team meticulously handles all facets, encompassing lodging arrangements, thorough planning, GPS navigational aid, and continuous support, to gift you a tranquil and engrossing journey. This venture champions autonomy, personal expression, and genuine cultural engagements.

Our tours are segmented into three tiers of difficulty: Leisurely , Moderate , and Challenging , categorized by the usual daily routine, although there may be variations in difficulty throughout the trip.

Leisurely tours are ideal for those in pursuit of a relaxed adventure amidst stunning landscapes, without the challenge of covering long distances or tackling rough terrains. These journeys typically cover 30-50 km each day, with an elevation gain of up to 500m. This allows plenty of pauses to relish the scenic vistas, enjoy local delicacies, and explore charming villages and towns along the way.

Moderate bike tours are tailored for those seeking a beautiful blend of scenic trails and a dash of challenge. Generally covering 50-80 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 1000m, these tours traverse enchanting landscapes and delightful villages, featuring a mix of flat and rolling terrains. They not only provide ample chances to stop and explore but also ensure a satisfying cycling workout.

Challenging bike tours are meant for experienced cyclists eager to push their limits. Spanning 80-120 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 2000m, these tours entail tackling steep ascents and demanding terrains. Though these tours require a high level of fitness and endurance, the exhilarating feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day, coupled with breathtaking views, makes the endeavor thoroughly rewarding.

We are devoted to discovering the ideal match for you. We collaborate with numerous lodging providers who meet our standards, although their availability may fluctuate, especially during peak demand times. Furthermore, we can customize your vacation to align with your preferences and budget, ensuring we identify the most fitting choice for your needs.

We advise booking your tour at the earliest opportunity, especially for popular tourist destinations with limited lodging availability. Prime choices often get snapped up for the summer before spring even arrives.

Addressing dietary preferences can vary based on their complexity. In Portugal, vegetarian options are generally available, but finding vegan meals might be more challenging in rural areas or smaller towns. Notably, lunch stops are often at traditional eateries which may not cater to special dietary needs beyond their standard menu. Keep this in consideration as you plan your adventure.

The ideal cycling season in Portugal stretches from mid-April to mid-October. In elevated regions like the Serra da Estrela, it’s preferable to cycle from mid-May to September.

Tours in Portugal can continue in light rain with the appropriate clothing. Summer frequently witnesses afternoon thunderstorms, making early tour starts recommended. If challenging weather conditions are expected, we’ll strive to adjust the tour beforehand.

This Douro bike and wine tour is well-suited for beginners with some biking experience. The e-bike route spans approximately 125-129 miles / 200-206 kilometers through wine-growing landscapes. To ensure a leisurely ride, transfers from the river bank to hilltops are arranged, as the inclines are too steep for casual cyclists, even with e-bikes.

Despite Portugal’s mountainous terrain, the routes are generally moderate, with most days starting with a transfer to high points followed by mainly downhill rides offering spectacular views. Expect easy riding along rural roads with minimal traffic, except for brief encounters with more cars in Lamego and along a two-lane road on Days 5 and 6, respectively. On Days 4 and 7, the ship’s berthing times allow you to cycle long distances.

Gradients are manageable with provided e-bikes—premium pedelecs equipped with Bosch or Shimano mid-mounted motor, making this tour easy to moderate depending on your preference and assistance level.

Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

  • Duffle bag for all your personal belongings
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
  • Comfortable biking clothes
  • Running shoes
  • Rain jacket
  • Warm jacket or sweater
  • Dinner clothes
  • Spare clothes for layering
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

Be prepared for changeable weather, since you travel through a climatic region between mountains and sea. It can often be quite cool and temperature fluctuations between morning and evening are the rule—so you need clothing for both hot and cool conditions.

Don’t forget to pack a warm jacket or sweater and rain protection, as weather changes and occasional rain showers are common in northern Portugal during spring and autumn.

All meals are included throughout your Douro bike and wine tour, from dinner on the first day to breakfast on the last. Enjoy varied buffets with regional and seasonal specialties, daily live cooking and wine list adapted to the region. Lunch is provided either as a picnic or onboard buffet, depending on the itinerary.

Enjoy buffet breakfasts and indulge in seven multi-course buffet dinners. If the weather allows, there will be a BBQ buffet on the sun deck. All beverages are included, except for champagne, bottled wine, and exclusive rarities. Special dietary needs like vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free are easily accommodated.

