Lufthansa Miles & More Program Overview

Lufthansa’s frequent flyer program is called Miles & More, and the airline miles that you earn are called Lufthansa miles.

The Miles & More program can be a great way to fly a Star Alliance airline partner like United Airlines .

You’ll earn 3 different kinds of miles in the Lufthansa Miles & More program.

The first type is called Award Miles . These miles are for award flights and are valid for 36 months .

For Frequent Travellers (lowest elite level), Senators (mid-tier elite level), HON Circle Members (highest elite tier), and JetFriends (under 18 years old), award miles remain valid as long as you maintain your elite status.

The second type is called Status Miles . These miles determine your Frequent Traveller and Senator status, and are counted in the calendar year in which they are credited. Every status mile is also counted as an award mile.

The third type is called HON Circle Miles . These miles count towards achieving HON Circle status, and they are counted over 2 successive years .

Lufthansa miles can be earned in many ways; here are the 2 most common:

Once you complete your application, you’ll have the ability to earn miles by flying with Lufthansa or its partner airlines, earn elite status, and redeem miles for award flights .

How to Sign in to Your Lufthansa Miles & More Account

Head to the Lufthansa login page and enter your membership number and password.

Hot Tip: Lufthansa requires you to have at least 7,000 miles in your account to search for an award flight. If you don’t have 7,000 miles, you’ll want to use the program’s mileage calculator to determine the number of miles required for your flight.

Points Expiration

Lufthansa miles expire at the end of the quarter 36 months after the miles were earned .

For example, miles earned in October 2019 will expire December 31, 2022.

Miles & More calculates the miles you earn on flights differently for each airline that is a part of the program, using different factors to determine the number of miles you earn.

For Lufthansa, the Miles & More program calculates the miles you earn by multiplying the fare by a factor of 6 .

As an example, if you take a $290 round-trip flight from Frankfurt to Munich on Lufthansa, you’ll earn 1,740 Lufthansa miles ($290 fare x 6).

How to Earn Lufthansa Miles

The Miles & More program offers 2 primary ways to earn airline miles:

While it’s challenging to earn Lufthansa miles, when you pair the options above together, you’ll at least have a couple of ways to earn Lufthansa miles .

Earning Miles Through Flying

The Lufthansa miles you earn are based on the distance flown and the factor, which depends on your frequent flyer status and the airline operating your flight.

For example, if you fly a $290 Brussels Airlines flight from Brussels (BRU) to Berlin (TXL), you’ll earn 1,450 miles ($290 * 5 factor).

The Miles & More program calculates miles earned based on the distance flown and booking class.

For European flights, the booking class is a flat rate. For intercontinental flights, mileage is calculated by multiplying the booking class by the distance flown.

Earning Bonus Miles in Other Ways

The Miles & More program offers a few ways to earn Lufthansa miles that don’t involve flying.

For example, the airline partners with hotels like Hyatt and car rental companies like National.

Branded and Partnered Credit Cards

Star Alliance Partner Awards

Since Lufthansa is in the Star Alliance, you can use Lufthansa Miles to fly on any other airline in the alliance as well.

The Lufthansa search engine requires 7,000 miles in your account to search for an award flight. Unless the miles are already in your account, we recommend using United or Aeroplan to find Star Alliance availability.

Oneworld Partner Awards

Lufthansa also partners with airlines outside of the Star Alliance like Cathay Pacific .

Booking Online

Whether you're flying to Germany or elsewhere in Europe (or even somewhere else in the world with a stopover in Europe) — and you want to go there for free, you should sign up for Lufthansa’s Miles & More loyalty program . There, you'll collect miles — and joining won't cost you anything aside from handing over your name and a few other personal details such as your email address.

And because Lufthansa is also part of the Star Alliance (which includes major airlines like United Airlines), you can earn and redeem miles through other Star Alliance members for Lufthansa flights or on those partner airlines too. Some elite status benefits carry over.

Flying Lufthansa

Once you join Miles & More, you’ll earn points every time you fly Lufthansa — just supply your member number when you book your flight.

So how many Lufthansa miles do you earn per flight? Figuring out the number of miles you’ll earn for your flight can be a little complicated. Depending on how you booked, you might earn miles based on the amount you paid for your ticket or how far you flew and in what class of service.

If you book a flight on Lufthansa through Lufthansa’s own website, it will tell you how many miles you’ll earn for every euro you pay for your ticket. Then, you’ll have to calculate the total number of miles yourself.

The easiest way to know how many miles you earn per Lufthansa flight is by using the animated calculator on Lufthansa’s website . Answer a few questions about your flight, and the Lufthansa mileage calculator tells you the method Lufthansa will use to pay you miles. Annoyingly for English speakers, the calculator is in German. But there are enough photos that should make the translation easy enough to figure out.

