How to Travel from Dubai to Abu Dhabi by Bus

Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates ( UAE ). It lies just west of the emirate of Dubai.

Abu Dhabi (the capital city of the emirate of Abu Dhabi) and Dubai (the capital city of the emirate of Dubai) are connected by the E11 road (Dubai – Abu Dhabi Highway).

The road is straight and runs roughly parallel to the coastline.

RTA Bus Services

There are two bus services from Dubai to Abu Dhabi; the E100 service and the E101 service. Both are operated by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

• E100 Bus Service: Al Ghubaiba Bus Station to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station
• E101 Bus Service: Ibn Battuta Bus Station to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station

The E100 bus service departs from Al Ghubaiba Bus Station . Al Ghubaiba Bus Station is situated in the Bur Dubai area of the city, near the Dubai Creek. This service is convenient for those travelling from areas in ‘Old Dubai’ ( Bur Dubai , Deira , etc.).

The E101 bus service leaves from Ibn Battuta Bus Station (adjacent to the Ibn Battuta Mall ). Ibn Battuta Bus Station is convenient for those travelling from areas in ‘New Dubai’ (Jebel Ali, Jumeirah Lakes Towers , Dubai Marina , Al Barsha , Palm Jumeirah , etc.).

Both routes to go Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station.

Al Ghubaiba Bus Station and Ibn Battuta Bus Station can easily be reached by travelling on the Dubai Metro .

Al Ghubaiba Bus Station is near Al Ghubaiba Metro Station ( Green Line of the Dubai Metro ).

Ibn Battuta Bus Station is next to Ibn Battuta Metro Station ( Red Line of the Dubai Metro ).

The bus services between Dubai and Abu Dhabi were suspended in 2020 due to the pandemic. The E101 service resumed in September 2021 and the E100 service resumed in May 2022.

The resumption of these services has been a relief for commuters who had to rely on other means of transport, such as private cars or taxis, to travel between the two emirates. The intercity bus routes offer a convenient and the cheapest option for those who need to travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi on a regular basis.

RTA Bus Timings

Bus timings from Dubai to Abu Dhabi are frequent. Services run from early morning to the early hours. In 2022 bus timetables are:

E100 Bus Timings – Al Ghubaiba Bus Station, Dubai to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station

Timings for the E100 bus service to Abu Dhabi are shown in the table below.

The E100 bus departs every 20 minutes or so.

The distance from Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Dubai to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station is around 150 km (93 miles). The journey takes around 2 hours.

E101 Bus Timings – Ibn Battuta Bus Station, Dubai to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station

Timings for the E101 bus route to Abu Dhabi are shown in the table below.

The E101 bus leaves every 20 minutes or so.

The distance from Ibn Battuta Bus Station in Dubai to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station is approximately 115 km (71 miles). The travel time is around 1.5 hours.

Timings for all services may vary during Ramadan and on public holidays .

Travelling by RTA bus is the cheapest way to travel from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. A one-way ticket costs just 25 AED in 2022 (£ 5.34 , € 6.27 , $ 6.81 ).

The ticket price is the same for all bus services from Dubai to Abu Dhabi (E100 and E101 ).

You can get on the bus to Abu Dhabi using a NOL card (contactless public transport payment card). NOL cards can be purchased and topped up at many locations ( Dubai Metro stations, bus stations , etc.).

It is not possible to book tickets in advance for buses between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. However, this is not generally a problem as buses are frequent and queues are usually not too long.  As a result, passengers typically have no difficulty securing a seat on the bus they wish to take.

The lack of advanced booking options may even be seen as a positive, as it allows passengers to be more flexible with their travel plans.

Passengers should not encounter any major difficulties when travelling from Dubai to Abu Dhabi by bus. The worst that can happen is that you might have to wait for 20 minutes or so for the next bus. So overall, it’s not an issue. Just plan your trip accordingly and factor in a bit of extra time in case there’s a queue.

Other Transport Options – Dubai to Abu Dhabi

Please note there are no commercial flights between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The Dubai Metro only runs as far as UAE Exchange Metro Station . This is only 20 km from the Dubai/Abu Dhabi border but around 100 km from Abu Dhabi city.

Aside from the RTA buses, options for travelling to Abu Dhabi include:

Taxis from Dubai to Abu Dhabi are offered by both Uber and Careem. The metered taxi fare will be considerably higher than the RTA public bus.

For those visitors wishing to travel from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, renting a car is an option. Although it is more expensive, it offers flexibility that public transport does not.

Driving in an unfamiliar city can be daunting for those who are inexperienced. There are large highways and heavy traffic. If you do decide to hire a car, be sure to familiarise yourself with the local traffic laws, speed limits, and conditions before hitting the road.

Car rentals are readily available throughout Dubai.

Emirates passengers can fly into Dubai International Airport (DXB) and take a free shuttle bus to Abu Dhabi.

Details of the shuttle bus service can be found on the Emirates website here . Prior booking is required. When booking your airline ticket on the Emirates website, please ensure to enter Abu Dhabi as the final destination to obtain the transfer ticket.

There are limited shuttle bus services and the bus journey is taken on the first bus after the flight lands.

Etihad also operates a coach service between Abu Dhabi International Airport and Dubai. Details can be found on the Etihad website here .

Organised Tours

If you are travelling from Dubai to Abu Dhabi to visit one of the major tourist attractions (Louvre, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, etc.) it may be more convenient to book an organised tour from Dubai.

Organised tours generally include transport, a professional guide, and entrance tickets.

Free Shuttle Bus to Yas Island (Yas Waterworld, Ferrari World)

Those not wishing to book an organised tour to Yas Waterworld or Ferrari World can purchase entrance tickets themselves and take advantage of free shuttle buses from Dubai to Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Buses depart from various locations in Dubai ( Mall of the Emirates , Palm Jumeirah , Dubai Mall , City Centre Deira , Jumeirah Beach Residence , Burjuman , Dubai Marina Mall etc.) and go directly to Yas Island.

Buses leave in the morning and return in the evening. Schedules are limited and passengers need to present an e-ticket to the driver. Services also operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

From Dubai to Abu Dhabi: 5 Best Ways to Get There

Although most people get about by car in the United Arab Emirates, there are other transport options available.

One thing to look forward to in the future is that the UAE are currently constructing a 1,200-kilometer-long railway network that will stretch across the entire country and which will completely change public transport options between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Although the Dubai to Abu Dhabi segment of EtihadRail's network has been completed, there has been no official word on if it will open before the entire network is finished.

Until then, whether you want to hire a car and hit the road, take a tour or use the bus, there are plenty of current options for all styles of travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It's only 140 kilometers between the two cities , so it makes sense to add a trip to Abu Dhabi into all but the shortest Dubai stay.

1. From Dubai to Abu Dhabi by Car

Hiring a car for a trip between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and your wider vacation within the UAE, is a popular transport choice.

Driving within Dubai can be daunting for the uninitiated. Once you're outside of the city limits, though, on the well-maintained multilane highways, driving in the UAE is quite straightforward. Just drive defensively and stay in the far-right lane to steer clear of the speeding and overtaking game of your fellow drivers.

Car hire firms are plentiful in Dubai. You'll find all the main international players at the airports, and many firms have handy office counters within hotels.

The main routes leading out of the city have toll fees (4 AED). Your hire car will be fitted with a "salik" sticker tag that pays the toll fee automatically. Any tolls you clock up are paid when you return the car to the hire agency.

Download the Smart Roads app from the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) onto your phone before heading out to help with navigating your way out of the city. It tends to be slightly better than Google Maps.

From central Dubai, the most straightforward route follows Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street (E11 Highway), south out of the center, and stays on that same road for the entire journey to Abu Dhabi. On the edge of Abu Dhabi city, just before Abu Dhabi Airport, turn west onto the E10 Highway (also known as Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street), which heads straight into the central city.

If you're visiting Abu Dhabi's sights on a day trip from Dubai, head to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque first, before driving farther west into the downtown area.

2. From Dubai to Abu Dhabi by Group Tour

If you're looking for a fully organized and well-priced trip to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, with both transport and a tour of Abu Dhabi's main tourist attractions included, then a group day tour can be a good option.

Most group day tours include hotel pickup and drop-off in Dubai , all your transport for the day (in a comfortable, air-conditioned coach), and a professional guide.

The major stops once you're in Abu Dhabi are usually at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Heritage Village, with short photo stops at other city tourist attractions such as the Emirates Palace Hotel and Yas Island's Formula One Circuit.

Note that if you're heading to Abu Dhabi to specifically visit and spend time at attractions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Mangrove National Park, or the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, these group tours aren't for you.

The full-day tour of Abu Dhabi from Dubai does what it says on the tin, offering a whirlwind tour of Abu Dhabi with plenty of photo stops outside major attractions (including outside the Louvre, on Yas Island, and at the Emirates Palace Hotel) and visits to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Heritage Village.

Pickup and drop-off from Dubai hotels is included if you're not a solo traveler (solo travelers report to a designated central pickup address in Dubai) and transport is in a comfortable air-conditioned minibus or coach bus, depending on the tour numbers booked for that day. Lunch is not included in the tour cost, but there is a designated lunch stop at Abu Dhabi's Marina Mall for tour passengers to have lunch.

3. From Dubai to Abu Dhabi by Bus

Traveling by bus from Dubai and Abu Dhabi is the cheapest transport option between the two cities. Services are reliable, frequent and efficient. Buses on this route are all operated by the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority (RTA). They're all air-conditioned but otherwise, no-frills .

RTA's E100 bus departs from Dubai's Al Ghubaiba Bus Station for Abu Dhabi's Al Wahda Bus Station, every 15 to 20 minutes. The journey takes around two hours.

The bus fare is paid using a Nol card (Dubai's rechargeable public transport card). The fare is simply deducted from your card when you touch it on the machine at the bus entrance.

You can buy Nol cards with pre-loaded credit, and recharge them, at vending machines at Al Ghubaiba Bus Station.

Al Ghubaiba Bus Station is centrally located, near Dubai Creek and the Al Fahidi District. Al Ghubaiba Metro Stop is a short walk from the bus station.

Al Wahda Bus Station is in central Abu Dhabi. There are plenty of taxis outside ready to whisk you to your destination in Abu Dhabi.

Even in the height of summer, bring something to throw over your shoulders. The air-conditioning is often freezing.

4. From Dubai to Abu Dhabi by Private Tour

The most relaxed, no-stress option combining return transport from Dubai to Abu Dhabi with touring the sights is to book a private tour.

Any of Dubai's multitude of travel agencies can organize a fully customized day-long Abu Dhabi trip for you with either guide and driver or driver only.

The itinerary will completely depend on your own interests (with time limits obviously), so whether you want to include a visit to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, or book a kayaking tour of Mangroves National Park is up to you.

The transport itself will be door-to-door and will be in a comfortable car or minibus, depending on your group size.

