Education in Tennessee

Knox Prep welcomes new students into a family atmosphere

  • by Sky Arnold
  • May 2, 2024

Tawanya Figgs says she felt her 11-year-old son Ta’vion Wilson needed a change going into his sixth-grade school year.

Figgs says the traditional public schools in Knox County aren’t preparing him for high school and she’s been looking into private school options.  Her search for an alternative ended after meeting staff at the new Knoxville Preparatory School.

knox prep tour

“They were just so family oriented and just so friendly and polite and just open arms where it’s like if you didn’t know what was going on they were willing to tell you or give you a better idea of what you’re going to be getting yourself into,” said Figgs. “Feel like you’ve known these people forever and you just met them.”

Knox County School Board members approved Knox Prep last year and the public charter school is planning to open in August with a founding class of sixth-graders, including Wilson. The school will be a replication of the all-boys Chattanooga Preparatory School in Hamilton County, eventually serving grades six through twelve.

Figgs says the “brotherhood” model the school plans to provide is ideal for her son as he’s the youngest of four children.  Wilson’s closest sibling is four years older.

“I think getting him involved with boys his age and introducing him to stuff that’s different, other than what the other middle schools offer, I think will be great for him because it’s the lower ratio aspect for the kids per teacher and it’s not as many kids starting in the school system versus going into the Knox County School System,” said Figgs.

The school’s family atmosphere was on display at a recent “Welcome to Knox Prep” event Figgs and her son attended.

It provided future students and parents a chance to tour the campus and get to know school staff, extracurricular opportunities, and support services, setting the stage for a smoother transition into the first year.

“The success of our inaugural ‘Welcome to Knox Prep’ event reflects the warm and inclusive community that defines Knox Preparatory School,” said Knox Prep Principal Janet Bravo . “We are thrilled to welcome our new scholars and their families into the Knox Prep family and look forward to supporting them as they embark on this exciting chapter of their academic lives.”

knox prep tour

The academic plan for the new school was also a big selling point to Figgs.

The state named Chattanooga Prep to its Reward school list this year for demonstrating high levels of performance and/or growth.

Knox Prep will provide the same collaborative community model and Figgs believes it’s what her son needs to be prepared for high school and college.

“The Knox Prep is going to show them the different trades. They’re more hands on, they offer different things for the boys to do in the program so it’s not like they’re just sitting there just to get pushed through,” said Figgs.

Boston honor roll students play first-ever kickball game at Fenway Park

Honor roll students from schools in Dorchester, Roxbury and Charlestown played the first-ever kickball game at Fenway Park.

Roughly 60 seventh and eighth graders from the districts of Massachusetts state Reps. Christopher Worrell and Dan Ryan competed against each other Tuesday and toured the beloved ballpark.

Ahead of the game, the state representatives traded some friendly banter over who would pay for the pizza party afterward.

Worrell proposed the kickball game over lunch to Ryan, who has represented the Fenway-Kenmore district since new lines were drawn two years ago.

Fifteen students from each team played the game while the others toured the grounds. The students' families were also invited to watch the game.

Wanyne Soto German, a seventh grade student at Roxbury Prep Dorchester Campus, said it felt good to be celebrated for his hard work.

"I feel great, fired up and ready to play," German said.

Ykyttra Dixon, a parent in attendance at the event, said it's important to celebrate the achievements. Having grown up in Boston, Dixon said she went to public schools and recalled having pizza parties but had not experienced celebration this way.

"To be honored in such a way for having high achievements definitely means a lot to our kids and to the parents. I'm a proud parent," she said.

“It’s a historic ballpark that I think every kid should enjoy both, either going to a Red Sox game or just enjoying the historic nature of the building,” Ryan told WBUR.

When the game was over, the teams headed over to Game On!, a pub with games on Lansdowne Street, for a pizza party.

Worrell said the event is one way to help “dispel narratives” that students from Dorchester and Charlestown don't get along well.

"This is a great way of bringing our kids together, bringing the next generation together to go play a game of kickball," Worrell said.

Both representatives said they hope to turn the game into a tradition that can give students from their districts something fun to look forward to each year.

"I'm just having a great time seeing and honoring our students that worked so hard throughout the year," Worrell said.

Peter Malnati emotional discussing Grayson Murray, dead at 30: 'It's a really hard day'

knox prep tour

Editor's note: This story has been updated with a statement from Grayson Murray's parents on the cause of his death.

The golf world was left reeling on Saturday with news that two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray had died . He was 30 years old.

Murray withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas on Friday with what the PGA deemed to be an "illness." Earlier this year, he won his second and final career victory on the tour at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Jan. 14.

