Dr. Johnson was a member of the IBM Academy of Technology, an IBM Master Inventor with more than 45 pending and issued patents, author of over 80 technical publications and books, and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. She is the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering.

What inspired you to write your memoir?

How did being the first black woman ph.d. in electrical & computer engineering impact your career, can you explain what the title of the book, soft power for the journey means.

Several years ago, I had a conversation with a friend who emphatically said to me that I was special and unique. She mentioned there are few people in the world who look like me and do what I do. Stop trying to blend in and be like the rest of us. You need to stand out and be visible, to inspire and encourage others to pursue STEM careers. 

Soft Power is drive, inner strength, perseverance, boldness, confidence, determination, and a strong faith. I have leveraged this soft power in my life’s journey.

How did the challenges of graduate school and corporate America affect the trajectory of your career

I had adjusted to being the only one and focused on the work. My professional interests and passions were in line with those of my colleagues. In this regard, I felt right at home and actively contributed substance, as a team member, on many impactful projects. From time to time, I encountered issues. However, I was able to work through them with the assistance of mentors and sponsors who were in positions of power and influence. While there were a few times when I was slow in getting the recognition, etc. for my work, I never felt as though my career was derailed.

I used soft power, along with invaluable assistance, advice, and words of wisdom from mentors, sponsors, and friends, in most instances, to address these challenges. As a result, I learned how to navigate academia and corporate America, and became stronger and wiser. It was this combination that affected my career trajectory.

What advice would you give to young women who plan for a career a career in stem.

Here's an example. It was the disappointment of a promotion that I believe I earned that was the catalyst for me to take some time to focus on who I am and why am I here on earth. That led me to find my true purpose and destiny, and it was not what I originally thought.  So that event accelerated the discovery of my true purpose. I believe I would have eventually got here, but it was the obstacle that accelerated the trajectory. I am happy to be someone who is living on purpose. It makes life more fulfilling.

If you have a passion for this, and you know this is something you were born to do, then pursue it with every ounce of your being. Surround yourself with supporters. They may be family, friends, sponsors, mentors, and coaches. Some of them may not be able to help you technically, but do not underestimate the power of positive, moral support. Do not allow the uninformed and unenlightened tell you that you do not belong. They are merely sharing with you their unsolicited opinion. You are the captain of your ship. You steer it in the right direction, and you will have a long, impactful, and rewarding career. All the best to you!

My way out of living a lower class, challenging but happy life was through education. It was the unlocking of my mind that holistically broadened my views about life. It has been through education that I learned about our global society, people, systems, structures, life. It was through education that I transitioned from living in a financially challenged household, raised by a single mother of four children, to professional success and financial independence. This is my story, and it’s just the beginning! I am no longer in a place where I am just tolerated, or worse. I am in a place where I am celebrated for my skills, abilities, passion for delivery, desire to touch the lives of millions, and make a difference. It is through a continued, lifelong, educational process that I will continue to live life to its fullest, to make an impact on this global society, and to encourage millions to aspire to attain their God-given greatness! Be encouraged, be strong, your life is but a journey. Make it a good one.

It has been an incredible life thus far, and I sense all has been preparation for what happens next in my life’s journey. From the encouragement of MaMe and other family members in my early years, to my unexpected wins in high school and academic successes as an undergraduate, I have been preparing for this. From my difficult and challenging graduate school experiences to my experiences in corporate America, from good to bad and ugly, I have been preparing for this. From my personal experiences with relationships to my wonderful new life with Leonard, I have been preparing for this. From my experiences as an entrepreneur to my corporate board impact thus far, I have been preparing for this. Throughout this journey I kept focusing on my future impact. Even when it was difficult to do, when I didn’t really see how, with my strong faith, I focused on the future.

Her mother, Pina Olarte, has always been a source of inspiration for her. "My mother was the first woman in our Colombian family to pursue a college education, unheard of in the 1950s for Latin American women," Olarte de Kanavos revealed. "I grew up with two sisters and no brothers. We were encouraged to be successful and believed that women could compete with men. My mother was an executive secretary, an important role in the 1960s. She also started her own restaurant business, which was rare for a woman then. She was my good friend, role model, and somebody I could rely on. I admired her greatly."