For an organized private tour itinerary, though, the Abu Dhabi Private City Tour includes pickup from any hotel in Dubai, or from Dubai airport, and a five-hour trip around the city with tours of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Heritage Village, Emirates Palace, and a produce market along with a short stop at Marina Mall and photo stops at Ferrari World and Qasr Al Watan. The stops on the itinerary can be customized and changed to suit your personal interests.

5. From Dubai to Abu Dhabi by Taxi

Taking a private taxi from Dubai to Abu Dhabi instead of self-driving isn't a cheap option but it does mean you don't have to cope with the traffic yourself, and you benefit from door-to-door service.

For a more budget taxi alternative, there are share-taxi services available at Al Ghubaiba Bus Station. The journey time is shorter than taking the bus; they depart when the car is full, and you and the other passengers share the total fare. They arrive in Abu Dhabi at Al Wahda Bus Station.

Private Dubai taxis can be booked by your hotel or hailed off the street. You can also use one of the ride-sharing apps such as Uber for a Dubai to Abu Dhabi journey.

There are neither train services nor direct flights from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. Fortunately, there are plenty of options available to you. With the development of public transportation, car rentals, taxis, and even helicopters, there is a transportation option for every budget.

Riding the Airline Shuttle

• You can view running times and reserve your seat on the Etihad shuttle by visiting etihad.com/en-ae/plan-and-book/book-etihad-express/.
• Emirates does not offer an online booking method, but you can check out what times the coaches run at https://www.emirates.com/english/before-you-fly/dubai-international-airport/shuttle-service-dubai/ .

• Store your luggage in the compartment under the shuttle for a comfortable ride, but keep personal and financial items such as passports and credit cards with you at all times.

Taking the Public Bus

• If you are in Bur Dubai, Satwa, or Karama, take the E100 bus from the Al Ghubaiba Bus Station to the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station.
• If you are in Marina, JLT, or the JBR area, take the E101 bus from the Ibn Battuta Metro Station.

• An RTA Nol card is a smart card that basically functions as an electronic bus pass. You can purchase one of the many ticket offices, RTA customer services centers, and even ticket vending machines.

• Keep in mind when you are traveling that buses only run from 6am-11pm. Have an alternate method of transportation or book a room if you decide to stay in Abu Dhabi past 11pm.

• Since you will most likely be able to store your bag directly overhead, there is no need to keep personal or financial items on your person. They should be safe in your bag until it’s time to exit the bus and compartments are opened.

• The bus ride is a great time to catch up on emails, read a book, or listen to your favorite playlist.

Hiring a Taxi

• A one-way trip to Abu Dhabi via taxi will cost you around 250AED (about 68 USD). However, be prepared to pay more than that in case of unexpected delays on the highway.

• If you have a driver who is willing to engage in conversation, ask about places to go in Abu Dhabi. They can most likely tell you about local hangouts and fun activities to do during your trip.

Renting a Car

• The most common route is to take the Sheikh Zayed Road, or Highway E 11. Depending on where you enter the highway, it has at least one toll. Tolls typically cost 4 AED.

Flying by Helicopter

• Flying to Abu Dhabi in a helicopter is the most costly option for transportation. For 5 people, it will cost you around 14,900 AED, which is about 4,056 USD.

Getting From Dubai to Abu Dhabi; The Easiest Ways in 2024

Want to visit several cities in the UAE but not sure how to get around?

The two most popular cities for visitors are Dubai and Abu Dhabi – but is it possible to visit both in one trip to the UAE? Is it easy to get from Abu Dhabi to Dubai? What if you fly into one city and out of the other or want a car rental to road trip elsewhere in the UAE?

How Far is Dubai from Abu Dhabi

The distance between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is approximately 160 kilometres, but it depends on where you are taking your measurements from!

Both cities sprawl without a definitive city centre or end.  From the outer areas of both cities, the journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi is about 1 hour, or using public transport it can take up to 3 hours.

How To Get From Dubai to Abu Dhabi (and Vice Versa!)

There is no direct commercial flight connection between the two cities and no train line at present (though we’ll discuss this more below!). The only option currently is by road, which still leaves you quite a few options:

Public Transport: Intercity Bus from Dubai to Abu Dhabi

Free airline buses from dubai to abu dhabi, free airline buses from abu dhabi to dubai, paid airport transfers dubai to auh, taxies and hired drivers between dubai and abu dhabi, join a tour group between dubai and abu dhabi, self-drive – hire a car in the uae, uae trains – etihad rail and the hyperloop, how to get from dubai to other cities in the uae.

The Intercity Bus  is the cheapest way to connect between the two cities. It leaves Dubai from two locations:

• Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Bur Dubai (Route 100) to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station , approx. 120 minutes
• Ibn Battuta Mall (Route 101) to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station approx. 90 minutes and Route 102 to Mussafah Shabiya Bus Station , approx. 1 hour 55 minutes.

All routes on the Intercity service cost 25 AED one way. You can pay cash at the counter or use your Dubai NOL card, which also works on Dubai buses and the Metro (but NOT on Abu Dhabi public transport. Abu Dhabi uses Hafilat bus cards).

Abu Dhabi to Dubai Bus

The Intercity Bus also runs in reverse from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station (next to Al Wadha Mall) back to Al Ghubaiba or Ibn Battuta Mall and Mussafah Shabiya to Ibn Battuta.

Connecting to Dubai International Airport DXB

From Al Ghubaiba Bus Station, you can connect to DXB by:

• Taking bus 33 or 42 to Terminal 1
• Taking bus 31 to Terminal 2
• Take the Metro green line to Burjuman, switch to the red line for Terminal 3
• Catching a short taxi – approx 30 AED

Connecting to Zayed International Airport AUH

From Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station to the new Abu Dhabi international airport, AUH:

• Take bus 2A from outside the station to Terminal A, leaves every 40 minutes 4 AED
• Take a taxi – approx 30 minutes and cost 50AED

Looking to visit the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi from Dubai?

It is possible to catch public transport, though not all that straightforward if you are travelling with kids.  You would need to catch the Intercity bus as described above, then a local bus to the Grand Mosque; there are several routes, and the most direct is Route 32 , which costs 2 AED per person.

If you are planning to visit, say, the Louvre or Emirates Palace on an Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai, note none of these popular Abu Dhabi sites are anywhere near each other! It is easy enough to navigate your way around town by taxi, but the costs will add up. 

It makes hiring a car from Dubai , a private driver or joining a tour start to make sense if you’re travelling in a group and want to make multiple stops.

Both the major airlines in the UAE – Etihad and Emirates – offer FREE services connecting the two cities. However, the bus stations are not in the most convenient of locations;  it’s not an airport-to-airport transfer!

Be aware of this if you have flights from DXB (Emirates) and AUH (Etihad); careful planning is needed, and pay attention to the airport codes we’re about to share!!!

If you’re flying Emirates but ultimately want to end in Abu Dhabi , your ticket can be issued to include the free transit bus through to your destination. The Emirates bus stop in Abu Dhabi is at their Khalidiya office on the Corniche (NB, this is nowhere near AUH airport!)

When you book your airline ticket, book the final location as ZVJ (not DXB) to guarantee your seat on the free bus. You must transfer immediately from DXB after your flight lands – no Dubai sightseeing on the way!

If you have an onward connection to AUH, the taxi back to the airport is about 80 AED extra.  We’re not aware of any baggage service at the bus stop (it is really just a car park). If you want to do Abu Dhabi sightseeing before your next flight, your bags will need to come with you or return to AUH first to store your bags.

You can organise a baggage transfer with Emirates to AUH for 200 AED, but by this point, you may as well have paid for a metered taxi door-to-door.

Flying Etihad

If you have an Etihad flight but you are leaving from Dubai, you can start your journey at the Etihad Travel Mall (Downtown Dubai).  The code you need to book your flight is XNB (instead of AUH).

Note that for business or First-class passengers on either airline, a complimentary private chauffeur is provided; just remember to confirm your booking at least 48 hours in advance to use this service.

So let’s switch it around, if you’re starting in Abu Dhabi but must depart from Dubai.

If you are flying with Emirates,  you can catch the  complimentary bus service  from outside their Khalidiya office to Dubai International Airport (DXB).

You can only catch the bus on the day of travel – book your departure from ZVJ.

If you have arrived at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) with Etihad Economy and want to connect straight to Dubai, you can arrange a seat on the  Etihad Coach ,  departing from AUH and taking you to the Etihad Travel Mall (Downtown Dubai) – use airport code XNB when booking. 

If you have an onward flight from DXB, expect a taxi from Etihad Travel Mall to DXB to cost 40 AED.

The journey in either direction from Dubai to Abu Dhabi takes about 1 hour and 25 minutes, but for arrivals, you will likely be booked on a service at least 1 hour after your landing time. For departures, they will suggest catching the service listed at least 4 hours before your departure.

If you are flying with any other airline, sadly, these complimentary bus services are not available to you.

A new paid transport option has emerged by way of the AUH Expres s bus service . Passengers flying out of AUH no longer need to take a local bus into Al Wadha before connecting to an intercity bus to the airport.

Instead, passengers can now buy a bus ticket from Ibn Battuta Bus Statio n to the new Zayed International Airport for 35 AED ( or book it online in advance ) and board the comfortable air-conditioned AUH express coach.

The AUH express goes directly to AUH from Ibn Battuta Station in Dubai and only takes a little over 1 hour.

Coming the other direction, you can get an AUH Express ticket from inside Zayed International Airport or pre-purchase here and take the coach service to Ibn Battuta. From there, passengers can purchase a Nol and continue their journey onward using the Metro.

Just be mindful, that many flights land in the middle of the night in AUH; the AUH Express is running overnight, but the Metro may be closed at this time of night, you may need to complete your journey by taxi.

The most straightforward way to transit between the two cities is to hail a metered taxi.  They should take you door to door, but sometimes taxis will insist on pulling over at the first petrol station over the border to swap passengers to the taxi service for that Emirate. (It is not clear if there is a law that requires this or simply the taxi doesn’t want to be that far out of his zone; A Dubai taxi cannot pick up a new fare in Abu Dhabi and vice versa.)

From DXB to downtown Abu Dhabi, expect a fair between 275 – 350 AED.

If you hire a private driver, the same trip is likely to cost you 350 – 500AED, depending on the size of the vehicle booked.  The advantage is you can pre-book your exact time, and you may be able to add extras like car seats to your orders.

If you would like to see the highlights of each city on a day trip, there are plenty of options for travelling in both directions.  Always check out reviews and see how long the tour will last. 

As a family, be aware that quoted prices will be per seat on the bus or minivan; if you have a larger group, a private tour group could work out more economical.

If you are a confident driver, self-driving is the easiest way to get around in the UAE, offering you the most flexibility travelling between the two cities.

Most visitors self-driving will need to hire a car.  Even if you have friends living in the UAE, you need to have a UAE driver’s license to be covered by the vehicle’s insurance.  We recommend it is easier and safer for visitors to hire where overseas licenses are accepted on a tourist visa.