Murray's death has had an effect on numerous people within the sport of golf and beyond. Among them: PGA Tour golfer and Tennessee native Peter Malnati , who was Murray's final golf pairing in Rounds 1 and 2 at the Charles Schwab Invitational. Malnati and Murray shot 2 over par and 2 under par, respectively, in Thursday's Round 1. Malnati shot 1 under in Round 2, whereas Murray shot 5 over through 16 holes before withdrawing.

REQUIRED READING: Grayson Murray death: What to know of PGA, Arizona State golfer who passed away at 30

Malnati, who grew up in Dandridge, Tennessee and graduated from Jefferson County High School, spoke at length about Murray and the effect his passing had among others on the tour.

"This is going to be really hard. I didn't know Grayson all that well, but I spent the last two days with him," Malnati told CBS Sports . "And, it's so funny — we get so worked up out here about a bad break here, or a good break there. Look ... we're so competitive. It's so competitive out here. We all want to beat each other.

"And then something like this happens and you realize we're all just humans. It's just a really hard day. Because you look at Grayson, and you see in him someone who has physically, outwardly struggled in the past, and he's been open about it. And then you see him kind of get his life back to a place where he's feeling good about things. It's just so sad."

Below is the full clip of Malnati discussing Murray.

REQUIRED READING: Grayson Murray's shocking death led to an outpouring of tributes from golf fans

As Malnati alluded to, Murray has been open and honest in discussing his struggles wiith depression and alcoholism. Indeed, he spoke at length about it during his January win at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

“I would drink during tournament weeks," Murray said. "It was my outlet. I thought I was invincible coming out here as a 22-year-old, winning as a rookie, played three days hungover when I won. Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year, but also feeling like I was invincible.

"It took me a long time to get to this point. That was seven years ago, over seven years ago. I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."

On Sunday, Grayson Murray's parents — Eric and Terry Murray — released a statement on his death. They confirmed that he took his own life.

Memorial Day 2024: Remembering Amherst soldier killed days before World War II ended in Europe

  • Published: May. 26, 2024, 7:15 a.m.

Florence American Cemetery, Italy

Army Capt. John P. Serex, of Amherst, is among the American war dead buried at the Florence American Cemetery in Italy. Serex was killed in action on April 20, 1945 during fighting in the Po Valley. He served with the 1st Armored Division, 81st Cavalry Reconnaisance Squad. (CYNTHIA G. SIMISON / THE REPUBLICAN) Third Party submitted

April 20, 1945.

Adolf Hitler marked his 56th birthday inside a bunker in Berlin as Soviet artillery began bombarding the city, marking the beginning of the end for World War II in Europe.

In northern Italy, 26-year-old Army Capt. John Philip Serex was killed in action by the Nazis as the Allies entered the foothills of the Apennine Mountains in pursuit of retreating Axis forces who fled into the Po River valley.

“The turning point in the spring offensive came on 20 April, with both the Fifth and Eighth Armies in position to launch high-speed armored advances from the Apennines foothills toward the Po River crossings,” reads the Army’s historical account of the Po Valley campaign.

Word of Captain Serex’s death would not reach his hometown of Amherst, Massachusetts, until the afternoon of May 2, the same day that German forces surrendered in Italy and two days after Hitler had committed suicide.

One can only wonder if there was some solace in the news of the war’s end for Serex’s widowed mother, Bertha Serex, when she learned of her son’s death. She was sharing the family homestead at 327 Lincoln Ave. with her eldest son’s wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Taylor Serex, and the baby daughter he’d never know. The family patriarch, Paul Serex, a distinguished chemistry professor at the state college, had died in the spring of 1943 at the age of 52.

News of the captain’s death was reported in a story headlined, “Capt. John P. Serex Killed in Italy April 20,” on page 7 of the Springfield Republican of May 3, 1945. Next to it was reported the death in Germany on April 19 of Pvt. Norman Johnson, of Greenfield; the 18-year-old Johnson, the youngest of four siblings at war, was killed after only two months overseas. And, next to that was published news that Pvts. Ernest and Edwin Hartwell, of Greenfield, both prisoners of war, had been liberated in Germany, were in a repatriation center and would be headed home soon.

May 3, 1945, Springfield Republican

A clipping from the May 3, 1945 edition of the Springfield Republican. announcing that Capt. John P. Serex was killed in Italy during World War II. Third Party submitted

For John Serex, death came after nearly three years of combat duty with the 1st Armored Division’s 81st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squad. His unit had gone from the sands of the Tunisian desert in North Africa, to Sicily and then to the invasion of southern Italy at Anzio, onto the liberation of Rome and into the Apennine Mountains where he spent his final days.

He had been bound for military service since graduating from Williston Academy in 1936 and entering the Massachusetts State College that would one day become the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Serex completed cavalry instruction in the college’s Reserve Officer Training Corps and, after graduation in the spring of 1940, entered active duty that July. He headed to Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he remained until April 1942.