During this Douro bike and wine tour, you’ll be staying at ALVA Douro River cruise ship. The “ALVA” stands for the epitome of modern luxury, representing the newest addition to the esteemed A-ROSA fleet since its construction in 2018. Spanning 80 meters (260 ft) in length, the ship offers an expansive layout of public spaces.

Onboard the A-ROSA ALVA you can find…

  • Spacious sun deck with service and relaxed atmosphere
  • Heated outdoor pool and outdoor shower
  • Panorama lounge with outdoor area
  • Lounge bar and dance floor
  • Relaxation room
  • Gym with modern cardio equipment: Elliptical trainer, bicycle ergometer and treadmill
  • Casual dress code

With a maximum speed of 22 km/h (14 miles/h), the A-ROSA ALVA ensures a comfortable and peaceful cruising experience along the Douro River.

Spa & fitness

Participants of the Douro bike and wine tour also have an opportunity to experience the ultimate relaxation onboard the A-ROSA ALVA with the SPA-ROSA facilities. Indulge in a wide range of beauty and body treatments with high-quality BABOR products. Unwind in the sauna and chill out in the relaxation room—professionally trained spa and beauty team is at your disposal.

For those seeking an active escape, the well equipped fitness room offers modern cardio equipment including elliptical trainers, bicycle ergometers, and treadmills. With awesome lounges and amazing views, find your holiday chill zone on this Douro bike and wine tour.

The ship boasts 63 spacious, comfortable cabins accommodating up to 126 guests. There are three categories of cabins, and for your Douro bike and wine tour you can choose the one you prefer. All three cabin types are equally equipped and they have the same layout : they feature modern furnishings and amenities including air conditioning, safe, TV, fly screen, hair dryer, telephone, bathroom with shower and toilet, sauna towel, wool blanket, and bathrobe on request. The difference among cabin types is the deck and the windows .

For your Douro bike and wine tour, your guides will provide e-bikes —premium pedelecs equipped with Bosch or Shimano mid-mounted motors with full control over assistance levels, so you could adjust it to your needs.

If you want, you can also rent a helmet with your guides. Let us know if you’re interested upon checkout.

From the Coast to the Interior

Welcome to Portugal! Your guides will meet you in Oporto for a transfer to the UNESCO town of Guimarães. On a guided tour, learn about the major events that took place here in the 12th century and lead to the birth of an independent nation, as evidenced by the inscription “ Aqui nasceu Portugal ” (“Portugal was born here”), which can still be seen in the city’s old wall. Then it’s off to our hotel for a light lunch followed by a bike fitting and safety talk. Our first ride will take us through Vidago’s verdant countryside before we return to the hotel for dinner in the Grand Ballroom restaurant.

Meals:  Lunch / Dinner Destinations:  Oporto, Guimarães, Vidago Accomplished: 13 miles / 21 km, elevation gain: 1,010 feet / 308 meters Longer Option: 15 miles / 24 km, elevation gain: 1,574 feet / 480 meters Accommodations:  Vidago Palace Hotel

Taking It Up a Notch to Chaves

Breakfast will power us up for today’s ride to the town of Chaves, just south of the Spanish Galicia border. Pedal into the heart of Trás-Os-Montes, which translates to “Behind the Mountains”—an area that was long isolated from the rest of Portugal and still remains largely unknown to foreign visitors. With the option to hop in the van for this morning’s first section, set out from our hotel for a climb shaded by century-old sycamore trees. We’ll stop in the charming mountain town of Boticas, then continue past small valley hamlets and family farm plots. Descend into Chaves, once the frontline of the Portuguese defense against Spanish incursion, and enjoy lunch in the city’s historic downtown. Ride or shuttle back to our hotel where the afternoon is yours to lay out by the pool or enjoy the spa. Tonight we dine at a boutique winery with our friend Nuno and his wife, where we’ll enjoy a sampling of barbecued meats, fish, and veggies and wines from the estate.