Starting next month, we’ll increase the number of image generation boosts per day from 15 to 100. Powered by the DALL-E 3 model, Microsoft Designer image generation allows users to create custom images from text descriptions, transforming written ideas into visual art. Users will be able to initiate up to 100 rapid image generation requests daily, significantly reducing waiting times for image creation and unlocking new productivity.

Afghan woman writes about her decadelong journey from her home country to America

Author Zarifa Adiba believes all the women in Afghanistan should be free.

Author Zarifa Adiba discusses her journey from Afghanistan to international music fame in her new book "Playing for Freedom: The Journey of a Young Afghan Girl."

Adiba said she was just like other Afghan girls, with ambition, dreams and courage. However, she says what made her luckier was her passion for music.

Music became Adiba's lifeline, her escape from the harsh realities of Afghanistan. Her dedication to the viola led her to the prestigious Afghanistan National Institute of Music, where she rose to the position of co-conductor of the Afghan Women's Orchestra.

ABC News sat down with Adiba, who discussed her heartbreak about what is going on in Afghanistan today and her new book.

ABC NEWS LIVE: Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan three years ago, life for women has once again become much more difficult. But since she was very young, Zarifa Adiba has always had a plan and plenty of ambition to live freely.

In her new book, "Playing for Freedom: The Journey of a Young Afghan Girl," she tells the remarkable, nearly decadelong voyage that has led her ultimately to America. Zarifa, it's so good to have you in our studio. Thank you so much for coming.

I understand that you grew up very poor in Afghanistan. What ultimately got you here? I know there was a lot of drive, a lot of ambition, but what makes you different, perhaps, from other young Afghan girls?

ADIBA: Thank you for having me here. I don't think anything makes me different than other Afghan girls. I feel every Afghan girl has a lot of ambition, dreams, and they are very courageous. But what made me, made me luckier, was music.

I had a different kind of passion for music, and I, I was like: it is music or nothing. So I went for music, and music opened many other doors for me.

ABC NEWS LIVE: So you picked up the viola, feverishly began playing. You end up joining the Afghanistan National Institute of Music and ultimately start conducting, as co-conductor of the Afghan Women's Orchestra. Wanted to take a look at a clip from you performing at just 18 years old in Davos, Switzerland, where -- it's just beautiful to listen to you.

You say that this gave you the reputation back at home as a bad girl. What happened when you returned back?

ADIBA: So nobody knew that I'm a musician. And, it was a risk to perform at the World Economic Forum. A risk that I took it from the very beginning when I started playing my first notes. I feel like, Afghanistan, my beautiful homeland, has been at war for several decades and war usually destroys culture, education, system, traditions. It destroys everything.

And partially it had destroyed music, too; music's reputation. Music was very hard, even for boys. Let's not even talk about girls, because it was just, it was just not easy. Today, girls are not allowed to go to school. Just imagine that. How would it be to play music and hold a viola? Everything that I used to do, I think was making me a bad girl.

And in my country, a good girl is the one who does what society decides for them and, for me, I always have been the one deciding for myself whether it was music, whether it was having my hair out, or, traveling abroad or, studying English or having the dream to go to Harvard. Whatever dream I used to have, I was deciding them for myself.

ABC NEWS LIVE: What do you think about what's happening in your homeland in Afghanistan today? 

ADIBA: To be honest, I'm heartbroken what is happening to my homeland. We could change a lot in Afghanistan, but everyone left us and, the Taliban, who have killed my friends, I cannot forgive them.

But the entire world just gave it up again to them. But today, after three years, now, sometimes I sit and I think I'm like, I wish, I wish I could just hold all the girls and women of Afghanistan out of that country. I wish there was another land.

We could put all the women and girls there and leave the entire country to the men and the politicians and be like, OK, fight now. Do whatever you want to do with with that land, right? But it's not like that.

If it's education, it is banned for girls. If it's music, it's banned. If it is work, not for women. If it is anything, all the politics, all their rules and regulations, everything is on women. And, all of those things. I'm just, I'm just heartbroken, and, I just hope that it change.

National Weather Service determines cause of storm damages in Anderson County, what to know

The National Weather Service has determined that the observed damage on Friday was not along a clear path indicative of a tornado and was attributed to straight-line winds of less than 75 mph.

Following Wednesday night's storms, Anderson Emergency Management received reports of downed trees and power lines in the area.