It was in Kentucky that he met and married his wife, who was from Lexington; articles in the Springfield Republican show the couple visited Amherst following their wedding in January 1942. That September, their daughter, Cynthia, was born; the lieutenant was overseas at a base in Ireland in preparation for the invasion of north Africa, according to newspaper articles that chronicled his service.

John P. Serex, of Amherst

Capt. John P. Serex was killed while serving in Italy during World War II. He is seen here in his Massachusetts State College yearbook photo from 1940. Third Party submitted

As Serex’s unit followed the path of war from Tunisia to Sicily and into mainland Italy over the course of the next two-and-half years, he earned a battlefield promotion to captain in early 1944. “As part of the 1st Armored Division, the 81st had more battlefield experience than any other American reconnaissance battalion or squadron,” according to historical documents archived at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

John P. Serex is buried in the Florence American Cemetery , Plot D, Row 14, Grave 4. It was there that I first came to know of him.

I visited the cemetery purely by chance with a group from Pioneer Valley Travel in Northampton on Nov. 12, 2022. It came near the end of a long day touring the city of Florence; our guide, having learned of our collective interest in World War II, arranged for a tour that included participation in the end-of-day, flag-lowering ceremony.

The Florence American Cemetery, maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission , is the final resting place for 4,392, whose graves are arrayed in symmetrical curved rows of a hillside on the 70-acre site. Another 1,409 missing in action are also memorialized at the cemetery.

Most died in the fighting that occurred after the capture of Rome in June 1944. Many, like Serex, were casualties of the heavy fighting in the Apennines in the weeks before the war’s end. Victory in Europe was observed on May 8, 1945.

I went in search of two gravesites that afternoon, one for any member of the famed Buffalo Soldiers so that I might share a photo with an acquaintance back home in Springfield who honors the legacy of the African-American troops that saw combat in World War II. I also wanted to find any soldier from Massachusetts so that I might pay homage to their service.

Grave of Capt. John P. Serex

Capt. John P. Serex, 26, of Amherst, is buried at the Florence American Cemetery in Italy. Third Party submitted

Back on the tour bus as the sun set, my journey to get to know Captain Serex began thanks to the internet. What I first learned that evening left me yearning to find out more: There is a memorial stone to him alongside his parents’ graves in Spring Grove Cemetery in Northampton; my relatives, including my World War II veteran father, are buried nearby in the same cemetery. What were the odds of such a “small world” connection?

I’ve spent time over the past 18 months in search of information about the captain, learning what I could with the help of Ancestry, The Republican’s archives, military databases and other resources.

When the American Battle Monuments Commission was established in 1923, its mission was to oversee the cemeteries and memorials around the world that honor the service of members of the U.S. armed forces. Promised its first director, Gen. John Pershing, “Time will not dim the story of their deeds.”

Today, there are 26 American military cemeteries and 31 memorials, monuments and markers overseen by the commission. They commemorate the service of Americans during World Wars I and II; they are located in 17 foreign countries, the U.S. commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the British dependency of Gibraltar. Four of the memorials are in the U.S.

The cemetery in Florence provided me my first firsthand glimpse of how we honor our World War II veterans in the lands where they fell; I hope one day to visit the cemetery at Normandy in France where those who fought alongside my father are buried and to chart his path across Europe with the 29th Division.

Until then and, on this Memorial Day, I pay tribute to the deeds of Capt. John P. Serex.

Vingegaard Hits Mallorca for Tour de France Prep with Countdown Ticking

The Dane gears up for a potential Tour de France return as rival Pogačar eyes a triple crown.

59th tirreno adriatico 2024 stage 5

The Danish rider was seen earlier this month returning to outdoor riding near his home in Denmark and has since been photographed at a café at the top of the Coll de Sóller climb on the Spanish island.

The owner of the café posted to Instagram , “It was great to see cycling royalty Jonas Vingegaard training on the Coll de Soller today and stopping to say hello to his fans! Wonderful to see him back on his bike and looking super fit!”

The coffee shop must make an excellent cappuccino because Vingegaard popped in again the next day and posed for yet another photo . “How privileged are we to have another visit from this charming man! Feeling honored!”

With the Grand Depart from Florance on June 29, there are now just 38 days until the Tour de France begins, and all eyes are on Vingegaard to see if he’ll be in top shape to race. Maybe especially so with his rival Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) currently dominating the Giro and heading to the Tour himself.

Seven-time Grand Tour winner Alberto Contador has already said that if Pogačar can take the win at the Giro and the Tour de France, he should target the Vuelta and go for the triple crown. Time will tell if such a feat is possible, and that might have everything to do with whether or not he has to battle Vingegaard in France.

CyclingNews reported that despite returning to the climbs of Mallorca, which marks another move in the right direction for the rider, Visma-Lease a Bike confirmed that no decision had been made on Vingegaard’s future program and that weather was key to the change of training location.