Flying partner airlines

You can also earn Lufthansa miles by flying any of its nearly 40 partner airlines, including all 26 Star Alliance members like United , ANA , Turkish Airlines , Air Canada , Singapore Airlines , Brussels Airlines and Egyptair.

To earn Lufthansa miles when flying a partner, provide your Lufthansa Miles & More member number when you're booking. Lufthansa calls your member number a “service number.” This ID can be accessed via your digital service card in the Miles & More App.

If you forget to enter your Miles & More membership number when you book your partner flight, you can also show your digital service card during check-in at the airport to get credited with Lufthansa miles.

Booking hotels and rental cars

Lufthansa's hotel partners include Hilton Honors , Best Western , IHG and Marriott .

To earn Lufthansa miles through hotel stays at those brands and dozes other, head to the Miles & More website . Select “Earn miles” then navigate to “Hotels.” There, you’ll see multiple ways to earn miles through lodging. After being redirected to a booking engine, log in with your Lufthansa service number and enter your dates and destination. You'll then see the cost of different hotel rooms and how many Lufthansa miles you’ll earn if you book.

Some offers apply to specific hotel groups, like a chance to earn 2 miles per dollar at Holiday Inns or 1,500 miles when staying at Best Westerns.

Rental cars work the same way. Just browse the Earn Miles section of the Miles & More website to see all the ways to earn miles by renting cars. Lufthansa rental car partners include Hertz and Europcar.

The fastest way to start building a stash of miles is with the Miles & More® World Elite Mastercard® , issued by Barclays. The card offers a tidy welcome bonus: Earn 50,000 miles if you spend $3,000 in purchases and pay the annual fee, both within the first 90 days. Notable ways Lufthansa miles can’t be earned

Unlike other airline frequent flyer programs, there are a few usually-standard ways to earn airline miles that don't apply to Lufthansa.

No other points or miles transfer to Lufthansa. A big drawback of the Lufthansa Miles & More program is that you can’t build up your points balance by converting points from other major programs into Lufthansa miles. This is a rare downside. Many other airlines partner with American Express , Chase or Citi — or with a hotel group like Marriott or Hilton — to let you convert their points into miles or vice versa. No such luck if you’re looking to convert points into Lufthansa miles.

You can’t buy Miles & More miles. With most airlines, if you have almost enough miles for a flight, you can just buy more. Not so with Lufthansa. So if you can’t fly enough, use a credit card enough or stay enough nights in hotels, you’re almost out of ways to get Lufthansa miles.

The number of Miles & More miles you need to book a flight depends on where you’re going and when.

Fly Lufthansa

If you’re flying Lufthansa, you can see in advance how many miles you’ll need by using its handy award calculator .

Select “Spend miles” then enter your trip details.

You’ll then see how many miles you’ll need for the flight in economy, business or first class, one way or round trip. Scroll down a little farther and you’ll see how many miles you need to upgrade to business or first class .

Fly a partner airline

It’s even easier to use your Lufthansa miles to fly a partner airline, as Lufthansa publishes a chart showing exactly how many miles you need to get where you’re going.

For example, if you’re in North America and want to fly to India on one of Lufthansa’s partners, just follow the chart to see you’ll need 100,000 miles for a round trip in economy, 192,000 miles for the same route in business class or 302,000 in first class.

Use Lufthansa miles to pay fees for some European award flights

Fees, taxes and surcharges on otherwise “free” award flights are famously frustrating and sometimes expensive. Usually, there’s no way around them, but if you’re flying a Lufthansa award flight within Europe and have an extra 15,000 miles, you can use them instead of cash to pay all fees and surcharges. Just add 15,000 miles to the award price of your ticket and you’ll pay $0 out of pocket for the flight.

Because fees and taxes can vary, so can the value of this points redemption option. But when the out-of-pocket costs for your flight are high, this could be a welcome benefit.

Other ways to redeem Lufthansa miles

Hotel stays: At the Hotels & Cars by Points website, you can search for hotels all over the world that you can book with Lufthansa miles.

Rental cars: Also at the Hotels & Cars by Points website, search for rental cars you can pay for with miles.

Gift cards: Trade miles for gift cards from three dozen big-name merchants including Target, Walmart, Starbucks and Gap, with some starting at 3,000 Miles & More miles.

Miles & More members can attain elite status at one of three levels, depending how much you fly the airline.

The three elite status tiers of Miles & More are:

Frequent Traveller: Accumulate 35,000 status miles or fly 30 segments in a year.

Lufthansa is generally considered one of the higher-end airlines out there.