Meals:  Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Boticas, Chaves, Loivos, Souto Velho Accomplished: 40 miles / 65 km, elevation gain: 3,559 feet / 1,085 meters Shorter Option: 19 miles / 30 km, elevation gain: 1,092 feet / 333 meters Accommodations:  Vidago Palace Hotel

From Behind the Mountains to the River Below

Today we ride south towards the Douro Valley and our destination in the riverside wine town of Pinhão. Whether you choose to begin pedaling from our hotel or start further out from the mineral-water village of Pedras Salgadas, the destination is the same: we’ll reach the town of Vila Real, home to Casa de Mateus, a Baroque 18th-century palace famously depicted on bottles of locally produced rosé wine of the same name. After lunch, cut across the northern ridge of the upper Douro before an exhilarating descent through charming hamlets and hillsides rippled with terraced vineyards. Our final stretch brings us to the majestic Douro River and our hotel for the night, located right on its banks. This afternoon, choose to lounge by the pool or head into town to shop for wine at the local boutiques. Tonight we’ll dine at our favorite historic quinta , a Portuguese wine estate. Our meal is paired with voluptuous red table wines and finished with the estate’s own vintage Port.

Meals:  Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations:  Pedras Salgadas, Casa de Mateus, Pinhão Accomplished: 43 miles / 69 km, elevation gain: 2,755 feet / 840 meters Longer Option: 50 miles / 81 km, elevation gain: 3,690 feet / 1,125 meters Accommodations:  Vintage House Douro

Let the Douro Lead the Way

This morning we step straight from our hotel grounds aboard a traditional Rabelo boat and embark on a river cruise up the Douro. Mother nature has done her part in this UNESCO-protected valley, providing an exceptional climate for ideal wine growing conditions. But the human element of engineering is impossible to ignore, with vineyards hand-carved out of the schist over hundreds of years. After lunch on dry land, it’s time for an afternoon spin along the Douro’s riverbank to the town of Peso da Régua and our magnificent hotel for the next two nights. This evening you’re free to dine on your own; choose a trendy wine bar or a tasquinha (tavern restaurant) in town, depending on your mood.

Meals:  Breakfast / Lunch Destinations:  Pinhão, Peso da Régua Accomplished:  17 miles / 27 km, elevation gain: 1,273 feet / 388 meters Longer Option: 25 miles / 41 km, elevation gain: 2,703 feet / 824 meters Accommodations:  Six Senses Douro Valley

The Making of a King

Today’s ride promises to be our most challenging—but not without its rewards (or the option to fall back on the support van). Pedal to the city of Lamego, first following the upper banks of the Douro overlooking the river below. Tackle a steep section, then turn inland for a gradual climb up sinuous vineyard-sided roads above the river valley. It was here in Lamego that the Bishop of Braga crowned the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, in 1140. Pause for coffee and a light snack at a local pastelaria before we visit the ornate Lamego Cathedral, Our Lady of Assumption. Prepare for a rewarding descent toward our lunch spot at a local family-run winery, where the flavorful menu pulls from seasonal produce and is paired with wines of the estate. Our final evening begins with an aperitif, followed by a gastronomic dinner to remember at our hotel’s contemporary restaurant.

Meals:  Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations:  Lamego Accomplished: 29 miles / 47 km, elevation gain: 3,254 feet / 992 meters Longer Option: 35 miles / 57 km, elevation gain: 4,271 feet / 1,302 meters Accommodations:  Six Senses Douro Valley

Obrigado for Everything, Oporto!

Day 4 | Round Trip through local Vineyards

Today you have an optional round trip available that takes you through the beautiful local vineyards in arguably the Duoro valleys most pictuersque spot. Today begins with a boat ride on a traditional Portugues cargo boat to Regua. You then leave Régua by bike and head south towards the relatively unknown and staggeringly beautiful town of Lamego. Here you will find a charming historical town, complete with a grandiose cathedral, perched atop a rather extravagant set of steps, as well as a 5th century castle and a bustling town centre. After exploring Lamego, the route ends with a descent back into Peso da Régua.

Distance 26 miles (42 km)

Day 6 | Train transfer to Porto

Day 6 | Train transfer to Porto

Your final day begins with a transfer to Régua train station and a scenic train ride to the marvellous city of Porto. There is also an upgrade option to return to Porto by boat, including lunch with local produce. You have all day to explore the city, whether that is on foot or by hopping on the excellent tram network. The city has so much to see and do that a list here would do it a disservice, but we love spending time on the riverside at Cais da Ribeira. Please note that pre-booking this train journey is not possible, so tickets are not included and must be purchased locally (approx. €8pp).

"Sometimes you have a holiday which exceeds expectations and this was one of them, it was made very personal by Nuno and was like staying at his house, the routes and views on the ebikes were excellent, and the 40 year old port that Nuno gave us was a very nice touch. I have no complaints at all with your service, which was very good. It was a holiday to be remembered for a long time." S. Waters Travelled on: 08/06/2019 Booked by: George Abraham