Things to be mindful of when hiring a car in the UAE

• The UAE drives on the right, with the steering wheel on the left.
• Almost all cars have automatic transmissions.
• The traffic goes FAST! It can be a little hectic with 6-lane freeways to one-way systems.
• Car seats are required by law up to 4 years old (albeit enforcement of this law is not prevalent). Better safe than sorry BYO car seats, or you can hire from the car rental company.
• Hiring a car one-way between the two cities is likely to incur an extra one-way hire fee.
• The speed limit signs differ between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Once you’re on the freeway, you can travel at 140 km/hr. Dubai signposts this as 120 km/hr but includes a 20km/hr “buffer” before you’re fined. In Abu Dhabi, the posted limit is now the actual limit – i.e. max 140 km/hr on the freeway.
• There are tolls in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai; Your rental company will have the car appropriately registered but will on-charge any toll fees to you as the driver.

Could you imagine an ultra-fast shuttle service could cut the transit time between the two cities to a mere 15 minutes? A Hyperloop service between Dubai and Abu Dhabi has long been touted but has admittedly grown quiet in the last few years.

The more imminent reality is that a standard high-speed train service will commence between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the near future. Etihad Rail will eventually connect all of the Emirates with freight and passenger services, as well as connect to neighbouring countries Oman and Saudi Arabia.

There’s no date given at this stage for the launch of the passenger service between Dubai and Abu Dhabi but it will certainly be a welcome transportation link between the two cities helping to cut down traffic and time.

A private hire car is the easiest way to get beyond the big cities and see the other Emirates as it allows you the flexibility to travel door to door.  If you are not a confident driver, however, or you prefer someone else to take the driving while you’re on holiday, then it’s perfectly understandable.

Follow this Dubai and Abu Dhabi itinerary to spend an amazing week in the UAE. Climb to the top of Burj Khalifa, spend a day in Dubai Mall one of the largest shopping centres in the world, experience the Arabian desert and more. It’s early 2020 and my travel plans for the new year are in full swing! I have already completed a trip to Slovenia which consisted of a road trip in the Julian Alps and a short solo wandering in Ljubljana , and I’m getting ready for my next big trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with my mum and my brother. Fortunately, our trip wasn’t affected by coronavirus as it was still only an epidemic when we started our trip (but declared a pandemic half-way through) and the number of cases in the UAE was very low compared to other countries.

How to get to Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

Dubai has one of the largest international airports (airport code: DXB) in the world, connecting the UAE with the rest of the world. Hence, it is very easy to find flights to Dubai. Emirates is the official air carrier of Dubai and offers the most flights out of the city.

Similarly, Abu Dhabi also has an international airport (airport code: AUH) with many connections around the world. Etihad Airways is the official air carrier of Abu Dhabi, providing the most flights.

Choose the airport that has the most convenient flights for you, or even better arrive at one airport and leave from the other. The itinerary below assumes that the arrival and departure airport is the one in Dubai (DXB).

Visa requirements for entering the UAE

Citizens of many countries are not required to have a visa to enter Dubai for tourism. A 30/90-day tourist visa will be issued for free upon arrival to the country depending on where you are from. For example, Canadian and US citizens get the 30-day visa, while UK and EU citizens get a 90-day visa. The only thing required for those citizens is to have a valid passport for at least 6 months from the day entering the UEA.

How to get to Dubai city centre from the airport?

To leave the airport you can take the metro (Green line) from Dubai Airport Free Zone station. If your flight arrives late at night or in the early hours of the morning, when the metro is closed, you may prefer to get a taxi from the taxi rank area. Alternatively, you can check with your accommodation if they offer an airport shuttle.

How to get to Abu Dhabi city centre from the airport?

The easiest way to get to your final destination in Abu Dhabi is to take a taxi. A few buses also service the airport and provide connections for different locations around the city.

How to get from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and vice versa?

There are a few ways you can move between the two cities. The cheapest one is to take the bus from Al Ghubaiba bus station in Dubai to Abu Dhabi Central bus station. The journey lasts about 2 hours, but you should also take into account the time to get to and from the bus stations.

The quickest way is to take a taxi or book a private transfer (might be more expensive) from one city to another. You can take a regular street taxi from either city and request a drop off address in the other city. There is no difference in the fare, but I would suggest mentioning to the driver before departing that you want to go outside the city. Also, keep directions of your final destination in the other city, as the driver may not be familiar with the roads there.

The taxi ride fare from Dubai to Abu Dhabi or vice versa can vary from AED250 to AED300, depending on your exact departure and arrival points. The journey should last about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

How to move around?

Dubai has an extensive public transport system with two metro lines, a tram route, a few water-bus routes, a monorail and many buses.

The most convenient mean of public transport is the metro which is fairly inexpensive and an efficient way of covering long distances.

Anything not covered by the metro may be easier (and sometimes cheaper) to reach by taxi or an Uber. Usually, there is a taxi rank outside popular metro stations, landmarks and malls, but you can just flag down available taxis or call one. Taxis in Dubai can take you anywhere in the UAE, although do not expect them to be familiar with addresses outside Dubai.

To pay for public transport you need to get a nol card . A nol card is a top-up card that you can use to pay for your trips. Note that you need to note the zone you want to cover as well as how many journeys you need to purchase. At the time of visiting, many stations had both machines and human staff to purchase and top up your card from.

The RTA (Road and Transport Authority) website has a lot of information about public transport in Dubai and nol cards as well as taxis and other means of transport.

Public transport in Abu Dhabi consists mostly of buses. However, moving around in Abu Dhabi using public transport isn’t as straightforward as Dubai. One simple reason is that the bus timetables and routes are not on Google Maps. Of course, you can argue that you can find this information on other websites, but after a quick search online, the results show that buses are not catered for tourists but for locals.

Indeed, most visitors to Abu Dhabi use taxis to move around, as they are quick and cheap (even cheaper than Dubai). You can find a taxi rank in all the main landmarks, and if this is not the case you can use an Uber. This is what we did as well, as you can see in the Abu Dhabi section below.

When to visit?

The best time to visit the UAE is during winter, early spring and late autumn as this itinerary includes some daytime outdoor activities which can be unbearable during the summer heat. Keep in mind that if you choose to visit during the summer months, then you may be able to enjoy some of the low-season promotions available. If you are keen on shopping, then you may want to visit during the shopping festival in January.

We followed this itinerary in early March and we had lovely weather for most days. A few times we experienced hazy mornings, but other than that the weather was fine, without any rain. Just remember to put some suncream when being outside.

What to wear in Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

People living in the UAE follow a modest dress code when getting out in public. Men usually are fine with normal clothes, but women should be a little more considerate. Short skirts, tank tops and other similar items are not the best choices of clothes in the UEA.

When going to the beach, usual beach clothing is fine, but remember to cover up when leaving and visiting shops and restaurants.

If you are having dinner or drinks at one of the high-end resorts, then you may need to dress up more formally. Note that all the places mentioned in the itinerary below accept casual clothing.

On the other hand, if you are visiting a mosque, the rules are completely different and you will have to be covered from head to toe. Remember to pack a scarf to put around your head, before entering a religious place.

Additionally, I suggest you have a light cardigan with you for cold evenings and cold (from the air-conditioning) closed spaces.

Overall, you may notice that Dubai is more tolerative in terms of western standard clothing compared to the other emirates. Despite that, it is better to respect the culture of a place and try to fit in.

Where to stay?

In Dubai, we stayed in two hotels, one during our Dubai leg of the trip and one during our last night after returning from Abu Dhabi. Our main requirements for choosing a hotel were price, location (close to a metro station and not too far from the places we would visit) and overall hotel rating. In the case of our last night’s stay, we were looking for something close to the airport that also provided a shuttle.

Novotel Bur Dubai [AD] was a nice hotel in Dubai Healthcare City, a few minutes walk to a metro station and WAFI city. The rooms were clean and modern and the staff very friendly. The hotel had a restaurant and a rooftop bar and pool.

Hampton by Hilton Dubai Airport [AD] was a cheap hotel and relatively close to the airport. Our room was decent, as it was its restaurant. The biggest advantage of the hotel was the free shuttle to the airport, but if the timetable is not convenient for you, then a taxi ride shouldn’t cost much.

In Abu Dhabi, we originally wanted to stay in Yas Island which is closer to the activities we planned for most days. However, after a short research, we found out that hotels in the centre of Abu Dhabi were cheaper than those in Yas Island. So we decided to choose a more luxurious hotel, with an ok price tag and commute to there.

Marriot Hotel Downtown Abu Dhabi [AD] was one of the best hotels we ever stayed. We had a huge room (including an extremely large bathroom), and floor to ceiling windows. The hotel had a rooftop pool and restaurant with great food! Opposite the hotel, you can find the Al Wadha Mall with many shops and restaurants (although not as glamourous as the malls in Dubai). Overall, the hotel was of great value with excellent service. There was even a small taxi rank outside the hotel so we never had to wait for a cab to start our day.

Other important information

The currency in the UAE is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED, DH or Dhs). 1 dirham is made up of 100 fills. 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 dirhams are the most frequently used banknotes but banknotes for 20, 200 and 1000 dirhams can also be used. In terms of coins, expect to frequently find ones for 25 and 50 fills and for 1 dirham. 5 and 10 fills are also available but not as frequently used.

The official language of the UAE is Arabic, but English is widely understood and spoken, especially in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Time Difference

The UAE follows the Gulf Standard Time which is 4 hours ahead of GMT/UTC (UTC+04:00). There, the clocks don’t change for daylight saving time.

Travel Insurance

I recommend you get worldwide travel insurance to cover for your UAE trip. Things can happen, it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you book your flight with certain credit cards, your trip may be already covered so check with your bank for that. Otherwise, check out Staysure’ travel insurance plans here [AD] .

Phone calls and mobile data

Roaming from the UAE can be quite expensive. For example, the roaming charges from my UK mobile phone provider were: £1.99/min to make calls, £1.49/min to receive calls, 49p to send a message and £14.99/MB for data. So, it is better if you purchase a local SIM card and use that one instead.

There are a few mobile phone providers that offer tourist SIM cards that also have stands in airport arrivals. In Dubai Airport Terminal 3, there were three providers: du, Etisalat and Virgin Mobile. We decided to go with Virgin as it offered the best value for money plans when considering mobile data. We paid AED 190 and the plan included 50 local minutes, 50 international minutes, some local texts and 10GB mobile data.

How we used our local SIM card?

We purchased only one SIM card for the three of us. We also brought with us an extra phone to insert the SIM card. This allowed us to use it as a Wi-Fi hotspot using the mobile data, in order not to drain the battery of our primary phones. We primarily used the mobile data when walking to get last-minute directions on Google Maps and be able to order an Uber.

In addition, as VOIP calls are blocked in the UEA and we couldn’t get our VPN to work, we used the SIM to make a few calls back home. We even made a few phone calls to local numbers to book our desert safari tour and we could use it to make restaurant reservations as well.