The four Lufthansa cabins

When you fly Lufthansa, you have four types of cabin options, which are:

Lufthansa economy.

Lufthansa premium economy.

Lufthansa business class.

Lufthansa first class.

Even in economy class, passengers are served a 3-course meal. On long-haul flights, the wide seat cushions measure over 40 cm, headrests are adjustable and there are seat back screens with complimentary entertainment. And as you progress in fare type up to first class, the amenities increase.

Lufthansa first class passengers get valet parking service for rental or private cars at the Frankfurt and Munich airports, a personal assistant and — depending on your flight — first Class limousine service for routes boarding at Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Geneva or Vienna. Passengers in first class also get lounge access.

Lufthansa fare types

Within the service class you book comes different vary options. Within those cabin classes, fare types include iterations of "Classic," "Flex" and "Saver," which function pretty much as they sound. Saver fares can be cheaper but have more limitations than, say, Flex fares.

Generally speaking, the cheapest Lufthansa fare type is Economy Basic. While it allows you to rebook without a fee, you'll owe the fare difference if your new flight is more expensive. Refunds are not possible.

For more flexibility, opt for Economy Flex, which allows for refunds without a fee (as is common with many other airlines).

Green fares: If you want to pay a little more in an effort to help the environment, you can opt for a Green Fare. When you book one of these (more expensive) fares, Lufthansa promises that it will reduce 20% of flight-related CO emissions by the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and offset the remaining 80% of the CO emissions by an equivalent contribution to climate protection projects.

Green Fares are not booked as extras, but rather are independent and directly bookable fares alongside the other fare types. When you book Economy Green and Business Green fares, you get the same exact benefits of the Economy Classic or Business Saver fare, but with more flexible rebooking options and an extra 20% status and award miles on European routes.

Europe fares: Lufthansa also sells “Europe fares” for flights operated by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and SWISS within Europe. These fares offer three levels of economy-class fares (light, classic or flex) and are designed to allow customers to only pay for the services they want to use.

Places where Lufthansa flies

Lufthansa is the flag carrier of Germany, with corporate headquarters in Cologne. Lufthansa serves nearly 80 countries, and within them it serves more than 200 destinations (about two dozen of which are in the U.S.).

U.S. routes: Lufthansa flies into about two dozen U.S. airports that span the entire country. Beyond New York-JFK and Los Angeles (LAX), you can also fly Lufthansa from smaller cities like Tampa (TPA) and Charlotte (CLT).

The Lufthansa Group is simplifying its status programme. In the future, customers will be offered a more clear, more transparent earning system for achieving and retaining Frequent Traveller, Senator and HON Circle status. There will also be greater rewards for loyalty to the airlines of the Lufthansa Group. In the future, the most loyal passengers will be eligible for the new Frequent Traveller Lifetime status in addition to the existing Senator Lifetime status. All changes to the status programme apply to flights from 1 January 2024.

“With the status programme, we are focusing even more on our customers’ needs. Our priority is to create a simple and transparent programme, paired with special privileges throughout the travel chain. Key changes from 2024 at a glance:

Points system replaces status miles.

In the future, Miles & More members will be awarded Points instead of status miles for their flights. How many Points customers earn for each flight will depend on just two criteria: the travel class and whether the flight is continental or intercontinental 1 .

Frequent flyer status for loyal customers

Points can be earned on flights with all Star Alliance airlines, as is currently the case with status miles. To achieve Frequent Traveller or Senator status in future, it will also be necessary to take a number of those flights with Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Eurowings Discover, Lufthansa, SWISS or the co-issuing Miles & More airline partners 2 .

As before, HON Circle Members will continue to qualify exclusively on flights in Business and First Class operated by the airlines mentioned above.

Qualification and term

Overall, it will be easier to achieve status. In future, status will be valid for at least one year. The period for earning the necessary Points for any frequent flyer status will be one calendar year.

Frequent Traveller Lifetime and Senator Lifetime

Long-standing frequent flyers will qualify for Frequent Traveller Lifetime and Senator Lifetime status in future. This will be based on the sum of all Points earned on flights operated by Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Eurowings Discover, Lufthansa, SWISS or the co-issuing Miles & More airline partners 2 .

Miles & More award miles continue to be awarded as before. Award miles are miles that can be earned both on everyday purchases and when travelling - for flights, rental cars, hotel stays and much more. They can then be redeemed for merchandise awards or services.

Lufthansa postpones loyalty program changes until 2022 amid pandemic

UPDATE, Nov. 15: This article was originally published with errors due to a misinterpretation of the program's new requirements. It has been updated accordingly.