Anderson Emergency Management and the National Weather Service deployed teams Friday to assess the damage, assist residents, and determine whether a tornado had made landfall.

"We conducted windshield surveys to assess the damage in the area, taking note of any property damage to personal property and businesses," Cade Treffeisen, deputy director of Emergency Management for Anderson County, said.

The survey team began their journey in Anderson County, passing through Northlake, Anderson, Belton, and Princeton.

"The team found evidence only of straight-line winds , with a peak intensity of 75 mph, in downtown Anderson," said Clay Chaney, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. "A building suffered minor structural damage, and several trees fell on houses in the western part of Laurens County."

Reports indicate that the affected area encompassed the far western region of Laurens County and was located entirely to the west of US Highway 25.

He said this type of storm is significant, but it is not unusual for this time of year.

"We saw scattered trees and structural damage to homes and businesses as we drove through the city of Anderson," Steve Wilkinson from the National Weather Service said.

The team picked up the survey again near US Highway 221 north of Waterloo in Laurens County, generally traveling southeast to near Mountville and Cross Hill.

The survey ended before the team reached the Newberry County line.

Power Outages in Anderson County

According to a Duke Energy Map of power outages in the Upstate, Anderson County was the hardest hit, with 19,000 Duke customers without power as of Thursday morning.

On Friday, Carolina Power helped restore power on North Street, which affected several homes near Linley Park.

A fallen Oak tree was visible near the AnMed Health Services building on Calhoun Street in Anderson, a tree had fallen on a house on Shannon Way in Anderson, and a fallen tree was visible off State Highway 252 in Belton.

Thursday morning in Honea Path

A Honea Path homeowner in Anderson County recorded what appeared to be a funnel cloud on Thursday morning.

Lori Dozier  captured video and photos in Anderson County early Thursday morning as severe storms moved through the area. She posted the video and pictures on her social media accounts.

At 2 a.m., she started recording the storm using her cell phone, pointing it toward the neighbor's home as the children woke up the rest of the family, which included Dozier's partner, father, and son.

"We witnessed a downdraft that caused our porch lights to swing back and forth and almost tip over," Dozier said in a previous article with the Independent-Mail.

The UPWalker is larger and heavier than traditional rollators and may not be suitable for smaller, frail elderly users or others lacking the strength to maneuver a larger mobility device.

No, the UPWalker comes fully assembled with an easy-to-follow User Guide. It can be removed from the box, adjusted to your personal desire and used immediately.

Yes, a fabric seat that slides front to back for sitting or walking with long strides. Also comes with comfortable backrest support for sitting.

Yes, the UPWalker comes standard with a personal item bag that attaches to the front of the frame. Also available as options are a Luxury Item Bag (with a zipper-close top) and a Shopping Bag (larger bag with carry handles for shopping.)

U have owned my UPWalker since before the pandemic. It's a great investment. In order to maintain my physical fitness, I walk at least 10,000 steps every other day. My back won't tolerate a normal rollator. The only problem is that LifeWalker Mobility became Journey, the mail and phone numbers have changed. This is difficult for a Septuagenarian.

I have been using the upwalker since they 1st came out. I love it. I bought a cheaper one another brand to keep in my car. But I had a bad fall with it. So I am now buying a 2nd upwalker to keep in my car. It is more supportive not as films as brand #2. I would really give this a 10. I have people stop me where ever to ask about it. I was probably one of the 1st in Utah to buy the upwalker. Thank you for giving us seniors something that really works.

I have been using the UPWalker Lit for about 2 years. I have scoliosis in my upper and lower back. My caregiver checked my upper back and said the scoliosis in my upper back was gone.

I credit the UPWalker for straightening it. You stand straight. It is very light to put in the car.

The walker takes a while to get used to, because the mechanism is different from the typical rollator but saves the back by walking upright. Turning is still a challenge because I rely heavily on the UpWalker but overall this walker is worth the effort to learn!

I have been using a different brand of an upright walker for over a year. I loved it, but it was just a bit too short and the seat prevented me from being able to take steps without bashing my knees into it. With my new large Original UPWalker, I can stand up very straight, and not have to alter my gait as the seat pushes forward so that my knees don't hit at all! I absolutely love this thing! Further, at least one person, every time I am out in public, asks me about it. I am happy to answer their questions and tell them where I got it. Thank you for selling such quality products!!