Note that many hotels, mall and attractions provide free Wi-Fi to their guests/visitors.

Day 0 – Arriving in Dubai

Take a full day to arrive in Dubai and settle into your accommodation. This will usually be required if you are flying from western Europe and take into account the time difference. Alternatively, choose a flight that arrives early in the morning of day 1, so you still have the day to go sightseeing.

Note: In the UAE, Friday is the day off for many people (just like Sundays in western countries). This means that some museums and mosques may have reduced opening hours or are not open at all to the public. At the same time, it means that tourist attractions may be busier than other days. So feel free to move the days around to fit with the exact dates of your visit. To help you plan your trip, our Day 0 was on a Friday.

Day 1 – Old and New Dubai

Day 1 is all about exploring the older part of Dubai, before delving into its more luxurious elements.

10:00 Dubai Museum

The Dubai Museum is situated in the Al Fahidi Fort which was built in 1787. Through the years the fort had different uses from defence to artillery to prison. In 1971, the Dubai Museum was established on the site to house the heritage and history of Dubai. Now, visitors to the museum will be greeted with a variety of exhibits showcasing the different types of activity in Dubai. There is a gradual transition from the past to the present form of Dubai as an ultra-modern city.

Note: The Dubai Museum is currently closed for refurbishment.

How to get there?

Take the metro to Al Fahidi metro station (Green line). After that it’s a twelve-minute walk onto Al Mussallah Rd/Al Satwa Rd and Al Fahidi Street to reach the museum.

12:00 Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

The Al Fahid Historical Neighbourhood is a traditional neighbourhood of the 19th and early 20th century Dubai. The buildings are built with traditional materials and are linked by alleys and public squares. Their strategic position alongside Dubai Creek gave them a high commercial value. What’s worth noticing is that the structures lack front windows and if they have, they are narrow and positioned higher up to value one’s privacy. Now, the buildings house different cultural projects such as art exhibits and specialised museums.

How to get there (from Dubai Museum)?

Follow the walking directions at the end of Day 1 activities.

13:00 Lunch

There are a lot of places to have lunch around Al Fahidi. We passed from many tea houses and cafes, many of which serve food as well, during our walk and we decided to try XVA Gallery Cafe . It has some light dishes, such as the halloumi wrap that my brother tried and refreshing drinks.

14:00 Textile and Bur Dubai Souks

Continue your walk to the Textile and Bur Dubai Souks, often referred to as the Old Dubai Souks. Get a first glimpse of how souks are, before crossing the Creek to an even larger set of souks.

14:30 Cross Dubai Creek

To cross Dubai Creek, you should take an Abra ride. Abras are traditional boats used for commuting between the two sides of the creek. Find the Abra Station that connects Bur Dubai with Deira (stop CR1 and CR5) and pay AED1 per person to cross. Note that you may need to walk through the Textile Souk to get to the correct station.

The Abra ride, although being super short was one of the highlights of our day, so remember to enjoy it!

15:00 Deira Old Souks

The Old Souk in Deira is a combination of alleys and small streets full of vendors. There are three main souks in the area: the Spice Souk, the Gold Souk and the Perfume Souk.

The Spice Souk is one of Dubai’s most colourful and aromatic places with a huge variety of herbs and spices. Unfortunately, due to the increase of supermarkets the spice souk is more of a tourist attraction rather than a place where locals regularly shop.

The gold souk is one of the biggest and oldest in Dubai and has one of the biggest selections of gold jewellery in a variety of carats. All of the items sold are authentic and bargains are possible. Before leaving don’t forget to pass by the largest ring in the world (certified by the Guinness World Records), weighting 64kg. It took 45 days to create this 21-carat ring and 55 workers were involved. Although it only cost $547 000 to make it back in 2000, now its price is estimated to be more than $3 million. It is made of about 5kg of diamonds and 615 Swarovski crystals among other precious stones.

Perfume Souk

The Perfume Souk is full of aromas representing Arabian life. Fragrances are sold at the souk in many forms (as a stick, powder, etc,). Certain places can even create a personalised aroma for you, matching your skin type and personality. Note that there is not a single building housing the different merchants. Instead, the Perfume Souk is a collection of street shops along Al Soor and Souk Deira Streets.

17:30 Dubai Frame

The Dubai Frame is a new structure connecting the old with the new Dubai. Inside there are three galleries: the future, present and past. The Dubai Frame is 150m high and 93m wide. Its design is inspired by the golden ratio of 1.618. The Sky Deck is located on the 48 th floor and offers panoramic views over the city. The elevator takes only 75 seconds to get you there. At the Bridge, there is a glass walkway and beneath it, you can see the dancing musical fountain.

How to get there (from Deira)?

Take the green line metro from Baniyas Square or Al Ras to Union station (Green line). There, change to metro line red and continue until ADCB metro station. Once there, I recommend you take a taxi or an Uber to Dubai frame instead of walking, as it is quite far.

19:00 WAFI Mall

WAFI Mall is the main complex of WAFI city which is styled like Ancient Egypt with pyramids and structures of pharaohs. At the mall, there are many shops, a few restaurants and entertainment activities. As it was our first evening, we decided to have something familiar for dinner and headed to Paul .

How to get there (from Dubai Frame)?

Take a taxi from the Dubai Frame to the WAFI Mall. Even though you can also get there by metro (use Healthcare City station), it will take longer and the price difference will be very small.

Walking Directions for Day 1

Note that the directions around the souks are not very accurate as Google Maps assumes only a single point for them, whereas they may span in multiple streets.

Day 2 – Modern Dubai

This day is dedicated to Dubai Mall. All of the attractions below are accessed through the mall, so firstly you need to make your way there (for direction see below). After that, use the screens in the mall to navigate around the building.

09:00 Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa is, at the moment, the tallest building in the world standing at 828m and having 160 storeys. Apart from this record, it is also the tallest free-standing structure in the world, has the highest number of storeys, has the highest occupied floor and the highest outdoor observation deck in the world. Other records involve its elevators heights and distance servicing.

The construction of the tower started in January 2004 and it was officially unveiled in January 2010. The interior is inspired by the Arabian and Middle Eastern art.

There are three observation decks (levels 124, 125 and 148), a couple of restaurants, a hotel and more. To visit the observation decks you need to purchase a ticket in advance, as only a few are available on the day. The most popular and affordable ticket is the “At the Top” which includes levels 124 and 125. If you also want to visit floor 148, you need to purchase the SKY ticket. This ticket is much more expensive, but also includes some refreshments and a personalised tour. Moreover, there are combination tickets with other activities around the mall.

Take the metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro station (Red line). Then walk the seven moving sidewalks to enter Dubai Mall and from there follow the signs to Burj Khalifa. The entrance to the observatory is located at the lower ground floor of Dubai Mall. Allow 30 minutes to walk from the metro station to the entrance of Burj Khalifa.

11:00 Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo

Next attraction of the day is the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, one of the largest aquariums in the world. There is a 10 million-litre tank that houses 33 000 aquatic animals and forms a 48-meter long tunnel. The tunnel is one of the most popular parts of the aquarium and part of it is visible from the public areas of the mall.

The aquarium offers many activities across different ticket types. The Explorer Experience Ticket is one of the most basic packages and includes the tunnel, the underwater zoo and a glass boat tour. Other ticket types include animal encounters and other activities.

Note that the entrance of the aquarium is on the ground floor of the Dubai Mall (by the tunnel), while to get to the underwater zoo, you need to get to the 2 nd floor. The path is clearly labelled.

13:00 Dubai Mall

Spend the rest of your day wandering around Dubai Mall, the biggest mall in the UAE with over 1200 shops. The mall covers an area of more than 1 million m 2 , which is equivalent to 200 football pitches.

Popular parts of the mall that you should visit are Fashion Avenue (ground floor), where all the luxury brands reside, the Dubai Dino Display (ground floor), and the Human Waterfall (ground floor).

For lunch, you can head to Le Gourmet (2nd floor) in Galleries Lafayette, which serves food from 11 international kitchens or try one of the many restaurants and cafes scattered around the mall. There is a large selection of them in the lower ground floor, where you can also find luxury desert boutiques such as Bateel that sells delicious gourmet dates. For some casual fast food options, check out the food section on the 2 nd floor.

The complex also houses a number of entertainment venues, such as the Dubai Ice-Rink (ground floor), Hysteria (2 nd floor), and a VR Park (2 nd floor).

18:00 Dubai Fountain

The Dubai Fountain is the tallest performing fountain in the world (you probably guessed it, right?) accompanied by music and light. To create the show, 22 000 gallons of water are jet from the fountain to a height of up 140m.

There are shows every half an hour starting at 6 pm until 11 pm. There are also two daytime performances at 1 pm and 1:30 pm. Each show lasts approximately five minutes.

There are different ways to enjoy the fountain show. You can dine at one of the restaurants overlooking the fountain (although it may be difficult to get a good seat); take an abra ride along the Burj Lake (payment required), walk along the Fountain boardwalk (payment required); get a standing spot in the courtyard or watch it from the balcony of the Apple Store (1 st floor). The last two options are free, but you should get there early to grab a good spot. My advice is to get there as long as one show finishes and wait for the next one.

Day 3 – Luxurious Dubai

Day 3 includes visits to at least two luxury resorts in Dubai. Although the public cannot visit many areas of the resort, you can still get a glimpse of the glamor they offer.

10:00 Madinat Jumeirah

Madinat Jumeirah is a luxury hotel complex close to the seaside of Dubai. The public places of the complex include a replica of a traditional souk, a few cafes and restaurants and a short boardwalk. To see most of the resort you can take a ride in one of the traditional abra boats. There are both private and group rides.

Madinat Jumeirah is also popular for its view of Burj Al Arab, one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. You can spot it from some of the public places of the resort and from the abra ride.

Take the metro to the Mall of the Emirates station (Red line), and from there take a taxi to Madinat Jumeirah.

13:00 Mall of the Emirates

Afterwards head to the Mall of the Emirates, another huge mall in Dubai. The most impressive section of the mall is the interior of the Fashion Dome which reminds of European railway stations.

Apart from many shops and restaurants, there you can find the largest indoor ski resort in the UEA, Ski Dubai . The ski resort has a slope, a snow park, a zip line and other activities while maintaining a constant temperature of -4 o C. There are different ticket types, depending on the activities you want to do and the duration of your visit. What about winter clothing and gear? Don’t worry they have a rental service for that.

For lunch, you can try one of the many restaurants next to the cinema. We tried Dean and Deluca and then we went for dessert at the Nutella Cafe. (Or we might first have been for dessert and then for lunch…). Despite the name, I found the cafe to be rather disappointing and the Magnum bar right across looked me promising!

How to get there (from Madinat Jumeirah)?

Take a taxi from Madinat Jumeirah to the Mall of the Emirates. There is a taxi rank at the entrance of the Madinat Jumeirah Souk.