The Lufthansa Miles & More program has seen some notable changes over the last year, including increased award rates and the removal of hotel transfer options . Last year, we learned about an additional update coming down the road: how you'll earn elite status. The coronavirus pandemic delayed those changes, however.

On May 27, Lufthansa announced that it would postpone the changes to its frequent flyer program for a year. This means that the current regulations will continue to apply until Dec. 31, 2021, and that the new system (detailed below) will then begin on January 1, 2022.

There's a lot to unpack here, so let's dive in.

New elite qualification criteria

The first major change in the new program is a shift in the metric used to qualify for elite status each year. In the past, there were several different numbers that played a role in both elite qualification and additional perks, including status miles, HON Circle miles, select miles and Status Stars points. Under the new program, there will be just two (related) metrics:

Points : These will be earned on participating Miles & More carriers (including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian and Brussels Airlines) as well as all Star Alliance partners.
Qualifying points : These will be earned solely on participating Miles & More carriers (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, LOT Polish Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Adria Airways, Luxair and Air Dolomiti).

Starting in 2022, in order to earn elite status in the Miles & More program, you must reach both metrics, per the following chart:

In other words, you must earn at least half of the total points required for the given status level as qualifying points. If, for example, you earn 160 points solely on United-operated flights, you won't enjoy the perks of Frequent Traveller status. However, if you earn 80 points on United and 80 on Lufthansa, you would reach that tier.

These points will also be used to determine a member's eligibility for added perks once they've gone beyond the threshold for a given status level. For example, Senator members will get 2 eVouchers (valid for one-class upgrades) when they reach 700 qualifying points, and they'll earn 15,000 award miles at 1,000 qualifying points.

Finally, it's worth noting that all qualifying points on Miles & More airlines will now count toward HON Circle status — including economy and premium economy tickets. The current program only allows business- and first-class flights to count toward that top-tier level.

Earning points

Of course, these numbers mean nothing without considering how many points you'll actually earn on flights, and here, I think the updates deliver on the program's marketing behind them ("easy to understand allowing more transparency"). Under the current system, there are many factors that determine how many miles you'd earn toward status, including the airline, type of trip (domestic European, international European and other worldwide flights), and fare class purchased.

Put simply, it's complicated. Flights within Europe earn fixed rates, while other international flights earn status miles based on the distance flown using a multiplier for individual fare classes that could range from 0.25x to 3x.

Under the new system, it's notably simpler. You'll earn points based solely on two factors: the class of service you book and whether the flight is within a continent or between two continents. Here are the number of points you'd earn per segment:

What's especially interesting here is that there will no longer be any differentiation between lower-fare tickets and higher-fare tickets in a single class of service. Regardless of whether you book a Lufthansa flight in K class (the lowest economy bucket) or Y (the highest economy bucket), you'll earn the same number of points. The current system offers 3-5x more miles for Y than T.

In many ways, this new earning scheme bucks the trend of shifting toward more revenue-based qualification for elite status. An economy ticket is an economy ticket is an economy ticket — regardless of the price you've paid.

Status validity

Another notable change to the program is how long your status will last. If you reach elite status under the current version, you'd enjoy those perks for at least two calendar years. That's being consolidated into a single calendar year starting in 2022 — a move that matches how most U.S. airlines award status. Note that this single-year change also applies to qualifying for status. HON Circle currently gives you two years to qualify, but starting in 2022, that too will consolidate down to a single year.

Just note that all status earned up through Dec. 31, 2020 will still have a two-year period of validity. However, any status earned on the basis of points or qualifying points in the new system will only last a year.

Lifetime status

The final major shift in the Miles & More program is the creation of formal, lifetime elite status. In the current program, you'll earn Status Stars points as you earn and maintain elite status, essentially recognizing your long-term loyalty to the program. On Dec. 31, 2020, these will be converted to into qualifying points at a 2:1 ratio. You can then earn lifetime status by fulfilling the following criteria:

Frequent Traveller Lifetime: 7,500 qualifying points
Senator Lifetime: 10,000 qualifying points plus at least 10 full calendar years of Senator or HON Circle membership

However, the program is making sure that anyone who's already shown an extended loyalty to Miles & More is recognized. Members who have already earned four or five Status Stars will be awarded Senator Lifetime status at the start of 2022, while those who had earned three Status Stars will be awarded Frequent Traveller Lifetime status at that time.

What about the rest of the Miles & More program?

These changes are the only ones that will take effect in 2022. You'll still earn redeemable miles (which the program terms "award miles") in the exact same way you currently do, and there are no further adjustments to the program's award charts.

