Historic Druid Hills Home & Garden Tour returns April 26-28

T he Historic Druid Hills Home & Garden Tour is back April 26-28, and this year our eleven featured properties tell the tale of a community that has fought to keep Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision for the neighborhood intact. Even as the population of intown Atlanta grew, shrank, and then really took off, the spirit of Druid Hills continued to shine and is now brighter than ever.

Olmsted’s Vision

Olmsted, renowned landscape architect and designer of some of the country’s most famous parks and estates (think Central Park and The Biltmore), believed in the importance of open spaces for the health and well-being of urban residents. He incorporated this philosophy into his design for Druid Hills and aimed to seamlessly integrate natural landscapes with residential development. His plan called for winding roads and pathways that followed the contours of the land, rather than imposing a rigid grid pattern. Generous lot sizes were very intentional, to create a sense of openness and privacy for residents, while featuring gracefully landscaped views. The majestic tree canopy Druid Hills enjoys today is thanks to Mr. Olmsted. Once the neighborhood was established and gaining momentum, Druid Hills Civic Association (DHCA) was founded in 1938 to preserve it for residential use and to protect the unique heritage of the area.

The Fight for Druid Hills

Over the years, Druid Hills, like other intown Atlanta neighborhoods, shifted and adapted as housing needs and lifestyles changed. And, as with so many other cities across the United States during the mid-20th century, Druid Hills faced the threat of being divided by highway construction. The proposed I-485 would have cut right across the Olmsted Linear Parks and right through the heart of the idyllic neighborhood that Olmsted so carefully planned. That threat, along with economic changes, racial tensions, aging infrastructure, and governmental policies, led many of the residents to leave the neighborhood for newer suburbs. Some of the large homes they left behind were split up into apartments or became boarding houses, and others were simply abandoned.

But, we all know the happy ending for Druid Hills. Lots of enthusiastic residents stayed or found their way to historic homes they lovingly cared for. Many of them banded together, along with the DHCA, to fight the long fight against the highway. Thankfully, the “Roadbusters” prevailed, and the neighborhood remained intact.

More and more, prospective homeowners are drawn to the community, and aren’t afraid to tackle big projects that return the blighted homes back to their former glory – even if they’re used a little differently than they once were. Houses that are featured on this 56th year of the Historic Druid Hills Home & Garden Tour showcase what we call “true Druid Hills stewardship”.

Protected by Preservation

Thankfully, in 1966 the National Historic Preservation Act was passed by Congress. Starting in 1975 with the “Ponce de Leon Parks and Parkway” listing, almost all of Druid Hills is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. From that jumping-off point, the City of Atlanta instituted historic preservation protection for the Druid Hills Landmark District in 1989. DeKalb County created the protected Druid Hills Local Historic District in 1994. Our preservation guidelines foster Druid Hills’ continued eclectic but cohesive appeal and respect the important role of green spaces.

Come see for yourself why people are drawn to Olmsted’s Druid Hills. The Tour runs Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28. Learn more at druidhillstour.org .

After the spirited Olmsted 200 Tennis Tournament, which was hosted at Druid Hills Golf Club on Monday, friends and neighbors got the chance to get spiffed up in their finest for the beautiful Olmsted 200th Birthday Gala at Callanwolde on Tuesday! We celebrated more than just Olmsted's birthday - we celebrated having the chance to be together at a special event, once again.

HOSTING YOUR HOME ON THE TOUR

We are currently accepting applicants for the 2025 Historic Druid Hills Home & Garden Tour. Reach out via the tabs below if you are interested in having your property featured!

What kind of homes qualify to be on the Tour?

While it is not a requirement, our tour-goers love seeing homes that have interesting architectural details or history behind them. Druid Hills is a neighborhood packed with history!

We consider homes that are "Tour Ready", which means they are clean and ready to be seen by the public. Many families host after a major renovation or after making design updates. You choose what is seen on the tour - while we prefer to showcase the entire house, it is not uncommon for a few rooms or even a floor to be closed off from the public. Most homes showcase part of their exterior grounds, but some do not.

Featured gardens (where the home is not open to the public for touring) should be "Tour Ready" as well. The landscaping should be established, well cared for, and paths/lawns maintained so it's safe and easy for tour-goers to explore.

Location may play a role in home selection. While its not always possible, we prefer when our homes are relatively nearby one another making it easier for tour-goers to visit each home.

What responsibilities would I have as a host?

You will want your home to look its best when visitors arrive, but we will handle everything else. It's almost like having a real estate showing - you don't even need to be at home!

Our committee will need to take interior and exterior photos prior to the Tour for publicity purposes. We will also need to meet with you to learn more about your home's history, features of interest, etc. This information will be used to help create the docent notes and will also be used for descriptions on social media and in the Tour booklet that each visitor will receive. We will also meet with you to establish "house rules" for our volunteers and patrons to follow during the Tour.

What perks will we receive as a host?

You will be invited to attend all Tour-related events, including the special Druid Hills Gala that will be held at Callanwolde prior to the Tour.

Our hosts also receive free tickets to the Tour and other special gifts as our way of thanking you for participating!

Have questions?

Our Tour chair would love to talk to you about hosting. If you'd like to, we can also connect you with prior host(s) if you want to know more from a homeowner's perspective.

New York Rangers star Chris Kreider slaps a shot.

The New York Rangers pulled it off.

After going up 3-0 on the Carolina Hurricanes, Jack Drury, Jake Guentzel and the ‘Canes roared back with two consecutive wins in Games 4 and 5.

Things looked shaky for Peter LaViolette and the Broadway Blueshirts as they headed to Carolina for Game 6.

Down 3-1 going into the third period, the Rangers stepped up and scored four goals — three coming from veteran Chris Kreider — to secure the win and a trip to the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals.

“He took over the game,” Rangers captain Jacob Trouba said, referring to Kreider’s heroics. “A lot of guys in here call him ‘the Horse,’ and that’s what he is, and he took off in that period and took it over.”

Next up, the Rangers will play the winner of the Boston Bruins-Florida Panthers matchup. The Panthers hold a 3-2 advantage in the series heading into Game 6 on Friday night in Boston.

However, if you want to get tickets way in advance for all hypothetical Eastern Conference home games at Madison Square Garden , they can be scooped up as soon as today.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on tickets for any game in the upcoming series was $387 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Other Rangers home games have tickets starting in the $423 to $640 range before fees.

For more information, we’ve got everything you need to know and more about the NY Rangers’ Eastern Conference Finals below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

About the Rangers-Hurricanes series

As noted above, Kreider came through in a big way for the Rangers to get them to the Eastern Conference Finals.

However, there’s so much more to the series than that.

For more about the raucous fans, the Blueshirts becoming the first team to advance to a Conference Final after winning the Presidents Trophy in nine years and Igor Shesterkin’s masterful third period stop, you can find all NY Rangers coverage on the New York Post .

How to watch the Rangers on TV

Fans hoping to catch the Rangers from the comfort of their own home are in luck.

All games will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, TNT, and TBS — just make sure to check your local listings before tuning in. You can watch all of these channels and more with a  DirecTV Stream  subscription, which comes with a five-day free trial for new subscribers.

Huge concerts at MSG in 2024

While the Rangers will be making the most of MSG these next few weeks, here are just five of the biggest acts that will be taking center stage at the historic venue once their season series wraps up.

•  Pearl Jam

•  Tyler Childers

•  Hans Zimmer

•  The Doobie Brothers