16:00 Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah is one of the largest man-made islands in the world and is located next to the Dubai Marina. The island features many luxury hotels and restaurants.

One of the most popular resorts is Atlantis, The Palm which even has a water park and an aquarium. The resort has also some public areas with shops and restaurants, although they are rather touristy. Try to book dinner in one of the hotel’s restaurants to enter the other areas in the hotel.

Other activities on the island, include the Palm Jumeirah Boardwalk which circulates the island and Skydive Dubai . Alternatively, you can visit one of the other “leaves” of the Palm Island, such as the Pointe Hotel . From there you can watch the evening Palm Fountain show. The show starts daily at 6 pm, lasts about 3 minutes and repeats every half an hour.

How to get there (from the Mall of the Emirates)?

The island is connected using a driverless monorail which (at the moment) has four stops starting from the foot of the island up to the Atlantis, the Palm. Take it during daytime (to get to the island) to have a panoramic view of the leaves of the palm.

Take a taxi to the Monorail entry station, and then the monorail to the stop you want to get off. If you want to save money then you should take a taxi all the way to Palm Island (or take the metro red line to Dubai Internet City and then a taxi from there), as the monorail is quite expensive (AED20 one-way/AED30 return per person).

Day 4 – Outdoors Dubai

As you can guess from the title, most of the activities of this day are outdoors and allow you to enjoy Dubai’s (manmade) nature. Expect a sandy morning, a floral afternoon and an illuminated evening.

08:00 Morning Desert Tour

Complete your trip to Dubai with a morning desert tour. (Remember to confirm the starting time of your tour.) There are many companies that offer tours of the desert, each providing different activities. Some examples of activities you can encounter in desert tours are dune bashing, camel riding, sandboarding, and a break in a desert camp.

Each company has its own designated area in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. The reserve is dedicated to protecting the natural life and biodiversity of the Arabian Desert. Hence, while there you may spot mammals such as oryxes and gazelles that live there.

When we visited, we booked the morning safari tour with Arabian Adventurers. They use airconditioned 4×4 vehicles to get you in the desert. Each car fits up to 8 people, but if you want to have a more private experience you can choose a private car (although you can still mingle with other people at the stops of the tour).

Usually, there will be a pick up from your hotel (or a nearby location) and then drop off at the same place at the end of the tour.

14:00 Dubai Miracle Garden

The Dubai Miracle Garden is one of the largest natural flower gardens in the world. The park measures 72 000m 2 full of flower-made structures. Some of the most famous ones include an Emirates A380, a Micky Mouse, a Floral Castle, a Floral Clock and much more.

You can have lunch before visiting the gardens, or you can get something quick from there.

If you have time, you can then visit the Dubai Butterfly Garden, which is right next door. The Dubai Butterfly Garden has one of the world’s largest collections of butterflies. In total, there are 15 000 butterflies from 26 species.

Alternative: Visit IMG Worlds of Adventure, the largest indoor theme park in the world, with rides for all ages. If you choose this option, you will most probably not have time to visit the last attraction of the day.

The most straightforward way to get there is to take a taxi/Uber from your accommodation. There is the option to get there by public transport (metro to Mall of the Emirates and then bus No. 105) but it will take much longer.

Follow similar public transport directions for the IMG Worlds of Adventure, with the difference that after the Mall of the Emirates you should take a taxi as there is no bus that connects the two.

17:00 Dubai Garden Glow

The Dubai Garden Glow is a seasonal light festival with many illuminated exhibits. There are five different sections: Glow Park, Dino Park, Ice Park, Magic Park and Art Park. In Glow Park, all the light exhibits are handcrafted. The Dino Park showcases 120 animatronic Dinosaurs, where the Ice Park features wild animals sculptured with ice. The Magic Park is full of optical illusions utilising the visual arts and the Art Park is an eco-friendly part of the exhibition that expresses different ideas.

Alternative: If the Garden Glow festival is not open when you visit, you can go to the Dubai Festival City. There you find a mall, with many shops and restaurants (including a Hard Rock Cafe ), a waterfront promenade with great sunset views of the Dubai Skyline and a lovely outdoor area. Besides, there is a remarkable fountain show with lights and music daily starting at 7:30 pm and every half an hour until late.

How to get there (from Dubai Miracle Garden)?

The easiest way to go to Dubai Glow Park is to take a taxi/Uber from the Miracle Garden. With public transport, you need to take bus 105 back to the Mall of the Emirates metro station, and then take the metro to Al Jafiliya Station (Red line). The park is 30 minus on foot from there, so it’s better to take a taxi to do the final leg. Again, it can take more than 1 hour to do this route with public transport, while it is less than half an hour driving.

For Festival City, the directions (and route duration) are about the same. The difference here is that if you choose public transport, you need to get off at Deira City Centre metro station (Red line) and then take bus 53.

Day 5 – Yas Islands Theme Parks (Part I)

The last few days of the trip focus on enjoying all the thrill rides of the world-class theme parks in Yas Island.

In general, Yas Island is the top destination of leisure activities in Abu Dhabi, with two theme parks, a waterpark, a vertical wind tunnel, a beach, a formula track, a golf course, hotels, restaurants and more.

10:00 Abu Dhabi

Check out from your hotel in Dubai and make your way to Abu Dhabi. Leave your luggage at your accommodation and then continue to Yas Island.

See detailed instructions for moving between Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the planning your trip section , but in simple terms take a taxi from your hotel in Dubai to your hotel in Abu Dhabi.

11:00 Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

The Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is an indoor theme park in Yas Island. It is the first Ferrari-branded theme park that briefly transports you to Italy. Overall, the park is divided into four zones: Family Zone, F1 Zone, Italian Zone and Adventure Zone.

In total, the park has 37 rides. Some of the most popular ones (and my personal favourites) include the Flying Acre , which has the largest roller coaster loop in the world at 63m, the Formula Rossa which reaches a speed of 250km/h in 4.9 seconds and the Turbo Track that crosses through the middle of the park towards the sky.

Of course, there is a Ferrari Simulator, many merchandise options and an opportunity to test drive a real Ferrari car (extra payment required). Finally, two brand new experiences you can try (they were under construction when I visited) are Roof Walking and Zip Lining (extra payment required).

If you are staying in one of the Yas Islands hotels, then you may want to check for a shuttle bus option with your hotel. Otherwise, I suggest taking a taxi to Ferrari World. A few hotels in Abu Dhabi are part of a The Yas Express route to Yas Island , so keep that in mind when selecting hotels.

19:00 Yas Mall

For dinner head to Yas Mall next door. Apart from numerous local and international food chains, you can find many shops as well.

Day 6 – Abu Dhabi Sightseeing

Spend a day sightseeing in Abu Dhabi. You will probably need a couple of days to see all the main sights of the city, but below there is a selection of three of the main sights that you can easily explore in one day.

As the attractions below are all located in different parts of the city it will be easier to move around using a taxi. This will also allow you to spend more time at the places of interest rather than commuting.

10:00 Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world, welcoming visitors from around the globe. The Grand Mosque is renowned for its architecture which showcases different architectural styles from various Muslim civilisations. Overall, it can welcome up to 40 000 people daily, so a prior reservation to avoid long queues is necessary.

There are no signs around the mosque so if you want to learn more about it, you may need to take one of the daily free cultural tours in English that require no reservation and should last approximately 45 minutes. There is one almost every hour. Besides the tours, there are audio guides in 11 languages.

To visit the mosque visitors must adhere to a strict dress code: both men and women need to wear long, loose-fitting, ankle-length trousers or skirts. In addition, women must wear a headscarf. People who abide by the above will be given a robe to put on top of their clothes. Shoes must not be worn inside the mosque. Photography and videography inside the mosque are only allowed for personal use.

13:00 Louvre Abu Dhabi

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first museum of its kind in the country. It spans along 9200m 2 and its galleries feature loans from important French Museums, such as the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and the Centre Pompidou.

The architecture of the museum is inspired by many parts of Arabian life. An example is the lace dome which was designed to resemble the palm leaves and the light patterns that emerge from them.

In total, at the museum, there are 12 galleries with exhibits from the pre-historic era to the 20th century. Additionally, there is a wealth of activities, such as museum tours and workshops, as well as kayaking at the museum (extra charge). If you need an audio guide of the museum, it is available as a mobile application.

16:00 Observation Deck at 300

The Observation Deck at 300 is located at Tower 2, one of the five Etihad Towers n the city. It is located on level 74 and it is the highest viewing platform in Abu Dhabi. The Observation Deck at 300 (metres) has a café and part of the entry ticket can be redeemed there. One of the most famous activities is to have afternoon tea while enjoying the views. Reservations are recommended.

Alternative: If you prefer a cheaper activity, visit the Abu Dhabi Marina . There you can find the Marina Eye (a large ferry wheel) and the Marina Mall . A short walk from there, you can find one of the tallest free-standing flag poles in the world with the Abu Dhabi flag hanging from there. Right next to the flag pole , there is a point that offers amazing skyline views of Abu Dhabi. Note that en route to the viewpoint you will pass by Heritage Village , a tourist attraction about the culture of UAE. Unfortunately, on most days it closes at 4 pm, so it will most probably be closed by the time you get there.

Abu Dhabi Sightseeing Tour Bus

An alternative way to move around Abu Dhabi is to use one of the hop-on-hop-off buses. As you only have a day in Abu Dhabi, it is a great way to see many of the main sights of the city in a short amount of time.

To cover all three places of interest mentioned above, you should rearrange the order of visiting them a bit. Firstly, you should take the Red Line route at 9 am and get off at the Emirates Palace. From there, visit the Emirates Palace as the Observation Deck at 300 opens later in the day. Other stops you can get off are the Heritage Village, the Marina Mall and the Presidential Palace. Then, you should return to the starting point and change for the Green Line tour. On that route, get off at The Louvre, and then once you finish, continue to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. As you will most probably have taken one of the last buses of the day to get there, you may have to return to your hotel using a taxi.

Remember, that if you choose this option, you should be a bit more focused on the time, as there is only one bus every 30 minutes. Lastly, note that this option might be more expensive than using taxis to move around, as an online tour bus daily ticket costs around AED250.

Day 7 – Yas Islands Theme Parks (Part II)

This is the last full day in the UAE and it is dedicated to Warner Bros World theme park. After that, pack your bags and get ready for the return journey.

10:00 Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi

Warner Bros Abu Dhabi is an indoor theme park on Yas Island. It is one of the largest theme indoor theme parks in the world and the first Warner Bros theme park. The park is divided into 5 lands: Bedrock, Dynamite Gulch, Cartoon Junction, Gotham City and Metropolis.

In total, the park has 29 rides and shows. Some of my favourite rides were: Riddler Revolution , a spinning thrill ride, Fast and Furry-ous , a quick and fun ride, Green Lantern: Galactic Odyssey , a 4D flying theatre experience, and Superman 360: Battle for Metropolis , a 360 o and 3D show ride.

Don’t forget to look around the park for photo opportunities such as with Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Scoopy-Doo, Batman and Superman.