On the surface, these changes seem like a positive, as things will be simplified from the current version. However, whether you'll come out ahead or behind depends on your typical travel patterns. Travelers who frequently book other Star Alliance airlines that aren't a part of the Miles & More program will almost certainly find it harder to earn status, but surprisingly enough, those who typically book inexpensive fare classes on airlines like Lufthansa or Austrian Airlines may actually come out ahead.

Here's an example. Let's say that you regularly fly in the most discounted economy fare classes on Lufthansa-operated flights within Europe. Under the current program, you earn 125 status miles for each of these flights — whether they're domestic or short-haul international — so a round-trip itinerary would earn 250 status miles. You'd need to fly 140 of these round-trip flights to reach Frequent Traveller status and a whopping 400 to reach Senator status. In the new program, you'd earn 10 qualifying points per round-trip flight, putting Frequent Traveller and Senator status within reach after just 16 and 48 round-trips (respectively).

This also appears to extend to longer-haul travel. Let's say that you frequently fly from Frankfurt to Washington-Dulles in paid Lufthansa business class. You'd currently earn 4,081 status miles for each one-way flight in the most inexpensive business-class fare, meaning that you'd earn Frequent Traveller status after nine one-way flights or Senator status after 25 one-way flights. Under the new program, each one of these one-way flights would earn you 50 points and 50 qualifying points, so you'd need just five or ten one-way flights to reach these respective tiers of elite status.

Bottom line

The Miles & More program has typically had some complicated metrics for earning elite status and additional perks, so I must give them credit for the fact that this is being simplified. It's also great to learn of these changes more than a year ahead of time — as opposed to other carriers that have offered just a few months' notice .

However, whether or not these changes are positive depends on your typical travel patterns, so I encourage you to dive into the details on this page for additional information. As coronavirus restrictions relax in the coming months, you may find yourself looking for another program come 2022.

Welche Vorteile bringt der Miles & More Frequent Traveller Status NICHT?

Wie ihr den obigen Ausführungen entnehmen könnt, bestehen einige kritische Einschränkungen in den Frequent Traveller Status Vorteilen. Deshalb sei hier nochmal hervorgehoben:

Der Frequent Traveller Status berechtigt nicht generell zum Besuch von Star Alliance Lounges. Wie oben ausgeführt, ist man eingeschränkt auf die Business Lounges der direkten Lufthansa Partner-Airlines (Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Eurowings, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair und SWISS). Zugang zu den Senator Lounges hat man nicht. Und auch zum berühmten First Class Terminal in Frankfurt hat man natürlich keinen Zugang.
Wer Eurowings Flüge im BASIC Tarif bucht, hat keinen Anspruch auf Zugang zu den Business Lounges.
Als Frequent Traveller kann man eine Begleitperson nicht kostenlos in die Lounge mitnehmen. Eine Mitnahme ist nur gegen Gebühr möglich.
Zusätzliches Freigepäck gibt es nur für die aufgeführten Airlines und nicht auf Flügen mit allen anderen Star Alliance Airlines
Wer den Lufthansa/Austrian/SWISS Light Tarif bucht, erhält kein zusätzliches Freigepäck. Das gilt nicht nur für Frequent Traveller, sondern auch für Senatoren und HON Circle Member. Unabhängig vom Status fallen hier immer Gepäckgebühren an.
Kein Priority Boarding trotz Business Class Check-In.

Lufthansa Frequent Traveller Status erreichen

Wie bereits zu Beginn des Artikels erwähnt, ist Anfang 2024 eine große Umstrukturierung für die Statusvergabe bei Miles & More erfolgt. Mit Stichtag 01.01.2024 wurden Statusmeilen durch Statuspunkte ersetzt. Dementsprechend gibt es vollständig neue Qualifikationsanforderungen für einen Miles & More Frequent Traveller Status. Die zuvor bestehende Möglichkeit sich einen Frequent Traveller Status mit 30 Segmenten zu erfliegen entfällt. Die neuen Statusanforderungen sind simpel gehalten. Innerhalb eines Kalenderjahres müssen im Falle des Frequent Traveller Status 650 Points und 325 Qualifying Points gesammelt werden. Erstere gibt es für Flüge mit allen Miles & More Partnerairlines, letztere nur für Flüge mit Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Discover Airlines, Eurowings, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair und SWISS. Dies führt dazu, dass ein Miles & More Status beispielsweise nicht ausschließlich mit United Flügen erflogen werden kann.

Über die Höhe der Statuspunkte-Gutschrift entscheidet nur noch die Reiseklasse (Economy, Premium Economy, Business, First) und die Unterscheidung in kontinentale und interkontinentale Flüge. Keinen Einfluss haben dagegen der Ticketpreis und die Buchungsklasse. Auch die Airline hat keinen Einfluss auf die Höhe der Punkte-Gutschrift. Damit ergibt sich die folgende sehr übersichtliche Tabelle.

Ein Flug gilt als kontinental, wenn Start und Ziel auf dem gleichen Kontinent liegen. Eine entsprechende Zuordnungs-Tabelle findet ihr in unserem Artikel zu den Miles & More Regionen . Die Punktevergabe erfolgt je Flugsegment. Besteht ein Flug aus mehr als einem Flugsegment, erfolgt die Gutschrift für jedes Segment separat. Ein Lufthansa Business Class Flug von Hamburg über Frankfurt nach Los Angeles würde somit zum Beispiel 240 Points und 240 Qualifying Points (oneway) geben.

Denn Miles & More bietet allen Inhabern einer Miles & More Gold Kreditkarte oder Inhabern einer Kreditkarte mit Status die Möglichkeit bis zu 25.000 mit der Kreditkarte generierte Prämienmeilen in Statusmeilen umzuwandeln. Das Tauschverhältnis beträgt dabei 250 zu 1, d. h. maximal lassen sich auf diese Weise 100 Points + 100 Qualifying Points erhalten. Die Schlichtheit des neuen Miles & More Systems für die Statusvergabe führt dazu, dass dieses besser als je zuvor optimierbar ist. Im Kern ist es die Unterscheidung in kontinentale und interkontinentale Flüge, die dafür sorgt, dass schlussendlich nicht einmal die Flugentfernung eine Rolle bei der Höhe der Statuspunkte-Gutschrift spielen muss. Zwar ist ein interkontinentaler Flug in der Regel natürlich länger als ein kontinentaler Flug, doch Kontinente verfügen über Grenzen und enden irgendwo. Interkontinentale Flüge im Grenzgebiet der Miles & More Kontinente können also sehr kurz sein und trotzdem die hohe Punkte-Gutschrift für interkontinentale Flüge geben. Da interkontinentale Business Class Flüge 200 Statuspunkte geben, genügen bereits 4 Business Class Segmente, die bei geschickter Wahl sehr günstig sein können. Frequent Traveller Status – Gültigkeit, Requalifizierung und Verlängerung

Ein in 2024 erflogener Miles & More Frequent Traveller Status gilt nur noch für 1 Kalenderjahr und läuft dann immer Ende Februar des Folgejahres aus. Wer beispielsweise im September 2024 den FTL Status erfliegt, behält den Status bis Ende Februar 2026. Um den Status zu verlängern, muss man im Folgejahr (also 2025) die Bedingungen für den Erwerb des Frequent Traveller Status abermals erfüllen, um sich zu requalifizieren. Der Status verlängert sich dann um ein weiteres Jahre (bis Feb. 2027).

Frequent Traveller Status auf Lebenszeit

Im neuen Miles & More Statusprogramm gibt es die Möglichkeit einen Lifetime Frequent Traveller oder Lifetime Senator Status zu erwerben. Einen HON Circle auf Lebenszeit gibt es nicht.

Setzt man die Anforderungen zum Lifetime Status in Relation zum “normalen” Status fällt auf, dass ein FTL mit 650 QP ca. 46 mal erflogen werden muss bevor dieser zum Lifetime Status wird. Beim Senator Status genügen 20 Statuserwerbe zu je 2.000 QP. Man achte auf die Einschränkung auf qualifizierende Statuspunkte. Ein Lifetime Status kann also nur mit Airlines der Lufthansagruppe und ausgewählten Partnerairlines erflogen werden. Ein große Anzahl an Flügen mit Star Alliance Partnerairlines berechtigt nicht zum Lifetime Status.

Bereits gesammelte Statusmeilen aus den vergangenen Jahren finden im neuen System Anrechnung. Bis zum 31. Dezember 2023 gesammelte Status Stars Punkte werden in Qualifying Points für die Erreichung des Frequent Traveller und Senator auf Lebenszeit umgerechnet. Dabei entspricht ein Status Stars Punkt zwei Qualifying Points.

Exkurs: Status Stars und Status Star Punkte

Beachtet dabei die unterschiedliche Definition von Statuspunkten (neu ab 2024), Status Star Punkten (alt) und Status Stars (alt), die für Verwirrung sorgen können. Am besten ignoriert ihr gedanklich die Status Stars, welche Miles & More Teilnehmern nach dem Sammeln von jeweils 5.000 Status Star Punkten verliehen werden (5.000 Status Star Punkte = 1 Status Star, 10.000 Status Star Punkte = 2 Status Stars, usw.) und primär visuell den Sammel-Fortschritt verdeutlichen sollen. Im Details funktioniert das Ganze so: Bestehenden Miles & More Statusinhabern werden für jeden Tag mit einem Status 1 bis 3 Status Stars Punkte gutgeschrieben.