20:00 Dubai

Collect your luggage from your hotel in Abu Dhabi and return to Dubai for your return flight. Depending on the time of your flight, you may want to spend a night at a hotel close to the airport, before leaving the city.

The easiest way is to take a taxi to Dubai. For more options and advice check out the planning your trip section .

I only got a chance to stop by Dubai during my transit once last year. I managed to stop by some important spots in the city although I got there at midnight so even the souks were already close when I got there. I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite destination, but I certainly didn’t regret my decision to leave the airport and see what’s in there! 🙂

But real question is - how to plan your trip, and make it most memorable as well as most affordable. Most of the times, people are at the mercy of the travel consultants and tour guides for planning their trips.

We have so many examples of our friends and family that they did not have a good experience in their tours. Because many of the tour operators will just take you to places which give them the best discounts. So we thought to make a video on our YouTube Channel to help you plan your own customized trip which you will enjoy the most. There are some basic questions which we will answer for you.

And of course the most important question, Budget. Most of us first decide the budget and then see what all can fit in that budget. We will cover that too!

1. When to Travel

If you have a flexibility to choose when to travel to UAE, you would want to avoid the summers here. You may be aware of that best time to travel to UAE is from November till April, although people travel to UAE round the clock, throughout the year. So how would you choose when to come?

Let’s look at certain pros and cons to make this clearer

2. How long to Stay

Ideal stay duration in UAE is 7 to 8 days as a tourist, which is also most cost effective.

Some tour operators give packages of 4 to 5 day UAE trip, according to us that is very hectic so we won’t recommend you to do that.

Also, based on your budget, you can stretch your trip to cover more attractions of UAE. For your trip beyond 10 days, we will recommend you to have a day or at least half a day off just to unwind and relax.

This is looks like a simple step – obtaining a visa, but there are various options available to you. One disclaimer here that please do your research before you travel for the latest update on the visa rules and your eligibility for visa.

For tourists, the most common type of visa is tourist visa. You can apply for either 30 days or 90 days Validity, based on your requirements. You can apply for tourist visa through authorized travel agents. If you are flying with any of the UAE Airlines, they can get your tourist visa on your behalf. The cost changes from country to country sometimes, but in India, it costs around 300 AED or 6000 INR. These visas are extendable one time, if you wish to extend your stay.

With Visa on arrival, you will get 14 days validity. Citizens of certain countries including US, UK and Europe and many more are eligible for this type of visa. For Indian travelers, if you have a valid green card, US or UK travel visa, or residency of European counties, you can get visa on arrival at UAE. This will cost you around 35 USD or 100 AED.

So if you are coming from India and you want to stay here for more than 14 days, we would recommend you to take tourist visa instead of visa on arrival, even if you are eligible for it.

In all cases, you should have at least 6 month validity of your passport.

4. Where to stay

Ideally you would need 4-5nights in Dubai, 2 nights in Abu Dhabi. So let’s talk about where to stay in these two cities.

There are 4 types of stay options available to you.

3. Hotel or service apartments

4. Home Stays

You will get more options of stay in Dubai as compare to Abu Dhabi. If you are aiming to affordable or budget hotels, or service apartments in Dubai, you can find these hotels in Bur Dubai, Deira or Al Barsha, and have a metro connectivity.

5. How to move around in UAE

If you are visiting UAE, then public transport is your safest bet. Let’s look at the available travel options for you in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

For travel within Dubai, you have multiple modes of transport. Most reliable and convenient option is Dubai Metro.

Cabs are also easily available 24/7 and are fairly economical.

Dubai tram runs only in Dubai Marina Area, and Monorail runs only in Palm Jumeirah.

Places which are not accessible by Metro, you can reach there by Public buses.

For leisure and small distance travels, public bikes and e-scooters are available.

Ferry or a water taxi is also one of the best ways to enjoy the skyline of Dubai, without any traffic.

If you have a family of 4, or you have less time in UAE, it is better to rent a car for self drive, or hire a car (which means there will be a dedicated driver to take you around). Although, for driving a car here, you would need an international driving license and you should be familiar with left hand driving, local parking rules and speed limits, because speed cameras are installed everywhere in the UAE. You can use this car to travel to Abu Dhabi as well.

For Abu Dhabi, taxi is the best and reliable option to travel within the city. Between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, there are public buses available, which will take you from one city to the other, for around 25 AED per person.

For small distances, in Abu Dhabi as well, there are e-scooters and bikes are available within the city. Although in summers, they are not very comfortable because of extreme heat.

6. Where to go

So let’s assume you are coming here for a 7 day holiday. Where all you should go?

For that, we have made a must-do itinerary just for you, and understand the budget for this. You can keep adding days and activities over and above this as per your interests.

So that's all you need to know before you plan your trip. This was more focused on Dubai and Abu Dhabi, because these two cities have so many places to visit and most importantly, easy to move around. The other emirates also have some interesting places to visit, but you need to have more time and a mode of transportation to cover them. We will talk about those places some time later.

About the budget, the itinerary we have given might be slightly more than the cost of the normal package offered by some of the travel agents, but we are sure that the way we have planned the trip is the most affordable and value for money. Also, if you are travelling to UAE and visiting your family members there, you might get a good company as well as some comfort in moving around.

Day 1: Arrival in Abu Dhabi

Touch down in the UAE capital and start your holiday by checking into your hotel, which is conveniently located in the downtown area. We recommend choosing a property along the Corniche so you can take in views of the Persian Gulf and have easy access on foot to sights like the Grand Mosque.

Spend the afternoon wandering the Corniche’s pristine public beaches and parks, stopping for photos at landmarks like the UAE Pavilion and the Capital Gate Tower , known as the “Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi” . 

As the sun starts to set, make your way over to Emirates Palace to soak in the opulent interiors and grounds of Abu Dhabi’s most impressive sight.

Sit down for a relaxing dinner at one of the onsite restaurants, like Mezlai , with delicious Emirati cuisine. Make sure to see the Palace’s dome ceiling sparkle as it’s illuminated at night.

Day 2: Top Attractions in Abu Dhabi

Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at your hotel before heading out for a full day of sightseeing at Abu Dhabi’s cultural attractions. 

First up is a tour of the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque , a dazzling white marble structure that’s among the world’s largest mosques. Be sure to respect the dress code and plan at least 2 hours to see the mosque’s intricate details, like the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet.

Get fast-entrance access to all the Mosque with a guide and transport

Next, make your way to the Louvre Abu Dhabi , an impressive art and civilization museum designed by architect Jean Nouvel. Wander through galleries displaying ancient artefacts, Renaissance-era paintings, contemporary installations, and more.

Pick up a rental car and embark on a full-day trip to Al Ain, a lush oasis city along the Oman border that’s often called the “Garden City. ” 

Start your tour at Al Ain Oasis , a UNESCO site protecting a palm grove with over 147,000 date palms amid the desert landscape. Walk through the tranquil tree-lined pathways and see the ancient aflaj irrigation system still used today.

Continue on to Jebel Hafeet, a towering rocky mountain that provides sweeping views from the winding road to the peak. At the top, stop by the hilltop Mercure Grand Hotel for lunch while taking in panoramas overlooking the city and desert.

Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi – Transport Options Explained

Have you arrived at Dubai’s International Airport (DXB), but your end destination is actually Abu Dhabi ?

There are several different ways you can connect from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, some are slow but free, yes, FREE! Other options will get you there door to door but come at a cost.

Dubai to Abu Dhabi – Emirates Complimentary Coach

Other complimentary airline coach services in the uae, complimentary business and first class chauffers, using an airport taxi from dxb to abu dhabi, using a private transfer from dxb, using the public transport system from dxb to abu dhabi, self-driving dubai to abu dhabi.

If you’ve landed at DXB with Emirates, but your end destination is Abu Dhabi , you can book your airline ticket to end in Abu Dhabi and cover the last 160kms or so by ground transportation in a luxury coach.

When booking your airline ticket with Emirates, you simply need to enter your end destination as ZVJ. (Note Emirates does not fly directly to AUH airport, only DXB).

Your Abu Dhabi arrival point is outside the Emirates Abu Dhabi office in Khalidiya, on the Corniche.

Note that you still need to clear customs and collect your bags in Dubai Airport Terminal 3 before making your way to the coach service, parked in the same arrivals pick up zone as the taxis.

The bus runs five times a day (as of September 2023), and you will be allocated a seat at the same time you are issued your airline ticket. 

If your ticket only takes you to DXB, not ZVJ, you can call Emirates to add this service later after booking your ticket, but it MUST be pre-booked to guarantee your seat.

These are the current timings from DXB – you’ll want to give yourself at least an hour from disembarking and getting through immigration and customs.

There are several UAE airlines that also offer complimentary coaches , but none of these presently operate from DXB.

If you are transferring from Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi Airport with an airline other than Emirates, you’ll need to make your way to that airline’s head office in Dubai to join their complimentary coach. For example:

• Etihad operates a complimentary coach from Al Wasl Center, on Sheikh Zayed Road
• AirArabia offers a service from their office in Karama.
• WizzAir used to offer a complimentary service on AUH Express , which leaves from Ibn Battuta; but it looks like WizzAir passengers now need to pay extra for this add-on from Dubai.

If you are travelling business or first class with Emirates, passengers are able to choose the convenience of completing their journey with a chauffeur, all included in their ticket price.

You still need to reserve your transfer in advance, but it is by far the easiest option if you’re flying on the top deck or pointy end with Emirates and must complete your journey from DXB to Abu Dhabi.

Airport taxis from Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi are surprisingly efficient. It depends a bit on the vehicle size and how far into Abu Dhabi you’re travelling, but you can expect a standard taxi from the airport to cost around 350-400 AED and more like 500 – 550 AED if you need a 7 seater.

A standard Dubai taxi can only take a maximum of 4 passengers with 2 large pieces of luggage or 4 small cases. You’ll pay a 25 AED airport flagfall.

If you have a larger group, you’ll need an airport limousine. These cost an extra 1 AED per KM – which, over the 160 kilometres or so to Abu Dhabi, can quickly add up. There’s not much choice, though, with five passengers and luggage (beyond private services, which we’ll touch on below), so be prepared to pay more than 500 AED to get to Abu Dhabi in an airport limousine (these are usually Mercedes vans, not stretch limos!)

Worried about car seats for kids? Infant car seats can be borrowed on a complimentary basis from the taxi rank at DXB. Look out for this cabinet in the taxi queue (or ask staff to direct you). the taxi driver simply returns the seat when they next return to the airport.

You can use several private transfer services to complete your journey from DXB Airport to Abu Dhabi.

• The first and most obvious you’ve probably heard of before is Uber ( App Store | Google Play ), but also consider local company Careem ( App Store | Google Play ) – both will allow you to pre-book your service and lock in your price (do bear in mind what we said above, you may get just as good service with a public taxi).
• A trusted airport service that operates in many locations is Welcome Pick-Ups – see how their quotes compare to using a standard taxi.
• A unique private transfer method that is growing in popularity is Get Transfer – it runs kind of like an auction; you put your journey details in, and then drivers will bid to provide your service. If you get anything under 400 AED, we reckon you’re getting a good price. (NB similar service InDrive is not available in the UAE) .
• Tour and attraction providers such as Viator offer a wide range of competitively priced transport providers in the UAE.

We’re not going to lie; it’s not straightforward and will take you several hours to get from DXB to Abu Dhabi. However, if you’re travelling on a budget and got the time, this is the cheapest way of getting from Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi or Zayed International Airport.

Relying just on public transport between the two cities involves:

• Taking the Metro from DXB Metro station (easily found in arrivals) to Al Ghubaiba Station (27 minutes, 5 AED) OR Ibn Battuta Station (1 hour, 8.50 AED). You will need a Nol card .
• From Al Ghubaiba, you can catch the 100 Intercity Bus to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, Al Wadha (approximately 2 hours and 16 minutes). This service costs 25 AED one way and can be paid for using your Nol card.
• From Abu Dhabi Central Station , you can connect to local bus services to reach your destination. If this is Zayed International Airport (the new Abu Dhabi International Airport), you’ll want to take the A2 Bus back out to the airport, which is approximately another 50-minute journey and 4 AED.
• We have found that it is easier to take the Metro all the way to Ibn Battuta in Dubai, then you have two public buses to choose from, the 101 or the 102, and the AUH Express Airport bus .
• The 101 Intercity Bus (25 AED one way) goes to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. You need to take a further bus back to the airport from there as described above. If you are seeking other areas of Abu Dhabi, this is the most convenient service as you can connect to Abu Dhabi suburban services.
• The 102 Intercity Bus (25 AED) makes a few stops en route to Mussfah, which is outside of Abu Dhabi city, but conveniently, one of these side stops is now Zayed International Airport Terminal A . It takes a few minutes longer than the express bus but is 10 AED cheaper. This is also the most convenient if you seek areas of Abu Dhbai such as Shahama, before reaching the city
• The AUH Express bus (35 AED) from Ibn Battuta station is the new obvious choice for the quickest direct connection to Zayed International Airport. Be mindful that it only leaves once an hour, every hour, 24 hours a day.

(NB Nol card is not used in Abu Dhabi; when you’re in Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, you’ll need to pick yourself up a Hafilat, Abu Dhabi bus card for local services).

Are you confident behind the wheel and feel you’ll need a vehicle for your onward travels in the UAE? Then you could rent a car in Dubai and drive to Abu Dhabi. This could actually work out to be your cheapest and fastest option, depending on how large a car you need and how long for.

For anyone making their first trip to the UAE, a day in Dubai is a must. Dubai’s futuristic cityscape and glitzy facade really has to be seen to be believed, but underneath that facade is a dynamic city with a proud heritage and a love of tradition.

Whilst there are lots of organised day trips available, not all itineraries provide you with the opportunity to take your time and soak up the Dubai atmosphere. By planning your own trip to Dubai from Abu Dhbai, you are more flexible and can spend time where it suits you best.

In this article, we explain how to get to Dubai from Abu Dhabi and some of the things that you really shouldn’t miss when you go to Dubai, as well as taking a look at some of the guided tours available.

Rental Cars From Dubai to Abu Dhabi

How to get to Dubai from Abu Dhabi

Driving from Abu Dhabi to Dubai is relatively easy. It takes approximately 75 minutes to drive from Downtown Abu Dhabi to Downtown Dubai (Dubai Mall/Business Bay Area) along the E11 Sheikh Zayed Road.

Once in Dubai, the road system can seem a little confusing, so do take your time so you don’t miss your exit (Using guided navigation is a must! Locally, Waze is a very popular app or trusty old Google Maps).

There are plentiful car hire locations in Abu Dhabi, both in the Downtown area of the city and at the airport. You will just need your international driver’s license or IDP to hire a car (Renters under 25 years old may pay a young driver’s premium).

Pricing will vary significantly based on the model of vehicle you choose to drive.

• If you don’t want to do the driving, why not try Get Transfer? You can ask drivers to bid on your journey and choose the type of vehicle you want – sort of like Uber or Careem but more personalised and you’re locking in your journey for the whole day.

If you do want to take public transport , bus numbers E100, E101 and E102 travel between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The E100 and E101 routes begin at Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station (Al Wahda).

• The E100 takes over two hours and costs AED 25 one way to Al Ghubaiba Bus Station (connects to Green Line Metro in Bur Dubai).
• The E101 takes around 85 minutes and terminates at Ibn Battuta Bus Station , where you can connect with the Red Line Metro or local bus services. It also costs AED 25

The E102 starts in Mussafah and travels via Abu Dhabi International Airport to Ibn Battuta Mall Dubai, which takes approximately 115 minutes. The fee is also AED 25 one way.

Taking a taxi from Abu Dhabi to Dubai is by far the quickest and easiest way of travelling between the two cities if you don’t have your own car. A taxi from Abu Dhabi to Dubai Mall costs around AED 300 one way. Once in Dubai, taxis are easy to find and are a fairly inexpensive way of getting around the city.

There are literally hundreds of places you could visit in Dubai on a day trip , but we’ve narrowed it down for you to three of the most popular Dubai locations for a unique day trip experience.

A day at the world’s biggest shopping centre should not be missed by any visitor to the UAE. Even if you don’t plan on spending your hard-earned cash on designer swag, the sheer awesomeness of this ultra-chic mall is sure to impress even the most ardent shopping centre critic.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

At the heart of Dubai Mall is the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. Famous for its massive tank and underwater tunnel, the aquarium is home to 33,000 different species of fish and other aquatic creatures. Tickets start at AED 169, with various add-ons. Or you can simply admire the main tank from inside the Dubai Mall.

Shop til you drop

For those that enjoy shopping, some of the flagship stores include Bloomingdales and French department giant La Galleries Lafayette. There is also a designer section of the mall featuring brands such as Armani, Gucci and Dolce and Gabbana.

If you fancy some new threads but don’t want to break the bank, you’ll also find international high-street favourites such as H&M, Zara, M&S, American Eagle and Muji.

Part of the mall is designed like a traditional souk and contains many smaller shops selling finely crafted jewellery, carpets, pashminas and other middle-eastern souvenirs. Adored with fountains and intricate fretwork, the network of alley-like passages join together under a large dome where you will find, rather randomly, the illuminated fossilised skeleton of a diplodocus.

Time to eat in Dubai

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, the Mall basement is a culinary delight. Here you will find international favourites such as Wagamama and Texas Roadhouse, as well as more local flavours. There are a number of specialist luxury chocolate and date shops, such as Laderach, Neuhaus and Bateel, as well as various places to buy ice-cream.

At the Top – Burj Khalifa

As if the mall wasn’t enough if its own right, the whole complex is overshadowed by the magnificent Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building. Visit the ‘At the Top’ experience for magnificent views of the city and coastline. Pre-booking this part of your Dubai day trip is a must:

• Tickets to At The Top start from AED 169, which includes access to the viewing platforms on levels 124 and 125
• You can upgrade your ticket to a skip-the-line Premium experience with VIP access to Level 148, the highest deck open to the public
• Sunset tickets are the most popular, so you can expect to pay more for these valuable time slots!
• You can also look out for packages that include brunch or combo tickets with the Dubai Aquarium are always good value.

Access to the tower is gained at the basement level of the Mall (follow the signs marked ‘At the Top’). Do expect queuing to take up a significant portion of your visit; for those tight on time, we always suggest skipping the journey up as there’s only so much you can fit in one day in Dubai!

The Dubai Fountains

After a day of shopping (or visiting Dubai Mall’s other attractions), head outside to the Dubai Mall Fountains. These mesmerising musical fountains form a spectacular display every thirty minutes from 6:00 pm until 11:00 pm daily (timings differ during Ramadan).

• You can enhance your Dubai Fountains experience by taking one of the traditional abra boats out onto the lake

In stark contrast to the glitz and glamour of Dubai Mall, a day in the old part of Dubai will give you an insight into the history and traditions of this rapidly changing global city.

Start your day with a traditional abra ride along the creek or make your way through the souks towards the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (also known as Al Bastikiya).

At present, Dubai Museum and the Al Fahidi fort are under renovation, but there is plenty to see in this area. The neighbourhood is studded with art galleries, workshops and quaint cafes. The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding is a must-stop for those wanting to learn more about Islamic culture.

Another option away from the shopping malls is a visit to the beautiful Jumeirah Mosque.

Another day trip option from Dubai features a trip to Dubai Marina and the Jumeirah Beach area known as JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residences).

Start your day with breakfast or a morning coffee by the waterside at Dubai Marina Mall before admiring the yachts in the swanky marina. You can easily walk from the Marina to the JBR in the cooler months, but from April to October, taking a water taxi may be a less sweaty option.

JBR is a beachside boulevard jammed full of shops and restaurants, as well as frequent pop-up markets and street entertainers. Access to the beach is free (deck chair payable), and there are showers and changing facilities available for a small fee. In addition to the beach, there is a playground and splash park for children as well as other sporting facilities.

It is possible to take boat trips from Dubai Marina along the coast as far as the Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Hotel’s iconic sail-shaped hotel. This is a chilled-out option that allows you to see some of Dubai’s major landmarks whilst relaxing on the deck or in the comfort of the air-conditioned cabin.

The Burj Al Arab do take lunch and afternoon tea reservations from outside guests, so if you want to experience the delights of this 7-star mega-hotel without actually staying the night, this might be the way to do it. For more details, click here.

In addition to scheduled boat tours from Dubai Marina, there are numerous luxury yacht trips available to book in advance, like this one.

As the sun sets, watch the marina light up and treat yourself to sundowners in one of the Marina’s many rooftop bars and restaurants.

Adjacent to the Glow Garden (and accessed through the same entrance) is Dubai Dinosaur Park, a space filled with realistic animatronic models as well as some hands-on dinosaur-based activities.

Dubai Marina Dinner Cruise

Dubai has a fantastic Metro system, and it is fairly easy to get from place to place on the main Metro route through the heart of the city; you will need to get all members of your group over 5 years old a Nol card .

Taxis are, however, a much more convenient option when you’re only briefly day-tripping to Dubai. Don’t underestimate the heat and distances involved in Dubai; walking is often not the best option, even for fairly short distances.

Guided tours are a great way to see a new city for the first time. Whilst Dubai is a relatively easy city to explore alone, it’s reassuring to know that you have a guide who will take you to the best spots and teach you what you need to know about them.

Tour groups are often able to jump queues, and lunch reservations are often made in advance, taking the hassle out of you finding a table in what can be very busy areas. Just how different are Dubai and Abu Dhabi ?

While only a little over an hour's drive from each other on the country's Persian Gulf coast, these two major metropolises are distinctly different. 

So which is the best? Let's hear the arguments from two writers before you decide. 