Frequent Traveller: 1 Status Star Punkt / Tag
Senator: 2 Status Star Punkte / Tag
HON: 3 Status Star Punkte / Tag

Diese Gutschrift gilt rückwirkend. Seid ihr beispielsweise bereits seit 5 Jahren Senator verfügt ihr über ca. 3.650 Status Stars Punkte (= 5 * 365 Tage * 2 Status Star Punkte / Tag). Diese Punkte wiederum werden im Verhältnis 1 zu 2 in die 2024 neu eingeführten Statuspunkte umgerechnet, was 7.300 Status Punkten entspricht. Der Lifetime Senator Status mit 40.000 erforderlichen Status Punkten ist damit noch weit entfernt.

Lohnt sich der Lufthansa Frequent Traveller Status?

Die Vorteile, die der Miles & More Frequent Traveller Status mit sich bringt, sind recht schmal. Diesen durch Umwege und/oder unter Mehrkosten “künstlich zu erfliegen” macht wohl wenig Sinn, auch wenn letztendlich jeder selbst entscheiden muss, wie viel ihm die Vorteile wert sind. Auch sollte man nicht vergessen, dass man viele der Vorteile auch auf anderem Weg erhalten kann. Wer z.B. Business oder First fliegt, braucht keinen Status, den Loungezugang etc. bekommt man durch das Ticket. Für Economy-Flieger wiederum gibt es Alternativen wie die American Express Platinum, die nicht nur zwei Priority Pässe für weltweiten Loungezugang für 2 Personen enthält (Wert 918 Euro), sondern auch Zugang zu zahlreichen Lufthansa Lounges gewährt. Hinzu kommen viele weitere Vorteile.

How do I reserve a seat?

You can book your seat either right away at the time of booking or later on. You can reserve a seat via My bookings up to 52 hours prior to departure. You can also select your seat at check-in.

Economy Class

Classic seat.

Decide for yourself where you want to sit. Whether it’s a window or an aisle seat, we offer you the option of reserving your seat in advance. The price of a Classic Seat depends on the length of your flight and destination, and is free of charge on some fares.

Fees per person and route

1 Price applies to scheduled flights with a booking made via lufthansa.com, austrian.com, swiss.com, brusselsairlines.com, airdolomiti.de, lh-group-agent.com and Direct Connect. The fee for advance seat reservations on the Economy Light fare depends on your frequent flyer status. Seat reservation is free of charge on some fares.

Preferred Zone Seat

As a rule, the preferred seating area is located in the front part of Economy Class, directly behind Business or Premium Economy Class. These seats enable you to leave the aircraft quickly after landing, making your travel even easier and more flexible. The price for a Preferred Zone Seat depends on the length of your flight and destination and is free of charge on some fares.

Legroom Seat

More personal space for maximum comfort in Economy Class. Take your seat in one of the ergonomic seats and enjoy a good 7 cm more space at your seat compared to the Classic Seat. Extra Legroom Seat

We offer you the option of reserving seats with more legroom on almost all aircraft types. Some of these seats are located in the emergency exit rows, so special conditions apply when booking these seats (see below). The price for an Extra Legroom Seat depends on the length of your flight and destination.

Premium Economy Class

Decide for yourself where you want to sit. Window or aisle seat, we offer you the option of reserving your seat in advance. The price of a Classic Seat depends on the length of your flight and destination, and is free of charge on some fares.

Business Class

The comfortable Classic Seat on short and medium-haul flights is located in the front rows of the cabin, and offers more legroom and additional working space. Business Suite

The Business Class Suite with higher dividing walls and completely closable doors offers you plenty of privacy and peace and quiet thanks to its exclusive position in the first row. A personal suite with lots of space, your own wardrobe, generous storage and a small minibar A flexible space divider can create a double suite from two adjoining single Business Suites. Extra Space Seat

The Extra Space Seat offers an exceptional amount of room. The generous single seat with enhanced space is the perfect place to work when travelling. Extra Long Bed

The Extra Long Bed offers plenty of space for those who wish to enjoy their flight to the full. The seat has an extra-long 2.2 metre bed for a relaxing night’s sleep. A flexible screen between the seats gives you greater privacy. Privacy Seat

A Privacy Seat offers a high degree of privacy right by the window. The distance from the aisle provides more comfort and peace and quiet, like a personal retreat above the clouds. The next generation of Classic Seat, comfortable, spacious and ergonomic, always has direct access to the aisle. All seats have an integrated flexible privacy screen with storage space and shelves for your drinks, clothes or latest reading matter. First Class

You experience maximum comfort on long-haul flights and the highest levels of privacy and convenience. In First Class, you can select your seat free of charge.