Why Dubai is more fun

Lonely Planet Editor-at-Large Sebastian Modak’s idea of a good time is asking a Dubai cab driver where to get lunch. And then, after a delicious meal, asking the employees at that restaurant where he should go for dinner. 

I could take the easy route here by listing all the superlatives attached to Dubai. In a single afternoon, you can take an elevator to the top of the world’s tallest building , hit your 10,000 steps in the world’s largest shopping mall and even glide down the world’s largest indoor ski slope. You can ride the world’s largest Ferris wheel and then kick back in “the world’s only seven-star hotel.” You ask why, Dubai answers, “Because we can.”

But pointing to Dubai’s unmistakable appeal as a kind of living theme park for tourists is too obvious. Instead, I want to point you to its real beauty, as a crossroads of the world. Name a nationality and you’ll find it in Dubai. Sure, the same could be argued for nearby Abu Dhabi, but as a global financial center, Dubai just has more of it. And it’s a place where encountering the world – without the government bureaucrats and buttoned-up diplomats you’ll find in Abu Dhabi – is just more fun.

The real magic of the city is found where it began, along Dubai Creek and in the low-rise neighborhoods of Bur Dubai and Deira that extend on either side of it. It’s like stepping back in time – the 1960s are ancient history in a city as new as Dubai – and is a reminder of what the city was like before it started growing vertically. Follow your nose through the souks and in no time you’ll find the best Filipino, Indian, Pakistani and Iranian food you’ll find outside of the Philippines, India, Pakistan and Iran. Overwhelmed? There’s a tour for that: the women-run Frying Pan Adventures offers walking tours with a focus on the immigrant communities and their cultures that flourish away from the five-star hotels and amusement parks.

Top neighborhoods to explore in Dubai

Okay, but maybe you came to Dubai because you want the amusement park vibes. You can encounter the world in one of those too, at the deliciously kitschy Global Village. A kind of turbocharged Epcot Center, “village” is an understatement here. Spread over a massive space, different countries and regions are given different pavilions to sell food and handicrafts. It’s a celebration of the 190-something nationalities that make the U.A.E. the U.A.E and good, old family-friendly fun.

Abu Dhabi is your very cultured – but, let’s be honest, kind of stuffy – uncle. Dubai is your polyglot friend who knows about that one hole-in-the-wall kebab spot where you can have the best meal of your life for under ten dollars but is also going to convince you to go skydiving and splurge on beachside cocktails right afterward. And they’ll have a whole other day planned when you wake up the next morning.

Abu Dhabi: A Stuffy Uncle?

Dr. Jenny Walker is a long-term resident in the Middle East where she works in higher education; she has contributed to many Lonely Planet guidebooks on the region over the years, including the first edition of the Abu Dhabi pocket guide .

The strait-laced alter ego of Dubai? Abu Dhabi only appears as such to those who don’t know better. And you could be forgiven for not knowing better because, where Dubai likes to talk itself up, boasting ‘biggest’ this and ‘fastest’ that, Abu Dhabi doesn’t feel the need to brag, quietly confident as the Emirati capital. 

Modesty shouldn’t be confused with mediocrity, however, and Abu Dhabi is no stranger to world records. But where Dubai measures firsts in terms of tower blocks, Ferris wheels and shopping malls, Abu Dhabi’s best lists are more culturally unique. Take the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque ; with its 100,000 tons of marble fashioned into 80 domes, 1000 pillars and four 107m-high minarets, it’s a masterpiece of contemporary Islamic design. Accommodating 40,000 worshippers, the great prayer hall, lit with 12 tons of crystal chandeliers and burnished with 40 kilos of 24kt galvanized gold, houses the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. Weighing in at 38 tons, that’ s a superlative to boast about!

Or let’s talk dynamic innovation. There’s Capital Gate , a building with the world’s greatest tilt, or Masdar City , built with recycled materials and focused on energy efficiency. The Saadiyat Cultural District will showcase the largest cluster of cultural structures built this century and already Abu Dhabi Louvre is breath-taking with palm-frond-inspired interior and wealth of art displayed within. 

Prefer theme parks to museums? Abu Dhabi has those too. In fact, it has a whole island dedicated to high-adrenaline fun with a Grand Prix circuit and twilight racing showing off the Yas Island marina complex to its most glittering advantage. Next door, the world’s fastest rollercoaster, at Ferrari World , hurls the brave from zero to 240km/h in 4.9 seconds.

So no, this capital city is not shy of world records, nor is it as parochial as its neighbor would have you believe. Abu Dhabi doesn’t need a Dubai-style Global Village because it encompasses the real thing. Grown wealthy on oil (and formerly pearling), it knows about trade and its international malls and restaurants add accretions to the cultural mix, like the layering of a Gulf pearl. 

Hashel Al Lamki: Creating space for creativity in Abu Dhabi

Stroll the Corniche and it’s quickly apparent that Abu Dhabi isn’t simply a blandly globalized entrepôt. It identifies with Bedouin roots, celebrated in camel races, dog-rearing at the Arabian Saluki Centre  and bird-husbandry at the Falcon Hospital. In fact, Bedouin culture is everywhere in evidence – from coffee-drinking hospitality in the Qasr Al Sarab desert resort to cross-legged storytelling on a Liwa Oasis sand dune. Yes, in Dubai you can ski on a black run, but you could probably do that closer to home on real snow. Where other than Abu Dhabi, though, can you paddle by kayak through herons in a thicket of mangrove in search of sea cows? 

So, let’s forget about ‘stuffy uncle’ to Dubai’s petulant nephew and think ‘sophisticated aunt’. Grown-up, multi-tasking, urbane (like the Abu Dhabi women emerging from higher education), she wears a glamorous pair of heels beneath the abaya to impress those gutsy enough to engage.

Theme parks inspired by film and television, as Saudi Arabia announces Dragon Ball land

A theme park inspired by Dragon Ball , a popular Japanese manga and anime franchise, has been announced in Saudi Arabia.

Qiddiya Investment Company , which is also building the first Six Flags amusement park in the region, announced the project over the weekend, much to the excitement and anticipation of the show's fans.

No official opening date has been revealed yet, but when it does open, it will be the world's first Dragon Ball -inspired theme park, allowing visitors to experience the adventures of Goku and the manga's entire ensemble in person.

To be located in Qiddiya, an entertainment and tourism megaproject in Riyadh, the park will span 500,000 square metres. It will feature seven themed lands with more than 30 rides, as well as hotels and restaurants.

Renderings of the park show landmarks recognisable to fans of the franchise, including the pink island bungalow Kame House and the domed Capsule Corporation. The centrepiece of the park is the 70-metre-high rollercoaster based on Shenron, the mythical wish-granting dragon that can be summoned by anyone who collects all the seven titular balls.

The theme park announcement comes at a significant time, just weeks after the death of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama and in the same year that Japanese graphic novels are celebrating their 40th anniversary.

This is not the first time a pop culture series has inspired a theme park. Taking inspiration from beloved characters, settings and storylines elevates the experience of amusement park goers, especially for those who happen to also be familiar with the thematic references.

Here are some of the most popular pop culture inspired theme parks in the region:

Motiongate Dubai

Located within the vast Dubai Parks and Resorts complex, Motiongate Dubai takes inspiration from Hollywood. It showcases five themed areas dedicated to popular films. For example, the DreamWorks Animation area houses attractions based on Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon , Madagascar and Shrek .

There is also a zone dedicated to films from Columbia Pictures, including Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs , Hotel Transylvania and Ghostbusters. Rides and attractions based on the Hunger Games and John Wick franchises can be found in the Lionsgate area, while a children-focused entertainment can be found at The Smurfs' Village.

Warner Bros World, Abu Dhabi

One of the largest indoor theme parks in the world, Warner Bros World in the UAE capital features six themed lands.

Gotham City and Metropolis are based on the fictional settings of DC Comics characters Batman and Superman, Cartoon Junction land features rides and attractions based on characters such as Scooby-Doo, Tom and Jerry, as well as Bugs Bunny and friends; an American desert landscape is recreated at Dynamite Gulch, with featuring Looney Tunes characters including Wile E Coyote and Marvin the Martian. Fans of The Flintstones will enjoy a trip back in time to the Stone Age in the Bedrock area, where visitors can go on a scenic boat tour, taking in prehistoric sights and sounds along the way. Over in Warner Bros Plaza, cinema lovers will enjoy a meander through a world inspired by the Golden Age of Hollywood, with shopping and dining options befitting the theme, such as Hollywood Trattoria and Celebrity Scoop soda shop.

Guests can also check into the The WB Abu Dhabi, Curio Collection by Hilton hotel to be close to all of the action, with a Warner Bros-themed hotel stay.

Coming soon: Harry Potter Themed Land at Warner Bros World, Abu Dhabi

Next year, Warner Bros World will add another immersive world to its ranks, the first Harry Potter-themed land in the Middle East.

Fans of the book and film franchise will be able to step into the wizarding world of Harry Potter and friends. Announced by Miral in 2022, the park promises to stay "as true to the story as possible," Miral Experiences chief executive Julien Kauffmann told The National last month, while bringing the experience "to the next level".

There are already four of Harry Potter-themed amusement park areas located at Universal Studios around the world. In the US there are two, one located at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida and a second at Universal Studios Hollywood in California. In Asia, you can currently immerse yourself in JK Rowling's fictional world at Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Beijing, the newest of the four, which opened in 2021. Each of the Wizarding Worlds have a number of Harry Potter-themed attractions, including the Flight of the Hippogriff roller coaster for children and the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey guided vehicle ride. There is also an interactive Ollivander's Wand Shop Experience located at each of the four parks.

In England, you can visit the Making of Harry Potter experience at the Warner Bros Studio Tour London, which displays parts of the original film sets, as well as original props and costumes from the movie franchise.

Angry Birds World, Doha

Inside Doha Festival City is the world's first theme park inspired by popular video game Angry Birds, which was extended into a Netflix television series, Angry Birds Toons , in 2013. Featuring the game's identifiable characters, Red, Chuck, Matilda and more, the space combines arcade games, indoor and outdoor rides and attractions, and a water park.

More than 20 attractions are featured at the park, including drop tower ride Blast Bomb, family-friendly flat ride Bouncing Blues and Super Slingshot, a ride that flings guests 60 metres into the air. There is also a laser tag arena, a trampoline park and an adventure zone with zip lines and slides.

IMG Worlds of Adventure, Dubai

The indoor amusement park IMG Worlds of Adventure is divided into five different zones – two of which are based on Cartoon Network and the Marvel universe.

The Cartoon Network zone features some of its most popular characters, including Ben 10 and the Powerpuff Girls. There are also rides and attractions based on Adventure Time and The Amazing World of Gumball . The Marvel area features character-inspired rides, including the Thor Thunder Spin, a spinning water ride; Spider-Man Doc Ock's Revenge, a roller coaster with 180° views; and Avengers Battle of Ultron guided vehicle ride.