Whether you’re travelling alone or as a couple, the spacious private Suite Plus offers everything you could wish for. Look forward to plenty of room to work or relax, with two separately adjustable extra-wide seats that can be converted into a spacious single bed or a double. A private suite with higher dividing walls for maximum privacy. Simply close the door and enjoy the view above the clouds. The extra-wide seat converts into a spacious bed at night to ensure a relaxing night’s sleep. Further information and details about advance seat reservations

What are the conditions for reserving a seat.

The flight must be operated by Lufthansa Group airlines, Lufthansa Regional (Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa CityLine), Lufthansa Express Rail (DB), Edelweiss or Discover Airlines.
Your flight booking is confirmed (not waiting list bookings).
If you did not select your seat during the booking process, you can also do so after completing your booking and up to 30 hours before departure. Access your trip under My bookings, and book or change 1 your seat there.

Of course you can still select any of the available seats as soon as your flight check-in opens (generally up to 23 hours before departure). Depending on the fare, this is free of charge. Please note that in this case, the selection may be limited. If you are travelling on a European route on the Economy Light fare, you will be automatically allocated a seat at check-in. A change fee starting from EUR 29 2 will be charged if you would like to change this seat.

Please note that a confirmed advance seat reservation does not guarantee you a specific seat on board the aircraft (e.g. seat 3A). It only refers to the category selected (e.g. Classic Seat, Preferred Zone Seat, Extra Legroom Seat etc.). An advance seat reservation applies to a single leg of your flight.

Special conditions for seats by the emergency exits

Seats in the emergency exit rows can only be booked for passengers who meet the following requirements:

You are at least 16 years old.
You speak fluent German or English.
You are willing to offer help in the unlikely event of an emergency.
You are capable of reading and understanding instructions and carrying out the crew’s directions in an emergency.
You are capable of carrying out the tasks given to you without assistance from a travelling companion, parent or another family member.
You are not travelling with a person who would be dependent on your help in the event of an emergency.
You do not have a condition or position of responsibility that would prevent you from carrying out these tasks or would lead to physical injury in carrying them out.
You are not travelling with an animal in the aircraft cabin.
Lufthansa may allocate another seat to passengers who do not meet these preconditions to ensure safety on board.
Any carry-on baggage must be stowed in the overhead bins, as items must not be placed in the seating area or under the seats during take-off and landing.

Those accompanying HON Circle Members and Senators

HON Circle Members and Senators with up to three travelling companions can reserve seats in all booking classes free of charge on flights operated by the Lufthansa Group, Lufthansa Regional (Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa CityLine), Edelweiss or Discover Airlines (except on the Economy Light fare on short-haul flights).

Seating changes required for operational reasons

If we have to change the seat you reserved (e.g. for operational reasons), we will endeavour to reserve an equivalent new seat for you. Priority is given to passengers who are travelling together, e.g. families sitting next to one another. Then seats with more legroom, aisle, window and then middle seats will then be allocated in that order.

If we cannot allocate a seat in the same category (e.g. by the aisle, window or a seat with more legroom), you can arrange a refund of the fee paid via the Lufthansa Service Centre.

Ticket rebookings and refunds

You can rebook or cancel your flight ticket with an existing advance seat reservation easily and conveniently yourself via My bookings.

If you have paid for an advance seat reservation on the flight you wish to change, we will automatically try to book you an equivalent seat on the new flight. Please note that this is only possible if your flight route and airline remain the same. If this is not the case, you cannot obtain a refund for any advance seat reservations already paid for (even if no comparable seats are available on the new flight).

The fee for an advance seat reservation that has already been paid for can be reimbursed in the following cases:

If we change a flight itinerary or aircraft type, for example, and there is no equivalent seat available on the new flight.
If you have to book a new flight because of a flight disruption and your chosen seat is not available.

Please note that advance seat reservations cannot be refunded either at the airport or on board.

Fees paid for advance seat reservations cannot be refunded in the following cases:

You cancel your trip.
You have received an upgrade from us as a goodwill gesture or for operational reasons.
You change your seat, but your new seat is cheaper or free of charge.
You make changes to your booking and purchase a seat in a lower or equivalent category. You can obtain a credit to rebook to a more expensive seat category.
You do not meet the requirements given above for a seat in an emergency exit row.
You make changes to your trip, but there are no equivalent seats available on your new flight, advance seat reservations on your new flight are free of charge or this flight is not operated by Lufthansa, Lufthansa Regional, Austrian Airlines, SWISS or Brussels Airlines.
You make changes to your trip thereby altering your route.
